SECTION X NORTHERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
2019 FOOTBALL
A NOTE FROM THE ‘COORDINATOR’ Welcome to the 2019 Section X Football season. We are pleased to partner with Denton Publications to bring you this great league-wide Game Day program. As the upcoming season approaches, I think back to all of the great history that North Country football fans have experienced for over the past 100 years. This time of year brings out football fans of all ages. Last season, the Gouverneur Wildcats led the Northern Athletic Conference (NAC) with an undefeated league season for the third year in a row. Ogdensburg was able to take down the previously-unbeaten Wildcats to win their third Section X Class C Championship game in a row. The Blue Devils went on to defeat Section VII’s Saranac Central to win their third consecutive Section 7/10 Class C “North Country Super Bowl.” A week later, OFA knocked off previously undefeated and New York State Class C #1-ranked Cambridge-Salem (Section II) to become NYSPHSAA Class C Capital Regional Champion for the second time in the last three seasons. However, the Blue Devils’ season ended in a Final Four appearance, falling to Section I’s Dobbs Ferry in the NYSPHSAA Class C semifinal game in Middletown. The Canton Golden Bears defeated the Massena Red Raiders for the Section X Class A Championship. Canton did not go on to state-level play, as Section X had opted to not participate in the NYSPHSAA Class A championships for a three year period (2017-2019). That decision will be reevaluated after the 2019 season. In the Section X Class B championship, the Potsdam Sandstoners defeated the Malone Huskies 2-0 for the title. The Sandstoners fell to Beekmantown in the Section 7/10 Class B “North Country Super Bowl” the following week. Facing low numbers last season, Tupper Lake played an eight-man schedule with teams from Section III. By all accounts, this was a positive experience for their players. The 2019 Section X classifications are as follows: Class A – Canton, Massena and Watertown. Class B – Malone and Potsdam. Class C – Gouverneur, Ogdensburg and St. Lawrence Central. The schools will compete for the NAC regular-season championship, then break off into classes for NYSPHSAA playoff purposes. Tupper Lake will continue to play an eight-man schedule. Big changes within Section X football for 2019 includes the return of the Watertown Cyclones (for football only) on a two-year trial basis. Watertown was previously a member of Section X football from the late 1980s to 2000, before returning to Section III. The entire region is also excited for St. Lawrence Central opening a brand-new turf field this fall, including lights for night games. On a personal level, I will miss scouting games at SLC on beautiful Saturday afternoons and having a hotdog up on the hill. St. Lawrence Central will be an awesome place to watch a game. We still have Malone (great hill, great Glaziers). Throughout the 2019 football season, players from all over Section X will strive to create their own memories and have a lot of fun in the process. Some players will undoubtedly make their marks for future generations of North Country football fans to reflect upon. I hope you all enjoy the football, and appreciate the hard work and dedication these players have invested in their seasons. The coaches and players appreciate the outstanding support that they receive from their communities. I know I feel very lucky to live in northern New York. Please be a great fan and enthusiastically support your team, while respecting each opponent.

CANTON LOOKS TO KEEP MOMENTUM GOING The 2019 Canton Golden Bears look to keep the momentum going from a strong 2018 season. When asked about last season, Canton Head Coach Tom Cloce said,“Last year’s Golden Bears’ team was a very special group. They were freshmen when I started as Varsity Head Coach. They were with our coaching staff right up through our program, learning the game. It felt really satisfying to see that group grow into fine young men and good football players.” Canton’s crowning achievement last season was winning the Section X Class A Championship, the first title for the Golden Bears in sixteen years – a 48-34 win over the Massena Red Raiders. In preparing for the 2019 season, Coach Cloce will have lots of key positions up for grabs. Last year’s team will be hard to replace after graduating 23 seniors, including starting quarterback Declan Porter and a solid corps of veteran rushers and receivers in Bobby Beaudin, Pat Recker, Greg Mastro, Chauncey Douglas and Ian Rayburn. This year’s Golden Bears who will be battling to fi ll key positions include Ashton and Tanner Cloce, Hunter Blauvelt, Zack and Tyler Vanbrocklin, Adam Caulton, Conner House and Conner Ramsey. Said Coach Cloce, “Our team is very young and very inexperienced at some positions. However, these players are very, very eager to learn and get going.” “The Section will be very competitive this season,” said Close. “And I do believe many games will be decided in the final seconds. We spend the same amount of preparation for each opponent, now matter what their record, or ours. The keys to the Bears’ success this year will be to stay healthy, learn to play the game the right way and have some fun. Why else do you do it, right? And hopefully we will be very competitive and get some wins!”

ACHIEVEMENT UNMATCHED IN OVER A CENTURY
In 2018, the Gouverneur Wildcats completed their third consecutive undefeated regular season in the Northern Athletic Conference. The Cats were proud of their three-season success, an achievement that was unmatched in Gouverneur in over a century of football. Last season, the Gouverneur Wildcats recognized two All New York State Players – Logan Garrison (first team offensive line) and Peyton Schmitt (third team running back). Both players have since graduated, along with linebacker Jake Link, running back Garrison Gonyeau and offensive/defensive lineman Carter Hance. This season, the Gouverneur Wildcats will count on several veteran players for their leadership and big-play impact: Jake Shippee (LB), Brock Cox (OL/DL), Nick Embry (OL/DL), Mitch Tyler (RB/LB), Joseph Cummings (LB) and Cayden Stowell (RB). In assessing the 2019 season, Gouverneur Wildcats’ Head Coach Sean Devlin said, “Our numbers are down a little, simply because our school enrollment has decreased. We are returning First Team All North Quarterback Caleb Farr and a back field that saw quality playing time a year ago. We are returning seven starters on the defensive front, but we could be very inexperienced on the offensive line.” Coach Devlin is excited about the balanced competition in 2019. “I truly believe that there will be some great football games this season. Across the Section, I think there will be numerous teams that will be very-evenly matched, which will create exciting outcomes. As always, our key games are our Class C contests, which dictate playoff implications. In addition, Homecoming is always a key game for GHS; and this year, Watertown will be a key game for us because they are “new” to our Section and it is our Week 1 matchup. Keys to success in 2019: The Wildcats will rely heavily on both its defense with several returnees, and overall team speed. Staying healthy is always key to everybody’s success. The offensive line will be a work in progress and its development will be a determining factor in Gouverneur’s success or lack thereof, especially in the ground game. 8 | Section X | 2019 Football

Right now, what may seem like “overkill” will help ensure that your teen has the best chance to heal and rejoin the team safely. After all we all want what’s best for our kids both today and for a lifetime.
Sports should be an integral part of the life of every teen. It teaches teambuilding, sportsmanship and dedication. However, concussions are sometimes the unwanted result of sports participation. A concussion may also be referred to as a “head injury” or “mild traumatic brain injury”. A concussion is not a bruise to the brain; it’s an interruption of how the brain works. A concussion results when the athlete is strongly bumped or jolted causing the brain to move or twist inside the skull. Only 10% of concussions result in the athlete losing consciousness. Anyone can get a concussion, however, the fact that they are still growing makes it that much easier for children and teens to experience brain movement. In most cases, hits to the head do not result in a concussion. That is because the brain is protected by the skull; a very hard covering made of bone that works like a helmet. Hit hard enough, such as a high impact helmet to helmet hit, the brain can be shaken around inside the skull causing a concussion.
80
87
Concussions and other brain injuries are fairly common. About every 21 seconds, someone in the United States has a serious brain injury. One of the most common reasons teens get concussions is through a sports injury. Contact sports such as football, pose a higher risk of head injury, even with the use of protective headgear. According to the Institute of Medicine, high school football players are nearly twice as likely to get concussions as college counterparts or high school athletes playing other sports; as many as 20 percent of athletes who get a concussion have symptoms that linger more than two weeks. What can I as a parent do?...As parents we must be the advocate for our teen athletes. Too many times Published by Sun Community News & Printing
CONCUSSIONS If your child suffers a concussion; Your child should not do any activity in which your child might hit or jolt the head, until cleared by a qualified physician.
IF YOU THINK YOUR CHILD MIGHT HAVE A CONCUSSION IMMEDIATELY CONSULT A PHYSICIAN trained in spotting and treating concussions. Some good websites to visit that might help both of you understand the severity of the event. kidshealth.org/ teen/safety/first_aid/concussions, talks to teens about what to expect, or heads up parents.org has video interviews with teens describing their experience with concussion; click on the resources tab.
everyone is caught up in the excitement of the game and the athlete will try to “tough it out”. This can result in the athlete suffering what is called Second Impact Syndrome. This is when an athlete suffers a second concussion before the first one has had time to heal. To be a victim of Second Impact Syndrome the athlete doesn’t even have to be hit very hard. The brain is already vulnerable so even a sight hit to the head or even the chest can result in uncontrollable swelling of the brain, very often resulting in long term disability or even death. It’s important to recognize the signs of a concussion and help the teen understand that going back too soon could
have lifelong consequences. Healing time for a concussion should not be hurried. Along with sitting out a few games and practices probably the hardest part of a concussion for your teen will be, “No video games, no texting, no using the computer, and no watching TV,” says Tracey Covassin, PhD, an athletic trainer and concussion expert at Michigan State University. Even though games, texting, and watching TV seem simple, your teens’ brain has to work to keep track of what’s happening on the screen. These activities should be avoided for about 7-10 days, in most cases.
Of course, your doctor has the last word on exactly how much time you need. Depending on the severity of the concussion your teen may experience difficulty with school work and maintaining the busy schedule teens keep. It may be necessary to miss or curtail school for a few days; again your physician and your teen will help you make these decisions. As long as your child is having any symptoms caused by the concussion, it will be very important to prevent Second Concussion Syndrome (see below).

FRANKLIN ACADEMY SEEKS REDEMPTION IN 2019 A new season, a new coach and a chance at redemption for the Franklin Academy Huskies in 2019, after going 3-3 in league play, 4-3 overall, but falling to Potsdam in the Section X Class B championship last season. After dropping the first two games in 2018, Malone reeled off four straight wins. However, the Huskies suffered a frustrating and bitter defeat to Potsdam in a defensive struggle in the Section X Class B final. In the fourth quarter, the Huskies muffed snap near their own end line that was recovered by a Malone player, but with a knee down in their own end zone for a safety, the only score of a 2-0 championship game. The Huskies will be looking to fill the shoes of 13 seniors from last season, including starters Hunter Swan, Tim “Hunter” Langdon, Ian Maneely, Dylan Brooks, Brenden Boulia and Garrett Perry. Perhaps the biggest change for the Huskies this season will be the head coaching debut of Cory West, who served for many years as assistant to head coach Greg Marshall who retired at the end of the 2018 season. Of last year’s 18 players, there are just five returnees and only two starters. Said West, “We don’t have a big team this year, but they are hard working and are team-oriented. We have a lot young players and hope to grow throughout the season. We will have many players that will need to fill multiple positions.” West says the Huskies’ key games this season will be against Class B rival Potsdam, along with other big schools Massena and Ogdensburg. “The keys for this season will be to stay healthy, to keep working through highs and lows of the season, and staying together as a team.”

REGROUPED FOR A STRONG RESURGENCE The Massena Red Raiders are hoping to regroup in 2019, after a rebuilding season in 2018. Head Coach Nick Zappia said, “Last year was a learning experience for the Raiders. We were very young at most positions and struggled with a lack of experience.” While the Raiders were unable to bring home a win last season, there were some positives. The Raiders showed promise in three of their regular-season games, leading eventual Class C Champion Ogdensburg 14-7 in the second quarter, Class B champion Potsdam 14-12 at the half, and stymying Malone without points during a scoreless first half. Quarterback Zack Goolden’s 90-yard touchdown pass to Chris Paige, and a 71-yard sprint by Paige were two of the scoring highlights from last season. However, the young Massena squad was unable to sustain four quality quarters in each game and suffered serious second-half setbacks. Coach Zappia says that the 2019 Raiders will rally behind Dominic Monacelli at quarterback, while shifting Goolden to a running-back position on offense and linebacker at defense. Ian McDermott will be asked to help lead the offensive and defensive lines. Ethan Miller will fill slots at both fullback and linebacker. Zappia says he is still concerned about size and being shallow in some depth positions. However, one of the Raiders’ strengths will be the character of the team. “They are family oriented and care about each other. They are a ‘lunch pail group’ that grinds it out every day. Not a lot of depth and no superstars – just football players.” Zappia is also hoping for a strong resurgence that will make Massena competitive in a league where everyone is expected to be good this year. “This will be an exciting year as it will be a better balanced league,” he said. “We stress to our kids the next game is our key game.” The keys to success this year will be staying healthy and continuing to improve.

STAYING HYDRATED By Shawn Ryan
feedback@suncommunitynews.com
Across the North Country, the dreaded two-a-days, or in some case just plain old long and grueling single practices, have shaken our local athletes out of their summer induced ennui and started the process of whipping them back into playing shape. While coaches go over everything from cleats to practice drills to bus schedules, one thing that should be in the forefront of their minds is proper hydration for young athletes. Even with the dog-days of summer largely behind, the need to drink enough fluids during a workout is essential for not just the performance of the athlete, but for their health as well. According to the Mayo Clinic: “Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn’t have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. If you don’t replace lost fluids, you will get dehydrated.” While symptoms of dehydration can range from the simple to acute, high school athletes have actually died from severe dehydration during
Published by Sun Community News & Printing
grueling practices in recent years. The debate often arises as to what type of drinks hydrate the best; water or sports drinks. Theories abound. “For most outdoor activities, good old fashioned tap water does the trick,” says an article at Web MD. “If your activity lasts an hour or more, either fruit juice diluted with water or a sports drink will provide carbohydrates for energy plus minerals to replace lost electrolytes in your sweat.” Somewhere in this mix falls the newest kid on the hydration block: “Fitness waters,” which are lightly flavored waters which claim to be fortified with vitamins and minerals. According to Web MD, they fall somewhere in the middle between water and Gatorade or Powerade. But the general consensus seems to be, if the flavoring of the water gets the athlete to drink more, then fitness waters are a good thing. But how much is enough? Most experts agree that pre-hydrating with about two cups of fluid an hour before the workout is
essential. During the activity, four to six ounces for every 15 to 20 minutes of exercise will keep the muscles hydrated during the workout. Taking breaks during practice to drink is critical as well, rather than trying to make it all up after practice. Also, an athlete should not wait until they are thirsty before stopping for a drink. By then, dehydration has already begun, and re-hydration can take a while to take hold. On one point all the experts agree — energy drinks should not be part of the hydration mix. While athletes might think they are getting an energy boost after consuming an energy drink, the exact opposite is true. That’s because energy drinks containing large amounts of caffeine can cause dehydration, which can lead to fatigue, and increase body temperature and heart rate, which can compromise performance. Whether it’s water, sports drink or vitamin water, drinking an adequate amount is critical at this time of the year for young athletes, and it’s up to both coaches and athletes to keep the athlete safe.

OGDENSBURG LOOKING TO BUILD ON SUCCESS The Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils are looking to build from a very successful 2018 season, finishing 6-1, 10-2 overall. OFA finished last season as Section X Class C Champions; Section 7/10 Class C North Country Champions; Class C Capital Regional Champions; and NYSPHSAA Class C Semifinalist. In 2019, the Devils will return some of last season’s offensive firepower with RB Stephen Morley (Sr.), QB/ RB MeSean Johnson (Sr.), RB Tristan Lovely (So.), QB/SE Jackson Jones (Sr.), QB/SE Michael Reed (Sr.), RB Harry Powers (Sr.) and RB Owen Warchol (Sr.). Newcomers Eli Bullock (Jr.), Tristan Richardson (Jr.), Drew Costello (So.), Aaron Ellis (So.), Lee Sovie (Jr.), Kassidy Johnson (Sr.), Blake Wright-Ashley (Jr.), Kyle Ashley (Sr.) and Xavier Stewart (Jr.) are working diligently to make their mark on the offense as well. The backbone of the offense will be the returning O-Line contributors of Luc LaFlair (Sr.), Mark Barr (Sr.), Carson Barney (Sr.), Garrett Zulauf (Sr.), Austin Patterson (Sr.) and Austin Jones (Jr.). This group will be fortified by newcomers Derek Barr (So.), Corbin Durham (Jr.), Gage Austin (Sr.), Ethan Kiah (Jr.), Elliot Roberts (Jr.), Blake Hall (Jr.), Gavin Webster (So.), Devon Williams (Jr.) and Jacob Sharrow (Jr.). The OFA defense will be led by returning starters Luc LaFlair (DL), Stephen Morley (DB) and Austin Patterson (DL). Competing for playing time on the defensive line will be Carson Barney, Garrett Zulauf, Austin Jones, Gage Austin, Blake Hall, Ethan Kiah, Gavin Webster, Devon Williams, Jacob Sharrow and Corbin Durham. The linebacking corps includes Mark Barr, Tristan Lovely, Owen Warchol, Drew Costello, Tristan Richardson, Derek Barr, Lee Sovie, Aaron Ellis, Elliot Roberts, Kyle Ashley and Xavier Stewart. Alongside Stephen Morley the defensive backfield includes MeSean Johnson, Jackson Jones, Michael Reed, Harry Powers, Eli Bullock, Kassidy Johnson and Blake Wright-Ashley. Head Coach Matt Tessmer commented, “We are looking forward to the start of the season. We have a core group of guys who have been working hard in an effort to build upon the good things we achieved last year. There is also motivation to improve on some things that we can do better. We have many opportunities for players to establish positions for themselves in all areas. We like what we have seen so far. They are a great group of kids. I know the guys are super excited to put on the Blue-and-White and play some ball. It’s a great day to be a Blue Devil!” 24 | Section X | 2019 Football

EXPERIENCE TO BE ON POTSDAM’S SIDE The Potsdam Sandstoners will be featuring a senior-laden squad and one of the more experienced teams in Section X for the 2019 season. A dozen Sandstoners will anchor the lineup with most having two to three years’ experience in the blue-and-orange uniform. Potsdam fi nished the 2018 season at 3-4 overall, along with the Section X Class B title, led by seniors Braeden Bush, Hunter Sheeran and Garrett Mattimore. Potsdam veteran head coach Jim Kirka said, “Lots of the guys have come back this year, with solid hopes. We were in every game last year, but our mistakes in key spots cost us. Our returning guys have put it the time and done the work in the off-season to get ready for 2019. It will be crucial to learn from last year’s experiences and execute better decisions on the fly.” The Sandstoners have traditionally presented a smash-mouth, grind-it-out rushing offense, but this year might be a bit different. “Ideally, we would like to see more passing, mix up our offense. That would be a bonus,” said Kirka. “We’re going to try to add passing into the offense early and keep what works for us.” Whether the passing game becomes a mainstay in 2019 will depend on its success in the first few games of the season. Potsdam will be led this season by veteran quarterback Zach Kirka and running back Will Varney, both of whom will fill linebacker slots on defense as well. Steve McCargar, A.J. Sapp and Brandon Villnave will also fill leadership roles. “Every game will be important for us, hoping ‘success will breed success.’ We are expecting a very balanced league, so we will need to bring our ‘A game’ each week.”

ST. LAWRENCE READY FOR 2019 SEASON After struggling to score more than a single touchdown in most games last season, St. Lawrence Central is banking on last year as a learning experience to improve on its 1-7 regular-season and playoff record. Head Coach Bruce Truax says the 2019 Larries will be anchored offensively by linemen Cash Feeley and Ryen Cox, both of whom will return with plenty of experience to hold the line. Cash has been in the starting lineup since he was a freshman, along with fellow senior Dakota LeMaster. Feeley and linebacker Hunter Arquiett are both returning with plenty of skill and defensive leadership, along with returning senior Ethan LaRock. Leading the Larries at quarterback will be returning starter, senior Ansen Weeger, while sophomore Jayden Ashley is expected to get plenty of reps in learning and adjusting to the varsity offense. The St. Lawrence backfield will feature fullbacks senior Torran Robertson, Brady Benware and Robert Tyrell, along with junior Hunter Arquiett. This year’s halfback corps will consist of seniors Ethan LaRock and Ryan LaPage, along with freshman Xavier Shattuck. At the wideout slots, Zach Demers,, Steven Horner and Grant Taylor will provide senior leadership, and will be joined by junior John Guiney. Several first-year players will get plenty of chances to earn a position and contribute on either side of the ball: seniors Noah Adams and Adam Hutchins, along with juniors Will Silver, Dillon Bissonette and Robert Clark. Firsttime player Jarrett St. Hilaire will contribute to the Larries’ kicking game. Said Truax, “We are not sure yet what to expect with this team, because there are so many new and different players in important roles on both sides of the ball. But in the preseason, they were working very hard and progressing well.”

2019 JACKS ENTHUSIASTIC, AND EAGER TO LEARN Last year was a more successful season for the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks as they went 3-5 during their first season in the Section III eight-man division. Tupper Lake Head Coach Dennis Klossner said the team will miss last year’s starting quarterback Noah Cordes, with his experience and knowledge of the game. Also graduating, Brennen McComber was key on both sides of the ball, as a running back and linebacker. Brad McLear was last year’s leading receiver and field goal kicker, while Jaden LaValley was a big hard-nosed presence on both the offensive and defensive line. The Jacks will also be looking to replace center Chris Gilman and inside linebacker Ben Lanthier. The 2019 Lumberjacks will be a young team with only five seniors and only three with experience. The Jacks have two freshmen and eight sophomores. In preparing for the 2019 season, Klossner stated, “We will be grooming a new freshman quarterback to take over the signal calling and we expect a lot of growth and maturity as the season goes on. Kodee Hill will have a big impact for us, as both a receiver and defensive safety. Jay Gagnon will fill a hole in the defensive line and move to center on the offensive side. Rusher Skyler Pickering will carry the load in the backfield. Noah Varden will have several roles as a utility player on special teams, as a defensive linebacker and in the offensive backfield. Bryce Dattoma will also be a key player on defense and special teams. Klossner expects his team will be deep with linemen, but inexperienced. Tupper Lake could also be shallow at quarterback and linebacker positions. “This year’s team is enthusiastic, eager to learn and – as always with Tupper Lake football – blessed with a family atmosphere,” said Klossner. “ We expect to be successful this year, as long as we can stay healthy and continue to get better at each practice. Key games for us will be against South Lewis, Morrisville and West Canada Valley. A good start to the season would give us a boost in confidence to carry throughout the season.”

WATERTOWN WILL LOOK CONTROL TEMPO AS THEY MAKE JUMP TO SECTION X The Watertown Cyclones made the jump to Section X this season, allowing the Section to return to an eight-team league. Last season in Section III, the Cyclones finished 0-4 in league and 2-6 overall. Watertown is hoping that the transfer into Section X, currently on a two-year preliminary basis, will provide much more competitive match-ups each weekend. The Cyclones lost several strong players from last season’s team. Joel Robare, Manuel Garcia and Spencer Lavin graduated, while Nicholas Mallette and Kenny Forbes were lost for season due to injury. Returning at the helm of the Cyclones will be quarterback Kalub Conway who pitched eight touchdowns and rushed for another TD score last season. Jude Converse, who connected on five touchdowns (four receiving, one rushing) is expected to lead this year’s backfield corps.

Watertown Head Coach Kyle Lalonde is looking for several key players to have important roles. “We expect Kalub and Jude to build upon solid seasons last year. Jaiden Ramsey returns at running back after grinding out 227 yards and two touchdowns last season. We expect him to build off last season’s successes as well. Returning linemen James Irvine and Brennan Lynch will add strength up front. Deontae Hall is a newcomer who will be an impact player at both running back and wide receiver. Other firstyear players – wide receiver and free safety Dominic Gist, linebacker and wide receiver A.J. Carter and defensive back/wide receiver Donovan Milan – we expect will give us a boost as well.” Said Lalonde, “We are extremely excited to be back in Section X. It was a very competitive league last season and we expect it to be this year as well. The keys to our success will be playing our style of football and controlling the tempo of the game.”
