Lt. Gov. promotes rafting challenge to mayors By Andy Flynn

andy@denpubs.com ALBANY — The Associated Press reported Feb. 13 that New York Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy challenged mayors at the New York Conference of Mayors in Albany this week to take part in the governor's upcoming Whitewater Challenge, which has yet to be scheduled. There has been talk locally that the races will

take place on the upper Hudson River in July. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the establishment of the Whitewater Challenge during his State of the State address in January but offered no details. He spent a couple days rafting down the Hudson River in September 2012 with guides at the Beaver Brook Outfitters, based in Wevertown. Duffy said the goal of the whitewater derby is to give attention to the recreational resources in the Adirondack Park in order to boost economic development, according to the AP. Duffy ex-

plained that there will be co-ed six-member crews in rubber rafts and all members of the teams must work for those government entities. Cuomo had initially promoted the event as a challenge among politicians and government workers. The governor ’s office still has not returned phone calls regarding this event. The Hamilton County town of Indian Lake is where local outfitters embark on their whitewater rafting trips down the Indian and Hudson Rivers, taking out at the Warren County hamlet of North River in the town of Johnsburg.

At this time, there were many businesse s – Dutch Pantry, White Kitchen, Black Bear Restaurant and Bar, Travelers Diner, Smith’s Garage, Pottersville Garage (gas station), Montgom ery’s Dept. Store, Ga mbles Hdw., Glendale Restaurant and Bar, Towsley’s Hdw., Agard’s Grocery, a drive-in theater, two beauty salons, a barbershop, a sawmill lu mber yard, a combinat ion diner gas station, horse riding stable and of course Stone Bridge and Caves. The Town Clerk had an office at his home, the town garage was located across from the school, and there was a catholic church. The Corner Motel was built by my Dad and a crew of locals around 1964. There have been many changes throughout the years. When there was a fire, a phone call was made to the hotel and someone would activate the siren. In those days we had party lines. We’ve come a long way. There were many su mmer ca mps for children in the area - parent weekends were always extremely busy for the entire town. Many people took advantag e of the Trailways bus stop at the hotel and Greyhoun d bus stop at the Black Bear. Many of the ca mp counselors used this as their form of transportation.

JCS Nordic ski team wraps up season JOHNSBURG — The Johnsburg Nordic ski team wrapped up its 2012-2013 season team with the Section 2 championships on Wednesday, Feb. 13, according to coach Gary Wilson. The event was a classic ski race held at Lapland Lake ski area. “With temperatures hovering around the freezing point, waxing would be an adventure in experimentation,” Wilson said. The girls, Laura Richards (28th), Gillian Hayden (48th) and Charlie Riedinger (56th on ONE ski of her own) worked hard and left all of their gas out on the 7.5 km loop. The boys, skiing 10 km, kicked to a sixth place finish, being edged out of fifth by Mayfield. Ethan Cooper placed 10th to earn himself a spot on the New York State Championship Section 2 team. He will go on to ski in the State Championships at Bristol Mountain on Feb. 25-26. “Congratulations to Ethan on this fantastic accomplishment,” Wilson said. “The athletes are already looking forward to next season's competition.” Aidan Connelly(25th) and Terence Allard (26th) also had great races to help Johnsburg's score for the meet. And John Pierson (60th) skied his first sectional race with nothing left in the tank at the end.

Indian Lake woman fights kidney disease with snowshoe softball Event chair to lose last kidney, receive another

“She loves the outdoors and likes to travel, and she can’t do this strapped to a machine.”

ly not all about Liz. She was telling me this so I could have a sense of the hardship and cost incurred by people with kidney disease. What’s more, donations of a kidney cannot, of course, be solicited, and donations are preferred from living donors. This helps avoid the transplant rejection often caused by trauma to kidneys received from accident victims and the like. With a living donor, everything can be cleared and controlled. But the donor must contact a transplant center; the center cannot contact a donor. Having met Liz personally, there is no doubt in my mind that she’s a selfless woman who is about helping the foundation and helping others deal with the rigors and costs of this disease. She wants to help them face and fight the disease with dignity and grace. This is just as evident in observations from those who’ve known Liz a long time. “She has always impressed me with her

kindness and courage, but the way she manages this current ordeal with a smile and a laugh just amazes me,” said friend Jane Hinckley. “Whether it’s for the Girl Scouts or for AAU basketball, she is all about supporting our community.” Jane said this year ’s Snowshoe Softball Tournament really “hits home.” On Saturday, the tournament starts at 11 a.m. The registration fee is $10 per player or $100 per team (maximum of 10 players per team). The registration fee includes a barbecue lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs and chili. For non-participant attendees, lunch is a minimum donation of $1. Participants can either join an existing team or organize their own team. There are several registration options available: team information can be emailed to nakoma144@hotmail.com; on the event Facebook page at “B.A.D. beadonor”; contact Elizabeth Cannan by telephone at 6485863; or register on the day of the event between 10 and 11 a.m. Snowshoes can be made available. All are invited to stop by the Indian Lake Tavern Restaurant at 5 p.m., for the Tournament Trophy Award Ceremony and tricky tray auction of themed baskets’ gift certificates and merchandise donated by businesses, organizations and individuals throughout the community. To round out the fundraiser, DJ Krankin Ken will be playing at the restaurant beginning at 9 p.m.

Donor found As if to prove that facing hardship with grace has it rewards, last summer Liz was wearing a B.A.D. shirt while visiting a rela-

tive on Long Island. During the visit, Pete Cardino was inquisitive about what the shirt was all about. During this visit, Liz received a cell phone call informing her that her kidneys were failing. When Pete heard the news, he decided that if he was a match and passed all the physical exams, he would donate a kidney to Liz. He contacted the treatment center and set the wheels in motion. When contacted by phone, Pete explained why he was willing to help. “When I met Liz, I could tell by her way and her smile that she was a really good person,” he said. “She loves the outdoors and likes to travel, and she can’t do this strapped to a machine. She deserves a better life. She deserves to be free, and I know that she will take care of the kidney.” If all goes well and on schedule, Liz will have her transplant sometime this April. It will be a life-changing gift, but there are some things that won’t change. She will certainly keep on smiling. “It is not going to change my commitment to the foundation, to helping others with kidney disease and I am going to continue the annual event,” Liz said. Liz wishes to remind all of us that tax-deductible donations are always encouraged. She suggests making a check payable to the National Kidney Foundation Northeast New York (NKFNENY). Send checks to: 99 Troy Road, East Greenbush, NY 12061. Support of the Kidney Foundation provides vital funding for patient and family services, local research programs, and healthcare advocacy. And don’t forget to come out and watch or play on Saturday.

INDIAN LAKE — Over the years, Elizabeth “Liz” Cannan, B.A.D. (Be A Donor) Chairperson, has worked diligently to raise awareness and funds for the National Kidney Foundation within the town of Indian Lake. If you know Liz, chances are you know she’s been fighting a genetic form of kidney disease for most of her life called PKD or polycystic kidney disease. And, for most of her life, she has been doing it with a smile. A good example of this attitude and approach in the battle for those with the disease is when she stepped up to the plate, so to speak, and initiated the Annual “Be A Donor” Snowshoe Softball Tournament in the town of Indian Lake. That was four years ago. This Saturday, Feb. 23, the Fourth Annual Tournament will take place at the Benton Little League Ball Field. It hasn’t been an easy year for Liz, with one kidney removed two months ago and the other scheduled to be removed at the end of February. “After the softball tournament,” she said. That is what she explained to me when we met at a local restaurant to discuss the fundraiser. It was clear that this fundraiser means so much to her and others with the disease, that the removal of the second kidney was scheduled around the tournament. There she was, wearing a B.A.D. sweatshirt and a casual, easy smile while she explained that she has had to stop working because of her disease and undergo dialysis in Glens Falls twice a week. This will soon become three times a week once the other kidney is removed. Dialysis takes about three and a half hours per session, in addition to the round-trip to Glens Falls. But it’s clear that Liz is certain-

Valentine Hit Parade a triumphant end Get serious ... please! to ACOC building fund campaign L

R

omance was definitely in the air at the Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek on Feb. 9. The occasion? It was the Valentine Hit Parade II, which brought together a collection of fine musical artists both local and exotic (as far away as Rochester) for an evening of beautiful music followed by excellently prepared refreshments. The event was a benefit for the Adirondack Community Outreach Center (ACOC) and its Building Fund Campaign; it essentially marked the end of this long-term fund raising effort. Judy Brown, ACOC Chair, was pleased with the community’s support. “We are delighted with the generous support shown by local businesses and individuals during the Building Fund Campaign,” Brown said. “We still have projects to complete, but with the mortgage paid off, we are assured of a stable future for our most critical program, the food pantry and the family clothing center.” Performers for this special romantic hit parade event included Carolyn Bischoff, Beatriz de Mello, Marion Moore, Melissa Mulvey, Lis Bischoff-Ormsbee, John Ormsbee, Megan Ormsbee, Jeffrey Schanzer, Bernadette Speach, Emily Stanton, and Dan Studnicky. (The Ormsby family traveled from Rochester to North Creek for this performance.) Many thanks to all the local businesses, individuals, and ACOC board members who contributed time, energy, and food & beverages for the champagne reception following the performance. Thanks go to: Judy Monroe, Eric and Colleen Potter, the Upper Hudson Musical Arts organization, barVino, Barkeater Chocolate, Basal & Wick’s, Nancy Beaudin, Copperfield Inn, Café Sarah, Garnet Hill Lodge, Inn on Gore, Little Noni’s, Marsha’s and Megan Murtaugh. A special thanks goes to ACOC board member Carolyn Bischoff, who worked so hard to organize a great program. Andrea Hogan Guest Editorial Writer

ast week we witnessed the annual drawing of the battle lines during the State of the Union address presented by President Obama with rebuttals from senators Rubio and Paul. Our political system continues its dysfunctional method of running the country. It seems in unison with the national media, once known for being the watchdogs of political shortcomings. Instead, the national media continues to be ineffective in its role to police ill-mannered, self-serving political figures. Republican Sen. Rand Paul gave the Tea Party rebuttal 12 hours before the president delivered his speech. Paul’s speech was sarcastic and ended with a call for the president to be tried for treason and banished from the country. Comparing the president’s not-yet-given speech to one worthy of Iran President Ahmadinejad, Sen. Paul called the speech: “Full of empty promises and bald-faced lies we’ve come to expect from President Obama who tonight made a case for his own impeachment.” Sen. Paul’s prebuttal was preceeded earlier in the day when Speaker of the House Boehner made the comment; “I don’t think he (President Obama) has the guts to do it. He doesn’t have the courage to take on the liberal side of his own party — never has.” In fact, the speaker said, judging by the tone and tenor during the Inaugural Address: “I would expect tonight to be more partisan.” The president didn’t leave his critics without cause to cry and lament. He laid out plans for debt reduction, tax code overhaul, enhanced job creation, minimum wage, climate control, immigration reform, education improvements, defense and foreign trade. His bully-pulpit ended with examples of families affected by gun violence, as he challenged members of the Congress and Senate repeatedly with: “They deserve a vote.” The president called for cuts to spending on things like education, job training, Medicare and Social Security benefits to reduce the deficit. “Deficit reduction alone is not an economic plan,” Obama said. He also recycled a frequently used phrase from the

past, assuring the nation none of this would cost the country a “single dime.” Dan Alexander “Let's set Thoughts from party interBehind the Pressline ests aside and work to pass a budget that replaces reckless cuts with smart savings and wise investments in our future,” Obama said. The president knows that the divided Congress may not fall in line behind any of his priorities, specifically mentioning climate change, but said he'd move forward with or without their support. “If Congress won't act soon to protect future generations, I will,” Obama said. These and more comments were made to a sustained standing ovation from Democrats in the chamber while Republicans and Speaker Boehner sat silent. The president’s speech lasted long enough that by the time Sen. Rubio appeared for his rebuttal, I, like many others, had long fallen asleep. According to media reports the next morning, the only thing they wanted to cover was his groping awkwardly for a quick drink of water. Rubio made it clear that while the president doesn’t believe we can create a path for prosperity by cutting spending, he and the Republicans do not believe we can tax our way to economic growth. Thus gridlock is safely preserved for yet another term as our political reps do their best to pit citizen against citizen. Sadly, it seems nobody in Washington is prepared to get down to business and find the common ground that requires spending cuts and tax overhauls. Neither side seems ready to do more than grandstand and place blame on the other, while we see costs and debts on the rise and the economy struggle. It’s time we contact our representatives and say: “Get serious ... please! For all our sakes!” Dan Alexander is president and CEO of Denton Publications. He may be reached at dan@denpubs.com.

INDIAN LAKE — Indian Lake Central School District (ILSCD) officials say they were surprised by a recent notification of state aid reductions. The surprise was mainly due to the governor announcing in his executive budget presentation a 4.4 percent increase in aid to education. That translates into an average increase of more than $300 per student statewide. That’s not so for Indian Lake or Hamilton County. For ILCSD, the recent school aid run reflected a net loss of $98,577, a decline of 16.18 percent. The surprise was due to the reduction of $109,426 in high tax aid. In the district’s Feb. 12 meeting, Board President Jon Voorhees and Vice President David Harrington noted that for the past 10 years the district has been able to manage the budget by avoiding an increase in the school tax rate. However, the board was presented with the first draft of the 20132014 spending plan, and it reflected a 2.8 percent increase on the bottom line. Voorhees said this would place the tax levy back to where it was three years ago. According to Harrington, for an Indian Lake property assessed at $250,000, this would translate into about a $120 increase for the year. Many School Board members have said there may be a slim hope of getting this decline in aid partially or totally rescinded. It was with this belief that letters have been sent to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Sen. Hugh Farley and Assemblyman Marc Butler. In his letter to Farley, School Superintendent Mark Brand wrote, “When you combine the state aid reductions with the tax levy cap and virtually no mandate relief, we have had to eliminate 4.5 full-time positions at a time when the state education department and Legislature has imposed new requirements (Common Core Standards, APPR, etc.) for student achievement. Honestly, we have been very creative locally and met these challenges. As evidence of our achievement, we were recognized this year both at the state and national level as a ‘School to Watch’ for our middle school ac-

ademic program. All of our academic progress is now at risk.” Brand continued in his letter by saying that shifting more of the school costs from the state to the local level and expecting the community to absorb the increase is unrealistic. “The state must recognize the unique situation we are faced with as a 'frontier school' and provide assistance that will allow our students the educational opportunities they deserve,” Brand wrote. Board members also discussed getting the community involved with the effort to get the school aid cut rescinded. Therefore, they set a special board meeting on Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The purpose is to hold a budget workshop, and the community is invited to attend. In addition, board members agreed to act upon the decision made at the joint town/school board meeting on Feb. 6 and form teams composed of select members of each board that would call upon community organizations, explain the state aid cuts and effects, then call to action members of the community to reach out to the governor, senators and representatives to call for the school aid cut to be rescinded.

Other business •The board approved the adoption of the means tested senior tax exemption update recently approved by the Town Board. • It was announced that the school mural project headed by art teacher Lauren Arsenault received a grant of $1,600 from the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts. The grant covers about 50 percent of the projected cost of the project, and the school will be looking to the PTSO and the community to help with volunteers and donations to lessen the impact of the project on this year ’s budget. The work on the mural is scheduled to begin the week of June 3. •Board members approved Chip Farr as Varsity Girls Softball Coach for 2013. •Superintendent Brand informed the board that the construction project has only one door frame and a punch list of small items to be covered before being fully finalized. Currently, there is $5,300 left in the project’s budget.

By Christine Pouch, Pres., Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce (ILCC) is nonprofit membership organization serving Indian lake, Sabael, and Blue Mountain Lake. Its mission is to promote economic development through business and tourism while preserving and enhancing quality of life. ILCC will help its members achieve success by providing value-added programs and services; shaping public policy; and build partnerships and coalitions to effectively work with community, government, and educational organizations throughout Hamilton County. What does ILCC do? That is a very common question. ILCC envisions working with its members to (1) collaborate on issues and ideas that will help our individual businesses grow and the Town of Indian Lake flourish; (2) provide a support network of businesses that share common goals; and

What does the Indian Lake Commerce do? (3) pool resources to effectively bring visitors into our businesses for services, dining, leisure and shopping. In 2013, we expanded our vision to focus on job creation and economic development through the adoption of Adirondack Teleworks — a staff supported web based project to encourage teleworking in the Adirondack Park. As ILCC members your membership fee supports the greater Indian Lake community — it is an investment in the town of Indian Lake’s future success. Members benefit in many ways including exclusive business referrals, individual listings on a newly designed website, member-only brochure display, quarterly newsletter, educational classes and seminars, FAM (familiarization) TOURS, Facebook promotion, business-to-business networking opportunities, access to health insurance, and electricity discounts. In addition to being “the place” to stop for tourist information, ILCC sells hunting and fishing licenses, has free Wi-Fi, and provides copy and fax services. ILCC is the place for information — whether you are a tourist or a resident. ILCC focuses on bringing visitors to our area to so they spend money in our restaurants, stores, and motels and lodges. We partner with the Town of Indian Lake to support special town events such as the Winter Fest and Antiques Show. We partner with Hamilton County to promote Birding Festival and Inlet to promote the Black Fly Challenge. We

exclusively sponsor and host The Great Adirondack Moose Festival which attracts more than two thousand visitors to the area in late September. In the future, we hope to expand our partnerships, broaden our reach, and sponsor more tourism tourist destination related events. To help broaden our reach regionally, ILCC has memberships with the following organizations which, in turn, help promote ILCC’s members and activities: Adirondack Region Chamber of Commerce (Glens Falls), Central Adirondack Association (Inlet/Old Forge), Gore Mountain Chamber of Commerce (Johnsburgh), and North Country Chamber of Commerce (Plattsburgh). Our volunteer board members are the “eyes and ears on the street” seeking information and lobbying for a variety of government and corporate support throughout the Adirondack Park. All of these services and opportunities are delivered by people you probably know who live and work in our community. Local merchants scrambled to keep up with demand. Because of the popularity of the calendar, Committee Chair Nancy Beaudin notes that the lucrative fundraiser will be repeated again with a 2014 version. While the names of the models posing for the 2014 edition remain top secret at this time, most folks have enjoyed an eyeful of the twenty-seven models in the 2013 calendar. Cost of the current calendar, originally $15, has been moved to “make a donation.” Crucial to the success of the project was Beaudin’s committee comprised of

J’burg Town Board considers condemning NY gun control law By Mike Mender

newsenterprise@denpubs.com SODOM — The New York SAFE Act wasn’t on the Johnsburg Town Board agenda for the Feb. 19 regular board meeting, but it only took a question from a resident in the audience to move the issue to the forefront of the Board’s consciousness. During privilege of the floor near the end of the meeting, resident Bob Nessle asked Supervisor Ron Vanselow to explain his vote in favor of a recent Warren County Board of Supervisors resolution condemning the manner in which the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013, commonly known as the SAFE Act, was enacted and disapproving of the legislation itself. In adopting the law, Gov. Andrew Cuomo used a legislative shortcut called a “message of necessity” to allow legislators to vote on the law immediately, rather than providing time to allow legislators to consider the bill

and gather input from constituents. The state Senate approved the bill almost immediately after it was introduced and the state Assembly approved it the next day. Vanselow said he didn’t believe government should operate that way and therefore he couldn’t support the governor in the manner in which he chose to push the law through the legislature. The supervisor added that he agrees with some aspects of the bill but he disagrees with others. As an example, Vanselow said the clause in the law banning gun clips that hold more than seven rounds would mean that his wife’s 22-caliber rifle that she uses to “plink around with” is now classified as an assault rifle because its clip holds 10 rounds. “It’s not an assault rifle,” Vanselow said, adding that because of clauses like that, the bill is just a poorly crafted bill and he couldn’t support it. After Vanselow provided the reasoning for his vote, Councilman Peter Olesheski suggested that the Town Board consider

adopting a similar resolution condemning the governor ’s use of a message of necessity and condemning the content of the bill. Olesheski reasoned that a majority of Johnsburg residents would appreciate knowing that their Town Board opposed the SAFE Act and the manner in which it was passed. “Our opinion wasn’t even asked,” Olesheski said. But Councilwoman Kate Nightingale said she wouldn’t vote on a resolution that she hadn’t seen in writing first. That prompted Vanselow to postpone a vote on a resolution regarding the SAFE Act. “That’s for next meeting, “Vanselow said, promising to prepare a resolution that mirrors the resolution enacted by the county Board of Supervisors.

First freight shipment on Saratoga & North Creek Railway NORTH CREEK — Iowa Pacific Holdings (IPH) announced Feb. 20 that the first freight shipment in twenty five years has been transported outbound from North Creek, NY, over IPH subsidiary Saratoga & North Creek Railway (SNC). SNC operates between a connection with the Canadian Pacific Railway at Saratoga Springs and North Creek, a distance of 56.5 miles. The line was built as the Adirondack Railroad in the mid1800s, to open up the Adirondack Mountain region to both inbound and outbound passenger and freight railroad service. Passenger service was discontinued in 1956. The 29-mile Sanford Lake Branch, running from North Creek to Tahawus, was purchased by Iowa Pacific from National Lead in 2012. Over the years, the line handled large quantities of ore, processed minerals, and general merchandise freight. The last freight train over the upper portion of the line operated in November, 1989, and in 2003 the freight service for the International Paper plant in Corinth was discontinued. The north half of the line was purchased by Warren County in 1997, the line from Corinth to Saratoga Springs was purchased by the Town of Corinth in 2006. IPH acquired operating rights to the line in 2011, and has invested approximately $1.5 million in track, passenger station, and an-

cillary facility upgrades. Rail has been replaced, track sidings rehabilitated, new crossties and rock ballast installed. SNC operates scheduled passenger service over the line to North Creek, serving seven intermediate stations, using modern, stainless steel passenger car equipment, including classic full dining service and full length dome cars. During the winter season, scheduled weekend snow/ski and special event train service is provided. Barton International, producer of industrial minerals since 1878 is the first freight customer, having shipped their last load over the line in 1988. Charles Barton, COO commented, “We are very pleased with this first shipment and enthusiastic about future volume opportunities with Iowa Pacific.” Other potential freight commodities include iron ore, hardwood forest products (logs, pulp, wood chips, and inbound lumber products), aggregates (processed, clean sand and stone), inbound coal, and general merchandise. Iowa Pacific is a privately-held, Chicago based operator of nine US railroads, and manages two UK rail lines and other rail-related businesses.

burg. In the extension agreement, the cable company pledges to upgrade its digital equipment and bring cable broadband service to an area encompassing a 3-mile radius around the hamlet of North Creek. Vanselow asked the board if it was agreeable to extending the contract with those enhancements, but board members wanted Vanselow to seek additional concessions from the cable company. “It seems to me that there should be something whereby they agree to serve a few more customers each year,” Councilman Eugene Arsenault said. Resident Nessle agreed, saying that if the cable corporation is given a monopoly for cable service in the town then in exchange for that, the cable corporation ought to have to expand service in the town incrementally “from time to time.” Resident Dave Bulmer asked if there’s anything in the contract that establishes rates and specifies the manner by which the cable company can raise those rates. Arsenault read a clause from the contract that states that any rate increases must be approved by the town and by the Federal Communications Commission. “Then at minimum, the current rates ought to be spelled out in the contract,” Bulmer said. “I have quite a list,” Vanselow said. He pledged to go back to the cable company and get answers that he will report back to the board at its next meeting. Read more about this meeting online at www.newsenterpise.org.

NORTH CREEK — Our Town Theatre Group will sponsor Pendragon Theatre’s production of “Terra Nova,” a riveting play about the race to the South Pole from 1910 to 1912 on Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Tannery Pond Community Center. In the winter of 1911-1912, five Englishmen and five Norwegians raced each other to the bottom of the earth. Only the five Norwegians returned. This is the story of the Englishmen. In honor of the expedition’s centennial, Pendragon is staging Ted Tally’s compelling look at heroism under adverse and deadly conditions. Mr. Tally (who also wrote The Silence of the Lambs) took the play from journals and letters found on the frozen body of British expedition leader Robert Scott. His team refused the use of sled dogs, so were forced to drag their gear across a frozen wasteland, only to find that the Norwegian team arrived before them. For tickets, call 406-8840 or email your ticket order to OTTGTickets@gmail.com. The cost is Adults $15; Students $8. The event is sponsored by Natural Stone Bridge & Caves Park. Pendragon receives funding from the New York State Council on the Arts.
