APA allows extra public hearing By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com RAY BROOK — Adirondack Park Agency officials have agreed to grant one final public hearing concerning the reclassification of 12,500 acres of recently acquired land surrounding Lows Lake – including the lakebed itself. Early this week, Harrietstown officials requested the ad-
ditional hearing. Harrietstown Supervisor Larry Miller told WNBZ that local sportsman and outdoors clubs had contacted him, stating the three previous public hearings were either too far from the local area or held at a time when many couldn’t attend. “They felt it was too far for individuals in the Tri-Lakes area to go to and they felt there would be the possibility of a great number of individuals who would want to partici-
pate,” he said. The previous public hearings were held earlier this month in Long Lake, Wanakena and Albany. Miller offered the Harrietstown Hall as a potential site for the additional hearing, but APA legal counsel John Banta said it will instead be held at the agency headquarters in Ray Brook. The hearing is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 10 at 6:30

Lindsay Yandon
New editor hired to lead News Enterprise By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — This coming week, there will be a new face at the North Creek News-Enterprise. Lindsay M. Yandon, 22, has been hired as the editor for the News Enterprise, a Denton Publications weekly that is the leading source of news for its circulation area. Denton Publications’ Managing Editor John Gereau said Yandon was chosen from a pool of talented candidates, and said she will undoubtedly steer vital community news into the pages of the News Enterprise. “Lindsay is a native of our region with a unique insight into the people and communities here and a talented young journalist,” Gereau said. “We are lucky to have her as the new editor of the News Enterprise." Yandon replaces Jonathan Alexander, who moved on several weeks ago to become assistant news director of WNBZ radio and Mountain Communications in Saranac Lake. A native of Newcomb, Yandon graduated valedictorian of her class at Newcomb Central. Yandon continued her studies at Houghton College, where she served as Editor-In-Chief of the college newspaper after serving as a reporter and editorial assistant for two years. She graduated with honors in 2008 with a degree in journalism, and then interned at the Hollywood Reporter film magazine’s New York City bureau. Also, she held a parttime job at the Carol Mann Agency, a boutique publishing enterprise in Manhattan. Additionally, she wrote several community news articles last summer for the North Creek News Enterprise. Late last year, Yandon joined the media relations staff of Houghton’s administration, where she worked for about nine months, writing news releases, helping develop marketing campaigns, and editing the school’s alumni magazine. Several months ago, she took a position at the Shoreline Restaurant in Lake George while seeking employment in journalism.

NORTH CREEK — The Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Creek has become a bit more colorful lately, thanks to the recent addition of a memory garden. Memory gardens, gardens designed to memorialize residents of assisted living facilities, are popular in such facilities around the country, and the TriCounty nursing home put its resources together and reached out to the community so it too could enjoy the numerous benefits of these beautiful and functional gardens. According to David Lovelace, administrator of Tri-County, the nursing home has been looking for creative new ways to expand and continue to foster success as an assisted living facility in the Adirondack area. “Facilities of this kind offer similar care, so what is our differentiating factor?” Lovelace posed. “Why not create a space that lets people experience the tranquility that a garden can offer? Having a memory garden gives us a competitive advantage.” The garden currently includes a

Free square dance at TPCC NORTH CREEK — This year, summer will be celebrated with the lilting strains of old time square dance music. The public is encouraged to attend a free community dance on Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Tannery Pond Community Center. Dance with Dan Duggan calling Square, Circle, Reels and Contra Dances. No experience is needed. The dance will be preceded by an artists’ reception for the Widlund’s exhibit “Photograph: In and Out of Focus,” from 5-7 p.m. in the Widlund Gallery of TPCC. This community dance will be called by Dan Duggan who plays the hammered dulcimer, assisted by caller Paul Rosenberg, accompanied by Peggy Lynn on concertina and guitar and Frank Orsini on the fiddle. Duggan is acknowledged as one of the finest dulcimer players and composers in the country. His renditions of traditional Irish and American tunes reflect his study and understanding of their original context. Now meet another side of Duggan — the patient, fun and enthusiastic country dance instructor. Come learn and laugh! Lynn is a singer, songwriter and arts educator who brings an infectious enthusiasm to all her endeavors. With a sultry, yet powerful alto voice, she gives a clear message of the passion underlying her songs. Lynn’s singing ranges from folksy to blues with equal ease, alone or harmonizing with others. Orsini is a prominent acoustic musician of upstate New York. He plays violin, viola and mandolin, and the Celtic harp. A versatile fiddler, singer and seasoned ensemble player, he has been on numerous recordings and been a member of many established groups with a strong follow-

ing. Rosenberg has been leading dances throughout the northeastern United States since 1986. He is known for his gentle but energetic, encouraging style, concise teaching, and offbeat sense of humor. He plays recorder and fiddle but gets his greatest satisfaction from enabling people who have never danced — especially the dance phobic — to not only get up and dance, but also to have a great time doing it and come back for more! His enthusiasm for dance and empathy with novices comes from his avoidance-at-all-costs and terror of dancing — until he discovered contra dancing at age 30. Tannery Pond Community Center is at 228 Main Street, North Creek.

Now a Lake George resident, she expects to return to northern Warren County and delve into community life closer to home, she said this week. “As I grew up in Newcomb, I care about the people and the local issues,” she said. “Every writer ’s goal is writing about something they care about — something they’re invested in,” she said. Yandon’s interests include Political Science and horse riding, training and instruction, in which she has been involved for a decade. This summer, she has assisted at River Run Stables of Corinth as an assistant instructor. At Houghton, she served as president of the college’s Equestrian Society. She also has an interest in social justice. While at Houghton, she served as a cabinet member of Allegany County Outreach, helping coordinate a program in which college students serve as as mentors to underprivileged youth. Also, she studied abroad in Santa Cruz and Tambo, Bolivia, where she developed a riding camp program. She said her varied experience will be helpful as she reports the news. “I look forward to meeting new people and renewing friendships in area,” she said. Gereau welcomed Lindsay to the Denton staff Monday. “I am confident she will play a crucial role in building the product while helping deliver the community news of importance to our readership,” he said. Lindsay can now be reached at lindsay@denpubs.com.

Ed Lowman will once again grace the stage with his fiddle tunes, folk songs and fancy footwork. Sara Milonovich, also known as Sara Miles, will play her violin. John Kirk and Trish Miller will perform together, bringing their multi-instrumental talents to the stage. Kirk is known for his lyric voice and versatile instrumental skills. On fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo and tin whistle, Kirk demonstrates a vast knowledge of musical traditions. Miller has been teaching and performing Appalachian clogging since 1980. She plays guitar, banjo and a little ukulele. The Jamcrackers will also perform. The band features the voice and soulful ballads of Peggy Lynn, the baritone and original songs of Dan Berggren and national champion hammered dulcimer player Dan Duggan. The Jamcrackers have old-fashioned sounding folk songs that celebrate the people and culture of the Adirondacks. The mission of the Schroon Lake Arts Council is to cultivate, promote, foster, sponsor and develop the understanding, taste and love of the musical and visual arts in our community. NORTH CREEK — The North Creek Depot Museum is hosting its annual fundraiser on Aug. 14 and invites residents to dust off those boots and join in a country dinner and hoedown. The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with a country dinner buffet, followed by music and square dancing by local band “Don’t Quit your Day Job” at 7 p.m. The band is generously underwritten by Creative Stage Lighting Co, Inc. “This is a family friendly event,” said Helen Miner, board president. “We hope that folks of all ages will join us for this fun night.” Proceeds will go to support the museum’s development
of an education center at its Owen’s House building. “The development of an education center is integral to providing year-round activities for the region’s schools,” said Michelle San Antonio, museum director. This fun-raiser will be held at the Hudson River Pavilion by the train station. Tickets are $20 adult, $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets purchased before Aug. 7 are discounted. Please call the museum at 251-5842 to reserve tickets, or purchase them at several businesses along Main Street in North Creek.

plane access citing the high percentage of revenue the floatplane operators generate from trips to Lows Lake. Local government officials are now troubled by the assertion that a lake bottom could potentially be classified as “wilderness,” a move they say is precedent-setting. Franklin County Legislator Paul Maroun sent a letter to APA Chairman Curt Stiles earlier this week expressing as much. “It’s not a common practice; it is a precedent-setting issue actually. What I am concerned about is two things: One, this has very serious implications for Lake Placid, Cranberry Lake and even the Raquette River. We may have to extract docks that are in there already,” he said. “If they (the APA) claim riparian rights, that means what’s under the water would belong to the State of New York now.” Maroun said the state has enough problems paying the taxes on the land it already owns. Adding lakebeds would only increase the tax-burden on the state, he said. But for environmentalists, these measures are an appropriate and necessary step in assuring the wild character of the Bog River Flow.
From page 1 with terrific refreshments, there will be a “Chinese auction,” composed of items donated by area businesses (with tickets sold for bidding on the items.) The preview party fun continues until 10 p.m. The books will be available again at Tannery Pond on Saturday Aug. 1 starting at 9 a.m. along with a fine bake sale. No admission will be charged on Saturday for either the book or bake sale; the auction will continue from the evening before. The book sale closes at 3 p.m. Saturday, so come early to get the books you’re looking for. The last hour of the sale will feature the ever-popular “buck a bag” sale. Don’t forget this most excellent annual event!
APA From page 1 p.m., Banta said. The APA has proposed a plan that would reclassify most of the land as wilderness. The access road and the two 100year old dams that are responsible for the lake’s existence would be classified as primitive, according to the APA plan. A consistently contentious issue, if adopted Lows Lake and the surrounding land would be added to the Five Ponds Wilderness Area. The matter turned especially divisive when, after an Adirondack Mountain Club lawsuit, the agency adopted a measure that will forever ban floatplane access to Lows Lake as of December 31, 2011. The lake is a favorite site of canoeists and bass fisherman alike, but some canoeists had complained that the planes were disrupting their wilderness experience. The mountain club then successfully argued that continued floatplane access was contrary to the State Land Master Plan. Before the total ban, the Department of Environmental Conservation had proposed a 10-year extension to float-
Supper, book discussion slated INDIAN LAKE — A potluck supper and discussion of the book, “Revolutionary Road” by Richard Yates will be held Thursday, Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. at Byron Park in Indian Lake. The movie will be playing at the Lake Theater at 7:30 p.m. Stick around after the movie for a reception and discussion comparing the book and the movie. Call the Indian Lake Library to sign up for the supper. This event is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Regrant Program. In Hamilton County the Decentralization Program is administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts located in Blue Mountain Lake.

Gibson Brothers to perform at Indian Lake Theater
The board of trustees of the Indian Lake Theater celebrated their first year as a not-for-profit community screen and stage July 12. The day included fun, food, live music by “Don’t Quit Your Day Job” and lots of birthday cake. Pictured at left, top Indian Lake town board member Vonnie Liddle visits with party guests while theater volunteer Robin Jay helps with balloons. Pictured at left, bottom: Indian Lake Theater Board of Directors gets ready to cut birthday cake. INDIAN LAKE — Internationally acclaimed bluegrass band, The Gibson Brothers, will perform at the historic Indian Lake Theater on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 pm. The concert celebrates the 10th Anniversary of North Country Public Radio’s Adirondack News Bureau and will be broadcast live throughout the NCPR listening area. A live stream of the concert will also be available at ncpr.org. Barb Heller, host of NCPR’s much-loved music program, String Fever, will emcee the event. Adirondack Bureau Chief, Brian Mann, Station Manager Ellen Rocco, and other station staff will attend. “We can’t think of a better way to celebrate 10 years of onthe-ground service to the communities of the Adirondacks than hosting a concert in a beautifully restored landmark theater featuring the extraordinary Gibson Brothers—topshelf, home-grown talent,” said Station Manager Ellen Rocco. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and include a wine and cheese reception following the event. For reservations call 1-877-388-6277 or email kelly@ncpr.org.

Garden
From page 1 mixture of annual and perennial plants, featuring numerous planters, trellises harboring clematis vines and honeysuckles, crabapple trees, a gazebo, bird feeders, several benches, and paved walkways that wind through and around the botanical bounty. The garden will be expanded in rustic Adirondack camp tradition, as part of the style consistent with Front Street’s ski bowl development. Not only is the garden a joy to behold, it also serves as a place to carry out occupational therapy for residents. “Feet markers will be painted on the walk ways so that residents can use the garden in conjuncture with therapies,” said Lovelace. “In spring, we had residents plant seedlings, which was part of their weekly activities.” He noted that many of the Tri-County residents are from the Adirondack region, and have spent much time throughout their life enjoying the outdoors. Many of them would rather do therapy out in the fresh air of a garden than inside. The garden is easily accessible by wheelchair, and TriCounty will soon be installing a screened-in porch off the garden where residents can relax and enjoy the sounds and sights of nature. Lovelace said that Tri-County employees plan to incorporate vegetable gardens next year. Residents and employees will be encouraged to enjoy the fresh vegetables and to cut flowers for arrangements. The memory garden has been largely funded by donations from the community. Key players in bringing the garden to life were Chris Sears, a local Eagle Scout candidate, and Mandy Savarie, a community volunteer who graciously did all of the planning. Sears needed a project that would help him qualify for Eagle Scouts, and lucky for Tri-County, chose to help develop the memory garden. Sears solicited donations from the community, which funded the amassment of around 350 different plants. He, along with 13 volunteers, came on July 12 of and completed the initial planting of the garden in just one day. Tri-county also called on Richard Vega, proprietor of Adirondack Rustic Designs, to bring the project together at whole-sale costs. Vega arranged a group of Amish workers to assemble and install the gazebo that is the centerpiece of the garden, another feat accomplished in a single day. The Garden Club, headed by Jamie Reynolds, has been an enormous help as well, and community members who would like to get involved are encouraged to join. While maintenance workers on staff have stepped up to the challenge of caring for the garden at present, a landscaper will be hired next year to ensure the garden is kept its best. “The garden will be an ongoing project” commented Lovelace. “Our September newsletter will show off our accomplishments so far, and discuss our remaining unmet needs.” Lovelace said he was proud to note that someone was already sponsoring the gazebo, as well as a bench.
Those who wish to contribute in the name of loved ones can donate and have a bronze memory plaque in the garden. So far, the newly developed memory garden has given all those involved with Tri-County something to be excited about. It was available for use this past weekend, and several residents were able to go out and enjoy it. “My intent is that it becomes used all week for therapy and for families to spend time together. We are even going to have a grill out there.” said Lovelace. “On Aug. 9, we are having a family picnic as an introduction to this garden. In time, we could open it up to more people; we may even hold
services here such as weddings. Part of being a not-for profit organization is being available to the community for enjoyment.” While many rural nursing and rehabilitation centers are losing money annually, tri-county enjoyed substantial gains last year, a trend Lovelace hopes to see continue with the help of features like the memory garden that will serve to attract residents. Tri-county residents are already noticing the change; resident Edna Kenyon has a view of the garden from her room. “It’s nice to look out the window and see it, it’s very beautiful and the flowers are so lovely, and every now and then you see some little birds,” she remarked, “I like

the gazebo; gazebos are something I’ve always liked. I watched the Amish men work on it, and it was very interesting.” Dorothy Bradley is another lucky resident with a room looking out at the garden.
“I like it because we are going to get to go out there, and it looks so nice with all the flowers.” she said. “Especially when my daughter comes, she’ll take me out there.” The memory garden is still in its infancy, and will
