Lady Sentinels look to build with eight new players on roster By Keith Lobdell

keith@suncommunitynews.com

TICONDEROGA — The Lady Sentinel varsity soccer program will look to build off a Class C semifinal appearance while bringing in a new crop of athletes. The squad finished with an 8-6-1 record, defeating Seton Catholic in their opening round of the Class C playoffs before falling to eventual champion Northern Adirondack. “This year’s team hopes to build on last year’s record,” head coach Kathy Tubbs said. “With the loss of nine players to graduations, all positions have been hit. Nine players are returning and eight will be moving up from last year’s JV squad. We will need to have the experienced players step up to help those ‘newbies’ in order to have success.” Tubbs said the team has been training well in the preseason, with a good work ethic and “great enthusiasm.” “There is good overall team speed and communication,” Tubbs said. “The team will need to continue to improve skill wise and younger players will need to be willing to learn from older players, as the season progresses as well as they are doing now.” Members of the Lady Sentinel roster include Savannah Bezon, Brittany Bruce, Rachel White, Avery Alkinburgh, Kiersten Alkinburgh, Jordyn Borho, Kaylee Coon, Kassir Giganto, Sam Holmberg, Emily Hood, Delaney Hughes, Skyler LaBounty, Kristen Palandrani, McKenzie Price, Sara Vradenberg, Haleigh Wright and Abby Young. Tubbs is assisted by JV coach Tina Russell and modified coach Michelle Stahl.

Sentinels plan to be prepared for Class D title game By Keith Lobdell

keith@suncommunitynews.com

TICONDEROGA — The defending Class D champions hope they will be ready to keep the trophy out of the hands of rival Moriah. To do so, they will need to improve throughout the season, as graduation dealt a large blow to the squad. “We hope to be competitive each week of the season, “ head coach Scott Nephew said. “We want to be ‘ready to go’ for the class D final on Oct. 30, which is always a battle.” The team which finished 7-4 last season, falling to Cambridge/Salem in the Class D regional final, will return six starters to the offensive side of the ball in various positions, including running back Ryan Trudeau. “A good number of our players have worked hard in the off-season and are excited to get started,” Nephew said. “Competition for starting positions has been very strong, and will only help us throughout the season. A roster of 25 players should give us depth in many spots.” However, only four starters return to the defensive side of the ball, including defensive linemen Chase Dixon along with Trudeau and Brody Rocque at the linebackers position. “We will need younger players to step up,” Nephew said. “Replacing several key players on both sides of the ball and their leadership will be a difficult task.” Lineman and linebacker Brandon McKeown is also expected to play a large role for the Sentinels this season. Under center, Rocque and Evan Graney will be the signal callers, while Graney could also see time in the defensive secondary. Trudeau will be joined at running back by the Granger Duo - Jevyn and Justyn - with Justyn playing in the secondary on defense and Jevyn joining Trudeau in the linebacking corps. Chandler Whitford will play receiver along with defensive end, while receivers who may also see time in the defensive secondary include Cody Huestis, Brett Mosier, Zack Bennett, Griffin Hughes, Colin Bressett and Chris Robinson. Jarod Pike and Samuel DuShane will line up near the ball, either as a tight end on offense or defensive end, while Jacob Spaulding will take snaps and tight end and linebacker. Two-way lineman will include Dixon, Caleb Munson, Isaiah LaRock, Joe Wells, Ezra Long and Karl teRiele. Those who will play on the line and as linebackers include McKeown, Seth Hamel, Connor Lawrie and Alex Sharrow. Nephew is assisted by Dan Dorsett, Bob Sutphen, Todd Mitchell and Jim Decker.

Lady Panthers set sights on postseason run By Keith Lobdell

keith@suncommunitynews.com

CROWN POINT — With many teams, it’s about the players who are leaving that defines a preseason. For the Lady Panther varsity soccer program, however, it’s about who is coming back. While the squad lost seniors Heather Ryan and Mara Vradenburg, they return a pair of stars who were injured for all or most of the 2014 season in strikers Brittany Foote (ACL) and Torrie Vradenburg (broken leg). “Torrie Vradenburg and Brittany Foote should be coming on strong this season, both having come back from serious injuries,” head coach Jayna Anderson said. The duo will be joined on the front line by Kayli Stone, who rose to the occasion when given the chance last season, scoring the Panther’s post-season goal in the opening round of the Class D playoffs. “Combining Torrie and Brittany with Kayli Stone should make for a threatening front line,” Anderson said. “The midfield will be solid with Logan Harrington and Hannah Palmer, both goal scorers and excellent passers. The defence will be very fast and aggressive, led by Shelby DeLaire and Amber DuShane.” With the depth of players and solid core, Anderson said this is a season the squad has been waiting for. “We want to win the MVAC and make a strong showing in sectionals, very high expectations for an impressive season and the girls have been working very hard in the preseason,” she said. “We have experience and speed, a fast and aggressive defense, solid midfield and quick, talented front line... no weak spots.” Anderson added the team will need to focus on better communication, passing and trapping in the preseason in order to meet their goals in November. Members of the Lady Panthers roster include Kayli Stone, Maria Malone, Shelby DeLaire, Taylor Noel, Amber DuShane, Swade Potter, Abigail Carpenter, Mickaela Gunnison, Logan Harrington, Bridget Crowningshield, Christina Simpson, Torrie Vradenburg, Hannah Palmer, Heather Foote, Courtney Wranowski, Brittany Foote and Bailey Noel.

CROWN POINT — The Panther varsity boys soccer program will return plenty of experience when they take the field to start the 2015 season. “We return 12 players that started at some time last season,” coach Randy Pertak said. “We have very high goals of repeating as Division III champs again and moving even further in sectionals.” Pertak said the sectional loss to Minerva/Newcomb in the opening round of last year’s playoffs has been a motivation. “It was a huge let down of a game,” he said. “That has sparked a desire to push themselves even harder this season.” While the Panthers will look to replace goalie Brendan Crowningshield and a midfielder, Pertak has a solid core with 2014 Times-Enterprise team captain Noah Macey leading the way. “We return the league MVP in Noah Macey and three first team all-stars in midfielder Judd DeBrobander and fullbacks Kolby Pertak and Chad Stephens,” he said. “We have all of the pieces to have a great season. We need returning players to step-up this year, especially seniors Erick DuShane and Sam Millington, juniors Chance Potter and Jamie LaDeau and sophomores Hunter Pertak and Cade DeBrobander.” Sophomore Jacob Norton is slated to be goal keeper.

Noah Macey

“He had a fantastic season last year on modified and has a great defense in front of him to take some pressure off him early on, but he will need to mature in a hurry,” Pertak said. Along with a solid number of returning players, Pertak said the addition of some new players will give the team depth. “We have our largest roster in years with some valuable subs as role players,” he said. Members of the Panther roster include Kolby Pertak, Judd DeBrobander, Erick DuShane, Sam Millington, Alec Arno, Zachary Russell, Jamie LaDeau, Chad Stephens, Noah Macey, Chance Potter, Jon Roch Sears, Hunter Pertak, Cade DeBrobander, (Benji) Vaanchig Javkhlan, Jacob Norton, Jayden Spaulding, Dominque Austin, Zach Spaulding and Jacob Ladeau.

Vikings return solid core to gridiron in quest for D title By Keith Lobdell

keith@suncommunitynews.com

PORT HENRY— The Moriah varsity football program will look to build on late-season success as it hopes to take back the Class D title in 2015. “We have some skilled athletes back,” head coach Don Tesar said. “The biggest thing is going to be putting together an offensive line.” The Vikings lost seven players off last year’s squad, but return 14, including nine of the 11 defensive starters from one year ago. “We should be able to pick up from where we left off when it comes to the defensive side of the ball,” Tesar said. The Vikings will have plenty of height in their passing game, with quarterback Adam Jaquish (6’7”) throwing the ball to targets Taylor Slattery (6’5”) and Jarrod MacDougal (6’2”). “Adam was throwing the ball well last year before he got hurt,” Tesar said. “Taylor is a great athlete who can get up and Jarrod has a great set of hands. It makes things a little easier if we need to throw having these players back.” Tesar said Noah Gilbo will replace Slattery at the tight end position, while Cody Stockwell will play fullback and a committee of tailbacks led by Colin Harris will all see time in the backfield. In order for the backs to see any daylight, though, Tesar stressed line play will be the key. “We really need to improve our strength on the offensive line, build on technique and get better at it,” he said. Members of the 2015 Vikings football team include Noah Gilbo, Adam Jaquish, Colin Harris, Bill Larrow, Jarrod MacDougal, Todd Clarke, Jordan Cheney, Riley Shea, Jared Gibbs, Caleb Yelle, Taylor Slattery, Cody Stockwell, Malik Tromblee, Nick Rotella, Lane Decker, Ben Snow, Jared Firlik, Todd Gregory, Kyle Wilson, Ethan Java, Branden Hammond, Ryan Flack, Ray Bryant, Zach Harter, Trevor MacDougal, Tyre Bankston and Jacob Gibeau.

Wildcats look forward to future with new coach By Keith Lobdell

McKayla Vanderwalker

SCHROON — After a summer of wondering, the Schroon Lake girls varsity soccer team will field their own squad in 2015. Katie Jenks will enter her first season as the head coach of the squad, which will be missing a number of familiar faces. “We have moved up two ninth graders and we have a lot of sophomores,” Jenks said. “There is just one senior. They are all just really excited to get started with the season and to be able to have their own team.” MaKayla Vanderwalker will return to anchor the Wildcat defense from the goalie position, while Alora Bearor and Emily Maisonville are also expected to play key roles for the Wildcats. The team will also add Corrine Pelkey, who played last season for the combined boys and girls varsity program at Mountainside Christian Academy as one of the team’s leading scorers. “I am really excited to see what she can do on the field and how she can help us,” Jenks said. As the team prepares for the season, Jenks said conditioning will play a major role. “With as few players as we will have coming off the bench, we need to get some lungs for the season and them have some fun,” Jenks said. Members of the Lady Wildcats roster include Alysen Bruce, Grace Higgens, Alora Bearor, Abigail Belrose, Amanda Grey, Samanth Grey , Emily Maisonville, Corrine Pelkey, Ashlyn Lough, Savannah Macri, Tiffany Nolan, McKayla Vanderwalker and Ruth Jabaut.

Johnsburg, Schroon Lady Jaguars seek to Lake boys join forces make sectional run By Keith Lobdell

By Keith Lobdell

JOHNSBURG — The Johnsburg varsity soccer program will seek to compete in the third division of the Northern Soccer League in 2015, along with the addition of several players from Schroon Lake Central School. “As young as we are, one of our strengths will be experience,” head coach Matt Wells said. “We have six seniors and seven returning starters from last year’s team, as well as four starters from last years’ Schroon Lake team.” With 10 starters returning between the two programs now merged into one, Wells believes it will make for a good season. “This is an important year for our soccer program,” he said. “Our expectation is to be competitive in every game, while developing 10 sophomores in the process.” Four starters do not return for Johnsburg, and Wells said key positions will have to be addressed. “After loosing four starters from last year’s squad, including our starting sweeper, center midfielder and striker, the ability for some of last year’s complimentary players to raise their game and become major contributors is in question,” he said. “The performance of our sophomores will determine how successful we can be, as their improvement from last

NORTH CREEK — The Lady Jaguar varsity soccer program will seek to return to the Section VII/Class D playoffs in 2015 with a talented core of returning players. “The five seniors we lost will be missed, but I have a strong core of players,” head coach Cindy Homer said. “The leadership needs to develop through the group, but the team has formed already and they are lifting each other up.” Savanna Berg, who was forced into goalie duty last season, will man the position in Megan Bacon 2015. Makayla Denno will return from her injury and go into the field, where Homer believes she will be a difference maker, along with midfielders Megan Bacon and Taylor Dwyer.

year will be key to our team’s success.” Wells will look for key contributions from senior defenders Chris Barror, Tyler Glover and Evan Riedinger. “Last year’s Johnsburg and Schroon Lake leading scorers Kraig Millington, Jordan DaZalia and Branden Hall should lead our attack,” he said. “Ty Berg and Seamus Tomb will be our leaders in the midfield.” Members of the 2015 Jaguar roster include Chris Barror, Ty Berg, Mark Cleveland, Joe Foote, Tyler Glover, Evan Riedinger, Branden Hall, Caleb Buck, Jordan DeZalia, Liam Connelly, Nathan Kinblom, Logan McKinney, Kraig Millington, Patrick Riedinger, Brendan Tomb, Casey Tomb, Seamus Tomb and Dawson West. Wells is assisted by Gene Maiorana and Steve Tomb.

Tori Glover and Jamie Bruce are also expected to help the squad. “They are both very aggressive,” Homer said. The team has some newcomers, which Homer will look to integrate into the system during the season. “Our goal is always sectionals, so we need to have a .500 record or better,” Homer said. “We need to play each game better than the last to get to our first goal. From there, we want to get out of the first game of sectionals.” Members of the Lady Jaguar roster include Sara Pierson, Emily Persons, Makayla Denno, Dylan Harris, Savanna Berg, Tori Glover, Yana Kinblom, Jamie Bruce, Amara Mitchell, Taylor Dwyer, Megan Bacon, Kahleah Cleveland and Ryan Riedinger.

WCS volleyball team seeks to continue 2014’s momentum By Thom Randall

thom@suncommunitynews.com

WARRENSBURG — After a dozen years of frustrating seasons, the Warrensburg volleyball team staged a comeback last year that surprised sports fans in the region. In 2014, the team launched their campaign with three early-season wins that shocked many of their competitors. Several key players in those victories are heading up the 2015 team’s lineup — and the Burgers’ long-awaited resurgence is expected to continue this year. Those standouts include Jayden Cain, who scored 16 points and six aces in that 2014 season debut against Corinth; and Angie Miller, another junior who scored 13 points and three aces in a 2014 early-season victory over Hadley-Luzerne. Both are now juniors, and are the top returners along with Ashley Benz, also a junior, and Sydney Ladd-Russell, a Sophomore. Jayden Cain, formerly a right-side player and setter, has moved to right side/outside hitter position. Angie Miller has been assigned to the post of setter and right-side player. Ashley Benz will be holding down the outside/ middle hitter position. They are joined by Sydney Ladd-Russell, who has a powerful serve and will be making her mark as an outside hitter, as well as Kelly Angell, a talented athlete, who’ll be in the middle-hitter position. New players on the team showing a lot of promise include Kim Johnson, a junior middle hitter; Autumn Mahler, a sophomore right-side hitter

and setter; Liz Bonk, a sophomore outside player; and Mackenzie Roberts, an outside/middle hitter who hails from Bolton Central — the team’s sole recruit from BCS after a merger this year of the two schools’ fall sports programs. Lost to graduation were Kaylene Norton, the 2014 team’s powerful middle hitter, blocker and server; Cierra Tyrell, former outside hitter and floor leader. Also absent this year is standout Leah Terrell, the 2014 team’s power hitter and server, who moved to Connecticut. The 2014 team tallied a 4-10 season overall, the

best in many years for Warrensburg High. The Burghers’ 2015 team’s players expect to build on this momentum — and reach for greater accomplishments, said third-year coach Robin Winslow Mahler. Returning juniors Miller, Cain, Benz and LaddRussell are expected to lead the team in their 2015 crusade, considering they’ve played together since freshman year, coach Mahler said. “My challenge this year is to find the right combination of players that mesh well, and that involves moving players into positions where they

will do their best and help the team.” She added that she’s counting on Miller and Cain for leadership — to run the floor and keep their teammates communicating during competition. “So far, pre-season practice has been impressive, with the newcomers demonstrating their knowledge of volleyball and the team’s aggressive serving and consistent passing.” Mahler continued that she’s happy about Mackenzie Roberts joining the team, and expects more students from Bolton Central to join the merged squad in future years. “Mackenzie is very athletic and a nice kid,” Mahler said, noting that her mother played volleyball at Bolton decades ago when the school had a volleyball program. “She will be a good addition to the team.” Known for her positivism and player encouragement, Mahler said she and her players were looking forward to the 2015 schedule. “I have a good feeling about this season,” she said, noting that the pre-season includes some very challenging competitors that will help prepare the players for tough upcoming contests. “The teamwork and friendship of my players will help us in achieving our goals.” The 2015 Warrensburg High School Varsity Volleyball team includes: (front, left to right): Autumn Mahler, Angie Miller, Mackenzie Roberts, (rear): Jayden Cain, Kim Johnson, Ashley Benz, Liz Bonk, Kelly Angell, Sydney Ladd-Russell. For 2014, Burghers have varied offensive weapons By Thom Randall

thom@suncommunitynews.com

WARRENSBURG — With a deep lineup of veterans — and their recent commitment to muscle-building, the Warrensburg High School varsity football team will likely be highly competitive this year. The Burghers will have a wide variety of offensive weapons, including veteran running backs Joey Schuster and Donnie Stone — who have been running the ball around or plowing straight through defenders routinely since they were stars in local youth football. Veteran play-caller Jake Nemec is likely to return as quarterback, but in late August coach Mike Leonbruno was also prepping three other players for the position. Nemec has been a key player making headlines for Warrensburg his entire high school career — remember his touchdown throw on a trick double-reverse play for a shocking lastsecond come-from-behind victory in 2013 against Lake George? While Warrensburg has historically relied on a running game, their quarterback may pass more often this year as the has a number of players who have a decent arm, and several tall, fast receivers on board. Last year’s team had versatility and power, accomplishing some exciting, crowd-pleasing plays, even if it was not always reflected in the final score. One highlight of the year was defeating traditional rival Lake George 24-12 — which has in the past won three-fourths of the football showdowns between the two schools. In that 2014 face-off, the Burgher backs went wild. Stone racked up 102 yards for the day; Schuster, 67 yards; Greg Shambo, 85 yards, and Nemec, 22. The prior week was the team’s other season highlight — they beat Fort Edward after racking up no less than five unanswered touchdowns in the first half. Schuster and Stone had two each, and Jake Nemec connected on a 47-yard pass play for the fifth. Leonbruno predicted that Stone, Schuster and

Nemec would be pulling off some big plays this year like they did in 2014. “They’re exciting players to watch, and we expect a lot from them this year,” he said. Three key players on the 2014 team — Lineman Rogers McLaughlin and fullbacks Alec Olden and Aiden Szabo won’t be back, as they graduated in June. Szabo was a relentless defender, McLaughlin was a stone wall on the line, and Olden was an allaround athlete. Leonbruno, however, is confident that others will be stepping up and performing well in their place. “This year, I’ve got the strongest players I’ve ever had,” said Leonbruno, who’s coached Warrensburg for seven years. “Our line is young but they’re looking pretty good. They’ve spent a lot of time recently in the weight room.” With only a few seniors graduating in 2014, Leonbruno has a deep roster of battle-hardened veterans this year, he said. “We’re expecting that our team will be a lot more knowledgeable about what we’re doing,” he said. A new merger of Warrensburg and Bolton Central’s fall sports programs yielded five new players for the Warrensburg-Bolton team. Two should see

some significant time in Varsity games, Leonbruno said. “It’s exciting to have Bolton on board now,” he said. Warrensburg is staying with their hard-charging double wing offense, in which a running back is surrounded by a wedge of blockers who plow through their opponents, gaining a half-dozen yards at a time — or breaking away for a long run. This offensive strategy caught opponents offguard when it was initiated three years ago, and has suited each successive teams’ strengths. “We’re staying with the same stuff,” Leonbruno said. “Our players are well-schooled in the double wing.” But that doesn’t mean that Warrensburg won’t add some new plays along the way, Leonbruno said. This week, Leonbruno praised his coaching staff, which has been beefed up this year. The assistant coaches include Pat Gormley, Al Perrone, Frank Miller, Kyle Holtz — and volunteers Nate Brown, Nick Lavigne and Mike Kocher. New for 2014 is an early season schedule that features some remarkably stiff competition. The year starts with a non-conference game at 1 p.m. Sept. 5

against Rye Neck at Dietz Stadium in Kingston NY, then perennially tough Section II opponent Cambridge at home Sept. 12, followed by another home game Sept. 19 against Millbrook. Both Cambridge and Millbrook fought their way into the state semifinals last year. This rigorous schedule is likely to prepare the Burghers well for their rivals in Section II, Leonbruno said. “We’re all excited about the season — we hope to start out strong and go forward,” Leonbruno said. “We’ve got a great group of players with outstanding attitude.” The 2015 Warrensburg High School Football team includes: (front, left to right): Alex Barber, John Kindred, Jake Nemec, Joe Schuster, Don Stone IV, Brady Rounds, Jason Baker, Trevor Prosser, (row 2): Justin Rehm, Greg Shambo, Evan MacDuff, Chris Simpson, Dan Monthony, Mackenzie Blydenburgh, Dustin ‘Big Country’ McGarr, Mark Monthony, Brandon Bailey, (row 3): Cole Lanfear, Isaiah Pasco, Braley Duell, Mike Gavin, Garrison Villeneuve, Sean Winter, Hunter Mosher, Mike Miller, (row 4): Jarod West, Don Carpenter, Wesley Deyoe, Mike Lefebvre and Cole Ahambo.

Bolton-Wbg’s stellar girls soccer team sets its sights on 2015 By Thom Randall

thom@suncommunitynews.com

BOLTON LANDING — Loaded with talent and armed with a player who garnered national status, the Bolton-Warensburg girls soccer team achieved an unprecedented string of victories in 2014. The history-making squad won the Adirondack League and Section II championships as they took their fans for a long, wild and joyous ride into the state Final Four. It was the first time ever that Bolton High had won a regional title or advanced to the state tournament in any sport. The team’s leading player, Olivia Seamans, smashed Bolton High School records in 2014 with her offensive prowess. She now holds a slew of sports records at Bolton Central in soccer, including most career goals, career assists, season goals and season assists. Through their 2014 season, the players captured the hearts of thousands of fans in the Adirondacks and the Capital District. From that team, Olivia Seamans — a key player on a club soccer team that won a 2013 national championship — and Sarah Calzada, another top soccer star, have both been lost to graduation.

The 2015 team is now realigning, seeking to build on the unprecedented success of 2014. This year, the soccer team will be moving up and competing in Class C. However, they will remain in the highly competitive Adirondack League. The team has a considerable challenge ahead competing with Lake George, Whitehall, and Fort Ann — schools which have very solid soccer programs, Bolton-Warrensburg girls soccer coach Patrick Morency said. “We have an uphill battle trying to replace the leadership of five-year starter Olivia Seamans and four-year starter Sarah Calzada,” he said. “And our team must improve defensively — individually and collectively — so we can use our energy to press the ball all over the field to force turnovers and feed our attack.” Veteran goalkeeper, Andi Pfau — honored as a NYS Class D All Star, the Section II Goalkeeper of the Year, and Adirondack League All-Star — must step up her effort and make the saves that will help her team win close games, Morency said. Also, the team needs to nurture the goalscoring skills of the newer 2015 players in order to replace the outstanding offensive firepower of Olivia Seamans, Morency continued. “We need to continue working hard in order

to prove to everyone that, despite our limited depth, we can compete in Class C,” he said. Offensively, the team will be lead by Junior Abbie Seamans — Olivia’s award-winning, record-setting younger sister —and Senior Ryley Scott, Erin Courchaine, Chloe Monroe, Caitlyn Speranza and Melanie Warner. Abbie Seamans finished last season with 23 goals and 17 assists, was selected as an Adirondack League All Star, a Section II First Team All-Star, and a NYS Class D 2nd Team AllState player. Also, she scored key goals in 2014 that were pivotal in achieving those coveted titles. Ryley Scott of Warrensburg tallied 14 important goals in 2014 and was selected as a 2nd Team Adirondack League All-Star. Erin Courchaine was awarded 1st team league All-Star and NYS Class D Section II AllStar. She is five-year starter who Morency said is an intelligent and deceptively quick player with a knack for scoring important goals and creating scoring opportunities for her teammates. Sophomore Chloe Monroe has developed into a solid soccer player through her hard work and playing club soccer year-round, the coach added. Morency is expecting that Senior Melenie Warner applies her experience to create scor-

ing chances for her teammates and score goals as opportunities arise. Sophomore Caitlyn Speranza, an honorable mention league AllStar — also a year-round club soccer player — is a versatile veteran midfielder who is tough on defense, Morency said. He is expecting Speranza to score goals when she gets a clear shot. Senior Kenzie Tennent, Junior Caitlyn Johnson, Sophomores Nyla Green, Madeline DeLorenzo, and Natalya Greene, Freshman Meghan McGurl, and 8th Grader Summer Foy will be counted on to contribute to the attack as well. Defensively, Bolton will be lead by returning starters Madelyn Pratt, an Honorable Mention league All-Star, Lindsay Markham, Caroline Clesceri, Erin Courchaine, and goalie Pfau. First-year player Ashley Connery, a sophomore, will likely contribute to the defensive efforts — she’s been working hard gaining skills to serve as the team’s backup goalkeeper. Morency said that for the team to achieve their goals, players must focus their effort on the day-to-day work improving both personal skills and teamwork. “We are simply trying to win each day by embracing the idea that big rewards come to those who willingly travel that second ‘undemanded mile,’” he said.

M/N girls look to retool M/N boys boast new talent By Keith Lobdell

keith@suncommunitynews.com

By Keith Lobdell

NEWCOMB — The Minerva-Newcomb girls varsity soccer team will be looking for players to fill several key roles in 2015. While the biggest absence may be of 122goal scorer and Times-Enterprise team captain Makenzie Winslow, coach Candice Husson believes she has the next great Lady Mountaineer scorer in junior Jordan Bush. “She was injured (broken foot) half way through last season so no one has really seen her full potential,” Husson said. “Her main focus was also to feed Makenzie and not worry about scoring.” Danielle McNally Bush scored 10 goals for the Mountaineers before being sidelined in 2014. Husson will also be looking to replace the entire defensive unit from the Section VII/ Class D finalist and undefeated Northern Soccer League Division III champs, which included T-E starters Astasia Myler (goal-graduation) and Cheyenne Williams (sweeper, did not come out for team). Stopper Rachael Bush and a trio of wings in Madison Miller, Nicole Rubertone and Michaela Moses. While graduating 10, six members of the highly successful 2014 squad return, including Jordan Bush, Danielle McNally Taylor Fieden, Isabelle Bureau, Megan O’Donnell and Meranda Allen. “The girls are taking what they learned from the seniors last year and are using it with our younger players,” Husson said. “They are all positive heading into the season and they want to have some fun.” Members of the Lady Mountaineers roster include Taylor Feiden, Danielle McNally, Isabelle Bureau, Megan O’Donnell, Meranda Allen, Katie Geiger, Jordan Bush, Rebecca Draper, Megan Dunkley, Kalie Dugan, Erica Demars, Alyssa Comeau, Emma Gocke, and Grace Armstrong.

MINERVA — The Minerva-Newcomb varsity boys soccer team finished second in the Northern Soccer League’s third division in 2014, but will have a lot of work to do in order to get back into the mix. Along with losing 10 members of the 2014 Mountaineer roster to graduation, the team also lost two-time Times-Enterprise starter Kalab Helms, who transferred to Lake George for the new school year. However, head coach Randy LaFountain will return eight players from last season, including Caleb Winter, who he expects to move from goal to a field position. “We expect him to contribute for us on the field,” LaFountain said. Riley Mather also returns to the mix. “He is not flashy, but he is a very strong and consistent player,” LaFountain said. The team will welcome back sweeper Randy DeCook, who left the team early in the 2014 season for personal reasons but returns to anchor the Mountaineer back third. The key for the season will be finding offense. “We only return two goals from last season, so we lost 95 percent of our scoring,” LaFountain said. “The defense should be okay so if we can find the offense, we will be competitive.” Another component of Mountaineer teams

has been the addition of exchange students to the roster. At the moment, LaFountain only knew of one who would be joining the team. “We usually do not know for sure until right before school starts,” he said. “We have one host family who is hosting two exchange students and they already let us know there is one who wants to play.” Members of the Mountaineers roster include Riley Mather, Randy DeCook, Dan Dunbar, Caleb Armstrong, Caleb Winter, Aiden LaCourse, Noah Hanneman, Garrett Austin, Ethan Pratt, Jay Goodspeed, Connor LaRose, Shane Bush-Lancaster, Grant Printy and Kaleb Davie.

Warriors football team looking for turnaround year By Thom Randall

thom@suncommunitynews.com

LAKE GEORGE — A talented team roster, which includes athletes on the reigning state champion Class C basketball team — is likely to produce a strong season for the Lake George High School football team, area sports enthusiasts say. Longtime football coach Jeff Bennett, who has presided over the team during seasons with explosive offense, talked this week with positivism about the team’s prospects for 2015. “We’ve got a great team for 2015 — not a lot of size, but great team speed,” he said. “We’re very athletic this year.” Not only will running backs and receivers be streaking downfield to gain yardage, he said, but the linebackers will be responding fast, making tackles quickly to contain opponents’ yardage gains. “Our secondary looks really solid this year — we have a really good linebacker core, he said. “Last year we struggled mightily in the secondary and let up so many big plays.” Joining the team in the secondary will be Zeke Reynolds, a member of that 2014 state champion basketball team, who last played football for Lake George in 7th and 8th grade. “Zeke will add a lot to the team,” Bennett said. “He’s really athletic, he’s got great hands, and he’s looking great in practice so far.” Shane McCabe, a key athlete on the school’s wrestling and baseball teams, also was identified by Bennett as a pivotal player. “He’s a great athlete — whether he’ll be a running back, wide receiver or quarterback,” Bennett

continued. While Lake George has often had a big, physical line, this year their defensive line has its work cut out for it, the coach said. The team will be missing two outstanding, steely linemen: Pat Barber and Tyler VandenBogaard. “The question mark for 2015 is really our D line — how much are we going to get out of them,” he said. The Warriors on the defensive line may just rise to the challenge, Bennett continued. “I don’t think well be letting up those big, big plays like we did last year,” he said, citing the 2014 team’s disappointing 0-9 win-loss record. “We’ll force the opposing team to go 10 to 12 plays to score, and that’s a big deal in high school football. Bennett praised his 2015 players for their knowledge of the game, their athletic skills and their dedication to football. “Our players have great football savvy,” he said. “Our secondary, the receivers, the running backs, the linebackers — they are all solid, they’re hunt-

ing the ball, and they’re looking good.” Although Lake George’s football program has a storied history, winning various championships through the 1980s, 1990s, and the early 2000s; the last eight years the team has routinely experienced disappointing seasons. Sports observers have said the prolonged slump is due to the school’s declining enrollment as well as its athletes being drawn to the school’s other very successful sports programs. This year’s football team, however, may be reversing course, taking fans for a ride towards reexperiencing the spirit and accomplishments of the Warriors’ glory years. Identifying his top players for 2015, Bennett

named Nick Motta at quarterback, Ricky Jowly as the primary running back, plus Brett Parsons, Dylan Bachem, Mike Sutliff, Steve Coletti, Noah Brumagen and Nick Ure. Motta, a junior, is new to the quarterback role. Jowly, a senior, gained over 1,000 yards last season. Motta and Parsons are captains of the team, Bennett said. “We’ll certainly be better than last season.” We’ll have a more exciting team with more weapons. We are going to try to get the athletes the ball in space and let them have some fun,” he said. “This year’s players are highly motivated — They are working hard at football because they want to,” he continued. “For 2015, we’ve got great leadership.” Bennett noted that in 2014, the school’s modified team had a 7-0 record, and the junior varsity was 4-3, and the number of students is increasing dramatically in the lower grades. “The Lake George football program is now moving in the right direction,” he said. Warriors retool after graduating 15 soccer players By Thom Randall

thom@suncommunitynews.com

LAKE GEORGE — Year after year, Lake George High School boys soccer coach Blake White makes modest predictions about his new team’s upcoming season. “It’s a rebuilding year” is a phrase he’s often used. Then within weeks, predictable as can be, the team surpasses expectations and racks up victories on they’re way to a championship — or two or three titles. The year 2014 was no exception. This stellar squad defeated the no. 1 ranked team in the area, and went on to win the Section II Class C championship. Advancing to the regional finals, the Warriors set a new school record for scoring 100 goals in a season. Also, team standout Craig Keenan, a senior, broke his own career scoring record by tallying 87 goals in their 18-2-1 season. Keenan is now the all-time school points leader at 123. He was named an Adirondack League All-Star for three years, and an All-

State athlete for 2014. Keenan and 14 of his teammates graduated, which means a slew of younger players will be moving up to fill their roles. Also exiting in June was Ian Quillinan, a center-midfielder who White said ran the show. Ian was honored as Section II Player of the Year, an All-State soccer athlete for 2014 and 2013, and an Adirondack League All-Star. Also graduating in June were forward John

Rubado and defenders Matt Flaherty and Andrew McGowan. In 2014, Rubado tallied 16 goals and numerous assists; Flaherty and McGowan were key players in the backfield. Top players returning this year include first-team league All-Star defender Noah Prime, who White said was “a terrific player, leader of the defense last year.” Also returning are Cooper Perkett, Luke Vanderminden, and Eli Gowen. Perkett was Prime’s partner in the backfield, and was

named second-team league All-Star for his aggressive play. Midfielder Vanderminden, a junior, was also named to the league’s second All-Star team. Van derminden will be taking over Quillinan’s role, running the field play. Gowen, a junior, will be returning as goaltender after a solid first year, White said. “This year’s group will be a hustling and fast team,” White said. “We will continue to play a possession style game as we put more pressure on opponents.” White described his 2015 squad as a hardworking, close-knit group. As always, they are among the hundreds of players moving through the Lake George soccer program that have taken advantage of spring soccer and summer soccer camp to improve their game, White said. “This team is eager to learn and carry on the recent success of our program,” said the 34-year coach who has himself set regional records for wins and championships. “We have a number strong players coming up from junior varsity to compliment our returning players.”

Warriors depth, experience keys to 2015 success By Thom Randall

thom@suncommunitynews.com

LAKE GEORGE — There’s a proud legacy of a strong soccer program at Lake George High School — and the girls varsity soccer team has always been embraced by the community. While some sports programs at Lake George have enjoyed temporary streaks of success, the soccer teams have consistently been either winning championships or contending for titles, year after year. Launched about two decades ago, the girls soccer team experienced considerable success right out of the gate, and it has continued this tradition ever since. Last year, the team was in contention for the Adirondack League title, but lost to Bolton-Warrensburg, the squad that took their winning campaign all the way to the state Final Four. In the 2014 Section II tournament, Lake George defeated Maple Hill in the first round, but lost to Canajoharie in the final minutes of double overtime, even though the Warriors outshot them, coach Mike McLaughlin said. The Lake George team ended their year with a winloss record of 12-5-1.

This year, the Lake George team is likely to have a stellar season, considering the lineup of experienced returning veterans and the squad’s depth. Five players were lost to graduation — two attackers, two defenders, and one utility player. They’ve been replaced by talented players of similar quality who are very team oriented, McLaughlin said. “We have a very balanced team this year with well-rounded play-

ers,” he said. One major disappointment has been the year-long sidelining of Nicole Nolan due to a blown ACL. She’s an All-State player who was a top offensive threat and a team leader in 2014. “It’s a big loss, considering Nicole’s dynamic style of playing, but we have players that have stepped up — and we should have the ability and talent in our roster to compensate for this, with some adjustments,” McLaughlin said. Nolan is now serving as the team manager, bench captain and scorekeeper this year, the coach said. The team’s lineup this year possesses considerable experience, McLaughlin said. “A great number of these girls have played together for upwards of 10 years —and they’re very close,” he said. “A lot of them play club soccer — They are just great, solid players.” McLaughlin predicted success for 2015, particularly due to the depth of his squad. “Prospects for this year are very exciting,” he said. “We have our strongest roster ever, top to bottom, for skill and experience. Even our underclass athletes have multiple years of experience.” Season-long score tallies aren’t as important as the players acquiring skills related to teamwork, collaboration — and a motivation to pursue lifelong fitness, McLaughlin said. “Win-loss records aren’t the most important — but athletes playing to their full potential is,” he said. “And we feel the 2015 team will be doing that as they pursue their goals.”

Cougar field hockey team: youthful but ambitious By Thom Randall

thom@suncommunitynews.com

CHESTERTOWN — The North Warren High School field hockey team lost seven standout players to graduation in June, but fans aren’t worried about the team’s prospects for this year. The solid 2014 squad of accomplished athletes included then-seniors Taylor Feldeisen, Kerrianne Belline, Sarah Converse, and Julianna Dewar on defense — and Amanda Braynack, Anna Liebelt and Charlie Reidinger handling offense. The team tallied a 7-7 win-loss record, reflecting how North Warren athletes are tough and their teams are quite competitive, despite being fielded by a school with limited enrollment. Top returning players for 2015 are Cate Hill, Hannah Kenney, Morgan Yarosh, Sarah Stewart, Brooke French, Sydney Gagnon, long-time coach Lynn Lewis said, noting that all have varsity experience. “This year’s success will be determined by the leadership and the versatility of the players,” she said, adding that with all the athletes who graduated, their younger teammates will need to step up, adjust and learn new roles quickly. “Our players this year have some big shoes to fill in almost every position on the field,” she said. Coach Lewis said she expects to face some challenges early on, as the new players coming up from the modified team adjust to playing at the varsity level. There was no junior varsity squad last year. “This year’s team is primarily young, but has talent, scoring ability and they are learning to work together on each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” she said. Coach Lewis said that despite her team’s youth, the athletes could yield a pleasant surprise, as the 2010 field hockey team did. Tanked dead last in the league during the 2010 pre-season by

sportswriters, that team clawed its way, game-by-game, to a league title. Called the “miracle team” by sportscasters, those athletes continued their improbable campaign in the post-season to capture Section II Class C runner-up honors. Cate Hill, a senior on the 2015 team, remembers the miracle team well — her cousin was on the squad. She said this week that her 2015 team might shock everyone like their predecessors who rewrote school history. “We’re definitely a young team, with six freshmen, but we know there’s a possibility to achieve anything,” she said. “Our team has a lot of potential.”

Teammate Hannah Kenney added her thoughts. “With a couple more practices, our players will get the experience they need — we’ll come together and really play well,” she said. “We get along well together — We’ll be making some good plays.” The 2015 North Warren High School Field Hockey team includes (front, left to right): Sydney Gagnon, Olivia Viele, Eliza Brown, Jaclyn Urtz, Mattelyn Beadnell, (row 2): Chelsea Yarosh, Hannah Kenney, Sarah Stewart, Morgan Yarosh, Cate Hill, Brook French and coach Lynn Lewis. Cougars know what it takes to win heading into ‘15 By Thom Randall

thom@suncommunitynews.com

CHESTERTOWN — There’s no question about it, North Warren athletes are overachievers. Despite hailing from the smallest school in the Adirondack League, they always compete like they are from a school twice its actual size. Whether it’s boys or girls basketball, field hockey or soccer, the Cougars are always strong contenders. Through the years, they’ve fought hard and won their share of coveted titles, surprising area sports commentators along the way. The boys soccer team is no exception. In 2014 they had a lateseason surge, propelling them into the Section II semifinals — despite the region hosting some extremely talented teams, coach Josh Gifford said. During that tourney campaign, they beat New Lebanon, which had been undefeated in the regular season.

“We ‘turned it on’ late last year — we were really fired up,” he said. “And for 2015, I’m looking to be consistent throughout the entire season.” Cougar standouts lost to graduation are Dan Tennyson, Colby May, Mike Terry, Nick Sapienza, and Daren Granger — the 2014 squad’s leading scorer. Despite this loss, the 2015 team has no less than eight veteran starters among the squad’s nine seniors and seven juniors. Top returning players are Chris DeFranco, goalkeeper; plus Dan Caunter, Stoan Bush, Justin Needham, Bryan Frasier, Mike Williamson, Orry Bruce and Colin Gagnon, Gifford said. “We thrive on working hard and have team chemistry both on offense and defense,” he said, noting that the team will be relying on seniors for leadership. Commenting on a few of the athletes, Gifford said junior Dan Caunter is one of the top scorers from 2014.

Ò WeÕ ll be looking for Dan to produce,Ó he said.

Chris DeFranco, a senior and three year starter, knows the game

well, is a skilled punter and has great hands, the coach continued. Stoan Bush executed defense well last year, shutting down

the opponentsÕ best players in assigned man-to-man matchups, Gifford added. The coach continued, noting that Justin Needham controls the midfield with expertise and is a solid defender along with Orry Bruce, Mike Williamson and Bryan Frasier. Ò They all do a great job defending,Ó Gifford said, adding that 2015 practices are going well. Ò Our players have speed, heart and determination Ñ as well as experience,Ó he said. Ó But to be successful, we must win together as a team Ñ no one person wins games for us.Ó Gifford’s players have competed together since modified ball, and most of the players are three-sport athletes, he said. And with the remarkable success of the CougarsÕ recent basketball teams, the soccer players have the confidence they need to rack up victories, he added. Ò Our soccer players know what it takes to win,Ó Ò TheyÕ re hungry, and really want to reach their goals.Ó

he said.

The 2015 North Warren High School Boys Soccer team includes (front row, left to right): Orry Bruce, Kyle Monroe, Chris DeFranco, Will Davis, Dan Caunter, (row 2): Ryan Fish (white T-shirt), James Hayes, Nicholas Hitchcock, Colin Gagnon, Jack Williamson, Eric Cooper, (rear): Bryan Frasier, Michael Williamson, Lane Feldeisen, Justin Needham, Stoan Bush, and coach Josh Gifford.

Lady Orange Orange seek to attain next level seek to replace on soccer field this season numbers By Keith Lobdell

LONG LAKE — The Lady Orange varsity soccer team will seek to keep everyone healthy in 2015, as graduation hit the merged program hard. “Between graduation and participation the bench is low in numbers,” head coach Robert Linhart said. “This could be a team’s downfall with a lack of subs.” While the team lost graduates Leah Foster, Alexis Seery, Kelsey Pierson, Molly Brouthers, Cheyenne Wilder and Victoria Moore, Linhart believes there is a decent core of talent returning to the field in 2015. “We come into the season with the goal of staying competitive in the MVAC,” he said. “The team lost a lot of players to graduation but still hold on to young talMaria Black ent.” So far, the team has been working hard in practice to prepare for the season. “The team comes everyday with a positive attitude. The talented, core group of young players should perform well in the MVAC this year,” Linhart said. Maria Black will be a key contributor in the front third for the Orange, while Lillian Dechene and Taylor Carroll will patrol the midfield. Members of the Lady Orange roster include Taylor Carroll, Sydney Benton, Maria Black, Lillian Dechene, Catherine Clark, Madelyn Penrose, Karmen Howe, Olivia Penrose and Ashley Ghostlaw.

Zach Hoag

INDIAN LAKE — The Orange boys varsity soccer team will hope to develop throughout the 2015 season into a viable threat come Class D playoff time. “We want to maintain a healthy, injury-free season with a full roster,” head coach Jim Piraino said. “In addition, we hope to start to develop to the best of our abilities, the mental and physical skills that will be needed to carry the athletes through their sports careers.” Piraino said his team has come to practice ready to learn and compete. “Despite the heat, summer vacation mode, and early morning practices, the athletes are demonstrating great physical fitness and thorough agility in the mental and physical aspects of soccer,” he said. Along with promoting greater on-the-ball skills and personal improvement as players, Piraino seeks to see a prepared unit on the field with a new core of players. “We need to communicate well and work as a team unit while developing individual strengths and skills,” he said. “More than half this team has this being there first year on varsity. We lost a great goalie to graduation, so preparing a couple of the athletes for this position.” Members of the Orange roster include Noah Pine, Zach Hoag, Casey Wells, Austin Pierce, Calvin Seaman, Chase Hutchins, Leif Rolsvig, Bryce Hutchins, Thomas Ross, Chandler O’Brien-Brown and Jon Olav Kristoffersen, one of an expected five foreign exchange students who will make up the 2015 slate of players.
