Railroad renewal? 5-year contract with SNCRR passes committee level

NORTH CREEK — A five-year contract with Iowa Pacific Holdings LLC, operators of Saratoga & North Creek Railway was approved by Warren County Public Works Committee this week, ensuring train service to the area. Ed Ellis, president of Iowa Pacific, was on hand Monday, dispelling misinformation that the county subsidizes the company. More than $6 million in salary goes to employees, primarily Warren County residents, he said. The contract guarantees $80,000 in annual revenue. It was estimated $1 million was brought in over the last five-year deal. While that money goes directly to the county, towns benefit from foot traffic at train stops. “We get a lot of tourist traffic in the sum-

mer time,” said Johnsburg Supervisor Ron Vanselow. “I’m happy to see that we signed on for another five years and hope they continue to contribute to the economic well-being of the north county.” Railway General Manager Justin Gonyo recently announced the dramatically expanded dinner service, as the railway will be offering 94 dining excursions this year from June 4 thru Oct. 28. The new contract retains the same language and requires track maintenance be handled by SNCRR, though it did see some opposition. Thurman Supervisor Evelyn Wood voted against renewing the document. Glens Falls Third Ward Supervisor Claudia Braymer, not on the committee but in attendance for the meeting, asked if the contract could be shorted as she believed the company failed to meet it’s obligations. >> Story Continued | pg. 8

TICONDEROGA — Following the recent settlement of a civil suit involving the hit and run death of Ticonderoga resident Anthony “Tony” Morette in 2009, the family of the late Ticonderoga native still relive the pain of that tragic day and hope for a confession to bring them closure. Morette was killed Dec. 2, 2009, when he was struck by a vehicle while running near the intersection of Shore Airport Road and Route 22 in Ticonderoga. >> See Settlement | pg. 11
