INDIAN LAKE — The community is rallying around the family of three-year-old Cameron Naubereit, who has been diagnosed with a rare brain cancer. A series of fundraisers and activities have been planned this spring to help the family with expenses. His parents, Sara and Robert, are grateful for the outpouring. “It’s not just family. It’s not just friends. It’s this whole town,” said Sara. She detailed the events leading up to the discovery that Cameron would soon be battling a non-germinoma cell tumor. “He was having headaches for about a month,” she said, though they were not daily, but randomly throughout February.

“He wasn’t screaming or anything. They just seemed like normal headaches, off and on.” With a family history of migraines and cluster headaches, the Naubereits weren’t terribly concerned until he began throwing up. They took him to the pediatrician, where they were told they’d be getting a referral to have a CT scan. They’d not heard anything yet about getting that test done, when they returned to the doctor two days later, his symptoms worsened. “He had a sore throat and body pains,” said Sara. Doctors suspected the flu or strep throat, though all tests came back negative. “They thought it could be viral, so we went home and were giving him lots of fluids,” she said. The following day, however, he wasn’t eating or drinking. His parents took him straight to the emergency room at Glens Falls Hospital, where doctors ran the same tests — flu >> See INDIAN LAKE | pg. 11
ATLAS graduation Saturday Students recount experiences in teen leadership program By Christina Scanlon

NORTH CREEK —A dozen area teens will complete this year’s Adirondack Teen Leadership and Service (ATLAS) program, with graduation set for Saturday. The leadership program, brought through the Johnsburg Youth Committee, under the direction of Deb Morris, owner of Barkeater Chocolates, focuses on preparing high school students to be leaders in their com-
munities throughout high school and beyond. Some of the upcoming graduates shared their experiences in the program: Savanna Berg, Junior at Johnsburg Central School
Why did you join ATLAS? I joined ATLAS because I went to last years graduation ceremony and I really enjoyed it. What experience stands out to you most from the program? The most influential experience I’ve had at ATLAS was the “Overcoming Obstacles” session because I met a man
who has lived his entire life with no arms or legs, but has accomplished so much. How do you think the program will affect you in the future? The program has taught me to stand up and be a leader. I used to be very shy and now I am more outgoing. Being a leader is a very important skill that will help me to achieve my goals in life. Fire departments from across the region — including North Creek, Garnet Lake, North River and Minerva — participated in a multi-agency training hosted by the Johnsburg Fire Department Saturday, March 26. The training consisted of multiple different training evolutions, including smoke-filled interior and exterior fire ground operations, charged hose line advancement, ladder placement, pump training, vent enter and search scenarios, radio communications and fire ground incident command training, said Minerva Fire Department member Greg Wright. Warren County Fire Car 2 and Johnsburg EMS also participated. “This type of training helps us provide a better service for our neighbors and friends here in the North Country,” said Wright said, who thanked Johnsburg for facilitating the exercise.
