POTTERSVILLE — For two years, Elle the Elephant stood sentinel in the front yard of the Howe residence on Olmstedville Road. It was not uncommon for a driver passing by to slow down and get a better glance at her hulking mass. Made of fiberglass, her details are realistic. The years have cracked her once fresh finish, now lending to a weathered patina, resembling the dry skin of a real pachyderm. “There’s a hatch underneath her belly,” Antoinette Howe said. “You can climb up in there and move her ears.” Her husband, Jason, has stabilized the ears, to prevent them from moving. “It’s just too windy here,” she said.
Northern Lights performs benefit concert for Indian Lk. farmers’ market

INDIAN LAKE — The group Northern Lights filled the Indian Lake Community Theater with the sounds of Celtic and Irish Folk Songs on Fathers’ Day, June 19. The primary reason for the concert was to benefit the Indian Lake Community Farmers’ Market, but the Celtic sounds also seemed somehow appropriate given the approaching Summer Solstice on June 21, what will be the longest day of 2016. The performers were John Sleckman (vocals, guitar and violin), Taff Fitterer (vocals and guitar), Camille Bodden (vocals and percussion), Jennifer Bine (vocals and guitar) and Harold Shippey (vocals and
acoustic bass). Songs ran the gamut from standards such as “Danny Boy,” and “Wild Rover,” through more contemporary pieces such as “Have I Told You Lately,” and “The Right Side of the Road,” made popular by Van Morrison. The entire show was performed against a backdrop of photographs of Ireland and the Adirondacks. Many of the individual pieces lent themselves to participation by a number of brave audience members and the concert closed with an audience sing-along of “Danny Boy.” The funds raised will directly benefit the Indian Lake Community Farmers’ Market, which will be operational on Saturdays, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., starting on July 2 and running through Saturday, Sept. 24. It
will be important to note that the location will now be in the parking lot of the former Hutchins Flooring Store. The market will feature (among other offerings): fruits, vegetables, maple syrup and maple products, preserves, baked goodies, flowers and plants and live demonstrations, as well as music from The Northern Lights and other talented local performers. The market is shepherded by a steering committee of dedicated local volunteers including: Reverend Father Philip Allen, Deborah Ameden, Jennifer Bine, Garet Church, Taff Fitterer, Mary Robertson, Brenda Valentine and Nancy Welch. For more information about attending the market, its composition or becoming a vendor, call 648-5636.
Chains stake Elle to the ground, also to avoid a different wind-related disaster. They resemble real elephant restraints, adding to her authentic qualities. “One time a DEC truck came right up here and took a look,” she said. She wasn’t sure if the visit was prompted by a call from a concerned citizen or the DEC officer himself. “Lots of people do a double take. Sometimes, they drive right down here,” she said, motioning from the bottom of their long driveway. The trees have sprouted up, preventing a good view of Elle from the road, reducing the number of curious visitors. “You can’t really see her anymore. I think it’s time for a new adventure for her,” she said. Jason joked of replacing her with a tall purple giraffe, visible from the road. To find her a new home, Antoinette took to Facebook and placed ads on three local online yard sale groups. >> See ELEPHANT | pg. 3
