Indian Lake residents soundly reject fire hall plan By Bill Quinlivan

news@suncommunitynews.com

INDIAN LAKE — Residents of Indian Lake Fire District #1 soundly defeated a plan last week to spend $2 million to repurpose the former Grand Union/IGA building in town for a new fire hall. In reaction, the owner of the building is threatening to close the large parking area adjacent to the former store to public parking. In a vote taken Aug. 23, only 63 residents cast ballots in favor of the fire hall plan with 206 of 269 voting against the project put forth by the board of fire commissioners. The fire commissioners had lobbied for the

move, pointing to the need for greater space for equipment, smooth operations and improved training facilities. Under the plan, the current fire hall would have been kept and revamped appropriately to become a community center. Residents attending the planning board meetings surrounding the proposal in late 2015 and early 2016 voiced concern over the cost of the project, which at that time was $1.6 million. That number has since grown to $2 million. According to Meade Hutchins, town assessor, two options had been put forth to pay for the project. The first included paying off a $2 million no interest loan in one year, at a cost of $622.37 for a fire district resident with

a home assessed at $150,000, plus $69.56 in operational costs. The second included bonding the $2 million at 2 percent interest and paying it back over 10 years. That would have cost the same resident with a $150,000 home $68.78 per year for 10 years, plus $69.56 in operational costs. A number of other concerns were raised by residents during the evaluation process, including whether the commercial center of the town was a good location for a new fire hall. Having emergency apparatus entering the intersection of Routes 28 and 30 with no traffic light present could pose a significant danger to pedestrians and motorists, residents said.

Lastly, residents were concerned over the loss of the large parking lot adjacent to the former Grand Union/IGA building, noting it is used by shoppers and visitors frequenting other downtown businesses. That, however, is precisely what may happen anyway, said David Tomney, the lawyer representing the board of fire commissioners. Tomney said the owner of the former Grand Union/IGA building — Ernest A. Pomerleau, chairman and CEO of Rouses Point Construction, Inc. based in Burlington, Vt — “was very unhappy” with the result of the vote and may prohibit the use of his property for public parking altogether. >> See FIRE HALL | pg. 12

MINERVA — Warm, clear weather, a great fundraising opportunity, and the chance to shoot at bright orange clay pigeons brought an enthusiastic group of shooters to the home of Steve and Pat Cuzzacrea on John Brannon Road on Saturday, August 27. Organized by the Minerva Bicentennial Veterans Committee, the shoot was a fundraiser for the veterans memorial park, which is currently under construction on the corner lot adjacent to the Minerva Town Hall. >> See SKEET | pg. 13
