Where has all the diesel gone? Kickerville Mobil still open, but without fueling services

LONG LAKE — The Kickerville Mobil Station has been without gas or diesel for about a month, with no firm date for the fuel to return. A tank replacement project is expected to be complete, “sometime next year,” according to Melodie Dutheil , station employee. Remaining services are business as usual, with daily specials, deli items and a full one of groceries. Signs on the pumps state there’s no diesel or gas available. Such notice hasn’t posed any major issues said Long Lake Town Supervisor Clark Seaman. “Initially, there were a couple inquiries,” he said of calls that came to the town office. “People were quick to figure it out,” he said of

finding the closest diesel pump, as Stewart’s Shop, the other gas station in town, doesn’t offer diesel. “It depends which way you’re going,” he said of where customers head to fill up. Tupper Lake to the North and Indian Lake to the South are the closest locations, Seaman believed. At Stewart’s Shops, an employee said they’ve not seen much of an increase in gas customers. Kickerville Mobil Station has been under the ownership of David Lamos for three years. Amos did not return a request for comment. Around town, rumors that the station of closing and that the building has no heat are not true, said Dutheil. She said some of the lack of heat rumors may have been prompted by a temporary heating equipment issue that was solved last winter.

A sign at the Kickerville Mobil station in Long Lake tells customers the business is no longer providing gas or diesel fuel services. A tank replacement is expected sometime within the next year.

CHESTERTOWN — The excitement is building in Chestertown, as Bright Beginnings readies to open. The new child care center is tucked away at 18 Be At Ease Lane, a hidden little drive off Route 9. The setting is serene, with Panther Mountain the beautiful landscape overlooking the soon to be installed play yard. Upon first inspection, you might think the property is a new build. Instead, it’s a compete renovation of a former gym. Three rooms await infants though school age children all full stocked for fun and learning.

“This is my dream job,” said owner Carrie Remington of deciding to open the facility. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in childhood education from SUNY Plattsburgh and followed it up with her Master’s in curriculum, instruction and special education from Concordia. Her knowledge of preschool learning will be an asset to the children who attend the center, as she will lead the pre-school room. “It’s data driven instruction,” she said of the curriculum, focusing on the needs of the children, with kindergarten readiness a priority for that age group.

While letters, counting and early literacy will be a focal point for the group, “There will be a lot of learning through play,” she said. “Pre-school is my favorite. I really can’t wait to get going.” For now, Remington is waiting what is hopefully her last review by the state Office of Children and Family Services. “They’ve been wonderful. They take all my calls and have helped me every step of the way,” she said of the oversight in getting licensed. She’s currently wrapping up some minor details in the facility which should be her final tasks to complete. >> Story Continued | pg. 3
