I

’m not a CPA, accountant or lawyer. I have no degree in political science or economics. I’m a high school grad with a couple years of college. I have no insider information on the inner workings of the federal government, but I’ve been challenged by several readers to be more specific in my column regarding sequestration and offer possible suggestions on how we go about easing the pain of reducing Uncle Sam’s spending by $85 billion. We all know there isn’t one single dollar the government spends that someone doesn’t think is critically important. But to set the stage for what we are up against, I urge you go watch this simple dramatization of our nation’s current $16 trillion+ debt at demonocracy.info. We must reduce our spending. Let me start by stating the obvious. I don’t know of one executive administrator who is responsible for managing anything who doesn’t want to control the checkbook and have some say in income generation. I can only come to one conclusion as to why the president isn’t coming forth with a plan. He wants nothing to do with leading the nation. His goal seems to be cuts must hurt, so make the cuts felt and then blame others for the pain. He also seems reluctant to put forth his own cost-saving solutions therefore avoiding any personal blame. This is the exact opposite of what a president should do. Harry Truman said it best: “The buck stops here.” With the limited information available to me, here are my recommendations if I were in the Oval Office. As a sign of good faith and leadership, we start at the White House. The best estimates I can find tell me it costs about $1.7 billion to run the White House. I’d immediately direct the WH staff, including the presidency, to trim 10 percent from all salaries associated with WH personnel, curtail all extraneous travel, including Air Force One and cut our operational spending by the same amount. I urge Congress to do the same 10 percent cut, and together we can lead the nation to a $1 billion savings. Leadership starts with the leaders. Next I’d turn to the nearly three million federal employees. We can either cut positions or we can all agree to take a 5 percent across-the-board pay deduction. It

will save the American public about $10 billion, and everyone gets to keep their jobs. I’m suggesting another $1 billion saved from frugal efforts by cutting things like conference costs to office supplies and travel. In 2010, the Simpson Bowles National Commission to reform government Dan Alexander brought forth a plan that Thoughts from was not acted upon. I Behind the Pressline would instruct the heads of our 22 civilian and military departments to look at those recommendations and surgically trim their expenditure, not to include any staff reductions, but to trim 2 percent from other expenses, which should save about $48 billion. Over the years, we’ve repeatedly piled programs on top of pre-existing ones. We should begin today to identify these programs with an estimated goal of cutting $25 billion through the elimination of and merging of certain agencies. We must put Social Security and Medicare at the top of our lists to ensure their sustainability while reducing costs. Last year, more than two dozen Fortune 500 companies paid zero federal income tax, short changing the country by $20 billion. We must put an end to corporate welfare and preferential tax deals. Every American over age 18 must have a financial stake in our country, and I would propose a minimum citizen tax of $250 or about $4.80 a week. For each person over 18 years of age, if you’ve paid nothing into the system, the government will deduct $250 from your refund (benefit) check. That will raise $28 billion. With all Americans citizens and corporations now having a vested interest in our country, we can create a new culture to rein in costs and once again create a promising opportunity to the future generations. www.the-burgh.com - 5 iron wine racks, stained glass lamps, knitted hats and one of a kind gifts are all displayed under serene lighting and on locally purchased furnishings. ARC clients have amazing talent; baskets, quilts and natural bark window boxes are finely crafted and fly out the door. To add to the community partnership; Loose Threads donates much of the fabric for quilts and table runners.

ave you recently done a double take when driving past the “MADE BY ME GIFT SHOP” sign on Tom Miller Road? And thought, wait, what is that? I’ve never seen that before. Well next time you do drive by…stop in, look around and be amazed at what the Advocacy and Resource Center has put together; a wonderful community arts partnership gift shop! Through the ultimate Plattsburgh grapevine, we heard about the shop and stopped in to talk with Theresa Garrow, ARC Executive Director, and Jared Whiteman, a culinary employee at Westside Ballroom and an art enthusiast/customer service associate, at MADE BY ME GIFT SHOP. Gracious, welcoming and excited, Theresa and Jared showed us around the former home turned into a lovely shop. The shop was originally purchased with the intention of turning it into a residential living facility to serve their developmentally disabled consumers, and finding that the budget wouldn’t allow for this plan…they got to brainstorming. With so many artists on staff, and so many talented clients, the idea of a local artist shop began to build and take shape. Shopping at MADE BY ME has an art gallery feel with excellent commentary by staff about who made the art, what inspires that artist, and what materials they use. Gifts and art range from African carvings, inspired by an artist who spent a few years doing mission work in Africa, to large weathered glass votive candle holders created from Lake Champlain beach glass. Jewelry, framed photos, oil paintings, wrought

The gift shop, begun in November 2012, has done extremely well, with their best advertising through word of mouth. The philosophy of MADE BY ME is to support, nurture, and showcase local artists. Driven by this philosophy, Theresa and staff are careful about having a large group of artists and craftsman on hand to add to the variety of art available for viewing and purchase. Most of the artists take special orders and the displays and products change frequently. Knowing the story behind the artist and purchasing locally are other reasons to give a gift or add to your own décor from MADE BY ME GIFT SHOP. Free gift wrapping makes it even easier! OUR RECOMMENDATIONS: Bring a friend and stop in to browse and get acquainted with the beauty and talent of local artists, you will surely have someone come to mind who would love something from MADE BY ME. Talk to the staff there; it adds the flavor that we all desire in the shopping process. You’ll have some stories to tell about your gifts! If you are an artist, talk to Theresa (563-0930 x124) at her New York Road office about what you craft and make an appointment to show her your art! Help sponsor the ARCs growth and development by buying tickets and attending their upcoming fund raisers; Fiddles, Vittles and Ales on March 16 which features beer tasting and Celtic music and Hot Jazz on a Cool Night in April. Having fun, buying great gifts and supporting our community are great ways to celebrate “Scene in Plattsburgh!”

Plattsburgh Housing Outlet announces Home Building Seminar PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh Housing Outlet, Inc. has developed a home building workshop to educate the community. Plattsburgh Housing Outlet will sponsor a Home Building Seminar on Thursday, March 21 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Dino’s Pizza, 795 Route 3, (formerly Broadview Deli, next to Wilson Appliance)

Girls Night from page 1 said. “We are fortunate to have fitness instructors from SUNY Plattsburgh. Most everyone here is a volunteer or were sponsored through grants or by Excellus and Sam’s Club.” The event was led by keynote speaker Heather VanArsdel, a reporter for Channel 5 News, who said self-confidence and motivation encouraged her to progress from the girl who didn’t make the cheerleading squad in high school to becoming a part of the Knicks City Dancers. She now owns her own dance studio in Plattsburgh and has a career in broadcast journalism. The school was filled with various activities. There were many fun, team building exercises and there were more serious topics of discussion, like understanding the winter blues, keepers of the drum, developing your inner and outer strengths with physical therapy, writing journals, poetry and more. Members of STOP Domestic Violence held a program talking about teen dating, positive relationships and friend ships.

in Plattsburgh. The seminar will offer guidance on topics such as: lender requirements, manufactured and modular homes, advice on finding and developing your building site, and time frames for home building. “These girls are at a very vulnerable age and now more then ever with text messaging and Facebook and the availability of constant contact,” said Michelle Liberty with STOP Domestic Violence. “It’s important they learn about healthy and unhealthy relationships, they might not be dating but it’s also about healthy friendships.” Other programs included a text simulator provided by the Clinton County Sherriff Department where girls too young to drive were able to try to drive in a video simulator while text messaging. Students from CV-TEC’s cosmetic program also was there to give makeovers, give hair cuts and style hair. Educational workshops ranged from making chocolate delights or grab and go snacks to making buttons and jewelry. The girls were able to get their hearts racing with action-packed workshops including zumba, yoga, dancing, kick boxing, belly dancing, and the fitness room. “We were happy to see so many were able to come and glad we could get the different schools together,” Moore said. “We hope to expand the program in the future.”

Experts from all areas of construction and banking will give an overview of the process and participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions during the second hour. Dinner will be served during the event and there is no cost or obligation for this service. Participants must RSVP ahead of time as space is limited. Adults only please. Anyone interested in attending may call 800-794-6250 by March 19, or email michelle@plattsburghhousing.com with their name, phone number, and number in their party. Participants will receive a free “how-to” packet, a copy of their credit report and a discount coupon for attending the seminar. They will leave with the information they will need to make an informed decision about new construction and home ownership. One of the participants wrote the following on their survey, “very truthful and to the point.” All are welcome regardless of when they plan to build a home. Plattsburgh Housing Outlet has been providing North Country Families with quality, affordable homes since 1991. They were named Retailer of the Year by the Manufactured Housing Institute for the Northeast/ Mid-atlantic region in 2003, one of four companies in the nation. ROTA member Jeremy Colwell has been making art since he can remember, and his pieces reflect a variety of tones, some serious, some bright and whimsical. One piece, a drawing surrounding a single piece of brown felt laid behind a hole in the paper, is representative of the different perspectives present in his work. “This one took me a long time to finish,” Colwell said, pointing to the drawing. “The entire thing started off as scratches and scribbles on the paper, and then I would go in and fill in the shapes.” Colwell explained that the finished product, which took a year to complete, is like a diary, with each form representing a period in his life. The same can be said for his other paintings, which all seem to draw from moments in his life. “ROTA has been a really good place for me,” Colwell said. “I used to be a lot quieter, and more hidden in my shell. It’s helped me become more social.” The philosophy of bringing people together to create a strong sense of culture and community is an intrinsic part of what ROTA strives to do for the North Country. Part of that culture, the familiarity of the interior of some of Plattsburgh’s oldest downtown buildings, is captured in ROTA member Jess Rigby’s photography. Rigby uses long exposure times—20 to 30 seconds—to reproduce the deep reds and long shadows that inhabit many

Rigby also likes to place herself in some of her work. “I like that the slow shutter gets the natural light in the room without using a flash,” Rigby said. “I don’t look for anything in particular when I photograph, I just know it when I see it.” Beneath Rigby’s photographs is a small, white, wooden stand with four silver objects placed on top of it. The objects are cameras, but only in shape and size. They are cast iron sculptures, poured by Kaitlyn Donovan, gallery coordinator for ROTA. The process of creating an iron counterpart of a camera is a time consuming affair, and also requires a small team of people to complete. First, Donovan covered the camera with silicon caulking to make a mold. After removing the camera, she filled the silicon with casting wax, which gave her a wax replica of the camera. Next, she needed to create a mold that Kaitlyn Donovan, gallery coordinator for ROTA, explained the long process of creating iron could hold hot, melted iron. Eve Ticknor: water through a lens By Shaun Kittle

Keela Grimmette, founder and executive director of Reason 2 Smile, with Reagan, a student who lives at Jambo Jipya Children's Home and attends Jambo Jipya School in Mtwapa, Kenya. Photo provided

A Reason 2 Smile from page 1 poverty,” Pepe said. “There were little kids walking miles and miles to get water they had to strain the mud out of for their families.” That was almost 10 years ago. Today, Pepe is a senior at Keene Central School. When it came time for Pepe to do her senior legacy project—a project that gets students to leave a legacy by helping others—her thoughts went back to Nairobi. She remembered a presentation Keela Grimmette, founder and executive director of Reason 2 Smile in Lake Placid, gave at her school a couple years ago. Pepe learned that the non-profit organization focuses on helping kids in developing countries, specifically orphaned and at-risk children. So she contacted Grimmette, and devised a way to help. On Sunday, March 17, from 2 to 6 p.m., January Jams will return

to the Upper Jay Arts Center, but this time, it’s for a cause. There is a $5 suggested donation, with all proceeds going toward Reason 2 Smile. Musicians of all skill levels can sign up and perform and, halfway through the event, Grimmette will give a presentation to explain what Reason 2 Smile is all about. “I think in order to appreciate what you do have, it’s important to see what other people don’t have,” Pepe said. “Even if people can’t give much money, I think it would be good to see her presentation anyway, just to know.” Grimmette started Reason 2 Smile in 2007, shortly after volunteering at Jambo Jipya school in Mtwapa, a fishing village located in Kenya, Africa. Like Pepe, the experience left her with memories that inspired her to take action. “She (Pepe) has a real personal connection to that country,” Grimmette said. “She said she was very excited to soak things up, which was interesting for me to hear—for a kid that young to have experiences like that.” In Kenya there are free public schools, but children must have a school uniform and books to attend, requirements many families simply cannot afford. A Kenyan woman named Christine Mwende began helping local families send their children to school, but soon realized that she could help a lot more people by opening her own school. In 2004, Jambo Jipya was created. The school provides everything for the kids—school uniform, shoes, supplies, two meals a day and health care. Grimmette taught first graders there for 10 weeks in 2007, and realized that the school would have to close if it didn’t start receiving some funding. “The biggest thing was, I developed a really close relationship with the kids in a very short period of time,” Grimmette said.

There was broken glass everywhere. “If I could know it was just this family living like this, maybe I could wrap my head around it and move on,” Grimmette said. “But I know it’s not. As I’m driving I’m seeing more mud huts and little kids with hardly any clothes in, walking in bare feet, and I know this is happening to hundreds and thousands of kids.” Grimmette couldn’t just walk away. She now does a lot of presentations, telling stories and showing videos and photographs to show others the conditions she witnessed first hand. She encourages people to help others through Reason 2 Smile and informs them that, for $18 a month, they can cover all associated costs of education—food, health care, clothing and two meals a day—for a child. The organization recently began helping another school in Nairobi, too, and also provides aid to an orphanage. Once a year, Grimmette visits Africa to meet with the students and their teachers, and once a year she receives letters from the children whose lives she’s impacting. “They realize that every little thing that is given to them is because someone else cares about them,” Grimmette said. Looking forward, Grimmette also said there will be a World Music Festival at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts on May 4 to benefit Reason 2 Smile. The all-ages event will include workshops, a Kenyan marketplace, and different kinds of dance and music from all over the world, including clogging, Irish step dance, zumba, African drumming and Yoga. The UVM Topcats, an all-male acappella group, and the reggae band Robanic, from Saratoga Springs, will also perform. For more information, visit reason2smile.org

Giuseppe’s Pizza Shop shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — When some people visit the North Country, they can’t help but stay. For some it’s the natural beauty—the aqueous expanse of Lake Champlain or the jagged silhouette of distant mountains—that keeps them here; for others it’s the people in the community. For Silvio Amaya, owner of Giuseppe’s Pizza Shop in Consumer Square in Plattsburgh, it was both of those things. After growing up in El Salvador, Central America, Amaya moved to Washington D.C., where he worked at his first pizzeria. He liked the job, and after his company sent him to work at a store in Plattsburgh for a couple of months, Amaya decided to stay. “By the time I got here (to Plattsburgh), I had it in my mind that that’s what I wanted to do,” Amaya said. He found something here that reminded him of his childhood, and saw a future for himself in the small, northern city. “Families are close over there, but I see that here, too,” Amaya said. “Plattsburgh is a nice place to grow a family.”

That was back in 1996, and in the nearly 20 years that followed, Giuseppe’s has never changed locations. Business there has been steady, something Amaya attributes to the quality of the food. “We make everything homemade,” Amaya said. “Making the dough fresh daily makes a huge difference. The crust is so much better.” The pizza sauce, and Amaya’s chicken wing sauce, are also made fresh at the store. The sauce recipes are top-secret, but Amaya said they represent years of working in pizzerias, cobbling together elements of other recipes he liked. Today, pizza and wings are some of his top sellers, but Giuseppe’s also serves pasta dishes, calzones, salads, wraps, steaks and burgers. The important thing, he said, is to add items to the menu that people might not have tried before, like chicken brunello, an entree consisting of diced chicken in a tomato, cream and Marsala sauce served over ziti. And Amaya is not a stranger to trying something new—he recently joined forces with Peter Kritziotis to open Aleka’s in downtown Plattsburgh on Feb. 9. The restaurant combines Greek and Italian

food—the best of both Amaya’s and Kritziotis’ worlds—under one roof. The menu is a bit different from Giuseppe’s, but both restaurants will make

accommodations for their guests. “If you don’t see something on the menu and want us to try and make it, we will,” Amaya said.
