After significant discussion, the board approved a measure that will pay between $45,000 to $55,000 for the job, but could pay more if a highly qualified candidate is found. But even with the pay increase, Essex Supervisor Ron Jackson still has his doubts. “I just don’t know if we will be able to get what we want for $55,000,” Jackson said.
TICONDEROGA — Cartop boat enthusiasts now have a new way to access the Queen of American Lakes thanks to a new hand launch opened adjacent to Black Point Beach. The launch was the brainchild of David Pahl — a summer resident of The Portage and avid kayaker who brought the idea last summer to the Ti Parks and Recreation Department. “This type of access is really a win for everyone involved,” Pahl said last week from his home in Schenectady. “It’s low impact, carries no liability issues and

The only rules are no motors, no trailers or vehicles on the beach, and no parking in the launching area. Pahl said he brought the idea forth last summer to coordinate it with the revitalization of the beach and said it was unanimously approved by the Ti town board last fall. “The board was just great to deal with,” Pahl said. “They were very receptive to the idea and after a little research approved it unanimously.”

TICONDEROGA — The 9th annual Jeff Wyand Miracle Ride, a motorcycle ride to benefit Fletcher Allen Health Care’s Vermont Children’s Hospital in Burlington, will travel a new route this year. The ride, which has traditionally begun in Rouses Point, will begin this year at the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 1134 Wicker St., next Sunday, Aug. 16. Registration for the ride will be held from 9-11:30 a.m., with the ride to immediately follow. The parade-style route will leave the Wal-Mart parking lot, taking State Routes 9N and 22 to Westport and Elizabethtown, continuing on Route 9N to Keeseville. The ride will continue on Route 9N to Bear Swamp Road in Peru, taking State Route 22 to State Route 22B through Schuyler Falls and Morrisonville. The route will then continue on State Route 3 through Plattsburgh to Broad Street. The ride will conclude by turning onto Peru Street, following Bridge Street to Dock Street, where it will end at the

Naked Turtle. There, a traditional barbecue celebration will be held. This year ’s event will see the return of the ride’s “poker crawl.” Anyone who pays an additional amount to enter the crawl will be able to pick up playing cards at three different locations along the route, receiving a total of five cards in all. When the ride ends, each participant is checked to see who has the best poker hand. First through third prizes — and a consolation prize for the player with the bust hand — will be awarded. In the event of a tie, a blind raffle will be held to determine the winner. The poker crawl is similar to a traditional poker run, though in that scenario, riders traditionally split up to get their cards as quick as
possible. The crawl encourages riders to stick together, in order to maintain the stirring image of hundreds of bikers riding in unison. The Jeff Wyand Miracle Ride began in 2005, then known as “Biking for Miracles.” The ride was established by Tom Wyand of Plattsburgh, in honor of his son, Jeff, who was battling pediatric cancer at the time. Jeff Wyand succumbed to his cancer in November 2006, at the age of 18. The ride was then named in his memory. For more information, visit www.jeffwyandride.org. Donations may also be made on the Web site or by mailing them to Fletcher Allen Health Care Development Office, 111 Colchester Ave., Burlington V.T. 05401.
Cartopper From page 1 Ticonderoga Supervisor Bob Dedrick said the board saw the idea for the launch as a great service to both residents and visitors with no impact on beachgoers. “We were totally in favor of granting these people access,” Dedrick said. “Otherwise they would have to travel down to the Mossy Point Launch to get on the lake.” Now the launch is open, Pahl said he’d like to get the word out it is there and available for public use. “Although only a few people know about this so far, I think it offers a great alternative for public access to this beautiful part of the lake,” Pahl said. “The newly-revitalized beach is a beautiful asset to the town and this launch area makes it even more appealing.” Next, Pahl said he will turn his attention toward getting a similar launch opened in nearby Bolton Landing. “To my knowledge, they currently have no sort of access like this, so I’d like to see something opened there as well,” Pahl said.

education of an applicant. Supervisors said they would like an experienced engineer and that paying a little more in salary will save cash in the long run because more work could be accomplished inhouse. The county is seeking a replacement for longtime Assistant Civil Engineer Lenny Zelkowitz, who is set to retire in September. Essex County Manager Dan Palmer noted that due to the amended approval of the pay scale adjustment, a planned training period for the new hire may not happen. Because of the open-ended nature of the pay scale, any potential hire over $55,000 would have to return to the full board for approval.

Montcalm Streetfest organizers anticipate big turnout Aug. 15 TICONDEROGA — Sue Rathbun, Chair of the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, said early this week, “Streetfest on Saturday Aug. 15 will be great.” The committee working on the project, which includes Sandie Bolton, Chattie Van Wert, Deb Malaney, John Reale, Art Hatfield, Joe Conway, Diane Farinick, Pam Nolan, Donna, Van Wirt, Rolly Allen, Mark Johns, and Sue Rathbun, indicates that there are now commitments from vendors, crafters and local businesses, restaurants, vintage car owners, Hacker Boat, the Ticonderoga Police, Fire and EMS departments, Wicker Ford, Christopher Chevrolet, Penelope the Clown, and many others to participate in the event. “As previously announced, Montcalm Street will be closed from the Sunshine Laundry to Glens Falls National Bank at 8 am to allow for setup and the event will kick off at 10 am. A complete list of participating local businesses, crafters, car owners and the location of each participant and display will be available to visitors as they enter the closed portion of Montcalm Street. “We haven’t had an event like this in downtown Ticonderoga in years,” said Rathbun. “We are looking forward to welcoming people from the whole area, Essex, Warren, and Washington Counties of New York and all our friends across the Lake in Vermont. It will be a great day, and if it rains, we’ll do it on Aug. 22.”

6 - TIMES OF TI • OPINION
SATURDAY August 8, 2009
Dedrick offers reward To the Times of Ti: As Supervisor I have always strived to make our Community a place that prides itself in our appearance and with the help of my Board and Town committees, the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, and working in close partnership with many organizations, I feel we have successfully provided many attractions that have enhanced the aesthetic beauty of our Town, making our Town much more attractive and pleasing to the beholder. Never once did I listen to the critics who expressed the opinion that when you add a thing of beauty, or an object for the benefit of the Community, there is no sense in doing it because it will be vandalized. In my eyes that attitude would be shameful because all you do is subjugate ourselves to the vandals and the Community loses. I would rather focus on making our Town a better place to live and catch the vandals and fully prosecute. This past summer I have seen some destruction to our newly placed gazebo, purchased partly by the Kiwanis Club. Damage was done, the vandal prosecuted and the message got out. But now our beautiful flower box on our Montcalm Street Bridge has been torn from its foundation and dumped into the LaChute River. Such wanton, malicious destruction defies ones mind to reason. Those boxes were placed there by the Kiwanis Club, the flowers were purchased by the Chamber of Commerce and the staff at the Country Florist watered and pampered those flowers daily. Yet in one malicious act all that was done was laid to waste. Again, I refuse to submit to criminals. I am personally offering a $100 reward to anyone who helps the police arrest and convict these offenders. Our Community needs to become more vigilant and report anyone you notice doing any destruction. Only than will we win. Robert Dedrick Ticonderoga

Morals on decline To the Times of Ti: As a taxpayer in Crown Point, I am watching the continued decline of our economy, our landscape, and our morale. The elected officials have become complacent, arrogant, and many people feel as though they are being held hostage here. Elected officials have been in office for 14 plus years and some, since the 1970s. Why do we keep electing them? It is time for a change and this year is the year to get new ideas, new people, and a fresh start in Crown Point. We have an excellent candidate for supervisor, four new people challenging the seats or town council, and one person running for highways superintendent. It’s high time we have someone else a chance. These positions are not meant to be lifetime appointments and if the majority of Crown Pointer ’s think they are, then it is time to vote in term limits. Term limits keep people honest and Crown Point needs honesty in its government. We need people who are willing to fulfill their commitment on the job, not be paid to work at home. I am supporting Corey Armstrong for highway superintendent this year. He worked as foreman at the highway department for over 17 years and he is a mechanic who can fix the trucks and equipment when they need repair. He is an honest man with excellent work ethics and I guarantee he will be working alongside his men on the roads. He won’t abuse the system and he will work everyday that the men work- all day. It is time to give someone new a chance and break up the cronyism. Please vote for change in Crown Point this year. it is not about keeping friends in office- it is about change and I think this years’ candidates offer just that- positive change. Let us save Crown Point from further decline. Ray Meachem Crown Point
Moriah PTA reaches $5,000 goal To the Times of Ti: Recently, the Moriah Central School PTA participated in a Matching Gift Program with Stewart’s Shop in Port Henry. Stewart’s agreed to match up to $5,000 collected in donations made toward the PTA’s Playground Fund over a two week period. I’m pleased to announce that we not only met that $5,000 goal, but we exceeded it by a little over $500. This fund-raiser would not have been possible without the help and commitment of many. Thank you foremost to PTA member Shelly Winters for applying to Stewart’s for our participation in this program. Within the Port Henry Stewart’s Shop I would like to thank manager Kellie Valentine and Sue Zelinski for their work in organizing the many events that took place during the fund-raiser. Thank you also to the Stewart’s employees for everything you did to help. To the school organizations, classes and teachers that took time after school to pump gas for donations, we appreciate your time and we thank you. We appreciate the participation of the Essex County Sheriff ’s Department, the Vermont National Guard, RSVP, Cornell Co-operative Extension, the Moriah and Port Henry fire departments, Moriah Ambulance Squad, Moses Ludington Hospital, Essex County Office of the Aging, Stop Domestic Violence and the Loose Connections Band. Thanks also to those that organized, donated to, baked and worked the bake sale and tag sale. To the Stewart’s “regulars” that helped to roll coins, we appreciate your assistance. Once again we find ourselves expressing gratitude to Laura Muniz/George’s Restaurant and Cathie Sprague/Penelope for donating their time and/or services to our organization. Thank you to John Boyea/Boyea’s Grocery & Deli for making a generous monetary donation even after he found out we had reached our goal. My last thank you goes out to everyone who made a donation. Thank you all for your generosity. We live in a great community, there’s no doubt about that. When something needs to be done, everyone pulls together and it gets done. To me, that’s what makes this place so special! Our new Boundless Playground is expected to be installed in or around September for everyone to enjoy. If I left anyone out, I certainly did so in error and I sincerely apologize. Rose M. Rice Moriah Central School PTA Secretary

Readers Write: Stockpiling and Internet Fraud
I
t's time to answer some questions from readers like you who are learning to Super-Coupon: Q: I read your column about stockpiling groceries that you find on sale. How much do I need to buy at one time of something to stockpile it? I'm not comfortable doing bulk buying. A: "Stockpiling" is a term that many coupon enthusiasts use to refer to the practice of buying ahead of schedule. When we stockpile, we attempt to beat the stores at their own pricing games by buying enough of an item to sustain our household's needs until the next time that item goes on sale. It doesn't necessarily refer to bulk buying but rather just buying more than you immediately need. If an item is nonperishable or has a long shelf life, buy as many of that item as you have coupons for. Add them to your stockpile, and use them over the next few weeks instead of running to the store for that item. Here's an example. If pasta sauce is on sale for $1.29, and I have six 75-cent coupons, I will buy six jars of sauce and pay just 54 cents a jar. While
my immediate needs for this week's meal would only include one jar, the price of the pasta sauce will likely be back up to $2.99 next week. When I decide to make pasta again, I can go down to my pantry and get another jar, which I bought at 54 cents. I don't need to go to the grocery store and pay full price, because I bought a little more than I needed last week when it was on sale. When you think about doing this on a larger scale with everything we buy, it's easy to see how we can save in the long term. It's not bulk buying so much as it is buying just a little more than we need in the short term. You will become comfortable with "shopping at home" for those items from your own pantry versus running to the store and paying that higher price. Stockpiling teaches you to shop on a price-based basis versus a needs-based basis. Q: One of my local grocery stores will not accept Internet coupons. Why wouldn't a store take them? Should I be wary of using them? A: While most stores accept Internet coupons, it's true that some do not. Counterfeit
coupons have always been a problem for stores. With the advent of the Internet, new problems have arisen, especially when counterfeiters make realistic-looking coupons and post them online. If many people print and redeem the fake coupons, stores lose money because they cannot redeem the fakes with the manufacturer. To avoid these issues, some stores have issued a blanket No Internet Coupons policy. Do you need to be afraid of using Internet coupons? Not at all. There are hundreds of legitimate coupons available on the Internet every day. To know whether or not an Internet coupon is legitimate, look to see where the coupon originates. If it is posted on a manufacturer or store Web site, it's legitimate and perfectly fine to use. If it is posted on someone's personal site or a filesharing site, you have no way to verify its origin, so you shouldn't use it. If you're looking on manufacturers' sites for coupons in the first place, you won't come across any coupons that are fraudulent. It's important to note, too, that you cannot make a photocopy of a coupon that you
Curious portrayals of men today
A
t the risk of dating myself, I grew up watching television shows like Father Knows Best, the Walton’s, Leave it to Beaver, the Andy Griffin Show, Happy Days, the Beverly Hillbilly’s, Green Acres and the Brady Bunch. In most of these shows, father was portrayed as wise, unselfish, courageous, rational and largely unflappable. Granted, Oliver Douglas, the lead character from Green Acres was sometimes portrayed as a self important gas bag and Jed Clammpet the lead male, character from the Beverly Hillbillies was sometimes guilty of an utterly implausible naiveté. Mike Brady, the father from the Brady Bunch not only always knew exactly what to do and say to his wife and children; he delivered his always enlightened words with the soothing and modulated cadence of an empathetic psychotherapist. Mr. Brady’s knowledge was so broad that once, when the family visited the Grand Canyon, he was able to tell the children about the rich traditions of the Hopi Indians of the area in a way that would have put a tour guide to shame. Contrast these portrayals of men as wise and rational with the male characters of King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond or Home Improvement, to mention just a few. Tim, the lead character from Home Improvement is largely a self indulgent buffoon. He has little to offer his wife or children in the way of family leadership. In fact, Tim is often rescued by his wife and children. Tim is helplessly bereft most of the time while he attempts to express himself as a self described “macho man.” Raymond, the male lead in Everybody Loves Raymond comes closer to being any ordinary person, albeit a “child-like” adult. Raymond spends much of his time trying to figure out his marriage and more specifically his high performance wife. Raymond’s parents are ever present in his life and persistently insert themselves in ways
that certainly undermines him and, not coincidently, his marriage. Raymond has no insight into this obvious and destructive intrusion by his parents. By Scot Hurlburt One consistent theme in these humorous sitcoms is the role of the wife. The wife in each of these shows is a highly capable, attractive and intelligent woman who must act the long suffering woman who leads her clueless husband around by the nose. The men in these shows seem to mess up just about everything, even the most elementary problem is too much for them. While certain stereotypes from the past needed correcting, such as those foisted upon women, depicting men as fools in the process seems a bit curious to me. I’m not sure what this cultural shift means for men and maybe these portrayals are part of a necessary, if not understood by me, evolution in cultural norms. Additionally, I wonder what effect these depictions are having on young people. Do they see their fathers as the feckless twits they seem to be on so many contemporary sitcoms? I wonder what John Walton would have said about men being portrayed as fools in popular culture? I suspect that he would have shook his head, said goodnight to John Boy and went to bed, just as I am about to do. Remember, all kids count.

printed from the Internet, a common misconception among new coupon users. Some people assume that because it printed from their printer they can copy it and make as many as they would like. But can you copy a dollar bill? No. And you can't copy a coupon, either. Internet coupons have unique serial numbers and bar codes. While you might get away with passing photocopies at your store, your store will ultimately pay the price when they go to redeem them, since they'll only get credit for one coupon with that serial number. © CTW Features Jill Cataldo, a coupon-workshop instructor, writer and mother of three, never passes up a good deal. 8 - TIMES OF TI • CROWN POINT
Heritage Sunday service to be observed in Crown Point CROWN POINT — On Sunday, Aug. 16, at 9:30 a.m., almost 190 years from the time that The Reverend S.L. Herrick, Pastor of The First Congregational Church of Crown Point, began holding Services in a rural portion of the community known as Ironville, current members and the Pastor of First Congregational Church, Crown Point, will join with the Penfield Historical Society and all those in attendance, in a Heritage Day Service at the old Second Congregational Church Meeting House. This special Service will bring together friends and families from the area. It will serve as a bridge from the days before electricity and electric organs to this time of computers and microchips. Led by Pastor David Hirtle and Pastor Gregg Trask, of the First Congregational Church, Crown Point, the Service will recall hymns (played on the historic “pump” organ by Patricia Knapp), scriptures, prayers, anecdotal information and Messages for both children and the young at heart. All of this will join not only tradition but the hearts of faith that sustained those original worshippers and still is relevant to this day. The Pastors have issued a challenge on this particular Sunday. The friends and members of the Parish are to attempt to “pack a pew” with their own friends and family much as would have been done in the ear-
ly days of worship here in the greater Crown Point area. The church records show that at a Special Meeting of the Congregational Society, in 1846, “The Second Congregational Church of Crown Point,” was formed. Congregationalism, inheritors of the free spirit of the Separatists that left England aboard a tiny vessel called “The Mayflower” in 1620, came together as a Christian community to build a church home where all would feel welcome, where all had a voice in the path they believed God was directing them. The faith of those early settlers, carved out of the wilderness of the Adirondacks, a church building in 1845 and Dedicated in October of that year. The building cost $1,600 and boasted a basement used for the education of it’s members and the community. It was a focal point of that small, growing community. It provided not only a place of Worship, but a communal center for meetings, times of joy and of loss, and great struggle during the early days of this area. Don’t miss the opportunity on Sunday, Aug. 16, 9:30 a.m., to join in the continuation of History as, once again, the free and never ending spirit of this ancient community known as The Second Congregational Church rejoices in the blessings of our present day.

The buildings and the displays within are rich with original furnishings, pictures, and textiles instantly transporting visitors back to the Federal and Victorian eras The museum offers displays of daily life at the homestead to include; Penfield’ s office, the family parlor, bedrooms, and the kitchens. The main kitchen featuring the original brick fireplace with bake oven, and the summer kitchen has an authentic icebox, cook stove and various cooking implements. Off the summer kitchen, in what was the woodshed, houses the displays for the iron works and vintage tools. The museum has a community room where visitors may view artifacts donated from local families through out the community, to include photographs by Seneca Ray Stoddard. The pride and joy of the museum is the civil war room where stories are told of local men who fought in the war and of their horses, one of which is buried at the homestead with a headstone listing the battles both horse and rider experienced. The Harwood Homestead B&B is next door to the Penfield homestead. This house was originally built for Penfield’s son-in-law, although it is not part of the museum, it is as rich in history. For more information call 597-3429. The parsonage for the church is now the museum business office, and the research/genealogy library. All proceeds of Heritage Day go to the museum and its research efforts. For more information visit the Penfield museum website at www.penfieldmuseum.org or call 597-3804.

gust of 1759. The limestone ruins of both the French-built fort and of the earthen walls and stone barracks of the British fort, located on a point of land that juts into Lake Champlain, still offer an inspiring location that has remained largely unchanged since a devastating fire burned the British fort in 1773, only two years before the start of the Revolutionary War. The ruins are among the very few remaining examples of pre-Revolutionary military construction in the United States and both fort ruins have been designated as registered “National Historic Landmarks” by the U.S. Department of the Interior, noting that the “Crown Point fort, in its ruined but unaltered state, is probably the finest existing architectural and archeological type specimen of a superior example of 18th century military engineering anywhere in the United States.” In 1734, Chaussegros de Lery, the king’s engineer in New France, completed drawings for Fort St. Frédéric and 1734 was the year that construction began on Fort St. Frédéric, the towering stone fortification at Crown Point. The year 2009 marks the 275th anniversary those 1734 accomplishments. Of course mid-summer 2009 is the 250th anniversary of the major French and Indian War events of 1759 here. Locally, the French, when outnumbered on Lake Champlain by an advancing British force of 12,000 men, withdrew from Lake Champlain to defend Montréal. The French civilian

CROWN POINT — Crown Point State Historic Site on Lake Champlain will host a 250th anniversary British, French, and Indian war encampment as a public event on the weekend of Aug. 8 – 9. A new museum exhibit and dramatic new audio-visual show, open 9:30 a.m. – 5p.m. on both days, are especially interesting and informative parts of the visitor experience. Although there were no huge battles, only skirmishes, fought at Crown Point in the 1700s, four tactical weapons demonstrations are scheduled for the public to view during the encampment weekend, the “battles” taking place between 10 and 10:30 a.m. and between 1:30 and 2 p.m. on both Saturday and on Sunday. The re-enactors are expected to break camp at 3 on Sunday afternoon. Guests will be able to see, hear, walk among, and interact with the many volunteers who will spend the weekend portraying the various people of Crown Point in the summer of 1759. Guests will want to bring a camera. “Sutlers,” (vendors) will show and sell their replica 18th century wares all weekend, rain or shine. “Champ’s Trading Post” staff will cook on-site, selling sandwich lunches to guests. “Crown Point Bread Company” will sell gourmet baked goods and pizza inside a festive tent. Crown Point offers a unique backdrop for the event, both geographically and historically. Before 1734, Woodland Indians camped on the peninsula. In 1734, the French military built an impressive stronghold here, Fort St. Frédéric, with its tall limestone tower and even a fortified wind-mill. A quarter-century later, when the British arrived, they added an even larger fortress at Crown Point, starting in early Au-
population at Crown Point was evacuated. The French military blew up their tower redoubt and their fortified grist mill at Crown Point and departed that strategic location on what happened to be the 150th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s July 30, 1609 battle that was fought “at the extremity of a cape which extends into the lake on the western bank.” The British took possession of the Crown Point area only days later on August 4, 1759. In an effort to secure the British hold on the Champlain Valley, British General Amherst ordered the immediate 1) construction of a fleet of military ships that included the sloop Boscawen, the brig Duke of Cumberland, the radeau Ligonier, and numerous bateaux, and 2) simultaneous construction of a vast British fort at Crown Point that mounted 104 cannon and was designed to accommodate 4,000 men and which included extensive new outer works (including three redoubts and three blockhouses) and 3) construction of the 20’ wide, 77-mile-long 1759 “Crown Point Road,” which crossed the Green Mountains to provide and overland connection between Crown Point and the Connecticut River. For more information about the site, the public may contact Crown Point State Historic Site at 518-597-4666 or at 21 Grandview Drive, Crown Point NY 12928; and for more information about State Parks and Historic Sites, please visit the agency’s web site at www.nysparks.com.

Enjoy Silver Bay for free
Service planned in Putnam
SILVER BAY — Silver Bay is welcoming area residents to enjoy its campus free of charge Aug. 8, during its yearly Community Day. Residents are welcome for a classic summer day of swimming, hiking, crafts and boating on 700 acres of woods and waterfront. Community Day coincides with the organization’s Annual Meeting, which is open to all members, guests & the community. Complimentary membership for the day entitles visitors to use all facilities and scheduled activities for the day. Guests are asked to pick up their complimentary membership badge at the Front Desk. Silver Bay will offer an outdoor barbeque lunch ($12/adults, $6/youth) from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. on the Auditorium green, or bring your own lunch and picnic on the water! The day will also feature music with the Ticonderoga Community Band. During lunch, Silver Bay will host a celebration of the Auditorium, a remarkable timber-frame building marking its 100th anniversary this year. The Annual Meeting, which begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Auditorium, will include an update on Silver Bay happenings, a chance to meet the new Executive Director, David Kisselback, and his wife, and a recognition of Silver Bay volunteers. All are welcome to attend.
PUTNAM — The Putnam United Presbyterian Church welcomes everyone to their 10:00 AM worship service. Rev. Pat Davies' sermon is titled "Building Up." Silke Huntington will be reading Ephesians 4:25-5:2 and from the gospel of John 6:41-51. A children's sermon is included, and the service will be followed by coffee hour in Fellowship Hall. The Deacons will meet thereafter. The Pastoral Search Committee will meet on Monday, Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jerry McKinney.

Sandy Morehouse, representing the Champions Club, presents Joshua Demarais with a $500 Scholarship toward college. Morehouse will be attending Castleton Collage in Vermont this fall. The Champions Club is made up of current and past club champions from the Ticonderoga golf course, as well as other interested individuals. It has been their goal to improve the golf course, honor good golfers, and promote future golfers with scholarships. Because they are not solely a scholarship club, they pass the actual cash to the Ticonderoga alumni to monitor and distribute at the appropriate time. Michael Hayes started the club a few years ago.

Worried or anxious? With economic troubles in the news every day, everyone worries. Anxiety disorders which include panic attacks and phobias, affect about 19 million American adults and millions of children. If you feel extremely worried or afraid much of the time, or often feel panicky, consider talking with your doctor. Anxiety can fill you with such obsessive thoughts or dread of ordinary activities that you cannot work. Anxiety disorders can be mild, moderate or severe, but overcoming them generally takes more than just “facing your fears”. Many people need help in dealing with these problems. People are ashamed to admit to phobias and persistent worries, which seem like signs of weakness. The good news is that many therapies can help to control anxiety and improve quality of life for sufferers. Medications can, in many cases, reduce or eliminate symptoms. Several types of psycho social therapy, especially cognitive-behavioral therapy, also help by teaching people positive thought and behavior patterns. (Taken from Caregiver Assistance Newsletter)
Eat healthy to delay agerelated muscular degeneration Approximately 10 million Americans suffer from Agerelated Macular Degeneration (AMD), a devastating eye disease and a leading cause of vision loss in people 65 years or older in theUS. Although there is no cure for AMD, recent studies show that eating foods rich in antioxidants such as lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids, beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc, may reduce the risk of AMD, or slow its progression in some people. So, what type of foods should you eat? * Most fruits and vegetables contain Vitamin C including oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, papaya, green peppers and tomatoes. * Vitamin E can be found in vegetable oils (safflower and corn oil), almonds, pecans, wheat germ and sunflower seeds. * For beta-carotene, try deep orange or yellow fruits and vegetables such as cantaloupe, mangos, apricots, peaches, sweet potatoes, and carrots. * Dark green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, collard greens, asparagus and spinach are the primary sources of lutein and zeaxanthin. * Good sources of zinc include beef, pork. Lamb, oysters, eggs, shellfish, milk, peanuts, whole grains and wheat germ. * Good sources of omega-3 fatty acids are leafy green vegetables, nuts, fish, and vegetable oils such as canola, soy, and especially flaxseed. SATURDAY August 8, 2009 hall to Rouses Point and inland from Saranac Lake to Old Forge. Imagine the scene, as college scouts gather at the Northern New York High School Bass Weigh-In with promises of scholarships for the Finalists. Anything’s possible. Maybe kids won’t have to skip school to go fishing in the future and maybe flippin’ sticks will replace lacrosse sticks in gym class. Once you get over the unlikely prospect of a student lettering in bass fishing or getting a scholarship to fish for some Division I school, consider this: Bass fishing already has become a recognized high school activity in Illinois. And a group of fishermen in the bass-rich Ozarks are pushing for the sport to gain the same status in Missouri. “I know I would have had more interest in school if there had been a bass fishing team,” said John Neporadny of Lake Ozark, Mo., a nationally known outdoors writer. “This has the potential to bring in a whole new group of kids who hadn't been involved in sports before.” The concept already has been endorsed in Illinois, the first state to offer bass fishing as a state-sanctioned highschool activity. This spring, 214 of the 775 Illinois high schools will compete in a tournament series to determine a state champion.

nthony was small for his age and although he was a good athlete, by the time he got to high school he couldn’t run as fast, jump as high, or throw as hard as his classmates. After he transferred to a local prep school, he played varsity soccer for his fall sport but was unsure of what he would do in the spring. He didn’t have many alternatives, it was either golf or tennis. His father was a guest of mine and we had fished together for many years. Anthony had always accompanied him on the journeys north and by the time he was a teenager, Anthony was a proficient flyfisherman. As the spring semester approached, Anthony sought an alternative to the usual team sports. He looked into paddled sports, biking and trail running. I offered to help in any way I could. Finally, after consulting with the school’s athletic director, I agreed to serve as Anthony’s angling coach. Rather than play varsity golf or tennis, Anthony decided to take up flyfishing as his spring sport. He was the only athlete in the school to approach the playing field without wearing spikes or tennis whites. Anthony’s preparation involved tying flies, prepping his leaders and patching his waders before game day. The spring semester was consumed with outings on the Ausable, Boquet, Saranac and numerous local small streams. His opponents knew the playing field well, and they were wily, cunning and strong. Like a true sportsman, Anthony battled them in the spirit of fair play and

He kept exacting records of fish taken, insect hatches, water temperatures and water levels. His fishing log looked like a baseball scout’s tabulations. He left little to chance. With a wealth of natural resources available throughout the Adirondack region it’s a wonder that local schools don’t offer similar opportunities for non-traditional athletes. The trend has already started elsewhere in the country. The potential for student anglers to continue with the sport is also growing, as colleges continue to sponsor teams of Bass Anglers. For the past four years, the National Collegiate Bass Anglers Championships have attracted teams from many of the nation’s finest schools. As the nation’s top professional bass anglers continue to tout Lake Champlain’s amazing fishery, the potential to host local high school teams spans the region from White-
Outdoor travelers should take note of several recent announcements that will affect anglers, hunters, boaters and paddlers. Attention Adirondack Big Game Hunters: Rehabilitation work on the Raquette River Boat Launch, in the Town of Harrietstown, will begin this fall shortly after the September 11-13 running of Adirondack Canoe Classic race. The boat launch, also known as "The Crusher", will be closed for use throughout the Northern Zone Big Game Season. Hunters who plan to hunt lands around the river should seek alternate river access points such as Axton Landing on the Corey's Road. Saranac Lake Chain: Until futher notice, operation of the lower lock, between Second Pond and Oseetah Lake, is significantly limited due to problems with the lock's hydraulic system. The lock is closed every evening from 5:30 pm to 9 am the next morning. Operation of the lock will be by manual means only. Also the use of the lock is restricted to motorized vessels only - kayaks and canoes will be required to use the portage. The lock will be operated only at such times that there are enough vessels to fill the lock boats may expect delays up to one hour while awaiting the operation of the lock. Please plan accordingly.
