How occupational therapy can help people live with arthritis Occupational therapy may sound like something exclusive to people who are injured on the job. Though occupational therapy helps people in the workplace every day, it also helps men and women, including those with arthritis, perform everyday activities that may or may not be work-related. Arthritis can take both a physical and financial toll. The Arthritis Foundation notes that it’s difficult to determine just how many people currently suffer from arthritis, as treatment often isn’t sought until symptoms become severe. Conservative estimates from the AF suggest 54 million adults in the United States currently have arthritis, though the organization reports that a recent study suggested as many as 91 million might be dealing with this painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. As if the pain from arthri-

RSVP news and notes Recognition Luncheon coming to location near you By Kyle Miller GUEST W RITER

Bringing the Recognition Luncheon to You: As you may recall, we announced in February that this year’s RSVP Recognition Luncheon will be coming closer to where you live! Three of the four luncheon dates have been set and the first round of invitations have been mailed. RSVP Advisory Council Members are busy creating gift baskets and door prizes. The menus are being mapped out as we speak, and boy does it look good! Here are the dates so far, and remember, the invitation you receive in the mail will state which luncheon you are slated to attend. May 31 will be the Schroon Lake Senior Center luncheon. June 13 will be the Essex Reber meal site luncheon. June 28 will be the Ticonderoga Senior Center luncheon. The date for the final luncheon is yet to be set.

‘THANK YOU’

Those of you familiar with RSVP know that one of the perks of being a volunteer is the big to-do we throw every year, the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. This is RSVP’s opportunity to say “thank you” to our volunteers for all the good work that they do. We noticed that attendance at our 2018 luncheon was down a little bit, and after making some inquiries and listening to the input of our volunteers, it became apparent that transportation and the long travel distance was a problem for many who would have liked to attend.

To address this, the RSVP Advisory Council and the RSVP Volunteer Coordinator have decided to bring the luncheon closer to you. There will be four separate Volunteer Recognition Luncheons planned for 2019, at different ACAP nutrition sites located around Essex County. Some of you longtime volunteers may remember this was done once before, in 2010, by retired Essex County RSVP Director Barb Brassard. At that time, it was well received by our volunteers and we hope to duplicate that success. Volunteers will receive invitations in the mail, just they have in years past, with instructions on where and when their luncheon will take place. In addition to our annual recognition luncheon, RSVP volunteers receive other benefits, such as being covered by RSVP Insurance, and reimbursement for mileage is available upon request. We’d love to have you as a volunteer and see you at our luncheon! If you would like to join the ranks of a fun bunch of folks giving their time to help others, then give me a call at 518-546-3565 or email me at RSVP@logcal.net.

OLDER AMERICANS MONTH, BILL PAYER SERVICE

May is Older Americans Month: Each year the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) honors a few outstanding volunteers during Older Americans Month. RSVP is excited to announced that two of our own have been chosen as this year’s picks. Joan Aubin and Lloyd Haynes will attend an upcoming ceremony in Albany. Gov. Andrew Cuomo will be on hand to present recognition awards to the attending volunteers. We here at RSVP extend our congratulations to Joan and Lloyd. Your ongoing

tis weren’t enough, the condition also can cause financial problems for those who cannot work or only work parttime, with annual medical costs and earnings loss estimates in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Occupation therapy can help people with arthritis overcome their conditions. The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc., notes that most joints have the potential to develop arthritis, which can affect mobility, cause pain and even lead to deformity. However, the AOTA® also states that OT practitioners aim to help people with arthritis maximize their ability to participate in activities like work or recreation while striving to help patients enhance their quality of life. Because there are more than 100 different types of arthritis, men and women diagnosed with the condition can benefit

A new bill payer program is coming to Essex County. volunteer efforts have made a huge impact on the lives of Essex county residents, and this honor is well deserved. We applaud the statewide recognition of your volunteerism. Joan has been an RSVP volunteer for eight years, most recently as a friendly visitor and rural transportation driver. Lloyd volunteers a great number of hours every month as a rural transportation driver. There is an ongoing need for volunteer drivers. If you would like to join Joan and Lloyd in helping seniors get to their medical appointments, please call me at 518-546-3565 or email me at RSVP@logcal.net. RSVP to launch new bill-payer program: At RSVP, we match volunteers with local nonprofit organizations. One thing that we hear from our nonprofit partners is that there is a great need for a “bill payer” service.

doesn'thave to cost anything.

The Bill Management Assistance Program is a confidential and free service. This homebased service uses trained and backgroundchecked RSVP volunteers who balance the check register, help organize paperwork and prepare a household budget. This is a great aid to seniors who struggle to maintain their financial independence due to overwhelming bills. Funding for this project was generously made by the Adirondack Foundation to roll out the program in Essex County over this year. We are now accepting volunteer applications for the bill payer service. If you like numbers, like to solve problems and want to help a senior in need of simple financial management assistance call me at 518-5463565 or email me at RSVP@logical.net for more information. There will be two different volunteer bill payer trainings offered in the coming months. ■

greatly from individualized care. Onesize-fits-all solutions may not work for arthritis sufferers, who can benefit from one-on-one interactions with OT practitioners. For example, the AOTA® notes that OT practitioners may recommend personalized adaptive equipment to patients with arthritis who are experiencing pressure and discomfort in their hands when holding or working with objects. Before making such recommendations, OT practitioners may analyze patients’ daily activities to ensure they get equipment that will provide the support and relief their specific condition calls for. Arthritis is a global concern that the Arthritis Foundation estimates will only become more prevalent in the decades to come. Occupational therapy can be just what arthritis sufferers need to overcome their conditions and improve their quality of life. ■

Home security tips for seniors Seniors are often targeted by criminals. Though many criminals target seniors from afar via telephone or internet scams, criminals seek to enter seniors’ homes. The Bureau of Justice Statistics offers that, between 2003 and 2013, the ratio of property crime to violent crime was higher for the elderly and persons between the ages of 50 and 64 than it was for younger persons between the ages of 25 and 49. Home security is important for people of all ages, but especially so for seniors and aging individuals living alone. By following certain safety tips and developing a home security plan, seniors can feel safer at home.

LOCK WINDOWS AND DOORS

Natural solutions for going gray with style Gray hair is a natural side effect of aging. The rate at which hair will turn to gray differs based on genetics and other factors. Some people may go gray seemingly overnight, while others may gray at the temples first before the rest of their hair gradually changes color. Aging women often wonder if they should cover up their gray hair or embrace the silver. Going gray is no longer something that has women running to their stylists at the sight of the first gray strand. Some actually opt for silver even before their own gray sets in. According to a 2017 survey of hair trends by L’OrÊal Professional, 28 percent of women embraced or considered opting for silver hair. The trend has continued to gain steam. Celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis and Helen Mirren were some of the first to embrace their grays. Younger celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Pink and Lady Gaga have opted for silver tresses to make a statement. But there are still many women who prefer to transition gradually or avoid the harsh

chemicals in some hair products. The National Cancer Institute states that more than 5,000 different chemicals are used in hair dye products, some of which are reported to be carcinogenic in animals. There are many natural ingredients that can add tint to hair to make gray less visible. Coffee, for example, can cover grays and add dimension to dark tresses. Chamomile tea is recommended for blondes to add natural highlights and perhaps camouflage their grays. Calendula, marigold, rosehips, and hibiscus can deepen red shades or add some subtle red highlights. Henna also is a popular natural method to add a redorange color to hair. Creating highlights to offset gray hair can work as well. Spraying lemon juice on hair and sitting in the sun can produce lightening effects. Many women are seeking natural options to look their best. Embracing grays or creating subtle tints with natural ingredients can help women feel confident and beautiful. â–

It may seem like common sense, but failure to repeatedly lock windows and doors can, and often does, give burglars easy entry into the home.

THINK ABOUT A SMART DOORBELL

Technology now enables doorbells to provide a video feed to a person’s smartphone or tablet over WiFi. This allows residents to see who is at the door and speak to this person without having to open the door. Some products like RingŽ will even register motion activity and record short videos from outside of the house.

DON’T SHARE OR LEAVE KEYS

Avoid leaving keys under a mat or in a flower

“Our mission is to provide leadership and advocacy which creates an environment enabling the County’s aging residents to determine their own destiny in a positive manner.

GET A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM

The best protection against burglars is a home security alarm, states HomeSecurityResource.org. Such an alarm often deters burglars from breaking in.

INSTALL A LOCKABLE MAILBOX

Locked mailboxes restrict access to sensitive information, such as bank account numbers, sent in the mail. Make sure retirement checks or other payments are deposited directly into bank accounts instead of having them sent by check.

USE HOME AUTOMATION

Home automation, or a “smart home, can be utilized to turn on lights, set the thermostat, lock doors, and much more.

ADOPT A DOG

Dogs can be an asset to seniors. Dogs provide companionship and can bark or alert seniors if someone is around or inside of the home. Home security is serious business for seniors who are vulnerable to criminals. â–
