Lady Sentinel softball team readies to reclaim Class C crown By Keith Lobdell

Hannah Ross

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ The Lady Sentinels varsity softball team will look to return to the state playoffs in 2015, following a 13-7 season in 2014. The Sentinels will be led by first year head coach Eric Mullen, who will be assisted by Todd Mitchell. “We are looking to compete for top honors in the CVAC and win another Section VII/Class C title,” Mullen said. “However, it won’t be easy with the loss of seven players (four starters).” While the Sentinels will be without graduates Maura Jebb - who scored the game-winning run in the Class C title game last year - Sadie Hamel, Logan Mars, Kylie Austin, Taylor Dorsett, Jeanette Coon and Gigi Fazioli, they return four members of the Times-Enterprise softball team from one year ago, including starters in pitcher Hannah Ross and first baseman Nicole Fuller, and T-E members Savannah Bezon and Haleigh Wright. “Ross and newcomer Brittany Bruce will handle all the pitching responsibilities,” Mullen said. “Fuller and Lexi Moore (third base) will be looked upon for their leadership and experience at the varsity level. Sophomore’s Wright and Carly Campney (catcher) will need to contribute more this season after playing a full year on varsity last year. Bezon will transition back into the infield (second base) after playing left field last year on varsity. Sophomore/Newcomer Kristen Palandrini will be given the task of patrolling the outfield from center.” Mullen said pitching and defense will be a key factor in determining a successful season. “This softball program has had a lot of success over the past decade and I’m hopeful through a lot of hard work, effort, and dedication we can add to that list of accomplishments,” he said.

Sentinels hopeful to compete on track, in field By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ The Sentinel varsity boys track and field team will bring a balanced yet small group of athletes into the 2015 season. Ò With the loss of eight athletes to graduation and 10 newcomers to the team, our goal is to develop our new athletes so that we can be competitive in the league this season,” head coach Walter Thorne said. Our newcomers have shown a lot of progress and should provide much needed scoring doing the season. New coach Adela Pulaha, who will be mostly working with the distance, also brings a wealth of experience in throws,

high jumps and hurdles and will be helping in all area’s of the team.” Thorne is also assisted by Phil Kneller. While losing reigning state champion hurdler Jay Hebert, the Sentinels return a host of athletes with sectional championship pedigree both in indoor and outdoor competitions. “Marcus Moser (sectional champion in the 55-meter dash) and Justyn Granger will lead us in the sprints, with Shawn Silliman (indoor sectional champion) in the hurdles,” Thorne said. “Our distance runners will be led by Kody Parrott and Brandon Romaca, both who represented the section at the indoor state meet. Cody Shaner and Ezra Long will lead the throwers.” With the combination of newcomers and sea-

Lady Sentinels have young core for 2015 By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — While the Lady Sentinels varsity track and field team only lost two athletes to graduation coming into the 2015 season, this is still a young group of athletes. “With 17 girls on the team, of which 10 are new to outdoor track, and seven returning athletes from last years team, we will once again look to be spoilers this year,” head coach Walter Thorne said. Ò Our goal is to improve on last years 2-5 team. We look to develop our new athletes so that the team can be competitive in the league. Our practice even though we have only been out on the track but one day thus far this season have been productive. How quick our new athletes develop will determine how well we do this season.” Thorne feels the athletes on the team can score points in multiple events, but will need to imrpove in order to move the Sentinels up the rankings. “Our strength is that we have quality athlete at every area who can score points for the team,” he said. “We need improvement in all area’s do to the fact that we don’t have the numbers. Delaney Hughes, Lillith Ida (indoor state competitor in high jump and 55m hurdles), Meg McDonald (indoor state competitor in high jump), McKenzie Price, Sierra Stacey, Sara Vradenburg, and Rachael White will be athletes to watch.” Thorne is assisted by Phil Kneller and Adela Pulaha.

soned athletes, Thorne believes the team is in a good spot to compete despite low numbers. Ò Our strength is that we are a well rounded team, we have strength in all areas, we just don’t have the numbers with only 22 boys out for outdoor track,” he said. “We need improvement in all area’s from our newcomers so that we can match up well with the bigger teams in the section.” Thorne said he expects solid contributions from several athletes, including Collin Bresett, John Cook, Samuel Dushane, Justyn Granger, Giffin Hughes, Ezra Long, Marcus Moser, Kody Parrott, Jabe Rockwell, Colvin Chapman, Brandon Romaca, Cody Shaner and Shawn Silliman.

Panther baseball team seeks to reclaim D title By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — The Panthers varsity baseball team looks to reclaim their spot atop both the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference and Section VII/Class D in 2015. While losing four players to graduation (Times-Enterprise Team reserve Jaice Spring, T-E Team starter Joe Foote, Jordan McIntosh and Calcin Arno), the team returns a solid roster for this season. Ò We are looking to be one of one of the top teams in the league this year,” head coach Randy Pertak said. “We have a solid core of returning pitchers and positional players from last year. They have worked very hard throughout their careers and especially in the off-season and preseason. This squad has set a goal of trying to win sectionals this year after losing in the quarterfinals last season as the top seed. Our first goal

though is to win our first game and see how far we can go.” Anchoring the squad will be a trio of players who will lead from the mound. “We have three pitchers who all saw time on the mound last year in senior Robbie Macey and juniors (T-E Team starter) Kolby Pertak and Sam Millington,” Pertak said. “Also seeing some of the pitching duties will be sophomore Chance Potter. Judd DeBrobander returns behind the plate. He proved to be a solid catcher and threw out a lot of baserunners. Brendan Crowningshield will anchor center field for us.” Pertak said the key to a successful year will be how the newcomers to the team improve throughout the season. “We have some new young players who I expect big results from,” he said. “These athletes all have a good baseball background, but lack varsity experience. We need these players to produce.” Pertak is assisted by Dave Potter and Tony Macey.

Lady Panthers seek to stay in charge in Class D By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — The Lady Panthers varsity softball team will look to keep their hold on the top of the Section VII/Class D mountain in 2015. The squad returns four members of the Times-Enterprise softball squad from 2014, including captain Brittany Foote, starter

Maria Malone and reserves Logan Harrington and Hunter Spaulding. Their lone graduate from the 2014 squad was T-E Team starter Amanda Wolf. “We have more bench strength this season and we will show a lot more power offensively,” head coach Mike Ross said. “We have good team speed and will be very solid defensively.” The depth on the team comes

from all area, including a pair of eighth graders in Hannah Palmer and Shawna McIntosh, who Ross said will be players to watch this season along with Harrington and Foote. Ò We have some young players and if they adapt quickly, we will be tough,” Ross said. “We may experience a learning curve, so time will tell what we have.” The Panthers finished 11-1 over-

all, with a perfect record against Section VII foes. Ross is assisted by Todd Malone, Jonalee Ross and Andrew Stanley.

Moriah baseball seeks return to D finals By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — The Vikings varsity baseball team will look to get back into the Class D championship hunt in 2015. Ò We will look to the play of seniors Christopher Clarke and Sam Russo as key,” head coach Casey Nephew said. Clarke was a member of the 2014 Times-Enterprise Team as a starter. The team graduated three other members of the team in Tom Rancour (starter), Jordy Greenough (reserve) and CJ Raymond (reserve). Despite those loses, Nephew believes there is solid depth on the squad. “We return juniors Cody Stockwell, Billy Larrow, Taylor Slattery, Noah Gilbo and Todd Clarke, all who played a role in the Vikings trip to the Class D Sectional Final in 2014,” Nephew said. “Newcomers Colin Harris, Tanner Haran, Malik Tromblee, Lucas Cutting, Jared Gibbs, Jarred Garrison, Andrew Green and Caleb Yelle will be called upon to make the adjustment to the Varsity level.” Clarke will anchor the pitching staff. “The pitching and leadership of Christopher Clarke should be a major strength for us,” Nephew said. “Chris is a competitor on the mound. He is a smart player and hard worker.” Around the starter, the focus will be on supporting Clarke

when the ball is put in play. “Defense will be a key to our success,” Nephew said. “Our success will depend on how well our first year players make the adjustment to the varsity level.” Nephew is assisted by Jimmy Langey and Donny Tesar.

Viking golfers seek winning year By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — To get where they want to be in 2015, the Vikings varsity golf team will have to be more consistent when away from the winding hills of their home course. “We are focused on consistent scoring home and away, especially on the away course,” coach Lynn Galm said. “Our goal is to finish .500 or better.” The Vikings lose a pair of starters from the team in state qualifier Dylan Scozzafava and top six golfer Jonathan Brassard. However, they return five players with match experience, led by freshman Joe Stahl. Ò The top two positions on the team will more than likely be filled by Stahl and Kyle Wilson, who scored consistently last year,” Galm said. “We will need to finalize the final four spots out of our returning players and newcomers.” Joining Stahl and Wilson as returning members of the team are Nick Rotella, Ryan Munson and Brandon Hammond. Newcomers include Chuck Bryant, Max Slycord, Jared Firlik, Alex Larrow and Sierra Jacques.

keith@denpubs.com SCHROON — Last season, the Lady Wildcats varsity softball team made a Cinderella-esque run to the Section VII/Class D finals, beating traditional powers Moriah and Minerva/Newcomb along the way before stumbling against perennial champion Crown Point. This year, under new coach Lee Silvernail, the Wildcats will look to repeat the feat. “We have some good pitching depth which will allow us to be flexible with our line-ups,” Silvernail said. “We return a core group of players from last year’s team that reached the finals. Our senior leadership will be important and we also have a good group of rookies that will have an impact on our team this year.” Dakota Gadway, named a Times-Enterprise starter last season, returns to a roster which, while deep, will look to replace post-season honorees Julianna Finnerty, Kiana Fiore, Desiree Lanoue and Abigail Veverka. To do so, Silvernail said execution in the field will be key. “Area we need to look at are making quick decisions in games, being smart and disciplined,” he said. “It will be important for us to limit errors and continue to work hard throughout the season.” Gadway joins a trio of leaders which include Molly Wisser and Brooke Wheeler. Ò They are going to be looked at to provide a lot of help this year,” he said. “I also expect some of newcomers to be players to watch this year as well.” Silvernail is assisted by Terry Wisser.

Sentinels seek repeat in baseball By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ The Sentinel varsity baseball team will look to continue their stay at the top of the rankings in 2015. “Our goals are to first repeat as CVAC Division II and Section VII/Class C champions,” head coach Dan Dorsett said. “Our hope is to always be competitive in every game we play.” Dorsett said the Sentinels will have a strong pitching staff. Ò Our top two arms (Ryan Trudeau, Dom Banish) are returning and we have five players on the roster who can provide solid pitching on the mound for us this year,” Dorsett said. Trudeau returns to the staff as the 2014 CVAC MVP and captain of the Times-Enterprise Team. Banish was a second team CVAC all star and fellow member of the T-E team. The Sentinels will look to replace seven starters from the 2014 team which finished with a 16-3 record, including T-E members Ty Denno, Evan Graney and Quentin Austin. With a new team to the varsity field, Dorsett said learning

along the way will be key. Ò We need to be able to learn from our mistakes,” he said. “We need to improve both on offense and defense as the year progresses if we are going to reach our goals.” One of the highlights of the year for the Sentinels will be an April 18 trip to the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, where they will play Lake George in a non-league game.

WCS baseball team armed with chemistry, experience By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — Last year, the Warrensburg High School baseball team won a berth in the Sectionals, but the game was cut short when the teams huddled in their dugouts as a furious storm descended on the ballfield, and scattering fans heard hurricane warnings on their radios. The Burghers ended up losing the shortened game in their school’s 11th consecutive trip to Sectionals, but the veteran players returning for 2015 are armed with plenty of experience and a shared mission to succeed. Top returners, all talented athletes, include Shea Irish, Jake Nemec, Alek Olden, Colby Rounds, Brady Rounds, Joe Turner and Mark Monthony. Olden, Irish and Nemec head up the pitching staff, backed up by Turner as well as Cody Ewald, who returns to active duty after an injury sidelined him last year. Colby Rounds, a senior, will be anchoring the outfield with his seasoned leadership, said coach Rex Reynolds, an 11-year coach who’s nearing 100 wins. The infield is full of players with one or more years of varsity experience. Olden, Monthony, Nemec, Irish and Marcus Perrone will share duties at different spots, Reynolds said, adding that Ewald will be competing for an infield position. Irish is a four-year starter and Perrone would be too if he wasn’t sidelined for a year due to an injury. Likely to be contributing in the outfield are newcomers Kyle Boland, a freshman; Mike Kareglis, a junior; and Markus Moyer, a senior. Turner, a 10th grader, is a utility player who can play infield or outfield with considerable skill, Reynolds added. Brady Rounds is a returning backstop who made some great plays last year as a sophomore, the coach continued. Shea Irish is the athlete who shattered school records in basketball this year, and sports fans are expecting him to be a standout on the baseball team as well. “Irish sets the tone for hard work, and Nemec and Olden are right here with him,” Reynolds said. Combined with the Rounds-Rounds connection at center field and catcher, we’re looking for team-oriented play.” Reynolds said the Burghers have chemistry on the field, which will be important on taking on the competitive lineup of teams this year in the Adirondack League. “The bulk of our team has experience and a tremendous work ethic,” he said. “They are excited to get going — We are ready to scrap for every run and out.

Lady Burghers have talented veteran roster entering 2015 Beth Galusha

By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG Ñ Loaded with veteran athletes, the Warrensburg High School Softball team is likely to enjoy another competitive, eventful year. Unlike a number of other teams in the league, the Burghers have most of their starting lineup returning from a squad that secured third in the Adirondack League in 2014 — considered quite an accomplishment considering that the league champion team, Fort Ann, went on to win its second state championship. Last year’s Burgher squad, with its solid hitting and strong defense, conjured up the spirit of the mid-1990s Burgher softball teams that competed for state championships several years in a row. Through hard work and skill development, the 2014 team boosted a softball program that had for years tallied a .500-or-so season records. Last year’s Burgher team compiled a 9-2 league record (12-3 overall), behind Fort Ann as well as Corinth, which was led by league MVP Taylor Fedor, a top hitter in all of Section II. The Burghers only lost a few key players in their lineup to 2014 graduation: third baseman Kerrigan Roth, catcher Makayla Baker, and Whitney Marwica. The returning Burghers are accomplished athletes, and a number of them are All-Stars, either in softball or other sports. Top Returners are Erin Langworthy, a 2014 Adirondack League All-Star; Britanny Frasier, an athlete that’s received considerable media attention; Liz Turner, an Honorable Mention Area All-Star; as well as Bethaney Galusha and Aineen Callahan, two athletic competitors. Coach Teresa Colvin said this week that 2015 brings a lot of shifting of positions. “We have a pretty strong lineup this year,” she said. “Our expectations are to be competitive in the Adirondack League and make a strong appearance in Sectionals.” Considering the strength of this year’s roster, area sports fans are expecting the Burghers to go further in the Section II play than last year, when they were seeded third but upset by Hartford in the Sectional quarterfinals. Like other teams in the southern Adirondacks, the Burghers have been practicing their pitching, hitting and fielding in their gymnasium, waiting for the snow to melt off the playing fields, Colvin said. “I can’t wait to see what this team can do outside,” she said.

Jaguars out to prove sectional win was not a fluke By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — The Jaguars varsity baseball team will look to improve from a 6-6 finish in 2014, and will have a lot of experience in its roster. “We only lost two players (Kyle LaBounty and Dylan Moore) from last year’s 6-6 team which upset Crown Point in sectionals as an eight seed,” first year coach Andrew Snide said. Ò This team has a lot of promise. We have a lot of experience from last year which leaves minimal holes to fill in from last season.” Snide said the pitching staff is deep, which is needed in a shortened spring season where three games per week can quickly become four or even five, not to mention the potential for double-headers. “We have the comfort of having six solid pitchers with Jimmy Morris (sophomore) leading them all,” Snide said. “If these boys put their minds to it, they could have a very competitive team for the season.” Morris returns to the squad after being named a starter on the 2014 Times-Enterprise baseball squad. T-E teammate Nate Prouty also returns to the roster. Ò Our goal for this year is to improve on our previous 6-6 record and to shine during the sectionals,” Snide said. “Our team will rely heavily on the pitching/catching combination of Jimmy Morris and Mark Cleveland. It’s hard to tell what our team is really capable of until we get outside but it looks promising so far.” Snide is assisted by Gene Maiorana.

High hopes abound for Bolton’s baseball success in 2015 By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com BOLTON LANDING — A deep pitching staff and a roster of heavy hitters with sharp defensive instincts is likely to produce a successful season for the Bolton Varsity Baseball Team, sports observers are predicting Coming off a disappointing season in which they lost most of their games to far larger schools, the 2015 team is reloaded with several new players and lots of enthusiasm and talent, according to Mark Andrejkovics, Bolton baseball coach for 15 seasons. The players have been investing a lot of effort in offseason play, and have proven to be aggressive at the plate and on baserunning, Andrejkovics said, adding that his players have mul-

tiple talents and are able to play in several different positions. Leading the charge are a half-dozen pitchers led by Josh CurriBrimhall, known for his velocity as well as control and mix of pitches. “Josh Curri-Brimhall will be the ace of our staff with his power arm,” the coach said. “Also, Daniel Malone — who’s a smart player — returns to the mound to provide a nice one-two combination in our rotation.” These two juniors are likely be throwing to sophomore catcher Garrison Villeneuve, Andrejkovics said. Ò Garrison has displayed a very strong arm and great glove behind the plate,” noting he’s a heavy hitter as well. Joining them will be Corey VanAuken at first base and Michael Smith in left field, both returning juniors who provided solid de-

fense last season, Andrejkovics said. Second baseman Joe Connery, considered a primary leader of the team, will be hitting at the top of the batting order because he was a very consistent hitter last season, the coach said. “Connery and outfielder Mick Reynolds will be important in communication on the field and molding the younger players,” he said, also complimenting seniors Carson Courchaine and Gavin Monroe and sophomores Tyler Dawson and James Reiter. He also said that Jacob Beebe and Richard DeMeo, both freshmen, show promise. “Our players have put a lot of time into our off-season practices and they are confident and excited about the upcoming season,” Andrejkovics said, noting they have shown diligence in practice drills.

Veteran Bolton varisty softball team has talented players By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com BOLTON LANDING Ñ The Eagles softball team has a strong, experienced lineup this year, and expectations are for the squad to experience a competitive season. A number of their players have been playing Varsity since the eighth grade and have substantial skills. A good number of the team members are accomplished athletes, several of them playing on the soccer team that won an unprecedented string of victories and ended up as one of the top four small-school squads in the state. Anchoring the team is a group of seniors: Sarah Calzada, Sam Reiter, Kaitlin Urtz, Melanie Cook and Keitlyn Whitford. Unlike many of the teams in the Adirondack League this year, the Eagles have their veteran pitcher-catcher combination back again this year. Calzada, the Eagles’ starting catcher, has been a key player on varsity since 8th grade. Coach Melanie Persons said Calzada is a very accomplished softball player. “Sarah really takes charge on the field and keeps her cool even in the toughest situations,” Persons said. “She is an outstanding leader, and I am looking forward to watching what she does this season!” Reiter is back as the team’s starting pitcher, Persons said. “Sam is an all-around great player,” the coach said. “She works hard all the time, and it shows.”

The list of seniors also includes Kaitlin Urtz and Melanie Cook, and Persons said she had high expectations for them. Both of them will be infielders. Cook is new to the team this year. “Kaitlin has outstanding reflexes and speed,” she said. “Melanie Cook has impressed me from day one,” Persons added. ”I am excited to see her in game situations.” Rounding out the team are: Caroline Clesceri, a junior; sophomores Caitlyn Johnson, Helen Imbrosci, and Alleigh Cleavland; plus freshmen Maddie Pratt, Ashley Connery, Abbie Persons and Mackenzie Roberts. Calzada, Clesceri, Pratt, and Johnson were members of the Bolton soccer team that persevered through a long string of battles to make it to the state semifinals, and sports fans expect that their ability to perform under pressure will be a considerable asset to the team. Coach Persons said this week she is excited about the 2015 softball squad’s prospects. “Our players have great chemistry and really work well together,” she said. “They have high expectations of themselves for this season, and they’re an extremely dedicated and not afraid to work hard for what they want.” Defense is a primary focus of the team this year, Persons continued, noting that she expects the team to go far.

Ò These girls are fast and not afraid to do what it takes to make the play,” she said. “We’ll be winning games and have a lot of fun doing it!”

North Warren varsity softball: surpassing expectations By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN — The North Warren Varsity Softball Team made substantial strides last year, and for 2015, area sports fans are expecting the trend to continue. North Warren had three consecutive onewin seasons until last year, when former coach Larry Warner went to work developing skills, teaching strategy and boosting confidence. A year ago, Warner predicted that 2014 would be a “building year” to prepare for a competitive 2015 season. The results came earlier than he expected. The Cougars surpassed expectations in 2014, achieving a 5-6 league record, and 6-11 overall. But although the 2014 season’s non-league games were nearly all losses, they were games played against far-larger schools, and the extra experience will now help them compete well in the 2015 schedule, particularly against teams that played fewer games in shortened schedules. While Warner moved on, Renee Feldeisen is now coach, mentoring a team that is dedicated to achievement. Sports fans are predicting the team will enjoy considerable success, considering its depth of experience. The 2014 squad graduated two talented seniors — Alex Nuwar and Lydia Kenney — but the 2015 team has a strong roster of experienced players returning. The lineup includes two veteran pitchers, Cate Hill and Courtney Viele; as well as two talented catchers — Madasyn Bush and Hannah Kenny — to call the shots. The infield features Taylor Feldeisen on third

base, Gabby Needham as shortstop and Taryn Williamson on second base. Playing outfield will be Sarah Stewart, Taylor Olson, Rickie Wicks, Megan Miller, Toni Agard and Julianna Duwar, Feldeisen said. “We will be looking for aggressive fielding and defense from our players,” she said, adding that all her team members will be contributing

on offense with smart, solid slugging. “We are certainly looking to improve on last year’s numbers,” Feldeisen said. “We’ve got a great group of girls who have a lot of athleticism and chemistry.”

Warriors baseball team seeks to reclaim glory years By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — For many years, the Lake George High School Varsity Baseball Team has been a powerhouse, winning championships year after year. Earlier this decade, the Warriors attained three championship titles in five seasons, proving the strength of their baseball program. Coaching expertise, crowd support, the legendary Warrior willto-win as well as player motivation and high self-expectations have all played a part in this legacy. Last year, the Warriors tallied a 10-5 record in a snow-shortened season. In June, standout Warrior athletes Tom Clark, Brandon Matthews, Tyler Brown and Matt Bureau graduated. But working hard this year to step into their roles is a lineup of solid players led by Craig Keenan, Greg Johnson, Patrick Mellon and Andrew Barber. Loaded with as many as nine seniors, the team is experienced and ready to reclaim the glory the team enjoyed earlier this decade, coach Erik Hoover said. “We have many players that can play multiple positions,” he said. “Also, we have a true ace pitcher at the top of the rotation in Greg Johnson.” The players’ character and athleticism and the Warriors’ team chemistry is expected to take them far this year, according to area sports fans. Exhibiting confidence, Hoover shares this positivism about his team’s prospects. “We expect to compete for a league title and advance to the Section II tournament, win Sectionals and then advance to regional and state play,” he said. With an eye on achieving such a successful campaign, Hoover said he is increasing emphasis on discipline in both practice and game play, as well as having his players concentrate on improving their base-running skills. “We’re excited for the season,” he said. “We’re hoping for warm weather to ensure a full season for our players.”

Lady Jaguars look to a year of experience to improve upon By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — While the Lady Jaguars varsity softball team struggled through a 3-11 season in 2014, it earned the players a lot of experience which will be for the team’s benefit in the new season. “We have to have a better record than last year and set a good foundation for the following years,” coach Dave Cavanagh said. Seven seniors return to the squad with experience. It returns a duo of Times-Enterprise team members from 2014 in Makayla Denno and Valeri Gereau. Meghan Pierson, Laura Richards and Emmalee Ellsworth will also be looked upon to provide leadership. Cavanagh said there will be nine sophomores and juniors to support the core of senior players, which makes the Jaguars a deep team. “I am looking for overall improvement on the field,” he said.

Re-tooling Cougars have players armed with will to win By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN — Having lost four strong players to graduation last June, the 2015 North Warren Varsity Baseball team is undergoing a rebuilding process. But the loss of Jared Howe, Jacob Hill, Ethan Frasier and Robert Wallace to graduation isn’t dimming the team’s prospects, as the Cougars have a roster of talented athletes ready to move into the team’s 2015 roster. The lineup features a number of athletes who know that dedication to the sport, rigorous workouts and skill development all pay off. For years, North Warren athletes have performed way beyond expectations for a school with one of the smallest enrollments in the region. For instance, for two years now, the Cougar basketball team has competed deep into sectional play. The 2015 team was ranked number 20 among all Class D schools in the state at the end of the 2015 season. This victorious squad included four members of the 2015 baseball team: Daren Granger, Colby May, Orry Bruce, and Christopher DeFranco — now likely to provide likely to provide leadership on the ball diamond. Alongside these four players, head coach Josh Gifford is looking for strong contributions from Justin Needham and James Hayes. The Cougars have a reputation of being strong defensively, so Gifford is looking to improve the players’ hitting, he said this week. Ò We ended the 2014 season on a high note, winning our last two games,” he said. “I hope we continue right where we left off.”

Despite frigid weather and snow-covered playing fields, Gifford has been keeping his players busy sharpening their skills and reflexes, practicing indoors with an array of new specialized equipment. With the players’ athleticism, relentless conditioning, weight training and skill development, area sports fans have high expectations

for the team and are looking forward to some keen competition on the field. “Our team cannot wait to practice on grass,” Gifford said last week, noting that he and the players all were looking forward to some competitive baseball action, and a substantial number of victories.

Lake George softball team seeks to continue proud legacy Catie Cleveland

By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — Despite losing six seniors to graduation, the 2015 Lake George Varsity Softball Team is ready to embark on solid, competitive season. The Warriors’ softball program enjoys an admirable legacy that stretches back decades. In 2012, Lake George won the Adirondack League; and from 2008 to 2010, the team, led by All-State pitcher Katelyn Callahan, had remarkable accomplishments. During 2014, the Warriors were 8-3 in the league during regular season play, and they provided their fans with plenty of exciting action. Standout athletes lost to graduation in 2014 include pitcher Catie Clevland, infielders Brittany Motta and Cassie Sipowicz, and outfielders Gabby Heunemann and Jess Jablonski. Leading the 2015 roster are catcher Julia McCabe, shortstop Lacey Cormie and outfielder Michelle Fischer, coach Kyle Manny said this week. “This year’s team is rebuilding,” Manny said. “We will be led by senior catcher Julia McCabe who has experience behind the plate and a strong bat. He said the players are dedicated to the sport and have a lot of enthusiasm. “The team has a good mix of experienced players and youth,” he said. “We are looking to translate the hard work being done indoors this preseason into success once the weather allows us to be outside.” The team will be focusing on fundamentals as they play this season, as well as enjoying the sport, Manny said. “Our expectations are for the players to enjoy the game, have fun and play loose,” he said.
