TICONDEROGA — 2015 was a statement year for the Sentinel varsity football program, making it to the final Class D game of the season, coming closer than they or rival Moriah has to earning a state championship crown. Now, it’s on to 2016. “We have always told the kids to focus on what we have to accomplish now and not dwell on the past, and that message is even more important this year,” said head coach Scott Nephew. “This team wants to keep that level of excellence we achieved last year and they have been very focused, but we are very inexperienced in some spots.” With 29 players in practice, including double-digit newcomers, Nephew said the competition to fill spots on the roster has been solid. “The competition in practice with all these guys fighting for spots will help us down the road,” he said. Something that will also help the Sentinels will be returning strength to the offensive line, with three members of the trench team returning to lead the way for the backfield, which also returns experienced players in quarterback Evan Graney and running backs Jevyn and Justyn Granger. “Those three got time in the backfield last year, but we have 11 newcomers that

will push them for that time,” Nephew said. The biggest question Nephew feels needs to be answered before week one is who will take over for a crew of 2015 captains how had been key voices on the team for numerous years in Ryan Trudeau, Chase Dixon and Brody Rocque, among others. “We have a lot of good kids on the team, it will be a matter of determining who will slide into those leadership roles,” Nephew said. For the Sentinels, who finished with a 6-1 record in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference before avenging their lone loss in a Section VII/Class D title game against Moriah, the season will always come down to the rivalry matchup in week eight. “We want to do the same thing we do every year,” Nephew said. “We need to get better every week and be ready when week nine comes.” The Sentinels, who were scheduled to host Beekmantown Sept. 2, but will now play that game on the same day at AuSable Valley, with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Sentinel fans started to refer to the AVCS complex as their second home in 2015, where they had a record of 4-0 on their way to the Carrier Dome with wins over AVCS, Moriah, Tupper Lake and Whitehall. TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga varsity cross country teams will be looking to get big runs from newcomers to be competitive in the 2016 season. “We are a young team that lost a lot of seniors last year,” coach Jay Wells said. “We will be looking for steady improvement throughout the year.” The boys team will be looking to replace a pair of state qualifiers in Brandon Romaca and Colvin Chapman, with Wells looking to a trio of experienced runners to lead the way. “We will be looking for leadership from veterans Joel Cook, Jon West and Nick Fitzgerald.” On the girls side, the team does return two-time state qualifier Sierra Stacey, who will be leading a team of five runners. “On the girls side, we will be looking to increase our competitiveness with Sierra leading the way,” Wells said.

TICONDEROGA — Looking to build off of the 2015 season, the Ticonderoga varsity soccer team will rely on experience on the field as they prepare for the 2016 Division II soccer season. “Although the Sentinels lost only three players to graduation, those seniors each played a key role on the team,” head coach Tina Russell said. “With 12 returning players, they will be called upon to help bring the new players up to speed. This is a must in order to have team success.” Russell will be joined on the sideline by long-time head coach Kathy Tubbs. Russell said working the fundamentals will be key for the team and, so far, they have been giving the effort needed to master those skills. “With a need to improve the overall skill level of the team, the girls have been working hard and they continue to improve each day,”

she said. “Team speed continues to be our biggest asset.”

CROWN POINT — The Lady Panthers varsity soccer program looks to stay in the thick of the race for a Division III and sectional crown in 2016. The Panthers, who finished the 2015 season with a 13-2-1 record, return a powerful offense led by Kayli Stone and Torrie Vradenburg, both named to the Division III all star team last year. “Sophomore Swade Potter and some dynamic new comers on the front line will also help,” head coach Jayna Anderson said. “The middle of the field will continue to be run by returning sophomores Hannah Palmer and Mickaela Gunnison, along with a strong group of returning and new players,” Anderson added. “Our defense will be led by returning senior Amber DuShane and returning juniors Christina Simpson and Bailey Noel.” Anderson said the big change for the season will be replacing all star goalie Abigail Carpenter. On the field, with 11 returning players and the addition of seven newcomers, Anderson

whom were starters at some point during the 2015 season. Pertak said while 12 players remain, there are some holes to fill on the roster. “We lost first team all stars Kolby Pertak and Noah Macey along with second team all star Judd Debrobander,” he said. “Those are going to be some big shoes to fill, but we have very high expectations with a solid core returning.” Pertak said seniors Chad Stephens, Chance Potter, Jamie LaDeau along with

ing will be the foundation to build around on the field. “Junior Jacob Norton returns to the goal this year after an impressive rookie campaign and returning players Cade DeBrobander and Jacob LaDeau need to continue their impressive play from last year,” Pertak said. “Newcomers Noah Peters and Reese Celotti look to help some of voids. Returning players Zach Russell, Jon RochSears, Jadan Spaulding and Dominic Austin will help to reshape this team along with newcomer Alex Russell.” Pertak said the team should be able to finish in the front third, with an attacking line of Potter, Pertak and Zach Spaulding, who

combined for 25 goals and 14 assists last season. “Chad Stephens, Cade DeBrobander, Reese Celotti and Dominic Austin will look to control midfield,” Pertak said. “The Ladeau brothers along with Noah Peters and Jadan Spaulding will anchor

the defense.” Communication will be a big part of the preseason program for the Panthers. “The key to this year will be how quickly the boys learn to communicate on the field and learn where each other is,” said Pertak.

keith@suncommunitynews.com

SCHROON — After a year as members of the Johnsburg soccer program, Wildcat soccer returns to the field in 2016 with a new head coach and the goal to have an exciting year in Division III of the Northern Soccer League. “Entering the upcoming season, we are a young team focused on our chemistry and defense,” said new coach Derrick Denteh. “We will use our speed and aggressiveness on defense and our willingness to make our teammates better to propel forward. An area we will improve in is our shot selection.”

Denteh said the team will rely on a pair of returning players to lead them. “Our team looks to Branden Hall and Jordan DeZalia as the engine of the team,” he said. “Their value to our team carries off the court in how they continue to conduct themselves as part of the Schroon Lake Central School Wildcats.” Denteh said the team expectations were broken down into five areas: To compete mentally and physically at a high level; display good sportsmanship whether win or lose; establish and maintain the highest standard for academic excellence, athletic skill and sportsmanship; to make the sectionals >> See WILDCATS | pg. 19

SCHROON — Last year, the inaugural Wildcat cross country team sent a runner to the state meet in Angie Stellabotte. In 2016, a quartet of student-athletes will try to run in her footsteps. Coach Dave Williams will again lead the team, which will have a full schedule as part of the Champlain Valley

SCHROON — Experience and depth will be the keys if the Schroon Lake varsity girl’s soccer program is going to ascend the Division III mountain in the Northern Soccer League. Along with returning experienced players throughout the lineup, the Lady Wildcats will also return coach Mary Lou Shaughnessy. “This year the Lady Wildcats have a well-rounded team,” Shaughnessy said. “With a total of 16 young ladies, this team hopes to be competitive and make a run into the sectionals. We have speed, we have talent, we have heart and desire so we are expecting a good season.” The teams experience starts in the back with senior McKayla Vanderwalker, who can anchor the Wildcat defense from either the goalie or sweeper positions. She will be joined by juniors Amanda and Sam Grey, twin sisters who can present challenges for opponents, according to Shaughnessy. A young but talented group of midfielders will add to the core with juniors Alora Belrose >> See SCHROON | pg. 19

CHESTERTOWN— With a full roster for the first time in several years, the 2013 North Warren Cross-Country program is likely entering a turnaround year, coach Judy Benway said this week. North Warren has for decades enjoyed remarkable success in cross-country running competition. With 17 runners representing North Warren — and eight more from Johnsburg High School joining the squad this week, the team may have a deeper roster this year than ever before. From 2005 to 2012 under the guidance of both Benway and former coach Bernie McCann, the North Warren Cross-Country team produced 47 Adirondack League All-Stars and nine state tournament qualifiers. The team also racked up 120 wins and 20 losses, as well as two Section II championships — one each for the boys and girls squads. A number of their runners have competed in several consecutive state championships. During those seven years, the Girls team won the Adirondack League title outright three times plus two times in second place, and the Boys won two league championships and four second-place titles. The teams have also secured “AllAcademic” status. Benway said this legacy of success was

due to team camaraderie and fun the runners routinely enjoy at events and in practice. “Were one big happy family,” she said. “Our runners have a lot of fun, and this attracts a lot of students to the team.” Exemplifying this family spirit are the spaghetti dinners that Benway — a home economics teacher — cooks up and feeds her athletes before meets. Benway noted that one of the attractions of cross-country running which contributes to the team bond, is that unlike other team sports, no one sits on the bench. Every meet, all athletes get to compete. “In cross-country, everybody gets to run — and come home with hardware if they do well,” she said. She also noted that regardless of a race’s outcome, each runner receives positive encouragement and is considered an important, contributing member of the team. The Cougar component of the 2016 joint North Warren-Johnsburg team has eight seniors and four juniors, so the team is armed with experience, Benway said. “The majority of our seniors are very dedicated runners,” she said adding that four of the team members run regularly during the summer. “Our runners push hard, and I really believe they’ll be quite competitive this year.”

Yarosh to be a big contributor making goals. “They anticipate each other’s moves well and are adept at passing the ball.” Lewis added that Gagnon has a bright future ahead of her. “Sydney is very aggressive and a good ball handler,” Lewis said. “She knows the game and can read the defense.” For several years, the Cougars have tallied a fairly even win-loss record. Their teams have been quite competitive, despite the fact North Warren is one of the smallest schools in the region. Lewis predicted that her 2016 team, with its core of experienced players, will enjoy a successful season. “Our players all work well together; they’ve got a great attitude,” she said. “They are working hard — we run a lot and get our drills in.” Lewis said that she was “really happy” about how the team was performing in preseason play. “Everyone puts in 100 percent, and our chemistry as a team is really nice,” she added. “We’re really excited about this year!”

thom@suncommunitynews.com

CHESTERTOWN — Armed with talented and experienced players, the North Warren High School Field hockey team — which only lost two players to graduation in June — is likely to give their opponents some very tough competition on the field during 2016. Those two graduating players were Cougar goaltender Morgan Yarosh and Cate Hill, both Adirondack-Wasaren League All-Stars. Fans are happy that 2015 league AllStar Hanna Kenney, a senior who controlled the midfield last year, is returning — alongside solid defender Sarah Stewart, also a senior — and Sydney Gagnon, the team’s top scorer in 2015 although she was merely a freshman. Coach Lynn Lewis praised the trio as well as her entire 2016 team. Kenney and Stewart, she said, provide leadership for the 2016 Cougar crew. “They get the other players going every day in practice,” Lewis said. “We really have a bunch of leaders this year. Hannah’s our ‘field general,’ telling the girls where they meed to go.” Lewis said that Stewart was the 2015 team’s ‘flyer’ on corners 2015. This year, Sarah is moving up front, in a very different role as part of an offensive attack squad.

“Sarah is a very fast player,” Lewis said. Standouts up front on that scoring squad will likely be Sydney Gagnon and Chelsea Yarosh, both sophomores. Chelsea, along with Cate Hill, tallied the top number of assists in 2015. Lewis said she’s counting on Gagnon to repeat or exceed her accomplishments his year, and she’s relying on Chelsea

NORTH CREEK — While the Johnsburg varsity boy’s soccer team will have to replace seven starters from the 2015 squad, they know those who they work with will be in the program for more than one year. Coach Randy LaFountain, who coached the Minerva-Newcomb boys team in 2015, will start the season with only one senior on his roster, leaving 14 players who will be in the system for multiple years. “If we have a strength it is I have a group of players that are very quick and fast,” LaFountain said. “The team has been working hard on improving their soccer skills every day and I feel the league should be well balanced from top to bottom. Keene who has won the league the last two season may be the team to beat again. Our goal is to compete in every match.” LaFountain said the team has some key returning players who should have solid seasons. “Seamus Tomb and Patrick Riedinger will be

NORTH CREEK — The Lady Jaguars varsity soccer program has come a long way in it’s first years of existence. While hosting their first sectional game against Willsboro in 2014, it was a road trip to Crown Point last season which gave the Jaguars their first post-season win and advanced them to the Section VII/Class D semifinals, where they lost to eventual champion Chazy. Now, the Lady Jags seek more, returning a solid core of senior leadership which has learned much under head coach Cindy Homer. “We have Savanna Berg back and goal, while Megan Bacon, Khaleah Cleveland and Taylor Dwyer and strong and fast,” Homer said. “Jamie Bruce is a good over-seer.” Homer said her biggest concern is depth,

NORTH CREEK — The Jaguar varsity cross country team will run with North Warren this season, bringing depth according to coach Gary Wilson. “We now allow Athletes to participate in two sports and thus have gained four soccer players to our team,” Wilson said. “These folks are great runners and should add a lot of spice to the team.” Wilson said the squad returns runners who made strides throughout last season and will look for continued progress in the new year. “Returning prospects for Johnsburg are Ava Anderson, who performed well last year, as well as Sasha Kinblom,” Wilson said. “On the boys side we have a lot of strong runners. NEWCOMB — The Minerva/Newcomb varsity boy’s soccer program will return several key players as they look to remain competitive in Division II of the Northern Soccer League. Coaches Matt and Millie Winslow return to the sidelines to co-lead the boy’s squad, which returns key senior leadership in goalie Caleb Winter, midfielder Aiden LaCourse, defender Caleb Armstrong and forward Noah Haneman. A staple to the Mountaineer program, the squad will also feature a number of foreign exchange students, who Matt Winslow said will join the team in the middle of the preseason and mix in with the team before the start of the regular season.

OLMSTEDVILLE — The Minerva/Newcomb varsity girl’s soccer program is looking for a lot out of newcomers in 2016. Over the past two season, the program has lost 15 starting players to graduation. “Last year we came off of a 16-1 season, and losing nine solid starters; this season we are starting having lost another six starting seniors to graduation,” said coach Candice Husson. “We have a young team this year with only three seniors. I am optimistic that we will be in the middle of the pack this season again. The girls are working hard in preseason practices and already beginning to work well as a team.” Despite the losses, the Lady Mountaineers have two players with starting experience, including senior striker Jordan Bush, who was a member of the 2014 team that made it to the sectional finals. “Jordan will be the leader and player to watch this year again,” Husson said. “She is quick, smart, and a real team player.” The Mountaineers also return sophomore goalie Grace Armstrong, who played strong in net last year as a sophomore.

“Grace continues to make strides in the goal and will be the anchor in our defense,” Husson said. The coach said she is also looking from contributions from a senior Megan Kelly and junior Ericka Demars. “Megan is showing great growth and potential so far this summer,” she said. “Ericka Demars is another player to watch, having only played half the season last year due to a concussion, she is back and ready to make up for last time. She is aggressive and has quick ball handling skills.”

INDIAN LAKE — The Lady Orange varsity soccer program will enter the new season with a new coach and veteran

leadership on the field. Emily Stephan, who served as the Lady Orange’s modified coach last season, steps into the head coaching position for varsity as coach Robert Linhart moves over to the boy’s program. On the field, the team will be led by Lillian Dechene, a jackof-all-trades athlete who has played every position from goal to striker for the Lady Orange over the past three years.

LONG LAKE — The Indian Lake/Long Lake varsity boy’s soccer program will look to find leadership on all thirds of the field in order to be competitive in Division III of the Northern Soccer League this season. “Senior Austin Pierce should be a solid foundation in the midfield,” said coach Robert Linhart. “Chandler O’BrienBrown should come into his own this year being a sophomore

and be the catalyst for the defense. Calvin Seaman should lead the attack on offense.” Linhart believes the team can play solid soccer in the division and keep in the middle of the pack. “Our goal is to go .500 in league play,” he said.

BoltonÊ girlsÊ soccerÊ playersÊ Ê areÊ poisedÊ toÊ reclaimÊ glory By Thom Randall

thom@suncommunitynews.com

BOLTON LANDING — Two years ago, the Bolton-Warrensburg Varsity Girls Soccer team re-wrote local sports history, taking its campaign of victories into the state Final Four. In 2015, a core group from that team followed up by winning a second consecutive Adirondack League Championship, against some formidable competition. This year, Bolton is on its own, and again will compete in the Adirondack League, and move from the C-school classification to D, yet face the challenge of being the smallest of all the D’s in Section II. Coach Patrick Morency said his 2016 players, despite their remarkable talent, have their work cut out for them, considering the talent on the Lake George, Whitehall, and Fort Ann teams. The leadership of five-year starter Erin Courchaine and four-year starter Andi Pfau — both lost to graduation in June — will be missed and younger players will need to step up and fill their roles, he said. “Our team is looking to improve defensively so that we can limit our opponents’ scoring chances and create goal-scoring opportunities,” he said. Ryley Scott of Warrensburg, another graduate, will also be sorely missed, he said, noting it might take many players to replace her firepower and toughness. The team will be lead by six-year starter Senior Abigail Seamans, a key player in that stellar 2014 team as well as last

year, with her remarkable attacking prowess. Seamans finished 2015 with 14 goals and 11 assists, and was selected as a First Team Adirondack League All-Star, a Class C Section II All-Star, as well as being named to the Class C All-State Fifth Team. In addition to Seamans, Chloe Monroe and Caitlyn Speranza, also a First Team league All-Star, will be sharing duties of executing the offense. Juniors Nyla Green and Madeline DeLorenzo, Sophomore Meghan McGurl, Freshman Leah Monroe, and 8th graders Maria Baker and Chelsea Speranza will be counted on to contribute to the attack, Morency said. Defensively, Bolton will be lead by three-year returning starter and First Team league All-Star Madelyn Pratt, who was named First Team Adirondack League All Star and a Class C Section II All-Star.

“Madelyn will be expected to use her vast experience to help anchor a young, but talented, group of defenders,” Morency said. The coach also noted the hard work and commitment shown off-season by returning starter Summer Foy, adding that he hopes she builds on her success last year and boosts her role on defense. He also praised Senior Caitlyn Johnson, noting her extensive experience and leadership on defense. Key defender Junior Ashley Connery, however, will be sidelined due to an ACL injury. He added that he looks forward to seeing rookies Kaitlyn Burke and Katelyn VanAuken develop their defensive skills and see them contribute. Morency said that expectations are high, and his players will be working hard as they have in prior years to sharpen their skills and build team chemistry. He said that his players will be focusing day-by-day on what needs to be accomplished to meet their goals. Morency concluded said he is confident his players will be dedicated to achieving success. “By maintaining a winning standard throughout every moment of our season, we will put ourselves in a position to have success in 2016,” he said. The team concentrates on off-road running because the home cross-country course in Warrensburg consists of trails. West said that he and Winchell are happy with the turnout for the 2016 team, which in pre-season was 11 boys and five girls, and may be more by the first meet. West said the 2016 runners have a lot of positive energy to go along with their athletic talent. “Our runners are working hard — they keep up a good pace — and they’ve got a lot of enthusiasm, he said. “Were focused on this year’s objectives.”

WARRENSBURG — Embarking on its sixth year in existence, the Warrensburg-Bolton Cross-Country team has earned a reputation as a competitive squad. Originally formed with an intent to not only offer an alternative sports option, but also to provide rigorous endurance training for wrestlers and other athletes, the team’s long-distance runners have obtained their share of awards and recognition. Starting off in 2012, the team placed third in the league and 7th in Section II, although they’d been ranked 12th in the preseason. Over four years, the runners on the team earned coveted Adirondack League All-Star awards, as well as garnering respect from fans and sports enthusiasts across the region. Sharing the mentoring duties have been Head Coach Brian Winchell and Assistant Coach Doug West, president of the Warrensburg Central Board of Education. League All-Stars returning this year to lead the team include Zoe Gavin, Ryan McNeill and Maddie Douglas, West said. They are joined by some promising newcomers Eden Ne-

and worse. Overcoming adversity is our philosophy now.” One aspect of the Burgher offense that might catch opponents off-guard is the planned use of seven or eight running backs, so the competition won’t know who to key on.

One primary strategy for the 2015 Burghers is to rotate players in and out to maintain energy on the field, Perrone said. “We want our players to be fresh in the fourth quarter when our opposing teams have to go both ways and play 90 ‘reps’ a game,” he said. ing pre-season, from his veterans, as well as players that took a year or two off but now returned, and the rookies. “We have a lot of exciting things going on, and the kids have bought into the philosophy and system,” he said. “The players have all been working very hard, and I’m proud of them. We all have high expectations for the season.”

LAKE GEORGE — Brittany Jones has a daunting journey ahead of her in her debut season as Lake George High School’s Varsity Volleyball coach . She’s taking over for the legendary Cathy “Panic” Stanilka, who retired from coaching this past school year after mentoring volleyball and softball teams for 40 years. One of the winningest and most respected coaches in upstate New York, in volleyball alone Stanilka has won well over 600 matches. Stanilka’s volleyball and softball teams have won state championships and dozens of regional and league titles. Through those four decades, encouraged, prodded, challenged and inspired her players to achieve their very best. Her drills and practice routines were rigorous and her standards were high, but she simultaneously had a close bond with her athletes that motivated them to perform up to their potential. Lake George 2009 graduate Brittany Jones, 25 — who moved up this year from the JV volleyball coach position — was one of those volleyball players who with her teammates achieved considerable success under Stanilka’s encouragement. Watching a pre-season practice session in which Jones conducted a pre-game drill that’s focuses on building team chemistry, it appears she will have an approach similar to Stanilka’s. Last year’s Warriors had a 15-3 record, admirable in the highly competitive Adirondack League. In the Section II semifinal, however, they encountered a disappointing loss to arch-rival Fort Edward. Taking a momentary break from coaching duties recently, Jones said that a core group of veterans has returned to lead the team to success. “Our strength for 2016 is that we have a lot of girls with considerable experience,” she said, noting that all but two new

LAKE GEORGE — Explosive offense, savvy plays and aggressive defense characterize the 35-year legacy of football at Lake George. For many years, Jeff Bennett has been head coach, teaching the players the subtleties — and the not-so-subtle aspects — of effective blocking, tackling, and play execution. In recent years, however, the Warrior football program has undergone it’s challenges: the success of the Lake George soccer program has attracted dozens of top athletes who undoubtedly would be outstanding football players. Plus, a shrinking student body has also taken its toll. This year’s football players, however, appear to be determined to prevail, reflecting the spirit of Warrior football’s glory years. Bennett and his assistant coaches — Steve Guidetti, Ryan Seymour and Jay Ellis — also showed enthusiasm this week as they were instructing their athletes. Bennett and crew are renowned for annually dedicating their considerable talents, and a lot of time, to developing the skills of their players. During a practice this week, Bennett watched his receivers take off downfield, and one of them catch a long pass. “Nice way to flatten out that route,” he said to one of them. Bennett then smiled as he saw two linemen tear into each other with gusto. Bennett walked to the sidelines, then talked with positivism about the team’s prospects for 2015. “It’s early, but I’ve seen great energy on the field this year,”

he said. “It looks like we’ll also have good leadership. Bennett said his “holy trinity” of seniors — Nick Motta, Konner McHugh and Shane McCabe — will be inspiring the rest of the players to reach their full potential. Bennett said Motta, a tailback and linebacker, is very vocal in his encouragement, and works hard in the weight room. “Nick is strong, fast and aggressive,” he said. McHugh, who has solid experience playing for Queensbury High and is now a Hadley-Luzerne student, is also strong and fast. He’s going to be putting his talents to work as a fullback and linebacker. Second-year varsity player Shane McCabe, chosen for quarterback and free safety, also has considerable attributes, Bennett said. “Shane is very athletic — he executes plays well, and he’s tough to tackle.” McCabe deferred the credit to his peers. “Its all about the team, not me,” he said. “All I care about is winning.” Nick Motta offered his thoughts. “No joke, the team chemistry is 10 times better than ever,” he said, noting that the 2016 players have set both individual and team goals. “We’re truly a band of brothers.” Center and middle linebacker Mike Sutliff moved to the sidelines after he and his teammates finished some drills. “We’re working hard and we’re motivated,” he said. “We’re going to be ready for our opponents this year.”

PORT HENRY — It can’t help but sting, and it still does. Even coach Don Tesar admits, while the Moriah Vikings earned the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference title with an unblemished 7-0 record in 2016, that was not enough. “We did not get where we wanted to go, we wanted to go further,” the Moriah varsity football head coach said, referring to the 6-0 overtime loss to the state finalist Ticonderoga Sentinels in the

Section VII/Class D title game. “A lot of these kids have done a lot of hard work in the winter and summer with the goal of going far this year,” Tesar added. A total of 32 players showed up for the opening days of practice this season, which Tesar credited both to the success of the team and the fact many of those behind the 2015 accomplishments have moved on. “These kids know they are going to have a chance to play because they are shooting for a lot of spots,” he said. How many? Tesar said

there are only five positions on the entire field which have someone returning in a starting role, three on the defensive side and two on offense, leaving 17 open spots to compete for. However, Tesar thinks the competition will lead to another positive strong numbers can afford a team — depth. “I think we will have more depth than we did last year, especially on the line of scrimmage,” he said. “There will be people we will be able to sub in at certain spots on the line and we will also have >> See FOOTBALL | pg. 19

PORT HENRY — The Moriah varsity girl’s soccer team will look to improve off of their 2015 season and advance deeper into the Section VII playoffs. Led by new head coach Christina Slattery, the team returns a number of starters from the previous season as well as JV call-ups who will bring speed an athleticism to the lineup. “I have multiple athletes who play in various positions,” Slattery said. “These athletes

have played together, work well with one another and compliment their teammates abilities. I expect that each athlete gives 100 percent and are competitive on game day. I feel with their talent they can be successful in their season.”

PORT HENRY — It will be a new year for the Moriah girl’s varsity swimming program in 2016, as the team will field an allunderclassmen roster for the season. “Our goals this year are to work hard on individual goals,” coach Angie Childs said. “We

have a small and young team. With our lack of swimmers it will be hard to score points as a team.” Sarah Drake will be the lone junior on the team, while Jaiden Varmette, Lily Williams and Taylor Brassard constitute a trio of freshman. Eighth grader Elizabeth Vondwingelo and seventh grader Emma Collard round out the roster.

depth in the backfield.” The backfield depth will be led by new quarterback Dylan Trombley, who replaces Adam Jaquish under center. “Dylan is throwing the ball extremely well and we have to focus on finding him receivers,” Tesar said. “We will not have the size like we did last year with Taylor (Slattery) and Jarrod (MacDougal) on the outside, but we have kids who can catch the ball and do something with it.” Another area the Vikings have to build upon is their inexperience. “This team will need to mature quickly because we are so young,” Tesar said. “We have only 10 seniors, and even some of them are playing football for only their first time. We need to find out who will step up and adjust to the varsity level of football and physicality.” With only two starters back, Tesar also said the defense will be key. “The hardest thing to do is get together early on defense,” Tesar said. “That is the big question, especially in the secondary.” — No roster was available at the time of print.
