Young Lady Jags set to compete By Keith Lobdell
keith@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK Ñ The Johnsburg girls varsity basketball team will look to their youth and numbers to compete in the Northern Basketball LeagueÕ s Division III this season. “We want to develop a defense that fits our strengths and use the depth of our bench to our advantage,Ó coach Andrew Snide said. Ò We have some young athletes that are going to lead the team and we have a team that is eager to improve and work hard to become a competitive team. Having 13 players allows for a deep bench and constant fresh legs.Ó Snide said the team has to work on developing their interior game, being able to use the height of their front court players to the teamÕ s advantage. Ò Liz Ordway should be able to control the paint and get a fair amount of rebounds and putbacks due to her height,Ó he said. Ò Savanna Berg is only a Sophomore but will get a lot of playing time as she will be bringing the ball
up. She has great control and understands basketball which will lead to her making plays. Makayla Denno will be returning as the leading scorer from last year. She has an injury that will keep her out for the beginning of the season, but, we have high hopes for success when she returns.Ò

Youthful Mountaineers set to start their climb to the top By Keith Lobdell
keith@denpubs.com MINERVA/NEWCOMB Ñ The Minerva/Newcomb boys varsity basketball team is ready to start their ascent up the rankings. Ò My goal is to make Minerva/Newcomb basketball competitive again,Ó coach Thomas Ramsay said. Ò After years of being at the bottom or near bottom of the division the goal is improve and compete for division and sectional titles. The bulk of this group has been under my direction for the past two years at the modified level where they went 24-4 (including at 14-0 season) and we want to see if they can win at the varsity level.Ó Ramsay said the team only has four years of varsity experience among the roster of 13 players, so learning the speed of the varsity game will be key. Ò We are eager to learn and improve daily,Ó he said. Ò We are a defensive team that plays defense well and scoring will improve throughout the season. Our success at the lower level was balanced scoring, discipline and the ability to adapt to the changes the game presents. If we can make those adjustments we will be able to be competitive and win at the varsity level.Ó The Mountaineers will have size on the front line, with three players at 6Õ 3Ó or taller. They also have speed and defensive awareness. The team has a trio of returning players in Kalab Helms, Randy DeCook and Stephen Viele, who Ramsay will look to for leadership along with contributions from Mickey Johnson and Caleb Armstrong.

keith@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE/LONG LAKE Ñ The Indian Lake/Long Lake varsity boys basketball team will have plenty of familiar faces taking the court when they start Northern Basketball League Division III play. Ò We only lost one senior from last year, Shane Shortt, but are returning four starters,Ó head coach Craig Seaman said. Ò Henry Sandiford at the point guard led the team in scoring with an average of 17 a game and was co-mvp of the league. Curtis Seaman led the league with 35 made three-pointers and averaged 15 points and over eight rebounds a game. Rudy Geisson is one of our better rebounders and defenders, but can also score the basketball, and Zack Hoag a small forward is a quick athletic defender who can score and rebound.Ó Seaman said exchange student Mathis Vormelker could see time as the fifth starter. Ò He is a big kid who can shoot, rebound, and moves well without the ball, and also passes very well,Ó he said, adding he believes the team will also be able to compete when it goes to the bench. Ò We are also a deep team with five or six boys coming off the bench who can contribute to the team,Ó he said. Ò Noah Pine, Austin Pierce and Josh King all had a good preseason, showing they are ready to come in and help with defense, rebounding or scoring at any time. Dominick Miller is very defensive minded, Calvin Seaman can handle
the ball as point guard and Chase Hutchins can play either a guard position or a small forward.Ó

WarEagles eye more titles Reloaded Warriors seek title By Thom Randall By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com
LAKE GEORGE Ñ The Lake George Boys Basketball team won the state Class C Championship in 2012-13 with a stellar lineup and a remarkable dedication to their goals. In that 2013 state championship game, thensophomore Warrior point guard Joel Wincowski, who was named Class C state tournament MVP Ñ scored 33 points, including seven three-pointers against a top-ranked team. Wincowski returned in 2013-14 to lead his team to the Adirondack League championship, and a 19-2 overall record. From that latter team, graduating this past June were Andrew Zibro, Tyler Brown, Matt Bureau and Jeff Naftaly. This year, Wincowski is the only member of that championship team to remain on board. Last year, Wincowski Ñ one of the areaÕ s best basketball athletes in recent history Ñ scored an average of 28 points per game. Just recently, Wincowski committed to play basketball for a Division I college. For 2013-14, backing up Wincowski are Kyle
Jones, Andrew McGowan, Duncan Mularz, Dylan Smith, Gabe Sallstrom, and Colby Cracco. ÒW e expect Joel Wincowski will get a lot of help from our very deep and balanced roster,Ó coach Dave Jones said this week, noting that Wincowski has boosted his strength this year by working out. ÒE very single player is talented and we expect every one to contribute,Ó Jones said, noting that opponents will double-team and triple-team Wincowski, who is virtually as tough on defense as he is productive on offense. Newcomers to the roster are Craig Keenan, Greg Johnson, Dylan Hubbard, Zeke Reynolds and Steve Colletti. Wincowski said this week he and his teammates are focusing on each challenge as it emerges. ÒW eÕ re taking it one game at a time,Ó h e said. LAKE GEORGE Ñ Riding high on the momentum of their prior yearÕ s accomplishments, the Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne wrestlers are optimistic about their upcoming 2014-15 season. Also, each wrestler on the teamÕ s lengthy lineup either has years of experience or a steely commitment to live up to the combined teamÕ s admirable reputation. The War-Eagles have a remarkable record of victories, as their team captured first place last year in the Class C tournament and second in the Section II Finals. Their depth of talent was also proven by winning first place in last year’s Glens Falls Tournament, the Wasaren League Tournament, and the Canajoharie Dual Meet tourney, all considered highly competitive. They also were named runner-up in the in the 2013 Queensbury Holiday Festival tourney. A large number of current WarEagles were named to the 2013-14 Adirondack League team: Lake George athletes Connor Spellburg, Richie Conte, Gideon Jardine, Shane McCabe, Forrest Kubricky, and Patrick Barber, alongside Hadley Luzerne students Jason Hoffman, Tyler VandenBogaard and 2014 Lake
George graduate Tom Clark. Hailing from Lake George, Barber is a Section II runner-up champion. Gideon Jardine, a Section II champion back in 2012, will be wrestling at 120 pounds this year. Shane McCabe, second in the Class C Sectionals last year, will be wrestling at 132-138 pounds. Connor Spellburg, who placed third in the Class C Sectionals, will be wrestling at 99-106 pounds. The latter three are sophomores from Lake George. Richie Conte, a Lake George Freshman, won the 2013 Section II Class C championship as an 8th grader. He will be wrestling 120-126 pounds this year. Two wrestlers from Hadley-Luzerne High made waves last year. Jason Hoffman took top individual honors last year for the WarEagles, placing 4th in the state in Division I at 160 pounds. Tyler VandenBogaard placed in the Section II tourney. Cougars seek to reclaim glory of recent years Lady Cougars have height, strength, experience By Thom Randall
thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN Ñ Just nine months ago, the North Warren Boys Basketball team was at the Glens Falls Civic Center, playing a fast and physical Section II semifinal game against Argyle, the prior Class D state champions. The North Warren Cougars were capping off a stellar 13-7 season that took them the furthest in regional tournament competition since 2007. In 2012-13, the Cougars captured second place in the Adirondack League Western Division with an 11-5 record, second only to Lake George, who eventually were crowned State Champions. This year, the team is working to reclaim the glory, and perhaps go further. Although the Cougars have lost key 2013-14 players Justice Parker, Iain Underwood, Dan Hill, and Robert Wallace to graduation, theyÕ ve got a remarkably strong lineup this season to make their goals a reality. One of the top returning athletes is Nick Sapienza, who surpassed 1,000 points as a Junior. Last season, Sapienza predicted as he exited the Civic Center that the team would be returning as Section II contenders in 2015. Sapienza, who scored about 20 points per game in early 2014, said that not only several accomplished teammates of his would be return-
ing, but theyÕ d be joined by some talented members of the Cougar Junior Varsity team, which lost only two games in 2013-14. Sapienza himself will likely be the leading scorer. His specialty has been making gamechanging shots at critical times. Known for his fast, sure moves and solid outside shooting, Sapienza has been a key player for the Cougars for four years already, Coach Jeremy Whipple said. ÒN ick is an excellent player at both ends of the floor,” he said, noting Sapienza was drafted as an eighth-grader. Whipple said the starting lineup was likely to be Sapienza, Daren Granger, Hayden Smith, Colby May and Jacob Dunkley. The coach predicted that Granger will be running the offense and needs to play solid defense; Sapienza will have to play tenacious defense as well as score; Colby May, known as versatile, will be rebounding as well as scoring; Jacob Dunkley, the teamÕ s leading rebounder, will have to control the paint on offense and defense; and newcomer Hayden Smith will have to play with intensity on defense and rebound well. Whipple, in his second year as the CougarÕ s coach, concluded that his players will have to play solid defense and rebound aggressively in order to achieve their goals. ÒT he kids have been working very hard in the off season,Ó h e said. ÒE xpectations are high.Ó
Lady Warriors return experience By Thom Randall
thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ The Warriors Girls Basketball team has a lengthy record of success that has extended for decades, winning league and sectional championships with regularity. This past year, they won the Adirondack League Western Division championship, while amassing a record of 16-1 in the league and 18-3 overall. Their only loss was to Fort Edward, which proceeded in postseason to win the title of runner-up in the state tournament.
By Thom Randall
thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN Ñ Three years ago, the North Warren Girls Basketball Team won the Adirondack League Western Division Championship and fought their way well into the Section II tournament, the first time in decades for such an accomplishment. The feat was considerable, considering the school is one of the two in the league with the smallest enrollment. Some sports observers have said that North Warren, despite its shrinking student body, might again be among the top contenders for league leadership. Hearing the prediction this week, Cougar Coach P.J. Hogan, known for his conservative assessment of his teamÕ s prospects, smiled and talked of his teamÕ s strengths. Last yearÕ s team tallied a 10-9 overall record that included a Section II tournament win. Standout athletes from the 2013-14 North Warren squad include Janae Williamson and Nicole Fish. Top returning players for this season are Kerrianne Belline, Ell Underwood, Taylor Feldeisen, Taryn Williamson, Julianna Dewar and Morgan Yarosh. Belline is known to play hard and be a leader
The Lake George team has a wealth of talented veteran players returning for 2014-15. Coach Rob Tefft offered the following comments this week on his lineup: • Mackenzie Bennett, 5’9’’ junior guard is a versatile player; Cora Connolly, 5Õ 11Õ senior guard is a good defender and runs the offense; Lacy Cormie, 5Ó 4Ó sophomore guard is a good perimeter shooter; Nicole Nolin, 5Õ 7Ó sophomore forward is a tough defender and rebounder; Vivian Jaworsky, 5Õ 7Ó senior forward is a very good rebounder; Kayla Prosser, 6Õ senior forward is tough around the basket on both ends of the court; Paige Farrington, 5Õ 3Ó junior guard is a tough defender and good distributor of the ball; Cara Mastropietro, 5Õ 6Ó senior guard is a good defender, and Graceann Bennett, 6Õ -0Ó , 8th Grader, is a tough inside player. Post-Star sportswriter Brett Hudson has said Graceann may be one of
on the court. Underwood gets past opponents with her deceptively quick step as she attacks the basket. Feldeisen is considered a rebounding threat as well as a tough, strong outside player. The squad features a core group who have played together for years Ñ developing chemistry along the way, Hogan said. ÒS olid half court man-to-man defense will likely be a strong suit of ours,Ó h e said. Hogan added that the 2014-15 Varsity squad has drafted players off of the schoolÕ s incredibly successful Junior Varsity team Ñ Madasyn Bush, Cate Hill, Hunter Hitchcock and Toni Agard. ÒT hese players work hard Ñ everyday,Ó Hogan said. These newcomers to Varsity level are already quite experienced in winning. They were key players on the first girl’s sports team in the history of North Warren High School to go undefeated, outscoring their opponents by an average of 20 points over their 17-0 season. Citing North WarrenÕ s height, strength and experience Ñ and the talent of the teamÕ s new players, area sports enthusiasts say North Warren has formidable prospects of ending up among the top in the league. Hogan, however is modest in his prognostication. ÒH opefully weÕ ll be able to match last yearÕ s .500 record in the league,Ó he said. ÒW e need to get better every practice, every game, every day.Ó
the best players in the state within several years. Tefft said this week that his team will be working hard toward their lofty goals, in line with the proud tradition of Lake George girls basketball program. He said that to reach their objectives, the girls would likely be playing an up-tempo style of basketball.

WARRENSBURG Ñ Warrensburg High SchoolÕ s falling enrollment in recent years has presented quite a challenge for its sports teams. The schoolÕ s 2014-15 varsity basketball team, however, may surprise area sports fans with the level of their play, considering what theyÕ ve already accomplished this year. This squad, in their season debut two weeks ago, pulled off a stunning turnaround victory. Powered by a scoring onslaught by junior guard Shea Irish — who scored 24 points in the final quarter, and 39 points overall Ñ the Burghers defeated Johnsburg, a tall and talented team. For 2014-15, the Burghers have experience and substantial depth. Coach Bob Hummel said that the team will be led by four returning starters Ñ Alek Olden, Jake Nemec, Mike Kareglis and Irish — who all made significant contributions last year. The playmaking responsibilities will be shared by point guards Olden and freshman Garry Ross, both of whom possess good ballhandling skills and court vision, Hummel said. Olden is a two-year starter with valuable experience, Hummel said. Ò Olden ran the team last year,Ó he said. Joining these two as guards will be Irish and Markus Moyer Ñ both seniors Ñ and juniors
Josh Porter and Brian Barton, as well as sophomore Joe Turner and freshman Kyle Boland. Irish is likely to be contributing some exciting action on the floor this season — he’s a threeyear starter and a has been recognized as an allstar player by the league and the news media. Undoubtedly, he will not only be scoring, but heÕ ll be grabbing plenty of rebounds, as well as defending opposing teamsÕ best players. Achoring the front court will be juniors Jake Nemec and Mike Kareglis, senior Brian Altman and freshman Will Schwarz, Hummel said. Ò Nemec and Kareglis are two-year starters who provide scoring, rebounding and interior defense,Ó Hummel said. Despite their considerable collective talent, the Burghers have their work cut out for them, as the Adirondack League is stacked with tough, aggressive teams Ñ in 2013, two of them Ñ Lake George and Argyle Ñ each won a state championship in their respective class. Ò If our team can avoid foul trouble and remain healthy, they will be very competitive in the Adirondack League,Ó Hummel said. Sports enthusiasts can trust HummelÕ s assesments. HeÕ s an experienced coach who mentored basketball teams at Queensbury High for 18 years and also served as an assistant coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Ñ and Warrensburg Central administrators have said they are impressed and thankful he has chosen to serve as coach for their school.
Warrensburg wrestlers priming for promising year on mats By Thom Randall
thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG Ñ The Warrensburg High School wrestlers, known to be tenacious and talented, are coming off a successful 201314 season in which they were runner-up in the Section II tournament for their classification. The team lost five leading athletes to graduation: Nick Nedelcu, Denver Berry, Wil Yarmowich, Trevor Baker, and Dan Ackley. They were all 30-plus match winners.
The top returning athletes are the BurghersÕ four seniors Ñ battletested veterans: • Austin West returns to wrestle in the 120-pound weight class, coach Mark Trapasso said this week. Ò West has had a lot of success and we expect a big year for him, Trapasso said. • Lane Oehler will be wrestling in the 145-pound class, the coach continued. Ò Oehler wrestled a lot during the off-season, and heÕ s improved greatly,Ó he said. Oehler was a Section II Class D champion two years ago. • Trapasso said Senior Rogers McLaughlin is back at 182 pounds, contributing team leadership. Ò McLaughlin is constantly pushing himself and his teammates,Ó Trapasso said. • Blake Vaisey, a Section II Class D finalist, returns to handle the Heavyweight class for the Burghers, the coach said, noting Vaisey has considerable experience.
Ò Other than our seniors, this is by far the youngest team we have ever fielded,” Trapasso said, noting the team includes 11 freshman and two 8th graders. • Here’s the Burgher lineup, as of late November: 99 pounds, Trevor Winchell; 106 pounds, Zack Davis; 113 pounds, Aidan LaPoint and Nolan McNeil; 120 pounds, Austin West; 126 pounds, Dan Monthony and Trevor Prosser; 132 pounds, Greg Shambo and Jacob Johnson; 145 pounds, Lane Oehler; 152 pounds, Ryan McNeil; 160 pounds, McKenzie Blydenburgh, Mike Baker and Alex Barber; 170 pounds, Cody Ewald; 182 pounds, Roger McLaughlin and Jack Binder; 195 pounds, Don Carpenter and Ben Ewald; Heavyweight, Blake Vaisey and Gary Hill. Trapasso said his wrestlers are putting in extra hours practicing their moves and working out Ñ showing substantial dedication towards achieving their goals. Ò Our team is working extremely hard,Ó he said, adding that he expects the core group of experienced wrestlers to mentor the many younger ones. Ò With our young kids in the program, our future appears bright Ñ but our seniors know their wrestling future is now.Ó Trapasso said. Ò We are relying on them to lead by example.Ó Trapasso predicted that the squadÕ s hard work will pay off by seasonÕ s end. Ò We expect to be competitive and be in the hunt at sectional time,Ó he said. ABOVE: The 2014-15 Warrensburg Varsity Wrestling team.

Bolton girls ready for challenge By Thom Randall
thom@denpubs.com BOLTON LANDING Ñ Just several weeks ago, Bolton’s girls soccer team finished up a historic, record-shattering season, taking their winning campaign all the way to the Final Four of the state tournament. A number of those talented athletes will now be tossing basketballs towards a hoop rather than kicking soccer balls into a soccer goal. Bolton Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Luke Schweickert said that the experience of winning the league and earning Sectional and regional championships will be valuable in this yearÕ s basketball season as the team faces a number of far-larger schools over the next three months. Ò IÕ m hoping that their taste of success in soccer will create a hunger for them to commit themselves to working hard this season,Ó he said. Ò I told the kids if they truly commit to basketball, they could have a very strong season Ñ but it is up to them.Ó The players have quite a challenge, considering their competition, schools with far higher enrollment. Bolton is a Class D school in sports, the designation for schools with the smallest enrollment. But if there was an Ò EÓ class, Bolton would be in it Ñ and not only due to Excellence Ñ the school has only 52 students in grades 9-11, only one third the number of Warrensburg, which is Class D. Last year, Bolton had considerable talent, and a core group is back, minus key players Molly
Schoder and Kim Wright, as well as forward Olivia Clesceri. Ò They were a very committed and dedicated group of Seniors,Ó Schweickert said. The 201314 team was 6-11 in the league, 7-12 overall and lost in overtime to Hartford in the Sectionals. Top-performing returning players are senior guard Sarah Calzada, junior forward Erin Courchaine, senior forward Kaitlin Urtz and senior forward Olivia Seamans, an area All-Star in several sports. Schweickert praised Calzada and Courchaine for inspiring other players. Sarah and Erin really emerged as leaders this year as they brought many of our younger players to summer league and helped bring out the best in them,Ó he said. Ò They are wise beyond their years, and their impact on younger kids will last long after they graduate.Ó Also, Freshman Maddie Pratt and soccer star Olivia Seamans have played AAU ball, he said. Ò Our team is a very scrappy defensive team that succeeds when everyone is contributing on the defensive end of the floor,” he said, calling the younger players like Sophomore guard Abbie Seamans, and Freshman forward Maddie Pratt the Ò lifebloodÓ of the team. Ò We need contributions from everyone, as we donÕ t have one dominating scorer,Ó he said. Watching the girls practice shooting from the foul line this week, Schweickert said he expects the squad to employ a pressure defense, yet stay out of foul trouble. Instead, he expects them to draw fouls from opposing players. Ò Our players are athletic and aggressive Ñ I expect them to get to the line a lot,Ó he said.

Eagles take on independent schedule thom@denpubs.com BOLTON LANDING Ñ This yearÕ s Bolton Central varsity boys basketball team has a considerable challenge ahead of it, having lost five talented seniors from the 2013-14 squad to graduation Ñ Django Denne, Alex Maxam, Sam Cady, Andy Kirk, and Josh Persons. The remaining players, however, have considerable experience, and their coach Glenn Begly has high expectations. Begly, whoÕ s mentored high school and college teams in the Geneva area, is starting his second year as Varsity Boys Basketball coach for Bolton Central. As an extremely small school Ñ with about onethird the enrollment of some other Class D competitors, the Bolton squad has its work cut
out for it. Last yearÕ s varsity boys basketball team endured too many losses, a tally that didnÕ t reflect the athleticism of the team. However, the 2014-15 season is accompanied by new optimism. The team has height, and its players have a reputation for a good attitude and work ethic as they tackle an independent schedule rather than being limited to playing teams solely
in the Adirondack League. Begly has a reputation for stressing defense as a top priority, and this yearÕ s squad has been listening intently to his instructions. Projected starters are juniors Mike Smith, Josh Curri-Brimhall and Corey Van Auken Ñ the latter two, fairly tall, will likely be pulling down more than their share of rebounds. They are joined by senior Joe Connery, Begly said.

Lady Panthers begin youth movement By Keith Lobdell
keith@denpubs.com CROWN POINT Ñ It may be weird to say a team that lost one player to graduation is going to be young, but so is the case with the Crown Point girls varsity basketball team. The sole graduate, Amanda Wolf, led the Lady Panthers in every major statistical category during its 8-7 campaign in 2013-14 on her way to the Division III MVP award. The Panthers will also be without junior Brittany Foote, who continues to recover from a knee injury suffered early in the soccer season. In 2014-15, head coach Kevin Peters will look to leadership from senior Heather Ryan and junior Logan Harrington. Ò With one senior and one junior our team will be very young this year,Ó Peters said. Ò A lack of experience is a challenge, but a challenge these ladies have been working hard to overcome. Our main focus will be on building strong basketball fundamentals and gaining as much experience as possible. This will boost positive results toward building for our future teams.Ó Peters said the players bring several skills to the team this sea-

son. Ò Our captain, Heather Ryan, is quick to the ball and continues to develop a very nice outside shot,Ó he said. Ò Logan also has a nice outside shot and will tag team between point guard and shooting guard with Heather. Amber DuShane is our main force under the basket, but also an all-around good player. Kenzie Bertsche, Savannah Crammond and Bridget Crowingshield are gaining confidence and have good work habits which will pay dividends as the season progresses. I am very pleased with freshmen Bailey Noel and Christina Simpson, and eighth grader Shawna McIntosh. They are putting in an outstanding effect and are improving every practice on their fundamentals which will pay dividends as they work on becoming solid basketball players.Ó Peters, who will be assisted by Britney Peters, said the key will be to stay positive and be unselfish in order to build a stronger team.

CROWN POINT Ñ T he Crown Point varsity basketball team will look to build off a 2013-14 season with three returning starters who are still underclassmen. ÒW e will be very young this year,Ó c oach Randy Pertak said. The trio of returning starters include junior Kolby Pertak along with sophomores Noah Macey and Chad Stephens. Also returning are senior Jake Mildon along with sophomores Jamie LaDeau and Chance Potter. Ò The three returning starters are going to have to really step-up this year,Ó Pertak said. Ò Mildon, Potter and LaDeau are also going to have to play big roles this year. We are not a very big team, but we have quite a few players that are all around that six-foot mark. They are athletic and we hope that helps to that spark to the team.Ó Pertak said after a 2-14 campaign in 2013-14, there is only one way to go. ÒW e can only get better this year,Ó he said. ÒM acey was a good scorer last year and Pertak and Stephens play good defense and crash the boards really hard. Potter and LaDeau are going to have to step up this year and give some productive minutes.Ó Newcomer Hunter Pertak will handle play calling for the Panthers from the point. ÒH unter is going to be relied on to help play the point guard position,Ó coach Pertak said. ÒH e is young and a little undersized, but he has great ball skills and has a great knowledge of the game. ÒJ acob Norton is going to have to step up and play a big role and give some solid minutes,Ó Pertak added on some of his newcomers. ÒA drian Fernandez will also see time in the back court. We are young and do not have any really big guys, but if they develop as a team, they may be able to surprise a few teams.Ó

PORT HENRY Ñ The goal for the 2014-15 Moriah varsity boys basketball team is simple: return to Glens Falls. The defending Class D and regional champion wants to return to the NYSPHSAA Final Four at the Civic Center, and returns all but one starter from the 2013-14 squad. Ò We are returning nine players from last years team, and have 15 total on the team,Ó head coach Brian Cross said. Ò Our goals are to win Division II and defend our Class D title.Ó The Vikings are led by junior center Adam Jaquish, the defending Division II MVP. Ò Our size will be our biggest strength with seven kids over six-feet tall, and returning four out of five starters from last years team,Ó Cross said. Joining Jaquish as returning starters are Taylor Slattery, Noah Gilbo and Jarrod MacDougal. The team will have depth with 15 players, which Cross said makes practice much more competitive and makes everyone work harder for playing time. Cross said team speed will also be a key to the VikingÕ s success. On the bench, Cross will be assisted by Don Tesar and Randy Mandy.

Lady Vikings prep to defend Class D title By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com
PORT HENRY Ñ The Moriah varsity girls basketball team is ready to go for a three-peat, of sorts. The Lady Vikings, in seeking to defend its Section VII/Class D title, will also be seeking to keep a sectional title streak alive that started with the 2012-13 Class C championship. The team will look to the return of three starters from the championship team, including all stars Madison Stahl and Caitlin Pelkey, and Lauren Cross. Ò We return six players in all from last yearÕ s team and they possess a high basketball intelligence,Ó head coach Steve Pelkey said. Ò There is good senior leadership and these kids enjoy playing together.Ó One concern for Pelkey is depth, with only three newcomers joining the six returning players. However, their goals are to advance past the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse. Ò We will try to repeat as Division II champs and Class D champions,Ó he said.

MORIAH Ñ The Moriah varsity bowling program is looking to play the role of spoilers this season on the lanes. The girls have improved tremendously since last season and the returning boys are going to surprise some teams this season,Ó coach Stacey Anderson said. Ò Our goals are to practice, practice, practice; which will show our Toot strengths and our ability to Whalen succeed.Ó The Vikings have six new boys and two new girls on the roster Ò With practice they will also become stronger and more consistent,Ó Anderson said.

Wildcats seek to stay on top Lady Wildcats seek experience Ò They have been working on building good team chemistry. They know what it takes to be a quality team and this group of seniors has had a successful tenure. They want to be one of the best teams in the league.Ó The team will focus on the experience of their guards along with team speed as part of a successful season, and will look to improve their defense and communication, which Silvernail said will come as the players get used to playing with each other and developing leadership on the team. The coach will look to a trio of players for that leadership, including Tanner Stone, Alex Shaughnessy and Joe Maisonville. Silvernail is assisted by Dawson DeZalia.

SCHROON Ñ The Mountainside Christian Academy boys varsity basketball team will look to play a sound game as they get ready for the 2014-15 season. Ò We want to focus on fundamentals, get back to basics and back to a winning tradition,Ó head coach Paul Mieras said. Ò We need to work on outside shooting, wing play and post play and improve our defensive man-to-man skills.Ó Mieras said the team will be led by senior Chris Bresnahan, who will manage the team from the point. Ò We will have some size, but the most strength will come from the point guard,Ó he said. Ò Chris will take on most of the offensive load and have to bring up the ball. He can see the court well and can distribute the ball, so we hope to see his assists go up as other teams
SCHROON Ñ The Schroon Lake varsity girls basketball team will look to rebuild after losing all but two of their players from the 2013-14 team. Ò The girls have been working hard to improve in many areas on the court,Ó head coach Dawn Martin said. Ò Positions have been changed this year and we are working on improving our skills.Ó Martin said the Lady Vikings have six more players than last year, with some who are new to the game. Ò The new players that have joined the team are also new to the game of basketball,Ó she said. Ò The exciting thing to see, as a coach, is how the upper-classmen and returning players are teaching and encouraging the new players.Ó Two players Martin is asking to lead the squad in 2014-15 are senior Melissa Paris and Corrine Pelkey. Martin said the results can be seen in prac-
tice, as she oftens hears, Ò you can do it,Ó and Ò never let up.Ó For the Vikings, as well, the season is also about remembering their mission as a school. Ò We want to make sure we give all the glory to God whether we win or lose,Ó Martin said. Martin will be assisted by Janet Bresnahan.

Sentinel boys indoor track and field looks to compete By Keith Lobdell
keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ The Ticonderoga boys varsity indoor track and field team will look to remain in the hunt during the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference season while looking to replace three key graduates, including one of the most decorated athletes in school history. “We will be hard press to replace (state and federation champion in the 100 hurdles) Jay Hebert, Skyler Gilbert and Jarryn Granger, but I expect our team to give 100 percent,Ó head coach Walter Thorne said. Despite the losses, Thorne does have a deep squad returning to the Plattsburgh State University Fieldhouse, where the majority of the CVAC indoor schedule is held. Ò We have a good attitude and team balance with 14 returning athletes from last year’s outdoor team and five new members will be our main strength,Ó he said. Ò I expect our boyÕ s team to be competitive and put up a good fight this season. There should be a fierce competition amongst the teams and we hope to surprise some of them.Ó The Distance team will be led by Kody Quigley and John Cook. Sprinters will feature Shawn Silliman, Justyn Granger and Marcus Moser, along with three second year athletes that show a lot of promise in practice. Throwers will be led by Cody Shaner, Devin Alkinburgh and several new comers. Thorne is assisted by Phil Kneller and Jay Wells.

Lady Sentinels bring depth to track, seek experience By Keith Lobdell
keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ With only one loss to graduation from the 2013-14 roster, this seasonÕ s version of the Ticonderoga varsity girls indoor track and field team looks to build into the future. Ò We have better numbers than last year,Ó head coach Walter Thorne said. Ò IÕ m not sure what our strengths are, but we have some very talented girls in our sprints but lack depth in the other discipline, so we will try to build for the future.Ó Thorne said the team needs to gain experience in order to progress the program. Ò We will focus on rebuilding the program up and we certainly need more girls for our distance program,Ó he said. Ò For the past few we have played the role of spoiler in the section and we hope this team will move us into a more competitive role.Ó Those seeking to help lead the team include returning seniors Naomi Forkas (state cross country qualifier), Casey Hargett and Lillth Ida. Thorne is assisted by Phil Kneller and Jay Wells.

Sentinel boys look to reload in 14-15 By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com
TICONDEROGA Ñ The Ticonderoga varsity boys basketball team will look to retool for the 2014-15 season. Ò Right now we are looking to improve in all areas of the game as we got a late start due to the success of the football team,Ó head coach Joe Defayette said. Ò Speed should be an area of strength this year and we hope to use it as much as we can.Ó Only three players return to the Sentinel roster from last seasonÕ s team: Kaleb Wiktorko, Garrison Hughes and Marick Ross. They will be joined by Gavin Wells, Evan Graney, Brett Mosier, Kodi McCoy, Kolby Bradford, Uzi Whitten, Colvin Chapman, Brody Rocque and Domanic Banish. Ò Our success will depend on how the new players adapt and the returning players help lead them,Ó Defayette said. The Sentinels will hope to stay near the top of the Division II and Class C standings, knowing that AuSable Valley, a Division I school in the Northern Basketball League, will be laying in wait come the first week of March. “We would like to make it to the sectional final game,” Defayette said. Ò Then we will see what happens.Ó Defayette will be assisted by JV coach Rick Merrill and modified coach Eric Mullen.
