TICONDEROGA | In the late summer of 2017, Liam Brown had decided to come home. He was struggling with PTSD, and felt that a move from Wisconsin to Ticonderoga would bring him closer to family members Liam Brown felt an overriding who could offer care. “You could see that he was need to serve. Photo provided hurting,” said Katy Rasmus, his younger sister by six years. “He was working through a lot of pain, but we had very high hopes that he was progressing.” Liam’s mom, Claire Brown, owner of Libby’s Bakery in Ticonderoga, drove him to therapy sessions at the VA in Albany, where he was treated for mental trauma. While in therapy, it came to light that he had also suffered a brain injury from an exploding IED while serving in Iraq. » Liam Cont. on pg. 3

EAGLE LAKE | The status of Eagle Lake’s only public boat launch has residents fearful that they may not be able to fish or recreate on the lake in the ways to which they have become accustomed. Eagle Lake falls within the state’s Hammond Pond Wild Forest, a sprawling, tract loosely bordered by Lake Champlain to the east, the Northway to the west, Route 73 to the south and Route 9N to the north between Westport and Elizabethtown.

The area is governed by a Unit Management plant that was adopted in 1988, and narrowly amended twice since. That plan is currently under review of the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which will govern how the land is used in coming decades. Among the proposed changes is a reconf iguration of the Eagle Lake boat launch that allows boaters to back their trailers into the water and f loat their craft off the trailer. Under the proposed changes, that will no longer be allowed. According to the plan, “This site will accommodate the approach to the water’s edge of small and light trailered boats, but will not provide float-off or float-on trailered boat launching.

» Fire Cont. from pg. 1 By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

ELIZABETHTOWN | Community residents, clergy and businesses began the process of recovery, after a mid-afternoon fire the day after New Year’s destroyed the historic Schroon Lake Community Church and heavily damaged the neighboring parsonage in downtown Schroon Lake. The cause of the fire was “definitely accidental,” said Donald Jaquish, director of Essex County Emergency Services. A specific cause will be determined after a meeting of state agencies this week, he said. Photos on social media showed demolition teams working to recover the cross and bell of the church, and several fun-

draising efforts were being coordinated. Following the fire, an impromptu service was held at a neighboring church in which worshipers reminisced about important events in their lives that had occurred in the church. Ashley Berton said she was passing by shortly after 3 p.m., and noticed smoke wafting from the steeple. Shortly after, the wooden church was engulfed in flames. Both buildings were unoccupied at the time of the blaze, and there were no injuries, said Larry Shiell, who was acting chief at the fire. Shiell said the church was in flames when fire firefighters arrived on the scene. The fire quickly spread to the parsonage and Shiell said the main concern became to protect businesses across the street and a large apartment building in back. “We knew the church was lost,” he said. Church members said the structure was built in the 19th

The boat would be pushed/lifted off the trailer, and pushed/rolled off a small, short barrier into the water. The design of these sites may allow the wheels of the trailer to the water’s edge, but prevent floating boats off the trailer.” DEC spokesman Dave Winchell said some people took that to mean the state was preparing to close the boat launch altogether. While the traditional boat launch would be closed, he said, the barrier will have rollers and it will be a relatively easy job to slide “a typical boat with an outboard motor” off the trailer over the rollers and into the water. “I know a lot of people were concerned, but what gets out by word of mouth is usually worse than the reality,” he said. A public hearing was held in North Hudson

in late fall and the boat-launch issue came up, Winchell said, but those raising questions seemed satisfied by the answers. The idea behind restricting trailers is to help prevent the spread of invasives. While larger boats would in effect be restricted, Winchell said the 420-acre lake is not conducive to big boats, particularly those launched from the public site. The launch point is separated from the main lake by a causeway with a narrow overpass that carries Route 73. Residents of Eagle Lake, however, said they are not convinced. “If you have an 18-foot boat with a thousand pounds of equipment, you’re not going to just roll it into the water,” said Rolf Tiedemann, treasurer of the Eagle Lake Home-

century and had recently been restored. “This was not just a church, it was the center of town,” said Diane Leah, who featured the church on a historic walking town she had written on Schroon Lake. “This is a great loss to everyone in this town.” Leah said firefighters worked heroically to save other buildings in town and could have been catastrophic had it jumped the street. “Kudos to the fire department, they did a great job of keeping it contained,” she said. Schroon Supervisor Mike Marnell said the building got lots of use, its basement a popular gathering spot for suppers and events. He said parts of the church had been moved to its present location in the middle of the last century. No cause of the fire has been determined. Shiell said nine departments were called in to fight the fire. ■

FAREWELL CELEBRATION: A special Mass to celebrate the

nearly seven year service of Father Kevin McKeown will be held at St. Mary’s Parish in Ticonderoga Friday, Jan. 18 at 9 a.m. before he leaves on Jan. 23. A reception will follow at St. Mary’s School. All are invited to attend and refreshments will be served. Photo provided

owners Association. “Most people don’t fish out of an innertube.” Tiedemann said he has a long track record of fighting invasives and is sensitive to the environment. But he fears some restrictions now could lead to more later, even the restrictions of motors on the lake altogether. “It’s a beautiful piece of land and we have stewardship of it,” he said. “But it’s a slippery slope. I would guess a majority of the property owners are against doing anything at the boat launch.” He is also concerned about emergencies on the back side of the lake, which are difficult to access without a boat. Dick Holroyd, who has logged many hours fishing on Eagle Lake, said residents were also concerned that they didn’t get more

notice of the fall public meeting. Like other residents, he said he was surprised to learn that changes were planned for the boat launch, which he said could make it more difficult for aging anglers with medical issues. “Everybody I talked to was totally shocked about the whole thing,” he said. “And what do you think will happen to property values if there’s no way to launch a boat?” he said. Winchell said the DEC comment period is over, but the UMP revisions will now go to the Adirondack Park Agency, which will have its own comment period. The UMP materials can be found online at https://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/51337.html. Questions about the UMP process can be directed to r5.ump@dec.ny.gov. ■

MUSIC AND AN URGE TO HELP

THE SEARCH FOR SOMETHING POSITIVE

Katy remembers Liam’s quirky humor, his smile and laughing blue eyes. A photo on her Facebook page shows a happy time from 2010 as the two sit on a couch sharing a laugh and a sip of wine. “He had a beautiful smile,” she said. “He wanted to help more than anything. He was empathetic toward other people’s problems that society could not see. He saw others who had been cast aside, and he wanted to protect them.” Katy too wants her brother’s life to have meaning, and believes this could a be a wake-up call for the community. “I have felt an overwhelming feeling of love; I can’t tell you the number of people who have come forward with compassion,” she said. “The best way to honor him is to take his loss and turn it into something positive. “I just wish life had been gentler to him.” ■

Liam’s passion was his music, but an intense desire to help where help was needed most sent him into the Army’s chemical battalion, said his father Bill Brown, who never quite mastered his son’s recent name change from Bill to Liam. Serving in Iraq in the Second Gulf War, the battalion saw combat at its worst. “They saw more than any 22 year old should see,” Bill said. “He went through some unspeakable stuff.” On his return home on military disability, it was Liam’s music that helped get him through. He wrote his own compositions and caught on with local churches in need of an organist. The night he died, he was to get together with a fellow musician, but plans were changed. Instead, he crossed paths with more sinister actors. Along with his music, Liam clung to his strong desire to help others in need. His own misfortunes had only intensified his urge to help, Katy said. Life had dealt him some devastating cards, so he gravitated toward others who were battling their own demons. Bill, speaking about his son with his current wife Angela, said “he mentioned more than once that he wanted to make a difference. Public service must have helped him, it gave him a sense of accomplishment.” But it also put him on a collision course with the world of addictions, where some were desperate to change their lives, but

Angela said awareness of the problem is the first step, followed by education and then prevention and treatment, along with support. “Thousands of people have reached out to us,” she said, giving the family hope that the town is ready to acknowledge and face the problem.

19-0527

others with more criminal backgrounds lurked in the weeds. Liam’s alleged killer, Michael LaRock, had a criminal history that included narcotics. Police have not said if drugs played a part in the tragedy, but Bill and Angela said it brought to the fore a growing but frequently unmentioned problem in Ticonderoga. Liam’s murder, Angela said, exposed something that needed to be exposed. “There are a lot of angry people out there who wonder how something like this could happen in Ticonderoga,” she said. Liam had an open door policy for those with addiction problems without concern for his own safety. He had faced down the most vile forces overseas, Katy said, and despite his troubles he knew how to take care of himself. “I knew he was helping people, but it never for a second occurred to me that it could lead to a situation that was unsafe,” she said. And if anyone in town sense the danger, they didn’t speak out. Yet the drug problem is not entirely a surprise. Police have reported that needles pile up along the LaChute promenade and outside the town library where users late at night had patched into the building’s wifi signal. More people lock their doors and are careful about where their children play, Bill said. Unless something happens to change the tide, he feels it will only get worse. But with Liam’s death, something might now be different.

19-0527

The damage Liam suffered while serving overseas had created distance between Katy and her brother. They’d been close growing up in New Hampshire. Liam had been given a keyboard and as Katy knitted mittens as part of a confirmation project, he pounded out music to the click of her needles. In recent months, they would exchange a few sibling jousts when Liam would come in to see his mom and grab some coffee, but it was clearly a time that called for patience. Claire, Katy said, was seeing signs of hope. “She said he seemed to be settling into himself more,” she said. There was no indication of what was to happen next. Late on a Thursday night in December, police say a felon with a lengthy rap sheet, who legally should not have been in possession of a gun, shot Liam in the head. With two alleged accomplices, he wrapped Liam’s body in trash bags and drove in two cars, one of them Liam’s, to Bicentennial Park and pushed the body into the LaChute River. It was 10 days before Christmas.

Moriah Chamber seeks new members Officials say new stores, residents improving local economy By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

PORT HENRY | The high cost of living in Vermont has sent some people packing for the Western shores of Lake Champlain, which Moriah Chamber of Commerce President Renee Anderson believes has contributed to an uptick in commercial activity in and around Port Henry. That’s good news as the chamber kicks off its annual membership drive, recruiting individuals and businesses to participate in activities that help expand the local economy. Anderson, owner of Little Champs Daycare, said the chamber had a good year in 2018, and that she’s optimistic about 2019 as well. “I personally see a lot of the activity with daycare,” she said. “I’ve seen the population

expanding because of Vermonters coming here.” Added to the local base, that means more shoppers for Port Henry stores. Two stores that recently opened — Threads, a used clothing store featuring name merchandise, and Oddities n Herbs, which specializes in healing stones — have become destinations based on their unique inventories, she said. “This is a nice little hamlet; it’s slowly expanding and I see it getting bigger,” Anderson said. “I would love to see the storefronts on Main Street be filled — that’s a priority for us.” A number of benefits come with chamber membership, Anderson said. Special events are promoted on the chamber Facebook page, business services are offered at the chamber’s downtown location and members get 10 percent off at the chamber store. The chamber website also has a membership directory and members receive visitor referrals and networking opportunities. Each year the chamber sponsors a number of events, including Champ Day and Labor Day festivities. This year, the chamber hopes to increase membership by 25 percent, develop a new website and host monthly mixers and meetings where businesses are encouraged to share

DeZalia named North Hudson supervisor Former board member will take over from retiring Supervisor Ronald Moore By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

NORTH HUDSON | North Hudson Town Board Member Stephanie DeZalia was sworn in as the town’s new supervisor last Wednesday to fill out the unexpired term of Ronald Moore, who has retired. “After you’ve done this job for a while, when you leave, it’s a lot harder than you think,” Moore told DeZalia during a small ceremony at the board offices. “So I’m very appreciative that we have someone like you to take the helm.” One more year remains in Moore’s term. DeZalia said she will run for supervisor this November for the full term beginning in 2020. The board is expected to name someone to fill her unexpired board term during its regular meeting on Jan. 15. DeZalia will be the first woman to sit on the board since 2013, when four female lawmakers lost their bids for reelection. The first women in Essex County to be elected supervisor were Mildred Dobie of North Hudson and Florence Hathaway of Willsboro, both of whom were elected in 1980, according to the county clerk’s office. DeZalia grew up in Schroon Lake and moved to North

Stephanie DeZalia, center, is sworn in as the new North Hudson supervisor. Photo by Tim Rowland Hudson in 1992, where she raised her family. She has worked the last 15 years at the Essex County Clerk’s office as a Principal Recording Clerk, and as Pistol Permit Clerk since 2013. Prior to working for the county, she spent 11 years as a department manager for Curtis Lumber in Schroon Lake, and a year and a half as proofreader and department manager for The Sun Community News. This past August, DeZalia started her own business as a Mary Kay beauty consultant which she will continue to do while working as supervisor. “I had always contemplated running for supervisor, but the timing hadn’t been right,” she said. Now, with her children grown, she will have the time to devote to public service. DeZalia said it’s an exciting time for North Hudson, with the redevelopment of Frontier Town into a multi-use

destination. She remembers going to the first iteration of Frontier Town as a child, when it was a western theme park, and is enthusiastic about its rebirth. The state is developing a campground with trails and equestrian facilities, and Paradox Brewery is building a new facility expected to be open later this year. “I hope when they come in others will see the area as an opportunity,” DeZalia said. She said North Hudson is rife with recreational opportunities, many of which are unrecognized by outdoor enthusiasts who gravitate to the High Peaks. But with its hiking, biking and boating opportunities, DeZalia believes North Hudson can help ease some of the congestion in the Route 73 corridor while becoming a destination in its own right, capable of supporting an outfitter or hotel. In a brief special meeting, board member Robert Dobie said it was “an honor and a privilege” to nominate DeZalia for the job, and the vote was unanimous. DeZalia thanked Moore for his service, saying he had left an “indelible mark” on the town, with many accomplishments to his credit over the past seven years. With the issues of Frontier Town and the Boreas Ponds area about to take off, Moore said he thought it best to step down early to give the new supervisor an added sense of continuity in what promises to be a busy era for North Hudson. ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

Time for an intervention

In any form of business partnership, once the raw opposing opinions are aired, the anger By Dan Alexander grows more derog• PUBLISHER • atory, cutting deep into the once fruitful partnership and both sides begin competing against each other instead of working together, there can only be a few options to put things back the way they once were. Both parties must agree to cease the behavior that has created the ongoing rift and consider seeking outside counseling. If that is not an option, then either one party or the other agrees to leave the partnership or both parties agree to dissolve the partnership. Like a marriage, no relationship can withstand the distrust, lying, misleading, argumentative and consistent inability to function. But what happens when the two partners are the executive and legislative branches of our government? Who will step up? When will the discourse that is stifling our nation in so many areas come to end? With both sides digging in their heels, it’s hard to imagine that cooler heads will prevail anytime in the foreseeable future. The only thing that does seem predictable at this point is that the situation will only continue to get worse. More anger, greater incivility and an increase in radical positions from the right and left will cause even further splintering. Our country is better than this. There is far too much on the line to allow ourselves to watch the government continue to spiral down in this divisive manner. As citizens, despite which side you favor, we must come together and demand that both sides put their differences and political aspirations aside and begin taking action to address the issues facing the nation. Solving the problems of our nation should be far more important than whose idea it was or who gets credit or blame for the action taken. Additionally, the national media must move toward balanced reporting. They are as much to blame for the divisiveness in this country. It’s no fun watching a sporting event when the announcers are openly rooting for one team while putting down the other. They must look at their role and put their own corporate motives aside if they are to be taken as serious impartial judges. Maybe 2019 will be the year that those who govern our country will start to act like adults and compromise the way our founders intended. ■

The Sun Editorial

Broadband reforms welcome, but public must remain vigilant Scores of Frontier subscribers have reached out to the Sun over the past two years to detail concerns over sputtering broadband and phone service. Subscribers have been plagued by extended outages. When the service is operational, speed tests reveal subscribers are receiving nowhere near the service they have been paying for. In painstaking detail, our readers have documented speed tests, interactions with customer service representatives and the deteriorating state of infrastructure on the ground in their communities. These reports constitute a patchwork of discontent running from Wilmington to Keeseville down to North Creek and deep into the central Adirondacks to communities like Long Lake. Resident concerns nearly boiled over at a public forum last February in North Creek designed to brief attendees on state-funded broadband expansion efforts. Again and again, we heard the same refrain: Nothing can be done. There’s no use. We’re fed up. But something has been done. Relief is now in sight as a probe by the New York state Attorney General’s Office into the state’s leading internet providers has not only validated and confirmed these long-standing complaints, but revealed “significant failures” in how the companies have marketed and delivered internet speeds. The result is what the state attorney general says will be a “transformative” deal that will change how broadband speeds are marketed nationwide. The providers — Altice, Frontier, RCN and Verizon — have agreed to numerous

Screening for cervical cancer saves lives

To the Editor: January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and the Cancer Services Program (CSP) of Northeastern NY wants to raise awareness that there are two ways to prevent cervical cancer. One way is through regular screening. Cervical cancer screening tests can find the cells that lead to cancer before it starts. These cells can then be removed. Screening also helps to find cancer early when it is most easily treated. If you do not have insurance, the Cancer Services Program may be able to help. We offer free cervical cancer screening to

provisions designed to clamp down on misleading advertising. They must substantiate speed claims with regular speed testing, ensure sufficient network capacity to deliver advertised content, and disclose the factors that might lead user experience to vary, including the number of users and device limitations. And the companies must discontinue any speed that cannot be substantiated, among other reforms. Frontier will also be required to invest $25 million in unsubsidized areas, although details are still forthcoming. Charter Spectrum agreed to identical measures, but only after getting slapped with a $174 million consumer fraud settlement last December, the largest-ever payout by a internet service provider in U.S. history. These changes are good news, but we’re not naive to think they would have happened without constant pressure from the public and local officials. Constant vigilance will be necessary. The providers have 120 days to implement the changes. We want to hear from you if they don’t. And it’s not enough to drop us a line if you continue to be fleeced by these providers. Subscribers must continue to ensure their complaints are funneled to the appropriate place, including the New York state Attorney General’s Office and Public Service Commission, and exercise their rights as consumers to hold these tech companies accountable. We’d be remiss if we didn’t note concerns about the state’s broadband program continue to bubble underneath the surface, particularly considering the 2018 deadline for concluding the universal effort, once proudly trumpeted, has quietly passed.

We encourage local lawmakers to develop a systemic structure to capture and direct all telecommunications-related concerns to the appropriate channels. The Essex County Board of Supervisors has created a broadband task force. Good start. And as questions percolate elsewhere, their colleagues across the region, from Franklin to Washington counties, should do the same thing with the ultimate goal of developing an effective regional infrastructure. Broadband, of course, isn’t a luxury, but rather a necessary tool to close gaps in economic inequality and educational achievement in our rural communities. Unfortunately, many readers have told us they’re considering selling their homes because of telecommunications issues. Or they would stay longer at seasonal residences if only afforded the proper online infrastructure that would allow them to work remotely. It shouldn’t have to be this way. Thankfully, progress continues on other fronts to augment state efforts. Microsoft is partnering with local providers using new technology like TV white spaces to bridge the rural broadband divide, including a project estimated to serve 300 Essex County residents. Federal grants are out there, but local officials continue to probe how they fit into state efforts. So for most of us, the state-funded efforts — as well as the state-ordered improvements to private providers like Charter Spectrum, Frontier and Verizon — mark the end of the line when it comes to bridging that gap. Let’s keep the pressure on to ensure we see these efforts through to completion and that no one is left behind. ■

to the editor concerning the Minerva-Newcomb sports program may have left your readers with the sense that the administration and school board of Minerva Central School are a group of selfish monsters who care only about a winning team. Having known and worked with these folks for many years, I can say with certainty that nothing is further from the truth. Lamphear’s comments alleging discrimination towards the international students by the school board president, Michael Corey, are particularly perplexing to me. Clearly, she is unaware of who Corey is and what he really stands for. For the record, Corey has served as the host dad for 15 international students since 2007.

» Letters Cont. from pg. 6 All but one played one or more team sports. A few were standout athletes. Many had never played team sports before. They did so with the encouragement and support of Corey. He has also strongly encouraged our local kids to participate in team sports — regardless of their natural athletic ability. I was the host mom to these same international students. We love all of our kids from Columbia, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Spain and Liberia and have traveled all over creation to attend their games and get them to practices. We cheered them whether they won or lost. And in some seasons, the team lost every game and we supported them through the frustration of losing. We talked about what they learned and how important their team was. Winning may not be the only thing, or even the most important thing, but it matters to our international kids as it does to our local athletes. Building the belief and confidence that winning is possible matters. Maintaining team sports opportunities for our kids (both international and domestic) will get more difficult in the coming years due to the declining enrollments and fewer kids participating in team sports. I’m surprised that with this challenging discussion that Newcomb does not have appeared to have reached out directly to Johnsburg or to Long Lake which is several miles closer to Newcomb than Minerva. Why not? - Sue Montgomery Corey, Minerva ■

Immigration not just a federal problem

To the Editor: For months, immigration has preoccupied the nation. The current crop of 5,000-6,000 Central American asylum seekers is now viewed as a national problem, yet the moment that wave of immigrant wannabees enters the U.S. it becomes a local problem if the federal government accedes to their demands merely recording their names and handing them a road map. Spread across the whole southwest, they could be assimilated without much notice.

But suppose all or most of them choose to live in El Paso or San Diego and as a group they choose a public or private site to build shacks, toilets and drainage. When a public or private landowner objects, will the feds ride to the rescue? I suggest that the answer is “no” and it becomes a local problem. If the immigrants all choose a small city like Las Cruces, New Mexico, it will create a crisis. Sanctuary cities and states have shown a lack of will to cooperate with the federal government on immigration and now allow the homeless to occupy municipal parks and such. If cities and states will not protect their own property, who will protect private property and public peace? Woe to the private individual, whose property is co-opted by strangers. American Indians own or control many thousands of sparsely populated lands in the Southwest. Will the 21st century immigrants gathered near these lands treat the American Indians like the 17th century immigrants treated the American Indians’ forebears? - James P. Dawson, Elizabethtown ■

Letters should state fact — not inaccuracies

Editor’s note: This letter is in response to Terry Hurlburt’s letter titled, “Disagrees with ‘prestige’ accusation,” which appeared in the Jan. 5 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: I take issue with the letter from Terry K. Hurlburt in your current issue of The Sun. The letter concludes that David ThomasTrain’s claim about 97 percent of scientists was “most likely 97 percent of the paid shills pretending to be ‘scientists’ like Bill Nye.” That statement is irresponsible and dead wrong. In fact, they are professional climate scientists who volunteer their expertise at least every seven years to prepare thorough update reports about our planet’s health for the UN’s IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control). Contrary to Hurlburt’s assertion, they do indeed provide plenty of “scientific proof ” that climate change is man made and a serious threat to our planet. I ask The Sun not to publish grossly ir-

responsible, inaccurate letters. By doing so, you contribute to the negative impression that the media is “fake news.” To your credit, you also published a superb lead article about acid rain and climate change in your Dec. 22 issue, titled “Warming Waters.” My only critique concerns the statement “So far this century, the occasional, extra-hot years…” What?! In fact, according to solid evidence, “Twenty of the warmest years on record were in the past 22 years.” And that is a fact, not a vague opinion from someone who just wants to shoot the messenger because he doesn’t like the news. - Allen Fitz-Gerald, Jay ■

Welcomes alternative energy

Editor’s note: This letter is in response to Luke Dailey’s letter, “Wind and solar development would ‘scar’ Adirondacks” which appeared in the Dec. 8 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: I would like to respond to Luke Dailey’s letter to the editor in the Dec. 8 issue of The Sun. Dailey stated, “Urge your local government to adopt a moratorium on wind and solar development to allow them time to research and create laws that will protect you from many negative health, environmental and economic impacts.” Would Dailey enlighten us by stating what these negative impacts are? I know of no negative health, environmental or economic impacts, but I can see many positives in alternative energy. Wouldn’t it be nice to lower carbon emissions? Acid rain is killing much of our aquatic life and the seedlings of several species of trees. Wind and solar energy are the only two non-polluting forms of energy. We worry about climate change caused by excess carbon in our atmosphere, yet Dailey doesn’t want to do anything about it. He just plants his feet firmly and says, “I can’t say why, but I’m against it.” I doubt that the state is trying to sneak anything through the back door, and our local governments have the power to review any issue that concerns their area. Hatred comes from lack of education

Editor’s note: This letter is in response to Dan Alexander’s column, “Thoughts from Behind the Pressline: Love ‘em or hate ‘em,” which ran in the Dec. 29 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: I read your opinion on “Love ‘em or hate ‘em” in the Dec. 29 issue. You’ve pointed out all the problems of the country and even the source of our problem, hatred. Where does this hatred come from? The first answer, is lack of education. For the last 50 years, our education system has transformed itself into indoctrination not education. What allowed this? Man! There are many steps. The final step was the removal of the ultimate standard, God’s word, as our guide. Hatred is sin, but we have to be politically correct and even this letter will be deemed as hate speech. How do you craft truth to avoid offense? You deviate from God’s standard and lie. I’m sure to object to your opinion of a gal in the big White House would offend you, but if you go to the original standard you might see that does not seem to fit the standard we should follow. When man views himself smarter than his maker, the result is exactly what we see happening today. The Bible tells us in Genesis God was displeased with man and so he sent judgment. It also tells us he is still in control and judgment is the final end of this age. It seems to me, we should all try to repent and follow his teaching. Man is heading down the road of self-destruction. Let’s at least educate our children to truth of God, not truth of man. Looking to the past could do much to correct the problems we are facing. However, man is prideful and therefore not smart enough to change his ways even when they are wrong and pointed out to him. Cheer up. God still loves you, but time is getting short! - Carl Thomas, Stony Creek ■

Sun Community News updates now available on Alexa devices ELIZABETHTOWN | Alexa users can enable Sun Community News in their daily flash briefings so that they can receive a summary of the day’s local headlines. Alexa flash briefings offer one additional way of sharing news and information with the local community. Sun Community News & Printing’s team of reporters develop stories every day. Stories may offer general news and information, while others may share breaking news that is delivered on a more immediate basis. Amazon’s Alexa device allows people to bring these headlines directly into their homes. Sun Community News Managing Editor Pete DeMola is excited that the headlines, which are updated throughout the day as stories are published, are brought into peoples’ homes through this technology. “We offer news in the printed version of the papers, on the website, on social media, on our billboard in Plattsburgh and now, directly into homes on Alexa devices,” he said.

“We take our commitment to sharing local community-based news and information very seriously. Alexa gives us another way to share that information with the community.” General Manager Dan (DJ) Alexander developed the flash briefing skill so that local users could access Sun Community News content on their Alexa devices. “We registered the organization with Amazon’s Alexa, developed the technical aspects required, offered information about our news organization and were approved by Amazon,” he said. “We are really thrilled about being a part of this technology. It offers another example of our dedication to delivering our local content digitally, in addition to the traditional print version.” To enable your device to play The Sun’s flash briefing, you can say: “Alexa, enable Sun Community News Flash Briefing.” Then try it out by saying, “Alexa, what’s in the news?” or “Alexa, what’s my flash briefing?” Devices also can be enabled and various
