Moriah sets deadline for building demo Work could begin on July 13 if owner does not respond. By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER
PORT HENRY | The Town of Moriah has given the owner of the fire-gutted Adirondack Community Works building in the heart of the downtown until July 12 to demolish what remains of the structure. If the deadline isn’t met, the town will contract to tear down the brick shell and assign the costs to the owner’s tax bill. The town got the go-ahead to take charge of the work last week when Judge Glen T. Bruening ruled that the owner, Greg Cunningham, has had a reasonable amount of time to either tear the building down or shore it up following the April fi re. He also said the safety threat is well-documented, and that “the town should be free to very quickly step in.” The decision was “an excellent result, (and) what we were looking for,” said the town’s attorney John Silvestri. Following the hearing, the town called a special meeting Monday evening, at which point it unanimously voted in favor of the July 12 ultimatum. » Building Cont. on pg. 7

Legislation remains elusive despite GOP control of House By Pete DeMola EDITOR
QUEENSBURY | The GOP-led House rejected a compromise immigration bill last
Wednesday, marking the latest setback in Congress’ inability to cobble together a longterm legislative fi x. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) voted for the legislation, which was defeated 301-121. “I was disappointed that the bill failed,” said Stefanik. The compromise fi x included $25 billion of appropriations for President Trump’s border wall as well as technology upgrades, modernization of ports of entry, as well as a pathway to citizenship for Deferred Action for Child-
hood Arrivals recipients. “We’re looking at all options,” Stefanik told reporters following in event in Queensbury last Friday. “I think the key here, ‘How can we get something done?’ So obviously that compromise bill was disappointing in my experience.” President Trump signed a executive order last month ending the administration’s family separation policy, and a federal judge in California issued a injunction last week ordering children to be reunited with their families within 30 days. » Immigration Cont. on pg. 9

for a grain-free granola, or a cowboy craving a big honking steak, the Ticonderoga Natural Foods Co-op in its new location on Montcalm Street can help discerning shoppers scratch items both common and exotic off their grocery lists. But food is only part of the co-op’s recipe for a healthier community. Co-op manager Penny Monjeau said the store also helps support local producers, and is part of a dedicated core of store-owners seeking to revitalize the downtown business district. » Ti co-op Cont. on pg. 7
