Ti Kiwanis donates medical bags Pediatric equipment will help EMS calls involving children By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER
TICONDEROGA | When an ambulance call involves a child, it presents a unique set of problems. Not only is it emotionally difficult, even for seasoned medics, the equipment is generally designed for adults. To help, the Ticonderoga Kiwanis has donated two medical bags specifically designed for children, right down to a comforting teddy bear. The bags, which cost $1,000 each, were donated to the Ticonderoga Emergency Medical Squad during a lunch meeting this month. “Pediatric calls are the worst possible calls we get,” said ambulance board member Dave Woods. “Anything that helps is great.” Eddy Foundation member Tricia Bhatia inspects Parch Pond, about 1.5 miles from Ensign Pond Road.

MORIAH APPROVES PARCH POND SALE
Conservation group wants to sell 850 acres to state By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

PORT HENRY | The Town of Moriah has endorsed a local land trust’s quest to sell 850 acres of land off Ensign Pond Road known as the Parch Pond tract to the state, a move that would nearly double the amount of tax revenue the town receives from the property. The tract is owned by the Eddy Foundation, a Westport land conservation group. It includes a cozy lake ringed by forests and mountain
views, and a flank of 200-foot cliffs known as the Broughton Ledges that have not been routinely climbed in decades, but include what experienced mountaineers consider some of the Adirondacks’ more challenging climbing. Eddy spokeswoman Tricia Bhatia told the Moriah town board this month that the property would be a natural complement to the state’s new Frontier Town campground 12 miles away. The state has not yet agreed to buy the property, but if it does, it would benefit the town coffers. Eddy pays about $9,000 in town and school taxes on the property, which is enrolled in the state’s 480-a program, which offers a tax break to managed forests. The state, if it purchases the land, would pay full freight, or more than $16,000, said Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava. See PARCH POND » pg. 9

They played in the Crown Point Memorial Day Parade, the July 4 parade in Ticonderoga and “wherever else we are called upon,” she said. They will put on a concert — The Echo Continues; An Evening of Military Music — on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Bicentennial Park gazebo at 6:30 p.m. “It’s our official debut concert,” Lerman said. “We wanted to play for the community and let everybody know we’re here.” Along w ith Lerman and Yaw, the musicians — three on fife, three on drum — include John Lawson, Todd Bessett, Juliane Davis and Justin Potter. The group is also hoping that other fife and drum alumni from the fort will learn about the group and want to join. They can contact the corps at firstnyalumni@gmail.com. “We were a pretty tight-knit group,” Yaw said. “There were a lot of dedicated people who really got into it.” Lerman said she was attracted to the music as a girl growing up in Ti. “I’d hear that bass drum coming in the distance and my little heart would get so excited,” she said. She believes others felt the same way and hopes the group can grow and acquire uniforms for their performances. The more members the better,” Lerman said. “We’re hoping to recapture the magic.” Fife and drum groups across the country have done just that. “It’s an addiction,” she

TICONDEROGA | A group of current and former Ticonderoga are getting the band back together — but not in the traditional sense. As high school students, they played for the Fort Ticonderoga Fife and Drum Corps, a pursuit they loved but had to leave when their ages were no longer historically accurate. Adam Yaw, who is a contractor today, said the corps dated back to the 1970s when it was founded to represent the First New York Regiment. For colonial fife and drum units it wasn’t just about the music, the sound was used to signal battle instructions in the field. “It was basically the sound system of the regiment,” he said. But the modern incarnation of the corps enjoyed entertaining, and through the years many maintained friendships they had made at the fort. Shaundra Lerman, of Saratoga Springs, said a handful of members stayed in touch and attended a reunion of musicians. “I thought, wouldn’t it be fun to do this every year,” she said. No longer connected with the fort, they

Ti recording artist releases second album Ashley Sofia’s ‘Shades of Blue’ influenced by home and road By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER
TICONDEROGA | Unsettled times often make the best art; just ask Charles Dickens. But singer-songwriter Ashley Sofia has found that the reverse can be true as well, in her new release “Shades of Blue.” More settled in her personal life, she sings that she no longer “needs to go out and paint the town,” and her laments are drawn not from broken relationships, but from being on the road away from hearth and home. Not that this means she’s lost an edge. She can still MaryChapin-Carpenter with the best of them, as she does in the snappy “That Girl is a Rainbow,” when it comes to women scorned. But more often, her inner peace has allowed her to explore the world around, and stand up for those who might be having a bad day. A native of Ticonderoga, Sofia — who now lives and records in Nashville — also pays tribute to her home in “Adirondack Dreams” and sings of missed loved ones in “Winter Prayer.” This is her second album, which comes five years after her debut. “I wrote the song “Adirondack Dreams” to pay homage to the mountains that raised me,” she said. “The landscape and the people in that hamlet shaped me more than any other
experience of my life. I was so homesick when I came to Nashville. I kept having dreams of being home in the woods. I knew I needed to tip my cap to the place that made me.” Sofia said her strong, soulful lyrics were developed at the knee of her dad, Bill Polihronakis, as he was learning songs to sing at local hangouts. She would look up the words to songs by Jim Croce, Simon and Garfunkle and the Eagles, and they dovetailed naturally with her own literary bent. “I grew up writing poetry,” she said. “I had books and books full of poems, keeping track of my own thoughts and trying to make sense of them.” She said her new album is “the story of a person who is no longer so introspective.” The track “Battlewounds,” asks us to be slow to judge others whose behavior may be due to circumstances beyond their control. Her work seems an antidote to today’s politically charged climate, both in words and tone, including the cautiously optimistic “Looking for America,” which suggests that things won’t always be so grim. Sofia sets her lyrics to lilting, spare melodies sung in a personal, almost conversational style. They are stories told over a craft beer, and perhaps even a classic novel. One relationship she sings of kindles over a worn copy of “The Great Gatsby” — take that, match.com. Most have a “we’ve all been there” quality that lends authenticity, including “Tangerine and Blue,” a bittersweet piece about leaving a boy who is special, yet not quite the right one. Sofia said she was in college when friends began telling her that her music needed to be more than a hobby. They were

right, although Sofia said she had trouble believing it at first. “I had imposter syndrome,” she said. “I thought, people are paying me to do the job that I love? That’s crazy.” She got airplay from Chris Weink on 97.7 WEXT, and soon, instead of playing to a handful of friends in a bar, Sofia was playing to sold out shows. “I had just been writing for myself,” she said. “I don’t think I ever dared to imagine that it would turn into what it’s become.” “Shades of Blue” is available on popular streaming platforms and through Sofia’s website at ashleysofia.com. ■

Destructive fire had some positive outcomes
Founders Day
Schroon Lake Self Storage P.O. Box 100 ,Schroon Lake , NY 12870 518-532-7933
Gloomy weather couldn’t dampen the spir it s of Chilsonites (and Elsewhereites) as they met for this year’s Chilson Founders Day Pig Roast. Despite running out of sour cream (blame it on the weather), there were no complaints.
Pastor Scott Tyler from the Ticonderoga United Methodist Church stands with Sister Sharon at her 50th Jubilee Celebration. After a suspicious fire destroyed St. Mary’s School in 2014, Tyler and his congregation stepped up and offered the use of their space so St. Mary’s could continue to operate while being rebuilt, demonstrating how some strong friendships were forged in the flames of the 2014 fire. Lost Pond is part of the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness. The directions are from Interstate-87 Exit 28, take New York Route 74 East to the Putnam Pond State Campground Road. Turn right (left if coming from Ticonderoga) and follow road for about 3.3 miles, reaching the Lost Pond Trailhead parking area on the right prior to the entrance to the campground. The GPS coordinates of the parking area are N43 50.435 W73 33.517. There is a DEC sign near the entrance to the parking area. The registration fee for the Harvest Hike is $5, those under age 17 are free; hikers can register at champlainareatrails. com/our-events/ or by using this link: app.etapestry.com/ onlineforms/ChamplainAreaTrails/interpretivehikes-1.html. WESTPORT/TICONDEROGA | Champlain Area Trails (CATS) will hold the Ticonderoga Fall Fest Hike at Lost Pond, Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Hikers can hike in the morning and still have plenty of time to take in the fall-themed events for all ages at the second annual Fall Fest in Ticonderoga. This is an easy hike at a beautiful time a year. It’s 1.4 miles
through open hemlock forest to a serene lake. Hikers then have the option to hike around the pond, which adds about another mile, or return back to the parking area. On one side of the lake the trail goes through a deciduous forest, while the other is a little rougher with rocks on the trail. If the full route is selected, the round trip will be about 2.8 miles, and take about three hours.

KOC supports High Peaks Hospice PORT HENRY | The Port Henry Knights of Columbus Council 384 donated $1,000 to the High Peaks Hospice — funds raised at their annual turkey dinner in August. The event was chaired by Nappy Marcotte, a graduate of High Peaks Hospice. In addition, Council 384 donated space in their facility to High Peaks Hospice for its silent auction held Aug. 25. “The silent auction was very well organized and supported by items donated from as far away as Tupper Lake, Lake Placid, Keene, Port Henry and Ticonderoga,” said George Carta, volunteer and attendee. “It was an impressive display of support for our mission. High Peaks Hospice appreciates the continued support from KOC 384 in Port Henry.” For more information about the KOC, visit kofc.org, and for more information about the High Peaks Hospice, visit highpeakshospice.org. ■

vote FARRELLY ezzo
ticonderoga superintendent of highways
My name is Farrelly Ezzo and I am running as a write-in candidate for Ticonderoga’s Superintendent of Highways. I am a lifelong resident of Ticonderoga and worked for the Highway Department for 35 years. I was the deputy for part of my employment which required me to take charge in the absence of the Superintendent. I retired four years ago but since then I have not been happy with the direction that the department has gone. I feel that my years of experience and knowledge of our highway system would be beneficial to the town of Ticonderoga and its citizens. I would like the opportunity to serve my hometown and make a difference. Write in for change, write in for experience! I am asking for voter support on Election Day, November 5th. For more information please check out my page on Facebook, “Write-in Farrelly for Highway Super.”

Sweethearts and Heroes visit Crown Point Central School Interactive role-playing helps everyone involved in ‘bullying cycle’
CROWN POINT | Crown Point Central School (CPCS) students were delivered a special message on the second day of school. Motivational speakers from a group called Sweethearts and Heroes spoke to students about the impact of bullying, the power of perspective, and the steps that all students and staff members can take to change school climates in a positive way. Speaker Tom Murphy challenged students to show empathy to others, be empowered bystanders and believe in H.O.P.E, the group’s acronym for “Hold On, Possibilities Exist”. Along with Murphy, United States Army veteran Rick Yarosh spoke to students about his own experience. Yarosh was injured in Iraq in 2006 when his vehicle hit an IED and he suffered burns over 60% of his body. He spent six months in an army hospital recovering from his injuries. In what may have seemed like a hopeless situation to many, Yarosh discussed overcoming adversity and not giving in when the going got tough. Yarosh and his service dog, Angus, now spend a great deal of time speaking at schools and other locations around the country. ■

TICONDEROGA | On Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. the Ticonderoga Historical Society will host its last free movie night of 2019 with the screening of director Billy Wilder’s 1960 comedy hit “Some Like It Hot,” starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. Having just witnessed the Chicago Valentine’s Day massacre, itinerant musicians Curtis and Lemmon are forced to go on the lam in order to stay alive as they flee from the mob. They dress in drag and hit the road with a traveling all-girl band. “Despite their plans, the guys’ lives just get more and more complicated — and hilariously ridiculous. Don’t miss Joe E. Brown as he delivers the movie’s unforgettable closing crack.” The Ti Historical Society is located at 6 Moses Circle. Call them for more information at 518-585-7868. ■

It is recommended that you shut off your boiler or hot water heater and shut off your main valve coming into your home to prevent the possibility of siphoning water from your boiler or hot water heater. If you do not have a main valve, or are not sure of its location you can contact the Water Department at 942-3340. Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
Living United By Dan Alexander PUBLISHER
Our area United Way campaigns are now underway and need your active support. Over the years I’ve had the great fortune to be a part of the United Way Campaign. I’ve seen first hand what the United Way is all about and how valuable they are to those in our communities. Obviously, charitable giving means different things to different people. Who among us wouldn’t give when we know the exact circumstances of the need? Who wouldn’t part with a few bucks a week if it meant a Life Flight Helicopter would come to the rescue of their family member or even themselves? Sadly many never recognize the value of those few dollars given each week. How a couple of bucks can impact the lives of so many or when those same few dollars plus many more may come to their own aid. Just like the devastating damage from a storm, fire or accident we never know what’s around the corner for any of us and there is nothing any of us wouldn’t do when we clearly see the immediate need. Unfortunately, the need isn’t always right there on the surface clearly visible to all. It’s buried in the everyday hectic life we all seem to live these days but, for many of those who suffer at the hand of misfortune, they need a helping hand. That’s where the Partner Agencies of the United Way step forward every day, dealing with both large and visible events as well as those private, behind the scenes family issues that affect so many across our region. Many of these volunteer agencies would cease to exist without our voluntary contribution either through the United Way Campaign or outright donations by a generous public. Through the United Way Campaign, 100% of your contribution can be channeled directly to a specific agency or agencies of your choice. Only through the United Way Campaign will your employer allow you to have a payroll deduction taken each pay that adds up to a significant dollar amount by year’s end. Only through the United Way Campaign can you join with other generous givers from around our region to create a major giving source to support these hard-working non-profit agencies. This allows them to focus their energies on serving those in need and not on raising funds. On behalf of all the agencies and the many volunteers who generously donate their time, and most importantly all those served by these dedicated agencies, thank you for your consideration in supporting this most worthwhile community campaign. No amount is too small to make an impact. ■ — Dan Alexander is the publisher of the Sun Community News

Both chambers took an oath To the Editor: Um, of course the voters will decide in 2020. And maybe the Russians will have a say too, as decorated Marine and former FBI director Mueller documented and warned against. And maybe the Ukrainians can have a say too, if the president can blackmail them with congressionally approved aid in return for dirt on his political opponents. You are being disingenuous if you pretend not to understand the political lay of the land regarding impeachment. It takes two houses, and smart Democrats realize impeachment is a dead end in the Republican controlled Senate. Both chambers took an oath to the Constitution, not a man or party. But one party is refusing to exercise the same oversight that they did so fervently with Democratic presidents. Ask yourself how Republicans would have reacted if Obama had invited the Taliban (The Taliban!!!) to American soil to negotiate. On the week of 9/11???!!! I thought we didn’t negotiate with terrorists! But, Mr. Trump hasn’t met a dictator he doesn’t admire. The lovely Saudis-who supplied the majority of the terrorists who flew into our buildings, he kisses their rings, and his elected son in law takes loans from them! It’s a damn shame Senator McCain (who I voted for) is no longer with us. He accurately described Mr. Trump, and the particular danger he represents. It seems to me that the Republican Party that I knew and supported has ceased to exist. What remains may as well be re-named the Trump party. Ask yourself, if there were 20 “Republican” Senators with McCain’s character, how far along the impeachment inquiry would we be? Of course, the traitor would be gone, and happily we’d have a President Pence. Take a new picture for your by-line: one with blinders on. — Mark Bealor, Saranac Lake ■ This letter is in response to Dan Alexander’s column “Let the voters decide” that appeared in the Sept. 21 edition of The Sun.
Zoning in Warrensburg To the Editor: Is the Town of Warrensburg selling its soul? On Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. the town’s Planning Board will be reviewing a site plan for a Dollar General store on the former Senior Center Building property at 3847 Main Street. That property is zoned “Hamlet Mixed Use,” allowing for “pedestrian-oriented mix of residential, office and smaller scale commercial use, generally in converted homes or other structures compatible with adjacent neighborhoods.” A Dollar General store would require a variance in such a zone. Warrensburg is familiar with the term “variance.” Stewart’s Shops required a variance to build in the same zone. Krystal Chrysler’s display lot, adjacent to the post

1. Ownership of simple firearms with lesser options necessary for livelihood/protection. 2. To sustain a militia to protect new democracy from a tyrannical federal government. 3. 13 states, so less people. 4. No social media to verbalize views to the population to act upon. 5. Fewer social factors stymie the element leading to mass shootings.
2019:
1. Many firearms, multitude of choices for leisure and protection. 2. Some gun owners still cite fear of tyrannical government. 3. 50 states, more people. 4. Social media radicalizes some and encourages action. 5. Too many social factors contribute to mass shootings. Laws must change when things evolve to stay relevant and fulfill their purpose, to protect people. Here’s an analogy to ponder. The first speed limit sign was introduced in 1901. (12 mph) Thirty-three years later Chicago imposed a speed limit of 30 mph due to a rise in fatalities. Stop signs, traffic lights, etc. were introduced to meet the challenge of a new era. Laws came about to protect drivers, pedestrians and properties. Why haven’t gun laws changed for the same reasons? — Ken Sausa, Lake Placid ■ This letter is in response to Anton Cooper’s letter “Federal gun legislation needed” that ran in the Aug. 24 edition of The Sun.

1791:
To the Editor: Mr. Cooper expressed some practical points and obvious common sense ones also. Certainly competitive shooting is fun, but somehow an assault weapon’s only purpose is to obliviate anything in it’s path. It legitimizes “destruction of human life targets!” By definition, it’s sole purpose in a war environment is to kill many very quickly. I respect the right of gun ownership, but I do get irked when people cite the Second Amendment to justify their views. This amendment was ratified on Dec. 15, 1791.

office, also required a variance from the existing zoning, also Hamlet Mixed Use. On what grounds were those granted? Zoning took a long time to be established in Warrensburg. The current plan was ratified in 2012. Such zoning is intended to preserve the quality of life in certain areas, usually residential, but often to preserve the ambiance of historic business or professional areas as well. By violating the precepts of a particular zone for whatever reason, the intention of the zoning plan is lost. One variance opens the door to anyone following and therefore should be entered upon with serious thought and trepidation. In addition to its wonderful mix of young families and retirees, one of the Town’s best assets is its historic hometown appearance, with numerous homes and commercial buildings dating to the turn-of-the-20 th century. That these are being maintained by their owners should be recognized and applauded, perhaps even rewarded. Manipulating well-intended zoning for short-term monetary benefit will destroy the fabric of our town, and the benefits to both visitors and home-owners. I urge residents to attend that meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 7 p.m. — Steve Parisi, Warrensburg ■

“The myth is out there that when the state buys land that it doesn’t pay any taxes — but that’s not so,” Scozzafava said. The town might get more revenue if properties were commercially developed, but that’s unlikely to happen. “You’re not going to see someone come in and build a resort,” Scozzafava said. Eddy board member John Davis said the foundation wants to sell the land and use the proceeds to protect more land around the Split Rock Wildway, a forested corridor connecting Lake Champlain with the High Peaks that allows wildlife to resume their traditional migration patterns. The Wildway runs from the shore of Lake Champlain between Westport and Essex up the Boquet River watershed to the Jay, Hurricane and Giant Mountain wildernesses. The defendant, LaRock, faces a sentence of a minimum of 25 years and a maximum of life in state prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 7. He is being held at the Essex County jail until sentencing. LaRock’s guilty plea follows a string of evidentiary hearings that were leading up to trial. LaRock entered his guilty plea, approximately a week into pretrial hearings. LaRock was originally indicted on five charges, including second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, aggravated criminal possession of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence and concealment of a human corpse. With his guilty plea of
with Champlain Area Trails to develop a trail system to Parch Pond and Broughton Ledges. Parch Pond will compliment Tub Mill Pond, a 1,200-acre tract on the other side of Ensign Pond Road, which was protected by the Open Space Institute, and recently opened to the public. “That property is beautiful and it’s going to be used,” Scozzafava said. “It’s a hidden jewel in the Adirondacks.” With its construction of the Frontier Town campground, the state is hoping to draw outdoors enthusiasts away from overused Keene Valley and steer them toward southern access points to the High Peaks and the Hammond Pond Wild Forest on the east side of Interstate 87. Together, Hammond Pond, Parch Pond and Tub Mill Pond make Ensign Pond Road an attractive and nearby destination for Frontier Town campers, as well as local hikers and sportsmen. ■

The kits have special equipment designed for small air passages and tiny limbs. Woods said the kits will allow Ti to offer assistance to neighboring communities that might not have the equipment, as well. Kiwanis member John Bartlett said the club got the idea while listening to a presentation in Plattsburgh about the special needs of children in distress. “Kiwanis’ mission is serving the children of the world, so it seemed like we should get at least one kit for the EMS,” he said. But the fundraiser for the medical bag was so successful that the group was able to buy two. The kits have medical equipment for children who have been in accidents, size-appropriate breathing apparatus and blood-pressure cuffs, and gear to assist with childbirth. “Time is of the essence, so we wanted them
second degree murder, LaRock may avoid added sentencing. Two others are also connected to the murder of William “Liam” Brown and also pleaded guilty in conjunction with LaRock on Thursday. Donald C. LaRock, 63, the defendant’s father, pleaded guilty to felony counts of hindering prosecution and tampering with physical evidence and agreed to serve up 2-⅓ to 7 years in prison. Joshua W. Smith, 35, pleaded guilty to tampering with physical evidence and faces a state prison sentence of up to 1-⅓ to 4 years.
to have equipment that will make it easier,” Bartlett said. Ti EMS Capt. Renee Swinton said the gear is appreciated and will help medics in their work, since they will not have to fumble with adult-sized equipment that is awkward when dealing with toddlers. The Ticonderoga EMS originated in 1941, by a group or residents who transported people in need of medical care to the hospital in old hearses. It was basically a transport system only, but through the years more and more care has been provided by ambulance staff. The equipment through the years has gotten more sophisticated, and correspondingly more expensive. A fundraising dinner to help raise money for the squad was recently rescheduled. The new time for the spaghetti dinner is Oct. 17, at 4 p.m., at Burleigh’s in Ticonderoga. ■
LaRock’s guilty plea comes nine months after the shooting death of Liam Brown and dumping of his body in the LaChute River near Bicentennial Park last December. It also follows a nationwide manhunt for LaRock which found him near the Canadian border in St. Lawrence County days after the incident. LaRock has established a lengthy criminal history and was a convicted felon prior to the Brown shooting. LaRock has not given information as to what led up to the incident or why he took the actions that he did. After returning to Ticonderoga with combat retirement, Brown had been known to help friends and acquaintances struggling with addiction and knew LaRock. ■
School worker charged Ti EMS benefit with endangering a child dinner rescheduled Police say employee failed alcohol screen By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER
TICONDEROGA | A man working for the Ticonderoga Central School system has been charged with endangering the life of a child, after police were called to the school to confirm a suspicion of intoxication. Ticonderoga Police Chief Adam Hurlburt said Jeff Wertz of Ticonderoga was processed and released under an appearance ticket on Monday. Wertz’ LinkedIn profile lists his occupation as a groundskeeper for the school, although parents on social media said Wertz also drove a bus for the

TICONDEROGA | Due to unforeseen circumstances, a spaghetti dinner for the benefit of the Ticonderoga Emergency Medical Squad has been rescheduled. The new date is Thursday, Oct. 17, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Burleigh’s Luncheonette on Montcalm Street. Spaghetti and meatball dinners, including dessert, are available as eat-in, takeout or delivery. The cost is $10, and proceeds go to the Ticonderoga EMS. ■
school system. Ticonderoga superintendent John Donohue would not discuss the incident, saying it was a personnel matter. School board president Mark Russell declined to say whether Wertz was still employed, or whether he had driven a bus with children on it while drunk. Russell suggested in an email that more information might be released in time, but that social media posts were “inaccurate and inappropriate.” He did not specify the inaccuracies. Hurlburt said police were called to the school on Monday, Sept. 9, at 9:15 a.m. to investigate an incident involving a school employee who had a positive alcohol screen. Police sent their findings to the district attorney’s office for instructions on how to proceed. ■

Moriah/Boquet Valley’s Logan Van Buren placed 24th overall, the Goats place 27th and were the top Section VII/Class D team behind Van Buren at the Section VII/Pre State Invitational Sept. 21. Also placing were Emery Tausinger (158), T.J. Bilow (198), Cole Simer (204), Denali Garnica (207) and Landon Peters (230).
TICONDEROGA | With 300 yards of offense on the ground — over half from Maddox Blaise — and two big plays from Braden Swan, the Moriah Vikings took the first of the two-game season series from the Ticonderoga Sentinel football team, 42-6, Sept. 20. Blaise went for 175 yards and two scores, while Swan had a 30 yard touchdown reception and 105 yard interception return for a touchdown in the Viking win. Todd Malbon threw the touchdown pass to Swan while also running for a touchdown, as Matt Diehl also had one rushing score.

“I saw the ball and was able to make the catch,” said Swan about his interception in the second quarter with Moriah leading 21-7. “I was going to knee it but I saw green and took off for it. My teammates always throw great blocks.” “They could have cut the lead to one score and he picks it off and goes 100-plus yards so it was big to get that interception and not let them score,” said Moriah head coach Don Tesar. “We had a couple chances, but the interception was big because it was a 14-point swing on one play,” said Ticonderoga coach Bobby Porter. Swan also started the scoring with the reception for a 7-0 lead. “We had the play called earlier, but I wanted to get the first down,” Tesar said. “Once I had the first down, my coaches were saying we were running the ball too well but I had a feeling they would bite on the play action.” Tesar gave credit to his quarterback, who was making his first start after Jeff Strieble went out with a concussion last week. “Todd threw a great pass that was on the money to Braden,” Tesar said. “He threw a great pass last week that was on the money, as well.” He added the Vikings did a good
Moriah’s Myles Madill comes through the Ticonderoga line to eventually record a sack on Sentinel quarterback Terrence Benedict during the Sept. 20 meeting between the two squads. big times in week two. Those things make up the difference. You eliminate those penalties and you have the lead in both games. We stressed keeping the hands in and limiting penalties.” For the Sentinels, Benedict connected with brother Monty Benedict for the lone score of the game.
Another key for the Vikings was the play of the lines, providing holes for Blaise and the run game while getting into the Ticonderoga backfield on defense. “Blocking has been everything,” said Blaise. ”The line has been great. It all starts in practice and with the line.” “They are young kids still and they do not have experience starting on the offensive line last year,” said Tesar of that grouping. “We took Mark Maye from fullback to tackle and brought Myles Madill into a twoway role and the line has really been a bright spot this season.” Tesar added the focus of the entire team to clean up their play was key. “We have been stressing fixing the penalties we have had called on us,” he said. “We had over 200 yards in penalties called on us in week one. We had big penalties called at
The win over Ticonderoga reminded Tesar and the team of last season, starting with an 0-2 record but responding with a big win over the Sentinels in week three. The Vikings went on to win eight more games after, including the Section VII/Class D title and advancing to the state title game. However, the Vikings know this is a new year, and also know they have to remain disciplined or they can revert back to the first two weeks. “It was heartbreaking to lose both of those games because we could have won them,” said Blaise. “We went into practice last Monday and fi xed everything we could and came out tonight and fought hard.” “The mentality was low to start the week but it is only going up from here,” said Swan. “We know what we want to accomplish and what we have to do.” ■
