MORIAH |On Tuesday, residents of Moriah Central School
District approved the school’s proposed $14.9 million slate of capital repair and building projects. Superintendent William Larrow said the official ballot count was 168 in support and 21 against. “We’re very, very happy as a district to be able to perform some much needed work to our school buildings and property. We would like to thank everyone who came out to vote tonight and to staff and community members in the Moriah Project Committee who were a huge part of the planning process for this project.” See MORIAH SCHOOL PLAN » pg. 8
Ti school consolidation under discussion Ti Central looks to combine middle, high schools By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER
THE ~SUN ::.:.:.:...:_:.: '"''"G
TICONDEROGA | Hoping to avoid a repeat of last year’s budget difficulties, the Ticonderoga School Board is looking at structural, cost-saving changes that include the consolidation of its middle and high schools. The board delayed a vote on the plan last week to give more time for community input. But board members left little doubt that the system will transfer its 7th and 8th graders to the Calkins Place high school next fall.

even those on Broadway. But with tickets for the popular musical still pushing $700 a seat, the possibilities seemed slim. Then, sitting alone in her car, LeclaireCharron’s cellphone dinged. Back in February she had thrown a Hail Mary, applying for a grant to see the show from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in partnership with Rockefeller Center. She had since almost forgotten about it, but there it was, an email on her phone telling her that Crown Point had won. See HAMILTON » pg. 8
LOCAL ‘FRIENDS’ CHARITY GIVES AND RECEIVES
By Laurel Carroll STAFF WRITER
TICONDEROGA | When Wendy Shaw went through two bouts of breast cancer years ago, friends and strangers rallied to her side and helped her through that difficult time with conversation, encouragement, prayers and just plain old “being there.” Realizing the healing power of that support, she decided to pass the kindness and generosity she’d received on to others in similar circumstances. So she founded Friends Comforting Friends (FCF) about 6 years ago, and it’s been flourishing ever since. In what might be considered a mission statement, according to FCF’s Facebook page, “Friends Comforting Friends, Inc., is a nonprofit charity organization that helps area cancer patients with travel expenses for medical treatments (gas cards). We also provide gift baskets of comfort items for patients who are undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments.” More than 800 area cancer patients have received emotional
support and financial aid from FCF, and many have become FCF volunteers after recovery. The Friends Comforting Friends’ now ubiquitous “Comfort Care Bag” is filled with thoughtful small gifts to help ease some of the smaller but trying challenges faced by those undergoing treatment. Ever the optimist, Wendy likes to say, “Every day might not be good, but there’s something good in every day.” To learn more about Friends Comforting Friends, keep up with friends or just get some good mojo, go to Facebook.com/ groups/1440773509562856. ■ The DePaula Auto Group of Albany recently donated an additional $8,000 to Friends Comforting Friends, bringing their total contribution to $15,000, in honor of Vickie Goff Drinkwine, who had been a much-loved 22-year employee at DePaula. Drinkwine passed away this summer from complications of breast cancer; DePaula wanted to honor her in a meaningful way. Pictured (r-l) are Wendy Shaw (president, Friends Comforting Friends), Paul Lynch (vice president, DePaula Auto Group) and Gary Drinkwine, Vickie’s husband. Photo provided

Schroon Lake church receives help Neighboring congregations donate $9,000 to rebuild fire-ravaged church By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
POTTERSVILLE | Members of two Pottersville congregations — SonRise Lutheran Church and Christ Episcopal Church — recently presented a $9,000 check to Schroon Lake Community Church officials. The donation was made possible by proceeds from Oktoberfest, a fundraising event held annually by both the Pottersville congregations to raise money for people in need locally. The proceeds of this year’s Oktoberfest were committed to help fund expenses associated with rebuilding the sanctuary of the Schroon Lake Community Church, which was destroyed by fire last January. An article drawing attention to the financial needs of the Schroon Lake church and a preview of the Oktoberfest event appeared in articles published in The Sun Community News in advance of the event. Held Sept. 6, this collaborative German-themed festival sponsored by the churches drew the largest crowd in its history, raising four times the amount expected, according to event organizers. Soon after the Oktoberfest, both church congregations together added $3,000 or so to the proceeds gleaned from the event, attaining the $9,000 total. Months ago, Schroon Lake Community Church Pastor Lynette Cole said she deeply appreciated the outpouring of

Also, town of North Hudson Supervisor Stephanie Dezalia offered her thoughts about the two congregations collaborating on the donation to Schroon Lake Community Church. She was baptized, confirmed, taught Sunday School, and married her late husband in that church.
“I think this is a wonderful gesture; it is exactly what our small communities are all about — We are one people,” Dezalia said in an email. “We stand united no matter the cause at hand —The devastation brought on by the Jan. 2 fire rocked our whole community far and wide.” ■

FESTIVAL OF TREES OPENS WITH RECORD ATTENDANCE TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Historical Society’s annual Festival of Trees has attracted a record number of visitors to date, with more than 200 people attending the free reception on Dec. 1 at the Hancock House. “Establishing a theme and awarding cash prizes has helped spur interest in this year’s Festival of Trees,” said THS president, Bill Dolback. “Additionally, the train layouts provided by Upstate Model Railroaders have brought a lot of folks to see the holiday splendor.” Because 30th anniversaries are “pearl” anniversaries, the planning committee chose “Pearls of History” as an optional theme for the Festival. Trees were judged by an anonymous panel of three individuals who were not local residents. The Ticonderoga Area Seniors took the $100 award for Best Theme Tree with “Pearls of Wisdom,” featuring pearl-ornamented sayings regarding the wisdom of age. The Ti Natural Foods Co-op won $100 for Most Creative Tree for a stunning 12-foot tree ornamented from top to bottom with shimmering dried fruits and other natural decorations. The Black Watch Memorial Library took Best Display for a nontraditional holiday tribute to books and authors, and Ticonderoga Elementary School won Best Kid’s Tree for a full-sized tree decorated with handmade “pearly” snowmen ornaments. The Festival of Trees remains open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. through Dec. 28. For additional information, contact the Hancock House at 518-585-7868 or via e-mail at: tihistory@bridgepoint1.com. ■

Redemption center changes hands Crown Point business remains a family enterprise By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER
CROWN POINT | Crown Point Redemption Plus is under new ownership and will operate on a new schedule starting Jan. 12. The redemption center, at 2615 Main St., was opened by Gary Varmette of Crown Point in 2016. New owner Tom Holman said the change will be easy, because its always been run like a family business. It will continue to do so, as it transitions to Holman, his daughter Ashlie, and Shelly Peppin. The new hours will be Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for holidays. It will be closed Sundays and Mondays Holmn said the business counts and sorts 10,000 to 30,000 cans and bottles a day, dividing them up by brand and size. Crown Point Redemption Plus also sells snacks and beverages, propane, firewood and other supplies. It operates from a 1931 building that once sold and serviced DeSoto and Chrysler automobiles, Holman said. Holman said it’s a big enough space that bottle sorting can be

New York’s bottle bill reduces roadside container litter by 70 percent, according to the state. By Dan Alexander PUBLISHER
I’ve had the opportunity to speak with a number of readers since launching our Support Community Journalism program. While the vast majority have been very gracious, we’ve had a few nasty grams along the way, too. I thought I would spend a little time this week explaining in more detail what we are trying to accomplish. One of the most common questions I’ve heard is, why not just convert back to a paid newspaper? Having been in this business for nearly forty years, I’ve seen far too many newspapers fail to adapt. Paid newspapers refuse to go free because they can’t replace the revenue lost from subscriptions so they kept raising the subscription price while cutting staff and coverage. As they do so, they are losing advertisers because the paper no longer reaches as many homes. The result is a downward spiral until they finally throw in the towel and shut down. On the other side of the spectrum, we’ve seen free papers try to convert to paid. Sadly, in nearly every effort, they failed to generate enough subscriptions to be viable. Our planned approach is to accomplish more than just survive. We see the mission ahead that is more far-reaching than just our company’s survival. In their heydays, before capital investment firms began buying up the vast majority of newspapers, the local newspaper was a staple in nearly every home. It was the critical fiber that connected the community with vital information about the schools, local government, community events, sports, tragedies, deaths, births, as well as business and retail shopping information. It was affordable, trusted, dependable, and locally owned. Today, we have many forms of communication, but not one can claim they have the same market reach as The Sun. There are too many choices, and with those choices comes fragmentation. By maintaining our saturated delivery system and reaching every home, we not only provide an important service to local advertisers but, more importantly, we provide the resource information that keeps local communities vibrant and thriving. Our hope is to obtain a voluntary subscription from 7% to 10% of the homes we send The Sun to every week. Now imagine this vast area where we currently send out 71,000 papers being reduced to less than 5,000 homes that can afford to send in a voluntary contribution? No single media vehicle could duplicate the reach of The Sun with balanced news and information coverage. Local businesses and governments would struggle to reach the population with far more splintered choices than budgets could accommodate. Building the type of printing system we’ve developed over 70 years and finding the staff to operate it would also be a challenge should someone choose to pick up where we left off. We understand not everyone is able to contribute, and not everyone appreciates what we do, but it’s clear that those who can assist, recognize the wisdom in maintaining this common local thread that knits the community and our region together. We believe we are on the right track. Jerry Nadler, and fi nished by Nancy Pelosi. The Democrats’ case rested on the illusion of a quid pro quo: that President Trump refused to provide aid to Ukraine until the Bidens were investigated. However, this case is easily disproven by two critical facts: security assistance and defensive lethal aid was provided to Ukraine, and there was no investigation into the Bidens. It’s unfortunate that House Democrats believe their disdain for President Trump is more important than respecting the will of the American people.” ■

President Trump and the will of the American people who elected him. In order to impeach a duly-elected President, there must be direct evidence of impeachable offenses – high crimes and misdemeanors, bribery or treason. Neither the Intelligence Committee nor the Judiciary Committee found direct evidence, resulting in bipartisan opposition to impeachment. $100,000 grant will benefit Ti businesses T I CO N D E RO G A | T he E ssex Cou nt y Industrial Development Agency, in partnership with the Town of Ticonderoga and the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce, was awarded a 2019 Adirondack Park Community Smart Growth Grant Program for a Microenterprise Program. The total amount awarded for this program is $100,000, and was provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to strengthen links between community and visitors and the surrounding recreational and cultural resources. The Microenterprise Grant Program (MGP) will soon be available for local businesses located (or to be located) along main street/ central business district. A public information meeting for potential applicants will be held on Monday, Jan. 6, at 70 p.m. at the Ticonderoga Town Hall located at 132 Montcalm St. The MGP was established to provide grants to eligible expanding or startup Microenterprise businesses that propose ecotourism-related initiatives located in Ticonderoga. Qualified businesses will be identified through an application process and must participate in the Microenterprise Training Program to be held on Monday, Jan. 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Ticonderoga Town Hall. The Micro-Training Program will be conducted by the SUNY Canton Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at a cost of $60 per business (which may be reimbursable for
grant recipients). The applications are due by noon, Feb. 4, 2020, at the Essex County IDA’s office in Elizabethtown. The timeline for improvements is expected to be completed by Nov. 30, 2020. The MGP is specifically targeting assistance for entrepreneurs whose business provides visitor services and supports the Ticonderoga Destination Master Plan Strategy for tourism (such as restaurants, supplies, goods, services, accommodations
and health care–related businesses). The Ticonderoga Destination Master Plan envisions that the growth of history-related tourism, coupled with an expanding arts and crafts economy and outdoor recreation, will support expanded tourism investment by both public and private sectors, generating jobs and business opportunities for people who live in Ticonderoga. The program will provide resolution to small businesses’ lack of access to capital,

and assist businesses in offering a more relevant mix of wares, goods and services to help improve the viability of businesses, to become more sustainable and retain and create new jobs. The MGP will address the critical need for new and expanding goods and services for visitors attracted to the area for its historic and cultural resources. It will also support businesses that cater directly to the recreational visitor along main street in the community’s center of economic activity. Grants awarded to businesses in the community’s centers can enhance areas that are designed to be market-driven and offer the potential for walkability, increased commercial activity and multiple consolidated quality visitor services in one area. A microenterprise is a business that employs nine full-time equivalent or fewer persons (including the owners) located in and providing services in the program area. To be eligible for assistance, a microenterprise must retain or create jobs. The grant funds can be used for the purchase of inventory, equipment, furniture and fixtures, operational costs, marketing, working capital and startup costs. For information on the Micro Grant Program, please contact the Essex County IDA at 518-873-9114. To register for the Micro-Training Program, please contact the SBDC at 518-324-7232. From TI CONSOLIDATION » pg. 1
“We’re here to maintain the quality of our programming. And to do that we have to move forward,” said Board Member John Reale. The plan would save money by reducing employees, which is the system’s largest expense. The board hopes to do this without layoffs, although it’s uncertain at this point if attrition alone will sufficiently reduce the workforce. Board President Mark Russell said that ultimately the plan will make teacher jobs more secure once the system has been “right sized.” “We want to have stability, so when teachers come here they can retire here if they want,” Russell said. The board’s budget is currently hemmed in by declining enrollments, falling federal revenue, increasing state mandates and the 2% tax cap. The board tried to break the cap last spring, to stabilize the system’s finances, but the plan was soundly rejected by voters. Realignment has been on the system’s back burner for years, but it’s come to the fore over concerns for how next year’s budget will shape up. Members of the public were invited to speak at last week’s meeting, and while guardedly supportive of the plan, they worried about the commingling of younger and older students. They said they were concerned about the potential for bullying, and picking up ageinappropriate behaviors from older students. Kathy Marshall, who teaches home and career skills to elementary and middle school students, said that the middle school years “are very pivotal in a child’s development,” and that they need dedicated support. “They have fears and concerns that we don’t have,” Marshall said. “Change is hard; you can’t fight it, but real change needs to be thought out.”
Cynthia Ford-Johnston, a long-time North Country school administrator who is providing expertise in the absence of a permanent Ti superintendent, said the high school is large enough to segregate the younger students. That means younger students will have classrooms, lockers and restrooms to themselves, even as 7th through 12th grade teachers will be able to better collaborate in terms of educational programming. “The concept isn’t to plug them into the midst of older students,” said Board Member Seanna Porter. “They will have a chance to continue to develop in a way that is appropriate for their age group.” Porter said that Ti is actually a regional exception in maintaining a separate middle school — other schools in the area have been able to education all grades on the same campus without difficulty. The school system was forced to eliminate positions and make other cuts last spring to squeeze its budget under the cap. It doesn’t yet have the numbers needed to put together the 2020-21 budget, “so we don’t know how bad or how good the budget is going to be,” Ford-Johnston said. But the trendlines are not cause for optimism. Over the past 10 years, Ti Central has lost a quarter of its school population. State aid is up a tick, but federal aid is down 54%. Meanwhile, “Insurance has doubled and new mandates are coming every year, and they are generally not funded,” Ford-Johnston said. To make ends meet without breaking the tax cap, the school system has relied heavily on its fund balance, but now those accounts are dwindling. “If you sat through the budget hearings last spring, you know that financially we’re in trouble,” she said. “The status quo is no longer feasible.” ■
From MORIAH SCHOOL PLAN » pg. 1
Aspects of the wide-ranging school renovation and repair plan have been in review for over a year. School security improvements are a major component of the project, Larrow said. “The safety part is the most important part of this project, and our goal is to make a safer environment for our staff and students.” School security updates will add entry vestibules at the school entrance and lock-down openings in several main corridors, and secure the cafeteria with hardened openings at entry points. Improvements to security in elementary school classrooms include installing window glass and added lighting.

From HAMILTON » pg. 1
So this month, 14 students, with the support of the institute, the school and the community, got an early Christmas president, traveling to New York City, not just for the show, but for historical tours that included a visit to the Founding Father Alexander Hamilton’s grave. For the students, “Hamilton” the musical lived up to the hype. “It was so different from any other play I’d seen,” said Thomas Woods. “There’s no other play like it.” Thomas, one of four Crown Point students who discussed the experience, said the musical makes clear the greatness of the Founders, while noting their human frailties — including Thomas Jefferson, who could be a bit of a pill when dealing with British diplomats, most notably Anthoney Merry, whom he received while wearing bedroom slippers to demonstrate his disrespect. As a condition of the trip, the students each put together a project — a poem, a skit or such — based on the history surrounding the founding of the nation. Gilder Lehrman made available a rich trove of primary source documents that students could avail themselves of online. Gavin Sours wrote a farewell letter from Hamilton’s perspective, on the grounds that history might have been different had the founder not been killed in a duel with Aaron Burr while still in his 40s. He was the only Founder not to live into what we think of as old age. The music of the show was already familiar to students. “We’d been hearing about the show for a long time,” said Lilli Peters, who said students from their history classes were familiar with the more high-profile founders — but Hamilton’s life was not as well-known.
Health and safety renovations include floor replacement with asbestos abatement; plumbing, drainage and sanitary system repairs; replacement of the bus loop canopy; athletic field drainage work and the addition of a track and field course with a soccer field in its center. Work to be done in the bus garage includes updates to plumbing fixtures; the addition of emergency/exit lights; addition of a wash bay with public water and sanitary upgrades; review of the existing below grade fuel storage and extension of port collars; and upgrades for accessibility for disabled persons. Construction likely won’t start until spring 2021, Larrow said, as the project has to go through New York Education Department review for approval.

If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.

CROWN POINT
Moriah receives 95.3 percent building aid from state education, which means that, of the proposed $14,960,000 project, the local share is 4.7 percent, or $703,120. The total cost for bus garage repairs is $1,041,601. The total cost for work at the main building is $9,992,453. And the total cost for work at the main campus site, including the track field and parking lot improvements, is $3,924,223. The project is not expected to impact the school tax rate, as the local share would be moved in a bond payment, essentially maintaining current spending levels. “There’s still a lot of work we have to do,” Larrow said. “The whole project is going to be great for the community.” ■

DEATH NOTICES
“This was a whole new aspect of what that time in history was like,” she said. The cast is racially diverse (George Washington is black) because it is shown from the perspective of what America looks like today. But Christopher said the characters were impeccably researched, and interpreted so as to infer how the historical figures would have spoken and moved. The students said “Hamilton” was all the more meaningful because of Crown Point’s revolutionary history, and they could pick out references to events that happened in the Champlain Valley here and there, such as the movement of cannon from Ticonderoga and Crown Point forts to Washington’s position in Boston. Leclaire-Charron said the students are no strangers to theatrical productions. “Attending shows has become such a part of our culture at Crown Point,” she said. “When I have tickets, they line up at the door, even male athletes, and kids you wouldn’t expect.” For some, it’s their first trip to New York City, which is an educational experience in itself. “Just having experiences like that exposes them to a new type of culture,” she said. Along with the institutional help, the trip was made possible by the community, which helped raise money for transportation, lodging and spending money. Leclaire-Charron thanked the following people and businesses for their support: Justin Batt, Director of the U.S. Army Harbor Defense Museum at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, Avery Energy, Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union, Ed Nolan, Fort Ticonderoga, Christopher Chevrolet, Adirondack Sand and Gravel, McDonald’s, East Coast Syndicate, Walmart and Stewart’s Shops. ■

Westport Full Moon Hike planned First full-moon event of 2020 WESTPORT | Champlain Area Trails (CATS) and John Brown Lives! (JBL!) will co-host a Full Moon Hike at the Viall’s Crossing Trail in Westport on Friday, Jan. 10. The hike will begin at 5 p.m. under the first full moon of 2020. Although this is the first collaboration between CATS and JBL!, it’s a natural fit given the history of Viall’s Crossing Farm and its connection to John Brown. Asa Viall, the son of the farm’s first owner, was a friend of the abolitionist, who led an unsuccessful raid on a Virginia armory in 1859. Brown was executed as a result of the raid, and Asa provided and drove the wagon that took Brown’s body to its final resting
place in North Elba, near Lake Placid. The farm had been in the same family for five generations when CATS preserved the 135-acre property in 2018, working with the Eddy Foundation to purchase the property and then purchasing a conservation easement to protect the history and the land for future hikers to enjoy. Viall’s Crossing was then sold to a young farming family and CATS created trails on the land, which have proved to be among the most popular in the CATS network. The Full Moon Hike will follow a loop trail at Viall’s Crossing called John Brown’s Trail, which commemorates the farm’s historical connection to John Brown, passing by some towering trees that bore witness to Brown’s passage 160 years ago. The 1.5 mile hike will take about an hour and a half and if there’s snow, participants are welcome to snowshoe or

cross-country ski. The hike will begin at a point just west of the railroad tracks on Route 22, about halfway between Westport and Wadhams; look for the bright yellow trail signs. After the hike, participants are invited to meet and dine at a local restaurant to be determined. “We’re delighted to collaborate with John Brown Lives! for this unique hike under the full moon,” said CATS Executive Director Chris Maron. “It’s an interesting intersection of our respective programs, involving both history and trails.” “This will be a first for us,” said John Brown Lives! Executive Director Martha Swan. “As the official friends group for the John Brown Farm State Historic Site in North Elba, we’ve hosted hikes before but never a hike in the moonlight. We’re looking forward to it.” There is no fee for the Full Moon Hike, but registration is advised in case there is last-minute information to share. Dear Friends: We hope you enjoy your weekly edition of The SUN. Each week, we do our best to provide our readers with timely, accurate community news, as well as coverage of education, features on engaging community members, and the best high school sports round up. We see it as our role to highlight the good things that are happening in our rural communities, and to shine a spotlight on the many wonderful volunteers and organizations that might otherwise go unrecognized. However, as a small, independent newspaper company, we face many challenges. The cost of paper and postage continue to rise as we face ever-increasing competition for local advertising dollars, which make up more than 95 percent of our revenues. To help us continue to bring the community a compelling community news product, we are asking for your support. Please consider for a moment the value you receive: from the news, features, sports, commentary, fliers, and marketing materials each week in your SUN community newspaper. Is that worth 50 cents a week to you? Or $1? Perhaps more? If so, we are asking you to help support our efforts so that we can continue to provide this community service for many years to come.
Your Basic Subscription to The SUN remains free, but if you see the value and have the ability, we are asking you to consider Enhanced Support with a contribution of $26 (50 cents per week), $52 ($1 per week), or any other amount you feel is appropriate. Regardless, we really need your support to keep publishing and delivering this newspaper! Even if you can’t support our efforts financially, by filling out the form below, you may help us qualify for significant discounts from the U.S Postal Service. All we need is some necessary information and your signature stating that you are requesting a three-year free subscription to The SUN. In the next few months, we will evaluate the support generated from this request. If sufficient support is raised, we hope to maintain news coverage and distribution at our current level. If not, other remedies to reduce overhead will need to be implemented. As always, we welcome your feedback. If there’s anything we can do to improve your reader experience, please contact me at dan@suncommunitynews.com. Sincerely, Dan Alexander, Publisher

Jacob Nolan’s 221st career win was the one he has been waiting his whole life for as the Saranac senior jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second period on his way to a 6-4 win over Warsaw’s Sam Wolf in the 170 lbs. title match at the NYSPHSAA wrestling championships. “I’ve worked my whole life to do this and it finally came true.” Nolan said.

Carson Reeve’s diving catch at the end of Ticonderoga’s game ag a i n st C o op e r stow n preser ved a no-hitter, win and state championship for the Ticonderoga varsity baseball team, as Michael DuShane and Bryce Gautreau combined to throw seven innings of no-hit ball. “We have been together since little league and just to have this moment right now is unbelievable. I have been waiting for this my whole life,” said DuShane.
3 RED STORM rolls competiton 4 DUFFIELD earns state gold Peter Fogarty placed third, Jamse Catania fifth, Andrew Fgogrty eighth, Micah McCulley 16th and Tucker Jackobe 31st as the Saranac Lake boys cross country team defended their Class C state title with an impressive 28 points. “We did not expect to see a score like that,” said Catania.
As Cameron Duffield crossed the finish line, he pumped his fists to each side, celebrating a goal he had worked for since seventh grade, having claimed a state championship in running the 400 hurdles in a time of 53.69. “After I hit the first six hurdles in stride I was pretty confident after that. I really wanted this goal,” said Duffield, who finished the event with four medals at states.

The play of the season in perhaps the game of the season, Moriah’s Matt Diehl stepped in front of Jesse Griffin with time expiring in a 22-22 game, inteceprting the ball and returning it 85 yards to win the Class D state quarterfinal against Warrensburg. “It was the best feeling ever to do it for my brothers,” said Diehl.
Over 3,000 made their way into the Plattsburgh State Field House March 6 to watch Glens Falls and Syracuse commit Joseph Girard III entertain in the Class B regional semifinals as the Indians scored a 77-57 win over Section VII champ Plattsburgh High. “It was amazing,” senior Zach Bieber said, “I thought we played really well and did the best job we could on him. There were times he would get the ball and go right by me. He’s a great player.”

SCHWOEBEL hits for EAGLES’ title 9 final 10 DECADE sweep for EAGLES
PANTHERS dispatch CARDS
Shawna McIntosh got the ground ball she needed for the final out of the game as Crown Point scored a 5-3 win over perennial power Fort Ann in the Class D regional finals, making their second trip to the final four, taking the lead with a three-run sixth inning.
Tied at 37-37 with 1.7 seconds remaining in the Section VII/Class D girls title game, eighth grader Abbey Schwoebel made one free throw, giving the Westport Eagles a 38-37 win over Bolton and their 20th sectional title in the final season in program history. “It was just so amazing because it is the last year of Westport basketball and we were able to make history,” said senior Kaeli Brack.
In a matchup of four state titles and eight final four appearances, it was Lake George who used a 19-9 fourth quarter to score a 54-46 win over Moriah in a classic regional final between two of the top boys basketball programs of the past decade in the state. “This game was a dog fight. This was definitely one of the hardest games we have played all season,” said Cameron Orr.
The Beek ma ntow n va rsit y g i rls bowling team completed a decade long sweep of holding the Section VII title in their sport, as Morgan Brunet led the Eagles with a 1,204 series. “It’s a pressure you hold with you as you bowl because you know how long the streak has been and you do not want to let anyone down,” Kylie Hilborne said.
Saranac Lake PSA going national By Keith Lobdell STAFF WRITER
SARANAC LAKE | At a time of year where many parents and families went to winter concerts, let us set the stage. The band is warmed up and ready to go as the director taps his baton on the music stand. Next, the music begins. “Hey conductor, how about something new you played that last year,” yells out one parent from the stands. “Where’s my kids solo,” shouts another.
almost 28,000 views on YouTube and will soon be getting more thanks to a national campaign by the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS).
UNIQUE CONCEPT
Athletic Director Eric Bennett, who stars as one of the parents in the video, said the concept of the video came from going to a school play. “I remember thinking to myself this is great,” he said. “The audience is 100-percent supportive. It was really cool to see the enthusiasm on the kids faces, the support of the parents, and I just thought to myself what a juxtaposition if you thought of a
CREATING THE PSA Bennett said once the concept was formed, he went to Sullivan about creating a professional video for the PSA. “He told me he gets pitched ideas all the time and he loved this one,” Bennett said. “From there, he was willing to do our district a favor by producing something at a minimal cost to us. After we met, he did some writing on the concept and we hashed it out.” “I had just moved back to the area from Los Angeles building up my career and I’m always looking for projects to do here,” Sullivan said. “When I met with Eric, I loved the concept
contains a message, and I was happy we were able to join on this project and have it check all the boxes.”
GOING NATIONAL
After the release of the PSA, it was shown to the state athletic association (NYSPHSAA) and executive director Robert Zayas. “He is good friends with Mark Koski at NFHS,” said Bennett. “I was invited to the USA football conference and I met Mark personally and we discussed the PSA and the potential to do more at some point. We are letting NFHS use it because we think it is a nice message and we are excited to have that national exposure.” “Robert and I worked together in New Mexico and he is my best friend,” said Koski, who serves as the executive director of the NFHS Network, which streams games online throughout the United States. “He had connected me with Eric and I took a peek at the PSA and was very interested in it,” Koski said. “I was really excited about what they were doing on a local level and I wanted to look into expanding it to a national level. It is important to get fan behavior under control for officials, for coaches and for the better overall experience for the students on the field and in the stands.” Koski said the video will be incorporated into the NFHS “My Reason Why” and “Becoming and Official” campaigns. Bennett added he hoped the success with this PSA would lead to more chances for the school and athletic department to show sportsmanship through media messages. “I’m hoping at some point to be able to do some more, because we have some nice concepts to touch on dealing with the art world, referees and other general character concepts throughout athletics,” he said. To view the video, visit youtube.com and search “Saranac Lake Sportsmanship PSA.” ■

Yet, that is the premise of the public service announcement video made by the Saranac Lake High School Athletic Department, with parents yelling a variety of verbal attacks at the band and its director before reading: “If you wouldn’t say it at a recital, don’t say it at a game.” That phrase is followed by the tagline, “Sportsmanship. Every day. Everywhere. #classandcharacter.” Made a year ago with the help of local director Kirk Sullivan, the PSA has received
parent that felt their kid was not getting their due, if they acted the same way we see some do at sporting events.” Bennett said the more he thought about the experience, the more parallels he was able to draw between performance arts and sporting events. “When you look at it, a school play is an open competition for the lead parts and I am sure there are some kids who feel they deserve more, or their parents might feel that. I thought it was an interesting concept to think about that in the perspective of a sporting contest.”
and thought it was really clever. We were able to write a script and get storyboards done and get a crew of five or six from the Burlington and New York City areas to make the video. In all, it went pretty seamlessly.” Bennett added the making of the video also became an educational experience. “We brought all the kids in for the production of it which was a great chance for them to see what goes into the production and how much work is involved. It surpassed my expectations for how it was going to work out.” “It’s hard to have something as short as this that contains a compelling story and
