SARANAC LAKE | It’s entirely possible myths and legends, new and ancient, could arrive with Saranac Lake Winter Carnival this weekend. Maybe unicorns or winter faeries from the forests: a griffi n or minotaur, or Zeus or p Aphrodite? Merlin? Maybe Champ will make an appearance, too? The theme heralds the 2020 edition :dition nh r'l l 1n .n. of the oldest running Winter Carnival in ththe nation, established at Saranac Lake with roots dating to a fancy dress winter party in 1897 that expanded to the Pontiac Club Carnival in 1898. The rest, as it goes, is the stuff of legend. “Myths and Legends” was one of several theme ideas gathered from community last spring, the suggestion of Petrova Elementary School second-grader Julia Walkow. “I think that this year’s theme is going to inspire a lot of people to dress in costume of their favorite myth or legend, since I think most people have one or many,” Carnival spokeswoman Colleen O’Neill told the Sun.

WILLSBORO | The guild working to build a Center for the Arts + Innovation here are putting their efforts on wheels. The organization, Makers Guild Inc, formally received non-profit status in 2019 and won two grants, one Essex County Decentralization Grant and another from the Glen and Carol Pearsall Adirondack foundation for $1,400. The monies will be used to host a Meet the Makers Series, according to Kathryn Reinhardt, member of the board of directors. Funding will also be used to create a mobile

makers’ space, a shop on wheels that can bring equipment, supplies, tables, chairs and other gear to events, open markets and schools, inspiring community to join the Makeboro team. “We hope it will pull other makers from the community, “ Reinhardt said. “We want to give everyone a platform to share their work.”

The guild purchased the vacant IGA building, once a grocery store in Willsboro, in 2016 with the long-term goal of refurbishing and restoring the space as a public work space, like a community center with tools. See MAKEBORO » pg. 4

NORTH HUDSON | Forest rangers with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recently rescued an injured 67-yearold New Jersey man from the Dix Mountain Wilderness. According to DEC reports, the Towaco, New Jersey, hiker fell while climbing a slide at Macomb Mountain and broke his shoulder. The call came into dispatch at 3:21 a.m. on Jan. 14. “The caller stated that his hiking partner had broken his shoulder after a short distance fall on the Macomb Slide in the Dix range,” DEC said. The caller had to leave his fellow hiker alone to walk out for help.

SARANAC LAKE | There will be many tributes to Republican Sen. Betty Little in 2020 as she completes her 18th and final year in the state senate. That’s the price of having helped so many people. Last Thursday, a packed ballroom at the Hotel Saranac turned out to thank Little and wish her a happy retirement. “When I was a supervisor, when I was important, I had my own parking space,” said former North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi, as he surveyed the packed house. “Today I had to park at Ray Brook and take an Uber.” Tupper Lake Mayor Paul Maroun quipped that Little was able to succeed where he has failed: “You’ve brought my whole village board out together,” he said. Little was honored during the annual reception of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism, which has worked with Little on multiple projects through the years. The event drew politicians and well-wishers from across the North Country — even some whose jurisdictions were no longer in Little’s district. As a parade of mayors and supervisors came to the podium to pay tribute, a common thread emerged — that Little’s style avoided the rancor that’s infected modern politics, and kept the focus on helping the people she represented. “She is a real lady, a mensch,” said Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau. “When I worked with her it was an honorable and pleasurable experience every time.” “She has heart,” Maroun said. “Politicians today

“There are so many myths and legends out there from ancient times to today. I’m sure we’ll see a lot of unicorns, bigfoots, yetis, Lake Champlain monsters, Greek mythology characters and other fun interpretations. “I’m also looking forward to seeing how people make it their own, and use their imagination to invent a unique creature. It’s a really wide open theme as far as possibilities.” Carnival buttons and posters are illustrated with artwork by Garry Trudeau, Doonesbury cartoonist, and a descendant of Dr. Edward Trudeau, the famed doctor that worked to cure tuberculosis. Uniquely collectible, Trudeau’s button artwork has Gonzo surprised to see a mysterious hand thrusting a sword up from beneath frozen waters, the icy hole marked by a rainbow. The buttons and are sold for $5 at area shops, posters are $10 and available at restaurants, banks and grocers and at the Winter Carnival headquarters, 193 River St.

Some of them don’t even care if there is a hospital in the region. Betty Little does.”. The district is losing a great representative.” “People call her a politician, but I call her a statesman who is always thinking of the next generation,” Politi said. “Politics is about partnerships, and my best partner was always Betty Little.” Little said she will miss the job and the people she has worked with. “You can’t get more blessed than I have been,” she said. But is approaching retirement with a sense of relief and the freedom that comes with being able to speak her mind without couching her remarks

in a politically guarded way. After two previous careers as teacher and mother, Little said that when she announced her retirement she received a text from her son, saying “Not bad for Act 3.” It is an act that includes a broad territory where few public projects and initiatives do not have Little’s fingerprints on them. When a problem arose, Betty Little was almost always the first person called. When an Adirondack issue came up in Albany, said Hamilton County Chairman Bill Farber, “The first thing people would ask in, ‘What does Betty Little think?’ She has that kind of respect.” Little thanked those who spoke for their kind words and told the room, “You are not going to be my constituents anymore, you are going to be my friends.” ■

Human Power Planet Earth will be providing different types of ice sport equipment that people can try out. This event was a huge success last year and we expect a bigger crowd this year as it’s more well-known and now has races to offer too.”

Ice Palace, an edifice built with blocks of ice cut from Pontiac Bay on Lake Flower. With cold air dug in, first blocks were cut from the frozen lake on a zero degree morning. They started at a foot to 14 inches in thickness, growing as the bitter snap extended through last week. The palace was designed with curvature in its walls this year and is surrounded by mythic creatures and local legends cut from ice. “The ice carvings are going to be very cool,” O’Neill said. “I’ve peeked at the sketches and all I can say is people are going to love them! And the Ice Palace design this year is going to be very different from past years: It’s not a rectangle shape, it’s got some interesting angles, multiple towers, staircases to wind around inside, and we’re making a larger Ice Palace in terms of footprint on the site. So, there will be more of everything to enjoy.”

Dr. Erin Pratt Schroeder, a 1996 graduate of Westport Central School who is currently fourth on the all time Section VII girls scoring list at 1,667 points, stars along side her husband, Dr. Ben Schroeder, and sons Charlie and Chase in “Heartland Docs, DVM,” now airing Saturdays at 10 p.m. “It’s crazy to know it is finally happening, but a great kind of crazy,” Schroeder said. “The show really showcases our veterinary careers and what we do out here in the midwest, and what it is like to be a family and work together.” The Schroeders run Cedar County Veterinary Services in Hartington, Neb., a practice they took over from Ben’s father, Dr. John Schroeder. “It chronicles the legacy of taking over the business from Ben’s father,” Erin said. “We want to showcase and share the compassion that people have for animals and the relationships that we have with our clients and our clients have for our patients.”

FAMILY AFFAIR

Along with Erin and Ben, the show also features their sons, Charlie and Chase. “We’re not sure what our boys will do but they will have the chance to continue on in the veterinary field if they choose,” Erin said. “We are happy to have the kids involved. Hopefully, this will be a fun way for families to interact and enjoy each other.” Both children have followed after their mother in one respect, sharing a love for basketball. “Charlie had a great game with 18 points and 14 rebounds, an awesome game to watch,” she said of a recent night at the court. “Chase is in eighth grade and can dunk a volleyball. We want to give them lots of opportunities and see where the chips fall.”

Erin Pratt Schroeder, a graduate of Westport Central School, excelled in basketball, finishing her high school career as the fourth leading scorer in girls Section VII history (1.667) before going to play basketball at Syracuse. File photo

LIKE HOME Schroeder said the Hartington community has some similarities to her hometown and North Country area. “We have not great winters back in Westport and we get those kind of things here,” she said. “There’s wind, tornadoes and lots of fluctuations in temperature. We care for large animals and small animals. “It is a really small place, like Westport and the surrounding communities. We are two hours away from a specialist so we end up treating the animals of the community.”

LOVE OF ANIMALS

Growing up in Westport, Schroeder said

her love for animals and the veterinary practice flourished. “Mrs. Knox was our kindergarten teacher in Westport, and I remembered the paper — my mom saved it — which had the question of what do you want to be when you grow up, and the answer was veterinarian,” she said. “I used to sneak salamanders in the house and set them up in my Barbie pool.” Schroeder added there were many mentors in her life as well growing up. “I was very much into horses and Dr. Dodd gave me one of my first jobs helping at her horse barn,” she said. “I did a lot of work with the Russells at their clinic. I had phenomenal local mentors who gave me the opportunity to get that experience, make sure this was what I wanted to do and help me along the path, and I am forever grateful for those opportunities. They were always so welcoming and allowed me to be part of that.” She also said her time as a member of the Westport girls varsity team, a dominant force in Section VII and Class D during her time, helped shape her life. “Coach (Tom) Beauvais was just an amazing mentor and instilled the work ethic and determination to go for the greater goal, and those lessons have carried me through rough spots to get me to the point where I am in my life over and over again,” she said. “My mom and dad are out here now for the premier and that has been the most wonderful experience to share this with them.”

We were engaged two weeks after we met and got married four months later and it has been 19 years this fall. When it is right, it’s right.” After school, the Schroeders moved to Nebraska, where they worked in Dr. John Schroeder’s practice until it was eventually turned over to the couple. ■ — This is an abridged version. Following Westport, Schroeder signed to play college ball at Syracuse University but always knew that was not where her schooling would end. “I always knew after Syracuse I wanted to go to veterinarian school, and I got accepted to go to Kansas State,” she said. “Ben was a

Initial work reclaimed the building’s exterior, until 2018, when winter damage to the roof set the project back. The building had been vacant for a very long time without heat and without insulation. “The building got hit with storm damage last winter and parts of the roof were torn up,” founding board member Beverly Eichenlaub told the Sun last week. The unused building already had water damage inside. “A simpler repair got bigger,” Eichenlaub said. “We recognize there is a lot of impatience with progress, but it’s really an uphill battle,” Eichenlaub said. “We’ve been working to raise funds to replace the roof, a cost of approximately $100,000, but that would just get us a roof. It’s a building that’s been vacant for a long time and it’s a very heavy lift. We’ve set a strategy for the building, concluding that we could use the front bay, about one third of the building, and put the first programs in place.” Eichenlaub, who is a design architect, is sure the building can be reclaimed and repurposed. The total cost for complete renovation would range widely,

Published by Denton Publications, Inc.

depending on what they do, Reinhardt said, from $100,000 to $1 million. “The goal is to be able to use the building year-round. Right now it doesn’t have any insulation,” Eichenlaub said.

It could be developed for welders, carpenters, digital fabrication, vocational arts,” she said. “It will depend on who gets involved. I truly believe this will be transformational for the community.”

The Makers Guild is ready to launch a capital campaign that would take renovation in steps. “We’ve found a way of phasing that might be realistic,” Eichenlaub said. Phase One would exact use for of the front third of the building, seasonally. Phase Two would insulate the structure and install heating equipment for year-round use. Phase Three would bring the property into full use, with areas specified for various workshops, depending on how community chooses to use it. And that input will derive from community interest. “This winter, we are getting programs going so people can start to engage with the facility,” Eichenlaub said. “We see this project as one open to the whole community, an incubator for innovation and small business development.

It has been a heavy lift. According to the Makers Guild 990 non-profit tax records, contributions through 2018 remained at $85,524, of which $80,000 represents the land and buildings, ie. the old IGA property. Going into 2019, the guild reported cash and savings of $1,892 and expenses, such as mailings, filing for 501C3 status, of less than $4,000. The Makers Guild hosted several community workshops and Fix-It Days in downtown Willsboro. They won two grants in 2019. And outreach continues. “Our immediate strategy is to try to engage people through programs that might draw in other makers,” Reinhardt told the Sun. ■ — This is an abridged version. The hiker was brought to a local hospital by ambulance. ■

2019 Bipartisan Results

By Dan Alexander

prescription drugs. I worked in Congress to successfully deliver the permanent repeal of numerous healthcare taxes that have exploded costs for patients. I advocated and voted for the repeal of the Cadillac tax, which was a 40% excise tax on employer-provided health insurance plans. This tax significantly raised healthcare costs for both employers and their employees. In addition, after years of fighting, I helped lead Congress in finally repealing the medical device tax, which ballooned the cost of lifesaving medical devices and innovations. Congress also repealed the health insurance tax. Each of these taxes contributed to significant financial strain for many North Country families, especially seniors. I was proud to vote to repeal all of these taxes as a major step toward expanding high quality and affordable healthcare. I am committed to working across the aisle to deliver bipartisan results to lower the cost of prescription drugs. I introduced the Lower Costs More Cures Act, a package of over 40 provisions previously introduced to lower out-of-pocket spending, ensure new medicines and cures are not heavily taxed, strengthen transparency and accountability, and champion competition in the medical community. Each provision has bipartisan support. Additionally, I cosponsored the Lowering Prescription Drug Costs and Extending Community Health Centers and Other Public Health Priorities Act. This bill is a combination of three bills that all work to prohibit big pharmaceutical companies from engaging in anti-competitive conduct to prevent generic versions of prescription drugs from entering the marketplace.

GUEST COLUMNIST

It’s Sunday afternoon, Jan. 26, and I just learned of the tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and seven other individuals yet to be named in a helicopter accident in California. Perhaps like you, I felt like I had just lost a dear friend. I’ve never met Kobe but enjoyed watching him on television play in the NBA. Kobe always impressed me as one of the good guys with great respect for his sport, his family, and as an individual, he frequently gave back generously to others less fortunate. I heard an interview later in the afternoon with announcer Jim Gray when he asked Kobe, right after he played his last game, how he wanted to be remembered after retiring? Kobe’s response was a simple one. “I want to be remembered as a fortunate but talented over-achiever.” I’m sure by now if you didn’t know much about Kobe Bryant on Sunday when the news broke, by now you’ve heard plenty. But as I sit here tonight pondering a topic, I can’t help but think about how one person could touch so many lives in a short 41 years. Born a kid like all the rest of us with a blank slate on life, he had a deep desire and physical traits to play the game, but even the most talented fall short along the way to success. Money and talent at a young age have derailed and destroyed many lives over the years. While brash and competitive, Kobe focused on his profession and family life while avoiding the pitfalls that ensnare so many with talent like his. While sports in general and the NBA provide a big platform from which to become well know, the name Kobe is known around the globe and not just for his skills on the basketball court, but for being a man, an idol for others to emulate. So, why should anyone feel badly over the loss of Kobe Bryant, a man who had everything one could possess here on Earth? It’s really pretty simple. Because everything he had, he shared with all of us. We cheered when he won, cried when he lost; we admired him for the way he conducted his life and now we feel a deep loss knowing he was taken from us far too soon when he had so much more to give the world. While we mourn his passing, we can also pass along some of the joy he shared with us by living life to the fullest and touching those around us in the way he did. Rest in peace, Kobe. ■

As we kick off 2020, I wanted to update you on the important work that my Congressional office has been able to accomplish on your behalf over the past year. While the pace of the national news coverage can be overwhelming at times, I am proud to have continued my laser focus on representing my constituents in New York’s 21st district throughout the year with many legislative results that have significant local impacts.

CONSTITUENT CASEWORK AND COMMUNITY GRANTS

My offices are always devoted to assisting constituents with federal casework and helping them recover earned benefits throughout the year. My offices received over 4,000 constituent phone calls throughout 2019, recovered $602,141 in VA benefits, $406,511 in social security benefits, and $532,237 in miscellaneous funds, which includes things like tax refunds and retirement benefits. Additionally, my office has favorably closed 503 constituent cases, spanning across all 12 counties in my district. I also announced over $52 million in grant funding from government agencies that was awarded to communities for projects throughout the district. I was also proud to participate in my 1000th district constituent outreach event in August of this past year – the Bassmaster Tournament on the St. Lawrence River! North Country families continue to see skyrocketing healthcare monthly premiums and deductibles; we must continue to focus on bipartisan proposals to lower the cost of healthcare and

Lastly, this year’s appropriations package included huge wins and increases in funding for critical North Country programs such as the Lake Champlain Basin Program and the Northern Border Regional Commission. As co-chair of the Northern Border Caucus, I was proud to advocate for the approved $25 million that will provide infrastructure and economic development grant opportunities to each of our district’s 12 counties. As January comes to a close, I am looking forward to continuing my important work in Congress on your behalf as the chief advocate for the hardworking families of New York’s 21st district. It is a privilege to serve. ■

BE A CENSUS TAKER

The U.S. Census Bureau is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

In addition, the opioid crisis has been devastating to upstate New York, especially among our rural communities. As a member of the Heroin Task Force, I was proud to be a co-leader of the Opioid Workforce Act, which will provide Medicare support for an additional 1,000 graduate medical school residency positions to combat the opioid crisis throughout the country.

To the Editor: I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at UVM-Elizabethtown Community Hospital during our loved one’s final days. Dr. Halloran and the nurses on duty days and nights treated us with kindness and compassion above and beyond what we could have hoped for. They not only took care of the patient, but showed tender loving kindness to his family. UVM-Elizabethtown Community Hospital has served us many times over the past several years, from Emergency room visits to rehab care after surgeries, always with the best care we could imagine. This hospital is a gem in our community and we are indeed fortunate that it is here for us. — Luvie Tuller and family, Elizabethtown ■

To the Editor: 1. Westport and Elizabethtown build new gymnasiums. 2. State operating aid cut back. 3. Forced school merger. 4. Building new school. 5. Westport and Elizabethtown left with three school buildings to maintain. 6. State operating aid will be cut back again at a later date. 7. Cost of employment will continue to increase. This doesn’t make sense to me. We’ve always supported our schools and its teachers. — Richard M. Sherman, Westport ■

Economic prosperity and job creation continues to be a top priority for

hardworking North Country families, but many of these young families continue to struggle with the rising cost of childcare. I was proud to introduce the bipartisan Advancing Support for Working Families Act, which would give families the option to advance up to $5,000 of their Child Tax Credit (CTC) in the first year of a child’s life or the first year a family adopts a child. Child-related expenses can be particularly high during a child’s first year, so families should be free to utilize the CTC when they need it most. This bipartisan effort delivers a much-needed option for new parents across the North Country.

1936 - 2020 ESSEX | Stan Tuller, 83, of Essex and formerly Peru, passed away at UVM Elizabethtown Community Hospital on January 20, 2020, after a long struggle with heart disease. He was born in Royalton, Vt., the first son of Stanley and Mabel Tuller. He attended schools in South Royalton and was active in Boy Scouts, achieving the level of Eagle Scout.

When your family suffers a loss, we want to help you let your friends and neighbors know. Each week we will publish a list of Death Notices at no charge. These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.

After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where duty took him to Germany as a radio intercept operator. While there he led a boy scout troop in the Eastern Area Command. After his honorable discharge he became a counselor and waterfront director at Camp Pinnacle for Boys in Lyme, N.H. While there he met and later married Luvie Fowler. His next venture was attending Castleton State College, where he earned his BS degree in education. He taught at Sharon Elementary School in Vermont, Shenendehowa Central School in Elnora, N.Y., and Dix Avenue School in Hudson Falls, N.Y. Stan then returned to his education by earning his MS degree in counseling and Certificate of Advanced Study in Administration at Plattsburgh State University. From then on he was a pioneer in developing the Elementary Counseling Program at Peru Central School, where he helped many children and families until his retirement in 1991. He also was an adjunct instructor of counseling techniques at Plattsburgh State University. Stan and Luvie were married 60 years and raised three children who were always the light of his life. After retiring he moved to Essex, N.Y., where he served as Dock Master and enjoyed “the best porch in town,” where

To the Editor: I have the privilege of serving on the annual United Way campaign team. The team helps spread the news about the great work that the United Way and its 40 partner agencies provide to our community each and every day. They touch the lives of 80,000 people right here in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. No matter how big or small the challenge might be the United Way is ready to take action. The stories of how they have helped individuals in their time of need are both heartwarming and memorable. Please help to spread the story of the great work that our local United Way offers. Tell your colleagues, friends and neighbors that they are here to help. A simple call to 518-5630028 will set you on the path to resolving whatever challenge you might be facing. I urge you to consider donating to this year’s campaign. Every dollar counts! 100% OF YOUR DONATION DOLLARS STAY LOCAL! You can donate by calling the United Way, visiting their website at www.unitedwayadk.org or by simply stopping by the office located at 45 Tom Miller Road in Plattsburgh. With your contribution, you are helping to make better lives right here in your own community. Thank you in advance for sharing the United Way story and/or for participating in this year’s campaign. Together we make the North Country a better place by supporting and helping one another. — Lisa VanNatten, Plattsburgh ■

Adorable little Fred was born here at the shelter five months ago. The rest of his litter have gone on to good homes and momma cat is being adopted, too, so we’d really like to find Fred his forever home soon! Until then, this cutie will continue to annoy his mom, play with his buddy, Radar, and try to escape the kitten room any chance he gets. He’s a handful but such a sweet little scamp, he’s captured all our hearts here at the shelter. Sadly, Fred was found to have a deformed diaphragm, which means Fred’s lungs are compressed. He tires himself out faster than the average kitten, but after he takes a quick break from playing, he’s up and at it again! In every other way, Fred is a normally feisty and fun kitten. He is not on any medications and has no problems running, playing or being just like every other young cat. He is very lovable and adores being cuddled, when picked up

Youthful Patriots continue to grow in title hunt By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

CLINTONVILLE | The AuSable Valley girls basketball team took some lumps to start the new year, as any youthful team may. However, it is a team that has been together for one year already at the varsity level and is building upwards in Division II of the CVAC, scoring a 43-33 win over Moriah Jan. 28, sweeping the season series. “The new year turned and we were 1-5 going into this game and we really needed this,” said Patriots coach Roger Long. “We really needed this for confidence, we needed this for chemistry and we needed this for the girls to feel good about themselves. We need to win out and we need to get some help.” Leading 29-27 midway through the fourth, the Patriots used a 12-1 run to seal the victory, started when the teams youngest and newest player — eighth grader Reese Shambo — connected on a pair of baskets, including a put-back layup.

Reese Shambo has made an immediate impact on the AuSable Valley girls varsity roster, scoring 12 points and grabbing key rebounds in the Patriots 43-33 win over Moriah.

GOATS, PATRIOTS fare well at indoor

AuSable Valley’s Lily Potthast led Moriah/Boquet Valley’s Sophia McKiernan in the 1,500 and 1,000 at the CVAC indoor track meet Jan. 25, while the M/ BV team of Landon Peters, Denali Garnica, Emery Tausinger and Gage Perry won the 3,200 relay and Zane Moussa of AVCS placed third in the weight throw.
