The jury charged David J. Bova, 30, with second-degree murder and seconddegree attempted murder. Bova was also charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fi rst-degree criminal use of a fi rearm and second-degree menacing. Bova is accused of intentionally shooting Magen Goyette on March 13 as she rode in the passenger seat of a black pickup truck driven by her mother, Michelle, on Silver Lake Road. ELIZABETHTOWN | Public health in Essex County continues to improve. Essex County was recently ranked among the top 10 counties in New York state for health outcomes, a designation that signals continued improvement to the county’s quality- and length-of-life scores. In the last two years, the county has moved up 27 slots in the annual County Health Rankings & Roadmaps released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

The report takes into consideration various indicators of residents’ health behaviors, like adult obesity rates, the number of alcohol-impaired driving deaths and the rate of sexually-transmitted infections. The report also takes into account the availability of health-care services in each county; social and economic factors like high-school graduation rates, the number of children in poverty and instances of violent crime; as well as things that may reflect residents’ physical environment, like air pollution and the number of homes that may be overcrowded, priced highly or lack kitchen or plumbing facilities. “Our high ranking reflects the priority this county has placed on improving the

factors that affect residents’ health,” Essex County Public Health Director Linda Beers said in a statement. “It also shows how important it will be for us to sustain those programs if we want to stay healthy. “The rankings are a testament to the strong collaborations that our organizations and agencies have built over time.”

WORK TO BE DONE

“Although we are doing well in many areas, the rankings show we need to remain vigilant,” Beers said. Essex County’s adult smoking rate, 17 percent, remains higher than the state average of 14 percent.

Sherman goes from Chazy to first-year college program By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

SYRACUSE | Former Willsboro Central School standout Clay Sherman has risen through the coaching ranks quickly. Following assistant coaching stints with Clinton Community College and SUNY Plattsburgh in soccer and basketball, along with a two-year stint as the head coach of

the Chazy boys varsity program, Sherman was recently named the first head coach of the Bryant & Stratton College women’s basketball program in Syracuse. “It’s a brand new program starting in 2019 so I am looking to bring in 15 girls for the first season,” Sherman said of the Bobcats. “It is in the USCAA, so I have scholarships available and I am looking to bring a competitive team in for year one. I am definitely excited.” » Sherman Cont. on pg. 9

Artist gifts library with miniature building replica Hutchins work part of local artists collection By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER

AUSABLE FORKS | The Elizabethtown Library received a gift of craftsmanship recently: a miniature replica of the building on River Street created by local paint and multimedia artist Kim Hutchins. “I wanted to highlight this special addi-

tion to our permanent local artist display,” Library Director Angela Heroux said in a recent interview with The Sun. “This is part of an ongoing effort by the library to showcase the many talents of artists of all ages in writing, art and creativity in our community. This mirror image of our existing building was constructed entirely of cardboard and painted by Kim Hutchins, of Elizabethtown. The attention to detail was so precise he even included the coach lights and electric meter as well as perfectly replicating the lettering on the front of the building,” Heroux said. » Replica Cont. on pg. 3

We are planning to host robotics and design programs in summertime for kids who are in Lake Placid with their parents, whether at the Horse Shows or Ironman or another event.”

By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER

LAKE PLACID | Construction work at Northwood School’s campus on Main Street has begun. Having completed extensive structural review, the school’s board of trustees opted to strengthen the historic building’s framework and masonry, maintaining its original architecture and design as it sits. Northwood Headmaster Michael Maher told The Sun recently that the school has successfully completed efforts to fund the $2.5 million project. Asked if the century-old property proved an impediment in renewed use as a school lecture, events and community maker space, he said they are working to restore the historic edifice. “The structural integrity of the building is sound. We will complete the normal bracing one does, but there are no obstacles to use of an old structure. “When we did the initial design, we realized it would put pressure on the structure, and we went through a phase where demolition was considered.” But the board of trustees ultimately opted not to take it down.

‘ARCHITECTURALLY ELABORATE’

Built in 1915 by Forrest H. Guild, the structure is the center of what late Lake Placid Historian Mary MacKenzie referred to in her work as the Guild Block. A Main Street historical archive created by MacKenzie and continued after her death by

Photo/Northwood School newsman Lee Manchester indicates Guild opened an “excluseive men’s store” at the location. “This is one of the most architecturally elaborate — and best preserved — commercial buildings on Main Street,” MacKenzie wrote of the place at 2495 Main, as she compiled history of each space on Lake Placid’s centerpiece mercantile row. “The building is very much a product of its time, neoclassical in design and constructed of contemporary manufactured materials: ‘patent stone,’ fabricated metal cornice work, and copper storefronts. ... The building possesses a real integrity of design that enhances its already apparent architectural value.“ For many years, it was the storefront for With Pipe and Book, a local bookshop. “My first time to Lake Placid to accept the job at Northwood, I literally was at Starbucks, thinking about curriculum programs. I thought what happens if Northwood bought that building?” Maher said. A century after the structure was built on

Tentatively called “Northwood School on Main,” the campus extension is being built to provide work, classroom and fabrication space for students at the boarding school across Mirror Lake, and also for community access. Their plan, Maher said, incorporates students and adults from the larger region who need space for integration innovation and design work. Already, Northwood has partnered with Lake Placid Central School to expand the private school’s robotics program, Maher said. Collaboration, he said, is what connects community. “It was such a great thing for kids in our theater program that Lake Placid Center for the Arts was willing to share their theater with us,” he said. In that same spirit, Northwood Main envisions sharing space with local entrepreneurs and artists for events, design and build proj-

Target date for opening the new school campus is Oct. 1, Maher said. Contractors from Bette & Cring Construction, of Glens Falls, were retained to oversee the project. “We have a good deal of the work being done by local subcontractors,” Maher said. Asked if Northwood is planning to keep the historic tin ceiling in place, Maher said they are. “We will be doing a lot of reframing on the inside, taking advantage of the wide open spaces installing flexible walls,” he added. The building, in two floors, occupies more than 12,000 square feet of space on Main Street. Tech updates to the property will allow for installation of 3D printers and various tech equipment for robotics. The $2.5 million raised for project came from philanthropic support of Northwood School alumni, families and friends, Maher said in a news release. “This financial commitment to the development of Northwood School on Main exemplifies the sustained support from generous donors to provide diverse academic offerings in top-notch facilities.” The official name of the building will be revealed at a ribbon cutting ceremony next fall. Northwood School is a co-educational boarding school for students in grades nine through 12. Approximately 190 students attend the school in Lake Placid. ■

» Replica Cont. from pg. 1 Kim is the son of Eleanor and the late Walter Hutchins. “He has a wonderful talent both as a painter and in creating these amazing structures. Kim paints on all materials (rock surfaces and wood included) and also makes doll and birdhouses. He is a truly inspiring man,” Heroux said.

‘JUST PICKED IT UP’

The project began in conversations Mrs. Hutchins had with Heroux at the library. “I had mentioned to her that he did this kind of artwork and described the things he made us through the years. Years ago he made doll houses,” Mrs. Hutchins said in an interview. One of them was part of a display in the Adirondack History Museum. “Angela said she would love to have one of the library. I took a picture home and he built it and painted it,” Mrs. Hutchins said. “You wouldn’t think it was built of cardboard when it’s done.” » Bova Cont. from pg. 1

Kim’s artwork is part craftwork, part painting and illustration. He has worked at his home as an artist for more than 30 years. “He is autistic, with Aspberger’s,” Mrs. Hutchins said. “He never had any art lessons, really, he just picked it up,” Mrs. Hutchins said of her son’s gift. “When he was real little he had one of those etch-a-sketches and he wore three of them out,” she chuckled, thinking back. “He also is musically inclined and plays the organ by ear. When he was in fourth grade, his teacher asked us if we knew he played the piano,” Mrs. Hutchins, a former teacher, recalled. “We bought him a small organ and he outgrew that, and then we bought him a real organ. He plays for his own enjoyment.” Kim is also a 35-year employee at Denton Publications, Sun Community News & Printing’s parent company, and currently works in the mailroom and production area. “He has been there since 1984,” Mrs. Hutchins said of Kim’s job. The replica of Elizabethtown Library is part of the local artist’s collection kept at the library at 8256 River St. ■

The DA’s office requested that Bova be held without bail pending further court action. The March 13 shooting death of Magen Goyette on Silver Lake Road in AuSable Forks was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner. Goyette, 30, died of a single gunshot wound to the head, according to District Attorney Andrew Wylie.

Alongside his attorney James Tyner, Bova was arraigned before Hon. William Favreau in Clinton County Court last Wesdnesday. He plead not guilty to each charge. On the second-degree murder charge he is facing a sentence of anywhere from 15 years to life, to 25 years to life, according to the Clinton County District Attorney’s (DA) Office.

The Valley News Sun | April 27, 2019 • 3

Wylie and Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Stitt are prosecuting the case. Tyner, a Latham-based attorney, is representing Bova. ■

» Health Cont. from pg. 1 “With our passage of Tobacco 21, we’ve been leading the way to tackle this problem — and to tackle the emerging threat of youth vaping,” she said, referencing a local law that took effect this January requiring anyone who purchases tobacco products to be at least 21 years old. The county’s rate of chlamydia cases continues to climb. The number of new cases per 100,000 in population increased from 108.6 last year to 129.9 this year. And the report shows that 28 percent of adult residents here are obese, one percent more than last year, and slightly above the state average of 26 percent. Beers said that the department has worked with other local agencies to bring “Well Fed Essex County” and “Creating Healthy Schools and Communities” — initiatives designed to increase access to healthy food and daily physical activity — to residents around the county. “These programs are specifically tailored to ensure that health disparities, and the factors that lead to health inequities, are addressed,” she said. “We want all residents to have a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible.” To view the full 2019 report, visit countyhealthrankings.org. Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

The evolution of rural America

A nation’s wealth has always come from having products to build and sell. That holds true in small communities and By Dan Alexander cities across the country. • PUBLISHER • The dollars need to circulate throughout the community to compound the wealth effect and create jobs and businesses. When wealth is not created, or it is sent off to other places, the wealth effect cannot happen, causing the effect to go in reverse. A community needs a certain amount of service related jobs to function but it also needs some type of production jobs to bring in money from the outside. This can take the shape of many forms, but they must exist to ensure a healthy local economy. I fear what we face today is a large amount of our production is done outside the country, eliminating production jobs in local communities, and many of the small local businesses that kept wealth within communities have been replaced by companies that remove much of the wealth. In the past, when a small business made a profit, that profit was kept in the local community because that is where the owner lived. Now, that profit leaves the community never to be seen again. With less money to circulate within the community, the businesses that depend on people spending their extra dollars have fewer customers and eventually they begin to fade away. These days, in many of our communities out of area corporate businesses, nonprofit organizations and government jobs make up a major part of many local communities. While the jobs generally pay well, what’s missing are the local ownership profits that have diminished. Over the years, we’ve seen small entrepreneurs replaced first by larger regional corporate owners, then larger national firms and now we see the Amazons and Googles of the world taking ownership to the next level. The evolutionary process continues, but what’s lost in the process is where the ownership dollars reside and how those dollars no longer are available to flow within the local communities. Once the local businesses and profits dry up, the population begins to shrink. Retirees relocate, younger workers follow the jobs and the average age of the remaining population continues to grow older. What we are witnessing today will eventually begin to reverse itself when the mega companies are either broken up or are no longer seen nimble enough to meet the needs of the growing population and a restless nation that longs for a simpler life in rural America. The rebirth of the American entrepreneurial spirit will once again seek to reclaim our small villages and communities, and I believe the cycle will begin anew. ■

Last week, we witnessed a tremendous victory for veterans across New York with a measure to expand scholarships at SUNY and CUNY schools for the families of deceased or disabled military personnel. Last Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the Higher Education Services Corporation will finally broaden the Military Enhanced Recognition Incentive and Tribute (MERIT) Scholarship program, which provides the costs of tuition, room and board, and fees to eligible students. The state’s existing MERIT program applied only to the families of veterans who lost their lives or became disabled in a combat situation or while training for a related military operation. Assembly Republicans have long wanted this program to expand and since 2006 have offered legislation that would extend the same financial benefits to families of any veteran killed or disabled while performing their official duties. Last Wednesday’s announcement brought to a conclusion a long and worthy campaign in the legislature. For Gold Star families and all veterans, it brought even more.

To the Editor: I live in the small community of Bolton Landing. I walk all the time and look up and see our beautiful flag flying but sometimes it is torn or faded badly. I stop and ask if our great American flag could be replaced or taken down. It also happens to our missing in action flag which represents our young men and women who have served our country and haven’t been found to return to loved ones. Please — here at least, in our great Adirondacks — fly these flags this Memorial Day with pride and honor. - Rita French, Bolton Landing ■

Reduce animal consumption for Earth Day

To the Editor: April 22 marks a half century of celebrating Earth Days, but do we observe it? Beyond Earth Day there is a growing national debate over the Green New Deal. We can each do our part by reducing our driving, use of electricity and consumption of animals. Why the attack on meat and dairy? A recent article in Nature argues that animal agriculture is a major driver of climate change, air and water pollution and depletion of soil and freshwater resources. Oxford University’s prestigious Food Climate Research Network reports that solving the global warming catastrophe requires a massive shift to plant-based eating. Carbon dioxide is emitted by burning forests to create animal pastures and by operating machinery to grow and transport animals. The more damaging methane and nitrous oxide are released from

Medicare reimbursement must be updated

To the Editor: We’re encouraged to see state governments across the country attempting to address health care costs with policies protecting patients from surprise bills. Vermont is one of 25 states doing so, but it shouldn’t be necessary. A federal solution is needed so that all Americans, no matter their zip code, have coverage when it counts. The reason some patients get a balance bill is the result of a broken reimbursement system, both from government payers and private insurers. For air ambulances, Medicare reimbursement rates haven’t been updated in 20 years, covering a fraction of the actual cost of care. Because more than 70 percent of air medical patients are covered by government payers, the remaining transports (patients with private insurance) must make up for the shortfall. This system is not only unsustainable for patients but also for the air medical providers who are struggling to continue care.

As the father, son, brother and uncle of U.S. military veterans, I know that the Gold Star bill was a personal priority for many New Yorkers. I commend Assemblyman Steve Hawley, who has sponsored the bill for more than a decade, for his persistent commitment to our military heroes. I’m extremely proud of my colleagues in the Assembly Republican Conference for their unwavering commitment to achieving results despite the petty political obstruction experienced too frequently at the Capitol. At the end of the day, this is an incredible victory for the people who deserve it most. The debt owed to our fallen and disabled military heroes can never properly be repaid. But this week, they achieved a small measure of financial help, and a long overdue measure of respect. What do you think? I want to hear from you. Send me your feedback, suggestions and ideas regarding this or any other issue facing New York state. You can always contact my district office at 315-781-2030, email me at kolbb@ nyassembly.gov, find me by searching for Assemblyman Brian Kolb on Facebook and follow me on Twitter. ■ - Brian Kolb is the New York state assemblyman for the 131st district and Assembly minority party leader.

digestive tracts of cattle and animal waste ponds, respectively. Moreover, meat and dairy production dumps more animal waste, fertilizers, pesticides and other pollutants into our waterways than all other human activities combined. It is the driving force behind wildlife extinction. In an environmentally sustainable world, meat and dairy products in our diet must be replaced by vegetables, fruits and grains, just as fossil fuels are replaced by wind, solar and other pollution-free energy sources. Let’s celebrate the observance of Earth Day at our supermarket. - Ashanti Jenkins, Ticonderoga ■

action. With their voices loud and united, they got exactly what they asked for.

The governor made the correct call by expanding the MERIT program. But as they say, “timing is everything,” and the timing of his announcement was not coincidental. It came only after massive public outcry over a terrible vote by liberals in the Assembly, and it demonstrated the powerful voices of veterans around the state. Last week, the MERIT expansion bill (A.2991, Hawley) was rejected in the Assembly’s Committee on Higher Education, essentially ending any hopes of its passage this year. The chair of the committee called the bill “an entitlement.” The 15 Democrats who opposed the bill justified their vote by saying it could not be considered outside the budget due to the financial implications. Both were offensive, hollow arguments. In addition, the same Democrats who voted against expanding scholarships for Gold Star families had just approved $27 million in the state budget to fund tuition assistance for the children of illegal immigrants. The public reaction to Albany’s misplaced priorities was swift, decisive and widespread. The decision to reject expansion of the MERIT program went from a routine committee vote to a national embarrassment, almost overnight. I heard from countless constituents who expressed disgust, dismay and demanded

» Letters Cont. from pg. 4 A federal solution that updates Medicare reimbursement rates for air ambulances would help ensure that providers can continue saving lives and patients aren’t stuck with surprise bills after the fact. Drivers, not intersections, unsafe

To the Editor: In the last year, there has been much written and discussed about the safety of intersections. One such example is the intersection at Route 9 and Water Street in Elizabethtown. If one observes drivers at any intersection, they will note that a very high percentage of drivers do not obey the laws. They don’t obey yield at the signs nor do they come to a complete stop at the stop signs. Many try to beat-out others while rolling through these intersections. In Essex and Willsboro, I have witnessed the same. In Essex, the intersection of Route 22 and Lake Shore Road is an all-way stop. Very few drivers make the complete stop, some barely slow down. In Willsboro, it is the same at Mill Street, Mountain View Drive and the Point Road where they intersect with Route 22. I have even witnessed school buses roll through these stop signs. Cable Com of Willsboro has a live camera that shows three of these intersections on Route 22. Just watch for yourselves on channel 32. Many years ago, Mr. Al Trost taught driver’s education at Willsboro Central and at Elizabethtown Central Schools. He always stressed the importance of safety and the laws at all intersections. He stated, “Stop means a complete stop, look and proceed only when safe to do so. Yield signs mean slow down to observe traffic and proceed only when safe to do so.” I know the local law enforcement is stretched thinly, yet it seems that most drivers have no fear of law enforcement or the potentially deadly consequences they may face while rolling through these intersections. In my opinion, it is not the intersections themselves that are unsafe, it is the careless drivers that bear this responsibility. - Michael MacDougal, Essex ■

Popular trailhead to be closed for much of hiking season By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

KEENE VALLEY | A popular High Peaks trailhead known as The Garden will be closed this spring and summer while the Town of Keene replaces a failing bridge over Johns Brook. In announcing the closure, the town said it would add to shuttle bus runs that take hikers from Marcy Field on Route 73 west of the town to The Garden trailhead. Under the plan, the shuttles would run seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., although the town acknowledged it may have trouble

run plow trucks over it safely.” The town asked for cooperation: “Please respect the closure and don’t park or walk on private property to gain hiking access,” officials said in the release. “Illegally parked cars will be towed. Town employees and DEC rangers will monitor the lot during the week.” According to the Adirondack Almanac, The Garden is so named because of an actual vegetable garden that served as a landmark to hikers many years ago. The parking lot is not particularly large, and it is routinely jam-packed to the point that, as Yogi Berra said, it’s so crowded that no one goes there anymore. A virtual cottage industry has emerged among hikers to predict when spaces might be available. That hiker traffic has spilled onto private land and caused private landowners to complain of trespassing with cars left in driveways or no-parking zones. ■

finding drivers to run the routes. The shuttle fee is $10 U.S., or $13 Canadian. On social media, several hikers, while acknowledging the need for the project, noted that the typical hikes emanating from The Garden are long, and require earlier starts, particularly in the summer heat. For many it’s the trailhead of choice for accessing the Adirondacks Great Range. A detour will allow people with homes above the bridge, along with the shuttle, to bypass the bridge, but the public will be prohibited from taking it. In a release, Keene officials said, “The town is working closely with the DEC and Adirondack Mountain Club to help inform hikers and provide them with access in spite of the temporary closure. The town recognizes that this is a major disruption during the nicest hiking weather, but the bridge replacement is critical. The current bridge is in such poor shape that the town can’t

Rita Mitchell

ELIZABETHTOWN | Rita (Coburn) Mitchell left this world to be with her Lord on April 18, 2019. Rita was 78 years old. She died at her home in Elizabethtown surrounded by her loving family. Rita was always proud to say that she was born at home on Aug. 10, 1940, on the Plank Road in Ellenburg to her loving parents Frank and Beulah (Bessey) Coburn. She was the youngest in her family of three brothers and a sister. Rita married the love of her life, Gary ‘Red’ Mitchell, on Sept. 27, 1959, in Port Henry and enjoyed almost 60 years of marriage. Our wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, sister and aunt led a very full life. Her faith and her family were of utmost importance to her. Rita’s father was an iron ore miner. She lived in Lyon Mountain and Tahawus but grew up in the then thriving town of Mineville. Rita’s life was always full of outdoor activities and her love of kids and animals never wavered. In the mid-1960s, Rita, Gary and their family moved to Vermont. While living in Poultney, Vermont, Rita received her real estate license and later got her New York state license. Rita went on to sell real estate for another 45 years. Rita and Gary were never afraid to try new things. They owned many businesses in the journey. At one point, they purchased a farm in Redford where she enjoyed raising horses, chickens, goats, geese and pigs including her pet pig Penelope Ann Marie Marie that her grandchildren enjoyed hearing many stories about. They built many new homes throughout the years but finally settled in Elizabeth-

PLAY AT THE PLATE:

‘LIT UP THE ROOM’

“Clay came in and just lit up the room with his enthusiasm and drive,” Bryant & Stratton Athletic Director Nick Dimitrievski said. “He really wants to be in this profession and the drive, motivation and work ethic are what we looked at when we decided to take a chance with him.” Sherman was offered the job during the recent MVAC season, but wanted to make sure he was able to stay with the Chazy team and players he had worked with for the past two seasons. “I started with these boys and the kids put in a lot of work,” Sherman said. “We have spent a lot of time together, not only during the season but over the summer playing AAU basketball and traveling together for eight weekends. I told (the college) I had to finish this out, but would do whatever they needed me to do.” “I thought it was very honorable he wanted to stay with the team and finish things up,” Dimitrievski said. “It just added to the picture of who Clay is and why we wanted him.”

Clay Sherman runs the floor for the Willsboro Warriors in 2011. Sherman was a basketball and soccer standout for the Warriors, playing collegiate soccer at SUNY Plattsburgh.

What the college needed from Sherman was a lot of time on the phone — working daily on the recruiting trail, along with one day a week on the Syracuse campus. “I have been doing a lot of recruiting calls and talking on the phone for a lot of the day, introducing myself to the Section III coaches out there and telling them about my program, what I expect and learning about their programs,” Sherman said back in February. “I have been talking to a lot of junior college programs to see if they have players who are interested in continuing their career.” Dimitrievski said Sherman has already proven himself as a recruiter. “He went to New York City on a recruiting trip recently and brought in 36 kids for his first ever visiting recruit session,” Dimitrievski said. “We have been so pleased and excited with the progress, we recently announced the launch

of a JV women’s program, as well.” Sherman recently told the Syracuse-based ML Sports Platter podcast what he was looking for in a recruit. “I am looking to recruit high character kids,” Sherman said. “I want students who are hungry to be highly competitive and continue their education, people who want to win in the classroom and on the court.” Sherman joins a college program with a very similar track record as the Chazy high school program he was at the past two years, “We have been a men’s soccer national champion at the NJCAA level, and have been the USCAA national runner-up in 2015 through 2018,” said Dimitrievski, who also serves as the men’s soccer coach. “Our women’s program was third nationally last season, and we wanted to build on our program’s overall success. We had a successful start to our men’s basketball program this past year, and women’s basketball is the next step.” ■

» Flags Cont. from pg. 10 Light said a ceremonial burn pit with a cover was donated to the legion for this purpose by Lowes Home Improvement in Plattsburgh. “I called and asked if they would assist in financing a burn pit for unserviceable flags, and they asked us to pick one out,” she told the committee. Tryon and Light said boxes for unserviceable American flags are placed at the county Veterans’ Affairs Office in the county complex and at the Town Hall in Elizabethtown. And residents of local towns wishing to properly dispose of old, faded or torn flags can place them in either box.

PROTOCOL

Protocol for “The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags” is outlined in Resolution No. 440, “passed by the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York on Sept. 20-23, 1937,” according to the New York Legion records.

Proper American Flag disposal ceremonies are being coordinated by Newman Tryon, adjutant for the Essex County American Legion, and Betty Light, a past president of American Legion Post 551 Auxiliary. Two events in 2019 will be held on weekend dates near Flag Day and 9/11. Photo by Kim Dedam

Formal flag retirement protocol includes an inspection of each flag by a sequence of commanders with the Legion Post assembled outdoors.

HOME IMPROVEMENT GUIDE TO REPLACING HOME SIDING Consumers who do their homework will get the best value for their investments.

F

ew home improvements can transform a home more than the installation of new siding. Replacing siding can be a costly venture, but the right siding will maintain its appeal for years to come. Updated siding can improve home’s energy value by enabling owners to save on heating and cooling costs. A new design and color also can improve a home’s property value and set it apart from neighboring properties. According to the Professional Builder’s Home Exteriors Survey, exterior design and materials used are a top priority for new home buyers. Project costs depend on the size of the home as well as which siding material homeowners choose. Considering new siding is a major renovation, it pays to get the job done right. CHOOSE A QUALIFIED CONTRACTOR It is important for consumers to do their research when it comes to siding materials and contractors. A contractor who takes shortcuts or improperly installs the siding may void a manufacturer’s warranty. Always ask family members and friends for recommendations before choosing a contractor, and check out each prospective contractor’s work for yourself. Interview more than one contractor and compare both their costs and what they offer. Ask plenty of questions of the contractors, and avoid those who try hard-sell methods. Questionable contractors may try strategies like a promise of a considerable discount if you “act now” or scare tactics that your home is unsafe in its present condition. Be sure the contractor carries general liability insurance as well as workers’ compensation insurance for their subcontractors. Ask for a license number as well and verify its accuracy. SELECT A DURABLE MATERIAL Siding comes in all types of materials — from wood to plastic to fiber cement — but vinyl is among the most popular due to cost and availability. Research how well particular brands of siding stand up to conditions and which are the least likely to crack, warp or discolor. Find this information from online reviews or through consumer advocacy groups. Also remember, vinyl and other synthetic materials have improved and can now mimic the look of many other materials for a fraction of the cost.

Finding a qualified contractor is an important component to any siding project.

CALCULATE HOW MUCH YOU NEED Before you price out siding with contractors, estimate how much you will need for your house. Consumer Reports suggests multiplying the height times the width of each rectangular section of your house in feet, going by what you can measure from the ground, to determine their areas. Multiply the approximate height and width of gables and other triangular surfaces and divide each total by two. Then add all the totals. To allow for waste, don’t subtract for doors, windows or other areas that won’t be covered. Finally, divide the total square footage by 100 to estimate how many squares of siding you will need. A square represents 100 square feet. Knowing how much you need can save you money. Vinyl siding can completely transform the look of a home and make it more energy efficient. ■

pring cleaning is a ritual in many homes, though some might be forgetting to address an area of their homes that can be especially vulnerable to insect infestations. According to PestWorld.org, kitchen cabinets and pantries used to store spices and baking items, such as flour, can make for inviting hideouts for various types of pests. These unwelcome guests include beetles, Indian meal moths and ants. To remedy this issue or prevent insects from becoming an issue, discard stale spices or dated baking items. Once such items have been removed from the cabinets and pantry and discarded, wipe down the interior of the spaces before installing fresh shelf paper. If the critters didn’t make their presence known in the cabinets, that doesn’t mean they haven’t made your kitchen home over the winter. Some might have opted to spend their winters behind appliances, including the stove and the refrigerator. As a result, it’s best to pull these appliances off the wall each spring, sweeping or vacuuming the dust and crumbs you find before mopping the floors. ■

Must-haves for an amazing kitchen remodel Kitchen remodels are among the most popular home renovation projects, whether they consist of swapping out cabinet hardware or doing major demolition. Due to the sheer amount of time families spend in the kitchen, not to mention the number of tasks performed in this space, it is easy to see why Remodeling magazine consistently ranks kitchen renovations as projects that will enable homeowners to recoup a high percentage of their investments. In the magazine’s 2018 “Cost vs. Value” report, midrange major kitchen remodels costing an average of $63,829 recouped 59 percent of that investment. When investing in a kitchen project, it is important to incorporate items that are coveted. • Deep, double sinks: Having a double sink enables you to soak

dishes in one side and then wash on the other. It also makes it easy to wash and prep produce for meals. • Kitchen island and bar stools: Even though many meals are enjoyed around the table, there’s something to be said for the convenience of a kitchen island and some well-placed bar stools for quick breakfasts or snacks. • Smart kitchen storage: Work with a contractor to include storage solutions built into cabinetry and the pantry. Slide-out shelving, nooks for a paper towel roll and customdesigned areas to store stand mixers and other necessities can make kitchens more functional. • Outdoor access: If possible, design a kitchen so it is easy to access the backyard via sliding doors. This can make outdoor entertaining or even coffee on the deck much easier. • Under-cabinet lighting: Fixtures

• Convenient warming drawer: This appliance provides backup to the oven. It’s a slide-out drawer that can keep prepared foods out of the way and warm until they are ready to be served. This is particularly handy for holidays and other entertaining. • Beverage station: Designate one area of the kitchen to beverages, such as coffee and tea. Or make the area an informal bar. This can limit traffic in the kitchen to a single area. Kitchen remodels are exciting to envision, and several choices can make these high-traffic spaces even more coveted. ■
