Boquet Valley Post 551 is 91 years young
Historian, vets seek gravestone for Battle of P’burgh soldier
2019 marks century since American Legion founded nationwide SALUTING SERVICE
This is the first in a series of stories honoring the 100th anniversary of the American Legion. The pieces will run periodically throughout the year, and they will run in each edition of The Sun, wherever you live. When these folks were sent, they just went; it didn’t matter where they were from or where they were going. They served us all. We salute their service. ■
Graves in the Boquet Cemetery mark the final resting place for many of Elizabethtown’s early settlers. The arched stone, the second one left of the tree in this photo is what remains of the stone placed for Benjamin Holcomb, Esq., seen intact in the adjacent photo taken some decades earlier and kept among Boquet Cemetery records. ELIZABETHTOWN | As the American Legion celebrates its centennial this year, Boquet Valley Post 551 marks 91 years of service to veterans and community here. The Boquet Valley Post was the ninth legion to form in Essex County, and received its charter on May 5, 1928. As indicated by the post number, it was the 551st formed in New York State since summer of 1919 when the Legion began its work in every U.S. town or county, joining together to support veterans of the Great War and later changing its charter for veterans of all wars. » American Legion Cont. on pg. 6
Renovation work progresses at Northwood School Footers for frame set, interior opened By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER
LAKE PLACID | Work inside the shuttered storefront at 2495 Main Street here is progressing. Structural work will transform the historic building, erected in 1916 by Forrest H. Guild, into flexible workspace for Northwood School and community arts and science programs. “With safety, protection and the minimization of Main St. disruption as top priorities, the team from Bette & Cring started by properly securing the site to protect the public and maintain the greater street traffic on weekends, while also encourag-
ing pedestrians to continue to visit surrounding businesses,” school officials said in a news release this week. Inside the property, construction crews have opened the floors and walls, and secured footers for new steel structures. “The engineering plans require the construction team to build an additional nine footers (for concrete). The team has also been leveling the concrete floor in the shop area.” Focus is on strengthening the 104-yearold building, school officials said. And that process entailed removing piled rubble from the foundation and digging trenches for the footers and steel rebar concrete forms. » Northwood Cont. on pg. 2
NEW RUSSIA | Ansel Holcomb was the only son of one of the first pioneer families to settle here. He signed up to fight with the New York State Militia in a regiment lead by Capt. John Calkins, of Elizabethtown, during the War of 1812. He fought for one week, but in a seminal battle that helped turn the tides of war. On Sept. 11, 1814, he was wounded at the Battle of Plattsburgh where he stood with militiamen who kept British troops from crossing the Saranac River. Military records show Holcomb earned $1.86 for his service and indicates he was wounded Sept. 11 and died Sept. 13. By then the battle was won and the British had retreated north. Ansel was 21 or 22 when he died of war wounds, according to historical accounts. Historian Margaret Bartley, who lives in New Russia, began looking into Holcomb’s military service when a distant ancestor asked where he was buried. » Holcomb Cont. on pg. 3

PORT HENRY | Hikers will descend on Port Henry June 1 for the Moriah Challenge, in which they have one day to complete four trails. Moriah Chamber of Commerce events coordinator Catherine Sprague said the challenge, now in its fifth year, attracts between 50 and 100 hikers, and is growing. It features the four Champlain Area Trails (CATS) routes located in Moriah, including Belfry Mountain, Coot Hill, Cheney Mountain and Crowfoot Trail. The trails feature varying degrees of difficulty, Cheney Mountain being the hardest and Belfry being the easiest. “Belfry is just a hop, skip and a jump, but people love it,” Sprague said. All are suitable for families, and there is no charge to participate. Sprague said the challenge attracts people from Canada to Albany, along with Vermont and Lake Placid. Hikers who complete the challenge get a commemorative embroidered

patch from the chamber. Patches can be claimed by coming to the chamber offices at 4317 Main Street in Port Henry. Free CATS trail maps are also available at the chamber.
THE TRAILS INCLUDE:
— Belfry Mountain: The trail is only a third of a mile (one way) with little elevation gain, but it arrives at a fire tower that provides views of the Champlain Valley to the east and the High Peaks to the west. — Coot Hill: Also known as the Big Hollow Trail, it’s accessed by an unmaintained road that ends at a cemetery with graves of Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers. The climb is modest, but the reward is a long, southern view of Lake Champlain and the Vermont mountains. — Cheney Mountain: This milelong trail is steeper than the others, but the views are multiple and include a northern lookout, and southern view of the Lake Champlain Bridge and a western view of the old Switchback iron mine with its rusting buildings and massive tailings pile. — Crowfoot Pond: At three miles, this is the longest trail, but it is mostly fl at through forests and ending at Crowfoot Pond. ■

“I went to our list online, and there was no gravestone,” Bartley said. The records do indicate Ansel Holcomb was laid to rest in the Boquet Cemetery, established in 1798 by early settlers at New Russia, in what that year became Elizabethtown. Bartley continued to search news articles and military dockets related to Holcomb’s service. “His family is here,” she said, walking past rows of gravestones at the old cemetery, which was placed high on an open knoll above what had long been the site of milling operations — sawmills and gristmills — powered by the Boquet River. Lines of ancient gravestones count generations of Holcombs who lived, worked and fought here. Benjamin Holcomb, Ansel’s father, was laid to rest under a sculpted marble stone now worn bare, likely by wind and weather. Photos of the stone taken years ago show it marks his death on Sept. 15 in 1807, seven years plus two days before his son. The local history tome, “Pleasant Valley”, by George L. Brown, records the arrival of Benjamin Holcomb, Esq. to this region and that “... a son, Ansel by name, was mortally wounded Sept. 11, 1814 at the Battle of Plattsburgh, being shot in the side and dying Sept. 13, two days after the English turned back toward Canada. Ansel Holcomb’s body was also buried in the Boquet Valley Cemetery.” In September 1903, Dr. Midas Elijah “M.E.” Bishop also wrote down what he learned as a child. For years, Bishop’s letters described the days of early settlement here. They were published word-for-word in the Elizabethtown Post and Gazette newspaper. He recalled that his uncle Jonathan Post, son of Dr. Asa Post, was also in Calkins’ company during that famous battle. “His talk about the battle of Plattsburgh was very in-

And Bartley brought the concern to the county’s Veteran’s Affairs office. “We believe we have what we need to request a headstone from the Veteran’s Affairs Office Memorial Program,” veterans’ office coordinator Sara Smith said. Tim Pierce, manager of the county’s veterans office, told the Sun that the government will issue headstones for unmarked graves, but it’s not guaranteed. “They require quite a bit of detail for wars prior to the

As Uncle Jonathan expressed it ‘a good many poor fellows were seen to tumble off the bridge, and one here and there who were wading fell and floated down stream.’” There is no recorded headstone in the Boquet Cemetery for Ansel Holcomb.

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
Memorial Day in America
Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May honoring the men and women who By Dan Alexander died while serving in • PUBLISHER • the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades while others view it only as the beginning of summer. While a return to nice weather is always a welcomed sight, we must never forget, nor fail, to appreciate the sacrifices made by brave friends, family and perfect strangers when they put their lives on the line to defend the lives and freedoms we enjoy today. Putting themselves in harm’s way requires great valor and bravery. My grandfather served in World War I, my father in World War II and my brother-in-law during the Vietnam conflict. Three men, I respect immensely not just for their sacrifices but for the way they conducted their lives after serving the nation. For them, Memorial Day was always a special day to remember their fallen and injured comrades. I recall too, the pride they showed in their service. Grandfather was always the polished soldier who could fit in his uniform till the day he passed and proudly wore it annually in hometown Pittsburgh parades. We see those same traits in so many who’ve served our nation in a similar way. Their dedication to country, fellow humans and placing the needs of others before themselves is seared into who they were then and who they are today. Facing the enemy and realizing the heavy responsibility they carried on their shoulders provides them a perspective to value the liberty and freedoms we in so many ways take for granted in our busy lives. Without a doubt, the military profession should be the highest honored profession we have in the country. I hope we will all join together throughout the region on this Memorial Day to honor those who sacrificed everything for us, but I also ask that you give thought to those who have returned wounded or those who may not be getting the care they need financially or emotionally. Lastly, I encourage you to also give thought to the hardship placed on families who have watched their loved ones leave home to serve the nation. The pain of separation and the fear of losing that loved one must also not be forgotten. ■

Cancer Services Program will pay for screenings
To the Editor: It’s been a long winter. Happily, the roads are now cleared of ice and snow, and the temperatures are warming. The flowers are even thinking of blooming. Getting around in this nice weather is much easier, so May is a great month to get your breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings checked off your to-do list. If you have health insurance, your screenings will most likely be covered in full. If you do not have health insurance, the Cancer Services Program is here to help you. We pay for a Pap test, clinical breast exam, mammogram and take home kit for colorectal cancer screening for eligible individuals. If needed, follow-up testing is also covered by our program. We have been a part of this community for more than 20 years. Please call the Cancer Services Program of Northeastern New York at 518-324-7671 today, make your screening appointments and be free and clear for the rest of the year. - Sarah Granquist, Cancer Services Program of Northeastern NY, Plattsburgh ■

To the Editor: It saddens me to see trash strewn along our highways. A couple of weeks ago, I was driving up the Northway from Queensbury when I saw a couch and chair in the meridian. As I drove toward Schroon Lake, a tanker threw a coffee cup out the window. Then there were miles and miles of orange bags as the workers spend their days picking up trash in an effort to keep our area beautiful. It’s a dangerous job, but do the litterbugs think of anyone other than themselves? These people may live like pigs at home and think it’s OK to litter our highways, but I wonder how they would feel if the cups, candy wrappers or even a couch and chair were thrown on their front lawn. When we first moved to Schroon Lake, my husband and I spent seven years walking through the park in Schroon Lake picking up trash. It started with a grocery bag and each year the bags got bigger and bigger until I had to use my pull cart with a large trash bag in it to clean up the area. The problem seemed to get worse, not better. We live in one of the most beautiful areas in the country but there are those who don’t appreciate it by littering. How much room does that coffee cup take on the floor of your car until you can find a trash can, folks? Is there a chance you can start to appreciate living on planet Earth by thinking before you roll that window down and toss your trash out? I would hope so! And those of you who are doing this with your kids in the car, you are teaching them that it’s OK and then it becomes a never-ending cycle. - Ellie Searles, Schroon Lake ■

Borrowed time No decision on Eagle Bay boat launch for at least two years By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER
RAY BROOK | A final decision on the Eagle Lake boat launch, which faced closure under a state management plan, will come in the next two to five years, an Adirondack Park Agency representative said last week. The agency gave final approval to the full Hammond Pond Unit Management Plan, which governs 45,500 acred of the state Forest Preserve that stretched from Ticonderoga to Keene, but hedged on the boat launch, which became the most controversial part of the plan. “In a nutshell, this is a complex issue,” said environmental planner Walter Linck. He said the state will monitor boat traffic on the lake over the next two years as part of its ongoing study of carrying capacity on Adirondack Lakes. The land in question is

classified as wild forest, which does not permit boat launches of lakes of fewer than 1,000 acres. Eagle Lake is less than half that size. Residents protested the proposed changes that physically limited the launch to small boats, saying may local residents were elderly and would not be able to negotiate the barrier. They also said first responders depended on the launch to reach camps of the far side of the lake. When the property went into the Forest Preserve more than 30 years ago, the launch theoretically should have been removed, but somehow it slipped through the cracks. As the state updates its management plan, Linck said the launch can only remain if the APA changes its classification to Intensive Use. Linck said Eagle Lake is comprised of two different bodies of water connected by a low culvert under Route 74. The part of Eagle Lake where the launch is located is shallow, marshy and wooded. “What we see here is very much a character that should be protected,” Linck said. But on the other side of the causeway, Eagle Lake is ringed with camps and 97 percent privately owned, which he said is “inarguably of a different character.” There are other considerations too. There are private launches on the

As such, Linck said, it might be better to have one public launch with a boat-washing station to guard against the spread of invasive species. On the opposite side of the lake, Linck said
there is a nonconforming campground on Crown Point Bay where some land has been cleared and includes a trail that has been used by ATVs. The state plans to keep a lean-to and primitive campsites, but restrict other uses. ■

ELIZABETHTOWN | The final in the Piano By Nature performance series is all about FUN! And the show promises some unique genre blends of piano and electric guitar. The concerts on June 1 and 2 bring Keene Valley resident Gene V. Baker together with musical partner Will NorlichRedmond for what promoters dub “Eclectic Electroacoustic.” Rose Chancler, founder of Piano by Nature, defines ‘FUN’ as a “tongue-twisting, tail-wagging, chops-blistering, earbusting dance of psychic freeways and toe-tapping doomsdays. Think: fast-paced speed jazz carnival ambient sing-along with improvisations spanning funk, metal, country and more. “And bring the kids- the whole family will most-certainly love this one,” she said. Northlich-Redmond, an electric guitarist, and Baker, an organ and piano player, first met at the Hartt School in Hatford, Connecticut, over 20 years ago Chancler said via email. FUN! was founded in New York City in 1999. “Both Gene and Will share an affinity for a wide variety of music, such as contemporary classical, jazz and free-jazz, R&B, funk, music from different ethnic backgrounds, and basically just about anything out-of-the-ordinary,” Chancler said. FUN! will perform twice at the Hand House: Saturday, June 1 at 7 p.m. and then again on Sunday, June 2 at 3 p.m. “We ask for a donation of $15 for adults and $5 for youth ages 15 and under. Ticketers are available at the door on the days of the concerts, but reservations are recommended. NEW PARK MEMORIAL
The Boquet Valley Post is continuing its work to acknowleged the service of veterans from Elizabethtown. A committee led by legionnaires George Saug and Jim Beaton now have plans to improve the small veterans’ park area in the center of town, across from the high school. “We are planning to enhance the park with a marker for all veterans from Elizabethtown. It will be a memorial dedicated to all of our veterans from all five branches of the service. We are also trying to get a military armament piece to enhance the site,” Saug
The original charter of American Legion Boquet Valley Post No.551 preserves the name of founding members of the organization here on May 5, 1928. The Boquet Valley American Legion Auxilliary was formed at about the same time.

SUNY Chancellor Awards four for excellence Recipients to be honored later this year
PLATTSBURGH | Four faculty and staff members at SUNY Plattsburgh have been honored by the SUNY Board of Trustees and Chancellor Kristina Johnson with the 2019 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. Recipients will receive a certificate and Chancellor’s Excellence Medallion. They will be honored later this year. Recipients for the 2019 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence are: • Dr. Adrian Carr, adjunct, department of music: Excellence in Adjunct Teaching • Ethel Facteau, library clerk three: Excellence in Classified Service • Dr. Eric Leibensperger, associate professor of environmental science: Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities • Dr. Sandra Rezac, associate professor of sociology: Excellence in Faculty Service
DR. ADRIAN CARR
The Grammy-nominated Carr began his undergraduate studies of music at SUNY Buffalo. He holds a bachelor of music from Julliard, his M.F.A. and doctorate from Princeton. He is a member of the American Society of Composers and Poets, National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and the Audio Engineering Society. Prior to returning to Princeton for his doctorate in 2011, Carr already had more than 25 years in the profession, establishing his
own recording studio in Manhattan as well as working with major record labels and indie clients in his mastering facility in Montreal. In addition to teaching applied lessons in music composition, Carr has taught introduction to music technology, music theory one and three, and world music among others. His contributions extend beyond the classroom, hosting recitals and concerts on campus and in the community. He also assisted in the design of the new music arts management program in the department. “I taught five courses this semester as an adjunct between the communications and music departments; that’s two more than a full professor, so you can imagine that it was a challenging semester,” Carr said. “So it was very gratifying to get recognition for the many things I’ve done for the college since I came here in 2016.
ETHEL FACTEAU
Facteau joined the staff at SUNY Plattsburgh as a clerk one/dispatcher at University Police in 1993. In the fall of 1996, she took a provisional appointment/promotion to library clerk two in Feinberg Library. She was granted permanent status in 1997. In April 2009, she was promoted to library clerk three in interlibrary loan, Feinberg Library. Over the course of her career, Facteau has supervised hundreds of students, crosstraining them in both the borrowing and lending side of the department and has worked with hundreds of faculty and staff members to assist with their needs. She has served on the campus RADIUS Development Committee and Affirmative
Action Committee through the Title IX Office, and serves as the president of the Plattsburgh chapter of the Civil Service Employees Association. “When I was approached by Dean Holly Heller-Ross, who told me she was nominating me for this award, I was both humbled and honored,” Facteau said. “When informed that I had received the award, I was elated. This award is especially important for classified staff, as we all play an important role, vital to the mission/operation of the campus.”
DR. ERIC LEIBENSPERGER
Leibensperger joined the faculty in the Center for Environmental Science as an assistant professor in 2012. An atmospheric scientist specializing in atmospheric chemistry (air climate) and climate change, he earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and physics from Ithaca College, his master’s and doctorate in applied physics from Harvard University. He has completed postdoctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science in 2012. He was promoted to associate professor in 2017. His studies focus on the interactions of air pollution and climate change as well as the dynamics of the atmosphere. He expanded his research at SUNY Plattsburgh to include studies of the climate of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks. Since arriving at Plattsburgh, he has pursued more than $1 million in 18 external funding grants. All of his funded projects and proposals were designed to include undergraduate researchers and to engage the community.
CYC receives Stewart’s Holiday Match donation Funds to go to after-school tutoring program
LAKE PLACID | Lake Placid/Wilmington Connecting Youth and Communities, Inc. (CYC) is the recipient of the Stewart’s Holiday Match donation of $300. CYC will use the donation to help fund the after-school tutoring program at the Lake Placid Middle/High School library. The Stewart’s Holiday Match Program has now allocated over $28 million since the program’s inception 1986. Officials from Stewart’s credit the success of this
program to their customers for their generous contributions, their dedicated shop partners who worked diligently to collect the funds and to their media partners who helped spread the word throughout their many regions. All Stewart’s Holiday Match funds are used directly for children under 18 years of age in the geographic areas where their shops are located and the money was raised. “We are delighted to receive the Stewart’s Holiday Match this year,” said CYC President Jason Leon. “The money will directly impact programs that we have for local students. The after school tutoring program will be able to continue through Stewart’s generosity.”
The after school tutoring program is available to all students in the middle/ high school. It takes place Monday through Thursday at the Lake Placid Middle/High School Media Center from 2:45-5:30 p.m. Each day between nine and 35 students take advantage of this opportunity. An organizer at CYC said they believe this program assists in closing the opportunity gap that exists in the school. The Lake Placid/Wilmington CYC Coalition, Inc., is a youth development organization. Its mission is to promote mental, physical and spiritual health by empowering and educating our youth to become leaders and engaged citizens. ■
“I am proud of my contributions to SUNY Plattsburgh and the greater community through my scholarship,” Leibensperger said. “I am proud that my research has had enough impact on the scientific community and student learning to be recognized. I am also very thankful.”
DR. SANDRA REZAC
Rezac first arrived at SUNY Plattsburgh as a visiting assistant professor in 2002, joining the faculty of sociology as an assistant professor in 2004. She was promoted to associate professor and became chair of the department of sociology and criminal justice in the fall of 2008. When criminal justice became its own department, she remained chair of sociology from January 2012 to September 2015. She began her third three-year term as chair in September 2018, and as such continues to carry a full-time teaching load. In addition to departmental service, Rezac has served on numerous college committees, the Faculty Senate, the National Council on Family Relations, the Board of Directors of the ADK Humane Society and more. She earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “There are many faculty at SUNY Plattsburgh who engage in extraordinary service, so I feel very honored to have been selected to receive this award,” Rezac said. “I’m particularly committed to shared governance and have served on our local and SUNYwide faculty senates for many years. It’s important to me to embrace the unique opportunity that faculty have to help shape the academic direction of the college. ■

Sweet senior cat available
TOOTSIE, an older cat, is this week’s featured pet. She is low maintenance, very sweet and would be content with the companionship of a gentle dog or kitty. This senior girl really needs a person to call her own. She still has plenty of sass, will make you laugh and keep your lap warm. Tootsie came to the shelter six months ago. She was a bag of bones and flea infested. It took a few months for our staffs’ attentive and loving care to give Tootsie a new lease on life. She does need thyroid medication once a day, but it is inexpensive. Tootsie is waiting for the loving retirement home she so deserves. If you want quiet, loving companionship, Tootsie would be perfect. And so grateful to you for welcoming an older cat into your home. ■

Rev. Monsignor Peter R. Riani
LAKE PLACID | Reverend Monsignor Peter R. Riani, age 89, passed into new life on the night of Thursday, May 16, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Home in Ogdensburg. On Monday, May 20, at 5:30 p.m., Reverend John Yonkovig, vicar forane of the Adirondack Deanery, will preside over the reception of the body at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. Calling hours will continue until 9 p.m. and resume on Tuesday, May 21 from 9 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley, bishop of the Diocese of Ogdensburg, will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial, with the priests of the diocese concelebrating. Reverend Monsignor Leeward J. Poissant will offer the homily. This day is Msgr. Riani’s 64th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. He will be laid to rest in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Keeseville in the alb prepared by his grandmother for his ordination. Peter Riani was born on Aug. 16, 1929, the son of Peter J. and Mary (Robarge) Riani in Keeseville. He attended Union College in Schenectady in 1946 and 1947 before beginning seminary studies at Wadhams Hall in Ogdensburg. After graduating in 1951, he attended St. Mary’s Seminary and Univer-

sity in Baltimore until graduating in 1955. Most Reverend Walter P. Kellenberg, D.D., ordained Father Riani on May 21, 1955 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg. Fr. Riani spent five years served as assistant pastor at St. Rita’s Church in Deferiet, St. Paul’s Church in Black River and St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake. Beginning in 1958, he began spending his summers attending the University of Ottawa where he received a master’s of psychology and education in 1963. During that time, he spent a year at Pontifical Anthenaeum Angelicum, earning a doctorate in theology (S.T.D.) in 1960. He returned to Wadhams Hall as an instructor involved in the education and formation of young men considering their calling to the priesthood. This began a career spanning five decades, culminating as president-rector of the seminary for 12 years and lecturing at other institutions such as Mater Dei College and St. Lawrence University. In 1976, he was appointed prelate of honor of his holiness and humbly avoided use to the title monsignor. He preferred to be called Fr. Peter or Fr. Riani. During a hiatus, Fr. Riani was pastor of St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid from 1982 until 1985. While completing his Wadhams career, he served as pastor of St. Raphael’s Church in Heuvelton between 1988 and 1993. He returned nearer to his hometown to serve as pastor at St. Augustine’s Church

in Peru from 1993 until 1999 and then St. Elizabeth Church in Elizabethtown and St. Philip Neri Church in Westport between 2000 and his retirement in 2012. During this time, he was dean of the Essex Deanery. He held numerous diocesan posts such as associate editor of the North Country Catholic and director of seminarians and served on many committees. Many will remember Fr. Riani for his many world travels, love of sailing and his annual summer rental of Rock View Camp on Lake Champlain. These memories were always made with family and friends, like Reverend Richard Sturtz and many others. When Fr. Riani stopped moving, a book was always in his hand or a discussion on his lips, often involving the philosophy of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin S.J. He spent 75 years schussing down mountains on his skis, and only Parkinson’s disease robbed him of that joy. Rev. Msgr. Peter Riani is survived by his sister-in-law, Joan Riani and brother-in-law William Turner and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Richard G. Riani; sisters, Nancy McClellan and Susan Turner; brother-in-law, David McClellan; and nephew, Christopher J. Riani. Fr. Riani requested no flowers be sent. Arrangements are in the care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, Saranac Lake, 518-891-3613. ■

Author feted for book set in upstate NY ‘War Calls, Love Cries’ earns international, national recognition By Laura Achouatte STA FF W RITER
NORTH COUNTRY | Former businessman turned author Mark Barie has been designated as a 2019 Hoffer Award Finalist. Barie — a native of Champlain and currently of Sebring, Florida — has written several historical biographies, but “War Calls, Love Cries” is his first work of fiction. “I never read fiction; I’m more of a historical guy,” Barie said by phone from his Florida residence. “I didn’t believe my book would be received as it was.” The Hoffer Book Award — one of the largest international awards — pays homage to American philosopher Eric Hoffer. It is bestowed to authors of noteworthy skill in several different genres. Of approximately 2,000 nominees, submissions from all over the English-speaking world, a handful are named finalists and grand finalist for each genre. In addition to the Hoffer Award, Barie will be attending the Florida Authors and Publishers Association’s President’s
“My wife walked in the room and told me, ‘Did you know your great-greatgrandfather was in the Civil War?’ and I thought about him historically and what he would have gone through. He was in the Adirondack Regiment and so I based him historically accurate and gave him a wife and a life on paper.”
Barie’s book is available at amazon.com plus barnesandnoble.com. Signed copies with free shipping are available by contacting the author directly at authormarkbarie@gmail.com. More information can be found about the Hoffer Award and Eric Hoffer at info@hofferaward.com. ■
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Book Award 2019 in August, in which “War Calls, Love Cries” is a contender for a medal. Barie is humble about the possibilities. “I’ll get a medal or two on the cover of my book! It really is such big deal and honor for me. You know, I never thought I was that great of a writer.” Why write fiction?
Barie founded and operated numerous companies related to commercial real estate, consulting and marketing within upstate New York. The St. Michael’s College, Vermont, alumnus has recently retired after decades in the business sector, and now works as an author — “historical in nature” — and public speaker. Barie’s “War Calls, Love Cries” is about an “innocent farm boy from upstate New York whose dreams are ruined by his hometown sweetheart’s secret past” and “a treacherous brother,” according to the book jacket, amidst the looming violence and destruction of the American Civil War. ■

Track sectionals set for Thursday By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR
PLATTSBURGH | The Section VII track and field championships will be determined Thursday, May 23, being held at Plattsburgh High with a 2 p.m. start. Saranac and Saranac Lake had strong performances in their final tuneups before the sectional championships, as the Red Storm beat the Chiefs earlier in the season, ending their league win streak.
PEEKING AT THE RIGHT TIME
For several Section VII track athletes, personal bests were set this weekend, a meet prior to the sectionals and a good time to be performing at their best. Cameron Duffield of Saranac comes into the sectional meet on a hot streak, as the NCAA D-I bound senior currently holds the top time in NYSPHSAA Division II in the 400 hurdles (54.53 - fourth fastest in all divisions), the second fastest time in the 110 hurdles (14.43) in D-II, along with teaming with Brexton Montville, Luke Maye and Garrett Adolfo for the second fastest time in D-II in the 1,600 relay (3:25.6). Duffield and his teammates accomplished these marks at the Eddy Meet in Schenectady Saturday, where he was also
named the Most Outstanding Male Athlete. The times were also personal bests, while he set the school record in the 110 hurdles and the school and sectional record in the 400 hurdles. Also at the Eddy Meet, Montville placed sixth in the 100, while Maddie Hoeth placed sixth in the girls discus with a mark of 116-1. Mackenzie Converse also won her heat in the 800 with a time of 2:26.17. AuSable Valley’s Lily Potthast set a pair of personal best times in the 800 (2:27.15, 20th overall) and 5:04.52 in the 1,500 (20th overall). Potthast shaved six seconds off her time in the 800 and three seconds in the 1,500. Seton Catholic also competed at the Eddy Meet, with Jake Glicksman setting a personal mark of 4:31.31 in the mile, while Aidan Masten had a PR of 17-8.5 in the long jump.

STATE QUALIFIERS TO FOLLOW
Baseball rankings still in air as sectionals approach
By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR
PLATTSBURGH | By the end of the week, the sectional baseball playoff picture will be a lot clearer. That’s because weather and tight competition has left a crowded field in both Class B and Class D, without a clear-cut top seed in either as of press time. The only clear top seed is in Class C, where Ticonderoga finished the season at 12-2, winning the CVAC overall and Division II titles. The Class C playoffs start with quarterfinal games May 23, followed by the semifinal round May 28 and the sectional title game June 3 at Chip Cummings Field in Plattsburgh.
TRI CHAMPS
In Class D, the picture is blurred due to the competitiveness of the top three teams — Bolton/ Schroon Lake, Chazy and Crown Point - as each split their season series with the other two schools. The Eagles and Panthers rallied for the three-way tie atop the MVAC standings, as Chazy got a masterful performance from Ben Norcross in a one-hit, 1-0 win before defeating the Panthers the following day. “It was a very big week for us,” said coach Brian Norcross. “Winning three games in four days is a challenge, especially getting two big wins on backto-back days against two really good teams. We are
playing pretty well right now and hope we can continue the good play moving forward into the post season.” Crown Point, meanwhile, scored a walkoff, 2-1 win May 20 over Bolton/Schroon, securing the three-way tie atop the standings. “These guys have to play their best baseball and what they are capable of,” Crown Point coach Randy Pertak said. “We played a great game tonight against a good team, that is what we need to do in the playoffs.” The Class D playoffs start with the quarterfinal round, if necessary, May 23, with semifinals May 28 and the Class D title game June 1 at Chip Cummings Field.
D-I STILL TO BE DECIDED
After having been postponed twice, the Peru Indians will travel to Northeastern Clinton Wednesday, May 22, in a game that will decide the CVAC regular season title and most likely the top seed in Class B. Beekmantown, Saranac and Plattsburgh High have also spent the year playing competitive ball against each other, which could lead to a very competitive sectional playoffs. Class B playoffs begin with quarterfinal games May 23, followed by the semifinal round May 28 and the championship game May 31, also at Chip Cummings Field. All games in the Section VII playoffs are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m., with the exception of the Class D title game, which is scheduled for first pitch at 1 p.m. ■
Ben Munn extends for a play for Saranac Lake against Saranac May 18. The Red Storm will be part of the Class C baseball playoffs. More photos from this game can be found online at mycapture.suncommunitynews.com. Photo by Keith Lobdell
Peru leads way into sectional golf tourney
By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR
PERU | A week after the MVAC crown was wrapped up, the Peru varsity golf team finished a 10-0 season with a 5-1 win over Lake Placid, wrapping up the CVAC title and placing themselves as one of the top teams heading into the sectional golf tournament, to be held May 23-24 at Craig Wood Golf Course in Lake Placid, with 9 a.m. starts each day. Jacob Bechard led the Indians with a 43, while Keegan Smith added a 44, Erick Frechette 46, Austin Carpenter
48 and Matt Latinville 55. Brendan Bullock of Lake Placid scored a 47-55 win over Alex Lawliss. “I’m very proud of our team,” said coach John Clemons. “They are a great group of kids with a lot of competitiveness. They have worked hard and set this as a goal early in the season. They have already set their next goal and know it will be difficult at Craig Wood but all six have shot in the 40’s this year.” The Indians have two of the top 10 ranked golfers in Section VII in Carpenter (43.6) and Smith (45.1), while Bechard averages a score of 47.5 per nine holes.
Beekmantown’s Hugo Chavanchankij and Moriah’s Thomas Clarke have carded the lowest scoring averages for the season at around 41 strokes per nine, followed by Willsboro’s Regan Arnold, Saranac’s Ian Zurlow and Nil Hamel, Crown Point’s Jake LaDeau, Carpenter, Northeastern Clinton’s Ben Lloyd, Lake Placid’s Hunter Wilmot and Smith. The team championship round takes place Thursday, with the top third of the field returning for the individual title Friday. There will also be a girls state qualifying round May 24, with Alivia Waldron of Saranac Lake having averaged 45.3 on her scorecard during the season, good for 11th overall. ■

Sectional tennis matches underway By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR
PLATTSBURGH | The Beekmantown girls and Peru boys varsity tennis teams will try to carry their regular season success over this week as the Section VII championships take place at AuSable Valley and in Plattsburgh. The tournament was postponed one day, with opening round matches starting Tuesday, May 21, semifinal rounds the following day at 3:30 p.m. and finals Thursday, May 23, at 3:30 p.m. Girls matches will be held at AuSable Valley Central School, while boys matches will be held at Plattsburgh High School and Plattsburgh State.
