Candidates seek superintendent spot at E-L-W school district

By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER

WILMINGTON | Fire that apparently started in a ground-floor apartment at 1158 Springfield Road claimed the life of Brittany Barney. Essex County Coroner Francis Whitelaw told The Sun he identified the victim Saturday morning. Barney was 37. State police said the fire was reported at approximately 9:13 a.m. June 1. From its origin on the first floor, flames spread quickly throughout the two-story wooden structure, which was left a scorched shell. » Fire Cont. on pg. 3

Each presented experience, vision statements at community forum By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER

ELIZABETHTOWN | Three candi-

dates were named finalists in the search for superintendent of the new Elizabethtown-Lewis-Westport Central School District. Each presented aspects of job experience, focus and vision at an open forum gathering last week. Brent Suddaby is currently principal at Stonehedge Elementary School at West Genesee Central School in Camillus, a position he has held since 2012. Josh Meyer is currently interim su-

perintendent and principal at Westport Central School (WCS), a position he worked to blend this year, having served as principal at WCS since 2015. Scott Osborne is currently superintendent at Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School (ELCS), a position he has held since 2012. They delivered remarks in 20-minute increments with time at the end allowed for questions from community. About 70 people attended the forum. » Superintendent Cont. on pg. 5

Eagle Mountain preserved Northeast Wilderness Trust buys 2,400-acre retreat By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

CHESTERFIELD | The North Branch of the Boquet River begins alongside a dirt Adirondack road adjacent to a former family retreat dotted with ponds and crossed by streams, where peregrine falcons nest, dragonflies swarm and beds of sage-colored lichen and pink lady slippers float amid banks of emerald moss. Aesthetics aside, the 2,434-acre tract represents a significant link in a swath of mostly protected forestland between Lake Champlain and the High Peaks where wildlife can trace its historic migratory paths uninterrupted by development. “This land has been so gently used over the years that walking around it gives you the impression of being a guest” in the wilderness, said Shelby Perry, stewardship director for the Northeast Wilderness Trust, which purchased the land for preservation as a privately held wilderness in late May. » Eagle mtn. Legion veterans to re-dedicate Memorial Highway By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER

WILMINGTON | Essex County American Legion posts will officially re-dedicate the Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway on Sunday. The ceremony at 2 p.m. takes place near the summit beside the Castle at the top of the highway. “It is open to the public and admission is free to those attending the ceremony,” said Newman Tryon, adjutant for the Essex County legion. “In case of bad weather at the top, the ceremony will take place near the entrance gate at the base of the mountain.” One of the region’s most popular tourist attractions, the highway was built to honor

veterans, initially, of the Great War and provides roadway access to a series of overlooks from New York’s fifth tallest peak. “This is a tribute from the citizens of the state of New York which would be appreciated by those fallen comrades of ours who served their state and their nation so well. It is fitting that we should dedicate it in their names. It will stand as a tribute to them through all the centuries to come,” President Franklin D. Roosevelt said in his address in September 1935. An elevator at the parking area can also lift people, with wheelchairs or not, to the summit peak. The 4,867foot perch has a view encompassing the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain. The glass-walled elevator has officially reopened with renovations and repairs completed. The 400-foot tunnel walkway to the elevator has a new copper ceiling and modern lighting features. The tunnel and elevator system help bring veterans and all people living with disabilities to the mountain top. ■

Views span in all directions from the top of Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway, which was built to honor military veterans. On Sunday, the highway will be re-dedicated in ceremony by the Essex County American Legion. Photos by Kim Dedam

» Eagle mtn. Cont. from pg. 1 What will be known as the Eagle Mountain Wilderness Preserve is situated between the Taylor Pond Wild Forest, home to the popular Poke-o-Moonshine Mountain to the north, and the Jay Mountain Wilderness to the south. It was purchased from the Rodgers family for $1.1 million. The organization is continuing to raise funds for the project to pay for taxes and management. Accessed off Trout Pond Road, hikers in the coming weeks will be able to follow a roughly three-mile access road leading over several chattering streams to Clear Pond, where the family had their cabin. A kiosk and a small parking area will mark the trailhead, Perry said. Formal trails will be developed by Champlain Area Trails (CATS) and are expected to be in place by 2020. The land will be open to non-motorized recreation, including hiking, cross-country skiing, canoeing and fishing. Hunting will be allowed by permit.

‘A BIG STEP’

It’s hoped that the tract will become a northern version of the Split Rock Wildway, a protected corridor stretching from Lake Chaplain near Essex to the Hurricane Mountain Wilderness and High Peaks. The mostly level trail to Clear Pond is rich in wildlife and offers broad views of ponds and wetlands, with an occasional mountain top poking out from among the hardwoods and red and old-growth white pines. Jack pines are also on the property, somewhat of a rarity that far to the south. Zack Porter, the trust’s outreach and communications coordinator, said the property had been in the Rodgers family for nearly a century, and had been lightly touched save for some selected logging through the years. tional “West Champlain Hills” between the Champlain Valley and High Peaks, it represents an ecology that is perhaps the most biologically diverse in the park. “In contrast to the great wilderness areas of the High Peaks and Lakes Country of the Central and Western Adirondacks, the easternmost region of the Adirondack Park remains underrepresented when it comes to forever-wild landscapes,” said Jon Leibowitz, executive director of Northeast Wilderness Trust. “Eagle Mountain Wilderness Preserve is a big step toward ensuring that low-elevation areas receive equal wilderness representation within the beloved Adirondacks.” According to the trust, the acquisition of Eagle Mountain will also protect more than five miles of headwater streams that feed into the North Branch of the Boquet River and support native brook trout habitat. The high water quality also supports the Eastern Pearlshell, a rare freshwater mussel found in only a few locations in New York state and is at risk throughout its historical habitat due to water pollution and dams. The Northeast Wilderness Trust has preserved 35,000 acres, primarily in New England. The conservation easement for Eagle Mountain will be held by Adirondack Land Trust. “This project is both innovative and unique in the Adirondack Park,” Mike Carr, executive director of the Adirondack Land Trust, said in a statement. “First, this is not like other Adirondack wilderness; this is private forever-wild land that will now be opened to the public for uses that are compatible with its wilderness character. Also, the Adirondack Land Trust is just one of several partners using their different expertise to protect and manage this special place, leveraging the strengths of all involved.” ■

Visitors eligible for raffle

ELIZABETHTOWN | More than 20 local libraries will participate in the North Country’s first-ever “Library Crawl” June 15. Organizers said this event is designed for local families to rediscover libraries in the area. Participants will pick up their “Library Crawl Passport” at the first library they visit. At each stop, library staff will stamp the passport. Those who visit at least three participating libraries will have the opportunity to be entered into a drawing for prizes from local businesses. Many libraries will also offer special activities for children. Participants can turn in their completed passport at the last library they visit. All eligible passports will be entered into the prize drawing June 22.

“They weren’t able to get to her.” Barney’s companion suffered minor burns to his arms, Whitelaw said. “We have no reason to suspect foul play,” he said. State Police Troop B spokeswoman Trooper Jennifer V. Fleishman, based in Ray Brook, said an autopsy was scheduled Monday at Albany Medical Center. State police could not release further information about the fire as it remains under investigation. At Essex County Emergency Services, Director Don Jaquish said county fire investigators are working with state police and the State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, but no formal cause or point of origin had been determined as of Monday. Barney has a large extended family in Lake Placid and the surrounding region. She was employed at several popular local establishments, including Crowne Plaza and Bowlwinkles. She was also affiliated with ADK Pizza and Pasta on Springfield Road in Wilmington where owners held a special benefit Sunday and raised $2,875 in the first several hours with donations still coming in. The resources will go to her family. On Facebook, a Memorial/Loss Fundraiser for Brittany Barney continued steadily toward its initial $4,000 goal to assist family with funeral costs. The fundraiser is online: facebook.com/donate/448955362340625. ■

Firefighters from Wilmington Volunteer Fire Department responded, calling in mutual aid from nearby fire companies. “I went to the scene at 11 a.m. and stayed until I removed her at around 8:40 p.m.,” Whitelaw said. “A search warrant was required in case evidence of criminality was in place. We haven’t found anything that is suspicious,” the coroner said. Barney was asleep along with her male companion, Whitelaw said. The coroner did not share the boyfriend’s name; police have not released information about his condition. But the couple were heard calling for help as fire overtook the room, according to the coroner. Whitelaw said smoke conditions, heat and flames apparently prevented them from exiting the bedroom door. “We believe it started in that master bedroom where they were. They were both asleep. He awoke to intense heat and smoke. He could faintly see light through the window and went toward that. “People working next door heard them and stacked pallets to reach the window and then smashed it. They were able to pull him out.” The fire intensified at that point, Whitelaw said.

and their powers of observation, will learn how to help inform biodiversity by photographing plants and animals, including pollinators. They will also learn tips for planting beneficial pollinator gardens and participate in an activity illustrating the benefits of encouraging a less managed landscape. “The John Brown Farm is a 200+ acre haven for Adirondack flora and fauna,” said Martha Swan, executive director of John Brown Lives! “We are very excited to work with Larry and the ADK Pollinator Project to provide even more opportunities for visitors to explore and experience what the farm has to offer.” Refreshments will be offered in the lower barn before and after each program, but everyone is encouraged to bring water, bug spray and binoculars if possible. All programs are free and open to the public. The John Brown Farm is located at 115 John Brown Road. Opinion

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

And the survey says... We’ve witnessed some remarkable changes in the media landscape over the last decade. Quoting from an article By Dan Alexander appearing in the Wall Street • PUBLISHER • Journal last week, “All the companies have struggled over the past decade with steep advertising and print readership declines. This year, both GateHouse and Gannett have had substantial rounds of layoffs, while McClatchy offered buyouts to hundreds of employees.” With that as a backdrop, we’ve been a part of two recent surveys. The first was a local survey of North Country residents looking for feedback on where they find their local news. This survey was conducted by Circulation Verification Council (CVC) of St. Louis, Missouri. The second survey was conducted on a national basis with media buyers by CVC in cooperation with Standard Rate and Data Service (SRDS). Clearly times are changing, and while we don’t have space to cover all the questions, I would like to share a few details. When it comes to the local news source of choice, 88.9 percent of responders selected The Sun followed by WPTZ at 46.3 percent and tied for third was the PressRepublican and WCAX at 33.3 percent. All other forms of local media were in the 20 percent range and below. When asked specifically about newspaper choices alone, The Sun ranked at 70 percent, while the Post Star, Press-Republican and Daily Enterprise all came in below 10 percent. Those numbers are no surprise considering the circulation advantage The Sun now holds. In Clinton County, The Sun is mailed to 28,963 homes, while the PressRepublican has 6,681 subscribers based on their June 2017 AAM Audit. In Essex County, The Sun is mailed to 19,375 homes, while Press-Republican June 2017 audit shows 1,367 subscribers, and the Post Star has 199 subscribers in Essex County according to their June 2018 AAM Audit. The Daily Enterprise is not audited, but their total circulation is listed on SRDS as approximately 3,600. In northern Warren County, The Sun is mailed to 13,223 homes. In the same circulation area, the Post Star has 1,009 subscribers according to their June 2018 audit. In the result of the national media buyers survey, 91 percent of media buyers say they have experienced placing ads in free community newspapers. When asked about trustworthiness, free community newspapers ranked the highest with 67 percent in the very trustworthy and trustworthy category, followed closely by paid, daily papers at 60 percent. The belief that free, community newspapers provide excellent value for advertisers was at 69 percent, and 93 percent of media buyers believe free newspapers fill a unique niche in the media mix. All positive signs moving forward. ■

Letters

Plattsburgh parking plans must be clearly defined

Editor’s note: This letter refers to Sarah Morris’ article, “Preliminary plans OK’d for Durkee Street,” which ran in the June 1 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: The June 1 article on OK’d plans for Durkee Street needs attention. The statement for planned “additional parking along Durkee Street” is nebulous and can be misleading in light of the large number of unaccounted for parking spaces required due to the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) project and growth. For example, a prudent number of these spaces required may be the sum of the 289 lost spaces, additional spaces required due to the DRI buildup at that site, anticipated parking increases due to normal growth in the city and an additional number of spaces required/lost during snow emergency events. This should be a published and finite number competent council has established and could easily be about 580 (289 + 130 + 100 + X). I have reviewed the city council minutes and Plattsburgh Parking Advisory Committee (PPAC) minutes to date and nowhere is a required target number indicated. Perhaps it is an unachievable goal, hidden in unpopular paid parking schemes, proposing to move some operations to Dock Street, ranting about increased tax revenue, the value of a costly $26 plus million dollar buildup that the tenants will have to pay for over a basic parking lot, etc. The PPAC minutes clearly indicate public opposition to the project and concern for lack of available spaces. On April 25, the official statement “The City is planning alternate parking, and plans will be in place before the developers break ground” read into the minutes. Note there is no number of spaces indicated and “plans” are not good enough to competently move forward with. If

you reside in the downtown area or own or work at a store or restaurant and eat or shop or visit there you will be paying a big price for letting this move forward. - Geoff rey B. Barker, Plattsburgh ■

Abortion laws harmful to women

To the Editor: Women’s rights and healthcare are under siege in the U.S. Fortunately, in New York the passage of the Reproductive Health Act ensures that women in New York have access to a full range of reproductive healthcare services now and in the future. Passage of Roe v. Wade in 1973 upheld a woman’s right of privacy to make her own decisions about whether and when to become a parent, including the right to access safe, legal abortion services. These personal, difficult decisions made by a woman, with guidance from her health and support network, are made within the context of the woman’s faith, health, age and circumstance. Some of us remember horror stories prior to 1973 of women suffering the consequences of an illegal or self-inflicted abortion. Then, and in the future, if states are allowed to ban abortions, an unjust two-tier system of access to abortion services will be re-established. More affluent women will be able to travel to states that protect abortion rights, while low-income women seeking an abortion will have no alternative but to attempt one themselves or seek out an illegal provider. Two options posing grave risk to women. Demonizing and intimidating women who have made the very personal decision to have an abortion shows lack of respect and understanding. Six out of the nine states that passed abortion bans this year did not include an exemption for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. A man rapes a child or a woman and the victim will not have the choice to abort the fetus. Yet, in some of these states,

the punishment for a convicted rapist can be less than the punishment for a doctor convicted of providing the abortion. To me, these bans capsulize the misogyny running rampant in our country today. We are better than that. - Margot Gold, Saranac Lake ■

Independence Party members not Independent

To the Editor: Many voters desiring no political party affi liation unintentionally enroll in the Independence Party. Seven years ago, the New York Daily News interviewed 200 Independence Party members and found that 169 thought they were independents — not affiliated with any party. Essex County has 1,764 Independence Party members. Because of confusion over the party name, it’s possible that many of them intended to have no party affi liation. They checked what appeared to be an independent block on their registration form, but actually enrolled as an Independence Party member. The Independence Party’s platform — available here: ipny.org/platform.html — is primarily oriented toward fiscal austerity, privatization of government services and campaign reform. The party has been somewhat dormant recently but it has been active in the past, cross-endorsing other party’s candidates and attracting celebrity candidates. If you’re an unintentional Independence Party member, its very easy to change to Independent (no party affiliation) — or enroll in another party. SUDDABY

Suddaby shared his experience growing up in a large family in this area, and said he is ready to come home to the North Country. He and his wife, Judy, have three sons. Citing 10 years worked as a special education teacher in Westhill Central School, Suddaby said he has developed an ability to get people to work together, particularly with improving communication and interaction with parents. His experience, he said, has taught him that “doing things for the common good is good for everyone.” The new E-L-W district, he said, is akin to a marriage. “It is really important to make that marriage successful,” he said. As to a vision for the new district, Suddaby pointed to the importance of advanced literacy skills and mathematical practices in all classes. He said he would seek to establish curriculum and instruction improvement processes in every class. E-L-W will, he said, “emphasize the incorporation of advanced literacy skills and mathematical practices in all of our classes,” and “create a curriculum and instruction improvement process for every class.” Asked from audience submitted questions what decision he has made that was unpopular, and how he managed an outcome, Suddaby described the effort he undertook as a school principal to add reading to the kindergarten program. “The students were cared for and happy,” he said, “but ... they had very low skill levels.” To facilitate the change, Suddaby described how he ran a sequence of community forums and spoke with community members. “It took some convincing,” he said, but achievement results appeared in ensuing years. Asked what his school community might call a strength, Suddaby said, “I care very deeply and that care is followed up. I do the work.” Asked what they might say is one weakness, Suddaby said, “I talk too long.” Suddaby holds a master’s degree in special education from SUNY Oswego and a Bachelor of Science in physical education from SUNY Cortland. He completed the Superintendent Development Program at SUNY Oswego in 2017 and in Educational Leadership at SUNY Cortland. He is certified as a School District Leader, School Building Leader and in Physical Education and Special Education.

Every day we see wonderful people who come to the shelter to adopt, to volunteer, to drop off donations. Kettle, our featured pet this week, needs an extra special person to adopt her: a person with patience, a quiet household with no children but she does get along with other cats, and an understanding of the behavior of feral cats. We know it’s a lot to ask but Kettle is a special cat who has made tremendous progress in her social behavior. Kettle came to the shelter about a year ago as a feral cat. As you can see from her photo, she is a very handsome cat. She is about 2 ½ years old. We don’t know if she was originally a pet cat who was abandoned or lost, or whether she was born in the wild. Through her time at the shelter, and with the help of our staff and volunteers, Kettle has evolved from a terrified, hissing cat. She now looks forward to our giving her treats, talking to her and she loves to play with a string toy. Touching is still off limits. Her behavior

breaks our hearts because she so wants to be petted but she can’t quite commit. We know that with the right person, Kettle would learn to trust us humans even more. If you are that special person, please visit Kettle at the shelter. We will waive the adoption fee to give Kettle a second chance in a loving home. ■ - A weekly column that works to publicize the shelter’s adoptable pets. Find out more at ncspca.org.

in a classroom, including work as a science teacher at Chazy Central and at Hoosick Falls Central. A graduate of Plattsburgh High School, Meyer and his wife, Kelly, have three children. Meyer said he is a data-centered leader, and education decisions are best based on current data. And, he said, “I’m passionate about student outcomes,” indicating that “student outcomes” would improve with a better process in place to assess options. For Meyer, school district excellence is dependent on “open communication, collaboration, innovation, positive school culture and high expectations.” The new district, he said, offers a blank canvas, one that can blend traditions with new clubs, athletics, programming and community engagement. “We get to plan a district, that’s pretty awesome.” In his vision as superintendent, Meyer said he would look to expand opportunities for all students, establish academic excellence, maintain fiscal responsibility, promote district success and invest in programs that support the vision. Steps to achieve these goals, Meyer said, require information gathering, core values analyses and strategic planning. It might also expand an idea of student outcomes, Meyer said, by looking closely “at what we are preparing these students for.” Asked for an example of an unpopular decision he made in his job, Meyer pointed to the recent decision he made to cut the varsity boys basketball season short this year due to behavior concerns. “I appropriately responded to student behavior.” Asked what the school community might say are his strengths, Meyer said they would probably find his leadership “fair and consistent.” Asked what community might consider to be his weakness, Meyer said, “I could be more visible in some classrooms.” Meyer received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Elmira College and holds Advance Graduate Certificates in District Leadership, Building Leadership and in Curriculum and Instruction. He is certified as a School District Leader, a School Building Leader and for teaching grades seven to 12 biology and mathematics.

and presented two examples of change fostered under his direction in the past. One occurred at Peru Central School where, as principal, he obtained funding and introduced the Reading First curriculum, a fundamental change from prior years. The second occurred as ELCS faced deep recessionary budget cuts in 2008-09 and in 2012-14. Osborne said he was that student entering a merged district years ago when Seton Catholic formed from two prior school districts. As to his vision for the future, Osborne said two communities have been asked to pull together from systems they’ve utilized for a long time. “It’s a change for all of us.” Consolidation of school facilities, he said, is a must. “We have a generational opportunity to take a look at our school facilities.” Osborne said his goal is to provide a “well-rounded, rigorous education which supports students’ academic and social-emotional development while promoting efficiency, cost effectiveness and sustainability.” Asked what his school community might consider a strength, Osborne said he has always been enthusiastic in describing how great school programs are here. Asked what his weakness might be, Osborne said he is not always great at bottling up his exuberance. Asked to describe an unpopular decision he has had to make in his job, Osborne said two years ago he recommended ELCS abolish a teacher aide that supported the grade six transition process. And by working with parents, he said, they were able to fill in pockets of time with others who helped students make the shift toward middle school. Osborne received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from SUNY Plattsburgh, a Master of Science degree in educational literacy from SUNY Plattsburgh, and Certificate of Advanced Study in School Leadership from SUNY Plattsburgh. He is certified as a School District Administrator, as a Reading teacher and for pre-K, kindergarten and for grades one to six.

Osborne titled his vision statement: “Two legacies, one future.” A graduate of Seton Catholic, Osborne and his wife, Jody, have two children. Osborne said the 21 years of his public education experience span “phonics to physics and everything in-between.” The merged district, his said, requires “change leadership,”

E-L-W School Board President Phil Mero said the board would take input from forms filled out at the forum and feedback from stakeholder discussion groups held earlier to make “a very difficult” decision. “We have three highly qualified candidates here.” The goal is to have the superintendent in place by July 1, the official start date of the new E-L-W school district. ■

Gloria and Albert were active members of the Church of the Good Shepard in Elizabethtown. They enjoyed the outdoors — often snowshoeing, cross country skiing and hiking. Ticonderoga back McIntosh sisters lead in state playoffs Crown Point into states By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | Crown Point third baseman Sarah McIntosh started to tear up thinking about the moment. She and her sister, senior pitcher Shawna, had just delivered another Section VII/Class D title to the Panthers, as Shawna threw no-hit ball over seven innings, while Sarah drove in four of the Panthers’ six runs in a 6-0 title-clinching win against Elizabethtown-Lewis/Westport Monday. “It honestly makes me want to cry because it is her last year; I love her to death, and she did great out there,” Sarah McIntosh said. “It was wonderful, I love it out there. It was my first time being here and first time getting a jacket. I am so happy.” Older sister Shawna joked when asked about her younger sibling’s performance. “She learned it all from me,” Shawna said, then adding, “I am so proud of her, she did so good. This was my senior year and we really wanted another Class D championship and we really worked hard to get back to this point and finish with an undefeated Section VII record.” Shawna McIntosh also had a strong day at the plate, scoring twice on a single and RBI double, while Sarah was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a key hit in the bottom of the fourth to give Crown Point a 3-0 lead before striking again in the fifth, driving in two more and upping the score to 6-0. “It was a great team effort,” head coach Mike Ross said. “Sydney Gould played a great game and Cassie Ashe made a great catch in the outfield.” Gould’s catch came in the top of the fifth, when the Griffins had runners on first and third with one out. Abby Monty hit a ball hard into center field, but Ashe was able to make a shoestring catch to keep the Griffins off the board. “They were really good,” Ross said about the Griffins. “We may have come in here
