‘Boquet Valley Central School’ chosen Meyer selected as superintendent for Griffin students By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER

ELIZABETHTOWN | The School Board of merged Westport and Elizabethtown-Lewis Central schools voted unanimously to call its new district Boquet Valley Central School. The early public comment session was enlivened by a rhythmic plea in prose presented by student Lawrence Lobdell, of Westport, who will graduate from the merged district next year. “Boquet Valley is the one and only,” he said, suggesting Eastern Adirondack, the second option on the table, was a less distinct, amorphous name. “The Boquet River is a perfect example of what this merge could be,” Lobdell said, pointing out that it is the waterway that connects the three towns, Elizabethtown, Lewis and Westport. “BVCS is the dopest acronym, EAC — it’s just so bland,” he opined. Lobdell had many in the large audience of about 70 residents laughing as he made his point, so much so that several school board members admitted his presentation was convincing. In a School Identity Transition Advisory Team straw poll vote among students and adults in all three communities, BVCS earned 78 percent favor overall.

Westport Hose Co. #1 presents design of new fire station $3 million project would provide eight bays, decontamination area, office, training, storage, meeting space for both fire and EMS By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER

WESTPORT | Westport Hose Co. #1 presented schematic drawings, site plans and cost estimates for their prospective new fire station last week.

The fire company purchased 5.5-acres off Route 22 about a mile north of the Hamlet, across Commercial Lane from Bessboro Builders and Supplies. Jim Rule, chairman of the Westport Board of Fire Commissioners said the community has known for decades that the allvolunteer fire department needs a new fire station. Space is confined at the current location, so much so that the new fire truck purchased last year had to be specially designed to fit the garage. Doors for two rigs side-by-side cannot open at the same time. The “kitchen sink” area is stuffed behind a stairway under a sloped ceiling with loosened tiles. The meeting space doesn’t hold everyone at the same time, meaning firefighters use the stairway like bleachers. Rule shared important updates the new station would bring to the fire company and its ability to respond quickly. » Fire station Cont. on pg. 2

Stec gives positive outlook on Essex County EMS bill

New positions look likely to be added to emergency services By Laura Achouatte STA FF W RITER

Stec meets with the BOS: Assemblyman Dan Stec addresses the Essex County Board of Supervisors Monday, June 10, at a specially-called meeting addressing the passage of the EMS bill for Essex County. Photo by Laura Achouatte

ELIZABETHTOWN | The Essex County Board of Supervisors held a special meeting in addition to their regular meeting June 10. Assemblyman Dan Stec (R-114th District) made the trek North to the Essex County building in Elizabethtown to impart some good news and carry back to Albany the resolution of the companion bill he sponsored to the Assembly Local Governments Committee, a revision of the bill the Board of Supervisors sent to Albany. Some wording needed to be

revamped to accommodate what the county has in mind for the EMS plan, which shies away from usage of such words as “district” and their legal implications. The new document revised was set to be resolved by the board and further mirrored by the Senate and most likely approved by the governor this week. Daniel E. MacEntee, director of communications for Sen. Betty Little’s office, said, “Senator Betty Little sponsors the bill (S1997). The legislation was introduced at the request of the Essex County Board of Supervisors.” “Communities in Essex County are seeing increasing difficulty meeting the emergency health care needs of their residents,” said Little. “Response times lag far behind the state average but it certainly isn’t for lack of trying. The volunteers and paid staff we have are incredible, but there are too few of them. » Stec Cont. on pg. 8

Journey to mental wellness

ELIZABETHTOWN | Honeysuckle, vanilla and possibly amber. A hug of warm scents embrace you as you enter the Essex County Mental Health Office in Elizabethtown. From the initial entrance into the building, aromatherapy works its magic on those that come here. The building is filled with natural light and warm faces, creating an invitation to many hesitant hopefuls on the road to recovery.

» Fire station Cont. from pg. 1 Built with a steel frame and reinforced to withstand natural wind, water and earthquake disasters, it would be an “essential structure,” which is required by state code for new emergency response buildings. A radio room, laundry area, hazardous materials wash station with a separate entrance, office space, training and meeting areas and eight bays would provide ample room for existing equipment and proper maintenance of that equipment, including firefighters’ bunker gear. The proposed new fi re station includes room for two ambulance vehichles and a fire boat, Hose Co. #1’s is looking to purchase through a grant fund. Having a place to decontaminate bunker gear and launder it important, Rule said. There is no decontamination or laundry area in the current fire house. And Westport fire crews have to make arrangement to borrow washing machine facilities at Elizabethtown Volunteer Fire Co. to properly clean their gear. “There is a documented risk to us from carcinogens in materials left on our clothes after a call,” Rule said. “We also would not have to dress in the street or store gear in our personal vehicles.” Not only would safety for the volunteers improve, he said, but also efficiency of operations in Westport fire response. And with that improvement, a new fire station could lower homeowner insurance rates, fire commissioners said.

Rates are based in part on a fire company’s ability to deliver service with speed and efficiency. “I think this would also renew vitality in the fire company,” Rule said. Design schematics for the proposed new fire station allow for eight bays each with a 14 x 14 foot garage door. All of the equipment would fit. The new fire station would have one bay open for expansion or for use below a second-floor loft area to practice second-story escape techniques. Two of the eight bays and a separate staging area are included in the station’s design layout for Westport EMS, gear and rigs.

PROJECT COSTS REVIEWED

Nicholas Wood, architectural designer from Vermont Integrated Architecture, based in Middlebury, presented floor plans, building elevations, site plans and estimated costs at the public meeting last week. The total cost is expected to be $3,015,743, he said. The Fire District has saved up $300,000 to put toward the new fire station, reducing the amount to bond to $2.7 million.

Wood compared the proposed $278-persquare-foot cost for Westport’s Fire Station to other facilities built recently: the new station at Upper Jay was built for $385 per square foot and Keene’s new fire house was $345 per square foot. Both of those projects also involved purchasing property. The $3 million figure for Westport includes $175,000 for design and engineering and $135,000 for “owners costs,” such as permits, site testing and connecting to water and power, both of which exist at the location on Route 22. The tax impact of the bond is calculated at $65 per year on real property valued at $100,000, or $98 per year on a $150,000 home. Ben Sudduth asked if that $98 was an annual cost, and Rule said it would be. “That’s one night out,” Sudduth said, comparing his projected tax increase to one night he might spend overnight with his family in a hotel or one family dinner out.

REFERENDUM IN LATE SUMMER

“The time for talk is over,” Rule said. The Fire District plans to bring the fire station project to referendum vote in August or

“This is my gear locker,” said Westport firefighter Adam Perry, referring to the bed of his pick-up truck. Westport firefighters don their bunker gear in the street or parking lot, and have no decontamination area to wash away debris or material after a fire.

September, and will hold additional public information sessions this summer. If taxpayers approve the bond, Westport Hose Co. #1 would get final architectural plans in the fall and put the project out to bid in Jan. or Feb. next year. The goal would be to break ground next spring. The Fire District would then have to decide what to do with the corner of property they currently own off Champlain Ave., a former repair garage. “We may have to tear it town,” Rule said, “the property may be worth more without the building.” ■

Cramped quarters at Westport Hose Co. #1 aged fire station: The hood of a fire truck won’t open fully to allow an oil change inside the garage. The space behind the trucks and between rigs is narrow, making entry and exit for personnel difficult.

IP HOSTS WORKFORCE COUNCIL:

The Essex County Workforce Council met at the International Paper Ticonderoga Mill June 4. The council includes members from business and labor, the community, the North Country Workforce Development Board and from OneWorkSource. Many of these agencies provide training services and connect employers with job seekers. Tim Stocker, mill manager, spent time with the group and talked about the success of the mill’s recent maintenance outage. He also talked about the facility’s staffing challenges. After the meeting, senior project engineer, Bill Quinn, led the group on a tour of the mill. In late August, 15 new hires will begin work at the mill. International Paper is already taking applications for another round of hiring in August.

» School board Cont. from pg. 1 Both names were approved for use by State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia and legal counsel at state ed. On formal paperwork and in data reports, however, the name must include town locations to say Boquet Valley Central School “at Elizabethtown-Lewis-Westport,” unless the school board seeks exemption by state legislature from the rule. Adding her vote for Boquet Valley, School Board member Karin DeMuro told Lawrence “honestly, you did sell me on that one,” and school board member Suzanne Russell suggested the reference to the Boquet River reflects an exact geographic area. “EAC does sound a little institutional to me,” school board member Heather Reynolds said. “Lawrence, you did a dope job,” School Board President Phil Mero said of the student’s appeal.

NAVY BLUE AND GOLD

The students selected school colors: navy blue and gold, pulling one color from each merging district. The school mascot will be the Griffin, a mythical being that is part eagle, part lion. The Griffin has represented merged Elizabethtown-Lewis-Westport school sports

School board members at E-L-W selected Boquet Valley Central School as the official name of the newly merged district and hired Josh Meyer to serve as school superintendent. The votes were two among many items reviewed and discussed as the district heads toward official opening date of July 1. Photo by Kim Dedam programs for the past several years. The school board then voted 5-2 to hire Joshua Meyer as superintendent of the new district. Meyer was hired last year to fill a combined role as interim superintendent and principal at Westport Central School. The board did not discuss the hire further after the roll call vote, but Mero said the position will pay $130,000 for the first year and Meyer’s contract will extend three years through June 2022. Two other finalists in the search were ELCS Superintendent Scott

Osborne and Brent Suddaby, principal at Stonehedge Elementary School at West Genesee Central School in Camillus.

SCHOOL IDENTITY

Other key items reviewed at the action-focused meeting Monday night looked toward setting nonresident tuition rate at Boquet Valley Central and updates from Curriculum and Technology Transition teams. The new district is considering whether to have co-valedictorian and co-salutatorian for top honor students for the next three years,

NYSDEC launches web map, reporting system for harmful algal blooms

Effort works to crowdsource blooms of toxic algae in local lakes, ponds, riverways By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER

RAY BROOK| A new map — updated online daily — will help summer swimmers, boaters, hikers and paddlers track harmful algal blooms (HABs) in lakes, ponds and rivers around the region. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation launched the “NYHABS” reporting system last week. It’s part of a $65 million HABs Initiative put in motion by Gov. Andrew Cuomo with four scientific and stakeholder summits last year. HAB Action Plans were established for 12 priority lakes, including Lake Champlain, Lake George and the Finger Lakes. According to the Lake Champlain HAB Action Plan: “Lake Champlain provides drinking water for approximately 145,000 people (20 percent of the basin’s population) ... nearly 20 million gallons of water are pumped from the lake daily to supply drinking water to 100 public water supplies ... which stresses the need to protect water quality and limit the frequency and occurrence of HABs.” Four towns in New York draw drinking water from Lake Champlain.

The project was established by DEC in coordination with the state Department of Health.

SPOTTING HARMFUL ALGAE

DEC’s crowd-sourced mapping project not only allows people to check for areas with confirmed harmful algae, but also to report places they suspect might have a toxic bloom. Information on the website helps people differentiate between a toxic bloom and nonharmful algal growth. “HABs vary in appearance from scattered green dots in the water to long, linear green

streaks, to areas that appear like pea soup or spilled green paint, to blue-green or white coloration,” DEC says in resource materials. “People, pets and livestock should avoid contact with water that is discolored or has algal scums on the surface. If members of the public suspect a HAB, report it through the NYHABs online reporting form.” “HABs have been detected in nearly 400 water bodies since 2012,” DEC said. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, based in North Carolina, HABs in freshwater “are dominated by the cyanobacteria Microcystis. This organism produces a liver toxin that can cause gastrointestinal illness as well as liver damage.” The Lake Champlain Committee also maintains a cyanobacteria tracking map for Lake Champlain and lakes in Vermont. The Lake Champlain Committee data says: “not all cyanobacteria produce toxins, and even those species that can produce toxins do not do so in all instances. You cannot tell by looking at a bloom whether or not toxins are present. Specialized tests are required to tell whether a particular bloom actually contains toxins.” Symptoms of exposure to harmful algae blooms could include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting; skin, eye or throat irritation; and allergic reactions or difficulty breathing, according to DEC. The toxic algae is also dangerous to pets or livestock that might splash or swim in or drink infested water. “Livestock and pet deaths have occurred when animals consumed large amounts of

accumulated algal scum from along shorelines and when animals groomed blue-green algal scums from their fur,” DEC said. New York’s alert and reporting system is designed to keep people and pets informed and at the same monitor water systems. “DEC is aggressively combating HABs and working to reduce or eliminate these blooms from our waters,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said of Action Plans in place this year. At NYSDOH, Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said the new report/alert system “raises public awareness of the threat that HABs pose and enhances our robust monitoring and testing protocol.” According to DEC, the exact cause of HABs is not fully understood, but toxic blooms usually occur in waterways with high phosphorus and/or nitrogen levels. ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

A tribute to dads

There are many words in many languages to describe what it means to be a father. By Dan Alexander Dad, poppa, daddy, • PUBLISHER • pa, pops, poppy or whatever you called your father, they all have rich and meaningful sentimental importance. I know in my case, while I always had great respect for my father, I never really appreciated what it meant to be a father until I held my son for the first time. Suddenly, a light went off when I realized the awesome responsibility I had just undertaken. It also became clear that the respect I thought I had for my father was never really enough. The sacrifices he made, the headaches I created for him and the times when I thought I knew better all came rushing back as I looked at the little life now in my arms. Moms are great, but fathers mean so much to the family, especially in the formative years. Having a father around while growing up was so important to my life, and now seeing my son be a great father to his children, I fully understand the importance and joys of fatherhood. While society has changed today, the thought of father as the breadwinner and protector of the family is still the image and role most of us value the greatest. Studies show time and time again how significant a father’s influence is in the life of his children. It’s too easy on Father’s Day to make a quick phone call, drop him a card or an email. But I can tell you when he’s gone, you’ll realize you’ve missed an important opportunity to share things with him that only you can do not just on Father’s Day but any day. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about Dad, who has been gone nearly 30 years now. So make the most of this day to let dear old dad know how important he has been in your life. Share a personal story of something special he did years ago that made an impact on your life. Let him know you love and appreciate him in spite of the times he made you mad or was overly strict. On behalf of all of us here at The Sun, we extend the warmest wishes to all fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers and soon-to be-fathers. We thank you for the job you do, raising our future citizens and sharing with them the values of love and the importance of family. ■

Opinion

The warm weather is finally here and for many of us in the North Country, that means spending more time outdoors. For By Billy Jones many families, all-terrain • GUEST COLUMNIST • vehicles are an important part of the North Country way of life. Whether they are used to tend our farms, access hunting camps and backcountry or just have fun on the trails, the North Country would not be the same without them. This past month, I had the opportunity to learn more about the sport, clubs and vehicles when I joined the Palmer Brook Sportsman’s Club for a ride. I always enjoy the opportunity to get out and enjoy the North Country’s recreational trails on an ATV, and I would encourage riders to get involved in their local ATV club to learn more about opportunities to ride in their community. In Clinton County, there is the OutbackRiders Club, Inc., which promotes responsible riding so that there are more opportunities to enjoy these recreational vehicles. In Franklin County, there is the Franklin All-Terrain Riders, Inc., which has been working to promote ATV safety and show that ATVs and automobiles constitute a very small percentage of area motor-vehicle accidents. Trump undercutting role of Congress

Editor’s note: This letter refers to Dan Alexander’s column, “Thoughts From Behind the Pressline: Hatred leads us nowhere,” which appeared in the June 1 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: At a time when the concept of “fake media” and media bias has become so rampant, I would like to suggest to Mr. Alexander that he take a lesson from media sources like NPR and PBS which bend over backward to present the news as evenhandedly as possible. Relabeling congressional oversight as “hate the president” does very little to inform the discussion of the public affairs that a newspaper like The Sun seeks to cover. President Trump, alone among recent candidates for the office of president of the United States, has resolutely refused to release his tax returns. Should we turn a blind eye to his attempts to undercut the constitutional role of the Congress to oversee the executive branch?

Letters can also be sent to our offices: 14 Hand Avenue: P.O. Box 338. Elizabethtown, NY 12932 Letters and guest commentaries do not reflect the editorial opinion of the newspaper and its owners.

Letters should not exceed 300 words, and must be signed and include a telephone number for verification. Letters must be sourced in an effort to ensure claims are factual. Please keep it civil. Letters containing insults and name-calling will be rejected.

We’re always looking for guest columnists to offer extended commentaries. Contact nate@suncommunitynews.com to learn more. Endorsement letters for announced political candidates are not accepted and are considered paid endorsements.

Candidate endorsement and thank you notices are not accepted unless run as paid advertising. All letters run as space permits.

The paid endorsement notice can be purchased in three sizes — a quick 50 words or less for $15; a 51-175 word endorsement for $ 50 or a 176-300 word endorsement for $75.

Likewise, if Mr. Alexander has concerns about state property taxation, would it not be better for him to do some research into “the formula provided by the state” instead of adding his own admitted paranoia to a discussion already subject to misleading political rhetoric over tax cuts that seem to generate more taxes from those it was advertised to help? If his intent is to act as a voice of the Republican Party, I think his favoritism toward Elise Stefanik would adequately fulfi ll that intent. - Richard Barney, Ticonderoga ■

‘Abortion is murder’

To the Editor: Simply put, abortion is murder. It is the killing of a baby growing inside the womb of its mother. What is being killed is a human being. It is not a malignant growth that needs to be removed. Lawyers and judges can make abortion legal, but they cannot change the fact it is murder. - Peter Klein, Indian Lake ■

To the Editor: America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. This quote is attributed to Abraham Lincoln. The truth of this quote has been illustrated by the Russian story of the last three years. Forget Russia. It is time to look at Washington to reveal the enemy from within. I believe the real story is treason, the intended coup of the government. It was not a coup d’etat because the design was to be without violence, a quiet takeover orchestrated by the ex-president and his cohorts. I do not believe Clapper or Brennan and their underlings have the smarts to plan and carry out what we have been watching beyond the cover-up. The intimidation started early when Obama lectured the Supreme Court justices at his inauguration. It continued when the Supreme Court followed his instructions

with the Obama-care tax issue. Then he did all he could to disrupt the law and order in the land by his actions with anti-law enforcement activities in incidents nationwide. The IRS was weaponized along with other departments of the government. The attorney generals of the Obama era were highly complicit! Obama set up intelligence sharing to impede leak detection. The back-up plan laid out in McCabe’s office was the distraction of the collusion “plan” which has been ongoing now over two years. It was to hide the real intent of what was to happen so no light is shed on those behind the conspiracy. The redacted documents need to be released now and those involved need to be brought to justice otherwise our country will not survive. I believe all the collusion investigators were complicit including Mr. Mueller. Take off the blinders and see the truth. Judgment is coming very soon. - Carl Thomas, Stony Creek ■

from taking advantage of our trail system. It’s time that New York state catches up and finds ways to help ensure these vehicles are properly used and registered, while simultaneously protecting and expanding our trail system. With that in mind, ATV Safety Week was June 1-9. This serves as a reminder to re-familiarize ourselves with the safety rules and regulations for driving all-terrain, side-by-side and utility vehicles. Making sure we use these vehicles safely helps to keep everyone in the North Country safe. The Franklin County Recreational Trails Association offers many helpful tips on how to be safe on every ride. Additionally, they remind us to never drink and drive and the dangers that come from exceeding the limit of riders meant for each vehicle. I ask riders to get in touch with their local association if they have questions or concerns on safe riding practices. If you do your part to maintain the integrity and safety of our trail systems, I’ll continue doing my part in Albany to protect the rights of North Country residents and ATV/UTV riders. As always, my door is open. If you have questions or comments about this or any other community issue, please reach out to my office at 518-562-1986 or at JonesB@nyassembly.gov. ■

Franklin and St. Lawrence counties, there is the ATV Ruffriders Club, Inc., which seeks to improve the image of ATV riders by training both children and adults to respect the trails and other riders. However, all of these clubs have a unifying concern. Every day, more riders, individuals and families are purchasing side-by-side utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) so that they can enjoy riding together or use for utility purposes on private land. Unfortunately, most of these vehicles exceed the 1,000-pound weight limit allowed by New York state. I have proposed legislation that would both create an ATV trail fund and statewide trail system as well as increase the weight limit to 1,500 pounds. This will allow residents across the state to register their vehicles and operate them legally on public roads to get between trails and private lands. Opponents argue that this poses a threat to the Adirondacks, but the reality is that it is already illegal to ride any of these vehicles in forest preserves. When hikers started damaging trails, we didn’t ban them from the trails. As a state, we dedicated funding, increased staff and enacted harsher penalties to preserve the trails. Banning these vehicles would create a missed revenue opportunity for our state and preclude law-abiding citizens

» Stec Cont. from pg. 1 Training and certification requirements have increased, making it much more challenging for dedicated and caring people to provide this service.” Little said a study done by the county in 2017 examining EMS needs showed that coordination among towns could help alleviate the strain on services.

PROPOSED BILL

On a carryover from May 27, the Essex County Board of Supervisors voted in favor of a resolution proposed by the Public Safety Committee to add five new Paramedic/ AEMT Critical Care positions and three EMTs to the Essex County EMS Department. On June 3, with no need for further discussion on the matter, the resolution was moved by Essex Supervisor Ron Jackson and seconded by North Elba’s Roby Politi. The board then drafted a proposed bill to bring forth to lawmakers in Albany. Stec informed the supervisors that the governor’s office was a bit wary of the “local bill” that could be seen as “setting a precedent for a statewide policy” based on an area such as Essex County that can be perceived as with “too much local government.” “When I presented this in the Assembly, that’s when Fred Thiele, an attorney by profession, came to me and came up with a draft to amend the bill and some of its wording to get this passed. He saw what you supervisors are trying to accomplish and he understood. What I’m here for is for you to consider resolution for the Assembly’s home rules. I

came here because I figured they had the time on the front end and we need as much time on the back end to get this through. I came to have papers in hand. And I do believe we will get this through at the next meeting,” Stec encouraged. Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr. (1st District) is the chairman of the Assembly Local Governments Committee and revised the EMS bill to be more acceptable to pass. Stec also addressed other bill propositions. “The ‘Occupancy Tax Bill’ would be most likely decided upon in the next two weeks,” Stec added. “I see no cause for concern there.” He had no good news about an added judicial seat to the county, as that was a more detailed process, but had not been discussed at meetings as of late.

‘DROPPED CALLS’

Recently, emergency services had been spread thin over the county that relies heavily on volunteer support and providers. This had resulted in “dropped calls” in areas that were remote or had no one on duty at the time. EMS Coordinator Patty Bashaw said, “What people don’t understand about dropped calls is it’s not that people don’t receive necessary services, but that there is a longer wait because the call is rerouted to another provider. For example, if Wilmington EMS got a 911 call but it was not picked up, it would be rerouted to Moriah EMS. Many misconstrue that a dropped call means that no one is there to serve those needing life saving measures.”

The reality is that rerouting causes a longer wait period, which can mean the difference between life and death for an individual. “It’s awesome that they put this through. We don’t have need of ambulances, we don’t need buildings, what we don’t have is personnel.”

PROCESS OF HIRING

There is a process that has to happen. Positions will be posted for 10 days, then the interviews will begin, and once chosen, new EMS employees would need to pass a physical and drug screening. The process could take a month or more. The first year of added positions will begin to serve the areas of Wilmington, Ticonderoga and Moriah; with a second phase to add a fly car in the Crown Point region and the lower sector or the county. The agenda from the Monday Regular Board meeting states that the five AEMTs will be hired at a starting rate of $21.72 per hour and the three EMTs will start at $19.03 per hour for those hired after 2009 to the department. Funds will come from the countywide EMS Consolidation Grant. “We really have Randy Preston, Wilmington supervisor, to thank for really pushing this through the governor’s office. He was the driving force. We are really looking forward to expanding our capabilities of volunteers and possibly gaining some of the best of the best as county employees that were volunteers. They really were the glue that held everything together up until now. But, we have to do the process correctly,” Bashaw commented over the phone. ■

Local program offers recipes and farm fresh foods at Friday play groups By Laura Achouatte STA FF W RITER

ELIZABETHTOWN | The Essex County WIC Program hosted a new event - Food and Fun Friday - at its Elizabethtown location on Water Street on the Public Health building lawn May 31. The WIC office was open also to allow children to utilize the play group room. Food and Fun Friday is to be held every last Friday of the month at 10 AM until November. The events are free for all to attend.

WIC AWARDED “MINI GRANT”

The event is coordinated by Essex County Health Department WIC coordinator, Krista Berger, and her colleagues, Lindsay Genier, Linda Sherman, and Jen English. The hope is to highlight updates to the WIC play group room, provide cooking support and recipes, and to increase use of farmers market vouchers within the county. WIC was awarded a $1500 “mini grant” from the Adirondack North Country Association in support of its play group. The grant has also made possible these enhanced play groups and demonstrations through the summer and fall. “Earlier this May, we were able to get a grant that helped us to make this possible. The playroom had some updating. We really are hoping for a good turnout. We are really excited about this,” said Berger.

LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS AND DEMONSTRATIONS

To promote a learning and social atmosphere for children and parents, WIC has also signed on local organizations- Cornell Cooperative Extension, ADK Action, Hub on the Hill, and Paul Smith’s College - to be feature presenters at upcoming Food and Fun Fridays. Each will present an interactive tutorial. On Friday, Cornell Cooperative Extension was on sight to demonstrate a salsa preparation from items that are grown right in the garden.

CCE also provided hands-on gardening demonstrations for children and parents to grow the vegetables needed for the salsa with seeds and soil to take home. Families will also have the option to bring home a recipe kit that includes all the ingredients of the recipe made in demonstration at each Food and Fun Friday event. This past Friday, the salsa recipe kit included: a bag of tortilla chips, Roma tomatoes, green pepper, onion, lime, and fresh cilantro. The Essex County WIC play group is an ideal outlet for children to have a safe and positive interaction that also serves to increase developmental and social interaction. Food and Fun Friday encourages this and promotes healthy eating habits.

INCREASING ACCESS TO HEALTHY, LOCAL FOODS

WIC’s collaboration with local farms and organizations to increase access to healthy and local foods has also created partnerships that support and benefit one another locally. “During the 2018 farmers market season, WIC collaborated with Carly Summers from Cornell Cooperative Extension and Adam Hainer from Juniper Hill Farm to advance a WIC goal of increasing the use of farmers market benefits. Adam decided he would double WIC participants’ coupons during the last half hour of every market and Juniper Hill also offered to provide “seconds” of vegetables. These vegetables are distributed at WIC sites throughout the county, boosting the amount of fresh, local produce available to participants,” said Berger. The collaboration continues with Food and Fun Fridays. Families can now enjoy local, farm fresh foods from Juniper Hill in the take-home recipe kits. Among the named organizations featured, booths were set up by Fidelis, ACAP Head Start, and SAIL (Southern Adirondack and Independent Living) at the Public Health building lawn to provide information and services to those that may have interest. The events are a great way to help families network and learn from resources they may not know are available to them. Upcoming dates for June include: June 27th from 9:30AM-2:30PM at the Keeseville WIC location at 1699 Front Street and June 28th from 10 AM-12 PM at 132 Water Street. The events are also in partner with AdkAction and Essex County Well Fed Collaborative. ■

» Mental health Cont. from pg. 1 Essex County Mental Health serves county residents in need of mental health counseling and coordinates services in conjunction with the Mental Health Association in Westport, as a supportive entity. May was Mental Health Awareness month. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness or NAMI, 1 in 5 adult Americans and 1 in 5 youth 13-18 years of age have a serious mental illness. Fifty percent of lifetime cases present by age 14. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death by youth 10-24 years old. Often, as a society, the words “mental health” bring to mind cinematic portrayals of mental illness. Stereotypical visuals of psychiatric patients in hospital gowns, pacing around, verbalizing incoherently, held down by orderlies to receive injections, anguish written upon their faces, lend to the stigma that has surrounded mental health for decades.

DONALDSON’S STORY

Erin Donaldson is not this stereotype. Donaldson, 30, of Schroon Lake, presents herself well-groomed, with a broad smile, versed in language and calculated speaking that could rival any motivational speaker. A spark in her eye. She only moderately shows a twinge of nervousness that anyone could exhibit when put on display. As a young girl, Donaldson described herself as “defiant” and “hard to handle.” “From about 9 years old, I think the fourth grade; I was behaviorally and emotionally unstable. I was also on several medications; they just medicated to control this.” “In about ninth grade, I started with very unhealthy coping skills; thoughts of suicide and self-harm entered my world. At 15, I tried to end my life,” Donaldson said. She was admitted into Four Winds of Saratoga Springs, a mental health facility. “I spent two weeks at Four Winds and then two weeks after I returned home, my father ended his life. Before that I didn’t know what suicide truly meant; I just felt I

tensive therapies, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and tapping. DBT therapy, founded by Marsha M. Linehan, is a form of CBT, or cognitive behavior therapy, that works to identify and change negative thinking patterns. DBT is more intensive than CBT. Tapping is a therapy technique founded by Dr. Roger Callahan that stimulates the release of stored emotions. Therapist Jackie Torrance described tapping therapy. “It’s a modality, an emotional freedom technique, in which one is tapping on meridians or pressure points. Most of our clinic has been recently trained in this technique. It’s relaxing and meditative. While tapping, we talk throughout and state, ‘Although I have this anxiety, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.’” Donaldson and her therapist are working toward Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing technique (EDMR). EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that helps to reprocess and resolve trauma that has occurred in one’s life. Donaldson has been called a success story by her therapists. “That’s what they say. I can say I have had some big life changes. I used to be on disability. I started working a year ago at Saratoga Bridges, and accepted a new position at Mountain Lake Academy.” Her jobs require her to be a support to others, which she said also helps her with her continued treatment. Her support system includes her therapists but also her mom and friends, some she has met through her group supports.

wanted to die.” Roy Donaldson was in his mid-40s. Her life began to spiral even more. “People say I’m a lot like him, I even look like him,” she said, tearing up, remembering her dad. “It was from there I went to a group home. Throughout my group home stay, my mom decided it was enough with the medications. That was the first time my eyes were open to what was really going on in my head. Sometimes medication can mask what is really going on. As with any substance, you don’t fully experience everything.” Erin eventually returned home and graduated with a regent’s diploma and was living her life without medication. But that was short-lived. “In young adulthood, I started to struggle again. I’d say I had more than 10 suicide attempts. Anything not going your way can seem more intense — a breakup; you didn’t get the job — could put you into a suicidal state. It was then that I was diagnosed with bipolar and borderline personality disorder.” In one word, “death” was how Erin described her view of life 10 years ago.

ADVICE

Donaldson gives this advice to others like her and to those trying to help someone struggling. “When you feel off, find a good routine for self-care. Reach out for help. Talk with others. And to those helping, be careful with your words. Be open-minded.” Donaldson describes her life now in one word as “thriving.”

A NEW APPROACH, THERAPY

Donaldson began going to Essex County Public Health nine years ago. It has been four years since she has successfully combined a couple of new medications with in-

“There is always a new day. In May, I make it a tradition to visit my dad and just talk to him and meditate.” Donaldson hopes telling her story will make it easier for others to reach out, for those that may have reservations about seeking help or feel that there are no options available to them.

STIGMA

May’s Mental Health Awareness also links with September’s Suicide Prevention and Awareness, as both issues often go hand in hand. Both, however, are issues that the local Mental Health Association and Essex County Mental Health keep at their forefronts and make their mission to prevent all year long. Director of ECMH Terri Morse gave a perspective on the words “mental health.” “When we use the term ‘mental health,’ we associate it negatively, whereas when we use the words ‘physical health,’ we think positive — ‘I’m strong and healthy.’ What we also need to realize is that just as we need to work on our physical health, so do we all need to put work into our mental wellbeing or mental health. That is where the stigma lies and we need to work to erase that perception. Health of mind as well as health of body.” Essex County Mental Health located on Main Street near Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union in Elizabethtown offers counseling and psychiatric treatment, and heads the clinical approach to mental health in the county. The Mental Health Association in Westport offers a range of services supportive to the clinical aspect, which include housing support, job assistance and community centers to assist in establishing relationships and friendships, along with an array of classes that are supportive to mental health and suicide prevention. A full list of services and their mission is located on their website at www.mhainessex.com. Essex County Mental Health can also be viewed online at co.essex.ny.us.com. Both programs offer hot lines available on the websites, for emergency/crisis purposes 24 hours a day, seven days a week. ■

FLW Tour returns, boosts local economy

Fishing competition gives back to environment and community

and gives anglers and FLW staff a way to give back to the local community. “We’re always gracious to be invited into communities,” Johnson said. “We’re coming in, using resources, and we’re fishing waters that belong to the city and people there. We want to give back in any way possible.”

CASTING AND CONSERVATION

PLATTSBURGH | The Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) 2019 Tour presented by T-H Marine will come to a close at the Lake Champlain finale, which will reel in anglers, economic and environmental impacts and big fish to Clinton County June 27 to 30 at the Plattsburgh City Marina.

BAIT FOR BUSINESS

Last held in 2016, the event to end the six-lake tour is returning to Plattsburgh hoping to appreciate the local environment and give a boost to the local lake-shore economy. According to the Adirondack Coast 2017 economic-impact study of Adirondack Coast Bass Fishing Tournaments, responders stayed an average 4.93 nights during each stay with an average daily spending total of $250.48, 75 percent of which used commercial lodging facilities. The tour participants supported 41.3 full-time jobs, mainly within the food service and lodging industry in Clinton County and contributed a total of approximately $3,291,710 to the regional economy. FLW Communications Specialist Brian Johnson said the event is expected to bring about $1.9 million to the area,

Th rough a partnership with the Lake Champlain Sea Grant (LCSG) program, the FLW makes sure that there are resources in place for participants to be environmentally conscious. The main goals are to fight against invasive species and make sure the lake’s bass population remains healthy. Boat-washing stations, educational boards at registrations and livewells, which help keep the fish cool, oxygenated and stress-free when finally released back into the water, are some of the systems the FLW has in place currently. Johnson said the FLW also works with local authorities to make sure everything is up to date. “Conservation is the name of the game,” Johnson said. “We want to keep those fish healthy and in the best condition possible. We want to treat these fisheries with the utmost care, and have a low impact on them.”

The family-friendly Outdoor Expo is every day at 2 p.m. The expo allows community members to come out and enjoy food, giveaways and opportunities to meet and interact with professional anglers. Johnson said 2016 winner Scott Martin will be returning to the water this year, in the hopes of going “back-to-back.” “Bring your coolers and your lawn chairs, and come out and enjoy the day with us,” Johnson said. ■

Aimee Caligiore celebrates winning the Hartford Open, her first win as a golf professional, June 9.

Caligiore wins Hartford Open HARTFORD, CONN. | Lake Placid native Aimee Caligiore scored a win at the fourth annual Hartford Women’s Open at windswept Keney Park Golf Course in Connecticut June 9, her first win as a professional golfer. According to the PGA-Connecticut Chapter, Caligiore began the day tied with Elizabeth Choi after each shot a 1-over-par 71 in the opening round on the Goodwin Golf Course on Saturday. Five holes into the final round, Caligiore found herself four strokes back after a bogey on one and a double-bogey one the fifth. “I think the nerves got the best of me on the fifth hole, but I just told myself to stick to my game plan and look at my targets,”

Caligiore said. “I told myself to forget about the double bogey because I was hitting the ball really well. I wasn’t going to force anything because you have to just try to control what you can control.” Caligiore then hit birdie putts of 12 and three feet at the seventh and eighth holes to take a lead that she would never relinquish. Caligiore finished the day with an evenpar 70 for Sunday, with a 36-hole total of 1-over 141 and a one-stroke victory over Choi. “I was so shaking,” a smiling Caligiore said of her final stroke. “I just took two practice strokes to get the feel and managed to knock it in.”

Caligiore, 28, said her first pro check will go toward expenses, including the LPGA Tour qualifying school in August. Caligiore is a 2013 graduate of St. Lawrence University, where she was a Division III All-American who won twice. She turned pro in 2014 and moved to Orlando, Fla., where she began playing on the Eggland’s Best Ladies Professional Tour. On her bag for the tournament was her father, Sandy. Caligiore next plays to play in the Georgia Open on July 15-16 and then head to the LPGA qualifying school, where she could again run into Choi. ■
