LOCAL RESIDENTS SURVIVE CRASH IN UPPER JAY
Local chosen to represent North Country at WorldPride 2019
Concrete mixer careened into East Branch of Ausable River; DEC found no engine fluids By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER
UPPER JAY | Two local residents survived a terrible collision last week when a passenger car collided head-on with a concrete mixer. The crash occurred at 9 a.m. last Wednesday just south of Trumbull’s Road on State Route 9N. The concrete truck, owned by Upstone Materials, was headed toward Keene and veered toward the river to avoid collision with a 2012 Ford Focus operated by Tara E. Pratt of Elizabethtown. The truck overturned on the bank of the East Branch of the Ausable River and landed on its side. The truck subsequently burst into flames.

HELPED OUT OF RIVER
The truck’s driver, George E. Dorr, 74, of Keeseville, was helped out of the river by a bystander, Christopher Leege, an off-duty New York State Trooper, before the truck burst into flames, police said. Pratt, 27, was entrapped in her vehicle, which ended up smashed and pinned against guide wires on the northbound side of the road.

Keene Valley Library reveals ‘Stories of Who We Are’ Oral history series features voices, photos, memories of local life, lore By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER
KEENE VALLEY | The new collection of stories at the Keene Valley Library is illuminated by voices. These stories aren’t bound in cloth, cardboard or leather. They aren’t set in silent prose to rise from a page at a reader’s pace. They are resonant, lilting at times, words framed
in local voices illustrated with photographs, some dating back decades. On June 15, Keene Valley Library officially revealed its oral history project — “Adirondack Community: Capturing, Retaining, and Communicating the Stories of Who We Are.” Library spokeswoman Olivia Dwyer said the first 34 entries are uploaded and available for the pubic to peruse from their computer or other digital device. “Now, anyone with an internet connection can access the project’s collection of audio stories and related photographs.” Accounts, she said, capture a sense of the rich social and cultural history of this valley in the Adirondack Mountains. » Stories Cont. on pg. 7
PAWS CAUSE NCSPCA’s Tuxedos & Tails hosts honorary guests this year By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER
KEENE | Black and white decor with chandeliers — in a tent — will present an elegant backdrop for this year’s Paws Cause: Tuxedos & Tails. The annual gala fundraiser for North Country Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NCSPCA) is unleashed at Marcy Field on July 14 with much excitement.
Keene Valley Library Association Director Karen Glass (in front) revealed the first 34 stories in the library’s oral history project — “Adirondack Community: Capturing, Retaining, and Communicating the Stories of Who We Are.” With Glass (in the center) is Project Grants Manager Jery Huntley, who helped design and develop funding for the online oral history collection. “However, we went home without Morgan that sunny summer day. “After some soul searching, we realized that not only did we feel that we could meet the challenge, but also we were actually energized and excited by it.” Morgan went to his fur-ever home Sept. 2 last year. The Perrys explained how Morgan had difficulty focusing and spent time pacing and circling. “And he was absolutely terrified of being left alone or put in a crate.” In about eight months, with help from local trainers and a lot of love, Morgan now responds to more than half a dozen hand signs: sit, down, come in, drop (the ball), bed and cookie, among them. “Morgan’s favorite place to sleep is now in his crate, with the couch being a close second. Sleep position is of the extremely relaxed, upsidedown and sideways fashion!” the Perrys said. Beeman said the family added fencing to protect Morgan from any threats he cannot hear. Morgan has also since gained a sister, Deja Vu, a 2-year-old Shiba Inu, who’s alert manner is balanced by Morgan’s lack of response to noise.
Wendy Beeman, chairwoman of the shelter’s board of directors said they’ve added live music to the three-hour celebration this year, along with a special four-legged guest of honor. The shelter plans to highlight how pet adoption can be wonderful even in difficult circumstances. “Morgan and his family have a heart-warming story to share,” she said.
BORN DEAF
But Morgan’s rescue goes to early efforts NCSPCA does to save animals from kill shelters. “When we have room here at the shelter, our manager Pam Rock speaks with Ruin Creek in North Carolina. They are a rescue outfit that gets animals from kill shelters,” Beeman told The Sun in a recent visit at their Francis Miller Adoption Center. “Pam takes a look at the background of the animals and then travels with staff to New Jersey to meet Ruin Creek personnel.” Tuxedo & Tails will be held at Marcy Field A rescue in 2017 brought Harper, a on July 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. mixed breed, back to Elizabethtown Live music features the band Annie in the and she was pregnant. Morgan’s inability to bark has a calming effect on his sister. “Thanks to Morgan’s influence, Deja is learning to navigate the beeps, bells and buzzes of home life with calm confidence. They really are a match made in heaven,” the Perrys said. “And we consider ourselves blessed to have them in our lives.” Beeman said the Perrys recently bought their pups life jackets so they can all go kayaking together. The adoption success is one example of how NCSPCA works with every animal to find the right family, Beeman said. “If it doesn’t work out, we ask them to come back to us,” she said. “We want them to find furever homes.” NCSPCA plans to share a success story at the gala Paws Cause annually, honoring Morgan and the Perrys this year. ■

Pride Month exhibit at the Capitol.”
On June 1, Metzgar, a local trans woman, involved with numerous LGBTQ efforts, was named by Gov. Andrew Cuomo as one of 11 ambassadors to represent their communities at the first World Pride 2019 held in the United States. The celebration takes place in New York City and is observed throughout the world, finalizing on June 30. “It’s a great honor,” Metzgar said, with her two Pomeranians resting by her side. “It took a while for me to process. I am proud to represent the North Country and tell about the beauty of the Adirondacks. It is really a LGBTQ-friendly area and I want others to visit and have great experiences and pass them on. I’d like to tell those coming to the state for World Pride to come visit us, they should not ever be afraid to·come visit rural upstate New York. MATTREss I’ve lived here for 35 years and I love it here.” A press release from the governor’s office describes the role of the ambassadors during this observance, “The winners, selected to highlight the diversity of New York’s LGBTQ community, will participate in WorldPride and Stonewall 50 celebrations to promote the LGBTQ rights movement, including participating in the Pride March. On June 1, Governor Cuomo announced the grand opening of the New York State WorldPride Welcome Center, located in New York City’s West Village just steps from the Stonewall National Monument, and on June 5, Governor Cuomo announced the grand opening of the LGBTQ

Ambassadors were chosen as part of a competition to represent their communities from a statewide campaign. The hopefuls sent in a video of themselves stating why the governor should choose them. Metzgar was encouraged by her allies in the governor’s office in Albany, David Turley and Ron Zacchi, to apply. Turley and Zacchi have been witness and support to Metzgar throughout her journey that includes: joining others at “Equality Day” in Albany, lobbying legislators on topics such as GENDA and conversion therapy, and the ANCGA organizations’ adult LGBTQ mixers and LGBTQ youth programs, as well as her involvement with Pride in Plattsburgh and several community-based programs for adults and youth. “Turley and Zacchi were the ones that encouraged me to apply. They have really been great allies and support me and the Adirondack North Country Gender Alliance and what we do,” Metzgar said.

FIRST YEAR AND STONEWALL 50
This year is a marker year. It’s the first year for World Pride in the U.S. and the 50th anniversary of the 1969 demonstrations at Stonewall Inn, a well-known gay establishment, located in Greenwich Village in New York City. the movement. I commend Cuomo and his protection of our rights and for all his efforts.” “What Stonewall did for the gay and lesbian community was to educate and now the movement continues with trans and binary issues. Perception of gender identity is more of a medical/ biological issue – not a choice issue. We are starting that process to educate and get others to be respectful of these issues. That is what I hope to do with the ANCGA. Educate employers and community members about such issues as: trans on the job, name changes, pronoun usage, and how to accept and be mindful in the workplace; insurance and survivors benefits, how to move forward to grant all couples those rights; and all those transitional items when someone ‘comes out,’”Metzgar said. “This is why Pride is important this year. Stonewall commemorates the beginning. It also shows us how far we’ve come and how much we still need to go. It pushes for us to learn our history, hear stories of that era, what happened, who were the pioneers of change. If we don’t know about our history, then how can we pass on the whole story to those down the road?” “My day job is in sales, but this is my passion. It brings me joy, especially to work with the young. There is no greater purpose than to help others be their authentic selves and to love ourselves as we are and one another,” Metzgar said. the LGBTQ community and NYC police brought a shift from the times where those of the LGBTQ community were marginalized to the advancements in human rights and amended laws of today. In 2011, the LGBTQ community made gains with the Marriage Equality Act. In 2015, Cuomo made protections for trans people under the state’s Human Rights Law, which made it unlawful to discriminate against transgender individuals. “Earlier this year, Governor Cuomo signed into law the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act and legislation banning the deplorable practice of conversion therapy, signifying a landmark victory for the LGBTQ community. Furthering protections and equality for New York’s LGBTQ community, the passage of GENDA prohibits employers, educational institutions, landlords, creditors and others from discriminating against individuals based on gender identity or expression, and makes offenses committed on the basis of gender identity or expression hate crimes under New York State law,” the press release from the governor’s office said.

NCCC ranks high with SUNY for financial stability More diverse programs, new delivery systems available for students
SARANAC LAKE | North Country Community College (NCCC) is among the top SUNY community colleges in the state when it comes to financial health and stability. A recent report issued by SUNY calculated the financial composite score for all its 30 community colleges, ranking them on a scale of +3.0 to -3.0, with +3.0 being the highest mark of financial health. The report considered each college’s reserves, ability to borrow, and financial viability and efficiency, among other factors, in determining its ranking. In 2017, the most recent year from which audit data was available, North Country Community College had a score of +2.9 and
was tied with Monroe Community College at the top of the financial health rankings. This indicator follows another recent SUNY report that shows NCCC has the secondbest fund balance/operating budget ratio among the 30 state community colleges. Based on data from the 2017-18 budget year, the college holds in its reserves or fund balance 33 percent of its operating budget, twice what is recommended by the Government Finance Officers Association. NCCC President Dr. Steve Tyrell attributed the college’s position in these rankings to sound financial planning through the addition of more diverse academic program offerings and alternative delivery systems. “These indicators show the financial stability the college has achieved and are a result of its desire to provide residents of the North Country region with new programs that are delivered in a manner that best serves these residents,” Tyrell said.
PAYING IT FORWARD:
Through its Pay-It-Forward program, SeaComm sponsored adoption costs at four animal shelters during Pet Appreciation Week June 3-8. Twentyone dogs and 21 cats at the Massena Humane Society, Potsdam Humane Society, Tri-Lakes Humane Society and the Elmore SPCA found their forever homes. SeaComm also donated a supply of pet bandannas to accompany each adopted pet. The Pay-It-Forward program, which was created in 2017 as a yearlong focus of giving back, has involved SeaComm staff in pumping and paying for gas, supplying credit union members with free smoke alarms, purchasing groceries for local residents, giving supplies to area schools and donating movie tickets. Pictured is Abu the cat, who was recently adopted from the Elmore SPCA, Inc.
ADULT LEARNERS
As NCCC and its peer institutions faced a decline of enrollment in 2011-14, it began to target adult learners with new academic program offerings. Today, 80 percent of its enrolled students are adult learners. It also began to seek niched sites to offer academic programs. In 2016, NCCC was the only community college in the state with a double-digit increase in enrollment. This was accomplished by stabilizing the current decline in enrollment and by serving correctional facilities with academic programs through the Second Chance Pell initiative. Two years ago, the college began to offer online degree programs for adult learners. Now, NCCC’s full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment currently runs approximately 200 FTEs above the smallest community colleges in the state. In 2012, it was the smallest of the 30 community colleges. Recently, the college designed new delivery
» Accident Cont. from pg. 1 “Fire and EMS personnel extricated Pratt from the vehicle and she was brought to University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh via ambulance with injuries to her lower extremities and facial contusions,” State Police Troop B spokeswoman Trooper Jennifer Fleishman said. Pratt was then transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, for further treatment, police said. Dorr was treated and released at the University of Vermont Health Network, Elizabethtown Community Hospital for a hand and leg injury, according to police reports. Firefighters from the Upper Jay Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call with engines and heavy rescue rigs. Keene Volunteer Fire Department also responded for mutual aid.
systems for adult learners. Beginning this year, students can complete three credit classes in 7.5 week-blocks. By enrolling in multiple blocks a year, they can finish their associate degree in fewer than two years. Another initiative in Ticonderoga will allow students to complete classes online and on campus Saturdays. “The recent string of small college closures in the Northeast region certainly has given institutions of higher education reason to pause and evaluate the stability of their financial position,” Tyrell said. “For it to maintain this strong financial position, North Country Community College will need to continue to explore and refine how it can deliver an academic credential in a manner that is most desirable to an adult learner. With a robust fund balance, it is well positioned to explore new strategies on how it will continue to stabilize enrollment and fortify its current financial position.” ■
Upper Jay Fire Chief Trevor Devlin said the truck was on fire when they arrived. A NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Spill response team assessed the damaged truck for potential leaks. According to DEC, no cleanup action was required. Their investigation found no significant traces of engine fluid in the waterway or surrounding area. A State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) and a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (CVEU) also responded to the crash site. Police have not released information about what caused the collision. It remains under investigation, Fleishman said. A portion of State Route 9N was closed for more than 12 hours as accident reconstruction took place before crews removed the crushed car and pulled the concrete mixer out of the river. ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
Celebrating freedom and independence
The month of July has been a special month in the hearts of American patriots for a very long time. Several years ago, the Free Community Newspaper InBy Dan Alexander dustry — through its mar• PUBLISHER • keting arm, which I’ve had the honor of chairing for the last four years — chose July as the ideal time to celebrate the services we provide across the nation. July means many things to many people. Our friends in the north celebrate Canada Day while those in France celebrate Bastille Day. Folks in Belarus, Venezuela, Argentina, Belgium, the Bahamas and the Maldives also celebrate their independence in July. For those of us here in the North Country, we are finally getting some nice, summer weather to begin getting in that good-old, kick-back summer mood. Political overtones have to some degree dampened our national celebration a little as some candidate slogans have far too many up in arms about American’s greatness, past, present or future. However, on the Fourth of July, we can put those thoughts aside as we cherish and celebrate the founding fathers and the tremendous gifts and freedoms we enjoy today. There is no doubt the freedoms we enjoy here in the United States are nothing to take lightly. Far from perfect, this nation has continued to grow and develop, correcting the wrongs, defending the rights of her citizens and seeking to improve with every generation. Like the nation, community newspapers continue to evolve, and while free community newspapers seem like a recent upstart, it was Ben Franklin back in the 1700s who defined freedom of the press. For many years, free newspapers were looked down upon by our more established paid cousins. Today, the tide has turned as many paid newspapers have fallen onto hard times due to several factors, but at the same time, free newspapers like The Sun continue to be launched by local entrepreneur publishers around the country, seeking to serve the greater good. Mr. Franklin, no doubt, would be proud. Change is inevitable in every business, and while new forms of media have changed the way we all do business, the printed newspaper still provides the most trusted source for local news, bar none. And that is something to celebrate! I recently read about one publisher that includes the following observation just above the signature line on all his emails: “To say you don’t need newspapers because you’ve got the internet is like saying you don’t need farmers because you’ve got a grocery store.” And so, whatever and however you choose to celebrate this July, on behalf of all of us here at The Sun, we hope you do so safely, with joy and respect for all. ■

Thank you for kind gesture
To the Editor: In today’s world, there is so much sadness and badness. Once in a while, something happens that shows sunshine and hope. On June 7, I was shopping at Aldi’s. After checking my order through, I realized I had forgotten my credit cards after having changed purses that morning. I was mortified! The lady in line behind me said “put it on my order.” At first, I protested, but needing the order to fill a celebration at church, I consented. This woman did not know me. The bill came to $61. I was very touched by this act of selfless kindness. Thank you Nicole Robbin for bringing me hope and sunshine that day! - Judith Bergeron, Rouses Point ■

tion Initiative (DRI), but that supposes cars were intended to be included in the plan. One purpose of the DRI is to eliminate cars making parking space unnecessary. The $10 million of other people’s money that Andrew Cuomo has promised Plattsburgh for the DRI is less about revitalization than it is about the environment. It’s a green plan which is being attempted all across New York state and the rest of the country. It’s called Hamlets 3 in Elizabethtown and the rest of the Adirondacks. To understand this, you must become familiar with Smart Growth, Complete Streets and Sustainability concepts, which came from the Clinton administration having been honed from U.N. Agenda 21 concepts. Cuomo embraces these concepts. The basic plan is to create city center housing units and regulate suburban development thereby saving the green spaces from you greedy middle class families who would prefer a backyard with a lawn. The objective is for the downtown folks to use bicycles or public transportation and spend most of their lives in small apartments and a small park for your

child and pets to share. Joe Biden’s clean energy plan reinforces this concept by using zoning “as a tool to battle climate change by altering local regulations to eliminate sprawl and allow for denser, more affordable housing near public transit.” Biden, Cuomo and other progressives want to alter your local zoning regulations so you can have denser housing near public transit. All life deserves acceptance
To the Editor: There’s been some articles in the news (knoxnews.com) about a church sermon in another state calling for the execution of LGBTQ people by passing laws requiring our society to do so. So sad to have someone claiming to be a follower of Jesus and yet expressing ideas and attitudes so far away from what I believe Jesus intended. Whether expressed in a cold, intellectual way or a fiery emotional way, to me it goes against the spirit of what Jesus came to say and do. I just hope nobody gets pulled by anger into doing the same thing he’s doing and call for him to be executed or jailed. But it reminds me of other people who give “sermons” or speeches, calling for the execution of another group of marginalized people who are often treated inhumanely — unborn children. They call for the right, and even obligation, of society to provide for the execution of these children, right up to the moment of birth — just because someone doesn’t think their existence worthwhile!

‘STORYTELLING CULTURE’
The tales reach from accounts past to present of people, work and daily life. They provide a range to explore of memorable events, from catastrophe to arts and culture and environments, from manmade to wilderness adventure. Recollections in place include artist Frank Owen’s memories of his father-in-law Adrian Edmonds and the “storytelling culture” at the turn of the 20th century. Adirondack guide, conservationist and map and trail builder Tony Goodwin recounts 75 years of his father Jim Goodwin’s discovery and creation of the Little Porter Trail. Willie Janeway, who is now executive director of the Adirondack Council, provides memories of his family’s life in Keene Valley. And Andrew Derr III recalls his family’s connection to Adirondack life in Keene Valley dating to the 1880s. Doug Downs, who currently leads the Backcountry Rescue
Perhaps because unborn children cannot protest or organize marches, they are more easily ignored. But as a society, don’t we even try to protect many animals, even unborn animals, who cannot speak for themselves? When a person calls for the execution of the unborn, whether in a cold, intellectual way or a fiery emotional way, it comes across to me in much the same way as this sermon about LGBTQ people. And it seems to me that if a person claims to be compassionate towards all people, regardless of status, yet closes their heart towards children who cannot speak for themselves, they are walking towards hypocrisy. It’s a point to note that some of the same arguments are used about both groups, such as “We don’t want them,” “They create hardship for their families and society,” and “They will be an economic and social burden to us when we have to provide care for them.” Well being it’s Father’s Day and I’m a father, I thought I’d at least be an advocate for the some of the unwanted children of the world. At some point aren’t we all? I hope you’ll think about this with an open mind and heart! - Dan Smith, Brant Lake ■

Sports BALL FOR ALL Unified basketball brings students together across North Country

ebrated its third year in Section VII — which includes high schools from throughout the Adirondacks and North Country — with a finale event May 22 at Beekmantown High School. “The results speak for themselves,” said Robert Sutphen, the athletic director at Ticonderoga, who also serves as the coordinator for unified basketball in Section VII. “You speak with anyone who is associated with unified basketball at any school or who has been out to see it and it is probably one of the more positive things that can go on in a school community,” he continued. “I think you are going to see it continue to expand. Section X has started with four teams this year and we will probably have the addition of one team next year. We welcome that. I could not be happier with the progress and we are right where we wanted it to be. You have more schools that want to do it and kids are starting to ask about it.” In Section VII, there are currently seven schools who have varsity unified basketball teams: AuSable Valley, Beekmantown, Peru, Plattsburgh High, Saranac, Saranac Lake and Ticonderoga, who was the original unified team in Section VII. The expansion in the region is part of a statewide explosion of unified sports. “We started in Section II with 12 teams, now there are 164 and we have programming at some level in every section in the state,” said

BEEKMANTOWN | Beekmantown’s Tegan Brown received the pass from his teammate and was ready to dribble to the basket. Another teammate set the screen for Brown, pointing him to where he should dribble the ball as he made his way toward the hoop. Not only were his teammates pointing him to the hoop, but so were members of the opposing team — the AuSable Valley Patriots. Brown made his way to the basket, rose up for the shot and watched as it bounced around the rim and in. Jumping through the air in celebration, Brown was embraced by his teammates as they went down the court to play defense. This is unified basketball. Through a partnership with the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) and Special Olympics New York, the unified basketball program cel-

Valley unified team, has been given a chance to pursue her basketball career thanks to the unified program. For the past two years, Kelley had been a member of the Westport Central School modified basketball team, the beginner level for high school sports in New York state. She had the chance to practice with the team, travel with them and play in games — when she felt comfortable doing so. She even got to score points in her final game. Now, Kelley shines on the Patriots’ team, having scored double-digits in some games in a role she may have not been able to have in another school — varsity athlete. “It is tiring and I am sore after games,” she said. “It has been fun playing with this group, I am going to miss it when the season ends.” ■ — This story is part one in a series on unified basketball in Section VII that also appears in the most recent edition of North Country Living, published by Sun Community News and Printing.

Olcott leads all-state girls basketball selections By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR
PORT HENRY | Moriah senior Madison Olcott leads the list of local basketball players named to the 2018-19 girls New York State Sportswriters Association All State team. Olcott was named to the first team in Class C. The do-it-all combo player was anywhere on the court the Vikings needed her, playing from point to post and leading the team in rebounding, steals, assists and blocked shots while being second on the team in scoring. Olcott was a member of the 1,000-point club since her junior year, finishing with 1,291 career points. Viking teammate McKenzie Sprague was named to the second team in Class C, as the leading scorer for the season and all-time in Moriah program history with 1,338 career points, also having been a member of the 1,000point club since her junior season. Sprague also saw time in the post for the Vikings, but was always a threat from behind the threepoint arc and saved some of her biggest scoring performances for the postseason. Together, Sprague and Olcott won five straight sectional titles in Class D and C, with each making their third straight all-state team. Also in Class C, Seton Catholic senior Nicole Bullock was named to the eighth team. Bullock, whose season was cut short by injury, made her way onto the Section VII 1,000point list, finishing with 1,078 career points.
STOREY TOP CLASS D PICK
In its final season as a school, Westport saw freshman guard Rachel Storey named to the second team in Class D. Storey was also a master of all trades for the Eagles, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. Running the point, Storey helped to lead a young Eagles squad to their 20th Class D championship. She follows her sister, Ellie, who was an all-state selection in her senior season last year. Johnsburg scoring threat Khaleah Cleveland was named to the third team, as the insideoutside offensive threat lead the Jaguars in scoring and finished her career with 1,104
The Section VII girls basketball players named to the all-state team include (from top left): Madison Olcott, McKenzie Sprague, Rachel Storey. Khaleah Cleveland, Kya McComb, Maria Baker, Kate VanAuken, Nicole Bullock, Shawna McIntosh, Hannah Palmer, Abby Racine, Ally Post and Payton Couture. File photos points, good for 44th on the Section VII all-time girls scoring list. Bolton sophomore teammates Maria Baker and Kate VanAuken were named to the fifth and seventh teams, respectively, as the duo has led the Jaguars to two MVAC southern division titles in as many seasons and back to the sectional finals, where they fell to Storey and the Eagles. Both players are expected to reach the 1,000-point milestone in their junior seasons. For VanAuken, it is
her second all-state team appearance. Crown Point teammates Shawna McIntosh and Hannah Palmer were named to the seventh and ninth teams, respectively, with McIntosh leading the Panthers from the point and Palmer proving to be a scoring threat from all parts of the floor.
MCCOMB LEADS CLASS B
Northeastern Clinton point guard Kya McComb was named to the fifth team in
Class B this season, a year after being named to the fourth team during the Cougars’ final four run. Teammate Abby Racine also made the all-state team for the second year, as the Cougars’ main post force was named to the 11th team, up from her 12th-team selection in 2018. The duo helped NCCS repeat as Class B sectional champions. Saranac sophomore Payton Couture and Peru senior Ally Post were named as honorable mention members of the Class B all-state team. ■
