Preston remembered for dedication Wilmington supervisor served his community until the end By Laura Achouatte STA FF W RITER

WILMINGTON | Randy Preston’s twoyear battle with cancer ended Thursday, July 18. The 60-year-old Wilmington supervisor and veteran of his local Wilmington Volunteer Fire Department was known for his “real and true” nature and devotion to Wilmington, Essex County and surrounding communities. He was an effective lawmaker, known for his compassion and conviction and known to speak bluntly but with sincerity.

REMEMBERING PRESTON

Wilmington lost a devoted leader and proponent for his town, many of those who knew or worked with Preston said. He was known for spearheading and being instrumental to the passage of the recent Essex County EMS bill that secured millions of dollars to create a unified EMS system in the county. He also

membrances of Preston as a “go-getter,” “honest and hard-working,” and “you knew where you stood with him.” Yet, he also “knew his opinion was not the only opinion in the room.” His wife, Michelle Preston, wrote on her Facebook page the day Preston succumbed to his two-year battle with cancer,

“Today I lost the love of my life. Words cannot describe what a loving and caring man he was. He chose to raise 5 children that were not his by birth but loved them all with every ounce of his being. He loved his little Town of Wilmington and was always striving to make it better. The years of dedication to the Wilmington Fire Department showed his true passion. Many know he was a tough and stubborn individual which allowed him to be with us the last 2 years as he bravely battled his horrible disease. My life was forever changed the day he came into my life. He made me into a stronger, braver and wiser woman and I will forever be grateful to him. He will live forever in my heart. Thank you my love for sharing the last 10 years of your life with me. I will love you forever.” “We may have butted heads a time or two, but his best trait was, in my opinion, he would tell you what he thought directly,” Westport Super Michael Tyler said. “You always knew where you stood with him. Wilmington will surely miss him.”

Nanobrews, apiary reclaim corner spot in Bloomingdale

Hex and Hop ready to pour

“The region has rich roots. The authenticity and attitudes of people we’ve met, especially some of our local inspirations, have been deeply encouraging.” Sense of place is part of the long-term business outlook, he said. “We love the vibrant art and music scenes that thrive up here. It’s a great place to live, raise a family, and join up.” Welcomed already with pop-ins, calls from locals and Route 3 commuters, hands-on support, friends and the swell of other local businesses, Delaini and Mikesell believe their vision is on its way to finding a genuine North Country niche. Products at Hex and Hop will look to bees, unique honey and honeycomb and hops, flavors pulled from wildflowers and from local growers. Raw wildflower honey is used in some of their beer. “We’ve got a double IPA that has a touch of honey, a New York cherry wheat with honey that we’ll be brewing in a few days,” Delaini said. “And then we made a Belgian strong — Braggot style beer with 100 pounds of honey in it.” Delaini said local artisans and growers will provide resource workshops at Hex and Hop in the coming months. “Lauren Richard, of Far North Natives, who has planted native plants throughout the property, will focus her workshops on utilizing native plants to support local pollinators, even in a parking lot.”

By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER

BLOOMINGDALE | A love of bees and brews have fused to reclaim a storefront long vacant here. Two young families hand-picked the spot at the old Blooming Market to blend craft brewing and an apiary. Just beside the four corners, Hex and Hop sits off state Route 3’s busy approach to Bloomingdale, a cornerstone in St. Armand. Ethan Mikesell and Nick Delaini carved a plan from a joint vision pointed at life in the Adirondacks and are ready to open their craft brewery/apiary with a “Grand Pour” on Saturday. Their business draws from community roots, hops and blooms. “Both beekeeping and brewing are some of the oldest occupations known to man,” Delaini said. “After 11 and a half years as a professional apiarist, I remain deeply in awe and fascinated by honeybees. Bees and pollinators are vital, complex creatures, so our ability to work with them, showcase them, and utilize their honey in some beers is a real chance to honor them and explore some fundamental relationships.” For Mikesell, brewmeister and Hex and Hop co-founder, beer-craft mixes art and science in a way that he says is challenging and extremely satisfying when you get it right. “As a small brewery, our goal is to provide the highest standard we can and help promote craft of all kinds across the Adirondacks,” Mikesell said of their goal. “I hope our customers can really taste the time and thought we put into our beers.”

We are both driven by high quality, farm roots and being community-focused. When we started discussing where to do this, my wife, Dani, and I both suggested the Adirondacks. When we brought Ethan and Stephanie up to visit, they agreed.” Not only is the region gorgeous, Delaini said, the community itself has inspired them. “There’s a real sense up here that people are capable of doing things and doing them for the better. It’s a hands-on area. The problems are there, but the solutions are attainable. Small works up here. This was an area we all loved and an area we felt we could truly make a difference in.

FARM ROOTS AND FOCUS

Originally from Connecticut, Delaini moved here with his wife, Dani, two years ago, and Mikesell came to the park from the Midwest with his wife, Stephanie. “I’ve been managing honey bee colonies in the North Country for the Boston Honey Company seasonally for the

Adirondack Outdoor Enthusiast opens in E’town Store offers outdoor adventure goods, haven for artisans to sell wares By Laura Achouatte STA FF W RITER

ELIZABETHTOWN | In 2017, Adirondack Outdoor Enthusiast opened in Essex on Lake Champlain. However, proving to be a “foot-traffic-off-the ferry-from-Vermont” sort of venue for operations, where tourists mostly came to dine, the new outdoor sporting store needed a new base of operations that might serve its purpose more effectively.

RELOCATING TO ELIZABETHTOWN

That’s when Jeremy Degroff and his wife, Cheri, chose the vacant venue next to the Friedman Realty office between Bub’s Pizza and the outreach Life Church at the mouth of Water Street in Elizabethtown. The store was relocated and opened its doors this past May. The hopes are for a larger client base that may boost sales and to get the new business some momentum among its counterparts. The shop is poised at the heart of traffic routes toward the bustling tourist destinations of the High Peaks and in the center of the county seat. The fact that Elizabethtown has more proven tourist traffic encourages the DeGroffs to believe the new location and the outlook for their store to be promising. “We’ve got Lake Placid and Keene on one side and Essex on the other and all the other hiking areas in between. Elizabethtown has the shopping areas and is a stop on the way for tourists. It’s right in the middle of the outdoor rec-

reation area, rather than being so far out, as we were in Essex,” Jeremy DeGroff said.

20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

DeGroff grew up in Westport and knows the area and its hiking trails well, an avid outdoorsman himself. He has been in the outdoor retail business for 20 years, working for other local businesses in the industry. He and his wife joined forces and gathered savings, a couple of small business loans, and family and friends’ support and launched Adirondack Outdoor Enthusiast in 2017 as a small outdoor sports niche store. They also have an online presence and store on their website: adirondackoutdoorenthusiast.com. “Each year we’ve seen a small profit, but we’d like to grow our business to be full-time. We just joined and became a member of the local Chamber of Commerce. We want to get our name out there and support other businesses of the area as well. We should all support each other as small businesses. For example, we know some might stop for fishing baits at our store, but we would encourage them to go to the guy in Lewis that has the fishing and hunting store, and vice versa with him, since we are geared towards outdoor adventure sports,” DeGroff said of his business hopes. Adirondack Outdoor Enthusiast’s Facebook page says they are an “outdoor lifestyle business with gear and apparel for your Adirondack and outdoor adventures, mountain to water, providing outdoor inspired artisan works, gifts, and regional information.” “We have shoes, clothing, tools; the big name brands people love but we also support and consign with local artisans and sell their wares at the store, too, like we do with Hub on the Hill of Essex and Martha’s Soaps of Keene. We have artisan jewelry, select farm to table products. We really like to support others as we have been supported ourselves,” DeGroff explained. ■

ECH TO HOST BLOOD DRIVE JULY 29 ELIZABETHTOWN | The University of Vermont Health Network, Elizabethtown Community Hospital will host a blood drive from noon to 3 p.m. Monday, July 29, with the Adirondack Regional Blood Center. “This is the time of year when we need blood the most,” said Nancy Roberts, Ad-

irondack Regional Blood Center nurse, “because participation in blood drives can decrease in the summer months.” The blood drive is open to anyone in good general health over age 16. Donations of all blood types are needed and will be used at area hospitals.

“Your blood donation can help save the lives of patients in the Elizabethtown and Ticonderoga emergency departments,” Elizabethtown Community Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Julie Tromblee said. Blood donations are also used in the hospital’s chemotherapy and infusion de-

partment and inpatient unit. The blood drive will be held in partnership with the Adirondack Regional Blood Center, a nonprofit coordinated by The UVM Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, which supplies blood to hospitals throughout the region. ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

Pride and division

Last weekend during the heatwave, I had the chance to watch several television programs on the 50th anniversary of By Dan Alexander the NASA moon landing • PUBLISHER • by Apollo 11. It was most interesting reliving some of those memorable days back in the ’60s and reflecting on America today. The world came to a complete stop as man stepped foot on the lunar surface only a few years removed from Pres. Kennedy’s bold declaration that we would land on the moon before the end of the decade. Without the aid of today’s computer technology, once the challenge was embraced, the nation went about developing the machines and knowledge to accomplish the mission, and the nation was behind them through the Mercury and Gemini phases. Then came the disaster of Apollo 1, and a congressional hearing was held for the cause of the launchpad fire that killed three astronauts during testing. Republicans and Democrats faced off over who was to blame. Democrat Walter Mondale believed the money spent going to the moon was a waste. He believed the funds were better spent on national humanitarian issues. Astronaut Frank Borman was asked the pointed question of blame, and his answer was a simple one. Yes, there were mistakes made, but we were all to blame. Borman explained, we always knew there was a risk of fire, but we thought it would occur in space. Good men and women never imagined it would occur on Earth. As citizens, we all took great pride in their accomplishments, but at the same time, the nation faced great division over the Vietnam War and racial tension was still high. Together, we mourned the senseless assignations of John Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. That’s what got me thinking about the differences between now and then. We had great differences during that time, but as a nation, we united in times of joy, victory, defeat and tragedy — unlike today. It seems to me that when one of those events occurs today, we use it as an opportunity to divide versus unite. To point the finger of blame versus offering the arms of consolation as Sen. Mondale did after the congressional hearings of Apollo 1. Throughout our history, there have always been great differences of opinion, but when it mattered most we found ways to unite - even after the Civil War. Someday once again when we get past this tumultuous time we are currently caught up in, the unity of our great melting pot will surely return. ■

Retirement Enhancement Act sticks it to our kids

To The Editor: Well, I’ll be darned. Congress had us convinced that they would only soak the rich with higher taxes, but being clever rascals, they are currently restructuring your IRA and 401 accounts that you’ve been saving in for 20 to 30 years. Now that there’s a pot load of total money in IRA/401s the government wants some of it. Congress doesn’t have to admit to raising taxes on you since they are changing withdrawal methods that will result in higher taxes for your kids. It’s called the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act, known by the acronym Secure. It has passed in the House, 417-3, and is expected to pass in the Senate.

Currently anything left in your IRA or 401 when you pass can be given to beneficiaries such as your children who can then “stretch” the withdrawals out over their lifetime to minimize the tax impact. This minimizes the tax impact on the withdrawal and its impact on total income. Congress is changing the rules so that your kids will have no more than 10 years to withdraw any remaining IRA money, which then creates a higher tax rate for the withdrawal and potentially a higher tax rate for the beneficiaries’ total income. As much as one-third of an inherited IRA could get gobbled up by your government with this new plan. When Congress told you they were only going after the inherited estates of the rich they were lying. The main thing the Retirement En-

hancement Act actually enhances is tax revenue for a government that refuses to spend less and views our children’s ability to minimize taxes as a “problem.” There are a few minor potential positive aspects, but they are a small sweetener in exchange for sticking it to our kids. - Ken Fenimore, Elizabethtown ■

U.S. Constitution is ‘for the people’

To The Editor: For those of us who harbor un-Christian sentiments toward any immigrant, I must remind them that the Preamble to the Constitution (the law of the land) opens with the construct “We The People” … not “We The Citizens.” - John T. Maddix, Plattsburgh ■

4-H EXHIBITS

The 4-H members will find a new gallery at Floral Hall this year due to the renovations in progress on the historical Cornell Cooperative Extension building, located on the county fairgrounds, the usual venue for the 4-H exhibits. They will be sharing Floral Hall with the general public exhibits but have their own wing in the building located to the back of the CCE building. The tiger show is newly added entertainment featuring real animals. The Black Cat Hell Drivers are returning this year with a show of stunts and thrill using show cars and have been a crowd-pleaser in past fairs.

‘On the Center Lawn’ presents ‘The Rainbow Garden’ It is the last chance to enjoy live performances ‘On the Center Lawn’ – the final Tuesday of July will feature storytelling By Arin Burdo and salsa. Michael Caduto • COLUMNIST • presents “The Rainbow Garden: Celebrating Cultural Diversity” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 30. Popular author and master storyteller Caduto uses song, story and dance from

several indigenous cultures to present a picture of humankind as a cultural garden — a rich, interesting and exciting variety of peoples. We are all native to some region of the world, and our roots reach out and mingle in the fertile soil of humanity. Caduto’s most recent children’s book, “The Garden of Wisdom: Earth Tales from the Middle East,” received a Storytelling World Award. “Catch the Wind, Harness the Sun” received the national Teacher’s Choice Award, and his book “Earth Tales from Around the World” was awarded the Aesop Prize for literary and artistic excellence by the American Folklore Society. “Masterful storytelling in a voice that soothes like a gentle breeze,” according to a Washington Village School

Tip your hat to this little Lady Say hello to LADY, another super-sweet beagle here at the NCSPCA (we do have more than just beagles By Bryeanna Villani at the shelter, I promise). • COLUMNIST • Lady is about a year old. She is a small beagle but she has a huge, loving personality that is just waiting to fill some very lucky family’s home. Lady came to the shelter pregnant at around 10 months old, barely more than a puppy herself. Here at the shelter she gave birth to five absolutely adorable Adirondack mutts, who have all gone on to loving homes. Lady wasn’t the most attentive first-time mother that we’ve seen, though how could you blame her at her young age? Now that her puppies are gone, Lady has been spayed and is ready to go back to being the center of attention herself. And the center of attention, or the center of your lap, is exactly where Lady wants to be! This little girl is happiest when she’s in the company of others and is not a dog who anyone would describe as an independent single lady. She does have some separation anxiety, so she would fit in beautifully with a busy and established family, particularly one that already has a dog who could use a loving companion. Lady gets along great with other dogs and also with cats, but her true passion is people and particularly kids. Lady is in her glory around children who want to pet her and play with her, who will cuddle with her and let her cover their faces with adoring doggy kisses. The combination of her age and her breed means Lady really enjoys being active. She loves going out for walks and has a habit of bringing one of her

teacher in Vermont. A lawn concert featuring the Rick Davies Thugtet starts at 7 p.m. The Thugtet is an exciting and high-energy band specializing in Latin and funk music. The group pays homage to founder Rick Davies, who composed and arranged most of the music they perform. They play various selections from Davies’ three internationally-known CD recordings as well as a variety of cover songs.

Here is the Thugtet lineup: Herm Matlock on trumpet, Neil Wright on tenor sax, Mike Nystoriak on trombone, Bob Garrow on bass, Corey Marsico on guitar, Michael Lewandowski on drums and Lowell Wurster on congas. Do not forget to bring a lawn chair or blanket. Performances will be held rain or shine, moved indoors if necessary. All performances are free! Papa Duke’s BBQ will be on site 5:307:30 p.m. offering smoked goodies like ribs, brisket, chicken, pulled pork and mac and cheese. KNOWLEDGE AND CONNECTIONS

In the early 2000s, Connin served as founding director for the Adirondack Park Aquatic Invasive Plant Program – and was instrumental at implementing the program policies that are in place today. Connin traveled across the United States from Arkansas to Texas to Oregon, conducting ecological research, teaching at several colleges and participating in field practice. His previous position was with the Adirondack North Country Association of Saranac Lake in which he was director of the Clean Energy Program that was designed to incorporate and develop plans of renewable energy into local communities. “I worked with stakeholders in the Adirondacks to develop energy programs in the community and I bring those connections from that side of things to what I can do here,” Connin said while addressing the Essex County Board of Supervisors July 8. “We are working towards aligning the counties’ resources and local businesses involved in the programs to meet the needs of the community. We will be collaborating with St. Lawrence County Extension to see how we can work together and gather our strengths across four counties as one of the first objectives on the list since I’ve started.”

‘DEEPEN AND WIDEN’

“There have been talks with Joe Keegan at North Country Community College for workshops and education collaborations for area farmers, a new food pantry coming to Crown Point at the old health center, programs for youth 4 to 8 years old to spur a familiar tradition to attend and use farmers markets, and increasing fresh food access to children and the elderly,” Connin said of the agenda for Cornell Cooperative Extension. “I have really joined a great group of people and they truly are the ones who get the day-to-day accomplished. I have been in administration for a while now and the best part is helping others. I really enjoy helping others; helping people develop as professionals, and I hope I can help the organization, itself, deepen and widen under my guidance.” To find out about happenings, to support and/or volunteer with CCE, visit essex.cce.cornell.edu. ■

“A Vigil to End Human Detention Camps,” the Lights for Liberty page states, “will bring thousands of Americans to detention camps across the country, into the streets and into their own front yards, to protest the inhumane conditions faced by refugees. “Simply put, our country is at a tipping point. Therefore, Lights for Liberty seeks to create this event in solidarity and allyship with communities most impacted by the abuse of our immigration system. We seek to work in solidarity with grassroots organizations both new and historic, those who are well-funded and on a shoe-string budget. We are moved to mobilize with anyone: moms, dads, and people of moral conscience who cannot stand to see families and communities destroyed.”

TEDRA COBB AND GUEST SPEAKERS

At the Riverside Park vigil, one woman got up and spoke, voice wavering, “What we are doing to the children at the border is unconscionable! We all have a responsibility to teach our history. We can’t do it better if we don’t know what we’ve done wrong.” Another audience member that moved to Saranac Lake recently came up to the stage. “I learned of a 2-year-old that died from a sinus infection. This is a non-issue to have needs met and availability to our most vulnerable. It’s not a partisan issue. It’s a human issue,” she stated while weeping. Another attendee and speaker at the vigil was NY 21st Congressional district candidate Tedra Cobb. Cobb spoke on stage around 8:30 p.m. “I’m here to join you and the chorus around the country to choose between right and wrong. Is it a yes or no? Will we stand up for humanity?,” Cobb exclaimed. The crowd shouted a resounding yes. “I speak from experience. When my brother was 3

stuffed toys along with her for the jaunt. It’s a cute habit that recalls the famous “Peanuts” character Linus, taking his blanket along everywhere he goes. She can’t seem to get enough time outside, as the second she’s brought inside she’ll whine around the toy in her mouth while looking at the door. Lady is petite even for a beagle and she has short little legs, but she’d be a great hiking partner on easy trails with her unending enthusiasm for the outdoors. Or if hiking’s not your style, Lady would also love a big fenced-in yard to run around and play in. She doesn’t get the concept of fetch but that doesn’t mean that she’s not up for fun, because the fun is playing with you! Wherever you go, Lady wants to be with you, sitting at your feet looking up at you with her adoring gaze. You couldn’t ask for a better best friend than Lady. ■ — A weekly column by Bryeanna Villani, marketing and communications coordinator, that works to publicize the shelter’s adoptable pets. These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.

to make life better for our constituents. He was a true champion who never stopped fighting. Randy loved Wilmington, he loved the Adirondacks and he loved public service. We couldn’t have asked for more. And, most importantly, he loved his family. We will all miss him dearly.” Willsboro Supervisor and friend Shaun Gillilland spoke of his colleague and friend. “He was a tremendous, loyal friend and unwavering advocate for the county and Wilmington. He was a larger-than-life type of man. His mark is all over Wilmington, looking at it now from many years ago. He always pursued to do the right thing. I will truly miss him.” Working together at the time, Jay supervisor Randy Douglas, then Keene supervisor Bill Ferebee and Preston managed the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene in 2012 and traveled to lobby in Albany and Washington, D.C. The latter introduced Preston to Cuomo at one of these meetings and Preston was able to grab his attention about the needed attention to “preserve a national landmark”

that was the Whiteface Memorial Highway. “He was one of the very first to push me to run for the board,” Douglas said. “It was amusing; a Republican, a Democrat, and an Independent all working together. But, he showed us. He showed us how things can work and we can work together for our towns. I will miss him dearly and I am thankful he entered my life.” Deputy Clerk to the Board of Supervisors Dina Garvey, holding back tears, said, “He was not like everyone that passes through here. Some supervisors come and do their jobs, and that’s ok, that’s what they are supposed to do. But, Randy, he always made it a point to stop in and say hello and always asked me about my family and my boys.” Calling hours for Preston were held Monday, July 22, at Thwaits Zaumetzer Funeral Home in AuSable Forks. Preston’s funeral was July 23. The family asks that donations be made in his honor to the Wilmington Fire Department and to Hope for Miracles (hopeformiracles.org). ■

Catherine Otis (Cathy) Farrell

KEENE | Catherine Otis (Cathy) Farrell, 77, of Brooklyn and Keene, NY, passed away on July 18 at her summer home in Keene after contending for more than 15 years with what her doctors think was pre-frontal temporal dementia. She was surrounded at her death and the days before it by her husband of 50 years, Greg Farrell, her sons Andrew and Nick Farrell, her daughter-in-law Chloe Farrell, her grandchildren Cormac and Fallon Farrell, her future daughter-in-law, Krista Van Wart, and her caregiver and friend, Vanecia Johnson. Because of the dementia, she retired in 2004 at age 62 as Dean of the Division of Cooperative Education at LaGuardia Community College, where she had been a professor and administrator for 32 years. She wrote a book, Changing Lives: LaGuardia Stories, about students whose lives had been transformed by their LaGuardia experience. Before joining the LaGuardia faculty, she did anti-poverty work in Trenton and New York City. Cathy was the daughter of George and

Louise Otis, of Princeton, New Jersey, and the direct descendant of Elijah Graves Otis, who invented the device that keeps elevators from falling, thus making high-rise buildings practicable. She grew up in Princeton and graduated from Miss Fine’s School in 1960 and from Vassar College in 1964. She earned two masters’ degrees from Columbia. Cathy was a beautiful woman with the body and grace of a ballet dancer, which she was, and the soul of a social worker, which she brought to everything she did. She was uncommonly decent and fair, and a natural-born counselor. Because of a life-altering summer exchange with a French-speaking family in Switzerland through the American Field Service (AFS), she developed a passion for Mediterranean languages and spoke fluent French and Italian and pretty good Spanish. An outstanding wife and mother, she organized her household, husband and sons with a light and compelling touch. In 1976, with the help of 50 of their closest friends, she and her husband built an off-the-grid yurt in Keene, NY, and they lived in it in summer and visited it in winter for 33 years until she persuaded her husband they should have a real house, with a bathroom, built on their property in Keene, which they did in 2009. She designed the house, and was there when she died. There are no calling hours. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. The M.B. Clark Funeral Home, Inc. in Lake Placid, NY is in charge of arrangements. Relatives and friends wishing to share a memory, upload a photograph or leave condolences may visit mbclarkfuneralhome.com. ■
