Welcome to the 2017 Section 10 Football season. We are pleased to partner with Denton Publications to bring you this great league wide game day program. As the upcoming season approaches I think of all the great history that North Country football fans have has experienced for over 100 years.

GOUVERNEUR

WILDCATS

Last season Gouverneur and Massena shared the Northern Athletic Conference FRANKLIN ACADEMY (NAC) championship with undefeated HUSKIES regular seasons. The game between Gouverneur and Massena was not played due to the tragic loss of Gouverneur player Brennan Stevens. Massena would go on to represent Section 10 as the Class A representative in the NYSPHSAA playoffs where they were defeated by Section 2’s Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in the first round. In Class B, Potsdam would go on to defeat MASSENIA Malone for the Class B Section 10 Championship before RED RAIDERS succumbing to Section 7 champion Peru in the first round of the NYSPHSAA playoffs. In Class C, Ogdensburg was able to avenge a regular season loss to Gouverneur for the Section 10 Class C Championship. OFA would go on to defeat Section OGDENSBURG 7 champion Saranac Lake, Section 2 champion Greenwich, BLUE DEVILS and Section 9 champion Burke Catholic on their way to the state championship final at the Carrier Dome where they lost a very exciting game 39-34 to Section 4 champion Newark Valley. That was the first time a Section 10 football school made it to the NYSPHSAA championship game. In Class D, Tupper Lake represented Section 10 versus Section 7 champion Ticonderoga. The Canton Golden Bears, Malone Huskies, and St. Lawrence Central Larries will be looking to build upon their experiences from last year as they all look to impact what promises to be a very exciting NAC season in 2017. The NAC for the 2017 season consists of: Class A Massena, Class B schools Gouverneur, Malone and Potsdam, Class C schools Canton, Ogdensburg, and St. Lawrence Central, as well as Class D Tupper Lake. The schools will compete for the NAC championship and then break off into classes for the NYSPHSAA playoff purposes.

Throughout the 2017 NAC football season players from all over Section 10 will be working hard and having fun as they strive toward their common goals. For many, this process will create lifelong memories and friendships. No doubt some players will most certainly make their marks for future generations of North Country football fans to reflect upon. I hope you all enjoy the football and appreciate the hard work TUPPER LAKE and dedication that these players have invested in their LUMBERJACKS seasons. The coaches and players appreciate the outstanding support that they receive from their communities. I know I feel very lucky to live in northern New York. Please be a great fan and enthusiastically support your team while respecting each opponent. Best Regards,

The Canton Golden Bears look ahead to the 2017 season, after 2016 proved to be a rebuilding year for the program. After the sudden departure of previous head coach John Vandervere for a new job in Pennsylvania just days into the preseason, Tom Cloce took over the reins with his enthusiasm and positive drive, and guided the Bears to a season-opening 67-26 victory over the Malone Huskies. But then Canton suffered a string of five losses before closing out the regular season (2-5) on a high note by beating Tupper Lake 54-14. The gold and brown gave top-seeded Gouverneur a strong 35-20 battle, but fell in the Section X Class C semifinal encounter to close out the 2016 campaign. In 2017, the Bears could emerge as a potential dark-horse competitor in the Northern Athletic Conference. With a solid corps of veterans and hard-working and attentive newcomers, Coach Cloce’s team might get overlooked. Athletic Director and Assistant Coach Bill Porter said, “For the first time in many years, we will have a place kicker, Kieran LaFaver, who might get us the extra points we need in a close game. We have capable young guys who can provide us with depth. This team comes to practice early, stays late and is very receptive to everything we show them. If they acclimate to the system we are teaching them, we could be quite competitive this season.” Canton will be led by junior quarterback Declan Porter who took several snaps under center last year, being called up from the JV ranks. Declan is expected to provide a mix of rushing and passing to keep defenses honest and guessing. His 6’7” frame will give him a good look over the line to his receiving targets that will include senior Cody Sipher who emerged as a strong deep threat last season. Patrick Recker at tight end and Greg Mastro as wide receiver will also provide balance in the Bears’ receiving patterns. In the backfield, junior fullback Ian Rayburn and classmate Bob Beaudin at halfback are expected to see plenty of action. The Bears coaching staff is also expanded this season to include Corey Maxner, Todd Furnia, Troy Miller, Tim Olmstead and Corey Jordan.

The Gouverneur Wildcats get ready to take the field for the 2017 season coming off the heels of a very strong 2016 season. Going 6-0 in the regular season and sharing the Section X regular-season title, the Wildcats were ranked fifth in New York State in Class C and posted their first undefeated regular season since 2001. Gouverneur started with strong victories over Potsdam, Canton and St. Lawrence Central, launching the 2016 season at 3-0. The Wildcats then returned home for their annual Wall of Fame Weekend that was highlighted by the induction of retired NFL and Rutgers University running back Brian Leonard. The game featured a battle of unbeatens as Gouverneur faced off against rival Ogdensburg. In a thrilling battle that saw the Blue Devils jump to a 10-0 lead early, the Wildcats came out on top defeating the eventual New York State Class C Finalist 3531 at home. Gouverneur closed out the regular season with big wins over Tupper Lake and Malone for an undefeated 6-0 regular season. However, the Wildcats eventually fell in the rematch with O.F.A. for the Section X Class C title 36-6. With dawn of the 2017 season, Coach Shawn Devlin is looking to fill several spots emptied by graduated players, including All Northern selections at running back, linebacker and several offensive and defensive line positions. Said Devlin, “We have good numbers with 32 athletes on the team. We are looking to fill vacated positions with players like Garrison Gonyeau (RB), Alex Fuller (RB), Jake Link (LB), Logan Garrison (OL/DL), Carter Hance (OL/DL) and Tanner Donaldson (OL/DL). We will rely on the play of returning starters Andrew LaPlant, Robbie Klimowcz, Jordan Countryman, Peyton Schmitt and senior quarterback Connor Fenlong. “We have a good team makeup of guys who work hard and are fun to be around. We have good rapport with each other which makes practice much more fun,” said Devlin. “Section X Football has been getting better each year, which you can see in the NYS Team Rankings. The league, I believe, will again be competitive within itself and there will be some great matchups. We intend to approach every game like we are preparing to win a championship, because one bad game could cost you just that, the chance to play for a championship.”

For the Franklin Academy Huskies of Malone, the 2016 campaign was a deep rebuilding season. The Huskies struggled to gain just two wins, both coming against the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks, one victory during the regular season and the other in non-league action. The Huskies battled the Potsdam Sandstoners in the Section X Class B championship game, but eventually fell to the Sandstoners 38-12 to close out the season. The F.A. Huskies are looking to turn the page with better outcomes in 2017. Huskies Head Coach Greg Marshall said despite facing two tough opponents (Potsdam and Gouverneur) for the Class B title this season, his team should be tough and competitive. The Huskies will feature two quarterbacks – Matt Marlow and Hunter Swan – who should both see action and provide different a different set of options against the opponent’s defense. Swan is expected to also make up part of the rushing corps when not calling signals. He will be joined by the speedy Timothy Langdon and Tyler Preve in the backfield. Jordan St. Hilaire, Anthony Lamica, Nathan Welch, Ian Maneely, Joey Benaware and Evan Keegan will bring their experience to a strong line and receiving crew. Dylan Skeleton will return in both the secondary and as wide receiver. “We should be a lot more competitive this year with plenty of returning players,” said Marshall. “Our goal is to get back to the Section X Class B title game, but with (defending champion) Potsdam and Gouverneur added to this year’s division, it will be a tough, but competitive three-way battle.”

In most cases, hits to the head do not result in a concussion. That is because the brain is protected by the skull; a very hard covering made of bone that works like a helmet. Hit hard enough, such as a high impact helmet to helmet hit, the brain can be shaken around inside the skull causing a concussion.

A PARENTS GUIDE TEEN CONCUSSION

Right now, what may seem like “overkill” will help ensure that your teen has the best chance to heal and rejoin the team safely. After all we all want what’s best for our kids both today and for a lifetime.

20 \\ Section X Football Preview \\ 2017

Sports should be an integral part of the S life of every teen. It teaches team building, sportsmanship and dedication. However, concussions are sometimes the unwanted result of sports participation. A concussion may also be referred to as a “head injury” or “mild traumatic brain injury”. A concussion is not a bruise to the brain; it’s an interruption of how the brain works. A concussion results when the athlete is strongly bumped or jolted causing the brain to move or twist inside the skull. Only 10% of concussions result in the athlete losing consciousness. Anyone can get a concussion, however, the fact that they are still growing makes it that much easier for children and teens to experience brain movement.

Concussions and other brain injuries are fairly common. About every 21 seconds, someone in the United States has a serious brain injury. One of the most common reasons teens get concussions is through a sports injury. Contact sports such as football, pose a higher risk of head injury, even with the use of protective headgear. According to the Institute of Medicine, high school football players are nearly twice as likely to get concussions as college counterparts or high school athletes playing other sports; as many as 20 percent of athletes who get a concussion have symptoms that linger more than two weeks. What can I as a parent do?...As parents we must be the advocate for our teen athletes. Too many times everyone is caught up in the excitement of the game and the athlete will try to “tough it out”. This can result in the athlete suffering what is called Second Impact Syndrome. This is when an athlete suffers a second concussion before the first one has had time to ....Continued on p. 44

STAYING

Across the North Country, the dreaded two-a-days, or in some case just plain old long and grueling single practices, have shaken our local athletes out of their summer induced ennui and started the process of whipping them back into playing shape. While coaches go over everything from cleats to practice drills to bus schedules, one thing that should be in the forefront of their minds is proper hydration for young athletes. Even with the dog-days of summer largely behind, the need to drink enough fluids during a workout is essential for not just the performance of the athlete, but for their health as well. According to the Mayo Clinic: “Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn’t have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. If you don’t replace lost fluids, you will get dehydrated.” While symptoms of dehydration can range from the simple to acute, high school athletes have actually died from severe dehydration during grueling practices in recent years. The debate often arises as to what type of drinks hydrate the best; water or sports drinks. Theories abound. “For most outdoor activities, good old fashioned tap water does the trick,” says an article at Web MD. “If your activity lasts an hour or more, either fruit juice diluted with water or a sports drink will provide carbohydrates for energy plus minerals to replace lost electrolytes in your sweat.”

HYDRATED H O W L A N D

By Shawn Ryan

PUMP

Somewhere in this mix falls the newest kid on the hydration block: “Fitness waters,” which are lightly flavored waters which claim to be fortified with vitamins and minerals. According to Web MD, they fall somewhere in the middle between water and Gatorade or Powerade. But the general consensus seems to be, if the flavoring of the water gets the athlete to drink more, then fitness waters are a good thing. But how much is enough? Most experts agree that pre-hydrating with about two cups of fluid an hour before the workout is essential. During the activity, four to six ounces for every 15 to 20 minutes of exercise will keep the muscles hydrated during the workout. Taking breaks during practice to drink is critical as well, rather than trying to make it all up after practice. Also, an athlete should not wait until they are thirsty before stopping for a drink. By then, dehydration has already begun, and re-hydration can take a while to take hold. On one point all the experts agree — energy drinks should not be part of the hydration mix. While athletes might think they are getting an energy boost after consuming an energy drink, the exact opposite is true. That’s because energy drinks containing large amounts of caffeine can cause dehydration, which can lead to fatigue, and increase body temperature and heart rate, which can compromise performance. Whether it’s water, sports drink or vitamin water, drinking an adequate amount is critical at this time of the year for young athletes, and it’s up to both coaches and athletes to keep the athlete safe.

The Massena Red Raiders are coming off a strong 2016 season, showing much improvement and going undefeated (6-0) in the regular season for a share of the Section X regular-season championship. The Red Raiders started the 2016 campaign earning two close victories – narrowly defeating the St. Lawrence Central Larries 26-23 in their home opener, then traveling to Potsdam to claim a 10-0 victory in a strong defensive battle. Massena then claimed two decisive victories, defeating the Canton Golden Bears 56-22 in Week 3 and the Malone Huskies 63-20 in Week 4. The Raiders returned home to face the eventual New York State Class C Finalist Ogdensburg Blue Devils in Week 5. The Raiders scored the game-winning touchdown in the closing two minutes of the contest to slip past O.F.A. 44-42. Massena then closed out the regular season defeating Tupper Lake 48-6. With what should be a very competitive league again this season, the Raiders are looking to continue their winning ways under new head coach Nick Zappia and assistant coaches Taylor Zappia, Ike Bogosian, Bob Todd and Dave Peets. Coach Zappia is counting on the strong performance of returning players Montana Pierce at quarterback and strong safety, Mike Gardner at fullback and inside linebacker, and Gage Fiasco as rusher and offensive linebacker. Said Zappia, “Our goal is just trying to get better each week. Every team in Section X will be good this year, so we have to approach each game the same way: one day at a time, one game at a time.”

There are many words that can describe the Ogdensburg Blue Devils 2016 season – exciting, memorable, nail-biting and most of all, historic! O.F.A. became the first Section X school to reach past the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) semifinals in Kingston, NY and appear in the state final at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The Blue Devils began their state playoff run by becoming the 2016 Section X Class C Champions as the second seed, defeating the top-seeded Gouverneur Wildcats 36-6 and avenging one of two regular-season losses (5-2, 10-3 overall). After capturing the Section X Class C title, the Blue Devils advanced into the New York State Class C tournament where they first traveled into the Adirondack Mountains to face the Section VII Champion Saranac Lake. Following a Blue Devils’ turnover on it’s opening possession, the Red Storm struck first when Jarret Ashton sliced through the Blue Devil line on a 21-yard run and dove into the end zone. But O.F.A. bounced back to gain control with a 27-14 halftime lead and stretched the advantage to 20 points in the second half, en route to a 41-28 win. Ogdensburg returned home where they faced Section II’s Class C Champions, the Greenwich Witches. After holding a slim 1614 lead at the half, the Witches expanded the lead to 27-16. With just seconds remaining Published by Sun Community News & Printing

in the third quarter, Avery Love scored and with a two-point conversion, trimmed the Greenwich lead to 27-24. Quarterback Joe Dalton led the Blue Devils with a timechewing 98-yard march that left just 20 seconds on the clock, culminating with a quarterback keeper to score. For the first time in school history, Ogdensburg advanced to the New York State Class C semifinals with the 30-27 victory. The Blue Devils next faced the Section I champion Burke Catholic Eagles at Deitz Stadium in Kingston NY, looking to make Section X history. After a tough back-andforth battle with the Eagles completing two back-to-back scoring drives in the second half, the Blue Devils pulled out a 38-35 victory and established O.F.A. as the first Section X football team to earn a state final berth at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. With a backdrop of fans from Ogdensburg and all over Section X in a sea of blue in the stands, the Blue Devils marched onto the big Orange stage to battle Section IV’s Newark Valley. The Blue Devils battled back from a three-score deficit and positioned themselves for a chance to win in the final six minutes, but Newark Valley controlled the football and the clock in the final minutes to hold on for the 39-34 victory. Dalton, Love and lineman Nate McCarney were selected for individual championship awards following the game.

The Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils are looking to build upon their recent success that saw the Devils win six of the last eight Section X championships in their class and four Section X-VII North Country Championships. Last season, O.F.A. became the first Section X football school to play in the NYSPHSAA Championship game at the Carrier Dome where they were narrowly defeated 39-34 by Section IV’s Newark Valley for the state title in a very exciting matchup. The Devils graduated 14 seniors, including four all-state performers. O.F.A. will be rebuilding in many areas this season. However, they do return RB Jared Barr (Sr./2016 2nd team All-State). The offense also returns key contributors from last year including offensive linemen Eddie Swan (Sr.), Jacob Lavigne (Sr.), Matt Rector (Sr.), Mason Tabolt (Jr.) and Chris Garcia (Jr.). Veterans Bradley Hillier (Sr.), Zack Bogardus (Sr.), Hunter Lira (Sr.), Chris Bromley (Sr.) and Mason Knauf (Jr.) will look to reinforce the offensive line, along with newcomers Mark Barr (So.), Erik LaMay (Jr.), Luc LaFlair, Tyler Beaulieu (Jr.) and Cody George (Jr.). The receiving corps returns Jackson Troiano (Jr.) and Zach Bidwell (Sr.). Assisting Barr in the backfield will be returning players Sean Montalvo (Sr.), Wyatt Kirby (Jr.), Jordan Fennessy (Jr.), Nake Jenkins (Jr.) and Cordell David (Sr.). Additions to the backfield include Hayden Ives (Jr.), Harry Powers (So.), Zach Kimble, (Jr.), Caleb Legault (Jr.), Connor Kelly (Jr.), and Owen Warchol (So.). The quarterbacks include Jackson Jones (So.), Stephen Morley (So.), and Michael Reed (So.). The veterans will be supported by newcomers Noah Strader (Jr.), Mecci Johnson (Jr.), Donald Baker (Jr.), Nick Snyder (Jr.) and Kyle Trombley (Jr.). The O.F.A. defense returns key contributors, including defensive linemen Matt Rector (Sr.), Chris Garcia (Jr.), Bradley Hillier (Sr.), Hunter Lira (Sr.), Jacob Lavigne (Sr.) and Chris Bromley (Sr.). The D-Line will also be fortified by newcomers Caleb Legault (Jr.), Erik LaMay (Jr.), Tyler Beaulieu (Jr.), Cody George (Jr.) and Luc LaFlair (So.). Returning linebackers include Zack Bogardus (Sr.), Sean Montalvo (Sr.), Wyatt Kirby (Jr.), Mason Tabolt (Jr.), Cordell David (Sr.), Jared Barr (Sr.) and Eddie Swan (Sr.). New linebackers include Mark Barr (So.), Zach Kimble (Jr.), Nick Snyder (Jr.) and Owen Warchol (So.). The defensive backfield returns Jordan Fennessy (Jr.), Jackson Troiano (Jr.), Nate Jenkins (Jr.), and Zach Bidwell (Sr.). They will be reinforced with newcomers Stephen Morley (So.), Hayden Ives (Jr.), Mecci Johnson (Jr.), Noah Strader (Jr.), Donald Baker (Jr.), Connor Kelly (Jr.), Harry Powers (So.), Jackson Jones (So.), Kyle Trombley (Jr.) and Michael Reed (So). Head Coach Matt Tessmer: “We are in a position where we graduated a lot of really good players. This has created a plethora of opportunities for our younger players to demonstrate that they are the right people for the job. We also have a leadership vacuum. We are excited to see who steps up to take on those responsibilities. A lot of the kids have diligently worked throughout the winter, spring and summer, in an effort to prepare themselves for this season. The guys are working hard in practice with an eye toward constant improvement throughout the season. They are a great group of kids. I know they are super excited to put on the blue and white and play some football.”

The Potsdam Sandstoners returned to their winning ways in 2016. The Sandstoners finished the regular season improving to a 4-3 record, then went on to capturing the Section X Class B Championship. Potsdam returns in 2017 with its primary goal in mind: bringing back-to-back Class B Championships. However, the road back to a sectional title in 2016 got off to a slow start. Potsdam fell to the Gouverneur Wildcats 20-6 in the opening week, then suffered a tight shutout loss to the Massena Red Raiders 10-0. In Week #3. Potsdam gained its first victory of the season, felling the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks 46-20. The Sandstoners then went on a three-game winning streak defeating the Canton Golden Bears 40-16, the Franklin Academy Huskies 32-6 and the St. Lawrence Central Larries 20-8. Potsdam closed the regular season with a lopsided loss to the Ogdensburg Blue Devils 49-6. But the Sandstoners had earned the #1 seed to host the Section X Class B Championship where they again bested the Malone Huskies 38-12 and advanced to the New York State Class B Tournament. In the opening round, Potsdam fell to the Section VII Champion Peru Indians 38-12 closing out their 2016 campaign. Looking ahead to the 2017 season, Potsdam Head Coach Jim Kirka is determined to keep building on the momentum from last season. “We have a strong group of young and dedicated underclassman that we can build on,” said Kirka. “Not graduating too many key positions allows us to have experience and depth in the backfield that we haven’t had in the past few years. Last season was a good bounce-back year after a complete rebuilding season and few players in 2015. With a bigger more experienced corps this year, I think things are looking good for us this season as well.” The Sandstoners have key position players returning to the team this season. Quarterback Cameron Talcott and running back Brandon Buffham bring experience and power to the Potsdam offense. On the line, Kiernan Matthis provides experience and strong leadership skills that will also be essential to the Sandstoners defensive success in the 2017 season.

With a strong core of returning players, St. Lawrence Central is looking to build on last year’s strong and positive development. The Larries finished last season with a 3-4 mark, gaining all of their wins in the second half of the season. The Larries had a rough start in 2016, encountering last year’s winningest teams all within the first three weeks. St. Lawrence Central lost 26-23 to open the season against unbeaten Massena. They were blanked in Week #2 by eventual New York State Class C finalist Ogdensburg 40-0, then fell to another NAC unbeaten Gouverneur 3919. The Larries used these losses as development and motivation, bouncing back with a vengeance against Tupper Lake 50-6 in Week #4, Canton 48-12 in Week #5 and Malone 39-6 in the final week of the regular season. The Larries mustered a good fight against Potsdam in Week #6, but lost a tough defensive battle 20-6. With a strong core of veteran players for 2017, Coach Bruce Truax says the Larries are blessed to have experience and previous varsity experience in virtually every position. About half of the 30-man roster is comprised of seniors, the rest are juniors with just two sophomores Cash Feeley and Ryen Cox (center) who will both provide strong up-front blocking. Senior Isaiah Lyon will again lead the team at quarterback. Fellow seniors Kaleb Parker and Keith Felix will anchor the rushing corps with speed and strength inside. Both sides of the line will feature strong and experienced blockers. Coach Truax is also pleased with work ethic of his team. “They are all very coach able, work hard and a fun group to be with. We have a bit of everything – players with experience, power running backs, speed in key positions, toughness, senior leadership and a defense which features seven of 11 players who have previous varsity experience.” Coach Truax says he has “reasonable expectations, but high hopes” for this year’s team.

After a rebuilding season in 2016, the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks are banking on a year’s growth and experience to produce stronger performances by everyone in 2017. The Jacks managed just one nonleague win in last year’s campaign, racking up six touchdowns in defeating Clinton 40-24 in Week 6. For veteran head coach Dennis Klossner, “Last year, we were a very young team, predominately sophomores. We struggled due to lack of experience and several injuries throughout the season. But we played with heart and continually got better. From last year, we lost just four seniors: Logan Savage and Jordan Young from our offensive line, Kiley Stradley on the defensive side, and Ryan Becker who played on offense, defense and special teams.” In 2017, the initial numbers will still be a bit small for the Lumberjacks. Starting with 22 players, nearly half the team (10) are returning juniors, with just six seniors and six sophomores. The Jacks will count highly on senior leadership from Ryeleigh Shore and Chad who will be called on to play offense, defense and on special teams. Juniors Kyler teRiele, Jaden LaValley, Ben Lanthier and Braydyn McCottery are also expected to be impact players on both sides of the ball. Coach Klossner says he has high hopes for his team, despite representing the smallest football school in the section. “I am very excited about our team. We have a great group of kids who are fun, enthusiastic, very coachable and work hard every day. We play in a strong section and being the only Class D team in the section, I am very proud of their efforts.” But bigger schools will also keep the Lumberjacks playing to a higher level to have success – especially preparing for the postseason. Said Klossner, “The keys to our success will be to minimize our mistakes, execution and trying to stay injury free.”
