Keep the Momentum Going: Make Next Year Even Better
Can you believe the year is almost over? Take a minute to soak it all in. Think about everything you’ve accomplished— maybe you brought in more patients, upgraded your tech, or finally tackled that backlog of projects that used to stress you out. That’s a big deal! But here’s the thing: the end of the year isn’t just about celebrating how far you’ve come. It’s about keeping that energy alive and building on it for an even better next year.
Momentum is what keeps the wheels turning. It’s the secret sauce that turns this year’s wins into next year’s breakthroughs. Sure, the holidays are a time to catch your breath, but don’t let everything come to a screeching halt. When you keep moving— even in small ways—you’ll hit the ground running when January rolls around.
As a dental practice owner, you know success doesn’t just happen. Whether it’s improving patient care, creating a more efficient workflow, or finally carving out some guilt-free personal time, staying in motion is what makes it all possible. So let’s wrap up this year strong and set the stage for an even more amazing year ahead. You’ve done the hard work—now let’s keep that momentum rolling!
What Is Momentum, and Why Should You Care?
In physics, momentum is mass times velocity—fancy talk for
saying once something is moving, it takes less effort to keep it going. The same idea applies to your dental practice. Every small win—whether it’s adding a new patient, upgrading your scheduling system, or finally tackling that supply closet—adds “mass” to your progress. Every action builds speed.
Think about Jeff Bezos and Amazon’s “flywheel effect.” Bezos kept doing small things that worked—improving customer experience, expanding offerings, and reinvesting profits. Over time, those little steps turned into a self-sustaining cycle of growth. You can do the same with your practice by focusing on the small wins that build up over time.
Momentum in the Chair and Beyond
Start Small, Think Big Here’s the deal: momentum isn’t about leaping tall buildings in a single bound. It’s about taking small, consistent steps that snowball into big wins.
Take James Clear’s *Atomic Habits*. He talks about how tiny improvements can lead to massive change over time. For your practice, this might look like improving patient intake forms, scheduling five minutes a day to follow up on outstanding claims, or creating a system for inventory that doesn’t make you want to pull your hair out.
Small steps. Big results.
Just Do It (Even When You Don’t Want To)
Nike’s “Just Do It” slogan wasn’t just about running marathons— it’s about tackling challenges head-on. Feeling overwhelmed by implementing a new management system? Just start. Feeling unsure about hiring another hygienist? Take the first step and post the job.
Mel Robbins’ *5-Second Rule* is perfect here: count down from five, and then act. The point is to eliminate hesitation and get
yourself moving. Because once you do, the rest gets easier.
The Big Momentum Killers— and How to Stop Them
We’ve all been there. You’re on a roll, things are clicking, and then—bam—momentum comes to a screeching halt. Here are the usual suspects:
Perfectionism
“Done is better than perfect,” as Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg likes to say. Yes, your crown prep has to be perfect, but your marketing emails? Not so much. If you’ve been sitting on that website redesign because it’s not “perfect,” launch it already. You can refine as you go.
Burnout
This is a biggie for dentists. It’s easy to fall into the trap of working non-stop, but trust me—if you burn out, everything grinds to a halt. Arianna Huffington, who learned this lesson the hard way, now champions prioritizing wellness. So take that weekend off, delegate to your team, or finally book that yoga class. A refreshed you is a productive you.
Building Momentum in Your Team
You’re not in this alone. Your team is a huge part of your practice’s momentum, and when they’re thriving, so are you.
Celebrate Wins—Big and Small
Dan Martell, author of *Buy Back Your Time*, is a big fan of celebrating progress. Did your team have a drama-free morning huddle? Celebrate. Did a patient leave a glowing review? Make it a moment. Positive vibes build momentum for everyone.
Create Systems That Work for Everyone
Michael Gerber’s *The E-Myth Revisited* is basically a love letter to systems. A system for reordering supplies or handling cancellations keeps things running smoothly, even when you’re not around. And the less
chaos, the easier it is to keep that momentum rolling.
Make Feedback Routine
One of the easiest ways to keep your team engaged is by making feedback a habit. Create space for regular check-ins where team members can share ideas or voice concerns. Listening and responding thoughtfully builds trust and keeps the team rowing in the same direction.
Reflect, Celebrate, and Keep Moving Forward
As this year comes to a close, take a moment to reflect on everything you’ve achieved. From welcoming new patients to fine-tuning your practice systems, each win—big or small— has brought you closer to your goals. It’s worth celebrating how far you’ve come, especially after the challenges of the past few years.
But don’t stop there. Use this time to look ahead. The momentum you’ve built this year is your foundation for an even stronger, more fulfilling year to come. Keep the wheels turning with consistent action, small improvements, and a focus on what matters most.
Remember, success in your practice—and your life—isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. So carry your accomplishments into the new year with pride and determination. You’ve got the tools, the drive, and the momentum to make the coming year your best one yet. Let’s keep moving forward!
SmileCon offered more than just continuing education this year—it provided an opportunity to discover innovative solutions that can elevate your dental practice. Among the standouts was Kettenbach Dental, a company that’s revolutionizing how dental products reach practitioners.
During the conference, I had an illuminating conversation with Chris Moore, Kettenbach’s Territory Manager - Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi about their groundbreaking approach to dental supplies—particularly their impressive Profisil ® Fluoride Varnish.
Profisil Fluoride Varnish: The Future of Fluoride Treatment
As someone who’s used various fluoride varnishes over the years, I can tell you this one is different. The secret lies in its unique formulation with Dimethicone gel, rather than the traditional rosin or tree products used by competitors.
Why does this matter? Well, my hygienists used to complain about patients leaving with what they called “sweater teeth”—that uncomfortable, tacky feeling that makes patients feel like their teeth haven’t been cleaned. Profisil eliminates this issue entirely.
The varnish is alcohol-free, which means no burning sensation during application. It’s clear, allowing for immediate post-application checks without removal. Most importantly, its unique formulation ensures 24hour fluoride uptake by keeping the tubules unblocked.
My adult patients—who were once hesitant about fluoride treatments—are now much more receptive because they can return to work without stained teeth or that sticky feeling.
Expanding Excellence: The QuickSplint® Solution
While Profisil has become a staple in my practice, Kettenbach’s innovation doesn’t stop there. Their QuickSplint® anterior bite jig has been a game-changer for my TMJ patients and those undergoing full-mouth rehabilitation.
In just 15 minutes of chair time, we can provide immediate relief for TMJ pain or protect temporary restorations. I’ve incorporated it into my treatment plans, and patients appreciate having a solution that doesn’t require waiting weeks for a lab-fabricated appliance.
Value Without Compromise: The Kettenbach Difference
For those new to Kettenbach, I always recommend starting with their Futar® bite registration material. It’s available in various formulations, allowing you to choose the perfect option for your specific needs. Once you experience the quality of Futar®, you’ll understand why so many dentists—myself included—have become loyal Kettenbach customers.
Speaking of value, Kettenbach currently offers several compelling promotions. Their Silginat® is available at $215.50 for 24 cartridges, and they have attractive package deals on Futar® (three boxes at $47 each or six boxes at $44 each). They’re also running
Looking For Smart Additions To Your Practice?
Profisil® Fluoride Varnish
a special on QuickSplint®: two boxes of 12 units at $220 each, plus a complimentary box of Futar® (a $75 value).
And let’s not forget their commitment to quality without the premium price tag. As Chris Moore explained during our interview, their German engineering and manufacturing standards are impeccable, yet they manage to price their products competitively with house brands. This is possible because they maintain a lean operation focused on efficiency rather than marketing overhead.
A Nifty Thrifty Perspective Beyond Profisil Fluoride Varnish, I gotta say that Kettenbach’s unique business model is reshaping the dental supply chain. Unlike traditional manufacturers who rely on multiple distribution layers, Kettenbach has pioneered a direct-to-dentist approach in the United States.
This streamlined distribution model doesn’t just sound good on paper—it translates to real savings of 30-40% for dental practices. Moreover, they stand behind their products with an unconditional 30-day money-back guarantee, demonstrating a level of confidence that’s rare in our industry.
For my colleagues in the Nifty Thrifty Dentists community who are always seeking the best value without compromising quality, Kettenbach represents exactly what we look for in a manufacturer. They offer premium products at reasonable prices, backed by excellent
customer service and that remarkable 30-day guarantee. Their inside sales team is readily available at 877-532-2123 to answer questions and process orders.
As someone who’s built a career on finding and sharing great deals with fellow dentists, I can confidently say that Kettenbach products—particularly their Profisil Fluoride Varnish—represent some of the best values in dentistry today. The combination of German engineering, direct distribution, and customer-first policies makes them a standout partner for any dental practice focused on providing excellent patient care while maintaining healthy margins.
Whether you’re looking to enhance your fluoride treatments, improve your temporary protection protocols, or simply find a more reliable bite registration material, I encourage you to give Kettenbach a try. With their money-back guarantee, you have nothing to lose and potentially a lot to gain. In my experience, once you try their products, you’ll wonder why you didn’t switch sooner.

NIFTY AWARDS
By Dr. Glenn Vo, Editor-in-Chief of Dental Lifestyles Magazine
Archy’s win of our 2024 Nifty Award for “Most Promising Technology” is no surprise to those who have witnessed their dedication to transforming dental practices. After all, Archy isn’t just another practice management software—their team is completely reimagining how dental practices can operate in the modern era.
As a practice owner and founder of the Nifty Thrifty Dentists community, I’ve worked closely with Archy since their early days, watching them consistently deliver exceptional value to our members. In fact, I believe in their vision so strongly that I’ve become not just a vocal advocate but an investor in their future.
What inspires such confidence?
Well, let me share their story.
Archy’s Story
Founded by Jonathan Rat—a product manager at Uber and Facebook—Archy emerged from a deeply personal place.
When Jonathan’s wife, a dentist, opened her practice in 2018, they discovered their IT company wasn’t properly backing up critical patient data—despite charging premium rates for their services. After Jonathan stepped in to rebuild their server and backup systems, his Silicon Valley-trained eye immediately
spotted a massive technological gap in the dental industry—one that represented an opportunity to revolutionize how practices operate.
The problems ran deeper than just IT issues, though. While helping at the front desk on Saturdays, Jonathan observed countless inefficiencies that his engineering mind knew could be automated. His wife was working until 11 PM most nights, juggling multiple software systems that rarely communicated well with each other. Despite the cutting-edge clinical technology, it became clear that the dental industry was at least two decades behind in practice management software.
What particularly baffled Jonathan was that in 2024, most dental practices were still anchored to server-based software while the rest of the business world had long since moved to the cloud. The irony wasn’t lost on him - while other industries were deep in discussions about artificial intelligence and machine learning, dentistry still needed to make the fundamental leap to cloud computing before it could even begin to explore AI’s possibilities.”
Thus, Archy was born—a modern solution built from real-world practice experience.
A Modern Solution for Modern Practices
Here’s a startling reality: Approximately 90% of dental practices still rely on physical
servers tucked away in closets, making them vulnerable to cyber-attacks and data breaches. In other words, the traditional server-based system that most practices use is essentially an open door for hackers. In contrast, Archy’s cloud-based platform represents a technological leap forward and a security imperative for modern practices.
Beyond security, this shift to cloud-based operations opens up new possibilities for practice efficiency. No longer tethered to physical servers, practices can finally break free from the limitations of traditional software. Team members can access patient information securely from anywhere, complete administrative tasks from home
when needed, and leverage modern automation tools that aren’t possible with legacy systems.
This technological liberation is transforming how practices operate on a fundamental level, and the results speak for themselves: Practices using Archy report saving approximately 80 hours per month and $8,000 annually by consolidating multiple software systems into one streamlined platform. As someone deeply involved in helping dentists optimize their practices, I’ve seen firsthand how Archy’s approach to automation and efficiency can transform daily operations. Tasks that once required multiple clicks and redundant data entry are streamlined. Patient communications are automated. Practice data is securely accessible from anywhere.
Putting My Money Where My Mouth Is
With more than 60,000 dental professionals in our Nifty Thrifty community, I’ve learned to quickly distinguish genuine innovators from those just riding industry trends. While Jonathan and his team’s technological prowess impressed me from day one, what truly stood out was their deep understanding that great software begins with respecting its users.
In an industry where sales representatives might automatically address the male in the room as the “doctor” (even when the female is the dentist), Archy’s team treats everyone—from
front desk staff to practice owners—as valued partners in the practice’s success. This genuine respect shapes everything they do, from product development to customer service. This human-first approach—combined with their technological expertise—made investing in Archy one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever made. And now, they’re extending this same opportunity to other dentists: after becoming a client and experiencing the platform’s capabilities firsthand, you, too, can become a stakeholder in Archy’s future. This isn’t just about buying into a software platform—it’s about joining a movement to modernize our industry while potentially benefiting from Archy’s journey toward going public.
The Right Choice for Forward-Thinking Practices
The difference between Archy and practice management software’s “big dogs” couldn’t be clearer. While industry giants have grown complacent, treating their clients as mere statistics, Archy maintains a boutique, specialized approach that puts relationships first. Unlike their competitors, who might take months or years to implement requested features—if they listen at all—Archy’s team actively collaborates with users from the start. They gather detailed feedback before building new functionalities, ensuring solutions truly address practitioners’ needs. With daily updates and a commitment to continuous improvement, the team transforms user insights into meaningful
features that solve real problems. Looking ahead, Archy is thoughtfully integrating AI capabilities through their “Archy Intelligence” initiative. Their competitors might slap an AI label on basic automation, but Archy is taking a measured approach to implementing genuine artificial intelligence solutions that can meaningfully improve practice operations.
That kind of forward-thinking approach is crucial because, let’s be frank: the dental industry is rapidly evolving, and practices that don’t adapt risk being left behind. DSOs and larger practice groups are increasingly dominating the market, armed with sophisticated technology and streamlined operations. Small to mid-sized practices clinging to outdated systems won’t just struggle to compete— they risk being swallowed up entirely.
This reality is particularly pressing as practices face increasing competition and staffing shortages. Archy’s automation capabilities can help independent practices operate more efficiently with fewer staff members, while its modern interface helps attract and retain younger team members who expect contemporary tools.
I’m All-In With Archy… Are You?
The dental industry is at a crossroads. We can either cling to outdated systems and workflows, or we can embrace the future of practice management.
With its combination of cutting-edge technology, deep industry understanding, and commitment to continuous improvement, Archy represents that future. The question isn’t whether practices will need to modernize—it’s whether you’ll be ahead of the curve or fighting to catch up.
Ready to see the difference for yourself? I encourage you to schedule a demo through their website or reach out to sales@ archy.com. While there’s no free trial period, Archy’s approach to implementation is comprehensive and supportive. You’ll be assigned a dedicated account manager who will guide you and your team through every step of the transition. There’s no disruption to your schedule—you won’t have to shut down operations—and they’ll provide thorough training and support even after you go live. The demo process includes access to a test environment where you can experience the platform’s capabilities firsthand, and their team will be there to hold your hand through the entire journey.
There is no shortage of marketing experts in the dental industry, but few have earned the trust and admiration of their peers quite like Gary Bird.
When our 60,000-member Nifty Thrifty community recently voted for their favorite dental marketing leaders, Gary and his company SMC National achieved something unprecedented: sweeping both the “Favorite Marketing Expert” and “Favorite Marketing Company” categories in our 2024 Nifty Awards.
What makes these wins particularly noteworthy isn’t just the achievement itself—it’s the philosophy behind their success.
“Give Everything Away”
At the heart of SMC National’s success lies a rather… counterintuitive business model: “Give everything away.”
This isn’t just marketing speak— it’s action. Under the leadership of their Director of Marketing, Eve, and her talented team, SMC National has developed an extensive library of free resources. They’ve systematically broken down their entire service offering into digestible pieces: SOPs, white papers, podcasts, and learning courses.
Even more remarkable is that these aren’t watered-down versions of their paid services—
By Ethan Webb, Managing Editor of Dental Lifestyles Magazine
they’re the same resources they use to train their paying clients!
Breaking Free from the Scarcity Trap
Through years of covering the dental industry, I’ve observed what Gary describes as the biggest obstacle to practice growth: a “scarcity” mindset. Too many dentists focus on what they don’t have—convinced there aren’t enough new patients in their area, qualified team members to hire, or resources to expand. Gary calls this a “fixed mindset”—and, based on our magazine’s research and interviews with countless practice owners, this way of thinking can completely paralyze a practice’s growth potential.
The alternative? An “abundance” mindset that recognizes the vast opportunities available in almost every market. “One of my core values is always to give more than you get,” Gary explained during our interview. He pointed out that patients today often call multiple practices (sometimes up to seven) before finding one that can accommodate them. The opportunity isn’t in the shortage of patients; it’s in building the proper infrastructure to serve them.
While marketing drives attention to practices, Gary emphasizes that sustainable growth requires more: a strong team
culture, a positive work environment, and efficient scheduling systems. It’s about creating an environment where staff and patients want to be.”
What’s Next for Gary & SMC National?
Looking ahead, SMC National is positioning itself at the forefront of dental marketing innovation. Their “State of the Union 2025” report was recently released around Thanksgiving and is a comprehensive resource for practices looking to leverage upcoming market opportunities—particularly the traditional January uptick in dental services.
However, perhaps the most intriguing thing is that their five-year vision centers around their sister company, Trackable. This innovative CRM system addresses a critical blind spot in dental practice management: the ability to track and analyze patient journeys before they enter your practice management system. This gap in data often means missed opportunities for growth and improvement.
“Most businesses outside dentistry use CRMs,” Gary explained. “It’s time for dental practices to have the same advantages.” This technology will allow practices to understand their marketing ROI better, track no-show rates for marketing patients, and analyze
treatment acceptance patterns—insights that could revolutionize how we approach practice growth.
Success Can be Shared
SMC National’s transparent approach is refreshing in an industry where marketing companies often guard their “secret sauce” jealously. They’ve proven that success doesn’t come from hoarding knowledge but from freely sharing it and helping others succeed.
Gary’s message is clear for those struggling with practice growth: the opportunities are there. Whether in a competitive urban market or a seemingly saturated suburban area, success is possible with the right mindset and systems in place. Sometimes, the barrier isn’t marketing at all—it might be internal processes, team culture, or operational efficiency.
As we look to the future of dental practice marketing, it seems that success will come to those who embrace an abundance mindset and adapt to changing patient needs. Gary Bird and SMC National are walking their talk—they’re living out their principles, sharing them, and helping practices across the country achieve their growth potential.
By Dr. Glenn Vo, Editor-in-Chief of Dental Lifestyles Magazine
I still remember sitting across from Dr. Anissa Holmes as one of her first coaching clients, unaware that I was witnessing the beginning of a movement in dental practice management.
Now, watching her accept her second consecutive “Favorite Dental Coach” Nifty Award, I’m reminded of how one person’s dedication to helping others can create ripples of transformation throughout an entire industry.
Finding Purpose in Others’ Success
Anissa’s path to dental coaching began unexpectedly. After a decade of running her practice, she discovered the transformative power of business mentorship when her business banker invited her to a conference. Through coaching and strategic implementation, she built what most dentists only dream of: A practice with robust systems and management processes that could thrive even while she took month-long summer breaks with her children.
“My first coach, Marcia, asked me, ‘What’s your legacy going to be?’” Anissa recalled. As a client of ActionCOACH then, she had already been recognized as a finalist for Global Female Entrepreneur of the Year. When faced with that question about legacy, her answer was clear: “I’ll write a book.”
This led to her book—Delivering WOW: How Dentists Can Build a Fascinating Brand and Achieve More While Working Less—which documented her systematic approach to achieving more freedom and time. Her subsequent podcast expanded her reach, attracting dentists nationwide who were eager to learn her methods.
A Data-Driven Approach to Practice Transformation
What sets Dr. Anissa apart is her comprehensive, metrics-focused methodology. Her coaching program combines monthly oneon-one sessions with extensive team training, focusing on key performance indicators through scorecards and whiteboard tracking systems.
“It’s not just about growing revenue,” Anissa explained. “It’s about creating freedom through mastery of systems and frameworks.” Her program tracks everything from accounts receivable to unscheduled patients, ensuring every opportunity for growth is noticed and capitalized upon.
Beyond Traditional Coaching
Anissa’s program is unique in how it addresses the whole practice ecosystem. Each month, she provides one-on-one strategic guidance to doctors while developing every team member’s potential—from enhancing verbal skills and case acceptance
to providing role-specific coaching for schedulers, insurance coordinators, hygienists, and assistants.
Understanding that practice owners need support beyond the in-office team and clinical excellence, Anissa also dedicates a coach to training virtual assistants to manage scorecards, insurance verification, and billing processes. Meanwhile, practice managers receive specialized training to evolve into effective COOs, creating a complete system where every team member contributes to the practice’s success.
The results speak for themselves. Clients regularly see 40-50% growth within their first year, with some achieving remarkable milestones like $1.5 million in additional profits or scaling from struggling practices to $200,000 monthly production.
The Heart of Coaching Success
“The only difference between you and someone else who has what you want is that they know something you don’t know,” Anissa shared, quoting advice from her father. “When you learn what they learn, you can have what they have.”
This philosophy particularly resonates with mid-career dentists facing retirement concerns.
Many arrive at her doorstep in their forties and fifties, making under $1 million annually, with practices valued at only $500,000-$600,000—insufficient for a comfortable retirement. Through her guidance, small tweaks can add $1-2 million to a practice’s sale value. While many of her clients prioritize increasing profits, others are drawn to her expertise for the opportunity to maintain their income while significantly reducing or even eliminating their clinical days, allowing them to achieve a better worklife balance.
Looking Forward
“The quicker you implement these things, the longer you can enjoy them,” Anissa emphasized. “What I’m most proud of is building a legacy of empowered dental professionals who know how to run their businesses so they can better serve their patients, support their teams, and secure their futures.”
For dentists feeling stuck or uncertain about their practice’s future, Anissa offered this advice: “First, get clarity on what you want. Then, ask yourself why you don’t have it yet. Finally, find the ‘who’—the mentor who can provide the knowledge and accountability to help you achieve it.”
When our 60,000-strong Nifty Thrifty Dentists community voted for their “Most Valuable Resource” of the year, one name rose above the rest: Bri Richardson. And it’s no wonder—her fifteen-year journey from chairside dental assistant to practice management guru has inspired countless dental professionals.
Beginning her career as a dental assistant in New York in 2009, Bri quickly advanced to become an insurance and treatment coordinator at an airway-focused dental office. Bri’s transition to entrepreneurship began in 2018 when she started working remotely with practices to streamline their insurance management, boost case acceptance, and improve collections.
As an Independent Dental Insurance Specialist, Bri built a reputation working with elite practices nationwide—providing comprehensive insurance management, emergency support through Dental Insurance SOS, and transformative in-office training.
Fast-forward to today, and Bri is not only a distinguished Dental Insurance Specialist but also a Speaker and Owner of Elevate My Practice and Dental Insurance SOS.
By Ethan Webb, Managing Editor of Dental Lifestyles Magazine
How Can Bri “Elevate” Your Practice?
What started as a boutique billing company has evolved into a comprehensive training enterprise—but it wasn’t planned. Elevate My Practice emerged organically from clients requesting in-house team training; Bri discovered a natural talent for training and a genuine passion for empowering dental practices to take control of their financial destiny, and the rest is history.
Now, as the founder of Elevate My Practice, Bri is revolutionizing dental practices’ financial management. Her specialty is transforming practices’ collection protocols and helping teams master the art of securing full payments within 30 days from insurance companies and patients. This skill set has become increasingly crucial in today’s dental landscape, where millions of dollars flow through practices annually.
Perhaps most heartwarming is how Elevate My Practice has become a true family enterprise. What began with Bri’s sister as an early team member has now grown to include her husband, who recently joined the business full-time.

Accessible: A New Approach to CE
What sets Bri apart in our community isn’t just her expertise—
it’s her generosity of spirit. Her willingness to share knowledge freely, without expectation of return, has earned her the respect and gratitude of countless dental professionals.
“If I’m sitting down with you, I don’t care who you are,” she told me. “If you need help, and I know how to help you, I’m not going to give you a bill.” Needless to say, folks like Bri embody the collaborative spirit that makes our Nifty Thrifty community so special.
Recently, Bri launched “Money Matters: Dental Edition”—a virtual training series offering a structured, step-by-step approach to financial management. This innovative program allows practices to send team members for training without the expense of on-site consultation, making expert guidance more accessible than ever.
Additionally, Bri has begun hosting local CE events, further expanding her reach and impact in the dental community. These initiatives reflect her understanding that practices have varying needs and resources, and success should be accessible to all.
Congratulations, Bri!
As Managing Editor of Dental Lifestyles Magazine and having followed Bri’s contributions to our publication and community, I can confidently say that her recognition as “Most Valuable Resource” is well-deserved.
Through her work, Bri continues demonstrating that success in dental practice management isn’t only a matter of implementing systems—it’s also about building relationships, sharing knowledge, and creating sustainable solutions that benefit the dental community.
Talk about hitting a trifecta!
In what might be the most impressive showing at the Nifty Awards to date, Kevin Tallman and Mango Voice just swept three major categories: Dental Executive of the Year, Best Phone Service, and—the cherry on top—Favorite Nifty Thrifty Vendor.
As someone who’s watched their journey from the start, I can tell you this triple crown couldn’t have gone to more deserving winners.
From Startup to Industry Sensation
Let me paint you a picture of just how far Kevin and Mango Voice have come. When they first dipped their toes into the dental industry in 2017, they were serving just over 300 practices. Fast forward to Kevin taking the helm as CEO in late 2019, and boom—they’ve exploded to more than 8,000 practices across the U.S. and Canada. That’s not just growth; that’s a revolution in dental communication.
These awards celebrate something remarkable: Kevin has managed to scale Mango Voice while keeping that personal touch that made them famous in the first place. In an age where most CEOs are hidden behind layers of corporate
By Dr. Glenn Vo, Editor-in-Chief of Dental Lifestyles Magazine
bureaucracy, Kevin’s still out there in the trenches, personally responding to customer messages and making sure every practice gets the attention they deserve.
Their dedication to dentistry throughout this massive expansion tells a powerful story. While some companies try to be everything to everyone, Mango Voice has doubled down on serving dental practices, with an impressive 90% of their customer base being dental offices. This specialized focus has allowed them to develop features and solutions that generic phone providers simply can’t match.
Why Everyone’s Doing the “Mango Tango” Mango Voice has revolutionized what a phone company can be. They’ve created the Swiss Army
knife of dental practice communication, giving practices detailed analytics about their call handling, helping them convert more new patients, and integrating with various practice management systems to create a seamless communication ecosystem.
Here’s a mind-blowing stat: While most practices out there are missing up to 30% of their incoming calls (yikes!), Mango Voice users are crushing it with answer rates that would make any practice manager jump for joy. That’s exactly why they snagged that Best Phone Service award.
Their onboarding process stands as another testament to their excellence. In just 20 business days, they can get a practice up and running with their new
system—and we’re talking about a success rate that would make most tech companies jealous. Less than 1% of onboardings encounter any significant issues. In an industry where time literally equals money, this kind of efficiency is pure gold.
Setting the Standard for Industry Excellence
Mango Voice excels by combining powerful technology with practical applications. Their comprehensive system helps practices track and improve their communication metrics— from new patient call conversion rates to peak call times for specific dental services. They pair this sophisticated technology with hands-on support, helping practices transform data into actionable improvements.
I’ve watched many companies enter the dental industry with big promises. Mango Voice, however, stands apart by consistently delivering on theirs. Understanding that 80% of new patients schedule their first appointment by phone, they know that every incoming call presents a business opportunity. That’s why they’ve transformed basic phone systems into powerful practice growth tools while maintaining personalized service that makes each client feel valued.
The numbers paint a clear picture of their impact. When practices switch to Mango Voice, they typically see a dramatic improvement in their call metrics within the first month. More answered calls mean more appointments and more appointments mean more revenue. But beyond the numbers, they’re helping practices create better patient experiences from the very first phone call.
Leading with Heart in a Tech
World
Kevin’s Dental Executive of the Year award reflects his remarkable leadership philosophy: “If you take care of your people and your customers, amazing things will happen.” The results speak volumes—about 30% of their new business comes straight from happy customers spreading the word.
His leadership style breaks the traditional mold. He sees himself as part of the team, not above it. He uses this great analogy of a “wheel rolling,” where every team member—including himself—is a crucial cog. This approach has created a company culture where everyone is fully invested in delivering an exceptional customer experience.
The Favorite Nifty Thrifty Vendor award carries special weight because it comes straight from our community. Our dentists and practice owners have spoken clearly: Mango Voice has earned their trust through consistent excellence and reliability.
Shaping the Future of Dental Communication
What excites me most about Mango Voice’s triple win is what it means for the future of our industry. Kevin and his team aren’t resting on their laurels. They’re already working on next-generation features that will further revolutionize how dental practices communicate with their patients.
Their development roadmap includes advanced AI-powered analytics that will help practices identify patterns in patient communication they might otherwise miss. They’re also exploring new ways to integrate with emerging dental technologies, ensuring their system remains
at the cutting edge of practice management.
But true to form, they’re approaching these innovations with their characteristic focus on practical applications. Every new feature must pass their ultimate test: Will this help dental practices serve their patients better?
A Community Success Story
The Mango Voice story resonates so strongly in our community because it’s an example of what happens when you truly understand and serve your market.
They’re not just a vendor but a vital part of the dental community. You’ll find Kevin and his team at industry events,
hosting educational webinars, and actively participating in online forums where they share insights that benefit all practices—not just their customers.
This deep involvement in the dental community has helped them build something rare in the business world: genuine trust. They’ve shown time and again that they’re not just here to make a sale—they’re here to help practices succeed. This commitment to community and excellence is exactly what we celebrate with the Nifty Awards.
Congratulations on your well-deserved triple win. Keep showing us how business should be done in the dental industry!
L et me tell you about someone who has been making waves in the dental industry this year. Wade Myers—the mastermind behind GotaDental—just snagged our “Best Dental Repair Tech” title at this year’s Nifty Awards.
Wade M
By Dr. Glenn Vo, Editor-in-Chief of Dental Lifestyles
And, truth is, anyone who knows Wade isn’t surprised one bit. This guy has been revolutionizing how dental practices get their hands on quality equipment without breaking the bank.
From Small-Town Start to Industry Game-Changer
I’ve had the pleasure of watching Wade’s journey since he kicked off GotaDental back in 2018, and what a ride it’s been. He started in Cabot, Arkansas, fixing up old film processors, and now he’s running a nationwide operation that’s become the go-to spot for dental equipment solutions. Talk about a success story!
What makes Wade a cut above the rest isn’t just his technical know-how—though, trust me, he’s got plenty of that. It’s how he approaches every single piece of equipment that comes through his door. This isn’t your typical “patch it up and ship it out” operation. Wade and his team practically give these machines a spa treatment—from thorough inspections to complete overhauls. By the time they’re done, that equipment
looks and runs like it just rolled off the assembly line.
The Guy Who Actually Goes the Extra Mile
You know how some businesses throw around the phrase “going the extra mile” like it’s just another marketing buzzword? Well, Wade takes it literally.
While most companies are content to let shipping companies handle their deliveries, Wade’s often the one showing up at dental practices across the country, equipment in tow. He’ll even stick around to make sure you know exactly how to use what you’ve bought. Now that’s what I call service!
His expertise with big names like Air Techniques, Adec, Belmont, and Midmark is impressive, sure. But what really sets him apart is how he’s managed to expand GotaDental without losing that personal touch. Whether you’re buying new equipment, need repairs, or just want some advice, Wade’s still the same approachable, helpful guy he’s always been.
Making Quality Care More Accessible for Everyone
Wade isn’t just running a business—he’s on a mission to make advanced dental technology accessible to practices of all sizes. Think about it. When practices can afford better equipment,
more patients get better care. It’s that simple.
The award committee couldn’t stop talking about his knack for creative problem-solving. Need custom modifications for your unique practice setup? Wade’s got you covered. Looking for flexible financing options? He’ll figure something out.
Even with GotaDental growing bigger every day—adding warehouses and bringing on
more skilled techs—Wade hasn’t lost sight of what matters. He’s still the same guy who’ll answer your call at odd hours or drive through the night to deliver a crucial piece of equipment.
So here’s to you, Wade! Your win is well-deserved, and I can’t wait to see what you do next. Keep raising the bar, my friend—the dental community is better because of you.
DR. KATHRYN ALDERMAN: Championing Compassionate
AI and Winning the 2024 Nifty “Member of the Year” Award
By Dr. Glenn Vo, Editor-in-Chief of Dental Lifestyles Magazine
As the founder of Nifty Thrifty Dentists—a thriving community of over 60,000 dental professionals—I have the privilege of meeting industry innovators who redefine what’s possible in dentistry. While our community is well-known for helping practices save money, it’s also a hub for celebrating forward-thinking leaders. Among these trailblazers, Dr. Kathryn Alderman stands out as a true force of change in our profession.
With an impressive career spanning over 20 years, Kathryn combines clinical expertise, business acumen, and technological innovation like no one else. Her dedication to transforming dentistry with actionable solutions has earned her the title of 2024 Nifty “Member of the Year”. This honor reflects her contributions to advancing AI integration in dental practices, her leadership within the Nifty Thrifty community, and her unwavering focus on improving patient care.
From Solo Dentist to AI Pioneer Kathryn’s story begins like many in dentistry: a solo practitioner striving to provide exceptional care while building her practice. However, her vision extended far beyond her first office. Over two decades, Kathryn scaled her operations into a network of seven thriving locations. Along the way, she earned an MBA and completed specialized training in AI product design at MIT, equipping her with the skills to bridge traditional dentistry with cutting-edge technology.
As the founder of Intelligent Care Alliance and creator of Yekaterin, a generative AI telehealth platform, Kathryn has supported over 600 dental professionals in scaling their practices, achieving operational excellence, and integrating AI thoughtfully.
Dr. Khryn Alderman
“I wish I had AI when I was growing my practices,” Kathryn says. “It would have saved so much time and reduced stress. Now, I use it to help other dental professionals solve the challenges I once faced.”
The Role of AI in Modern Dentistry
Kathryn’s work showcases how AI is not a futuristic concept but a powerful tool available to dental practices today. Her contributions to the Intelligent Care Alliance have helped dentists understand how AI can be used to optimize processes, improve team efficiency, and enhance patient care.
1. AI for Data Analysis & Strategic Planning
AI is changing the game for dental practices by making data analysis and strategic planning faster, easier, and more effective. It takes complex metrics—like revenue trends, patient behaviors, and workflow bottlenecks—and turns them into clear, actionable strategies in real time. AI analyzes practice metrics with speed and precision, offering actionable insights to improve profitability and streamline operations. “AI can turn complex data into
>
clear strategies in minutes,” Kathryn explains. “What once took consultants days to analyze can now be done in real time.” AI helps you plan ahead, track KPIs effortlessly, and make smarter decisions without the guesswork.
2. AI for Team Training & Development
Onboarding and training staff have been transformed by AI. With the ability to create customized training materials tailored to each practice’s needs, AI ensures consistency while reducing the burden on senior team members. By taking on much of the training process, AI reduces the workload for senior staff, freeing them up to focus on patient care. It can also track progress, provide real-time feedback, and help team members stay sharp with ongoing learning opportunities. As Kathryn says, “AI simplifies the process, ensuring everyone is trained to the highest standard.” Whether you’re onboarding a new hire or upskilling your team, AI makes it easier to build confident, capable teams that deliver great care.
4. AI for Case Presentation and Acceptance
AI is revolutionizing case presentation and acceptance in dental practices by making the process faster, clearer, and more personalized. It doesn’t just help dentists educate patients about issues like decay or gum disease—it also creates customized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs. These plans are presented in simple, easy-to-understand language, breaking down procedures, timelines, and costs in a way that builds trust and confidence. AI can help patients fully understand their condition and the value of the proposed treatments. By streamlining this process, AI not only saves time but also helps patients feel informed and empowered to make decisions.
With AI, dental practices can summarize and present complex cases in a simple layout in a way that increases acceptance rates and improves patient trust, leading to higher case acceptance.
5. AI for Marketing
AI streamlines marketing, making it easier and faster to create professional, engaging content across all platforms.
• Logo and Branding: AI tools design unique, professional logos and ensure brand consistency across materials.
• Content Creation: AI generates blog posts, social media captions, and SEO-friendly content tailored to your audience.
• Video Production: AI automates editing, adds captions, and converts text into dynamic videos for promotions or education.
• Website Development: AI builds responsive, SEO-optimized websites with personalized user experiences.
• Ad Campaigns: AI targets ads, tracks performance, and refines strategies to maximize ROI.
• Analytics: AI provides real-time insights and recommendations to improve your campaigns.
AI takes the guesswork out of marketing, helping you reach and engage your audience efficiently.
6. AI for Communication
AI streamlines communication from ensuring patins get their questions answered to crafting professional, on-brand responses in seconds, ensuring consistency and efficiency in handling patient inquiries, follow-ups, and more. Dr. Kathryn Alderman shares how an office manager once spent nine hours drafting a response to a patient complaint, while AI accomplished the task in just 30 seconds—delivering the same professionalism and brand tone.
At the heart of this transformation is Yekaterin, Kathryn’s flagship AI platform designed to revolutionize patient communication:
Empathetic Support: Available 24/7 to answer questions and provide guidance.
Multilingual Capabilities: Breaking language barriers to offer inclusive care.
Custom Branding: Ensuring all interactions reflect the practice’s unique voice.
Patient Engagement: Boosting retention and satisfaction while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
“Yekaterin isn’t just a tool,” Kathryn explains. “It’s an extension of the dental team, helping practices connect with patients and freeing staff to focus on more meaningful tasks.”
By integrating Yekaterin, dental practices can maintain exceptional communication standards while improving efficiency and patient satisfaction.
Balancing Technology with the Human Touch
While Kathryn is a champion of AI, she firmly believes in maintaining the human element of dentistry. “We’re in the people business,” she says. “AI is here to support us, not replace us. The goal is to reduce headaches, not headcount.”
Kathryn encourages practices to view AI as an assistant that amplifies human potential. By automating routine tasks, AI allows team members to focus on building relationships, exercising judgment, and delivering compassionate care.
A Measured Approach to AI Implementation
Kathryn advises practices to start small and implement AI gradually. “It’s tempting to dive in, but it’s essential to take one step at a time,” she says. “For example, use AI for spell-checking or crafting professional communication—it’s an easy way to get started without overwhelming your team.”
Clear communication about AI’s role as a support tool—not a replacement—is critical. Kathryn recommends involving the team in the implementation process and using feedback to refine its use.
The Future of AI: Personal-
ization
in Dentistry
Looking ahead, Kathryn predicts AI will drive personalization in every aspect of dentistry, from treatment plans to patient experiences. “Everything is moving toward personalized care,” she says. “AI will help us tailor interactions and treatments to meet individual needs, improving outcomes and satisfaction.” Kathryn envisions a world
where AI enhances accessibility, making personalized care available to all.
Building Super-Teams with AI
Kathryn’s leadership philosophy centers on creating environments where technology and human expertise thrive together. “Managing multiple practices is challenging,” she acknowledges. “But with the right support systems, both human and AI, practices can achieve remarkable results.”
By solving clinical, administrative, and marketing challenges quickly, AI empowers practices to focus on their mission: providing exceptional care. “AI helps teams work smarter, not harder,” Kathryn says.
Dr. Kathryn Alderman’s Vision for Dentistry
Kathryn’s upcoming book, “AI Advantage: Revolutionizing Healthcare in the Industry,” is a practical guide for practices ready to embrace AI. It emphasizes current applications and offers strategies for integrating AI without disrupting workflows.
“The book addresses the challenges we face in dentistry and how AI can help solve them,” Kathryn explains. “It’s about creating super-teams where humans and AI collaborate
effectively to deliver outstanding care.”
Through the Intelligent Care Alliance, Kathryn offers customized strategies for AI integration, tailored training, and ongoing support to ensure long-term success.
A Leader Who Inspires Kathryn’s journey—from solo practitioner to multi-practice owner to AI pioneer—is a testament to her resilience and innovation. Her approach proves that technology can harmonize with human expertise to improve patient care and team satisfaction.
As a female entrepreneur, Kathryn’s story is an inspiration for others navigating the challenges of leadership in healthcare. She reminds us that the future of dentistry isn’t about choosing between human touch and technology—it’s about combining them to create something extraordinary.

Dental Pitch Brokerage
By Dr. Glenn Vo, Editor-in-Chief of Dental Lifestyles Magazine
In an era where influence is often measured by followers and likes, folks like Elijah Desmond remind us that true influence comes from lifting others up. As Elijah puts it, “Iron sharpens iron,” and his success proves that when we help others rise, we all benefit.
This philosophy has earned Elijah not one, but two prestigious honors at this year’s Nifty Awards: “Industry Influencer of the Year” and “Favorite Dental Broker” for his company, Dental Pitch Brokerage.
When I caught up with Elijah to discuss these achievements, his response was characteristically humble. “I’m so focused on helping everybody else that I don’t really think about myself in that light,” he shared. “When somebody calls me an influencer, I tell them I’m not—I just connect and create influencers.”
From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader
Elijah’s fearless approach to business stems from early life lessons. After losing his athletic career at 15, Elijah learned to pivot and persist. From riding the bus and knocking door-todoor in Hawaii while building his first staffing agency to now running multiple successful ventures, he’s maintained his core values: kindness, gratitude, and helping others.
“Don’t wait until tomorrow— start today,” he advises. “The more you put yourself out there, the more your tolerance for risk grows. You’ll learn to make smarter decisions while becoming fearless in the process.”
Since 2016, when he launched “Dentistry’s Got Talent,” he’s been working to diversify voices in our industry. “Ten years ago, I looked at all these stages in dentistry where people are speaking and giving CE, and I saw the same people there over and over,” he explained. “Like, move over, give somebody an opportunity!”
Since his early day of foraying into entrepreneurship, much of Elijah’s success comes from what he calls his “remix” philosophy: taking proven concepts from outside dentistry and adapting them for our industry. Whether it’s chartering private jets for masterminds or creating dental entertainment events, he’s shown that innovation often means looking beyond traditional industry boundaries for inspiration.
Breaking the Mold with Authenticity Elijah’s innovative “remix” philosophy reaches its pinnacle in Dental Pitch Brokerage, where he and co-founder Matt Ornstein have disrupted traditional practice transitions with their
“Shark Tank”-style format. With over 400 sellers in their pipeline and 55+ buyers, they’ve created an environment where practice owners can present to multiple qualified buyers in a single day.
But Elijah isn’t your typical broker—he’s also known as the “celebrity dental DJ,” performing in nine countries and 30 states. “A lot of people think of a dental broker and think, ‘Oh, you got to have this three-piece suit on and no tattoos, definitely no hat,’” he says. “I don’t believe in that. You don’t have to fit the mold.”
Sellers enter with walk-on music, present to a room of attentive buyers, and participate in up to ten one-on-one interviews—all in a confidential setting. It’s this combination of professionalism and personality that’s quickly made them a favorite in our industry.
On that note, for readers interested in selling their practice, Elijah would urge you to do so before retirement: “It is not ideal for you to sell your practice when you’re ready to retire,” he emphasizes. “It is ideal for you to sell your practice three to five years prior to being done. You’re going to get substantially more money.”
What’s next for Elijah and Dental Pitch Brokerage?
Looking ahead, Dental Pitch Brokerage has five major events planned for 2024, including stops at Women in DSO in Las Vegas, the Florida Dental Association, and the Dykema DSO Conference in Denver.
True to Elijah’s “remix” philosophy, they’ve also launched the Dental Store platform—a Zillow-inspired marketplace for dental practices. The platform eliminates the need for a broker, charging only a small fee that’s less than half the cost of traditional brokerage services, making practice transitions more accessible for smaller practices.
As the founder of Nifty Thrifty Dentists, I’ve seen many success stories in our industry. But Elijah’s impact stands out because it’s not just about personal achievement—it’s about creating opportunities for others to succeed. His double win at this year’s Nifty Awards reflects not just his business acumen, but his commitment to transforming our industry through collaboration and authenticity.
NIFTY AWARDS WINNERS RESPONSE
I am deeply honored to be selected as the Nifty Thrifty Outsourced Insurance Services Provider Winner—what an incredible milestone for a first-timer!
To my team: You are the reason we excel at what we do. Without your unwavering support and dedication, none of this would be possible. You believe in my vision and stand with me through it all, and for that, I am endlessly grateful.
To my clients: Thank you for placing your trust in us. Your confidence in our work and your partnership mean the world to me.
To my colleagues and partners: Your collaboration and support are invaluable. It’s truly inspiring to work alongside professionals who share the same goals and vision. Together, we are making a meaningful impact.
Noticing a theme here?
All of these elements come together to form a larger community of dental professionals working to improve provider reimbursements, production, collections, and profits. As the industry evolves, it’s clear that collaboration is key to ensuring providers can focus on what truly matters—patient care. I am honored to contribute to this ecosystem and proud to stand alongside others who share this mission.
Lastly, a special thank you to Dr. Glenn Vo and the Nifty Thrifty team for creating a platform that fosters candid discussions, knowledge sharing, and, of course, those amazing Nifty Thrifty Deals! Your efforts empower our community and elevate us all.
Thank you once again to everyone who has supported me on this journey. I look forward to continuing to do my part to help dental offices lessen the burden of revenue cycle management and thrive in this evolving landscape.
This is a great honor! Thank you Dr. Vo for moving the profession forward in a way which few have accomplished. Thank you to my many mentors. I have stood on the shoulders of many giants and leaders in our industry. I am humbled by the nomination and thrilled with the win. Thank you Dr. Kerstein for taking my career in a direction I hadn't planned on. The gratitude from patients feeling better is a reward I had not anticipated. Occlusion is the foundation of all dentistry, it is a great thing it is taking the spotlight under digital biometric measurement, which is what I teach.
I am truly honored to receive these Nifty Awards and I would like to thank EVERYONE in the wonderful industry of Dentistry with special thanks to Glenn Vo, Elijah Desmond (my business partner at Dental Pitch Brokerage firm), Pat Bauer (CEO of Heartland for all your kindness & advice), and Brian Colao & Eric White (my legal advisors at Dykema). I am truly honored and grateful.
I am absolutely overjoyed to be nominated for this award! A heartfelt thank you to my amazing husband, Zach, for his constant love, support, and belief in me. I am also incredibly grateful to my business coach, Mark LeBlanc, for his invaluable insights and guidance that have helped me grow both personally and professionally. A special thank you to Dr. Vo for fostering a positive community that is such a light in our dental world. I’m incredibly fortunate to have such a strong network of friends and supporters who have been there for me every step of the way. Above all, I owe every good thing to God’s guidance and the strength He provides me to face every step with confidence and grace.
I am so honored and grateful to be chosen to receive this award. Especially knowing it was voted on by our peers. It means so much. Thank you to all that voted and to Glenn and the team for putting this together.
As someone who grew up with dyslexia, barely graduated high school and doesn't have a lot of "traditional" skills, I am grateful every day to be able to do what I do.
I love the speaking profession and what we as speakers get to do in supporting and growing the profession. I want to honor anyone who overcomes their fears of the stage or public speaking and stands in front of people to bravely share a message they are passionate about.
The profession and the world needs your unique, powerful and passionate voice. After creating his David statue, Michael Angelo said he did not create the David, he just "removed everything that is not David" from the stone around him. If there is one thing I tell my speaking clients over and over again, it's that you have a Unique Stage Presence. You don't have to create it, because it's already there, you simply have to uncover it, like Michael Angelo did. Go out and share your masterpiece with the world.
Thank you again for this honor.
I am completely honored! To be chosen, amongst all the people that were nominated and mentioned in this category and then to be awarded the top, that is truly an amazing honor. I am so grateful to have so many amazing clients and colleagues over the years that have allowed me to grow and become the person I am today. Thank you to everyone who voted, and everyone who has stood beside me and supported me. I have had so many amazing mentors through the years and for each and everyone of you, I am completely grateful!
I’m deeply honored to be voted a winner for the Nifty Awards as a Favorite Dental Consultant. It’s incredibly rewarding to know my work resonates with so many. I want to thank my clients, industry friends and colleagues, and supporters for their trust and encouragement. A special thanks to those who voted—this recognition means the world to me!
the dental industry. Glenn’s vision and leadership have built a community where professionals can come together to learn, share, and elevate the entire industry.
A huge thank you goes to Eve, SMC’s phenomenal Director of Marketing. Her leadership and creative vision are the driving forces behind the exceptional content we provide to the dental community. Eve and her incredible team pour their talent and dedication into crafting resources that are not only valuable but also freely given to help dentists thrive. They make it possible for us to contribute in such a meaningful way. Thank you Eve, Dino, April, Ian, Kycie, Maria & Richard.
Of course, I wouldn’t be here without the entire SMC team and our amazing clients. The team’s hard work, innovation, and commitment form the foundation of everything we accomplish in the dental marketing growth space. And to our clients—you are the heartbeat of what we do. Your trust and collaboration are what push us to reach higher and deliver more every single day.
This recognition is not just a personal milestone; it’s a reflection of the collective effort of so many remarkable people. I am deeply grateful and even more motivated to continue serving this incredible community. Thank you for this honor—it’s a reminder of why I love what I do!
I am deeply honored to be recognized as Executive of the Year, and for Mango Voice to be voted Best Phone Service in the Nifty Thrifty Awards. These awards reflect the incredible work and dedication of the amazing team we’ve built at Mango. These awards remind me of the movie “The Boys in the Boat.” There was a moment in the movie where the coach was talking to Joe who recently had lost his seat. He says, ""I know it isn't easy to trust every other person on that boat as much as you trust yourself. It's not about you, as good as you are. It's not about you, Joe, or me, or anybody else. It's about the boat."" This simple yet powerful message resonates far beyond the realm of sports. Whether it's in a team, a business, or any collaborative endeavor, the essence of true success lies in prioritizing the collective goal over individual gains. The greatest teams embrace the mindset of doing what's best for the team, the project, or the business. Individuality and politics, while part of human nature, can often hinder progress and dilute the strength of a group's effort. They are the quickest routes to stalling growth and failing to retain top talent. I want to thank all the team members at Mango who have embraced the “boat” culture and work daily to deliver an industry leading experience.
A heartfelt thank you to Glenn Vo for creating this amazing community. Your vision and dedication have brought together so many like-minded professionals, and you have been instrumental in helping Mango grow. Thank you again for this honor, and here’s to continuing to grow and succeed together!
We are honored that the people we support have recognized us with this award, and we want to thank everyone who voted for us.
We are equally grateful to be named the brokerage firm of the year by our peers, and we extend our heartfelt appreciation to our team, our board of advisors, and the vibrant community—including hundreds of sellers and over 55 buyers—who believe in our out-of-the-box brokerage firm.
Winning this award is an incredible honor and a tribute to the amazing dental rockstars I’ve had the privilege to support. Team training is my passion, and I’m so grateful to work with such dedicated and talented professionals. Thank you to all my dental rockstars—you are the heart of this industry! I’m excited to keep helping teams embrace the future, including innovations like AI, to continue rocking dentistry together!
Words cannot describe how great I feel about this award. Knowing that I have had a positive impact on this community and our PROFESSION drives me to continue to improve at everything I’ve been doing in Dentistry and in life... I am so grateful to my friend Dr. Glenn Vo for embracing my message, to my mentors, coaches, and teachers, the great Dr. Sandy Parrott, Mary Osborne, Joan Unterschuetz, Lee Brady, Margy Schaller, Henry De Vries, my Guardian Angel, Marilee Sears, the great Mark LeBlanc. , and everyone in the Nifty Community. This honor means more than anyone can imagine.
It is a true humbling honor to be selected as the top sales and development person in Dental.
I want to thank and share appreciation Dr. Glenn Vo and his illustrious team for our friendship, partnership and to all the members of the Nifty Thrifty Family for working with us as their dental distributor. Looking to eclipse the 8 digit number soon. Looking forward to a repeat of this award next year :)

IN DENTISTRY RISING STARS
By Ethan Webb, Managing Editor of Dental Lifestyles Magazine
The 2024 Nifty Awards celebrated excellence across the dental industry, highlighting practitioners and professionals who are revolutionizing patient care, practice management, industry innovation, and more. While this year's winners represented the pinnacle of achievement in their respective categories, they weren't the only ones making waves in dentistry.
Among the nominees and emerging leaders, six exceptional professionals caught our attention—individuals whose ingenious ideas and dedication to advancement mark them as the ones to watch in the coming years. These “rising stars” exemplify the spirit of innovation that drives dentistry forward. From groundbreaking marketing strategies to revolutionary practice management, from equipment solutions to wellness advocacy, these professionals are reshaping the landscape of oral healthcare.
Their stories inspire and illuminate the many ways dedicated individuals can contribute to advancing the field. As we spotlight these rising stars, we celebrate their achievements and their potential to transform the future of dentistry.
Dr. Devinn Geeson’s journey in dentistry began with a profound personal connection—watching her mother battle diabetes and periodontal disease during her childhood. By sixth grade, she had already discovered her calling, but life had other plans. The loss of both parents—her mother in eighth grade and her father in her senior year—could have derailed her dreams. Instead, these challenges forged her resilient spirit.
“Dentistry carried me at times in my life when I couldn’t carry myself,” Dr. Geeson reflects. This early experience shaped her holistic approach to dental practice management, understanding that success comes from both professional excellence and personal support. Her comprehensive journey through the industry—from dental assistant to hygienist to practice owner— provided unique insights that would later prove invaluable.
In less than five years, she built and sold three dental practices at an impressive 8.5x multiple—a testament to her business acumen and revolutionary approach to practice management. This remarkable achievement stemmed from her deep understanding of every role within a dental practice and her innovative approach to team building and practice culture.
Today, as CEO (Chief Evolutions Officer) of Smiles at Sea and The Dental Festival, Dr. Geeson is transforming dental continuing education through destination learning experiences. Drawing from her own practice of taking her team on annual dental CE cruises, she creates opportunities for professionals to grow while building stronger practice cultures. “The most significant challenge is staffing,” she observes, addressing this through
what she calls “knights of the round table”—highly engaged team members who become the foundation of practice success.
Nominated for Most Valuable Resource in the 2024 Nifty Awards, Dr. Geeson’s impact extends beyond individual practice success. Her 90-day program helps dentists master critical practice systems while maintaining work-life balance, a philosophy born from her own journey of realizing that “life is and always was my own.”
Through innovative management strategies and a commitment to community building, she continues to elevate industry standards while helping others create their own paths to success in modern dentistry.
Matt Brown’s path to becoming one of dentistry’s most influential marketing experts began far from the dental office. As a former executive at the Frank Muller Watch Company and a seven-year special operations veteran at Fort Bragg—where he served as a hand-to-hand combat instructor and member of the Long Range Surveillance Team—Brown brings unique tactical expertise to dental marketing.
Despite having no prior dental or marketing experience, Brown’s vision for transforming dental practice growth led him to create Energize Group. “We are getting into dental,” he declared to his cofounder Ryan Raybould, driven by his observation that dentists needed superior marketing support and customer service. To truly understand the industry, Brown dedicated himself to learning dental operations from the ground up, spending Mondays sitting beside front desk staff to grasp the intricacies of practice management.
Nominated for Favorite Marketing Expert in the 2024 Nifty Awards, Brown’s company stands out for its commitment to data-driven strategies and transparent budget management. “Our first loyalty is to our clients’ return on investment, our first responsibility is managing our clients’ ads budget,” he emphasizes. This philosophy is embodied in Energize’s proprietary software platform, which provides dentists 24/7 access to their marketing metrics and ROI data, powered by industry leader Dental Intelligence.
Brown’s focus on generating high-value, fee-for-service patients helps practices reduce insurance dependency, while his dedication to case presentation training enables practices to effectively communicate treatment plans ranging from $5,000 to $20,000. Through bi-weekly case presentation webinars and comprehensive support for practice membership programs, Brown helps dentists build sustainable, profitable practices.
A self-described “big bald guy with a robotic leg,” Brown’s authenticity and commitment to client success have made him a respected figure in dental marketing. “I am loyal to your results before your feelings,” he states, embodying his dedication to delivering measurable success through trusted partnerships and data-driven strategies.
After three years pursuing an engineering degree, Dr. Adam Vega realized his passion lay in combining hands-on work with helping others. This revelation led him to dentistry, where he simultaneously earned his dental degree and MBA, merging clinical expertise with business know-how.
His defining moment came with the purchase of Mountain Smiles Dentistry, a struggling practice that had languished on the market for three years. Where others saw limited potential, Dr. Vega recognized an opportunity to revolutionize patient care. Through strategic implementation of cutting-edge technology and a laser focus on patient experience, he transformed the practice, tripling revenue in under two years.
“Most of what we do isn’t truly ‘needed’—it’s ‘wanted’ based on societal norms and pressures,” Dr. Vega observes, highlighting his unique perspective on dental care. This insight drives his practice philosophy: while clinical excellence is expected, patient experience determines success. His approach integrates advanced technology—CEREC same-day crowns, 3D printing, lasers, and CBCT imaging—with a deep understanding of patient psychology.
Beyond his practice, Dr. Vega hosts the Nifty Thrifty Dentists podcast, sharing successful strategies with fellow practitioners. His mission extends to helping dentists realize that success in dentistry isn’t about following a single formula but finding what works for their unique goals and circumstances. “Success takes time,” he advises new dentists, “but if you stay focused, put in the work, and stay consistent, those small wins will add up faster than you think.”
Through his practice, podcast, and mentoring efforts, Dr. Vega continues to demonstrate how combining technological innovation with human-centered care can create exceptional patient experiences while building a thriving dental business.
Kyle Summerford’s rise in dentistry is a story of accomplishing the “American dream.” Starting as a 19-year-old parent seeking stability in a dental office, he transformed challenge into opportunity through determination and mentorship. Growing up in the New York City Housing Authority without a financial safety net, Summerford’s transformation from entry-level staff to industry leader is an inspiring example of the power of perseverance and continuous learning.
His breakthrough moment came in 2006 when he took on the role of office manager for a struggling practice in Bayside, Queens. Faced with low patient retention, disorganized systems, and financial instability, Summerford implemented comprehensive changes that transformed the practice into a profitable enterprise, ultimately facilitating its successful sale.
Today, Summerford focuses on dental practice management, particularly excelling in patient retention, case acceptance, and insurance navigation. He’s also the proud creator of the Dental Office Managers Community on Facebook and serves as editorial director for dental management content at DentistryIQ.com.
His approach emphasizes the importance of emotional intelligence and communication skills in building patient trust and creating strong relationships. Leveraging over 20 years of industry experience, Summerford has developed a strong understanding of practice management systems, implementing cutting-edge tools like Archy, Pearl AI, and Mango Voice to streamline operations and enhance patient experience. —Summerford provides free resources including templates, consent forms, and coding guides to help practices run more efficiently. His workshops on leadership and critical topics like periodontal coding and documentation continue to elevate industry standards, making him an invaluable resource for dental professionals nationwide.
Kari Carter-Cherelus has emerged as a powerful advocate for professional wellness in dentistry, transforming her own experience with career challenges into resources that benefit the entire industry. During the pandemic, she made a pivotal decision to invest in coaching services and intensive continuing education, a choice that would reshape not only her career but her approach to dental professional development.
As the author of “The Ultimate Guide for Dental Hygienist’s Burnout” and host of the “Burnout Bites” podcast, Carter-Cherelus addresses one of dentistry’s most pressing yet often overlooked challenges: professional burnout. Her work helps listeners understand that many industry professionals have faced similar struggles and, more importantly, that there are diverse paths to recovery and career fulfillment.
Currently serving as a professional product educator for major brands including Arm & Hammer/TheraBreath, Ivoclar, and OraBio, Carter-Cherelus bridges the gap between product knowledge and practical application. Her role allows her to educate offices, schools, and clinics on how to optimize product usage for better patient outcomes while maintaining practitioner wellbeing.
“One of the most significant challenges facing dentistry today is access to care,” she notes,
pointing to barriers including cost of treatment, workforce shortages, and regulatory issues. Her solution focuses on helping practices attract and retain team members through flexible hours, competitive compensation, and supportive work environments.
Through her speaking engagements, consulting work, and written contributions to various publications, Carter-Cherelus continues to advocate for professional development that prioritizes both clinical excellence and personal wellness, helping shape a more sustainable future for dental professionals.
Michael Swider’s entrepreneurial journey in dentistry began with a marketing and management degree from Columbia College and a pivotal inspiration from his capstone professor’s success story. His entry into dental equipment solutions came through careful attention to market needs, particularly after a conversation with our magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Glenn Vo, in the Dental Garage Facebook group, which revolved around the industry’s need for quality refurbished equipment.
Under Swider’s leadership, his company has revolutionized the dental equipment market by bringing crucial services in-house—from seamstress work to upholstery and painting departments. His innovative approach includes establishing strong vendor relationships with major manufacturers to ensure a steady supply of quality equipment, making advanced technology more accessible to practices of all sizes.
Embracing modern solutions, Swider has integrated 3D printing technology to address one of dentistry’s persistent challenges: obsolete equipment parts. His company’s 3D printing
department now reproduces discontinued parts and creates components that enhance equipment longevity, demonstrating his commitment to sustainable solutions in dental practice infrastructure.
Beyond equipment sales, Swider has developed a comprehensive approach to practice support, offering everything from simple equipment orders to complete practice design and setup services. His philosophy emphasizes practical solutions over flashy features, advising new dentists that “just because it’s new doesn’t mean you get to charge patients more for it.”
His commitment to industry growth extends to the next generation through a paid internship program for high school graduates interested in trades, offering exposure to dental equipment technology as an alternative career path. This initiative, combined with his family-oriented business approach, exemplifies his dedication to building not just a business but a community within dentistry.

HMP Consultants
Harsh P t
By Ethan Webb, Managing Editor of Dental Lifestyles Magazine
Dentists spend years mastering the clinical skills needed to provide exceptional patient care. Yet, many graduate without a solid business and financial management foundation. That’s where Harsh Patel—winner of the 2024 Nifty Award for “Favorite Dental CPA”—comes in.
From Corporate Finance to Dental Champion
While working in corporate tax, Harsh noticed something distinctive about the dental industry—practice owners weren’t just seeking tax preparation; they needed a financial educator and partner who truly understood the unique challenges of running a dental practice. This insight inspired him to launch his own firm in 2019, HMP Consultants.
“Colleges and educational systems don’t focus too much on the tax and accounting pieces,” Harsh explains. “When students come out of college, they start earning money but need to focus on how to save it and understand the whole tax piece. They haven’t dealt with that before.”
Though HMP Consultants initially served various industries, Harsh’s experience with dental clients led him to boldly transform his Chicago-based firm into a dental-specific practice. Today, his team serves clients all over the nation—from fresh
graduates opening their first practice to established multi-practice owners.
A Different Kind of Financial Partnership
What sets Harsh apart isn’t just his specialized knowledge of dental practice finances—it’s his methodology and how he partners with his clients.
While many CPAs might meet with clients annually, Harsh insists on monthly or quarterly meetings. He believes in breaking down complex financial concepts into understandable components, helping dentists grasp everything from basic bookkeeping to advanced tax strategy.
“Sometimes when I take a new client in, they really don’t know what the numbers mean,” Harsh shares. “They don’t know that they need to have their financials done on an ongoing basis, like tax estimates—those little things that need to occur throughout the year.”
His comprehensive service model includes everything from daily bookkeeping through QuickBooks Online to strategic planning for practice expansion. Harsh’s team monitors transactions, reconciles statements, and creates custom reports comparing clients’ performance against industry benchmarks. They
advise on equipment purchases, help structure retirement plans, and guide practice transitions.
The True Cost of DIY Financial Management
Harsh isn’t afraid to challenge some dentists’ DIY approach to their finances. He encourages practitioners to consider the “opportunity cost” of managing their own books: “What do you value with your time? Whatever your hourly rate is, if you put that towards your practice, I guarantee you’ll make more out of it than spending time doing the administrative stuff.”
This perspective reflects Harsh’s larger philosophy about dental practice management—that success comes from focusing on what you do best while partnering with specialists who can handle the rest. It’s an approach that has earned him not just this year’s Nifty Award but the loyalty of practices nationwide.
As the dental profession continues to evolve, having partners like Harsh Patel who understand both the numbers and the unique challenges of dental practice ownership becomes increasingly valuable. His work reminds us that success in dentistry isn’t just a matter of clinical excellence—it’s about building a strong financial foundation that supports your ability
to provide the best possible care to your patients.
