SAP Ratings L009

The SAP rating is used to measure the energy performance of dwellings, using a scale from 1 to 100. The higher the number, the lower the running costs. The Environmental Impact Rating, based on the annual CO2 emissions, is expressed on the same scale of 1 to 100; the higher the number, the better the standard.

Some air source heat pump products are now included on SAP Appendix Q database, which sets out how their energy cost performance should be calculated in SAP ratings. As an Appendix Q approved product, a Daikin Altherma system can help achieve higher SAP ratings within a dwelling when its performance data is included in SAP calculations instead of default values for air source heat pump.

An Introduction to SAP ratings SAP stands for Standard Assessment Procedure and is adopted by the Government as the UK methodology for assessing the Energy Performance of Dwellings. SAP is used to both demonstrate compliance with building regulations for dwellings – Part L (England and Wales), Section 6 (Scotland) and Part F (Northern Ireland) – and to provide an energy rating for dwellings, which is then displayed in an Energy Performance Certificate. This methodology complies with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.

Calculating the energy and environmental impact of dwellings An Energy Cost Rating (the SAP rating) The SAP rating is based on the energy costs associated with space and water heating, ventilation and lighting, minus the cost savings from energy generation technologies. The calculation is based on the energy balance taking into account a range of factors that contribute to energy efficiency: • Materials used for construction of the dwelling • Thermal insulation of the building fabric • V entilation characteristics of the dwelling and ventilation equipment • Efficiency and control of the heating system(s) • Solar gains through openings of the dwelling • T he fuel used to provide space and water heating, ventilation and lighting

The Appendix Q website http://www.sap-appendixq.org.uk/ page.jsp?id=1 provides a searchable database of performance data for technologies and products, which can be entered into a SAP calculation. Technologies currently assessed via Appendix Q include: • Heat Pumps – air source and ground source • Mechanical ventilation systems • Flue Gas Heat Recovery Systems (FGHRS) • Waste Water Heat Recovery Systems (WWHRS) • Hot Water Only Boilers For detailed guidance on how to incorporate data from Appendix Q into SAP calculations, please go to http://www.sap-appendixq.org.uk/page.jsp?id=4 and download the relevant spreadsheet for the technology you are using.

Daikin Altherma is included on SAP Appendix Q Daikin Altherma products are listed on the SAP Appendix Q database. This Appendix Q data for Daikin Altherma can be included in SAP calculations to help consultants, specifiers and housing professionals understand how greater energy efficiency levels – and therefore higher SAP ratings can be achieved – using Daikin Altherma air source heat pump systems. Only products listed on Appendix Q can be entered into SAP calculations, so it is important to check this database when specifying technologies – especially if you are aiming to achieve a higher SAP rating by using energy efficient technology.

• Renewable energy technologies An Environmental Impact (EI) rating The Environmental Impact rating is based on the annual CO2 emissions associated with space and water heating, ventilation and lighting, minus the emissions saved by energy generation technologies. A Dwelling CO2 Emission Rate (DER) The Dwelling CO2 Emission Rate is used for the purposes of compliance with building regulations. It is equal to the annual CO2 emissions per unit floor area for space and water heating, ventilation and lighting, minus the emissions saved by energy generation technologies, expressed in kg/m²/year.

What is SAP Appendix Q? SAP methodology alone offers only generic data on the general capability of technologies such as air source heat pumps. In order to provide a more accurate rating, SAP Appendix Q offers the opportunity to include manufacturer and product specific performance data for evaluation on SAP assessments, which was originally not available when SAP was published in 2005. This information is made available to energy performance assessors. It also sets out the test and calculation methods for product performance – and how the results of these tests can be used in SAP calculations. Values in SAP-Q are from actual test measurements.

Daikin Altherma models currently on the SAP Appendix Q include: • 6 kW Daikin Altherma Low temperature split system ( EKHBH008 (INDOOR UNIT) + ERHQ006 (OUTDOOR UNIT) ) • 8 kW Daikin Altherma Low temperature split system ( EKHBH008 (INDOOR UNIT) + ERHQ008 (OUTDOOR UNIT) ) The SAP method of calculating the energy performance and the ratings is set out in the form of a worksheet, which is accompanied by a series of tables. The calculation should be carried out using a computer program that implements the worksheet and is approved for SAP calculations. (BRE approves SAP software on behalf of the Department for Energy and Climate Change; the Department for Communities and Local Government; the Scottish Government; the National Assembly for Wales; and the Department of Finance and Personnel). The 2009 edition of the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP 2009) will be introduced from October 2010 and will be used for compliance with building regulations in England & Wales (Part L) and in Scotland (Section 6) and for the generation of Energy Performance Certificates for new dwellings. It sets out to reduce global warming emissions by a flat 25% compared to the level set by the previous 2005 edition.
