MAKING COLORADO BETTER FOR ALL 2 0 1 6 A N N U A L R E P O R T
DISCOVERING COLORADO'S CIVIC DNA Whether you’ve done business in Colorado for three months or 30 years, you know that how we work here is pretty different from the rest of the country. It’s a quirk that has been studied by researchers, journalists and pundits alike who just can’t quite understand how we work together so seamlessly to make Colorado a great place for all. Maybe we took it for granted ourselves, because we had never really articulated what that difference-maker was—we just knew something remarkable was happening here. With access to thousands of Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation alumni—so many of whom model this unique approach to community-building every day—we set out in 2015 to better understand how we work. We interviewed more than 250 civic leaders and influencers and gathered more than 1,000 clues—surprisingly (or maybe it shouldn't be a surprise), the same five attributes and aspirations consistently rose to the top.

They are the secret sauce. Our competitive advantage. They reflect how we work in the community and are part of every leader here. In short, they comprise Colorado's Civic DNA. Now that we've successfully captured these powerful insights, our job is to pass Colorado's Civic DNA on through our programs, experiential opportunities and alumni. As you take a look at what we’ve been up to over the past year in the pages that follow, you’ll see how Colorado’s Civic DNA permeates that work and the lives of our emerging leaders. Best regards, Dan Lewis, Executive Director Katie Kramer, Chair, Board of Directors and Vice President and Assistant Executive Director, Boettcher Foundation

LEAD FROM WHERE YOU STAND We know leadership matters, and it often starts early. That’s why we support a league of collegiate leadership programs and scholarships through the Colorado Leadership Alliance. Every January, the Leadership Foundation brings together hundreds of student leaders from colleges around Colorado for a one-day summit to develop their skills and expand their networks. This year, students participated in interactive exercises to build negotiation and facilitation skills and explore Colorado's Civic DNA. Fifty-five community leaders joined students on the Mentors Walk, exploring future career and leadership opportunities together. Impact Denver, aimed at young professionals looking to kick-start their community involvement, hit a number of milestones this year. The program celebrated a decade since its inaugural class, with a record 109 leaders in two teams this spring. In addition, the program launched its first fall class in July, opening up more opportunities for millennials to make a difference in our community. That means we’re growing our impact, too. The spring class took on 14 challenging projects at the request of community organizations from across the region. COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS SERVED BY IMPACT DENVER

Student Leader of the Year
My heart is lifted at the sight of young leaders at a white board mapping out our next generation. My hope is raised when I see people embrace the conflict with open arms, to make it productive. My spirit is raised when I see youth ask questions to challenge the process. That’s when my heart is lifted.” AN EXCERPT FROM A POEM BY NEDA KIKHIA, WHICH SHE READ AT THE CELEBRATING CIVIC LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON DURING HER STUDENT LEADER OF THE YEAR AWARD ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

FOCUSED ON INCLUSIVITY:
NEDA KIKHIA Neda Kikhia was in eighth grade when she was called a terrorist. It was, needless to say, traumatic, particularly because someone had made assumptions about her because Kikhia is Muslim. That experience with discrimination has stuck with her as she’s moved on to college at the University of Denver. Instead of letting that incident upset her, it has fueled how she approaches leadership in the community and the kind of work she focuses on: inclusivity. For that work, she was named the Leadership Foundation and Boettcher Foundation’s Student Leader of the Year. “I think that it is a total injustice to basically call out one of a person’s many identities and just let that identity swallow them, and it totally wipes away any other identities that they have,” she said. “Hearing stories of successful leaders that maybe are Latina, AfricanAmerican, Muslim … they’re not always the ones that match terrorists or whatever ugly stereotypes that we have in humanity. When we break those [stereotypes] and show the beauty that exists in diversity is when we start to change social injustices.”
LEARN TO LEAD Now in its 42nd year, Leadership Denver (LD) continues to connect engaged leaders to key regional issues and to one another so they can lead meaningful change in the community. After 11 months together, the self-proclaimed LD Sweet 16 class began work on its project to support the community. The class is creating a campaign to raise awareness around energy and resource management. Using gamification, people can earn badges and rewards as they learn. The class aims to continue to adapt the campaign based on other hot topics facing the region.

RALLY YOUR COMMUNITY As Denver steps onto the global stage – with new international flights, the University of Colorado A Line to Denver International Airport and a 10th Fortune 500 company – 158 business and civic leaders headed to Chicago for the 26th Leadership Exchange to learn how it has positioned itself as a truly global city. Inspired by Chicago Public Schools, Colorado Succeeds has adopted a new approach to predict student success, the Colorado Readiness Report, released in August 2016.

LEADERSHIP IS A JOURNEY For senior executives new to the region, Access Denver is an introduction not just to what issues community leaders here are focused on but how they work to solve those issues. In August, 52 executives explored the Denver metro area—a new hometown for many—digging into challenges including affordable housing. Ninety delegates from 25 industry sectors hit the road with the Leadership Foundation in May on Colorado Experience (CE). Traveling to northern Colorado, they explored innovation—particularly in resource management, talent and arts and culture. Through CE, alumni can continue to build their knowledge, networks and experiences in a new setting with a focus on statewide issues.

RESPONSIBLE TO THE COMMUNITY It felt a little like Oscar night in the Colorado Convention Center on March 8. Holding a golden envelope, 9NEWS Anchor Gregg Moss announced the 9NEWS Leader of the Year: Dr. Ryan Ross. Ross was the first 9NEWS Leader of the Year to be chosen by Leadership Foundation alumni and announced live at the Celebrating Civic Leadership Luncheon. Heather Lafferty, executive director and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, and Michael Mitchel, former executive director and commander for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1, were among the finalists with Ross, who is formerly the dean of Student Development and Retention at the Community College of Denver and now is president and CEO of the Urban Leadership Foundation of Colorado and western region campaign director of the American Petroleum Institute. In addition to recognizing the impact of three outstanding community leaders, the event raises funds for the Leadership Foundation’s Emerging Leaders Scholarship Fund to ensure that each of the Foundation’s programs has the diverse perspective of leaders from all backgrounds.

LIVING COLORADO'S CIVIC DNA:
DR. RYAN ROSS Dr. Ryan Ross has made it his life’s work to battle inequity through education. He’s done it out of passion, but also with a sense of responsibility—to his own neighborhood in Five Points and to the mentors who helped him get an education. “Having mentors for me was everything,” Ross said. “People believed in me before I believed in myself. Being able to be a mentor now is so rewarding and creates a positive cycle that encourages the spreading of leadership.”
Having mentors for me was everything. People believed in me before I believed in myself."
Ross has mentored young men, established two annual scholarships and provided the support students need in college to get to class, stay in school and go on to graduate. Ross has a vision for the future where everyone has access to a college education, says longtime friend and One Chance Colorado Executive Director James Coleman. It is for that vision, responsibility and leadership that the Leadership Foundation and 9NEWS named Ross its Leader of the Year.
