Tacoma, Washington Haddaway Hall, Weyerhaueser Mansion $6,400,000 Haddaway Hall was built by John and Anna Weyerhaueser. John was the oldest son of Weyerhaueser Lumber Co. founder, Frederick Weyerhaueser, and was president of the Weyerhaueser Company. The mansion was designed in the Jacobethan revival style by the Cornell Brothers architects. In a biography on the Weyerhauesers it was noted that the project was primarily Anna’s, and John named the home “Haddaway” as a cryptic pun for “had her way,” since Anna had her way about most aspects of the home’s design.

HERRY HILLS COUNTRY CLUB was born in 1922 from wealthy businessmen in the city and carved from the earth by well-known designer William Flynn, who charged the princely sum of $4,500 for his architectural services. Flynn was best known for his redesign of Shinnecock Hills on Long Island (site of the 2004 U.S. Open) and he routed a golf course worthy of national recognition. But, as anyone who have walked its fairways and become champions under the most challenging of conditions. Cherry Hills certainly has earned its place on the American golf landscape. Not only have eight USGA competitions been held here, but also two PGA Championships have been staged on the 7,000-plus-yard layout. The champions have included some of the game’s greats: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Jay Sigel, Hubert Green, Andy North, Ralph Guldahl, Vic Ghezzi and Lewis Oehmig. And in June 2005, Cherry Hills welcomed another USGA championship, the U.S. Women’s Open. With a storied history, the Country Club defines the Cherry Hills village neighborhood. Golf fanatics will love the bragging rights. With a central location, there are nine public and private courses near Cherry Hills Village. Other outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the nearby Highline Canal with cottonwood-lined biking and hiking paths and equestrian trails that will take you on tour of nature through rolling plains and sprawling parks.

Entering the final round of the 1960 U.S. Open, few people gave Arnold Palmer a chance. He was seven strokes behind 54-hole leader Mike Souchak and even writers told him a 65 wouldn’t be enough. Palmer never adhered to such rhetoric. He promptly drove the short par-4 first hole and made a birdie en route to a 65. Meanwhile, the leaders faltered, leaving only Ben Hogan and an unheralded 20-year-old amateur by the name of Jack Nicklaus with a chance. Hogan sank his hopes at the par-5 17th, while Nicklaus, playing with Hogan, three-putted 13 and 14 to fall out of contention. Palmer suddenly had his championship. It would be Palmer’s only U.S. Open title.

or those of us who have a passion for collecting, there is a brand that has recently captured my attention. My collecting tends to lean towards the exotic, especially in watches. With watches, I usually steer clear of the common brands and gravitate towards the brands that we don’t typically see in Denver, such as Audemars and Parmigiani. In pens I gravitate toward Krone and Michel Perchin. I have found a new passion and it includes knives -- something new for me. William Henry is an American luxury brand devoted to the vision of designing and building superlative functional jewelry crafting collections that integrate form and function into exquisite and unique pieces that belong to a category all their own. Designer and entrepreneur Matt Conable founded the company in 1997 and is now the sole owner. of functional jewelry for men. Today’s collections include writing instruments, money clips, golf tools, and William Henry has proudly grown to become one of the most admired and sought after brands in the world of luxury for men. The seamless integration of classic natural materials, precious metals & gemstones, and state-of-the-art alloys is a hallmark of William Henry’s work. But what makes this brand so distinctive is that it has proudly retained the aura and feel of an artisan workshop, where every piece is designed and created exclusively in small, limited, often unique editions. “For many premium watch brands, an edition of 1000 numbered pieces might be an ‘exclusive’ offering” – says Matt Conable. “At William Henry, that would be the largest and least exclusive offering in our history.” Hand-forged tapestries in metal, chisel carved silver, hand-burnished gold inlay, fine hand engraving, exotic materials, and inlaid gemstones are interwoven into stunning pieces of timeless stature. The distinctive character of the artistry and the personality of the materials make this brand’s every creation truly unique. No two pieces are alike. “I like the idea that William Henry’s creations strike a personal chord in our clients” – says Conable. “Every now and then, it is important to invest in objects that are personal, immediately useful, yet timeless in their appeal and relevance – these rare pieces are imbued with the personality of their owners, and become part of their living legacy.”

esign vs Decorating - two words that are often used synonymously but often erroneously. Both decorators and interior designers create beautiful and functional spaces. However when it comes to your home these two words couldn’t be any more different. Interior designers are licensed professionals who coordinate projects involving architecture, trade partners and construction. Interior decorators make aesthetic improvements, but they do not make structural changes to interior spaces. Consequently, interior decorators do not need to be knowledgeable about building and safety codes. Preparation, planning and execution are essential to the success of any venture. When making one of the most important, and probably the largest financial decision that one will ever make in their life, it simply doesn’t make any sense to go it alone. than 20 years of design experience in residential, commercial and hospitality applications. In addition Duet Design Group is LEED accredited in sustainable design and is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). Devon Tobin (ASID, LEED Green Associate, NCIDQ #28943) received her BFA from the University of Colorado Boulder, where she studied painting and drawing. She has traveled extensively, and was fortunate to have developed her craft when she studied art history and architecture in Italy. Devon also graduated with top honors from the Interior Design program at The Art Institute of Colorado. She is certified in sustainable design. Her cultural exposure and admiration for the world of fine art is reflected in both her work and life. Miranda Cullen graduated with honors from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. She brings sixteen years of experience to Duet Design Group, with a focus on model home, residential, and commercial projects across the country. As the former owner of MOD Interiors, Miranda has been recognized by a number of builder’s associations with awards for exceptional interior design. DDG recognizes that even within a single neighborhood, homes can vary dramatically. From elegant gracious living to homes filled with guests, children and dogs, all of the homes designed by DDG have evolved not by being left to their own devices, but rather by a watchful, practical, and imaginative eye ensuring that they adapt and grow to serve their function. DDG has created perhaps the ideal design philosophy. Balance is one aspect of this philosophy, a balance of function, beauty, and comfort. Your home is lived in, for living in, for your life and like its occupants a home is a living thing that develops and changes. So no matter your style - traditional, eclectic, urban, mountain, contemporary or historical restoration - our style is your style. The American Dream has long been defined by home ownership. Childhood memories of porch swings, baby’s nursery, holiday dinners, and conversations around the kitchen table are the very fabric of our society. One of the pleasures of walking through a professionally designed home is the way the different spaces open into one another, from room to room and floor to floor. Sleek and refined, but also totally easy. Your home should be the ideal place to gather with family, friends, or just relax and hang out. So what’s your dream?

t’s summertime, and the living is easy. So take your family and friends outdoors, and serve up a feast that takes advantage of Colorado’s beautiful warm weather and clear starlit evenings. Entertaining outdoors offers a refreshing change to the long dark months of more formal indoor get-togethers. Gone are the days of standing before the charcoal barbecue, slugging beer from a can while flipping burgers and dogs. Say goodbye to the plastic checkered tablecloth, flimsy plastic silverware and traditional paper cups and plates. Your next outdoor dinner party can be so much more, and can be a reflection of sophistication, good taste and beauty. Fortunately, you won’t require the services of a professional party planner to achieve the effect. Here are some tips that will make your next outdoor gathering both memorable and easy. When hosting a dinner party, appearance is everything. Make sure your table design and décor are welcoming, updated and practical. The days of the disposable dinner party are gone; thankfully they’ve been replaced by a huge array of colorful options designed to enhance even the most mundane of outdoor settings. The menu, admittedly a bit more complicated, should overflow with fresher, healthier and more colorful ingredients that can tempt even the pickiest of palates. When it comes to planning your next outdoor party, keep one thing in mind. Let your imagination be your guide, and keep it simple, fun and relaxed. Your guests will love the experience, and you’ll be amazed at what a good time you’ll have at your own party! Serving pieces should be varied and fun. A simple artisan-type glass pitcher can be cleverly placed in a large aluminum tub for a different effect, or water can be poured from a large colored glass bottle for a more casual look. A ceramic bowl filled with fresh organic cherries, and an oversized tray of succulent grilled fish, provide a light and tantalizing fare. Dessert is all about ice cream, whether in the form of sandwiches, sundaes or small bowls garnished with fresh berries.

garden party

Large white porcelain platters complement stunning painted china, in hues of gold, yellow and green. The platters are chunkier and less delicate, and blend perfectly with an expansive outdoor venue. Heavier rustic, artisan-type glassware add a more updated look and feel to the setting. Centerpieces should be minimal and heavier; more elaborate arrangements should be relegated to the great indoors. A rustic hammered copper vase showcases a bunch of sunlight yellow sunflowers. Freshly picked flowers from your own garden can add a splash of color and beauty to any table, and can be artfully arranged in a huge variety of containers. Cloth napkins, encircled by sunflower napkin rings, adorn simple bamboo mats. Serving pieces should include a variety of textures, including wood, stone and even ceramic for a more interesting and amusing effect. 39

PICTURE CAN BE WORTH MORE than a thousand words. Much, much more. When selling luxury properties online, agents and web designers say that the photographs buyers see of houses and lofts for sale are often the first - and sometimes the only - chance for a seller to make a good impression. Less-than-flattering pictures can turn buyers off and lead to lonely open houses and lack of showing activity. Good photos will grab people’s attention and drive their desire to come and see it in person. Bad photos have an equal but opposite effect, because on the internet buyers are one click away from a non-buying decision. Eighty percent of people across the country who bought a new home last year used the internet while house hunting, and they rated photographs as the most useful tool in their search, according to a survey of buyers and sellers by the National Association of Realtors. The survey also found that 24 percent of home buyers got their first glimpses of their new homes on the web, up from a mere 2 percent in 1997. Faun Hauptman, with The RE/MAX Collection said “I only use photos taken by professional photographers,” because “if things look appealing and professional, not only are buyers going to find the property appealing, they’re going to associate my work with being appealing and professional.” A National Association of Realtors (NAR) survey found that when it comes to web features that buyers considered “very useful,” 83 percent cited pictures, 81 percent cited detailed property information and 60 percent cited virtual tours. Unless you are selling your home yourself, your real estate agent will ultimately decide which photographs will go up on the various syndicated real estate websites, but brokers vary greatly in their policies on pictures. Some send their teams out armed with digital cameras, but others use only pictures taken by professionals. Still other agencies let brokers decide whether to take their own pictures or pay a fee to use the broker’s recommended photographers. All of which explains why there is such a wide range in the quality of photos found on real estate websites. “When you look at the difference between professional photos and ones taken by brokers with digital cameras, it’s not hard to see that you get what you pay for,” said Hauptman. “Professional photographers have top-of-the-line equipment, and they have an eye for making a place look its best,” Hauptman said. Their equipment can include a high-resolution digital camera, special lenses, a tripod and lighting equipment. “Since the photos are meant to be a sales tool, they will probably not showcase a property’s negatives. Our web site is going to be the face for your property, and we’re not going to put you up there without your makeup on. We’re going to make sure you’re ready for your photo opportunity.” But while agents will help by urging owners to get rid of clutter or by bringing in flowers to add color, most advise against making a property look better than it really is. “Every home has a birthright to have its best features shown,” said Hauptman. “But you can’t be deceptive. If you take a shot that’s not within the realm of reality, buyers aren’t going to talk to you when they come and see it, and they’re going to distrust the whole process.”

Choosing The Right School For

Choosing the Right School Requires Asking the Right Questions As real estate professionals, we are often asked about gifted schools and programming from parents whose purchasing decisions are driven in large part by their children’s academic and social needs. As parents of a gifted child ourselves, we know first-hand the added challenges and rewards of finding a good match for a gifted child and a school or program that is able to meet their specific needs.

B

FAU N G. HAU P T MA N w w w. F a u n H a u p t m a n . c o m

egin screening schools with information provided on school, district, and state department of education web sites. The percentage of students performing at grade level is not relevant unless it is abysmal. Instead, compare the percentage of students scoring at the top of state or national exams, the average numerical scores of top scorers,

54

and the growth or progress scores for top students. Ask private schools directly for information not available on their Web sites. Then make phone calls to principals at promising schools or schedule brief meetings. Start with the make-or-break questions below. Be polite -- compliment the principal on obvious school strengths -- but ask your questions, too. T H E R E MAX CO L L E CT I O N

{ Parents today have more options than they once did: traditional

public

schools,

magnet and charter schools, private schools, and homeschooling. There is little compelling evidence that children learn more in any one type of school. So choosing the right school requires asking the right questions. Below is an excerpt from “Choosing the Right School for Your Gifted Child” Digest of Gifted Research, Vol. 6, Issue 1, 2005. Taken from the Davidson Institute.

} Arrange to visit schools that you’d like to explore in depth. Ask your questions again on site. Observe: do you see the described activities occurring in the classrooms? Request testing information unavailable elsewhere. Contact teachers and parents of other gifted children and ask the same questions of them by phone or in person. Schools committed to gifted students won’t shy away from answering questions. Listen for inconsistencies: few teachers can meet the learning and social needs of gifted children without support from and coordination by the whole school. Inconsistency means that your child may have a roller coaster experience.

Here are the must-ask questions and the answers that you should seek: 1.) Does your school raise learning goals when a child is ready? How? Seek: more time spent working at each child’s readiness level and numerous subjects in which advancement is possible. Avoid: schools that claim that “our gradelevel curriculum is challenging for all students.” There is no one-size-fits-all curriculum. 2.) Does your school monitor individual students’ progress during the year? Seek: assessment of students every six weeks, at a minimum; weekly is ideal. The school must use the results of monitoring to increase difficulty for ready students and to change the instructional approach when progress stalls. Avoid: schools that do year-end assessments only or that do not make changes based on monitoring. 3.) What does your school do to teach critical thinking? Seek: significant time spent on research, creative and critical writing, and projects and exercises designed to teach analytic and conceptual thinking. Gifted children need a hefty toolbox of thinking techniques to ensure success and satisfaction. Avoid: schools that spend most of their instructional time on memorization and routine skills like handwriting. 4.) What percentage of students are gifted? Highly gifted? How are children identified? Seek: a large number of similarly gifted children in your child’s classrooms. Your child will develop better social skills, mutual friendships, and improved teamwork if grouped with intellectual peers. Avoid: schools with few gifted learners or with small numbers spread out among classrooms. 5.) Ask about other needs that are important to your family. For example, ask how your child will be accommodated if he or she is not self-motivated, has learning disabilities, or possesses strong nonacademic talents and interests. Your family may have other essentials to consider, such as scheduling constraints, financial limits, or strong values about what subjects are taught.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL

Your Children

If your child must attend a school that does not fit his or her needs closely, fill the gaps at home by offering activities and learning opportunities that the school does not. Request teachers who enjoy gifted children and who use the strategies listed above.Whatever route you take, being smart from the start about what a school should provide will help you choose wisely and enable your child to make the most of the school years.

en minutes from the edge of Denver lies a hidden valley echoing with stories of Colorado’s Wild West:, silver mines, stagecoaches, and bootleggers. Little Deer Creek rises at the head of the valley, fed by many springs on the thousand-foot forested hillside at whose feet it flows, until it meets the South Fork of Deer Creek. This stream joins the North Fork at what was the small town of Phillipsburg, forming Deer Creek, which flows east through a wild canyon to join the South Platte River at Chatfield Lake. The whole area, still called “Deer Creek,” was home to many silver mines in the 19th century, and miners built cabins along the creek and the stagecoach road that followed it through the hidden valley all the way to Leadville at over 10,000 feet in the Rockies, near Aspen. Just south of the area lies Waterton Canyon of the South Platte River. The hidden valley is a Colorado landmark. The ridges and peaks of its eastern and western hills, plus Coffee Top Mountain at the south end of the eastern ridge, were used as Forest Service Lookouts until 1918. They command views of the entire surrounding territory, including Pike’s Peak

to the south, Mt. Evans to the northwest, and the Denver plateau to the east. The Forest Service built a ranger cabin part way up the hillside in the middle of the valley, for easy access to the peaks and ridges. The valley was sold to the Maxwell Hill Coffee Company, which owned much of the Deer Creek area. They divided the area up into 100-acre parcels and soon after sold the hidden valley portion to a family of bootleggers. The bootleggers wanted this particular valley to produce their “moonshine” (home-made liquor, forbidden at the time by “Prohibition” laws) for a number of practical reasons. First, it had an exceptionally wet microclimate for usually-dry Colorado, resulting in many hidden springs on its western and eastern slopes. These included rare Artesian springs, prized for their high-quality water (the kind that made Coors beer famous), filtered by the rock in the hills and driven up to the surface by pressure, as opposed to ordinary, lower-quality ground- water. Second, the valley was hidden, private, and quiet, so the government’s agents, called “revenooers,” whose job it was to locate and shut down [cont. on page 57]

10 Minutes to Denver

Hidden Still Springs is a spectacularly beautiful, one-of-a-kind, 133-acre valley nestled in the foothills, only ten minutes from the southwest corner of the Denver metro area, and just minutes from Lockheed Martin in the Ken Caryl Valley. The gated valley, surrounded by 700 acres of Colorado open space land, is “hidden” because it can’t be seen until you pass through the second gate on its paved, private road. The property includes many prime building sites, perfect settings for one or more large manor homes or other structures. It is presently divided into four parcels, but its boundaries can be rearranged to suit. The valley is an exceptionally wet microclimate. This accounts for the many Artesian springs on its hillsides. This is the same kind of completely pure, delicious, Artesian spring water that made Coors famous. Water rights included. w w w. H i d d e n S t i l l S p r i n g s . c o m

it to prove it. But Peggy wasn’t helpless. When revenooers came up the valley and parked their cars near her house, she sneaked out and released their brakes, allowing the cars to roll down off the road and forcing the revenooers to walk back. One time she used her Irish gift of gab to talk them into coming into her chicken house to see the chickens, then locked them in. It was an ongoing battle, with neither side giving ground. Today, the valley is still hidden, private, and beautiful. The many springs still flow, and the Artesian spring with its concrete tank still supplies plentiful water for the house and gardens. The school at Deermont is no more, but the historical town sign endures, as do the remains of the store and dance hall at Phillipsburg, where Billy the Kid—the famous outlaw—is rumored to have danced. The forest and ecosystem have been lovingly cared for, so the meadow is even more lush with wildflowers than ever before, and the aspens flourish. The 1925 “palace” has been expanded and was completely remodeled in 2001. The stagecoach road has been paved, and electric gates installed. But sometimes at night, in the complete silence, you may hear the rattle of a stagecoach working its way up the hilly road and the hiss of steam from a moonshine still in the hills.

these illegal moonshine operations, would have a hard time finding them. Third, it was close to Denver, which made it easier to get their supplies and sell their moonshine. Finally, it was amazingly beautiful, with a lush, 20-acre meadow, abundant wildflowers, large aspen groves, Aspen-lined gullies carrying the spring water down the hills, and plenty of wildlife, including elk, deer, and many types of birds. The bootleggers built a house in the valley in 1925, described by neighbors at the time as a palace. They set a concrete tank in the ground, half in and half out, near the house, to collect water from one of the most productive of the Artesian springs, feeding it to the house through a pipe. They also built a stone “spring house” on top of another of the Artesian springs near the house, for food storage. The remains of this spring house are still on the property, and its Artesian spring still flows. Most importantly to them, they constructed a number of moonshine stills in the hills, each near a flowing Artesian spring. Remains of barrels and barrel staves still testify to their operations. The bootlegger family had a system of private signals to say whether it was safe to come into the valley. Peggy, the Irish wife, would use these signals to let her husband know whether there were any revenooers in the valley when he approached with his load of sugar for the stills. The revenooers were serious, too. Peggy’s husband had a hat with bullet holes in

herry Hills Village is, by far, Denver’s most prestigious suburb. The Village is well known for its rural atmosphere and quality of life. Incorporated in 1945, it’s location is key as its founders were deeply concerned about preserving the magnificent, open countryside ... an attitude still reflected by zoning regulations controlling development today. The Village is home to many of the city’s most luxurious and expansive residential properties, with most located on one to two acre home sites. Exclusivity, combined with an extensive multi-use trail system, which connects to adjacent cities and other regional trails, makes this community truly one-ofa-kind. Cherry Hills Village offers a tranquil setting while providing convenient access to the metro area’s business and entertainment venues. As I take people around the Village, one thing I often notice is that those just becom-

T H E REM A X COL L ECTION

ing familiar with Cherry Hills are confused by the various subdivisions. Each has it’s own charm and each has a distinct feel and flavor. Each of the areas in the map on the left represent very distinct differences in acreage sizes, home types, and land uses (both historic and present). There are several gated sub areas in Cherry Hills Village: Buell Mansion, Glenmoor of Cherry Hills, Cherry Hills Park and Cherry Hills Farm. Many of the homes in ungated pockets of Cherry Hills are individually gated, providing exceptional privacy and security, but without a formal homeowner’s association (including the cover property). Over the years Cherry Hills has transformed from a quiet community of horse properties and brick ranches, to a haven of uber-luxurious mansions. Still, there remains a country charm to the Village that can best be experienced when looking at some of the original acreage parcels that remain intact. 59 61
