Design of New Montbello High School Coming Into Focus

Montbello high school students, teachers, alumni, and parents spent the past year sharing their ideas and perspectives for the new Montbello High School. In 2021, nearly 1,300 community members provided input on the design of the new school through surveys, dialogue circles, one-on-one interviews, community meetings, and at community events. All this input was carefully reviewed by a Design Advisory Group made up of current and former Montbello educators, students, school administration and parents, as well as current high school students in Montbello.

For the past four months, these dedicated community members worked with Denver Public Schools (DPS) and its selected architects and builders to create an initial design for the new Montbello High School. Inspired by the Montbello name itself, meaning “beautiful mountain,” the Design Advisory Group selected a design approach that reflects unity among a rich mosaic of culture and traditions.

This theme is now being applied to design a Montbello High School campus that includes brand new spaces and renovated portions of the current building. The current design calls for the building’s auditorium, pool, and gyms to all be kept in their current locations but renovated to provide exciting upgrades. These would connect to an all-new commons, cafeteria, library, and classroom wings providing safe, modern learning environments with plenty of windows for natural light and inspiration.

“We are thrilled with the care and thought the community has brought to this project,” said Jane Crisler of EUA, part of the architecture team of EUA and Eidos Architects selected to design the school. “By renovating portions of the current building and then blending it with new spaces designed for current and future learning, this building can provide an important link between past, present, and future.”

The combination of renovation and new construction also preserves spaces that are unique to the Montbello campus. The swimming pool, which the community worked hard to add to the school in the early 1990s, will remain the only pool at a DPS facility in the area. By renovating the school’s auditorium, the campus will also keep an important performance and event space.

Throughout the design process, community leaders stressed the importance of designing a school that can thrive for decades to come. This includes creating flexible spaces that can be adapted as equipment and technology change over time. The building will also be designed to achieve net zero energy goals in the future.

The project now moves into the design development phase. This includes everything from securing permits from a number of different agencies to finalizing plans for how and when each phase of construction will occur. Construction on portions of the site is expected to begin this summer and Montbello High School will officially open in Fall 2022 in the current building. Work will be planned to provide continued access to the school and minimize impacts on students and staff as much as possible.Y

Este tema se aplica ahora para diseñar el campus de la Escuela Preparatoria Montbello, que incluye espacios totalmente nuevos y partes renovadas del edificio actual. El diseño actual requiere que el auditorio, la piscina y los gimnasios del edificio sigan en sus ubicaciones actuales, aunque se renovarán y proporcionarán mejoras atractivas. Estas instalaciones se conectarían con áreas comunes, la cafetería, la biblioteca y salones de clases totalmente nuevos que ofrezcan unos entornos de aprendizaje seguros y modernos con muchas ventanas para proporcionar luz natural e inspiración.

Babies’ Brains are AMAZING!

Can you imagine? Adults have about 50 billion neurons that help them learn, remember, make decisions, problem-solve and care about others. Babies are born with twice as many neurons - 100 BILLION just waiting to be connected for learning! They can make one MILLION neural connections EVERY SECOND! But those connections must be stimulated to stay active. That’s where families and pediatricians come in. Parents, did your pediatrician tell you at your infant’s well-baby check ups how important it is to TALK, TALK, TALK with your baby?

In 2020, Drs. Gretchen Domek and Bonnie Camp, Associate Professor and Professor Emeritus, respectively, of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, published an article in Clinical Pediatrics about their project to teach low-income, mostly minority parents at their 2-montholds’ well-baby check-up to use a finger puppet to stimulate their verbal interactions with their infant. Parents reported how calming the interaction was to their baby, how happy their baby became and how interactive the parents, especially dads, became. While the infant was getting language-rich interactions that will benefit them for a lifetime, the new parent was reaping the rewards of good parenting that reduced the stress of not knowing what to do with their new little life. Additionally, children whose parents reported using the puppet more had better child development outcomes over a year later.

The research on the impact of this simple and inexpensive way of teaching new parents ways of stimulating early language development suggests that the babies show enhanced language development by 12 months of age. Development which sets the stage for successful reading readiness which of course is essential to the building blocks for school success in elementary school and beyond. While the research is powerful, the voices of the parents who are seeing remarkable results with their own infants is even more powerful. I have learned the importance of talking to your newborn baby. I started talking and singing to my grandbaby at 2 months and now at 6 months I feel as if we are having a conversation because of how she interacts with me. Through these early conversations, I have built a relationship with her that will last a lifetime. I’m so happy and sad at the same time because I never did this with any of my 4 children. Now I will forever wonder what my children’s experience would have been in school if I had talked and read to them starting at 2 months like I have with my grandbaby. I want

Big families with working parents and crowded households mean everyone can have fun with a finger puppet to help the baby’s brain grow. They give their puppet a different character’s voice, sing songs, count and name objects around the house: all this simple talk builds the baby’s brain for later success at school.

“I love talking to my 2month-old with the finger puppets because they let my goofy side shine. When our baby was born, my husband said, “You can take care of the baby.” When he saw how happy our baby is and how simple it is to talk with a finger puppet, he started singing songs to her and he LOVES how she smiles at him. We don’t worry about what other people think: it’s just us and our baby. I know our infant is learning about different sounds and words and sees her mommy and daddy’s fun side as we bond with each other. Even my parents who weren’t involved in my education are learning how important it is to build their grandbaby’s vocabulary starting in her early stage of life.”

Los bebés nacen con el doble de neuronas: ¡100 MIL MILLONES esperando ser conectadas para aprender! ¡Pueden hacer un MILLÓN de conexiones neuronales CADA SEGUNDO! Pero esas conexiones deben ser estimuladas para mantenerse activas. Ahí es donde intervienen las familias y los pediatras. Padres, ¿su pediatra les dijo en los controles de salud de su bebé lo importante que es HABLAR, HABLAR, HABLAR con su bebé?

En 2020, los Dres. Gretchen Domek y Bonnie Camp, Profesora Asociada y Profesora Emérita, respectivamente, de Pediatría en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Colorado, publicaron un artículo en Clinical Pediatrics sobre su proyecto para enseñar a los padres de bajos ingresos, la mayoría de los ellos siendo minorías, a sus hijos de 2 meses durante el chequeo de bebé sano, para usar una títere de dedo para estimular sus interacciones verbales con su bebé.
