In May, the Montbello Organizations Summit, more than 70 participants identified barriers to organizations working collaboratively. Among those bar riers are lack of a shared vision across the community, competition for meager resources, and lack of trust among organizations to work collaboratively. There is an assumption that organizations are probably united in their vision for our community, but a stated vision has not been agreed upon. Elements of a vision were proposed by participants.

During the all-day convening, participants also identified issues and challenges affecting the neighborhood and were eager to come together to iden tify solutions. Following is a partial list of priority needs identified:

Collaboration is more than simple cooperation. Most collaboration requires leadership and vision. As you peruse the pages of this issue of the MUSE, you will see many examples of true collaboration. The experiences shared by Maricruz Herrera and LaKeshia Hodge in the cover story are examples of the impact and challenges experienced by their organizations as they endeavor to provide services for the residents of our community

YEntities must be trustworthy and engage in honest conversation.

YEverything takes longer than expected, you can’t do it by yourself, and in the end it will be worth it.

Yaccess to healthy food; Yreliable transportation within and outside the community; Yquality education for students 0 -18 years of age; safe spaces and adequate public safety resources; Yequitable access to health care (physical, mental, and behavioral); Yfinancial literacy for youth and adults; Yconnection and access to resources; Yaffordable housing; Ylanguage access; civic engagement; Ytrust-building across racial and ethnic lines in the community. As the day progressed, the participants made a commitment to working together to identify a shared vision, address trust issues, pursue collaborative models through funding opportunities, and to come back together by the end of the year to continue the dialogue and messy work of building collaborativeSomesolutions.ofthe takeaways from the day are as follows.

Maricruz Herrera Director of the Colectiva Creando Cambios When I was told we were going to have the conversation about collaboration and I was being asked to speak, the truth is a lot of questions came to mind. The main one centered on how I would start this con versation. I wanted to start by dressing colorful like you all know me. I am always dressed very joyful, and people may wonder why. I am going to an swer that question why, in ad dition to what my mission is and why I do my job. I am an immigrant from Mexico, and when I got to this country, we had a lot of fear. I always remember some words my mom told me. She said, “You can’t talk Spanish; we must be invisible. We must do things in a way we are not seen.” I remember being in places and thinking, “Why can’t I use my voice? Why can’t I say what I am thinking and do things others are doing?” Some years passed, and I developed the courage to work with organizations, as the opportunity was put there for me. I remember thinking at many reunions, is what I am feeling valid? I came to com prehend that things should not be the way they are.

Organizations of Montbello Summit Sets Eyes On Future

The truth is that I learned that we should not be invisible, and that is what I try to do in my job to the best of my abil ity. The circumstances that many immigrants face when we get to this country do not make us invisible. It should not be like that; we should shine bright and be noticed. We are here too, and we are part of this country too. This country is of immigrants as well, and we must change our situation. I believe to help someone shine, we make everyone shine brighter, and that is what we do here in Montbello, shine like a community.Let’snot be quiet because someone tells us to. Let’s work together to change that mindset to make us all feel seen. We are here, can you see us? And we are beautiful just the way we are. I believe that’s what is im portant — despite being quiet for so long. I learned that the best way to liberate others is with our voice and our way of being. So for me, it’s an honor to work in this community.

LaKeshia Hodge Co-Founder Struggle of Love My own life experiences growing up as a teen, being home, not getting a proper edu cation, it was just a struggle. So when Joel came to me with the vision of Struggle of Love, I thought this is exactly what I want to do. I can relate to a lot of the residents in the com munity that we serve. I’ve been in those shoes, and so I still say I’m doing it for me. We have our challenges. It’s been a long road to get to where we are now. But like Joel says, we couldn’t have done It without all of the support that we have received from everybody in the community.It’ssonice to see the same people who we started with are still here with us. Still grinding with us, wanting the same mis sion and vision that we see for the Montbello community. And we’re still collaborating and making positive things happen the best way that we can. We appreciate everybody’s sup port, and we are trying to give back to a community that has given us a purpose that we try to fulfill each day. I also want to shout out the Struggle of Love Foundation team. They are the dynamic leaders who are the boots on the ground every day in the community. And when I say boots on the ground, I mean they go out in the streets and

engage with youth who are at risk or have been identified as violent. They go out, and they actually wear bulletproof vests at times, appreciative that they put their life and for that, I’m really on the line to support this community and to help our youth.

Today Montbello is a differ ent community than when I moved here in 1976. The air port is to the northeast of us, and it has become a true eco nomic engine of our city. As the connection between that economic engine and down town Denver, we continue to seek better access to our com munity. When I see a group of engaged community citizens as large as the one that came to gether in May, I get really ex cited about what we will be able to do going forward. Some of the things that we would like to improve collec tively are: quality schools, more activities for teens, ad ditional restaurants for family outings, meaningful support for our high school that is com ing back, affordable housing, and the arts. I’m sure there are also many other items that the community wants to see come to fruition.Diversity in our community has seemingly been here since day one and, hopefully, it will continue to be here forever. It’s truly based on the marvelous, special and beautiful people who make up Montbello, which is why this community seems a bit more special com pared to others throughout the front range. After 47 years, I remain engaged because I truly, truly believe in Mont bello. My goal was to make our community better than when I arrived those many dec ades ago. Many great things are happening in our com munity today, but we still have a lot more to do as a com munity to fulfill our promise. I have sat at a table and been looked at differently; perhaps it was due to the lack of my school education. But I am a person who tries to work in justice, and it is one of my strongest abilities. That’s what makes me want to work in the community.Whendiscussing equity and justice with my peers at other organizations, I always ask that we unite as organizations and create a network to achieve the goals we have been talking about. It does not matter if the organization that I represent has been established for over 100 years; each day, we learn from the people we least ex pect.If we talk about collabo ration, we should have respect towards all organizations and the values that make them unique and authentic. We should not build barriers to those outside of our organiza tions because of their age or education level. We should take responsibility for things that will not allow us to get to our goals. I believe we have a com munity vision, and we will achieve it. It does not matter which organization leads the effort but rather that we all worked together to get there and say we got here because we got here together. Let’s not have one superpower. No! Cuando me dijeron que íba mos a tener una conversación sobre colaboración y me pidie ron que hablara, la verdad es que me vinieron a la mente muchas preguntas. La principal era acerca de cómo comenzaría esta conversación. Quería em pezar vistiéndome de colores como todos ustedes me con ocen. Siempre estoy vestida muy alegre y la gente puede preguntarse por qué. Voy a re sponder a esa pregunta: ¿por qué?, ¿cuál es mi misión? y ¿por qué hago mi trabajo? Soy una inmigrante de Méx ico y cuando llegué a este país, teníamos mucho miedo. Siem pre recuerdo algunas de las pa labras que mi madre me decía. Ella decía: “No debemos hablar español; debemos ser invisibles. Debemos hacer las cosas de forma que no nos vean”. Recuerdo estar en lu gares y pensar: “¿Por qué no puedo usar mi voz? ¿Por qué no puedo decir lo que estoy pensando y hacer las mismas cosas que los demás hacen?”

Pasaron algunos años y desar rollé el coraje para trabajar con organizaciones, tuve esa opor tunidad. Recuerdo haber pen sado en muchas reuniones, ¿es válido lo que siento? Llegué a comprender que las cosas no deberían ser como son.

Chris Martinez Presidente del Comité Organizador de Montbello Hoy Montbello es una co munidad diferente que cuando me mudé aquí en 1976. El aeropuerto está al noreste y se ha convertido en un verdadero motor económico de nuestra ciudad. Como conexión entre ese motor económico y el cen tro de Denver, seguimos bus cando un mejor acceso a nuestra comunidad. Cuando veo a un grupo de ciudadanos de la comunidad, comprometi dos, tan grande como el que se reunió en mayo, me emociono cuando pienso en lo que podre mos hacer en el futuro. Algunas de las cosas que nos gustaría mejorar colectiva mente son: escuelas de calidad, más actividades para adoles centes, restaurantes adicionales para salidas familiares, apoyo significativo para nuestra es cuela secundaria, que está reg resando, desarrollar viviendas asequibles y las artes. Estoy se guro de que también hay mu chos otros elementos que la comunidad desea ver llegar a buen término. La diversidad en nuestra co munidad ha estado aquí desde el primer día y con suerte, con tinuará aquí para siempre.

La verdad es que aprendí que no debemos ser invisibles y eso es lo que trato de hacer en mi trabajo, todo lo mejor que puedo. Las circunstancias que enfrentan muchos inmi grantes cuando llegamos a este país no nos hacen invisibles. No debe ser así; debemos bril lar y ser notados. Nosotros también estamos aquí y tam bién somos parte de este país. Este país también es de inmi grantes y debemos cambiar nuestra situación. Creo que, para ayudar a alguien a brillar, debemos hacer que todos brillen más y eso es lo que hacemos aquí en Montbello, brillar como comunidad. No nos quedemos callados porque alguien nos lo dice. Trabajemos juntos para cam biar esa mentalidad para que todos nos sintamos vistos. Es tamos aquí, ¿pueden vernos? Y somos hermosos tal y como somos. Creo que eso es lo im portante, a pesar de estar calla dos por tanto tiempo. Aprendí que la mejor manera de liberar a los demás es con nuestra voz y nuestra forma de ser. Por ello es que, para mí, es un honor trabajar en esta comunidad. LaKeshia Hodge Cofundadora de Lucha de Amor Mi vida fue la experiencia de crecer como adolescente, estar en casa, no conseguir una educación adecuada, fue sólo lucha. Así que cuando Joel vino hacia mí con la visión de “Lucha de Amor”, pensé: “Esto es exactamente lo que quiero hacer. Puedo identificarme con muchos de los residentes de la comunidad a la que servimos”. He estado en ese lugar y sigo diciendo que lo hago por mí. Tenemos nuestros desafíos. Ha sido un largo camino para lle gar hasta donde estamos. Pero como dice Joel, no podríamos haberlo hecho sin todo el apoyo que hemos recibido de todos en la comunidad. Es tan agradable ver que la misma gente con la que empe zamos todavía está aquí con nosotros. • Prohibits an HOA from imposing late fees, fines, and interest on a per diem basis in an amount that exceeds the lesser of $50 per day or $500 total.•Prohibits an HOA from charging a rate of interest on unpaid assessments, fees, or fines greater than 8% per year.

• Provide the option of en tering a payment plan prior to initiating a foreclosure. The HOA cannot initiate a foreclo sure for outstanding fines and may only initiate a foreclosure for outstanding assessment if the unit owner misses at least three payments and declines to enter into a payment plan.

City Council President Stacie Gilmore Over the past few months, I have worked with my staff to create the ‘HOA Foreclosure Notice Bill’ that will ensure community members strug gling with a foreclosure notice from a Homeowner Associa tion are presented with rights and resources to help mitigate their housing concerns. Through hearing our com munity’s experiences with the Masters’ Homeowners Associ ation of Green Valley Ranch and monitoring House Bill 221137, we realized there was a gap in ensuring property owners knew what their rights and resources were when faced with a foreclosure. The state bill opened a narrow window on noticing resources to home owners given the constraints of what we could legislate at the city level, and I knew we needed to act on it. I wanted to provide additional measures to prevent families from falling through the cracks and losing theirOnhomes.June3, 2022, Gov. Jared Polis signed House Bill 221137 into law that set limits on homeowners’ associations to foreclose on homes based solely on fines. With the pas sage of House Bill 22-1137, an HOA will be required to:

The service will also help transport res idents to and from the Denver Family Health Center. It is an ticipated that the shuttle will also connect residents to re sources and events outside of Montbello and offer some res idents vital help when it comes to food access. MOC will procure and maintain Class 1 e-bikes from a local e-bike vendor and will also acquire additional equipment such as portable charging stations, locks, and accessories (hel mets, vests, bike repair tool kits, etc.). MOC will also hire an e-bike library coordinator and educator to manage the li brary.The car charging station will be available for electric vehicle owners free of charge. As more and more Coloradoans are moving to electric vehicles, having viable charging stations in a community is a definite plus. The charging station will be located at Environmental Learning for Kids’ new educa tion center on Albrook Drive. “We are so excited to see the City and County of Denver make this sort of investment for the residents of Montbello,” says Mayra Gonzales, MOC Director. “This is a gamechanger for our community as we continue to develop new and sustainable ways to show case Montbello as vibrant and forward-thinking. Now more residents will have the ability to move throughout the neigh borhood to take advantage of what’s here and what’s to come.”Asthe initiative moves for ward, MOC will be offering Montbello residents an oppor tunity to apply for openings to work in support of this com munity journey. MOC will be hiring shuttle drivers, bike me chanics, and bike librarians to support the vision. E-mobility is on the rise, and together with residents, MOC will help build capacity and improve acces sibility for neighbors and com munity organizations by implementing the e-mobility technology. The Denver City Council has approved a more than $825,000 grant to the Mont bello Organizing Committee (MOC) to improve accessibil ity for residents across the Montbello community. In 2021, the Office of Climate Action, Sustainability, and Re siliency (CASR) conducted a Community Based Needs As sessment in the Montbello neighborhood, engaging with community members, com munity leaders and com munity-based organizations engaged with Montbello res idents. This assessment identi fied barriers that neighborhood residents face around their transportation options and also identified potential solutions that would help improve mo bility in the neighborhood using electrified transportation options. The grant will now en able MOC to supply a com munity electric van, install a commercial Level II electric charging station for the partici pating community based or ganizations (CBOs) and public use, and establish an electric bicycle library in the Mont bello community. In collaboration with twenty-six community part ners, MOC helped assess the community’s needs, which has brought about the three new transportation services. These expanded services are intended to promote community col laboration and accessibility to the great experiences that Montbello has to offer. As part of the implementation pro gram, MOC will recruit and provide education and training for contractors, participating CBOs, residents, and others to ensure safe operation of the electric van, charging station, and electric bikes.

Chris Siemen encourages his neighbors to come dish a little dirt at the Montbello United Church. Chris Semien and Ron Taylor are the gar deners in charge of the Mont bello Urban Farm, which is located adjacent to the church. Montbello Urban Farm is nes tled between Montbello “Five Loaves” Community Garden, run in partnership with Denver Urban Gardens, and the Mont bello Spiral Garden, run in partnership with Consumption Literacy Project, which pro vides farm-to-table gardening experiences for adults and chil dren.The gardeners spent last spring digging, mulching, and building raised mounds to create a healthy environment for the seeds and seedlings they planted in May. Supported by Children’s Farms in Action, Montbello Urban Farm pro vides healthy options for local families. During a recent tour, Simien proudly pointed out peppers, tomatoes, kale, greens, squashes, and more that will be harvested and sold at reduced rates during the Montbello Farmers Market in July and August. The Farmers Market is held each Saturday during the summer. He is espe cially excited about a new sun flower garden they’ve planted adjacent to Crown Blvd. “We wanted to provide color and beauty for those driving by and the neighbors who live across the street,” Semien explained. Semien became an avid gar dener in 2019 when he decided his front lawn could be put to better use than just growing grass. As his plants thrived, neighbors stopped to gaze at the thriving plants and ask questions. Semien said, “I got joy from seeing the looks on their faces – especially the children’s – and took pleasure from passing my knowledge on to the next group of gar deners.” At the Farm, he and Taylor share their knowledge with young people on a daily basis. Fifteen-year-old North field High School students Ja’Von and Deng are summer interns who spend their week day mornings mulching, weed ing, and caring for the plants. The pair initially signed up as interns to help the community and stay active – Ja’Von plays football, and Deng is on the basketball team at Northfield. As they’ve worked with Taylor and Semien, they’ve learned more about helping make the earth a better place and how gardening basics can be trans lated into providing food for your own family and neigh bors. Both teens encourage the community to visit the Farm and get involved. “Not too many people are aware of this place, and I think they’d enjoy the variety it offers,” said Deng.Mary Ann Bash also wel comes the opportunity to en gage with students, families and the community in garden ing. Of all times, during COVID closures, the Parents for Parity Each One Teach One garden at Marie L. Greenwood Early – 8th school provided a sanctuary for families to grow together. “The garden is about creating beauty, wonder, and curiosity in children and foster ing community,” says Bash.

Students in the June summer program are equally excited. Some are focused on practical matters like learning to plant and cook their harvest to help feed their families, while others are fascinated by the school’s innovative equipment including a solar oven and aer oponic plant tower. Many cite the storytelling about the school’s namesake, Marie L. Greenwood, and reading gar den-themed books as one of their favorite parts of the pro gram. All enjoy watching the produce grow and sampling the fruits of their labor ─ like the greens for salad, little straw berries that are so much sweeter than those in the grocery store and ripening cherries on the 12-foot tree.

Parents and community vol unteers are encouraged at the garden. Many come to learn tips for their home gardens or to encourage their own chil dren’s curiosity and learning.

It starts by empowering your self to empower everything around you. I have been living in the community for 22 years and started my business, Lu pita’s Delivery, 15 years ago. I began by cooking meals and distributing them to people who knew me. From there, I grew and established clients with whom I have been work ing for a long time. I cook tra ditional Mexican Food and deliver to businesses through out Aurora, social events, and on Sunday’s people can pick up from my house. Throughout the lifetime of my business, I have carried three main points with me: like what you do, do it with love, and produce it as if it was for yourself. Whatever I cook for my clients is what I would feed my own family. It’s been challenging to keep business consistent throughout the years and to expand in the business world, so when I heard that there was a vacancy for the Building Wealth from Within program, I did not even think about it. Coming into the training, technology has been one of the challenges I am overcoming. The world was watching. We were all waiting. Op-Ed by Adrienne Mansanares CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains Waiting for a U.S. Supreme Court decision that could change everything. One that could reverse fifty years of precedent. One that could elim inate federal protection for a critical right. One that would take away a freedom rather than codify it, something we’ve never seen our Supreme Court do before. One that could have devastating impli cations on other hard-won, lifeaffirming rights. I’m talking about the final decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the case out of Mississippi con cerning an abortion ban at fif teen weeks gestational age. In agreeing to take on this case, the Supreme Court already sig naled its willingness to take a drastic turn on our reproduc tive rights. And on Friday, June 24th, the Court followed through in what May’s leaked draft decision foreshadowed, overruling the landmark prece dent set by Roe v. Wade. We’re facing a future in which a patient’s access to abortion care depends on their zip code. We anticipate as many as 26 states moving to ban or severely restrict abor tion care within their borders in the moments, months, and years immediately following the Dobbs decision. That will leave 36 million women, plus others who can get pregnant, without access to abortion care in their home communities. It will push those with the means and ability to travel to pack their bags and make their way to safe haven regions of the country for care. It will leave those without such means and support with few, if any, op tions. There will be patients who are forced to carry preg nancies to term against their will.At Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, our re gion is one of those safe haven regions patients will be turning to for care they can no longer access at home. They already are, coming from states like Texas and Oklahoma where re cent legislative developments have made abortion care all but inaccessible, or, in the case of Oklahoma, completely banned. But here in Colorado, and in New Mexico and Nevada as well, abortion care will remain legal no matter what the Su preme Court decides. Our safe haven status didn’t happen by chance. It is solid and strong thanks to decades worth of hard, necessary, vi sionary work, done by organi zations like ours and so many of our esteemed community partners, plus dedicated, tire less volunteers, activists, and supporters, to establish social and political climates deeply supportive of access to our re productive rights. It will re main as such with all of our continued vigilance. Because of all the hard work that has been done to lay this founda tion, and with the continued support of the communities we’re so proud to serve, we can be here for patients seeking care - those from our local communities, and those who will be forced to travel to re gions like ours from across this country.Andwe will be there for them. One of our guiding prin ciples is the knowledge that health care is a human right. It’s not a political poker chip, rather something that must re main between a patient, their loved ones, and their health care provider, without any po litical interference or systemic barriers standing in the way. As we look to what has been called a ‘post-Roe reality’ of the future, know that Planned Parenthood won’t rest until ac cess to abortion care is not only restored for all, but vastly expanded, fiercely protected, and made ever more accessible through thoughtful, responsive innovations that allow us to truly meet our patients wherever they are. The U.S. Supreme Court may think they’ve written the final chapter on abortion rights and access in this country. But this story is far from over. One of which, the Radical Arts Academy of Denver, was seen as the perfect school for my partner and I’s daughter. Al though “Directors Anderson, Esserman, and Quattlebaum supported the RAAD application,” RAAD was not able to solidify the 4th vote needed for district approval. As a parent, poet, and performing artist who has lived in Montbello & Green Valley Ranch most of my life, the thought of having my daughter attend a Com munity Responsive Arts School in the Far Northeast was thril ling! Think of a Brown & Black-led Denver School of the Arts that focuses on serving “those who have an immense wealth of talent but have been historically excluded from truly transformative educa tional practices” (RAAD).

RAAD’s mission is “to pro vide high-quality Arts-Based Learning (ABL) opportunities to support whole child devel opment from a lens of critical consciousness through a com munity-responsive, culturally sustainable school design that promotes concrete pathways for student-artists to learn and heal through the arts”. As a teenager in Montbello, I ex perienced a car and home break-in and witnessed ongo ing domestic violence, yet making music and songs in the basement of 5104 Carson Street became my retaliation. When the Montbello com munity felt unsafe, the pen and pad during long bus rides to East High School nourished my artistic escape. Since then, I have had numerous conver sations with RAAD’s Ex ecutive Artistic Director Yuzo Nieto in anticipation that my 3year-old daughter could be an inaugural student of RAAD in Fall 2023 in hopes of cre atively addressing artistic scar city in the Far Northeast. The component which so lidified my interest in RAAD is their desire to incorporate mul tilingual language studies and bi-cultural literacy through songs. As a parent who started learning Spanish at Dr. Martin Luther King Early College in the early 2000’s, the prospect of my daughter learning Spa nish through language immer sion is extremely valuable to me and our family. Another reason for my excitement with RAAD is the opportunity of RAAD students, (RAAD stu dents just sounds dope…) po tentially being Freshlo Hub residents and having opportu nities to perform for their par ents throughout the year. With the Freshlo Hub scheduled to have residents in the coming years, there are numerous part nerships that can directly serve the Far Northeast communities in creative and holistic capac ities. There is unimaginable ar tistic potential in Montbello and Green Valley Ranch, re spectively; however, it is up to our community to galvanize such assets with love and resil ience.To honor the resilient cre atives, students, Black & Brown businesses, and vision aries between Green Valley Ranch, Montbello, and Welton Street, I will release a song in the summer called For The Sól. This Education Center has been highly anticipated by the Montbello community. Local residents were actively engaged throughout the process of co-creating this unique facility. This community-led approach is a model that could serve as a guiding star for similar initiatives across the state.

On June 29, 2022, Environ mental Learning for Kids (ELK) opened the doors of its new 3,820 sq ft home in the Montbello community after 26 years of service in Denver. Environmental Learning for Kids cultivates a passion in science, leadership, and service in a racially and socioeconomi cally diverse community of learners.

The Denver Tennis Park (DTP) is an independent, 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to youth devel opment through the game of tennis. DTP’s mission is in spired by how tennis can create opportunities for youth that come from diverse com munities, backgrounds, and abilities. Community programs are free for all Denver youth ages 7-18 with scholarships available for players of all levels who are interested in de veloping their skills through programs at the DTP yearround. To highlight, the com munity can take advantage of their 13-court indoor facility and outdoor courts.

The Colorado Lions Youth Organization has been an in strumental partner by playing a vital role in building trust and connecting the Denver Tennis Program with the diverse com munities of Denver. Led by Board President Isaiah Don alde, Colorado Youth Lions Org. is dedicated to combating youth violence and mental health issues that affect East Denver communities through sports, technology programs, and mentorship programs. Dur ing the summer of 2021, Col orado Lions partnered with DTP to bring a series of tennis camps to Montbello. The camps were a huge success, where kids of all ages learned tennis in a fun and engaging way. As we progressed, we had the opportunity to connect with parents to learn more about how the DTP can provide af fordable tennis opportunities for families in Montbello. This year, in partnership with Colorado Lions Youth Org., USTA Colorado, and Fuel the Drive Foundation, we are hosting FREE Colorado SERVES tennis camps Sunday mornings at Northfield High School through October! Developed through input from a community-led de sign advisory group, the new Montbello High School em braces both the past and the fu ture. The existing auditorium, main gym, and swimming pool will be renovated, and combined with all new spaces including a library, commons, cafeteria, auxiliary gym, and three stories of new classrooms. School leaders spent the spring thor oughly cataloging and storing the impressive collection of tro phies, banners, class gifts, and murals which are all part of the Montbello High School legacy so they can be featured in the newWhenbuilding.completed, the Mont bello High School campus will also include an outdoor plaza, which in addition to an alumni room, commons, and com munity clinic will provide new and improved community spaces. Renovation and con struction of the new portions of the school are scheduled to begin this fall. The first day of summer va cation marked the kickoff of a whirlwind of activity at the Montbello High School cam pus. Crews are spending the summer working on what’s being called Phase I of the new Montbello High School proj ect.Phase I involves preparing a portion of the current building to welcome Montbello High School students, teachers, and staff this upcoming school year. This will allow the school to safely and successfully oper ate for the next two years while work progresses to build excit ing new learning environments and renovate portions of the existing building. Nearly from the moment classes were dis missed for the summer, teams of workers began clearing all furniture and equipment out of the school and into temporary storage. Crews also began work to transform portions of the current building into ad ditional classroom and gath eringWhilespaces.aportion of Phase I involves creating temporary solutions to serve Montbello High School during this con struction period, much of the work will also prepare the site for the permanent building. This includes an expanded parking area off Crown Boule vard, and utility work that will require temporary lane closures on Crown Boulevard and 51st Avenue during the summer. “Our mission has been to develop a construction ap proach that minimizes disrup tion to students, staff, and the community as much as pos sible,” said Neisa Lynch, Montbello High School princi pal. “This is a big project that is set to deliver an amazing fa cility in the heart of Montbello. We know construction always brings challenges and we’re here to work with our neigh bors and school community throughout this process.”
