I Count, You Count, We All Count in the 2020 Census It’s that time again! Every 10 years, the Census counts every person living in the USA. Here’s three things you should know about the count: ONLINE, PHONE, MAIL

“A picture is worth a thousand words” The old saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” suggests that complex and sometimes multiple ideas can be conveyed by a single still image – a photograph. This issue of the MUSE is compiled around that notion start‐ ing with the cover photo by Montbello resident and hobby photographer Larry Murray. Larry writes “(this is) a pic of Montbello in the shadow of our beautiful western view. As I understand, that view was the impe‐ tus for our name (Montbello). Founded in 1966, this Far Northeast Denver neighborhood’s name translates from Italian to “beautiful mountain.” Striking views of Mount Evans, Long’s Peak, and the Continental Divide from the area inspired developers to name this new neighbor‐ hood after the picturesque mountain region in the Ital‐ ian Alps.”

We at the MUSE in conjunction with the Colorado Black Arts Movement (CBAM) invite you to submit your “pictures” that speak your thousand words that express your viewpoint about Montbello. What began five years

ago as a goal to secure a simple community amenity—a fullservice grocery store—has grown into a community vision for much more. Convened by Montbello Organizing Committee, Montbello residents have organized around the lack of healthy food, lack of spaces for engagement, and lack of af-

The result— a vetted plan for a grocery store and cultural hub with 96 units of affordable housing, known nationally as the Montbello FreshLo project.

Montbello FreshLo, which has already garnered local and national funding by foundations, including the Kresge Foundation, The Colorado Health Foundation, Mile High Connects, and The Denver Foundation, has now taken the next step toward actualization.

On Monday, February 24, MOC purchased land from RTD that was the former Montbello Park and Ride for “the FreshLo Hub,” clearing the pathway for construction.

In 2017 the Montbello team engaged more than 2,500 residents to provide input and guide the project. A draft plan was created, and in 2018, 118 stakeholders participated in a week-long process with a national panel of experts through Urban Land Institute to vet and flesh out the plan. The outcome of that process proved that the community’s vision and plan was doable and achievable.

Then began the arduous jour-

ney of securing funding and securing the site identified by the stakeholders as the preferable location of the project. Prior to becoming a Park and Ride, the property was the site of Montbello’s first grocery store, Safeway.

“It feels like it’s been a long journey to this point,” says MOC President, Chris Martinez. “But we are very proud that this project is being envisioned by the community and that it will be owned by the community.”

The property, which was purchased from RTD, is located in the heart of Montbello—on Albrook Drive, near Peoria Street. The acquisition was secured with the support of Colorado Enterprise Fund and Denver’s Office of Economic Development and Opportunity (DEDO). MOC won the bid for the land and has completed two required environmental site assessments.

“The community will continue to be involved in this process,” says Donna Garnett, Executive Director of MOC

and Manager of the FreshLo Initiative. “We will be holding community engagement meetings over the next nine weeks throughout Montbello to gather additional input.”

The Hub, which is estimated to cost around $40 million, will be funded through grants, investments, and loans through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit and New Market Tax Credit programs. Groundbreaking is projected for early 2021 with occupancy beginning in 2022. Housing units will be affordable for folks with incomes ranging between 30% and 80% of Denver’s area median income (AMI). Meeting spaces and small retail spaces for local business owners will be part of the plan. MOC is working with Burgess Development Services to work out the final design of the building. A top priority is for this development to help mitigate gentrification by making it possible for Montbello residents to continue to live and work in their own neighborhood.

we’ve had potential investors and funders express great interest in this project, each saying ‘let us know when you acquire the land,’” Martinez says.

“Well, we are very happy and proud to let them know: we’ve got the land!”

Dear Neighbors, I write to you with an update from Denver Public Schools. We have had big things happen for our schools and young people over the last couple of months. But some news has been heartbreaking.

We have lost many of our students to gun violence at the hands of other youth. When asked why this is happening, our students say that they have nowhere to go, no one to talk to, or nothing to eat after school.

In January, students from Dr. Martin Luther King Early College rightfully demanded to be given what they have been denied - knowledge of their own history. We have heard the same about Indigenous history.

The students pushed DPS to change the history curriculum to include Black history and history of different cultures because our current curriculum elevates white narratives.

Students from DSST to students on the Montbello Campus want to know if DPS will be able to provide them the high school seats they want and deserve.

Our Black educators held a press conference to highlight the lack of educators of color in our school, and that we have high teacher turnover because of our school policies.

I’ve heard these concerns loud and clear, and I have worked hard to bring some solutions.

•On February 4TH Superintendent Susana Cordova announced we will create a committee to examine re-opening a comprehensive high school in Montbello. We would like to see the Montbello building make it to the 2020 Bond. This committee will

work to also decide if we will have a new building or if we will renovate the old one.

•On February 20th DPS announced that we will issue $100,000 in mini-grants to schools to provide Extra-Curricular, Well-Being, or Academic Opportunities for Students. Mayor Hancock announced that he would match DPS’ commitment, bringing the total to $200,000 to be used by schools and community partners. Sign up if you have an exciting program!

•In February, DPS’ Chief of Academics, Tamara Acevedo, visited DMLK Early College to create a project plan and timeline for curriculum change. More ethnic studies classes (Chicano studies, Indigenous history, and Black history) are available; they count for high school graduation requirements; and some classes count for college credit.

•Finally, senior staff met to plan a comprehensive accountability plan for retaining leaders of color which includes exploring opening an intern Ombudsman role to create a safe place to report and mediate cultural bias or differences; and to evaluate and change our policies that have negative impacts on different identity groups or different school communities.

MONTBELLO IN THE NEWS “I’m really excited about the potential partnership in creating a Montbello campus that better fits the community’s vision,” Cordova wrote, “and we come to the conversation openly and enthusiastically.”

Far northeast Denver is the only part of the city without a comprehensive high school. Instead, there are 11 small high schools, many with fewer than 500 students. Two years ago, after the desire to reopen a comprehensive high school surfaced in a different districtled community committee, the leaders of some of those small schools pushed back.

Denver to explore reopening a traditional high school in Montbello, 10 years after decision to close it

he idea of reopening a comprehensive high school in the Montbello neighborhood in far northeast Denver is back on the table.

The announcement comes nearly 10 years after the Denver school board voted to close the former Montbello High School, a neighborhood hub that was struggling academically. Many students, teachers, and community members objected to closure, pleading with the board to give the school another chance.

The announcement also comes six months after the district began soliciting community feedback on redesigning the building that once housed Montbello High, which is now home to five small schools.(See MUSE August, 2019 special issue). At the time, district officials made clear they wanted feedback on how to best serve those small schools, not on whether to reopen a comprehensive high school.

But the idea of reopening Montbello High, which was a source of pride for many in the neighborhood, has refused to go away.

“What is clear from these conversations is that the Montbello community wants to talk about the learning facility here,” Denver Public Schools Superintendent Susana Cordova wrote in a letter to the community this month. “Ad-

ditionally, many expressed a desire to talk about academic programming, including the interest in creating a comprehensive high school.”

Given that, Cordova announced a new community process to answer three questions: •What would it look like to reopen a comprehensive high school?

•Should the district design a new building or renovate the existing one?

•What types of athletic programming and school clubs does the community want?

More information, including on how to participate, is set to be released next week.

The goal is to have answers

by June, said school board Vice President Jennifer Bacon, who represents far northeast Denver. That way, any new construction projects could be included in a bond the district is planning to ask Denver voters to approve in November.

Currently, the former Montbello High building is home to DCIS Montbello, a district-run middle and high school; Noel Community Arts School, also a district-run middle and high school; and STRIVE Prep – Montbello, a charter middle school.

Ensuring STRIVE Prep – Montbello students have a space is a priority for the district, Cordova wrote in her letter. So is including students affected by the decision in the conversation? And the district wants to make sure middle schools aren’t forgotten; Montbello students will need middle school options, too.

What We’re Working On And Natural Grocers!

D

enver City Council’s Policy Committee, which I chair, is where council members come together to explore policies of interests on a wide range of topics from climate action to zoning to anti-displacement initiatives. Policy committee is unique from our other council committees because the policies that council members bring forth can be in draft form or early stages. It is a place to hear council members’ priorities, to collaborate and receive feedback. We are utilizing this time to look at policy as a body and you can review our policy committee work plan and timeline here: Bit.Ly/2SDQYdo. The policy committee usually meets on the first Wednesday of the month from 12 to 1 p.m. and it is open to the public, as well as televised on Channel 8.

My personal policy efforts for the last year have been focused on how to ensure public health and safety standards for our tenants in rental properties.

Denver currently doesn’t know how many total rentals we have across the city in owneroccupied homes or multifamily units, and this leaves room for unreported substandard living conditions. With that, we are looking into developing a rental registry and licensing program that may require landlords to have units

inspected during a vacancy period for life safety and property maintenance standards.

Another important policy topic that my office is working on is to address wage theft. We are working with numerous trade unions to ensure that workers in the construction industry are being classified correctly and paid fairly for worked wages. Currently, the State of Colorado is the only path to report and investigate lost wages and classification issues through the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. The collection of wages is more challenging in these cases, which is why we are working with our City Attorney’s Office and Auditor’s Office to see if there is more the City of Denver can do to help prevent wage theft and expedite the collection of wages quickly whenever this occurs.

As you may know, one of my top priorities since my first term in 2015 has been expanding District 11’s healthy food and grocer options. This has always been important to me because local accessibility to food in our neighborhoods is essential to our community’s well-being. We are very excited to announce that the much-anticipated opening of Natural Grocers at the corner of Green Valley Ranch Blvd. and Tower Rd. will be on March 25! Let Your Voice Be Heard - VOTE!

hese first couple of weeks of the legislative session have been both hectic and rewarding.

This New Year has already had its trials and tribulations, but I am so thankful for the opportunity to help incite change and take action. The time to do this is now - and always.

As this year is an election year, I’ve been reflecting a lot upon what a rare privilege it is that we have the power and opportunity to use our voices and actually help bring about change. It is important to recognize what a privilege - and duty this is. For many of us, the right to vote and have our voices heard is still relatively new, was hard-won, and is not something to take for granted: •In 1870, the Fifteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution prevented governments from denying citizens the right to vote regard-

less of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

•In 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment prevented voting rights from being denied on the basis of sex. This allowed women to vote – although not all women were able to do so at the time.

•In 1965, the infamous Voting Rights Act was enacted, prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. Barriers such as literacy tests were no longer a requirement when voting, which is a barrier many marginalized peoples faced at the time.

With all the obstacles we have had to overcome in order to vote, it is important to recognize what a meaningful, rare privilege it is to have our voices heard - and to use this power we’ve been given to further justice and equity.

If you are not satisfied with current legislation, VOTE. If you are not happy with who is in office, VOTE. If you feel like you are not being heard, VOTE. If you want to help stop systemic injustice, VOTE. One of the best ways to have your voice heard is through political participation, and voting is an essential part of this. Here are some important dates to remember for this year: •Presidential Primary voting deadline (in-person) – MARCH 3 •Precinct Caucus: vote in person at precinct location to get candidate on primary ballot (and become a delegate to county assembly to support your candidate!) - MARCH 7 •County Assembly: Delegates vote in person to support their candidate’s placement on primary ballot MARCH 28 •Colorado Primary deadline (in person) – JUNE 30

l censo afecta todos los aspectos de la vida en los Estados Unidos y es la base de nuestra democracia. Es un conteo de la población que se lleva a cabo cada 10 años, el próximo censo comienza en marzo del 2020.

Es mucho más que un conteo nacional, el Censo del 2020 será la base de todos las datos de los EEUU para los siguientes 10 años. Dirigentes políticos, negocios, escuelas, atención de salud y otros usan y dependen de esta información para la toma de decisions importantes a la comunidad. articipating in the 2020 Census is easy. Every ten years, every household is asked to fill out the census, that allows the US to know how many people live in our states and local communities. A household is a group of people who may or may not be related, who occupy a single living quarter and consider themselves a unit within that space. In your census, count everyone who usually resides in the household, particularly children ages 0-5, older adults, and relatives or roommates living with you.

Beginning in mid-March, you will receive a letter from the U.S. Census Bureau inviting you to fill out your census through the internet or by phone. You can complete your census from March until June 2020. The U.S. Census Bureau will send you reminders. Paper forms will be sent out April 8 16 to those households that have not yet responded. If you do not respond by mid-May, a census employee will knock on your door to fill out the census with you. However, you can still respond online or by phone in May and June.

The 2020 Census is more than a headcount. It is the foundation for all data in the U.S. for the next ten years. Policy leaders, businesses, schools, healthcare, and others use and rely on census data to make important decisions for our communities. Programs that help our children, our older adults, and families, such as Medicaid, CHIP, SNAP,

schools, highway planning, and repairs all receive funding based on census data. When you complete the Census, you are bringing in money for your community for the next ten years. Also, Colorado may gain a Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives because there are more Coloradans today as compared to 10 years ago when the last census was completed.

The Census is safe and secure. Title 13 of the U.S. Code says census data may only be used to produce statistics. The U.S. Census Bureau cannot release or share any information about individuals or individuals in a household. All federal, state, and local government agencies cannot access individual responses.

Questions on the 2020 Census Form There are nine questions on the census form.

1. Address?

2. How many people live in the household?

3. Do you own or rent your home?

4. Name?

5. Telephone number?

6. Sex? 7. Date of Birth/Age? 8. Hispanic Origin? The Federal Government uses Hispanic, Latino, Spanish Origin interchangeably. They define

someone of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin as someone of Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rica, South or Central American or other Spanish culture descent.

9. Race? On the census form, there is the ability to check multiple boxes to correctly identify your race and ethnic identity. If you see none that you identify as, there are write in options that allow up to 200 characters for race and Hispanic origin.

Questions NOT on the 2020 Census Form The citizenship question will NOT be on the 2020 Census form. There is no question about immigration. You are not asked any other personal information besides name and phone number of everyone residing in the household..

Public Charge What Immigrant Communities Need to Know

he immigrant community, health providers, and front-line service providers

have recently found themselves responding to a flurry of questions around what Public Charge means for immigrant families. As of January 27, the Supreme Court ruled that new testing criteria initiated by the Trump administration through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would be allowed to go forward after multiple federal courts issued injunctions to challenge the new rules and uphold previous test measures. The new rule went into effect February 24, and has created a new level of fear and anxiety for both communities and agencies that provide essential services and support for the health and wellbeing of immigrant and refugee communities.

What does Public Charge Mean? Public Charge is a test that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officers apply to determine whether an applicant will be likely to need federal, state or local assistance. It essentially creates criteria for officers to have discretion on “desirable” immigrants and those they deem less desirable based on education level, age, health conditions, household size, and work history. Immigration officers can then have broad discretion over who is inadmissible. The ruling is troubling in the way that it targets low-income immigrants who are seeking to adjust their status and put themselves on a path to citizenship.

Those that work closely with immigrant communities across the state are now tasked with helping the immigrant community understand what this ruling means to them and their family members.

Here are the most important things the community needs to know right now: •Public charge does not apply to all immigrants. Only those individuals petitioning for a green card through a U.S. Citizen or green card holder or 1-130 application. It does not apply to refugees, asylees, U visa and T Visa holders.

•As before, cash assistance, including TANF and SSI would be grounds for inadmissibility. However, the list has been expanded to include federally funded Medicaid, SNAP (formerly food stamps), and Section 8 Housing assistance.

•The new rule includes use of some state and local cash assistance programs.

What is not included in the Public Charge criteria: •WIC, CHIP, CHP+, and School Lunch assistance programs.

•Energy assistance programs, such as LiHEAP. •Children (under age 21), who have used Medicaid.

•Food pantries, homeless shelters, and Head Start.

•Pregnant women (up to 60 days) who have used Medicaid or emergency Medicaid.

•Family members who have used cash assistance public benefits.

In the coming weeks as the Department of Homeland Security implements the new Public Charge rules, there is a great need to continue to educate the immigrant community on the rules and to combat misinformation among providers.

Organizations like the Center for Health Progress are prepared to meet this challenge and will work closely with the network of health providers, advocates, and community to curb misinformation and in-

creased anxiety among the immigrant community. Community advocates, providers, and public agencies must work together to ensure that low-income immigrant households continue to receive important services like lunch assistance for their children. We will have to be vigilant in how USCIS officers weigh their discretion against the working poor, and work to dismantle the notion that low-income, less educated immigrants are undeserving of a fair chance to adjust their status and get on a path to become contributing members of our communities. a comunidad inmigrante, los proveedores de servicios de salud y los proveedores de servicios de primera línea se han encontrado recientemente respondiendo a una serie de preguntas sobre lo que significa la Carga Pública para las familias inmigrantes. La nueva regla entró en vigencia el 24 de febrero de 2020 y ha creado un nuevo nivel de miedo y ansiedad tanto para las comunidades como para las agencias que brindan servicios y apoyo esenciales para la salud y el bienestar de las comunidades de inmigrantes y refugiados. ¿Qué significa carga pública? Carga pública es una prueba que los funcionarios del Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de los Estados Unidos (USCIS) aplican para determinar si un solicitante probablemente necesitará asistencia federal, estatal o local. Básicamente, crea criterios para que los oficiales tengan discreción sobre los inmigrantes “deseables” y aquellos que consideran menos deseables en función del nivel de educación, la edad, las condiciones de salud, el tamaño del hogar y el historial laboral. Los oficiales de inmigración pueden tener una amplia discreción sobre quién es inadmisible. Local Elementary School Students bring Life to Montbello Soil!

Montbello FreshLo, we worked with Miss Nicole’s third and fourth graders to create a different culture of waste. The kids made drawings of foods common in the cafeteria, glued them to some large sticky note signs, and with old white icing buckets from King Soopers we were ready to start composting food waste rather than putting in the trash. We set up three compost bays in the school garden for the fruit and vegetable waste, then sent all of the meats, cheeses, and processed foods to the City’s compost program. All volunteer and kid-run.

This was how we started making change – by sorting our food waste from the trash.

The result – the kids at Academy 360 have reduced their waste by 99.9 percent and composted over 5,000 pounds (more than two tons) of food waste. By composting instead of sending food waste to the landfill, the students have prevented an enormous amount of carbon dioxide and methane gases from entering the atmosphere. Both of these are potent climate-warming gases.

These second graders with an average age of seven years made a difference at their school and even inspired many adults to start composting at home.

The next step was creating healthy soil from the food waste. It turns out when you capture food waste at a school, there is a significant amount of fruit – specifically whole pieces of apples, pears, and oranges. All of this fruit waste was too much for the school compost. We took another approach and now we are actually putting that fruit waste directly into the ground to

build rich, healthy soil through a trench compost system.

Montbello tends to have sandy soil that is the result of the fact that our land was once at the bottom of the ocean about 92 million years ago. Adding nutrients to the soil is paramount to being able to grow a wide variety of vegetables and fruits.

Funded by Montbello FreshLo Initiative and Steps to Success Montbello, The Living System Project is a food systems effort fueled by Consumption Literacy Project, elementary school students, and guided by the work of Stuart St. Co-op, Garritte Hitchens at Scranton Court Mini Farm, and Michelle Solis.

We are using neighborhood spaces to figure out how to live from our little pieces of land, eat together, share resources, and live richer lives through building community. Along with bringing life to the soil, we are providing opportunity for emerging beekeepers, learning how to care for chickens, and innovating urban farming. as oído hablar de que la Academia 360 empezo un program de botar casi cero (Nearly Zero) basura? El año pasado, en un proyecto financiado por el Consejo de Defensa

de Recursos Naturales y Montbello FreshLo, trabajamos con los alumnos de tercer y cuarto grado de la Señorita Nicole para crear una cultura diferente sobre la basura. Los niños hicieron dibujos de los alimentos comunes en la cafetería, los pegaron a unos grandes carteles de notas adhesivas, y con los viejos cubos de hielo blanco de King Soopers, estábamos listos para comenzar a compostar los desperdicios de alimentos en lugar de tirarlos a la basura.

Women’s History Month – A Salute to Education Leaders in FNE March is Women’s History Month. We celebrate the many women who have made and do make our schools what they are today. Leadership matters and Faithbridge salutes these leaders, along with many others, who serve and lead well in our community for our children.

We salute Principal Dr. Brandi Chin, leader of DSST-Noel, the city’s top middle school, birthed from an intentional community design process and a daily commitment to pursue excellence.

We salute Principal Kim Grayson, leader of Dr. MLK Early College, a loving and revolutionary school where students are known, celebrated, and are courageously confronting structural racism to create a new reality.

We salute Principal Elisha Roberts, leader of Strive Prep RISE, a place where student debaters raise their voices with confidence, and collaborations with community are authentic to open doors of opportunity for every student.

We salute Principal Rhonda Juett, leader of Noel Community Arts School (NCAS), a school celebrating and displaying the brilliance of our students through the arts while advocating fiercely for equity and for resources.

Denver’s #1 School: More Than the Metrics

By Alana Raybon When a sixth-grade science teacher left our school last fall for active duty, a packed room of

sixth and seventh graders gave him a tearful military sendoff.

“He did so much to help me last year,” said one student, a former member of his advisory group.

These words of gratitude were echoed by dozens of students.

Watching the emotion that day, I recognized how much strong student-teacher regard contributes to our school’s notable academic achievements. In 2019, DSST Middle School @ Noel– where 93 percent are students of color, and 73 percent receive free and reduced lunch – became the #1 middle school in Denver on Denver Public Schools’ School Performance Framework (SPF), the report card that that evaluates every school’s yearly performance metrics.

In both English and Math, our school scored #1 for student growth among DPS middle schools. We also earned “exceeds” status in the categories of student proficiency and reduction of academic gaps. Led by founding School Director Dr. Brandi Chin, our school’s leaders and teachers focus intently on analyzing and responding to academic data, aligned with a commitment to excellent academic planning.

Yet, intangible assets also contribute significantly to our school’s performance. As our school’s founding Director of Curriculum and Instruction, I’ve observed three notable factors contributing to our #1 status.

School Culture Inclusion and support for all students are bedrock priorities.

Our staff works tirelessly to create a conducive, safe learning environment where all students are deeply known as an individual. Not only do our teachers spend time getting to know each student and build their trust, but they also participate in a 12-week intensive workshop series on classroom

OPINION EDITORIAL - OPINIÓN EDITORIAL or behaviors. As they swapped stories, a shared sense of ownership of each student’s success was palpable.

Combined, these intangibles inspire our team to push past the notion that a school’s achievements are denoted only by state assessment performance. Focusing on culture, coaching & feedback, and collaboration, while emphasizing excellent academics and data-driven instruction, promote an environment that shifts metrics but, more than all, student lives.Y culture, practicing strategies that manage classroom behaviors, encourage classroom engagement and develop students’ sense of self accountability. All of these tools create the equitable learning environment this is key to our school’s success.

Coaching and Feedback Weekly coaching is universally applied to all staff.

Teachers receive coaching from an administrator, who receives coaching from the School Director. Even the School Director is coached by a dedicated Director of Schools. With coaching comes a cycle of feedback and constant improvement, resulting in immediate improvements to teaching practices.

Mayor Michael B. Hancock and Denver Public Schools (DPS) Superintendent Susana Cordova today announced the city will be matching the district’s $100,000 commitment – for a total of $200,000 – in new microgrant funding to engage community partners in the effort to help end youth violence in Denver.

The city will also be waiving event fees for funded programs that may occur in city facilities, including recreation centers and parks.

“Keeping all of Denver’s young people healthy and safe is one of our most important duties as a school district and as a city. With summer quickly approaching, we have an opportunity to get resources out into the community to support enhanced programming in partnership with Denver Public Schools,” Mayor Hancock said.

“This is one more step in the city’s commitment to not only reduce youth violence, but enrich the lives our young people.”

“We knew we could count on the city to join us in funding the solutions that will help put an end to youth violence,” said Superintendent Cordova. “This matched funding expands our scope and gets us closer to creating the safe communities our youth deserve.”

The release of the microgrants is done in partnership with DPS, which recently released the Application for

Extra-Curricular, Well-Being, or Academic Opportunities for Students grant which will provide additional funding to schools to enhance or expand school-based services through

the end of the 2019-20 school year.

Through their program, teachers and principals could apply for up to $5,000 to support youth programming. Denver’s microgrants will be funded through the Department of Public Safety Youth Programs to boost summer engagement services for youth. Teachers, principals, community organizations and community members can apply for up to $10,000 from Denver’s Public Safety Youth Programs to offer safe and healthy activities for students. DPS and Denver are seeking to fund afterschool programs, pop-up community events, additional support staff, extracurricular educational opportunities, trips to explore the great outdoors and other activities to promote safe and healthy youth development.

“I was the beneficiary of a micro grant when I was a DPS student, and I believe in the power of positive community experiences to shape young people. We are happy to partner with DPS in this effort,” said Murphy Robinson, interim Executive Director of Public Safety.

The application period to apply for a Public Safety Youth Programs grant is March 1–27, and funds must be used to support direct program services for youth ages 12-18 during May 15–August 31. To learn more about grants and to apply,

In an effort to address concerns from residents, including youth, Mayor Hancock convened the Youth Violence Prevention Action Table (YVPAT) with the purpose of aligning city efforts to enhance existing youth violence prevention strategies and identify additional strategies to reduce levels of youth violence. Through following a public health approach to addressing youth violence, this microgrant partnership is the next actionable item resulting from the YVPAT’s work.Y

Denver Department of Public Health & Environment Takes Next Step to Help Feed Hungry Kids The Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE) is one step closer to feeding hungry children in our city through the Healthy Food for Denver’s Kids (HFDK) program.

Voters approved the initiative in November 2018 to establish a sales tax to help feed the one in five kids in Denver who doesn’t have enough to eat each year. Starting in January 2019, the ordinance increased sales tax by 0.08 percent, which amounts to less than a penny for every $10

spent. The tax adds up to about $11 million a year over 10 years of the program or about $110 million.

Those funds will soon be distributed through competitive grants to nonprofits and local government agencies that feed and educate children about food and nutrition.

Today, DDPHE is requesting eligible organizations submit their ideas on how to best improve children’s access to healthy foods and food-based education and skills, like cooking and gardening.

To be eligible to apply, an organization must be: A non-profit whose primary purpose is to provide: •healthy meals/snacks for Denver youth under 18 years of age; •hands-on experiential education and public health programs associated with farming, gardening, cooking, nutrition, home economics and healthy eating; or •preferential procurement of food from Colorado farms, ranches and food manufacturing businesses—if they are less than 10 percent more expensive than comparable out-ofstate foods; or An agency of local government, including Denver Public Schools that has programs directly furthering the primary purposes listed above.

Eligible organizations can begin applying Thursday, February 13.

Copies of the application will be available in Spanish. Proposals will be reviewed and selected by the HFDK Commission and should clearly demonstrate an effective, fiscally responsible program that meets HFDK goals. Proposals should also include community engagement and show diversity, equity, and inclusion across all aspects of the program.

One in 10 Coloradans struggle with hunger, not always having enough money to buy food. And in Denver, nearly one in six households (one in five children) experience food insecurity or hunger.

Studies show children who go hungry have a harder time paying attention in school. They may also suffer from health conditions like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.Y

RESOURCES FOR RESIDENTS - RECURSOS PARA RESIDENTES Central 70 Project Update – Crews prepare for partial demolition of I-70 Bridge over Brighton Blvd.

Brighton Boulevard will soon serve as the gateway into the future lowered section of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Central 70 Project. At Brighton Boulevard, the interstate will gradually start to descend approximately 30 feet, which will continue to Colorado Boulevard.

Although I-70 will still run above Brighton Boulevard in the final configuration, the bridge and interchange will need to be reconstructed to accommodate additional lanes on I-70, wider shoulders and drainage improvements. Over the past year, crews have been working to lower the roadway several feet and realign on- and off-ramps.

As part of this work, crews will demolish a portion of the I-70 Bridge over Brighton Boulevard as soon as Feb. 21, requiring a full closure of Brighton Boulevard under I-70. Mo-

torists will use Washington Street or Steele/Vasquez as an alternate route.

As with all I-70 bridges on the Central 70 Project, only a portion of the bridge can be removed at a time, since three lanes in each direction must be maintained during peak travel times. All I-70 traffic lanes were recently shifted south to allow for the north side of the bridge to be demolished and rebuilt.

During the demolition, crews will use excavators to safely remove the northern portion of the bridge piecemeal. Debris will be sorted/crushed and then recycled on other parts of the Project or taken to an off-site facility for reuse.

Traffic will remain in the current configuration on I-70 for an extended period until the next phase, when lanes will shift to the north while the south side of the bridge is removed. In the meantime, crews continue work on the Brighton roadway under I-70 and realignment of on- and off-ramps. To receive construction updates on your phone, text Central70 to 77948.Y

By Shakira Dodson, class representative from the CPA Student Council The Collegiate Prep Academy Culture Expo was hosted on Thursday, January 23, 2020. This event was organized for students, staff, and community members to come and showcase their cultures.

The mission of the Culture Expo is for the community to come together and learn more about each other’s backgrounds outside of school hours on a more personal level. The event was a celebration of the rich, diverse cultures present in the Montbello neighborhood.

Students here at Collegiate Preparatory Academy are learning to be inspired by this event to be their most authentic self and to not be afraid of it. We are here to lift one another up and bring the community in from outside the school to become more united.

There was a wide array of food and beverage samples from these different cultures as well as artifacts and informational materials.

The highlight of the evening was a traditional dance performance from a CPA student of Oglala Lakota and Dine/Navajo tribal heritage.Y
