Montbello Community Calendar to Launch in December In 2017, a community planning process that included conversations through a variety of means with over 2500 residents revealed that a major deficit in the community was the lack of a communication platform to keep folks abreast of Montbello news and happenings. The MUSE resulted from this conversation and has since delivered 19 issues in English and Spanish and reached, on average, 19,000 residents in 80239 and 80249 every other month through online access and/or actual paper distribution.

Several months ago, in a meeting of community organizations, schools, churches, etc. participants identified a pressing need to have a community calendar that would be accessible by anyone. Montbello Organizing Committee (MOC) took on that challenge and will release the Montbello Community Calendar December 1st. All organizations and residents will be able to contribute to and access this community resource. The calendar will be reachable at montbellocalendar.org and will be powered by, managed, and updated regularly by MOC. And, speaking of calendars. My calendar lets me know that 2019 is quickly drawing to a close. In this season of thankfulness, I am grateful for the opportunity to report the good news about Montbello. The people and organizations of this neighborhood are remarkable and it is a joy and a privilege to tell so many of their stories. I am also grateful to the Foundations – Kresge Foundation, Colorado Health Foundation, the Denver Foundation, Rose Foundation, RootEd, and the Gates Foundation – who fund the work of Montbello Organizing Committee to do the work that we do on behalf of the Montbello community.

Best wishes for a safe and joyful end to 2019 and here’s to a productive and fulfilling 2020 for all of us.

Montbello – A Community Working Together

From its inception, Mont-

bello has been a community that worked together. Since 1966 when Montbello was created, community involvement was key to getting needed services in the neighborhood.

Montbello’s Citizen’s Committee (MCC) — the first neighborhood organization in the community — worked to get transportation, recreation facilities, schools, and police protection for residents. Working together, the community pushed for neighborhood schools so that Denver Public Schools opened the first public schools in the neighborhood in 1973 – John H. Amesse and Barney Ford Elementary schools. Montbello High School opened in 1980.

While the MCC no longer exists, other resident organizations formed. For many years Far Northeast Neighborhoods (FNN) represented Montbello as the registered neighborhood organization (RNO). More recently several other groups have joined the team of RNOs and resident-led nonprofits working on behalf of the community. These include: •Montbello 2020 •Montbello Neighborhood

nonprofits, schools, and several City agencies are working together to increase safe, interesting, and usable walking and biking opportunities in the heart of Montbello’s residential area. Together these efforts have created a viable food access system, installed art in the neighborhood’s channel system, increased lighting, and helped ensured safer street crossings at some of the most dangerous intersections. An outcome of this project has also been the creation of signage to be installed in 2020 at selected points along the loop that will identify historic events and significant landmarks. Admire The Community signs will also feature the many organizations that have worked together to ensure this community gets the resources and services and recognition it needs and deserves.

A most timely way that the community is working together is the movement to ensure that everyone who lives in Montbello is counted in the 2020 Census. Under Montbello 2020’s leadership the Montbello Resident’s Collaborative has formed. This Collaborative group is comprised of multi-racial organizations, local businesses, schools, faith-based organizations,

Improvement Association •Montbello Organizing Committee •Northeast Denver Friends and Neighbors (NEDFANS) •Northern Corridor Coalition of United Residents (OCCUR) •Vecinos de Montbello These neighborhood groups and community members, with others, continue efforts to get and grow equitable services and opportunities related to education, health, jobs, transportation, food access, recreation, affordable housing, and community improvements.

An excellent example of how Montbello works together on behalf of the community is the recent meeting with the new CEO of The Denver Foundation. At the request of the foundation, more than twenty Montbello organization representatives met with Javier Alberto Soto to discuss needs and assets in the Montbello neighborhood. Amazingly these representatives spoke with virtually one voice about the strengths of this neighborhood and the ways in which the Foundation can support the efforts of the community nonprofit organizations.

health and local government, community groups, community leaders, and immigrants and refugees. Collectively, they will provide education and encouragement to every resident to complete the 2020 Census.

Finally, one of the ways the Montbello Community comes together is through the co-hosting of community festivals, resource fairs, and celebrations.

One might underestimate the value of these events and play it off as “just fun.” However, thousands of people experience fun with their families and access a myriad of community resources at these events.

There is no greater opportunity for diverse residents to engage with their neighbors and create a sense of shared identity than to share food and participate in fun and physical activity.

Neighborhood organizations work hard at ensuring that these events are coordinated so that they do not overlap.

After Years As A Food Desert, Montbello Planning CommunityOwned Grocery Store

By Alexandra Lewis 9NEWS Anchor Four years ago, Montbello’s only grocery store closed its doors, creating one of Denver’s starkest food deserts. On Montbello’s main drag, Peoria Street, you’ll find dozens of fast food restaurants. What you won’t find is a grocery store for four miles. The next one is nearly eight miles away.

So, community advocates have been making progress on an ambitious plan to open an independent, communityowned grocery store to bring healthy options back to residents.

Four years ago, a Safeway located in Montbello closed its doors. Now, some who live in the neighborhood said the Family Dollar on Peoria is one of Montbello’s best options for groceries.

“For folks that live nearby, they live in apartments and many don’t have access to cars,” Angelle Fouther, the vice president of the Montbello Organizing Committee (MOC) said. “And so, it’s a quick fix and that’s what they end up feeding their families. It’s something, but it’s not enough.”

A group of concerned neighbors formed the MOC in 2014, dedicating themselves to getting healthy options to their community of 35,000. “One out of two children in the community experiences food inse-

curity. Some may only get one or two meals a day based on their family’s eligibility for free and reduced lunches,” Executive Director of Montbello Organizing Committee and Project Director for the FreshLo Initiative, Donna Garnett added.

MOC is working on bringing a full-fledged grocery store back to their community. The group recently won a $600,000 bid for a former RTD Park-NRide location. After one more round of environmental testing, the land will officially be theirs.

They are currently appealing to private investors and applying for tax credits and government grants to get the store built. They said they are estimating they will need about $30 million. When the site is complete, it will not only be a grocery store, but also a cultural hub - including a theater, meeting rooms, retail space for local entrepreneurs, and 120 units of affordable housing.

The goal is to open the HUB sometime in 2021/2022.Y

Steps to Success is Hiring Montbello Youth DENVER — Seeking to infuse more youth voice into its youth violence prevention efforts, Steps to Success is hiring Montbello youth for three different positions: Media Campaign Developers, Steps to Success Ambassadors, and a Youth Leader.

Steps to Success has been operating since 2011 to reduce violence against youth in Montbello by implementing prevention programs and strategies. One of the strategies is a media campaign to build youth pride and attachment to the Montbello community. Research shows that when youth report low attachment to their neighborhood, there is a higher risk for perpetration of violence.

Middle-school and highschool age Media Campaign Developers will work alongside marketing and media professionals to develop and implement the media campaign

over the course of 2020 and 2021. Developers will work in 12-week blocks to develop creative content for the campaign, and may have the option to continue from one block to the next after demonstrating success. Let’s Talk Housing

Housing is a critical component of health, opportunity, and community engagement. Not having affordable housing or experiencing housing instability affects many aspects of our community such as food access, transportation and mobility, seniors, aging in place, and so much more.

That is why in 2016, the District 11 Council Office brought together Montbello neighborhood organization leaders and community experts and formed an organization called the Montbello Leadership Cabinet, which meets to discuss and explore tactics to address impending gentrification and involuntary displacement. By creating opportunities for community education, outreach, and advocacy around neighborhood resources, we created Montbello Speaks; a speakers’ forum to address housing and other issues from all perspectives.

It is exciting to see the work

of the Montbello Leadership Cabinet and their many accomplishments over the last three years. On Saturday, October 19, we held our 3rd Montbello Speaks series called Montbello Speaks: Fall Housing Event.

This event was an interactive and informational workshop that discussed important topics such as aging in place, veteran support, home-ownership, renting, and affordable housing.

We had 30 experts from city agencies, community organizations, and the real estate and financial sectors connecting residents directly with services and resources needed.

Alongside the Cabinet’s efforts, the District 11 Council Office is focused on promoting equity and advancing families in our neighborhoods through programs and initiatives such as: The Expansion of Denver’s Tax Rebate programs to include families with children – This rebate program serves renters, seniors and persons with disabilities, and now includes families with children at the 40% of Denver’s Average Median Income (AMI).

The Homeowners Resource Guide insert in Annual Property Tax Bills – This insert was first mailed last year in English and Spanish to help residents navigate city resources associated with housing cost burdens and will continue to be sent every year.

Financial Empowerment Center – Located at the Arie P. Taylor Building (4685 Peoria St., Suite #251, Denver 80239), this Center offers free, one-on-one financial coaching in English and Spanish to address your unique financial circumstances.

This year, I am working on a Rental Registry and Licensure ordinance. Denver currently does not have a licensing program and the responsibility to report substandard housing conditions and lease violations rests on the renter. This overburdens the renter in a system that is set up to be supportive of landlords. That’s where rental registration and licensing programs become essential tools to strengthen tenants’ rights within the community and to protect them from exploitative landlords. In strained housing markets, these tools can be used by cities and municipalities to increase the standard of living.

Every organization and agency within the city play a vital role in building healthy communities. They ensure our seniors and families have the tools to succeed. My office has created a District 11 Stakeholders guide with city organizations and non-profits that is constantly updated. Hablemos sobre la Vivienda Por La Concejal Stacie Gilmore, Distrito 11 La vivienda es un componente crítico de la salud, las oportunidades y el enfoque comunitario. No tener una vivienda asequible o pasar por una época de inestabilidad afecta muchos aspectos de nuestra comunidad como el acceso a los alimentos, la transportación y movilidad, y hasta puede impedir que personas de mayor edad no puedan envejecer en su hogar.

Es por esto que, en el 2016, la Oficina del Distrito 11 reunió a líderes de varias organizaciones de Montbello y otros expertos en nuestra comunidad para formar la organización llamada Montbello Leadership Cabinet (Gabinete de Liderazgo de Montbello). Este Gabinete se reunió en varias ocasiones para discutir y explorar las tácticas para hablar sobre la gentrificación inminente y el desplazamiento involuntario de nuestras comunidades. Al crear oportunidades para la educación comunitaria, extensión de ayuda y apoyo a la comunidad, nació la serie de eventos “Habla Montbello,” que busca solucionar al tema de la vivienda desde todas las perspectivas.

Es emocionante ver el trabajo que ha logrado el Gabinete en estos últimos tres años.

El sábado 19 de octubre tuvimos nuestra tercera serie de “Habla Montbello” titulada Habla Montbello: Evento de Vivienda. Este evento consistió de un taller interactivo e infor-

El evento contó con la participación de 30 expertos de varias agencias, organizaciones comunitarias, y de los sectores de bienes raíces y financiero. Estos expertos ayudaron a los residentes directamente con los servicios y recursos que necesitaban.

Junto al esfuerzo del Gabinete, la Oficina del Distrito 11 continúa enfocada en promover la equidad y el avance de las familias de nuestras comunidades a través de programas e iniciativas como: La Expansión del Programa de Alivio de Impuestos de Propiedad de Denver para incluir a familias con niños – Este programa de alivio es para per-

sonas que alquilan, personas mayores y personas discapacitadas, y ahora ha sido extendido para incluir a familias con niños con un 40% de AMI (“Area Median Income” o Ingreso Media del Área).

La Guía de Recursos para los Dueños de Casas incluida en la Factura de Impuestos Anuales a la Propiedad (“Annual Property Tax Bills”) – Esta guía se envió por primera vez el año pasado en inglés y español para ayudar a los residentes a navegar los recursos de la ciudad asociados con la carga del costo de vivienda. La guía se enviará nuevamente cada año.

Centro Financiero de Empoderamiento (“Financial Empowerment Center”) – Ubicado en el Edificio Arie P. Taylor (4685 Calle Peoria, Suite 251, Denver 80239), este Centro

ofrece educación individual financiera gratis en inglés y español para ayudarle a resolver sus circunstancias únicas financieras.

Este año, estoy trabajando en una ordenanza para el Registro de Alquileres y Licencias.

La ciudad de Denver actualmente no tiene un programa de licencias y la responsabilidad de reportar las condiciones inferiores de vivienda y violaciones al contrato de alquiler cae sobre el inquilino. Esto sobrecarga al inquilino en un sistema que hoy apoya al arrendador. During the down time of the General Assembly is a good time to hear from and see for myself where my attention as a State Representative must be focused. The calendar has been full of powerful engagements and ongoing opportunities to hear the voices and ideas of our community on a number of issues. Here are some of the is-

sues I have worked on with others during the “off-season.”

Education - I was able to spend time at one of the gems in our community, Maxwell Elementary School, to speak with 2nd – 5th graders. Principal Nivan Khosravi and his team are doing an amazing job at Maxwell. I had to be on my toes as some of our youngest constituents asked me thoughtful questions about my work and about how my work is making things better for their future. No matter the grade, these students were confident in their voices and unafraid to ask the tough questions. I also appreciate Principal Khosravi’s advocacy for us to be thinking about supporting Early Childhood Education (ECE) within our community. We know that we now have full-day kindergarten but ECE is equally as important.

I also traveled to Adams State University in Alamosa with Dr. Angie Paccione, Executive Director of Colorado Department of Higher Education, to learn how to make state college access more affordable and to improve programming.

We also talked about increasing awareness of state college opportunities for students in HD7. These two visits reminded me that we have to work together to create a Birth through College system that is about everyone thriving! The brilliance that I saw at Maxwell and the innovation I saw at Adams State University assures me that we can!

Safety – I spent time with Denver Police Department (DPD) discussing collective solutions to keep our community safe. Sadly, we know that there has been an uptick in violence in our community as

well as in other Denver neighborhoods. We have had too many families mourning the loss of their children because of violence. I am glad that DPD, DPS, Denver City Council, and many others are working together to make sure that our children and every block of the community is safe.

Affordable Housing - Our House District 7 office is working with the City of Denver and the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA) to create more affordable housing units like the one attached at East Range on 59th and Dunkirk in Green Valley Ranch. Our great city and state must be a place where people can live, work, and play. We are glad to see the “out-of-the box thinking at East Range.

On the Horizon - Our legislative office team is looking forward to participating in the annual Daddy Bruce Thanksgiving Outreach with FaithBridge to affirm our unwavering commitment to working together to serve our community. New Denver Foundation CEO Tours Montbello

On a crisp fall day in Oc-

tober, Montbello community leaders welcomed a visit from Javier Alberto Soto, the newly appointed President and CEO of The Denver Foundation.

Just two weeks into his new position, Javier embarked on the first in a series of community bike tours, designed to introduce the Miami native to Denver, one neighborhood at a time.

Javier’s first outing was a 25-mile roundtrip ride from Cherry Creek through Congress Park, Hale, Montclair, South Park Hill, East Colfax, Stapleton, Montbello, North Park Hill, and City Park. He made one stop, at the Northfield Community Center, where he met with leaders of the Montbello Organizing Committee and other com-

munity groups. From The Denver Foundation, Javier was joined by Dace West, Vice President of Community Impact, and David Portillo, who leads the Strengthening Neighborhoods grants and capacitybuilding program.

The wide-ranging discussion touched on specific challenges experienced by Montbello residents in a moment of rapid change, growth, and gentrification. Javier explained that his goal was to listen, form relationships, and build an understanding of the complex web of issues and opportunities faced by people in neighborhoods across Metro Denver.

The group expressed gratitude to Javier for the visit,

which they took as a good sign of his intent to continue and deepen The Denver Foundation’s longstanding engagement with the Montbello area. “The Denver Foundation has been there with us since the beginning, and we know they will be with us in the future,� said Khadija Haynes. “They are there not just when and where we need them, but how we need them, and that is very important.�

Javier plans to continue his bike listening tour through November and again in the spring; his goal is to ride through each of Denver’s more than 70 neighborhoods, with stops along the way to meet with key constituents. What he sees, hears, and learns will inform his understanding of our City as well as his role as the leader of the largest and most experienced community foundation in Colorado.

I remember growing up

playing basketball at multiple recreation centers and parks across the metro area. It didn’t matter where we were playing, Park Hill, Montbello, Whittier, Washington Park, Globeville, or even in Aurora, there was always a team that seemed to be dominating the court. Team after team would challenge them, and team after team would lose. I remember sitting at a recreation center after a loss, simply watching. I watched where the dominating team was strong and equally watched where they were weak. I was tired of them dominating the court and I found out that I was not alone. Others were taking notes too.

The goal was to pull together people with a shared frustration with losing, people who had known the pain of loss, but had not lost the hunger to win. We needed people, because of the sting of losing, who were committed to collaborating in ways that had not been the norm, because we were on “different teams.” We had to pull together height, shooting ability, defensive quickness, toughness in the paint, basketball IQ, stamina, strategy, and more. We had to operate as a new team. We had been coming week after week, month after month, losing to

the the same dominant team, and the only way we were going to win was to do differently together. It took us some time, but eventually, we came together, and we won. It changed everything!

We have concluded that about the state of education in our communities across the state of Colorado. The only way our children are going to win is if we do differently together! In education, the same children are left out, looked over, and not prepared to fully live their promise. That insanity cycle has to be broken if we want the violence of educational mediocrity to end and a desired reality where 100% of children are graduating from a high-quality high school, ready for the choice of college, without remediation to become our norm. We have to do differently together!

At the “Is School Choice the Black Choice” event with Roland Martin in October, FaithBridge committed to convening community partners around next steps to immediately improve the education of Black children in Colorado, and therefore all children. The convening series, that will take us through July 2020, is focused on driving transformation with community

standstanding on common ground that will yield: •Community standards for high-quality schools in our communities, •Applications for new highquality schools to open in our communities that have been co-created and/or are supported by community, •Recommendations for current schools that need immediate turnaround/community interventions and supports to become the high-quality schools that our children need them to be now.

This community CAR, that runs on the wheels of our collaboration, is on the move because we recognize that time is limited and not on our side.

This community CAR is built to travel, to liberate children and communities across our state.

No importaba dónde estábamos jugando, Park Hill, Montbello, Whittier, Washington Park, Globeville, o incluso en Aurora, siempre había un equipo que parecía estar dominando la cancha. Hemos concluido esto sobre el estado de la educación en nuestras comunidades en todo el estado de Colorado. ¡La única forma en que nuestros hijos van a ganar es si lo hacemos juntos de manera diferente! Montbello Champion Dianne Cooks Honored by CBWPA

ontbello’s own Dianne Cooks was recently honored for her exemplary service in our African-American community by Colorado Black Women for Political Action (CBWPA) at their annual Tribute to Black Women luncheon. Dianne’s work in the community is indeed worthy of mention and honor.

Newer Montbello residents most readily know Dianne for the work she has done over the past 13 years as the co-founder and Executive Director of Families Against Violent Acts (FAVA). We see her deep and abiding faith and church work with Now Faith Christian Center Church and her commitment to bringing our community together to emphasize the need for healing and compassion through her annual community celebration Heal The Hood Community Resource Fair. So how did this community treasure come to be such a standout in our community? This is her story.

Dianne is a native-born Denverite and grew up in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood, the second eldest of six siblings. As a youngster, she developed a passion for leading and helping others. When the children in her neighbor-

hood gathered to play, they generally played “school” and Dianne was always the “teacher.” At home, she was responsible for helping to raise her younger siblings and she learned how to “cook, shop, and pay bills very young.”

Cooking was an important part of her family’s Mississippi roots and she is known for her fried chicken, dressing, and cakes.

Her passion for leading and helping led her to become a medical assistant after graduating from Manual High School. She discovered she was good at taking care of people and studied to become an LPN. In caring for sick people, Dianne realized her very special skill for detecting and understanding when a person’s sickness was not just physical, that often medicine alone could not make a person well, but that access to food, counseling and other resources were equally necessary for

well-being. So, she switched careers and went back to school to become a social worker.

Dianne worked as a Denver Public Schools social worker for more than 20 years. She started at Whitter, Smith, and Phillips elementary schools in Five Points and Park Hill, rotating between schools serving students and their families. In 1987, Dianne also became a business owner, becoming the proprietor of “Miss D’s Dry Cleaners” on the corner of 30th and Peoria. Commuting between the schools and her business was difficult, so Dianne made the choice to move to Montbello to be closer to her business. She requested that DPS assign her to schools in her new neighborhood and was assigned to Barney Ford, John Amesse, Oakland, Escalante Biggs, and the former Montbello High School. So many children and families in our community have benefited

from Dianne Cooks’ deep care and extensive resource network.

Her life changed in 2005 when her son was an innocent victim of a gang-related shooting. He was on his way home when he was shot three times while stopped at a traffic light, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Her son was the victim of gang initiation activity. Seeking solace and comfort in her church, Dianne and four other mothers sharing similar stories of victimization began meeting to talk through their grief and find ways to help build community to prevent others from being victimized.

In 2007, Denver Broncos player, Darrent Williams, became an innocent victim of gang violence. Dianne and her colleagues were outraged that Derrent’s story was being sensationalized in the media while the dozens of other mothers’ and families’ stories were not being told. With the support and encouragement from Now Faith’s leader, Pastor Leon Emerson, FAVA was born and began holding weekly support meetings for grieving family members.

Through the years the group expanded to include parents and family members of those on the other side of the gun trigger – families of the shooters. Many believed that including families from both sides would not work. But Dianne held strong in her belief that “pain is pain.” The loss of a loved one is the same regardless of which side of the trigger your family is on.

When asked what the community might give back, she wishes for “a building; a place where people can come and share their stories. Kids and

It Takes More Than Speeding Tickets Guest Commentary by

E

very day, I do my best to take a walk along the streets of Montbello. I grew up here and still live here, so for many years, I have seen and experienced how difficult it can be to simply take a walk in my neighborhood. And I don’t walk alone. I walk with my friends and family. I walk with young ones who want to go play in the park. I walk with seniors who want to get exercise and socialize. I walk with neighbors with disabilities who sometimes have to travel in the street instead of the sidewalks that aren’t wide enough for them to use. We have to deal with wide roads, narrow sidewalks, and unsafe crossing situations that prevent many Montbello residents from walking to the park, to the bus, to school, or to the neighbor’s house.

That’s why for the last few years, I have been working hard to bring attention to the pedestrian safety issues in Montbello as one of the leaders of Montbello 2020 and Montbello Walks. Last year, my fellow community advocates and I were excited and thankful to participate in the Vision Zero

Community Program with the City & County of Denver and WalkDenver. We decided to focus on the Andrews & Tulsa intersection at the entrance to Melvin F. Silverman Park. This beautiful park is a great space where our community can gather and spend time outdoors but because of high speeds on Andrews, it can be scary to try and cross the street on foot or on bike. With the help of WalkDenver and Councilwoman Gilmore, we were able to set up a temporary traffic calming demonstration at the intersection last June. With temporary crosswalks, more pedestrian space, a pop-up traffic circle, and flaggers, we were so happy to see that drivers would slow down and yield to pedestrians as they went through the intersection.

Since the demonstration, the City has taken a few steps to address our concerns. Shortly after our event, the Denver Police Department issued over 700 speeding tickets to drivers on Andrews. I collaborate with DPD regularly and know how hard they work to keep our community safe. But the high number of tickets issued, which can be burdensome for some of our community members to pay off, demonstrates that speeding on Andrews is a chronic problem that must be addressed through design changes, not just enforcement.

That’s why I was so happy to see that Denver Public Works installed new crosswalks and pedestrian signage across Andrews but also disappointed that they were not added to both sides of the intersection. And without stop signs, drivers will still not be likely to slow down or yield to people trying to cross. Unlike major streets like Peoria, streets like Andrews and Tulsa

do not need major redesigns to improve safety. Crosswalks, stop signs, and simple traffic calming techniques that are quicker and less expensive to implement would make a big difference toward altering driver behavior and improving safety. I fully believe in the City’s Vision Zero goal and it is my hope that through this initiative, they will listen to our concerns and work with us on changes that would ensure our basic right to walk safely and conveniently through our community. Montbello Organizations Win National Grant Awards DENVER – Kresge Foundation, located in Detroit, Michigan, recently announced funding awards to twenty-two FreshLo organizations around the country and Montbello Organizing Committee (MOC) was one of those recipients.

The Montbello FreshLo Initiative is a comprehensive community economic development program. With deep involvement from residents, the project is designed to create places in the community that promote cultural heritage, artistic expression, animate public and private spaces, rejuvenate structures and streetscapes while improving local business viability and public safety and bringing diverse peoples together. Collectively, these places will improve access to healthy, affordable food for all residents and increase physical activity within a vibrant cultural context.

Colorado Black Arts Movement (CBAM) – a Montbello FreshLo partner – recently received notification of winning a National Endowment for the Arts award to create a sculpture of one of the community’s most beloved teachers. Marie L. Greenwood, who is 107 years old, was Denver’s first African-American teacher to earn tenure in Denver Public Schools in 1938, thus opening the door to diversity in the District. The bronze piece will be created by Denver artist, Ed Dwight. Mr. Dwight was the

first African-American astronaut selected for the U.S. space program and has crafted more than 120 memorials, monuments, and public art installations, as well as some 18,000 gallery sculptures ranging from statues of Martin Luther King to Hank Aaron in full homerun swing at the Braves Stadium in Atlanta to several renderings of Harriet Tubman

and the underground railroad.

He is the creator of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Denver’s City park.

The bronze piece will be installed on the grounds of Mrs. Greenwood’s namesake, Marie L. Greenwood Academy and will be seen by thousands of residents as they enjoy the FreshLo Walkable Loop.Y

Colorful Col Colorful orful Stories Need To Be Seen, and Heard Denver Urban Spectrum is seeking nominations for the 2nd annual “Colorful Stories, See Me Hear Me” luncheon to be held in 2020.

These stories of tribulation, courage and triumphwill be presented through video, conversation and written profiles, and will highlight individuals who have overcome obstacles, adversity and tragedy, who are now living successful and meaningful lives.

In 2018, five courageous women were featured and shared their stories including Carlotta Walls LaNier, the youngest of the Little Rock Nine; Marie Phason, whose 6-year old son, Broderick Bell, was hit by a random gunshot and survived; Denver playwright and actress, Rhonda Jackson, who was diagnosed with Lupus in 1994; Senator Rhonda Fields, whose son and fiancé were murdered; and Ruth Boyd, an 80-year old mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was beaten to death in her home. She was the mother of DUS publisher, Rosalind “Bee” Harris.

At this powerful event, Denver Urban Spectrum shared a message about overcoming tribulation with courage and personal conviction, bringing light to issues that still need a better response and solutions from the community. Attendees learned up close and personal how these women persevered through videos and a panel discussion.

A World of Our Own Is Still In My Mind Editor: The snow was falling and the streets were quiet. Our neighbor’s 1928 Chevy Sedan was parked across the street where it always was. Our neighbor’s house next door had the walks shoveled like they always were. I would later in the day go across the street and ask if he could use some help with shoveling his walks.

Three doors down the old farm house was covered in snow like it had not changed in 70 years, but two doors down were the Japanese neighbors who had a house kept so perfect that it was a marvel just to walk by. Going inside was separate treat. Also, across the street was the duplex looking so far way behind a hedge like

a secret always waiting to be discovered. Behind us was the biggest house on the block where here were seven children of all ages, but some of them were already so old they seemed like adults. Across the street and two doors down was a house that always looked like it was just built. It was kept so perfect.

The five kids in our house was always a beehive of activity and the snow only added to the sense of self-contained activity. We would get the kids next door, and the kids two doors down from across the street and we would create a world of our own. We would pretend and we would create. We would challenge our personalities to find out how to work the next activity. We always found an activity.

This was the Northeast Park

Hill of the 1950s and the early 1960s. The family with three girls and one boy was the house next door with the walks so carefully shoveled was African-American. The man across the street with the old Chevy sedan was African-American.

The duplex across the street was owned by a German man and his wife. The house with the family of seven kids across the alley was Russian. The house that looked like it was just built was owned by an African-American family. The old farmhouse was owned by a very old German woman who looked like she had lived there forever. The marvelous house kept so perfectly was owned by a Japanese family with one boy. In my house were a mix of Lebanese-American and garden variety white American.

With clarity of purpose to live our lives creatively and harmoniously, we never much noticed the difference in skin color, cultural origin or national origin. We were all so proud to live in a neighborhood where everyone cared about their houses, their kids and that they were safe with the neighbors. It was a good time. It was close to a perfectly harmonious time. I’m glad I can go back there in my mind. I wish I could take everyone back there. It might put all the current issues of the day in very good focus. It is about acceptance and inclusion. It really works. We proved it.
