Change – The Spice of Life As I look back through all my life experiences in 2023, I am struck by the many changes that have occurred in my life, my family’s lives, and my community’s lives. And, as I begin to glance into the future of 2024 the inevitability of change that is coming is like the spices in my kitchen cabinet – some are sweet, some savory, some pungent, some bitter, some are definitely a mystery. Some of the changes (like my spices) are ones I have made or planted myself and others have been and will be foisted upon me (and you) by outside forces beyond our control.

Looking back at 2023 – undoubtedly the most heartbreaking and destructive change in my life and for many in our community was the deconstruction of the Montbello Urban Farm at the United Church of Montbello. This change came because of decisions made more than five years ago by the then pastor of the church. While the Farm had been in place since 2013 and served as a learning space for hundreds of students each year, brought peace and mindfulness to many adults and youth, provided summer jobs for Montbello youth, and contributed tens of thousands of pounds of fresh locally grown produce each growing season, the then pastor succumbed to the pressures and lures of big business. In a move that came as a surprise in early 2023, we learned a deal had been struck years ago with Verizon to place a 5G cell tower in the center of the Montbello Urban Farm.

Many changes come like a double-edged sword, so it is important to look at both sides. Certainly, in a community like Montbello, cell coverage is often spotty at best, so many will look at this change and think “finally, I can drive through the hood without having my calls dropped.” In the case of many churches that serve people of color the diminishing financial stability of the church makes them the perfect target for cell tower companies that come with the lure of a 30-year contract for a monthly pittance to tie up church land so that they can up their bottom line. In this case, the rent to be collected is expected to shore up the fiscal health of the church.

Unfortunately, the mission of growing food for the community, teaching children, and the reality of the toxic radiation released by cell towers are not compatible. After months of trying to overrule the decisions made years ago to no avail, the decision was made to close the Montbello Urban Farm at United Church of Montbello. The bitter spice!

The other side of the sword. Much to my surprise, just a few days after the painful, bitter decision was made, a community partner came forward saying that they would welcome the Montbello Urban Farm on their property! So, plans are afoot, and things are in motion to open the Montbello Urban Farm in a new location just a few blocks away in early 2024. Stay tuned for more details and ways in which you can help prepare for a verdant and productive growing season where many will be able to reap the benefits of this change. The sweet and savory spice!

Montbello is Building Places and Spaces

By Donna Garnett, Chief Executive Officer, Montbello Organizing Committee The face of Montbello is changing with new buildings, renovated buildings, public art, revitalized outdoor spaces, and so on being planned and executed. Here is a brief look at one of the changes that came to fruition in 2023, one that began in 2023 and will be completed in 2024, and another that will launch in 2024 and conclude in 2025.

Concluding in 2023 - Friday December 1, 2023 marked a momentous occasion as the ribbon was cut signaling the opening of the new Denver Police District Five Station, which also houses Denver’s 911 Communications Center.

On hand for the celebration were Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, Councilwoman Stacie Gilmore, Department of Safety Chief of Staff Jeff Holiday, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas, District 5 Commander Marion Penn, a host of other city officials, and dozens of Montbello community leaders and residents. The new Denver Police District Five Station was funded by Elevate Denver Bond dollars and is located at 12025 East 45th Avenue.

The opening of the state-ofthe-art building marks more than two decades of growth and progress from 1997, when the Denver Police Department (DPD) moved into the previous District Five station, located at 4685 Peoria Street. When the bond was included on the ballot, the building was 180 percent over capacity. Thanks to Denver voter-approved bond funding, the renovated building on East 45th Avenue provides a state-of-the-art police station encompassing more than

be complete by late August, 2024. Montbello Organizing Committee (MOC) will begin working with interested residents in early May to determine eligibility for the 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments. Simultaneously, WellPower will open a Montbello Mental Health Center on the first floor and MOC’s Building Community Wealth Initiative will launch a business incubator intended to help local entrepreneurs launch their businesses.

In conjunction with Denver Health and Hospitals, a new parking lot will be constructed to accommodate the residents of the building as well as the patrons of the retail businesses.

MOC has purchased the adjacent strip mall located at 4660 Peoria to be the home of the new Daily Table Food Market. Renovations will begin late Spring with an expected opening in Fall 2024. Storefront retail space will be available in 2025.

Launching in 2024 - Designs for a new Arts Education Center are well underway with final City permitting expected sometime in early 2024. Colorado Black Arts Movement has been working with Montbello schools, local artists, and funders to create a spectacular center that will provide afford-

32,000 square feet for the police department. Commander Penn’s vision for the building is to make it a more interactive space with the community.

The expansion of the current 911 Operations Center building to include the DPD District Five Station at a cost of approximately $19 million, allows for more investigative space for detectives and police officers who work in District Five, a sally port for secure prisoner transportation, holding cells, and space for evidence collection, analysis, and storage – including a secondary stand-alone vehicle processing facility. Additionally, the new space provides parking, a plaza, and a community room for use by residents. The building is also graced by a stunning piece of public art. The “Montbello Beacon” is a 22foot-tall gleaming sculpture that is inspired by historic beacons of light that celebrate their unique location and offer hope to all who encounter it.

Opening in 2024 - It's hard to miss the towering crane that has signaled the construction of the six story FreshLo Hub Residential and Multi-use building that is being constructed right before our very eyes. Construction began in March 2023 and is expected to

able space for artists across disciplines to perform, teach, practice, and thrive; be a place for children and youth to engage in arts-focused in-school, after school, and summer programming; offer flexible program spaces for arts-related nonprofits, individual artists, and arts groups to offer programs and activities; and a cultural and arts center for the community to come together and connect. This center has been envisioned through the creative minds and hearts of many artists, educators, youth, and supporters of the arts as a means for ensuring that all can enjoy the economic and mental health advantages, and creative outlets associated with the arts.

In addition to providing long wished for arts education services, the FreshLoARTS Education Center will be part of a “circuit” for artists of color to be able to showcase their work in multiple metrowide venues. Artists, particularly artists of color, have limited opportunities to secure “gigs” that provide them with broader audiences and opportunities for paid work in their chosen industry. Fundraising for the FreshLoARTS Education Center is still underway with a goal of securing an additional $7M before construction can begin. Coming Together in 2024

By Councilmember Stacie Gilmore The holidays and New Year hopefully bring with them time to reflect, recharge and prioritize what matters to you in life. Spending time with chosen family and loved ones reminds us of how important that connection is to our health and well-being. It also can bring up the very real struggles that we experience in our families and communities. We know that people are struggling in our neighborhoods and city.

We are working hard within the city and in partnership with many nonprofits and faith-based organizations to address both our homeless and newcomer crisis. We are such a strong and united community made up of Montbello, Parkfield, Green Valley Ranch and High Point. I encourage you to stay informed about upcoming micro-communities and hotels that will be used as shelters. We always share upcoming meetings on social media and in our electronic newsletter.

If you have questions for city agencies, please save the date for our 8th Annual District 11 Townhall on February 22 at the Evie Garrett Dennis Campus.

There will be time for you to talk with city employees who will share projects that they are working on and welcome hearing your feedback. This is a popular annual event that has great participation.

Reflecting, Reaching Out and Getting Ready for 2024

By Senator James Coleman Happy almost 2024!

For me, this time of year is always full of reflecting, reaching out, and getting ready. I reflect on the blessings of my family and friends that I share life with and who support me in unbelievable ways. I am nothing without them. I am grateful for them.

I also spend time reflecting on opportunities and how we seized them to improve the lives of those in the Senate District and across the state. I look back at the great work done by our team and I am proud. I highlight the Higher Ed Financial Aid for Youth Mentors, which provides tuition assistance for college students who mentor high school students. Also, our leadership around Reduce Justice-Involve-

ment For Young Children. We were able to ensure the Investment of $4 million into building infrastructure statewide to offer Collaborative Management Programs as an alternative to jail for youth ages 12 and below. These are things that we did together and of which we should be proud.

I also get to spend time during this season reaching out and hearing from neighbors and constituents. This is really where I find my fuel for leadership; listening to the people that trust me to serve and represent them within the legislature. Hearing from people who are directly impacted by the decisions that we make helps me to make better decisions. I appreciate all of the opportunities to share a coffee, have lunch, and attend events, all with the focus of listening and learning. It makes me a better neighbor and a better legislator. Thank you for sharing your time and ideas.

So, I reflect, reach out, and get ready for the upcoming session. I am reminded that there is still much to be done. There are so many opportunities in front of us. In this new year, I am working to introduce legislation around Re-entry Cash that would increase cash for folks coming out of prison from $100 to $3K. I believe this will help us to reduce recidivism by using the funds for housing, workforce development, mental and physical health support.

I am also exploring the creation of more opportunities through Apprenticeship Training and Higher Ed Credentials.

We’ve had some initial discussions with constituents about a pilot for state run apprenticeships for high school students and recent graduates to obtain a bachelor’s degree while employed in a paid apprenticeship.

ELECTED OFFICIALS SPEAK OUT - LOS FUNCIONARIOS ELEGIDOS HABLAN There are so many opportunities for us to set the next generation up to realize success and to break cycles and silos that have held greatness hostage in our community. I want my time in the Colorado Senate to be marked by the doors that we have helped to open that no one can close.

I am grateful for the time to reflect, reach out and am ready to continue to deliver the sustainable solutions that we cocreate together. I look forward to 2024 because of us. Together we will get more done that creates the realities we have longed for.

My family wishes you and yours a very blessed season! May joy fill you, generosity move you and love surround you.

Reflexionando, Extendiendo la Mano y Preparando para 2024 Por Senador James Coleman ¡Feliz casi 2024! Para mí, esta época del año siempre está llena de reflexión, extensión de la mano y preparación. Reflexiono sobre las bendiciones de mi familia y amigos con quienes comparto la vida y quienes me apoyan de maneras increíbles.

No soy nada sin ellos. Estoy agradecido por ellos.

También dedico tiempo a reflexionar sobre las oportunidades y cómo las aprovechamos para mejorar las vidas de quienes viven en el Distrito Senatorial y en todo el estado. Miro hacia atrás al gran trabajo realizado por nuestro equipo y estoy orgulloso. The last couple years have been awash in learning opportunities as new challenges present themselves. What hasn’t changed, though, is our collective resolve to face adversity

head-on and advocate for a stronger, more vibrant, neighborhood. I am consistently inspired by the overwhelming positivity in our community’s willingness to grow despite adversity. As my first six months in office come to an end, I’m happy for the chance to take stock of how much progress we’ve already made and am excited to hit the ground running in January with a focus on even more.

I’ve had a great time connecting with my neighbors in Montbello. My work is shaped by your leadership and when we connect with compassion we can find suitable compromise toward building a stronger, more equitable community. As we close out 2023, I’m happy to share that many of the top priorities communicated to me from you are moving toward resolution.

Anyone who lives near Albrook Drive and East 46th Avenue can attest that some drivers in Denver seem to be increasingly erratic and uncaring. Traffic safety is a top concern for many as we’re all too familiar with the roar of cars racing in the late evening, as well as people rolling through stop signs and red lights. In May 2023, the city enacted a 20 MPH speed limit in Denver unless a sign notes otherwise. The next step is the necessary education campaign underway to make sure people know about this important initiative to make our city safer. Conversations are also underway with the District’s police about increased traffic enforcement, including camera vehicles placed at our most dangerous intersections and avenues.

Community safety in general has been a topic of concern this year, one that will continue into 2024. I disagree with the fact Continued on a page 8

Community safety should mean – simply – a safe community.

Neglect is apparent in some of our city’s older public facilities, and a neglected community won’t hold their pride for long. I believe that some restorative updates, and maybe some larger new facility improvements, done sooner rather than later could save us from the higher cost of having to completely replace a dilapidated building in ten years.

The pickle ball courts at our recreation center are full every time I go through, but many restorative services are missing inside the building. Therapy pools were the specific ask from some members of our district, and I am working toward securing funding for both renewal at existing facilities, and constructing new ones for communities who have none.

A safe community is, of course, also one where neighbors care for their neighbors. As the holidays quickly approach, my cheer comes from seeing Montbello unite to help those experiencing a difficult moment in their lives. Twice in the past couple weeks the District 8 Council offices – located in Montbello – have hosted donation distribution drives organized and led by members of our community for the migrants currently rebuilding their lives in Denver. Hundreds of people have come together to make sure that folks feel seen, are resourced, and have everything they need to thrive and not just survive. Compassionate citizens have contributed and distributed warm clothes, food, water, entertainment and more to refugees in our District. I will continue to follow the community’s lead and ensure that those fleeing dispa-

rate situations for an opportunity to live a more fulfilled life can find one if and when they land in Denver.

The award was presented at the Denver Preschool Program’s (DPP) Provider Appreciation Event on November 1 at the Rocky Mountain PBS Buell Public Media Center in Denver. The ceremony was attended by ECE teachers, directors, and community leaders.

As a steadfast advocate for equitable access to quality preschool since 2006, and a supportive partner to 260 preschool providers, DPP developed the annual Denver Preschool Program Legacy Award to recognize and acknowledge local leaders who have devoted their careers to improving the future of early childhood education.

I cannot believe that it is December. This year has truly flown by and has opened opportunities for us to move together to realize the hopes that we have as a community. I am grateful for the opportunity to expand our service to our community and beyond through our shared service at the United Church of Montbello (UCM). UCM is a great place with great people who have shaped not just Montbello, but our city, state, and even nation.

I am honored to share the journey with them.

UCM has been in the Montbello community since 1968 and as we wrap up our 55th year we have never been more optimistic about how we can live out our love for GOD and neighbors in powerful ways.

UCM wouldn’t be where we are without the leadership of Dr. James and Mrs. Angelle Fouther, who recently ended two decades of service at UCM. Yes, two decades.

Amazing! We appreciate all that they have done and know that UCM, Montbello, and the greater Denver community are better for it. Thank you both!!

This partnership, set to anchor the FreshLo Hub, will blend cutting-edge technology education with a rich tapestry of arts and cultural programming.

The FreshLo Hub, located in Montbello, is set to become a beacon of creativity and learning, with the Colorado Black Arts Movement DBA FreshLo/ARTS (Artists, Residents, Teachers, Students) at the helm of the new FreshLo Cultural Arts Education Center.

Their expertise in curating dynamic arts experiences will breathe life into this collaborative venture.

Once completed, the 16,000 sq ft Cultural Arts Education Center will include a 4,100 sq ft flexible theater/presentation space and house rehearsal and recital rooms, providing a nurturing environment for budding artists to refine their craft.

The partnership extends beyond physical spaces, as the Center aims to offer a diverse range of programs including on-site performing arts, presentation arts, and arts education.

In a move that underscores their commitment to community engagement, the Center will collaborate with Denver Public Schools to integrate arts programming into the curriculum, enriching the educational experience for students.

The collaboration of STREAM with DPS continues to bring equitable changes in arts, technology and education as Montbello area schools such

as John H. Amesse Elementary and DSST Elevate adopt the curriculum and programming in their classrooms. The advanced technology classes are individualized project-based learning courses grounded in technical arts (audio, lighting, video) but expand far beyond those norms in the areas of computer programming, cybersecurity and digital navigation for young scholars.

One of the most exciting aspects of this collaboration is the inclusion of classes for the broader community, facilitated by external nonprofits. This ensures that the Center becomes a hub for formal education and a community resource for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to explore and expand their creative horizons.

By Michelle Simmons, LPC Have you ever said, “New Year, New Me” or made a list of resolutions a mile long? It is common that with a new year comes new hopes and a new outlook for the future. This is the time of year we find ourselves optimistically setting goals and resolving to do things differently with the belief that change is coming.

What I know for sure is that you deserve the best version of you. What I also know is that you cannot be consistent and have inconsistent results. As you realize this, it is important that you consistently set your-

self up for success. Establishing a goal of making progress versus perfection is the way to go. Sometimes we all lack patience and want an instant fix for a challenge that we are facing, however, we must all take baby steps as those small, yet consistent, steps will support us in reaching our goals. As Iylanla always reminds us, “we have to be willing to do the work,” regardless of how long it takes to achieve our goals.

The work begins with setting goals and having a plan to achieve them. The following SMART acronym is a powerful tactic that will help increase your chances of success.

Specific - Include details of what you want to accomplish in your goals. Make them clear and plain.

Measurable - Is this something you will do daily?

Weekly? Monthly? Measuring your progress accurately will determine your progress toward your goal.

Attainable - Is your goal possible? Your goals need to challenge you and not be too easy or too hard.

Realistic - Be honest with yourself. You will be able to reach your goal if you put in the time and effort and have the necessary resources.

Timely – Ensure your goal is useful to you at this time in your life and can be met in the time allotted.

You can do anything you desire! You are the master of your fate and the captain of your soul. Remember, we are here to help and support the new you in 2024. Community Organizations Come Together this Holiday Season to Share the Gift of Giving Key among the values that unites the Montbello community is caring for our neigh-

bors. That care is perhaps most apparent during the holidays when families, churches, schools, businesses and individuals do what they can to share warmth, food and joy with each other.

Here’s a look at a few of the key events which took place this holiday season.

“Need to Feed” Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway On November 18, 2023, the Struggle of Love Foundation, along with community partners, brought warmth and nourishment to our community through the "Need to Feed" Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway. During this extraordinary event, 1,000 baskets filled with all the essentials for a traditional Thanksgiving meal were given away allowing families from diverse backgrounds to celebrate the holiday with joy and gratitude.

The day was a resounding success, made possible by the dedication of our tireless volunteers and the support of our generous donors. It reminded us of the incredible impact that unity and compassion can achieve. It was a day filled with smiles, heartfelt thanks, and the assurance that together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our neighbors in need.

Toy Give-Away Smiles abounded at Athletics & Beyond Family Wellness Center in Montbello on Saturday, December 16, 2023.

Over 100 families in Montbello and the surrounding communities enjoyed a festive day of food, music, community and free toy giveaways. Recognizing that the holidays can be emotionally and financially challenging, Athletics & Beyond teamed up with local businesses, community-led

organizations, and Toys for Tots to distribute holiday gifts and bring joy for our youngsters from Montbello and the surrounding community.

Plans to Address Homelessness in Far NE Denver

By Chris Urias, Program Manager, Montbello Organizing Committee In a concerted effort to combat homelessness in Denver, Mayor Johnston’s House1000 Initiative strives to establish multiple micro-communities citywide that will accommodate 1,000 individuals by the end of 2023. One such site is the proposed Micro Community at 12033 E. 38th Ave., formerly the Stay Inn near Montbello. Envisioned as a holistic solution, this micro-community will boast 52 units, 2 community spaces, 2 meeting homes, 12 ADA units, and 2 pet relief areas, fostering a supportive environment for those grappling with homelessness. The site will house 54 pallet home units in the Stay Inn’s parking lot, with future plans for an additional 94 longterm units.

Going beyond mere shelter provision, the proposed Micro Community will offer on-site facilities, including restrooms, kitchens, laundry services, trash services, benefit navigation, SNAP assistance, employment services, and various support services. Office staff and 24/7 support, including mental health and addiction services, will be available. Notably, there will be no walk-up services, prioritizing the safety and well-being of residents and the community.

Security remains paramount for the initiative’s success. The city plans to engage a service provider to enforce basic guidelines, ensuring a secure environment for interim housing residents and surrounding communities.

Addressing community con-

cerns, Mayor Johnston emphasizes the “Good Neighbor Agreement” process, encouraging resident participation and volunteering. The city is unwavering in its commitment to transparency and accountability, actively involving the community in decisions with direct impacts. Operations for the Proposed Micro Community at 12033 E. 38th Ave. are scheduled to commence by mid-December 2023. To keep the community informed, Mayor Johnston hosted a community information meeting on December 5th, providing updates on the site’s progress.

In addition to the proposed Micro Community site, Montbello is currently home to a Native American-Inclusive Safe Outdoor Space, overseen by the Colorado Village Collaborative. Operating in the parking lot at 4635 N. Peoria Street, within the Arie P. Taylor Municipal Center, the project is set to continue until December 31, 2024, according to information posted on www.coloradovillagecollaborative.org. This collaborative effort underscores Montbello’s dedication to addressing homelessness transparently and with community involvement.

The proposed amendment reads as follows: “Education is a fundamental right held by all human persons; it is a means for achieving social equality and necessary for the fulfillment of freedom, justice, and peace.

The Colorado General Assembly shall protect, respect, and support this right. Public schools are sanctuaries, spaces where the inherent and inalienable dignity of the human person is inviolate, spaces where compassionate guidance abounds. In its effect, education for human growth and dignity strengthens the individual and community, it fosters agency rather than servitude, and promotes solidarity among all human persons. Furthermore, education enables the actualization of human potential through the arts, sciences, and humanities.

The Colorado General Assembly shall create and maintain public schools as safe and healthy spaces where all human persons will experience their inherent dignity and understand the rights flowing from it. Guided by the principles of integrity and equity, the Colorado General Assembly shall ensure that all public school students have ongoing and diverse opportunities to meaningfully participate in their education.

As a paramount requisite of education, meaningful participation fulfills the promise of the public schools as havens for learning and growth, crucibles for inquiry and experimentation, forums for dialogue and dissent.”

Since our inception at the church, we’ve consistently grown and distributed thousands of pounds of fresh produce annually through the Sacks of Love Food Pantry and a low-cost farmer’s market, specifically designed to cater to the needs of residents.

More than 300 young individuals each year actively engage in planting, tending, and harvesting across our one-acre growing space. In addition, we’ve successfully hosted high school internships during the summer, providing paid opportunities, STEM education, leadership development, and fostering a profound understanding of the critical issue of food access. In the midst of addressing hunger, our youth participants leave with smiles, having experienced challenging (yet enjoyable) work, and we, in turn, feel immense pride witnessing the positive transformation in our community.

Granja Urbana de Montbello se Prepara para Echar Nuevas Raíces Por Josue Rodriguez, Gerente de Programa CFA Granjas Infantiles en Acción (Children’s Farms in Action (CFA) concluyó recientemente su evento annual, Pon Tu Jardín en la Cama (Put your Garden to Bed) para finalizar el tiempo de Montbello Urban Farm (Granja Urbana de Montbello) en la Iglesia Unida de Montbello (United Church of Montbello) a mediados de octubre. Esta iniciativa comuniataria invita a todos a participar, aprender y cosechar juntos mientras preparamos nuestro jardín para los meses de invierno. board members on December 1, 2023. Kimberlee Sia for District 1, John Youngquist for AtLarge, and Marlene DeLaRosa for District 5 have replaced former board members, Scott Balderman from District 1, Auon’tai Anderson who held the At-Large seat, and Lindsey Charmaine from District 5.

All three candidates were endorsed by Mayor Mike Johnston, as well as other educational organizations, such as Denver Families Action. Although none of the new board members directly oversee the Far Northeast, their work is integral to the success of Denver Public Schools as a whole. In the 2024 school year, conversations surrounding school safety, declining enrollment, and teacher retention will be top of mind. It will be interesting to see how this new school board will work together to tackle these hard hitting issues.

Kimberlee Sia, representing Southeast Denver, has ample experience inside the school as a teacher, principal, district administrator, and president of a teacher union. Sia also brings a community lens from her time as the CEO of the Colorado “I Have a Dream” Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides after school programming and other support for students and their families.

Sia’s priorities, according to her interview with the Chalkbeat Colorado include, “Implementing initiatives related to student safety and well-being, focusing on mental health support to improve academic outcomes, creating a sense of belonging within the school, and proactively addressing safety concerns. Student safety, including social, emotional and physical safety is of paramount importance.”

MONTBELLO VIEWPOINTS - PUNTOS DE VISTA DE MONTBELLO Marlene DeLaRosa, representing Northwest Denver, has lived in her neighborhood for almost 30 years. She served on various organizations including the Hispanic Chamber Education Foundation, DPS Hispanic Education Advisory Council, DPS Parent Advisory Council, Circle of Latina Leadership and the National Council of La Raza. According to Chalkbeat Colorado, DeLaRosa identified, “Academic performance as it is reflected in the achievement gap as the biggest issue facing her district today… Nearly one third of District 5 students are multilanguage learners and the district should take into consideration academic growth over time as well as meeting the specific learning needs of the whole child.”

With 35 years of experience with DPS, John Youngquist provides a variety of perspectives into the school system. As a DPS graduate, parent, volunteer, former teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent, Younquist is passionate about school safety, mental health, transparency within DPS, teaching and learning, as well as integrity, equity, and synergy. He states that, “I will have an impact by requiring the superintendent to: create a formal agreement with Denver Police and other safety partners within my first 60 days on the board; require student, parent, and principal voices be present in a full redesign of the DPS discipline policy; direct significant increases in mental health services at school sites and recommend a tripling of School-based Health Clinics, and require a redesign of district mental health services including innovative actions like an adaptation of

Denver Support Team Assisted Response Systems (STAR) for the school site.”

MOC Celebrates 11 New Entrepreneurship Foundations Graduates

Participants in the Summer 2023 (4th Cohort) and the Fall 2023 (5th Cohort) shared their experiences and new business plans in a joint graduation ceremony.

La Universidad Little Dreamers y Dreaming Beyond

El 11 de noviembre de 2023 se agregaron once emprendedores a la lista de egresados del programa Construyendo Fundaciones de Emprendimiento de Riqueza Comunitaria (Building Community Wealth, Entrepreneurship Foundations/FE). Participantes en el verano de 2023 (cuarta cohorte) y el otoño de 2023 (quinta cohorte) compartieron sus experiencias y nuevos planes de negocios en una ceremonia de graduación conjunta.

Jasmine Williams was a member of the 2023 fall Cohort Building Community Wealth Entrepreneurship Foundations (EF) program. She has been an educator for more than ten years and currently works at Denver Public Schools. Jasmine’s focus has been in early child development and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). She enrolled in the EF program to learn how to use her experience and passion for education to open a unique educational program for children preparing for kindergarten.

During the program, Jasmine developed a business plan for Little Dreamers University, which is anticipated to open in August 2024. Little Dreamers University will offer an engaging and competitive curriculum for children from ages of six weeks to five years old. In addition to stellar academic programming, students will engage in age-appropriate technology programs, arts and crafts, and performing arts programs. Little Dreamers University will be focused on preparing children for school so that they can thrive.

We are pleased to introduce three new staff members who are committed to a stronger, more connected, and resilient community.

Christopher Urias, Community Development Program Manager I am a passionate Montbello native who is driven by a love for exploration, community, and positive change. As a dedicated community advocate, I forge connections in the neighborhood as a board member for Montbello 2020 RNO, Friends of Front Range Wildlife Refuge, and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. My extensive board roles and fellowship with Trust for Public Land provide a deep understanding of Montbello’s unique challenges and opportunities.

With over 8 years of nonprofit experience as a Program Manager, I lead initiatives in climate action, mobility, housing, and transit programs.

Beyond my professional commitments, I enjoy house-

plants, competing in esports, outdoor activities, and inspiring positive change in my community. I cherish quality time with my partner, Tina, and our feline companion, Monkey.

Lidet Shiferaw, Education Program Manager My dedication to advancing educational equity began as a student at DSST Green Valley Ranch, where I championed equal access to education. I also emphasized holistic child development and advocated for an inclusive curriculum through my involvement with initiatives such as the 2016 ballot for the Bond and Mill Levy and the DPS WHY (We Hear You) Committee.

At the University of Denver, my role at the Cultural Center honed enhancing the experience of marginalized identities in higher education. I am eager to contribute to ensuring that every student in the Greater Montbello Area receives a high-quality education and ample opportunities for success.

Silvia Gonzalez, Food Access Program Manager I was born in Michoacan, Mexico and brought to the US at the age of 12 years old. I am a certified Yoga instructor, and am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

From an early age, I understood the power of food and its connection to people’s mental

and physical wellbeing. My professional experience includes working in the healthcare industry and with food accessibility in the metro area.

I am passionate about helping others through food justice and education initiatives that lead to healthier communities.

My goal as Food Access Program Manager is to continue to sow life through my work at Montbello Organizing Committee and to make a positive impact in the Montbello community.

In my spare time, I enjoy being with loved ones, trying new foods, practicing and teaching Yoga, and exploring the outdoors in Colorado.

CU President Committed to Campus Diversity Op-ed byTodd Saliman, University of Colorado President

It’s the season of giving thanks, and I’m incredibly thankful for the community that continues to support our work at the University of Colorado. I’ve met many wonderful Coloradans who have strengthened my commitment to ensuring our campuses reflect the diversity of our great state.

Recently, I was invited to participate in a dialogue on education in Colorado by a group of Black women in the metro Denver area who are working to improve the state of education for Black youth. I was honored to participate in CU Denver’s celebration of its AANAPISI (Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution) designation, as it also strives to achieve HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) designation in recognition of its significant enrolled Hispanic student demographic.

I visited the Southern Ute Tribe during the signing of CU Boulder’s revived partnership with the Southern Ute Department of Education, which will provide scholarships to Native American students seeking a four-year degree. I was invited to Cafecito Denver, a group of Latinas who are champions of state and local efforts affecting the Hispanic community. I am

honored to walk arm in arm with Colorado’s diverse communities as we work to reflect the diversity of our great state with our students, faculty and staff.

I remain concerned that the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to remove race as a consideration in college admissions will discourage some minority students from applying to CU. This court’s decision should have no impact on our undergraduate admissions process.

We are currently accepting applications and are ready to support all who seek a degree from one of our campuses.

So, my message is simple: Apply to CU! All of our campuses accept a large majority of the Colorado students who apply. Our acceptance rates demonstrate that most Colorado high school students who want to attend CU can.

This year, of our more than 66,000 students, over 21,000 students of color are enrolled at CU’s campuses. However, work clearly remains.

We know many Coloradans have concerns about the affordability of a four-year degree.

Like most people, I wish col-

lege cost less. That said, it may cost less than you think, and we work hard to keep tuition in check. Every year, we draw a large number of students transferring from community colleges and other four-year institutions, and we’re making it easier to transfer high school and community college credits while providing meaningful support to these students.

Transferring credits can shorten the time it takes to earn a CU degree, which makes a CU education cheaper.

Additionally, many students qualify for Federal, state and institutional aid, thereby significantly reducing the cost of college. At CU, we’ve doubled our investment in grants and scholarships over the past decade, and, on average, we’ve increased institutional aid 8.7 percent per year. Last year alone, CU awarded nearly $240 million in grants and scholarships.

We also have programs in place aimed specifically at Colorado high school graduates, including our Colorado Promise program, which provides free tuition and fees for eligible Colorado resident students Continued on page 22

So, let me address the issue of belonging for every Colorado student who wants a four-year degree as a foundation for their future: You DO belong at CU, and we are here to help you achieve your dream!
