Colorful Stories Need To Be Seen, and Heard Denver Urban Spectrum is seeking nominations for the 2nd annual “Colorful Stories, See Me Hear Me” luncheon to be held in 2020. These stories of tribulation, courage and triumphwill be presented through video, conversation and written profiles, and will highlight individuals who have overcome obstacles, adversity and tragedy, who are now living successful and meaningful lives. In 2018, five courageous women were featured and shared their stories including Carlotta Walls LaNier, the youngest of the Little Rock Nine; Marie Phason, whose 6-year old son, Broderick Bell, was hit by a random gunshot and survived; Denver playwright and actress, Rhonda Jackson, who was diagnosed with Lupus in 1994; Senator Rhonda Fields, whose son and fiancé were murdered; and Ruth Boyd, an 80-year old mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was beaten to death in her home. She was the mother of DUS publisher, Rosalind “Bee” Harris. At this powerful event, Denver Urban Spectrum shared a message about overcoming tribulation with courage and personal conviction, bringing light to issues that still need a better response and solutions from the community. Attendees learned up close and personal how these women persevered through videos and a panel discussion.

If you or someone you know wants to share their story, call 303-292-6446 or email publisher@urbanspectrum.net.

Join Me and Support Proposition DD It was Thomas Campbell, one of the early American Protestant reformers who said, “Where the Bible speak, we speak. Where the Bible is silent, we are silent.” As a general rule I do not use the Bible to validate opinions that are clearly open to interpretation. The Bible was never intended to be used as a battering ram for subjective opinions that demand objective reasoning. One’s use of the Bible as the SOLE authority for daily decisions and thought is simply irresponsible. All of the great theologians lay claim to scriptural authority, but they also encourage the use of our EXPERIENCE and REASON. As Christians, we are allowed to think (reason) and act (experience) in ways outside of the ancient Biblical Texts. That is requirement for spiritual growth. It is both healthy and holy and encouraged by Scripture. Jesus said in Mark 12:30: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” We are free to love God with our whole selves, but I especially love it when Jesus said to use your “mind” to love and understand God. The ballot initiative DD that is currently up for a vote is one of those initiatives that require the use of your mind, if you happen to be a Christian voting on this measure. Caution: No one will die for voting to protect our precious environment that God has entrusted us to care for. The first assignment given to humanity was to care for Gods earth. To quote the words of a great American, Malcolm X, God has called us to take care of God’s creation ”by any means necessary” The argument or its proof cannot and should not be rooted in the Bible. We can nullify and refute each other’s claims about gambling or non-gambling using the Bible and nothing will ever get settled. We will only ride the hamster wheel. The issue of gambling or not has been resolved years ago. People gamble in every city and village in this country. People gambled in biblical days. In fact, we are told the soldiers who crucified Jesus gambled for his robe while he hung and died on the cross. Again, it is so fruitless to argue moot points. People gamble. In some places it is legal. Case closed. Let’s, as Christians, move on...Next? I am an avid outdoorsman. I love to hunt. I am a responsible outdoorsman. I believe we are all charged to take care of this beautiful space we live in. If gambling revenues are used to facilitate our stewardship of God’s earth, then it is really beneath me to reject the intent of those resources, even if I disagree with the origin. The use of the funds far outweigh any so called “moral argument” about the immoral source from which they came. The mature Christian mind would never make a moral argument for the destruction or neglect of the earth, nor would any mature believer be against the maintenance of God’s earth. That is nonsensical and works against our better interests as caretakers of God’s creation. I plan to support, wholeheartedly, Proposition DD because I believe God supports it! “The wealth of the wicked is laid up for the righteous” (Proverbs 12:22) and believers ought to be willing to receive it by any means necessary!
