01 REGROW Disturbanism in Coupled Urban and Natural System 2019 Tutor : Justyna Karakiewicz, Theo Blankley Individual work

This project looks at emergent opportunities that bring manufacturing (including food production) back into the urban areas. The question asked is whether manufacturing can have positive impacts not only in terms of economic returns, diversifying employment, and increasing innovation, but also have a positive effect on the environment. Regrow focuses on recycling wasted coffee grounds through many ways of manufacturing in the urban context. Coffee ground has significant environmental impact, however largely unaware by the public. Hence, the Bean Pavilion promotes and introduces innovative ways of coffee ground manufacturing to the audience. Imagine being able to replace many takeaway coffee cups with biodegradable cups made from coffee grounds. The Shroom Pavilion maufactures these cups and mushroom farming with coffee grounds collected from cafes. The architecture illustrates a natural language and acts as a medium to raise awareness of coffee ground.

02 ALGAE - COFFEE [INFRA]-SCULPTURE Shortlisted - AA Prize for Unbuilt Work Competition 2021 Shortlisted - Architizer One Drawing Challenge 2021 2020 Group Work : Deon Cham, Jie jin, Heyu Lu

This research project is investigating the reinvention of urban infrastructure in the Post-Covid era. It aims to decentralise the existing infrastructural system that mainly serves the purpose of mass consumption. Hence, we propose a new type of “infra-sculpture” that can be localised, visualised, and popularised in the built environment. The idea intends to change how the public perceives infrastructural system, thus raising public awareness of current consumption practice and [bio] diversity. We propose two types of infra-sculptural systems: energy self-sufficient system using algae, and waste recycling system using wasted coffee ground. These two systems interconnect and coexist with one another, forming a self-sufficient ecosystem that is renewable and recyclable in terms of water and waste. Ultimately, this proposal aims to echo the concept of coupled urban-natural systems. By creating a new set of self-sufficient infrastructural ecosystem, it decentralises the existing infrastructural framework with the localised, visualised, and popularised infra-sculptures. “We challenge the current status quo of infrastructure and envision a self-sufficient and zero-waste infrasculpture”.



With Melbourne currently facing freshwater shortages, the establishment of algae-desalination infrasculpture will substitute freshwater with desalinated greywater for daily activities such as gardening, car-washing, and toilet flushing. Seawater will be desalinated in the algaetowers near the coastline of Melbourne Bay and transported to the inner-land communities through its network. Concurrently, the byproducts of the desalination will be converted into electricity and heat, together with the biowaste as energy supply for the waste recycling infra-sculpture in the adjacent neighborhood. To achieve self-sufficiency, the algaetower is coupled with the energy-dependent waste recycling system.

The main objective of waste recycling infrasculpture is a response to the coffee culture of Melbourne. As Melbournians consume a large amount of coffee daily, the wasted coffee ground poses a threat to the environment. By recycling these coffee ground through different creative processes, we promote better efficiency of recycling, hence producing sustainable products with zero waste and ultimately, feeding it back to the community with value-added design. These interventions in the urban structure promote even more new interventions to appear. We can imagine how this could change our set of values and norms and how new knowledge is created, stimulating more innovation to happen.


03 LOST & FOUND : THE CRAFT OF PAPERMAKING Create l Curate 2020 Tutor : Yui Uchimura Individual work

The traditional craft of papermaking has been under a growing threat of neglect. However, once a lost craft soon to be discovered. Lost and Found is all about the craft and people. Through the process of papermaking, it aims to preserve the heritage of the craft, and contribute towards social, economic, and environmental sustainability. A sanctuary for expressing the art of the craft, this project facilitates the work of paper artisans and exhibitions. The overall design is derived from planar geometry similar to paper, forms inspired by the papermaking equipment, and a strong relationship with nature. Spaces flow from public to private, taking visitors through a journey of the craft’s process from raw material to the final product. The choice of materials, joinery, lighting, and details are inspired by scrutinising the craft’s process, tools and equipment, and the textural quality of the craft. “The hand should express all knowledge, the mind should be clear and breathing should be tranquil…”

04 BUDDHA ODYSSEY Bathhouse 2019 Tutor : Hella Wigge Individual work

This project explores the experience of space as embodied beings through the highly charged environments of an inner urban Public Bathhouse. “Lost in the hectic city, I heard a calm and tranquil sound. The closer I approach, the more I discover. Immersed myself in a pool of water, a place that facilitates meditation like no other. I stumbled across a big tree, somehow waiting for a word with me. There were moments of pause, solitude and introspection as I travel from spaces to spaces. It felt like a journey... A journey towards enlightenment.”

05 MUSEUM OF GOLD Thesis : DIG 2020 Tutor : Virginia Mannering Individual work

Since the gold rush in 1850, it has led to Melbourne’s city boom and became a success in the eyes of many. However, these whiggish, triumphal narratives have uninformed the society on the subversive side of history during the gold rush. Although gold mining in Victoria has prompted beneficial to the economy, it caused the destruction and long term loss of ecological sustainability due to the perception of humans having sovereignty over nature, hence exploiting it at any cost to gain gold. In addition, despite the appealing aspect of modern architecture’s building materials as clean, abundant and neutral, most existing buildings in the city were built with mine waste. The Gold Museum aims to exhibit the gold and mining collection to educate people about the history and contribution of gold to the rise of Melbourne City and the environmental damage towards the city due to the mining of gold. The museum plays an important role to convey the importance of the loss of the physical (environment) for the pursuance of the intangible (gold) through its architecture. The museum also questions the hypocritical idea of modern architecture, by making architecture the embodiment of the environmental damage.

06 TALL OFFICE BUILDING Applied Architectural Technology 2019 Tutor : Marcin Polgar Group Work : Deon Cham, Bin Wang, Marissa Wong

The tower is built based on a simple square typology aligned on La Trobe St and Exhibition St. The lack of green space and connectivity around the site promoted the agenda of new lifestyle and nature back into the city. This office tower has allowance of leasing depth, which enables efficiency and flexibility for the interior volume of the working space. The 20m high podium provides a space frame glazed canopy and an open public space to pedestrians. The designated setbacks reduce block sunshine for other surrounding buildings. The square core of the tower is utilised for maximisation of tower space. The podium addressed zoning between retail and communal space, with communal facing directly towards La Trobe St, a strategic spot for transportation. The zoning of space creates separation as well as interconnectivity from one area to another. The crown is angled and facing towards the north east direction to not only reduce the length, but also the intensity of shadows. It also creates a unique landmark of civic value for the tower. Interstitial spaces, or the mechanical levels provide breathing and circulation. The tower is cantilevered and provides garden areas and comfortable breakout spaces.

08 TEARDROP STOOL Wooden Furniture Workshop 2020 Tutor : David Fedyk, Joshua Stevens Group Work : Deon Cham, Tetwey Chen

The design of the Teardrop Stool is driven by the desire to push the boundaries of timber veneer, moulding in more than one directional movement at the same time, with the aid of a vacuum bag moulding process. After multiple prototyping and experimentation, the teardrop shaped was formed. This form allows the veneer to be used structurally, supporting loads despite with just two leg modules. Each leg comprises of ten sheets of 0.6mm karri veneer, a durable Australian hardwood that produces an interlocked grain. The seat also uses similar type of veneer. These veneers are binded together, layer by layer using a mixture of epoxy resin and slow hardener before attaching them onto the mould and into the vacuum bag. After 24 hours, the moulded veneers are then taken out for sanding. The epoxy resin that seeps out through the grains of the veneer gives an additional aesthetic value to the finishing of the modules, a beautiful reflective quality. The teardrop void adds functional value to the stool for holding daily objects, such as magazines, newspapers and others. “A timeless piece reminiscing a part of historical event”.
