The 2015-2016 school year witnessed numerous student and faculty accomplishments. The Fred Keil Center for Sports Medicine is nearly complete as we welcome our first cohort of student-athletic trainers and new curriculum offerings. As with the year prior, such enhancements benefit our current Spartans providing them a safe and academically rich school environment. Scholarship, faith and community, the pillars of a DePaul education, are modeled daily in the actions of our dedicated faculty and students.

It is my pleasure to share with you the 60th Anniversary Edition of the Spartan Sentinel and our Report on Voluntary Giving. As we celebrate our 60th year, it is my honor and privilege to continue the legacy of faith-filled service and academic excellence that is at the heart of DePaul Catholic High School. I am grateful to our countless supporters, who readily share their time, talent and treasure with our school making it possible to accomplish our important work. So much has been achieved over our first sixty years and our goals and dreams for the future are bright and exciting. Our new strategic plan, “Building on a Legacy”, is part goal and part dream. It will serve as our school’s guide for growth and development. I am confident that the possibilities for DePaul Catholic are limitless thanks to our supportive Board of Trustees, strong alumni, talented and dedicated faculty, committed parents and inspirational students. Regardless of your affiliation to DePaul Catholic, each of us is united by a common bond – we are members of the Spartan Family.

As you read the following pages, remember your time with your DePaul family. Perhaps it was your first Mass or a championship victory that brings that smile. Hopefully it includes a shared connection with an adult, teacher, coach, or a role model who had a positive impact on your life. Finally, I am nearly positive your memory will contain a classmate or two, individuals with whom you likely created lifelong friendships. As I reflect, my mind is filled with lasting images of Spartans, people of great courage and self-discipline, actively pursuing scholarship, faith and community. Images of warm smiles in the morning, jubilation after success, and a deep sigh released at graduation for a job well-done. I invite each Spartan to return to Alps Road for a visit and join us in celebrating sixty years of Excellence in Scholarship, Faith and Community. While the bricks and mortar may have changed, DePaul Catholic’s core foundation remains grounded in our Catholic faith. DePaul Catholic High School’s New Principal

National Honor Society Inductees

For DePaul Catholic High School’s new principal, Fr. Peter Clarke, the term “welcome home” has new meaning. Prior to returning to his beloved DPCHS family this past July, he served as Principal of St. Brendan’s Catholic School in Clifton for the past five years. Fr. Peter is a familiar face to many, having served as DPCHS’ Chaplain for almost five years leading up to his appointment at St. Brendan as well as the “voice” of DPCHS’ Annual Tricky Tray. As Chaplain at DPCHS, he was involved in the Peer Ministry Program, served as Theology Department Chairperson and Headmaster of the then-newly-established 8th Grade Prep Program. A 2004 graduate of St. Mary’s Seminary and University, Fr. Peter was ordained on May 29, 2004 and assigned to St. Vincent DePaul Parish in Stirling, NJ as Parochial Vicar. He is a graduate of Centenary College with a B.A. in Elementary Education and earned an M.S. in Education Administration from New York University. He also holds an M.A. in Theology from St. Mary’s Seminary and University and is currently completing his dissertation for a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from The College of St. Elizabeth. In the following Q&A, Fr. Peter sheds some light on what it means to be back home at DPCHS: What brought you back to DPCHS? When the principal position opened up, the Bishop graciously appointed me – based on my qualifications and genuine affection for this place – and I was absolutely thrilled! Living up to its mantra as “the place to be,” DePaul Catholic holds a very special place in my heart that has only grown during the past 10 years. What are some of DPCHS’ greatest attributes that have stood the test of time? Of course, there are many familiar faces among the faculty who – regardless of their tenure – are dedicated to and passionate about providing our students with a top-notch Catholic-based education. They not only teach and challenge on an academic level, they instill character and a sense of community into everyday student experiences.

Why is this balance so important in today’s society? Guiding students and providing them with the tools to establish their own moral compass is not something you find everywhere. At DePaul Catholic, we have the opportunity to help our students stay the course – and get back on track when necessary – in becoming respectful and respectable human beings. They need not be ashamed or afraid of making mistakes – we are all living out our faith by being here for one another.

What do you see on the horizon in terms of the curriculum? Of course we will continue to keep our finger on the pulse of future educational trends as well as what colleges and universities are seeking in terms of rigor. DPCHS has become known for its strong cross-curricular foundation in the humanities, math, science and engineering so we will continue to broaden our offerings, where appropriate. My role is to support the teaching staff and contribute toward advancing their respective subject areas.

Sports Medicine Program

The purpose of the DePaul Catholic High School Sports Medicine program is to provide an overview of the measures for the prevention, management, and rehabilitation of athletic related injuries. Students will study basic anatomy as it applies to athletic injuries, protective equipment taping and bracing to protect the injured area and different theories of evaluation and rehabilitation techniques as they apply

to athletic injuries. Problems such as nutrition, physical examination, wound care, environmental conditions, therapeutic modalities, and the Keil Center for Sports Medicine facility and equipment are discussed. Students in the program are given the opportunity to learn real life hands on skills and work closely with Nancy Keil, Athletic Trainers, teams, coaches and Physical Education faculty.

The Group continued the celebration with a memorial Mass and lunch at DePaul Catholic on October 22nd followed by an evening of laughter and dancing at the Hyatt Morristown. On Saturday, October 22nd, the class of 1976 gathered at the Embassy Suites in Parsippany, NJ to celebrate their 40th reunion. Over fifty members of the class came together for a trip down memory lane.

We Should spend as much time thanking God for his benefits as we do in asking him for them. ~ Vincent DePaul On Tuesday, September 27, 2016, the DePaul Catholic and Holy Spirit School communities came together in celebration of 60 years of excellence for both institutions and to thank God for all his benefits. Many may remember, the first graduating DePaul Class began at Holy Spirit in Pequannock while construction of DePaul Catholic was complete. Father Peter Clarke, Principal, Father Mike Lee, Chaplain and other priests from the Diocese of Paterson celebrated the Feast of St. Vincent DePaul Mass. Father Peter bought everyone on a trip down memory lane with photos. Imagine, in 1960, tuition was $100 for ALL four years! DPCHS Board of Trustees Chairman Bill Martin DePaul Catholic Apostle of Charity Award Recipient Class of ’64 Grad Credits DPCHS Education as Foundation for his Success William Martin, current Chairman of the Board of Trustees and this year’s St. Vincent DePaul Apostle of Charity Award recipient, has never been one to shy away from a challenge. Even at the young age of 13, when he set his mind to something, he not only achieved it, he exceeded his own and others’ expectations. While in eighth grade, Bill had been told he probably would not pass the Cooperative Admissions Examination Program (COOP) exam for admission to DePaul Catholic High School. Not only did he do well, he gained a coveted spot in the incoming Class of 1964. “We had just moved to a new home in Wayne from Queens and some people thought the quality of my city education had been inferior to that of the schools in suburban Northern New Jersey,” said Bill. “That was all the motivation I needed to do well on the COOP.” “As the oldest of four, my mother really wanted me to attend DePaul and the school’s administrators persuaded me that I needed to prepare myself for a college education,” he added. “So it was with great anticipation – and a bit of angst – that I became of member of the school’s fifth graduating class.” Following graduation in 1964, Bill did what many college-bound students from financially-strapped middle-class families did at the time. He secured a full-time job – at Grand Union headquarters in Elmwood Park, NJ – and attended Fairleigh Dickinson University as a parttime student in the evenings. Through old-fashioned hard work and dedication, he earned a B.S. in marketing and graduated in 1969. Like many twenty-somethings at the time, his original life goals were to buy 10

Scholarship, faith and community – this foundation will propel all of our young people, regardless of their paths, into successful tomorrows,” he added.

a new car and get engaged. Along the way, he gained a renewed appreciation for his roots. “My parents struggled financially but we were blessed – they had a great marriage, four children and good health,” said Bill, who is proud he left college debt-free. “I was intent on doing well in my career and saw healthcare as an industry that had ‘legs,’ as they say. The timing was right to get in at the ground-floor just when the industry was taking off.” Early Career Sets Stage for Future Success During the first 11 years of his career, Bill held a wide range of sales and marketing executive positions with California-based Stuart Pharmaceuticals; Benton & Bowles (B&B), a Madison Ave.-based advertising firm; and McGraw-Hill, where he honed his skills specializing in healthcare publications. “During these years I kept an open mind, entrenched myself in the publishing side of the business and learned a lot,” explained Bill. “I was 34 years old, married to my wife Janet and had two wonderful children – a son, Brian, and daughter, Suzanne. But I was bit by the entrepreneurial bug – I had an idea and I never wanted to wonder ‘what if…’” This idea served as the business model for Medical Publishing Enterprises (MPE) Communications, of which Bill was a Co-Founder and the President. Starting off with one physician-targeted magazine, MPE evolved into a highly regarded diversified medical journal publishing/communications company serving a wide range of medical specialties and pharmaceutical industries.

Changing of the Guard Happily married to Janet for 44 years, Bill has never been one to slow down. In addition to serving on DPCHS’ like,” he said. “The timing was right since pharmaceutical companies were driven to accelerate product adoption on new drugs, due to FDA regulations, that only had a nine-year ‘exclusive’ lifespan. After that, they became generics.”

Board of Trustees, he is a member of the Executive Board and Chairperson of the Tri-County Scholarship Committee; a member of the audit committee for Oasis in Paterson, NJ; and a member of the Board of Governors and Membership Committee Chairperson at North Jersey Country Club. For the first time in his life, with a milestone birthday looming this March, Bill is planning to ease into a more “traditional” retirement. He will be stepping down as Chairman of DPCHS’ Board of Trustees at the close of this

year. In addition, he will spend more time on Florida’s East Coast with Janet as well as at their beach house in Sea Girt with son Brian, who is married to Tara, a DPCHS alum, and their children Brendan and Juliette, as well as his daughter Suzanne and her son Max. “DePaul Catholic High School will always hold a special place in my heart. And, I will never be shy about sharing my ideas – why would I start now?” joked Bill. “The time is right to pass the baton to the next generation that will guide us through the next 60 years.”

Career Day

In 1999, MPE was acquired by Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc., a publicly traded advertising company. While Bill remained at the helm as chairman, another entrepreneurial business concept was brewing. Soon after leaving MPE, Bill cofounded InComm Conferencing, a global conferencing company focusing on corporate, audio, video and web conferencing. InComm was acquired by Chorus Call, Inc., and Bill remains as a member of its board today. “Building a career and providing for my family were my priorities over the years, so it wasn’t until my son was preparing to go to high school – and my daughter three years later – that I wanted the same DePaul Catholic education for my children what my parents wanted for me,” said Bill, who went on to volunteer on various committees, from the golf outing to educational committees and capital campaigns.

“I never wanted to be one of those people sitting on the bus going to a job I didn’t

On Friday, May 20, 2016, DePaul Catholic welcomed twenty-six members of the DePaul Catholic community to share with the students the career path they have taken since high school graduation. The event was a huge success and was enjoyed by the students, faculty and presenters. flexibility provided by Novartis, she was able to be there when her family needed her most. Although Mark is missed terribly, Mary and her kids have learned to be joyful again. They have positively channeled their grief by participating in fundraising events for the New Jersey Sharing Network, raising over $20,000 together to date. “I’ve drawn strength from my family, friends and faith, and realized that I’m blessed beyond measure,” says Mary. “I’ve learned that as long as my kids are okay, I’m okay.”

In 2012, Mary KeaveneyNaughton, ‘82 made a decision to change careers, moving from a sales director role to a compliancefocused position. Less than a year later, her stay-at-home husband Mark passed away suddenly, leaving her alone to cope with single parenthood. Mary faced these challenges with courage and determination as she focused on helping her family survive and thrive. Using the support and

Nine years after a harrowing car accident left Joe Bellantoni blind, he will mark a milestone when he receives his MIT Executive MBA degree in June. It’s just the latest accomplishment in a journey from a near-death experience to a life that now includes leading a charity and running marathons.

At the age of 45, Bellantoni was unaware he had diabetes, until he passed out behind the wheel of his Jeep on a New Jersey highway in July 2007. At 60 miles per hour, he lost control of his car as it slid under a lumber truck in front of him, then popped back out.

Beside him in all these endeavors is his wife, Denise Bellantoni. The two met as teenagers in a New Jersey suburb in the early 1980s. As a high schooler, Bellantoni was already business-savvy. His intellect and drive later propelled him through the ranks to become chief financial officer of the Crystal Springs Golf Resort, while his wife stayed

“The top of my car was sheared off … and somehow my seat reclined, otherwise I would have been [decapitated],” said Bellantoni, who does not remember that day. He broke his neck and all of his ribs on his left side, crushed his face, bit off his tongue, punctured his lung, and severed his arm and pinky finger.

“I was watching the news, and shaking really hard … it was very disturbing and there was no sign of Joe,” she said. Three people were killed and hundreds more were injured in the bombings, and MIT police officer Sean Collier was shot and killed by the bombers while they were on the run days later.

After he was taken by helicopter to the hospital, the family’s older son Michael, a sophomore in college was told to say his goodbyes. Their younger son, Matthew, a sophomore in high school, was away at Boy Scout camp. Although his injuries were severe, Bellantoni recovered. When he left intensive care earlier than expected, and then left a rehabilitation facility earlier than expected, he was blind, but undaunted. Doctors could not give a reason for the blindness. Just eight weeks after his accident he returned to work, and Denise Bellantoni took over where her husband’s eyesight left off. Bellantoni taught her to use a computer, and with her help, he

But Bellantoni, who overcame diabetes to the astonishment of his doctors, was bored. In 2009, he picked up running. He started training for his first race, the New York City marathon, in less than nine weeks, and burned out his first treadmill at home. He discovered Achilles International, which provides volunteer runners to help people with disabilities and visual impairments navigate road races and other athletic events. That year he ran the New York City marathon with five Achilles guides. Since then, Bellantoni has run 25 marathons, including three ultramarathons, eight triathlons, and competed in one Ironman triathlon. Not

one to sit around, his wife laced up her running shoes, shed 40 pounds, and joined him in more than 100 races. BOSTON 2013 On April 15, 2013, Bellantoni was competing in the Boston Marathon with an Achilles International guide he had run with only once previously. Denise Bellantoni took advantage of VIP tickets and sat in the finish line bleachers. Around 11 a.m., Achilles International asked her to volunteer at its tent and she agreed. She checked her watch not long before 3 p.m. Because Bellantoni always trained on a treadmill, she said, “You can set a watch to him.” Just as she remarked to someone that her husband was probably about done with the race, the first of two explosions went off near the finish line. Initially, she thought it was a cannon in honor of Patriots’ Day, but when the second boom sounded seconds later, she knew something was wrong. Denise Bellantoni had no way to reach her husband. Cell phone service

Bellantoni and his guide had been less than a mile away when the bombs exploded. They were diverted from the finish line. “All of a sudden they stopped the race, and I thought maybe a car had hit somebody,” said Bellantoni, who did not hear the explosions. “Then, word started going around, and I started panicking because I knew Denise was at the finish line.” Bellantoni credited his guide for inadvertently saving him. His original guide had canceled at the last minute, and the second guide had to make several unexpected stops during the last few miles. The delays kept them from being at the finish line when the bombs exploded. “He’s like a cat with nine lives. He’s here for a reason,” Denise Bellantoni said. IGNORING THE LIMITS In 2010, the Bellantonis founded Blind Ambition Coalition, a nonprofit

foundation where blind and disabled people meet up to snow tube, hike, sail, cook, go to movies, and do other activities including triathlon clinics at the Crystal Springs Resort with Achilles International athletes to enhance their quality of life. Denise Bellantoni was inspired to start the organization after she met with a local blindness foundation and asked for guidance on what activities blind people could do. “They told me, ‘We have books on tape,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, and?’” she said. The couple got their sons involved, and today they all help coordinate activities, including barbecues at their home. In 2014 Bellantoni returned to Boston to run the marathon again and ran next to an MIT Sloan student. He was inspired to apply to the MIT Executive MBA program, a 20-month, executive schedule MBA degree program, especially because of his interest in entrepreneurship. EMBAs, who typically have significant work experience, remain in their jobs while

attending school for 26 weekends and four week-long modules. A CFO for more than 20 years, Bellantoni is now vice president of strategic planning and corporate development at Crystal Springs Golf Resort. In his new position, and with his new degree, he will do more special projects and consulting. “That’s all from my EMBA. When I come to class, I look for things to bring back to work. About 80 percent of my assignments have been work-related,” Bellantoni said. Each time Bellantoni attends a weekend session at MIT Sloan, his wife accompanies him to classes. She guides him around campus and types up notes for him. Classmates and faculty have been impressed with how far Denise Bellantoni has come in assisting her husband, who uses accessibility programs to read documents to him on his computer.

“I have not seen a stronger bond between two partners,” said Vladimir Konopelko, EMBA ’16. “Denise is Joe’s eyes and assistant, and she spends just as much time at MIT as him, just in a different capacity.” Konopelko lived with the couple during the winter of 2014-2015, and, after Denise Bellantoni installed a white board in the kitchen, the three of them worked on Data, Models, and Decisions problems for hours together. Bellantoni worked extra-long hours.

“Joe was a fabulous student by any measure, and his performance was made even more impressive by the fact that he did not have access to the large number of visuals we use in the courses I teach,” Repenning said. “It is a testament to Joe and Denise’s hard work and collaboration that he was able to get through the course so

successfully. We should probably be giving a degree to Denise as well!” “Denise has done a remarkable job in getting me through this whole thing,” Bellantoni said. He also credited his EMBA classmates, as well as MIT staff members for

Golf Before Sundown! On Thursday, September 8, 2016, DePaul Catholic High School hosted its first annual Nine and Dine event. Join me in a round of applause as we welcome back Tom Vigorito. Tom is here tonight with his family and friends as we celebrate and honor his accomplishments as a DePaul Football Player by officially retiring his number 22 jersey. Tom was a 1977 graduate and his successes on the football field lead him to be named a High School All-American. He continued his playing career at the University of Virginia and was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1981. As a member of the Dolphins, he played in Super Bowl 17 in 1982. Tom currently lives in Wayne, with his wife, Natalie and is on the Board of the Miami Project -a foundation started by Nick Buonocotti to cure paralysis.
