common bond – we are members of the Spartan Family. This connection is palpable each day as it permeates the halls and arguably the souls of each of us. Scholarship, faith and community, the pillars of a DePaul education, are modeled daily. This is due to the bonds shared by students and adults alike. Success may ebb and flow, but family truly lasts forever.

Letter from our President It is my pleasure to share with you the first edition of the Spartan Sentinel, a magazine for alumni, parents and friends of DePaul Catholic High School. Contained within are student success stories, highlights and accomplishments both in the classroom and on the athletic field, and information regarding the continued growth of this excellent school. In June, I will complete my second full year as President of DePaul Catholic. It is my honor and privilege to continue the legacy of faith-filled service and academic excellence started over 58 years ago. Leading the way as Northern New Jersey’s preeminent Catholic coed college preparatory school, DePaul Catholic continues to distinguish itself via the success of its alumni and current students. As we begin our strategic planning process, which will serve as a launching pad for future growth and development, I am confident the possibilities are limitless thanks to our supportive Board of Trustees, talented and dedicated faculty, committed parents and inspirational students. Regardless of your affiliation to DePaul Catholic, each of us is united by a

As you read the following pages, remember your time with your DePaul family. Consider a memory that still generates an immediate smile. Perhaps it was your first Mass freshman year or a championship victory. Hopefully it includes a shared connection with an adult, teacher or coach, a role model who had a positive impact on your life. Finally, I am nearly positive your memory will contain a classmate or two, individuals with whom you likely created lifelong memories. As I reflect on these past two years, my mind is already filled with lasting images of Spartans, the leaders of tomorrow, actively pursuing scholarship, faith and community. It is images of warm smiles in the morning, jubilation after success, and a deep sigh released at graduation that only comes after a job well-done. I invite each Spartan to return to Alps Road for a visit. While the bricks and mortar may have changed, DePaul Catholic’s core values remain steadfast. I wish each of you a blessed Spring and look forward to our paths crossing at one of our many upcoming events or school programs. St. Vincent DePaul…Pray for Us. Joseph M. Tweed President

scholarship The Student Information Commons marks one of DePaul Catholic High School’s first capital improvement projects since 2006, when the school’s former convent was renovated into classroom and office space. Flarity Hall is named in memory of Sr. Patricia Flarity, who was one of four Sisters of Charity who founded the school. She served the DePaul Catholic community for many years as a teacher, principal and volunteer.

Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli Gives Blessing At Student Information Commons Opening Facility Designed to Promote Academic Growth beyond the Classroom The Student Information Commons marks a new era in research and study opportunities at DePaul Catholic High School. The comfortable, amenityfilled space, designed for individual and group work, recently received a special blessing from Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli to mark its official opening. “Established to promote academic growth beyond the classroom, the Student Information Commons promotes a sense of ‘ownership’ among our students, which in turn keeps them engaged and motivated,” said Joseph Tweed, President. “The overall DePaul Catholic High School educational experience is now further enhanced by the addition of collegiatelevel services available at this centrally located study hub.”

individual study stations and access to technology-based research databases. In addition, glass-enclosed meeting/groupstudy rooms are available for staff and student use. Additional recent campus-wide improvements also include new exterior signage, memorial park benches throughout the grounds and the creation of an outdoor student dining area.

DPCHS recently marked the opening of its new Student Information Commons with a blessing from Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli (left) and a ribbon cutting. Joining Bishop Serratelli (left to right) are Joseph Tweed, DPCHS President; Br. William Dygert, Superintendent, Diocese of Paterson; and Kenneth Jennings, DPCHS Principal.

Funded through the Special Projects Campaign “Where Learning Begins,” the Student Information Commons was renovated by Donnelly Construction of Wayne, N.J.

Housed within the former Assembly Room, the space is designed as a research and study center featuring numerous student-friendly amenities. These include cushioned armchair desks, bistro-like seating areas, 2

Jake Flanagan has been named a Commended Student in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. The senior, who resides in Wayne, was acknowledged for placing in the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students who entered the annual competition by taking the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

When DPCHS’ Senior Theology and AP European History students recently toured the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, they literally entered international territory. While visiting the 18-acre site, which belongs to its 193-member states, the students toured the renovated General Assembly Hall, Security Council Chamber, Trusteeship Council Chamber, and the Economic and Social Council Chamber in the newly refurbished Conference Building. Guides also discussed how the U.N. addresses issues such as disarmament, peace and security, human rights and the Millennium Development Goals.

scholarship First 100 Days: Ken Jennings, Principal Although Ken Jennings joined DePaul Catholic High School last summer, he recently reflected on the first 100 days of the academic year. What brought you to DePaul Catholic High School? I had been at a smaller, all-girls Catholic high school for 12 years and the time was right to move on to a larger, coeducational Catholic high school. Of course, DePaul Catholic has an impressive reputation for its academics, activities and athletics. However, what struck me – from my very first visit – was the sense of being welcomed and accepted into a large faith-filled family. I wanted to be a part of helping make something that is already great, even better. As Principal, you wear many hats. What are they? I am an academic who collaborates with the faculty to prepare students for college, today’s global society and beyond. Ever the teacher, I had a chance to substitute teach Literature classes in

the fall. That was fun and humbling at the same time. There also is the ambassador role. My door is always open to current students, parents, prospective families, alumni, faculty, visitors, and whomever else might need my assistance. I also feel that I am one of the patriarchs of the DePaul Catholic family. Why does a faith-based Catholic school education go beyond the classroom? There is a reason our creed is Scholarship, Faith and Community. Academics, spirituality and service to others extend way beyond our students. There are countless volunteer opportunities for parents and alumni to get involved and they do. What are some of the achievements of which you are most proud, thus far? Thanks to feedback from our student, faculty and parent visionaries, there have been many milestones in a short period of time. Academically, we plan to introduce

AP Physics and Honors Geometry at the 9th grade level next year. We’ve also implemented a teacher/student advisory program, student activities period and rotating class schedule. The prospective student open houses and new student orientation programs have been retooled and even more SAT/PSAT prep programs have been added. There will be much more to come and I am looking forward to hundreds – thousands – more days here at DePaul Catholic.

Jennings, Principal. “In the classroom and beyond, these students exhibit scholarship, faith and community – the tenets of our school – each and every day.”

scholarship First-Year Robotics Team Advances to NJ Challenge Finals Students Build Vehicle to Navigate in Post-Earthquake Environment Juniors Lucas Warner of Wanaque and Philip Soltys of Butler recently completed the final round of the New Jersey Creative Design Challenge sponsored by Panasonic USA in cooperation with New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). The students are members of the school’s Robotics Team and competed in the Overall and Best Rookie Team categories. Lucas and Philip, who are advised by Science Department Chairperson Mr. Trotter, designed and constructed a vehicle capable of maneuvering a post-earthquake landscape to rescue individuals and extinguish fires. During the course of the challenge, the vehicle must successfully cross an unstable bridge or navigate an alternate route, collect water, extinguish a fire, deliver first aid kits and save an injured “survivor.”

“In order to achieve the success that they have, these first-year Robotics Team members have demonstrated innovative thinking and mastery of basic mechanical and electrical engineering concepts, as well as mathematical and physics skills,” said Trotter. “The Challenge poses a unique opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to creating a device that can help others – combining scholarship and service to others.” The NJCDC is a premier science and technology competition that recognizes and rewards exceptional achievements with special category prizes as well as scholarships to be used exclusively for college expense. Awards include $4,000 for first prize, $3,000 for second prize and $2,000 for third prize. The Best Rookie Team is the recipient of a $1,000 prize.

Freshman Fun Day Fun and games were the order of the day at DPCHS Annual Freshman Field Day. Members of the Class of 2018 participated in a wide range of activities and events designed to promote unity and teamwork.

scholarship Fast Forward Four Years: Inaugural 8th Grade Prep Students Now Members of Class of 2015 The following members of the Class of 2015 joined the DPCHS family as members of the inaugural 8th Grade Prep Class just five years ago. They are now looking ahead to the next chapter, reflecting on their years at DePaul Catholic. Emily Casagrand Hometown: Kinnelon “From Eighth Grade Prep to Senior Year, the teachers here have demonstrated a passion for their vocation and learning in general, which gives students an edge in their future studies.” Next stop: S.I. Newhouse School of Communication, Syracuse University Nicole DeHope Hometown: West Milford “Like many of my classmates, I found myself at DePaul when my school closed down. Since I had planned to be a Spartan as a freshman, 8th grade brought me here one year earlier. This experience exposed me to the high school classes, teachers and standards and made me a better student.” Next stop: Radiography School to specialize in Sonography Nick DePalma Hometown: Wayne “At DePaul, the faculty is different than at other schools. They encourage us in and out of the classroom to be the best person we can be – not just the best student.” 6

Next stop: Bloomsburg University to major in Business or Finance

Next stop: Providence College to major in Business/Marketing

Andrea Garcia Hometown: West Milford “Making the transition to high school was easier thanks to my Eighth Grade Prep year. I was able to take it all in and plan my high school path, from sports and activities to what classes I would take. I am most proud of my achievements in Spanish, which I will pursue in college.” Next stop: Majoring in Political Science with a minor in Spanish at Fordham University

Kyle J. Keaveney Hometown: Pompton Plains “I first heard about DePaul Catholic’s Eighth Grade Prep through my Parish Priest, Father Peter Clark, who was teaching at DePaul Catholic. The program exposed me to high school level courses, teachers and facilities while providing me with a smooth transition into my freshman year.” Next stop: Kutztown University to study Criminal Justice.

Tyler Hackes Hometown: Wayne “By starting out in the 8th Grade Prep, I gained a better understanding of what the teachers expected. This helped me mature into a better high school student and now a college-bound senior. While classes like Chemistry really challenged me, I also found my niche in history, physics and astronomy.” Next stop: Monmouth University to major in Psychology and Environmental Science

Joe Malyack Hometown: Wayne “I always knew I wanted to go to DePaul, so when the opportunity presented itself for 8th grade, I was glad to get a jumpstart. This opportunity made the transition to high school seamless. The teachers are not only passionate about their subject areas, they are committed to helping students succeed in all of their pursuits. ” Next stop: Math or Physics major at Vassar

Kyle Hartigan Hometown: Butler “The teachers really care about the students at DePaul and make you want to succeed. This was my experience when it came to Spanish, where I had some difficulty in Spanish 1 and 2. Thanks to them, I ended up with a good grade earned through hard work.”

Lou March Hometown: Wayne “Since my father is an alum, I have been hearing about DePaul Catholic my whole life. The 8th Grade Prep gave me the opportunity to turn what is usually a four-year experience into a five-year experience at a great school.”

The benefit of having exposure to high-school level math for five years has given me an advantage going into college.” Next stop: Passaic County Community College to major in Engineering or Math Brad Paterson Hometown: Caldwell “Once I was introduced to DePaul and shadowed here, I felt the 8th Grade Prep was a great opportunity and one of the best decisions I’ve made. Kristina Tomulich Hometown: Bloomingdale “Both of my older sisters attended DePaul, so I was sort of destined to come here. Unlike them, Eighth Grade Prep allowed me to make my own connections one year earlier with teachers who really care about students on a personal level.” Next stop: Lehigh University to major in Political Science with a specialization in Business or Broadcast Journalism

Matt Saberito Hometown: Ringwood “I felt like I had an edge over my fellow freshmen because of my 8th Grade Prep experience. It also allowed me to figure out which activities interested me the most.” Next stop: Quinnipiac University to major in Biology/Pre-Med Noelle Snyder Hometown: Kinnelon “After Eighth Grade, I had a level of confidence that made me want to succeed in my most challenging classes. While the teachers expect the highest level of work possible, they truly care and take the time to know your personality and capabilities.”

Ally Yoeckel Hometown: Kinnelon “DePaul 8th Grade Prep offered me highschool level academic opportunities that I would not have been able to experience. I was able to get involved in my school community sooner and explore classes I wanted to pursue in the future.” Next stop: College of the Holy Cross to major in Political Science/Pre-Law Francesca Zisa Hometown: Pompton Plains “The DePaul Catholic Eighth Grade Prep program gave me the confidence I needed to succeed in high school. community Alum, Parent, Teacher, Volunteer: Judy Broekamp Gorski, ‘’75 What is your history at DPCHS? As a member of the Broekamp family, I was here from 1971 to 1975. My three younger sisters, Joanne, Eileen and Denise also graduated from DePaul and we added a second generation of alum when our own children – 6 combined – attended. The latest will be my daughter Olivia and nephew Billy Hall, who are graduating this year. What are your fondest memories as a student? I grew up in Wayne and live only 1 ½ miles from my parents’ house – those of us with kids still do. As a student at DePaul, I was comfortable and felt like I belonged here. It really was an extension of home. In hindsight, what were some benefits you appreciate more, as an adult, today? Being a student expanded my geographic borders, so to speak. Before high school, everything centered on my hometown – where I lived, friends, former schools, etc. At DePaul, students came from so many different towns. I had friends from Ringwood, West Milford, Pequannock, and beyond. My world became a bigger place and I loved it. Of course, my parents who had to drive me to all these new places may not have liked that, but they always did it. Other than the personal ties, why DPCHS for your oldest daughter? When it was time for my daughter Katie to go to high school in 2005, my husband and I had to make a decision – DPCHS or his alma mater. All it took was one visit here and my husband was sold. That same feeling of belonging was still here. Every time I dropped her off in the morning, I knew she was where she was supposed to be. She excelled 12

socially, spiritually and academically. She made many friends and still keeps in touch with most of them. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from TCNJ and is now attending Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia pursuing a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. And your youngest daughter? My second daughter, Olivia who is graduating in June, absorbed her sister’s experiences and couldn’t wait to be a Spartan. She is doing equally as well as her sister, forging her own path. She has been challenged in her coursework and engaged in activities from start to almost finish. Although she has been accepted into all of the colleges to which she applied, she will be attending TCNJ. When did you join the faculty? I started working at DePaul as an art teacher in 2012. I teach Intro to Visual Arts, Visual Arts 2, Photoshop Essentials, Mixed Media, Art History, Portfolio, Drawing, Painting and Grade 8 Art. Working with the students, and the opportunity to help them learn to express themselves creatively, is very rewarding. In what capacity do you volunteer at DPCHS? When I joined the faculty, I graciously accepted the role of Parent Association President. Previously, I worked on the board as a member of the Calendar Raffle committee and arranged seating for the Tricky Tray when Katie was a senior. While Olivia was in school, I expanded my horizons to work on the decoration committee for the Tricky Tray – a natural since I am an art teacher, right? I also was involved with the scenery for the “Annie” production last year. On a different note, my husband and I have supported various fundraising efforts and attended several galas, when they were held.

What words of advice do you have for other alum, students and parents? It starts here – the foundation for life. We all have means of some sort, to give back and carry the tradition forward. Whether it be through financial giving or the donation of our own gifts, talents and time, it is up to us to set the example. Get involved not because you have to, but because you want to be a part of the community that is shaping your child.

About the DPCHS Parents’ Association The mission of the DePaul Catholic Parents’ Association is to enlist parent and community involvement in raising the necessary funds to maintain the school’s tuition base. This is accomplished through a variety of efforts including the Snack Stand Concession, Calendar Raffle, Spring Tricky Tray/Fashion Show and numerous other events that take place throughout the year. Spearheaded by volunteers whose children are currently enrolled at DePaul Catholic, the Parents’ Association also fulfills different ambassador and hospitality roles. We are grateful to all those who have volunteered, especially our officers and committee chairs, and look forward to seeing fresh faces in the coming months and years ahead!

community Let it Ride: DPCHS Hosts Casino Night

Seasons of Giving

Members of the DPCHS community recently took their shot at games of chance, while raising money for the Endowment for Academic Growth. Casino Night, which was recently held at The Venetian and hosted by entertainment company Tumbling Dice, featured Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, and Texas Hold ‘Em enjoyed by experienced gamers and novices alike.

During November and December, the DPCHS family joined together to help others in need. The Interact Club, sponsored by the Wayne Rotary Club, hosted its annual Food Drive and Adopt-a-Family Christmas project, which benefitted 25 families from the Fr. English Community Center. The school community also participated in a Day of Service at Straight and Narrow in Paterson, sorting Christmas donations from parishes throughout the Diocese of Paterson. Two Midnight Runs were also hosted, thanks to the generosity of donors. To view the photos from these events, visit the Spartans Serve 2014 – 2015 album.

Spartan Spirit DePaul Catholic is well known for the generous spirit of its parent community. It is a generosity that speaks of support and shared gifts. athletics Scholar/Athlete Balance Highlighted at First Annual Sports Beefsteak DPCHS hosted its First Annual Sports Beefsteak in the fall at The Bethwood in Totowa. The evening’s theme and keynote address focused on Scholar/Athletes – and the fact that the term “scholar” comes first. DPCHS alum and Board of Trustees member, Martin Vergara (01’), served as the guest speaker and shared his own experiences. While playing high school baseball and football at DPCHS, the Paterson resident also was a member of the National Honor Society and student government. Named the 2001 Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year, he earned the West Point Award for

athletic and academic excellence and was selected in the 15th round by the Cleveland Indians in the 2001 MLB draft. The right hander went on to play baseball at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a B.A. in Finance from the school’s prominent Mendoza College of Business. He also earned an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and currently serves as Vice President/Director of Sales Strategy for Morgan Stanley. Proceeds from the event went toward each attendee’s sport of his or her choosing.

Sports Wrap Up: Fall and Winter Seasons Across the board, the fall and winter sports seasons have been characterized by one of two common themes: rebuilding, due to a large number of players who graduated, or adding new titles that distinguished DPCHS and each respective program in their

sport. Although there is no “I” in team, congratulations to all of the players who also achieved individual, Passaic County, AllConference and/or All-State honors in their respective sports.

Tennis – Girls Under the direction of first-year coach and Spanish teacher Ms. Cortney DiRussa, the team gained experience against tough opponents like IHA, AHA and Paramus Catholic that will serve them well in the future. They also distinguished themselves as the first DPCHS team to compete in new UnderArmour uniforms.

Cross Country – Boys & Girls The fall season for the boys and girls teams was a rebuilding year in which many newcomers – a talented pool of freshmen – proved new team and personal bests are on the horizon. The team also welcomed new Assistant Cross Country/Track Coach Matt Bouroult, who joined the faculty in September in the History Department.

Cheerleading The DePaul Catholic Varsity Cheerleading Team returned to the UCC Fall Invitational Cheer Competition at FDU University, placing First Overall with a First Degree of Excellence in the Varsity Cheer/Dance Category. Additional honors included a “sweep” of the Cheer Olympics categories, in which each DPCHS stunt group earned trophies. The Junior Varsity and Freshman Cheerleading Squads also continue to spread the Spartan Spirit with pep and athleticism!

Football The Varsity Football Team captured its second consecutive Non-Public Group 2 State Championship with a 42-0 victory over Holy Spirit. Led by Head Coach John McKenna, the team plays one of the nation’s toughest regular-season lineups in the Big North Conference – United Division, where they had an 8-4 record. The Junior Varsity and undefeated Freshman teams also recorded impressive seasons, setting the stage for future success.

Soccer – Girls The future for Girls Varsity soccer looks bright, thanks to quality young players who contributed to the team’s 7-9-1 fall season. Advancing to the Passaic County Tournament Quarterfinals, they where defeated by this year’s champion Wayne Hills. They also reached the Non-Public North Jersey A Division quarterfinal round, falling to powerhouse and division champion Immaculate Heart Academy. Key wins were earned against Passaic, Eastside, PCTI, West Milford, Passaic Valley and Mother Seton. The pipeline of talent at the Sophomore and Freshman levels will only add to DePaul Catholic’s success on the pitch for many years to come.

Soccer – Boys Congrats to this year’s squad, which earned its second Passaic County Championship under the direction of “Passaic County Coach of the Year” Steven Beneventine. Finishing out the season with an impressive 12-4-1 record, the team was ranked 6th in North Jersey and 9th in the Big North Conference/NonPublic Division. In keeping with the program’s “The Year of the Spartans” theme, the Junior Varsity team’s 15-player roster finished the season with a 7-1-4 record.

Volleyball – Girls The Varsity team’s season was a time for cultivating new talent and team building. Key wins were recorded over Holy Angels as well as Passaic County counterparts Lakeland, Passaic, Kennedy, Eastside, Passaic Valley and PCTI high schools. They also won the Maryann Collura Tournament at William Paterson University and edged out highly ranked Bogota. The Junior Varsity and Freshman teams also demonstrated why they are the heirsapparent to DPCHS’ long-standing domination in the sport.

Basketball – Boys While competing in one of the state’s toughest leagues, the Varsity Boys team gained traction on the court with key wins against Clifton, Pompton Lakes, Lakeland, East Orange and Passaic. Coached by DPCHS Alum Ryan Hagen, who is in his third year, the team laid the groundwork for future success in the Big North.

Indoor Track – Boys & Girls Returning seniors Anthony Palmisano (sprints) and Jacqueline McDonald (throwing) led a young team of next-generation track and field athletes this season. Despite the harsh temperatures of December, January and February, the Boys and Girls teams trained indoors and outdoors, weather permitting. While competing against the region’s veterans, team members strived to surpass their own personal bests.

Basketball – Girls With the 5th Annual New Year’s Resolution Showcase under their belts, the Varsity Lady Spartans edged out Lakeland, Clifton, Pascack Valley, Passaic and Hawthorne Christian for key wins in regular season play. The young team is now looking ahead to next season and a pipeline of talent coming up through the Junior Varsity ranks.

Bowling – Boys The DePaul Catholic Boys Bowling team’s returning veterans led the charge in what was a rebuilding year. The team held its own in key Passaic County and Big North matchups. The team is coached by DP alum and math teacher Jennie Horwath.

Dance Team This year’s 15-member team was busy performing at pep rallies, basketball games and DPCHS special events while preparing for the upcoming NJ Dancers State Championship at Ramapo College. The team’s repertoire includes pom, jazz and hip hop genres and is coached by Rita Aboyoun. They’ll be showcasing their talents at upcoming lacrosse games as well.

Bowling – Girls This year’s Girls Bowling team had tremendous depth with a roster of standout seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen. Like the Boys team, the lady Spartans competed in the highly competitive Big North Division 1 under the guidance of Coach Horwath.

Hockey The 2014 – 2015 season was a time to plan for the future of DPCHS Hockey. With the graduation of numerous seniors, the team was unable to field a Varsity team this year. Instead, a shift in focus allowed new Head Coach Cody Inglis to concentrate on Junior Varsity’s rising stars of tomorrow.

Wrestling Heavily favored to reach new milestones, Wrestling is as much a team sport as it is an individual one. The team decisively won almost every match this season as well as the Passaic County Championship. In addition to winning by 130 points, individual county titles were earned in 10 of the 14 weight classes, with two additional second places. The team is coached by Keith Karsen.

Swimming – Boys With a strong roster of veterans returning this year, the team competed in the always-tough North Division 1 League. The team, coached by newcomer Nick Russo, also had to overcome other “deep” teams countywide. Key wins included the ousting of Mahwah and Passaic in their respective regular season meets.

Skiing At their home base of Mountain Creek, DPCHS’ Boys and Girls competed in this year’s Slalom season and recorded numerous personal bests under the direction of second-year coach Jim Backman.

Swimming – Girls The Girls team, which also is coached by Nick Russo and competes in the talent filled Non-Public Group A Division, regrouped this year by solidifying its talent base in preparation for coming seasons. The team recorded key wins over Passaic and Mahwah High Schools.

in memoriam Legendary High School Football Coach, Jack Jones, Passes Away at Age 77 he won more than 150 games and sent more than a dozen players to Division 1 programs and a handful to the NFL. However, his legacy is much greater than the number of athletes he helped advance to the next level. He is most remembered for the lives he touched, on the field and in the classroom.

Jack Jones’ coaching career, which spanned 48 years, included five different high schools and one university. After launching his career at St. Mary’s in Rutherford as an assistant football coach, his coaching path led to Immaculate Conception (Montclair), DePaul, Clifton, Columbia University, Paul VI, and eventually back to St. Mary’s in 2005. During his storied career, he earned two State Championships in football in 1974 (Immaculate) and in 1975 (DePaul). “There are some people who are college coaches. Some are pro coaches,” Jones said. “I am a high school coach.” As a head coach,

In addition to being a mentor to many who made their way to the National Football league, Coach Jones was a mentor and friend to those who made a career out of football in a different way. DPCHS’ own Joe Lennon and John Merritt (’71) began their football coaching careers under the direction of Coach Jones at Immaculate Conception and DePaul, respectively. Both are grateful for the lessons they learned while working side-by-side with Coach Jones, and for the guidance he provided them for the next 40+ years. “There were two seasons,” Jones said. “The season you coached the kids and you won games. The second season is when you try to get the kids into college and try to get them as much money as you can for their parents so they can get an education.”

Pat Fox

In December, 2014, DePaul Catholic lost a special member of its family, Pat Fox. Pat, a past parent, worked in the cafeteria and touched the lives of students for the past 36 years. She and her husband, Bill, oversaw the freshman cafeteria. She was an integral part of everyone’s day and is greatly missed by students, faculty, staff and administrators.

As a tribute to Coach Jones’ legacy, a donation can be made to the DePaul Catholic High School Football program in Jack Jones’ memory. Simply visit the website www. depaulcatholic.org and click on the “Make a Gift” button. Jack was truly a father figure to all his players and like a father he wanted all of his players to succeed, to be happy, to have a faith in God and to dream big dreams… but it did not stop there… from there Jack would work hard in every way possible to help his players fulfill those dreams. Although Jack is no longer with us, his spirit lives on through all of the players he coached and all the lives he touched and is evidenced as we his former players raise our kids and coach our teams, trying to emulate the values and coaching techniques that we learned from Jack. The older I get, the more I appreciate the man Jack was and the more I want to be like him. Jack is and will continue to be missed very much. — Ted Gaffney, ‘82

Coach Rick Guttroff

Coach Rick, a member of the DePaul Catholic baseball coaching staff for 15 years under the leadership of Joe Lennon, won an astounding 216 games and three Passaic County championships. Among his most memorable games was coaching a 2001 county game in which Martin Vergara pitched against Mike Irwin of Manchester. Combined there were over 40 strikeouts and both pitchers hit home runs. Most importantly, however, DePaul won! A graduate of St. Peter’s University (B.A.) and St. John’s University (MBA), Rick was a resident of Wayne, NJ.
