For most students, the freshness of their groceries depends on the selection at Dominick’s that week. However, that may no longer be the only source for local produce after the DePaul Urban Farming Organization’s (UFO) urban farm breaks ground in May. The new organization was developed in the fall by students from Barbara Willard’s Urban Agriculture class who felt the need to address sustainability on another local level. The group’s farm will make temporary use of the purchased lot at the corner of Belden and Bissell Avenues, just blocks away from the Lincoln Park Student Center and across from Wish Field. “It is a natural fit with the university’s newly-launched Institutional Sustainability Plan,” said James Montgomery, associate
Instagram has officially arrived. This social media application allows users to apply filters to photos that they snap with their mobile devices and share with friends. Wildly popular, the Instagram application has been popping up on our Facebook feeds for some time now. Although Facebook has a normal photo upload option, many users are switching their primary photography outlet to the new Instagram format. DePaul University even has its own account, username: depaulu. The photo-sharing application first emerged in October 2010 and in the short two years of its existence has grown to gigantic proportions. Last week, Facebook purchased the program for $1 billion, stirring up excitement from Instagram’s many users.

FEST 2012, just around the corner
By KIERSTON SINKO Contributing Writer
Mark the calendar, because May 14 is the Big Reveal for FEST 2012. The DePaul Activities Board is working hard to keep the excitement going throughout students at DePaul. According to Lizmarie Palomo, the FEST Coordinator, DAB is currently in the middle of the contracting process for the artists. Previous artists that have performed at FEST include Chromeo and Wiz Khalifa. DAB is concerned about student interest in FEST 2012, so they have hosted other smaller events in preparation. They have had three promotion events titled “Fest Forum”
where students have been able to participate in artist surveys, get free goodies, and give their own opinion on FEST. The student survey for musical artists included Lupe Fiasco, Snoop Dogg, Damian Marley, Cage the Elephant and Janelle Monae. “This year, we are trying to make FEST a time for fun, dancing, letting loose and making memories,” said Palomo. FEST is held each year in the Lincoln Park Campus Quad, and events will start at 6:30 p.m. In addition to FEST 2012, DAB will be hosting a FEST AfterHours party in the Student Center room 120. As soon as the lights are off in the Quad, the party will move to the Student Center. With artists such as Andy Grammar, Battles, Kid Sister
and the Cataracas on the student survey, the after party is building up to be as big as FEST itself. “Not only am I excited for the music, but it’s another opportunity to make more friends at DePaul,” said freshman computer science major, Billy Kraft. Although the NATO Summit will be in Chicago, (which have changed the date of FEST from the usual Memorial Weekend to June 1) extra security measures will not take place at FEST. However, the security team is keeping these events along with many others on their radar during FEST 2012. “[Security has] been working with us for the past two years so they are fully aware See

professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Studies. “As DePaul focuses on becoming a more sustainable institution with respect to its curriculum operations, research and community engagement, issues of food quality and food access are vital elements. The farm allows us to begin addressing these issues.” The farm will encourage all students and faculty to learn about urban agriculture and connect classroom learning with urban nature and community engagement. The group hopes the project will also educate the public about how to establish and enjoy sustainable food production systems. “Students will have the opportunity to conduct research on various aspects of food production, besides getting their hands dirty and playing with worms,” said See
