Devonport C elebrates White Night is unlike any other event in Auckland. Presented by Auckland Arts Festival, White Night is one night of arts experiences across a huge diversity of venues, encompassing public space and galleries, museums and other cultural institutions across the Auckland region. It’s an opportunity for local communities to celebrate their creativity and to engage locals and visitors alike in their creative venues and events. Devonport celebrates its own distinctive identity as a vibrant creative hub full of great arts and music through a diversity of events taking place in arts and community centres, the local theatre and cafes. During Devonport’s White Night local participants will include: the Depot Artspace, Devonport Community House, Flagstaff Gallery, The Vic, Paradox Books, Devonport Community Choir, Devonport Folk Music Club, and cafes Corelli’s, Bette’s and the Esplanade.

The Driving Force Group exhibition across a variety of disciplines A perennial question regarding the arts is; what inspires creative people to work at their practice, often without the usual gratification that motivates, or simply sustains, most of us, such as a secure livelihood or the ostensible freedom to achieve a ‘work-life balance’? Over the years the Depot Artspace has observed in artists across all disciplines a drive to create that transcends others regarded as more legitimate, such as social and economic imperatives. In The Driving Force, Nicholas J Boyd, Paris Kirby, Jermaine Reihana, Sash and Yonel Watene, explore (and articulate) the characteristics or qualities that motivate creative practice through painting, installation, sculpture and assemblage. For these 5 diverse emerging artists who work across a variety of disciplines, art is their calling, commitment or passion, their raison d’etre, something without which their life would cease to have significant meaning, since this is what ‘they were born to do.’ In curating The Driving Force the Depot Artspace also wants its audiences to experience something of this intangible aspect of creative practice that not only puts them in touch with the vast spectrum of individual creative thought, but shows that it is possible to think in a different way from the packaged world view with which we are presented as ‘reality’.

Nicholas J Boyd started making art at 21 when his friend showed him some of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s paintings. Boyd is very inspired by nature, especially clouds. He is highly interested in the mind; composing and reworking his paintings in his head over a couple of weeks or months. “As long as I’m buzzed in the moment of doing, in any aspect of life, I keep going. Maintaining this feeling is the ultimate goal.” Paris Kirby from Auckland, New Zealand, is currently studying
her Master of Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design. Her research delves into the history of New Zealand landscape painting, the history of New Zealand tourism advertising, environmental concerns, the spectacular, the decorative, and utopian theory within fine arts discourse.
Jermaine Reihana is a Maori visual artist focusing on painting. He re-works traditional Maori narratives with a stylistic re-interpretation of customary carving, tukutuku and kowhaiwhai design conventions.
Sash grew up in Northland (Te Tai Tokerau) and is presently living in Kaikohe. Art is her passion and the key to her spiritual, emotional and mental wellbeing. Sash has her own aesthetic, and her artistic flare and creativity are strengthened by the essence of her inner mauri, and accentuated by the external pleasure she receives from seeing people smile as they admire her creations and comment that it’s been ‘Sashed’ (aka pimped).
Yonel Watene is a self-taught, award-winning Auckland based artist. In The Driving Force Yonel Watene re-explores contemporary processes strongly linked to outsider art practices aligned to traditional methodology. The main goal is to question any and all traditions we hold dear by presenting the public with new, daring pathways.
The Devonport Folk Music Club has met regularly since its formation in 1966 and since taking up residency in 1970 at the Bunker on Takuranga/Mt. Victoria, it has become famous as a favourite venue with musicians, singers and storytellers both nationally and from all around the world.

Roaming Choir The Devonport Community Choir will stop at each venue and perform. Devonport Community Choir was founded in 2012 as a choir for people in Devonport and surrounding suburbs to enjoy. With no auditions, and no requirement of any particular level of commitment, this choir truly is for everyone! One of the things that gives the Devonport Community Choir its community feel is that almost every song in their repertoire is suggested by choir members. Anyone can put a note in the “suggestions box” during rehearsal night, which the leader chooses from whenever new songs are needed. Devonport Community Choir is enthusiastically led by Helene Piper, who holds a Masters Degree in singing, vocal coaching and choir conduction from the Royal School of Music in Denmark. She has almost twenty years’ experience conducting various choirs that differ in size, level and musical style.

Create a work of art and/or design (basically anything!) using junk mail and a limited range of tools i.e. sellotape, stapler, hole punch and string. You have just one hour to create your masterpiece! The winner will be selected by our eco-friendly judges on the night. Individuals or teams of up to 4 people are invited to participate in the challenge.

Finding Vivian Maier Movie about the mysterious street photographer When John Maloof bought an unmarked box of undeveloped negatives in 2007, he stumbled upon one of the 20th century’s most important troves of street photography and self-portraiture. ‘Finding Vivian Maier’ follows Maloof as he embarks on a quest to reveal the woman behind the Rolleiflex camera: eccentric nanny Vivian Maier, who took tens of thousands of photos of everyday urban life – and showed them to no one. Part retrospective, part detective story, ‘Finding Vivian Maier’ is a touching portrait of a woman haunted by her past. For a contemporary age obsessed with self-portrait photography, Vivian Maier was a pioneer.

We will be hosting an installation with works by legendary ‘80s skateboarder turned sculptor, Lee Ralph. The installation is curated by Yonel Watene and will include video, sculpture and paintings.

Contours Sculpture exhibition, artist talk and demonstration French born Olivier Duhamel is a respected figurative sculptor. Duhamel has acquired a masterful command of the figurative form. His bronze figurines and laminated sculptures have won awards, including the Wallace Arts Trust, 2013. He teaches creative workshops, publishes popular art manuals, offers pencil drawings and life casting services on commission and runs a life drawing class on Waiheke Island. For Auckland’s prestigious White Night event, Olivier Duhamel will be conducting an artist talk and demonstration about his process. Flagstaff Gallery provides a friendly, relaxed environment in which to make a wide variety of quality art accessible to all.
