PUBLIC PROGRAMMING MEETING 2PM PUBLIC MEETING 4PM

The London Borough of Lewisham was one of only two London boroughs with no dedicated cinema. Deptford Cinema is a not for profit, community led project that was designed to rectify this with the building of a new, affordable and accessible venue for film and arts on Deptford Broadway. Deptford Cinema is the oldest operating cinema in Lewisham. The cost of a cinema ticket today can be upwards of £12 and even more when you factor in the travel for Lewisham residents to nearby Greenwich or Southwark, or central London. It is increasingly no longer a viable night out. Cinema should be for everybody and that’s the ethos of Deptford Cinema, providing accesible and interesting cinema, that’s also affordable. Deptford Cinema is being built by the community, for the community. Although our 40 seat cinema is open for business and fully functional, we are all in the process of completing our darkroom, gallery space and a fully licensed cafe/bar. The programming of events and films is open to anybody to show the films they want, and the cinema will be a hub for all things film in Lewisham. With our regular programming gaining momentum, there is still a lot of work to do, especially with finishing the internal fit out of the space. If you think you can help out and would like to get involved and become a part of the cinema, it’s easy: come along to one of our Sunday meetings, held each week within the cinema at 4PM or one of our programming meetings (Sundays fortnightly at 2PM). The organisation has no hierarchy, each volunteer is on equal footing and all decisions are made as a group at these regular meetings.

Séverine, a young and beautiful housewife, is unable to share physical intimacy with her husband despite their love for each other. Her sexual life is restricted to elaborate fantasies involving domination, sadomasochism, and bondage. Séverine (now Belle de Jour) begins working in a brothel from two to five o’clock each day, returning to her unsuspecting husband in the evenings. Deptford Cinema and the ICA proudly present a retrospective of the films of Luis Buñuel (1900–1983), celebrating his genius, irreverence and unique poetic style.

Pablo Larraín / 2012 / Chile / 118 min

In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote YES or NO to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the NO persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. Against all odds, with scant resources and under scrutiny by the despot’s minions, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free. Continuing our season of award winning films from Latin America, No, directed by Pablo Larrain won the Art Cinema Award at Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes and the Golden Coral for Best Film at the Havana Film Festival .

Traveling to accept an honorary degree, Professor Isak Borg—masterfully played by veteran director Victor Sjöström—is forced to face his past, come to terms with his faults, and make peace with the inevitability of his approaching death. Through flashbacks and fantasies, dreams and nightmares, Wild Strawberries dramatizes one man’s remarkable voyage of selfdiscovery. This richly humane masterpiece, full of iconic imagery, is a treasure from the golden age of art-house cinema and one of the films that catapulted Ingmar Bergman to international acclaim

Big Build WEekend Day #1 06.02.16 Day #2 07.02.16

Over the recent months, our volunteers have decided on a structure for the continued build of the venue, that will hopefully have more people engaged and push the project forward. We have planned a full weekend of building this weekend, the 6th and 7th of February. Anybody and everybody is welcome and you have no need of special skills or your own equipment (although if you have them, they will definitely be welcome). In terms of the number of volunteers needed? Quite frankly, the more than merrier!

how do i get involved? It’s simple, you can e-mail BUILD@DEPTFORDCINEMA.ORG just to let us know you might be popping by. However, you are most welcome to just turn up at the session and see if you can lend a hand.

DON’t I NEED SPECIALIST SKILLS OR TOOLS? If you do have special skills or tools, they are always welcome, however don’t worry if not as everything we need is on site and there will always be something you can help with or learn. Keep an eye out for further details such as timings during the day on our social media and website. Further details will be sent out via our newsletter, which you can sign-up to on our website at www.deptfordcinema.org

THE CAIMAN

Nanni Moretti / 2006 / Italy / 112 min The Caiman is part of our mini-season in February and March highlighting Contemporary Italian Cinema. Bruno Bonomo was a famous producer of b-movies in 70s; after a long hiatus, following the commercial fiasco of “Cataratte”, Bonomo is going to be signed by RAI in order to produce a film about Cristoforo Colombo’s homecoming. This film within a film is centred on the figure of Italy’s prime minister and media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi, a subject so controversial that even the public television refuse to produce it.

As usual, the bar will be open, serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Entry to the evening is free but there is a £1 charge per person for the quiz to help cover costs.

22.02.16 After our successful premiere quiz in Deptford Cinema, we are returning in a regular bi-monthly slot.
