MESSAGE FROM THE COURSE DIRECTOR It gives me a great deal of pleasure to welcome you to the 25th Annual Update in Adult Medicine. It is hard to believe that we have been on this journey of learning, discovery and friendship for a quarter of a century. Twenty-five years ago, the Chair of Medicine, Paul Armstrong, had the vision to create an outstanding educational event for our hardworking community of family physicians. All the chairs of medicine since then, including Tom Marrie, John Meddings and Barbara Ballermann have been in full support of this conference. Paul’s original vision was three fold. Firstly, to bring world class medical education in adult medicine to our family physicians right here in Edmonton, with high impact and at low cost. Secondly, to allow junior faculty to develop their presentation skills and increase their exposure to the community that they serve. Finally, and most importantly, to bridge the gap between academic medicine and our community colleagues. I believe that we have achieved all three admirably. This meeting would not be possible without the continued support of you, the audience. Many of you have attended every year. It has been a lot of fun and I have made many friends. I thank you for your support and for trusting me with the role of Course Director. However, at the end of the day, we are here to serve the public and to provide exemplary care for our patients. It is my hope that by attending this conference you will be better prepared to achieve that goal. In the words of Francis, W. Peabody, “Time, sympathy and understanding must be lavishly dispensed, but the reward is to be found in that personal bond which forms the greatest satisfaction of the practice of medicine. One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.” Yours Sincerely,

2

Peter Hamilton, MD
