MEET THE SIX
Meet the Derby Six and find out what they like to do. Stix loves Markeaton Park, he enjoys the open space and playing Mini Golf. Clix is loving learning to cook and enjoying new activities in the free holiday and food sessions. Trix and Kix, love cycling at the Alvaston Park BMX track and Derby Arena indoor track. You will find Vix at Derby’s Libraries taking part in the Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge, but she also likes to go to the Coding Club with Flix. All the Derby Six are looking forward to attending with their families Darley Park Concert and the Pantomime at Derby Arena, which is Aladdin. Lets find out more about out SIX…
Clix is the leader of The Six, she finds out about all the great activities on offer in Derby and posts them on the website and social media.
Kix is into all kinds of sport. Come and join him at Derby Arena and Springwood Leisure Centres for badminton, footie and the Junior gym.
Trix loves cycling and spends loads of time at Derby Arena where he can ride the 42 degree track and keep fit in the gym and on the courts.
Flix loves going to the cinema and the theatre. Lucky there’s some great shows coming up in Derby.
Vix loves to find out about new things. She’ll be doing loads of cool activities in Derby Libraries including computer programming at Code Club.
Stix hangs out in the park all the time because there’s so much to do. Markeaton Park has a great play centre and he loves the BMX track at Alvaston.

HOLIDAY ACTIVITY AND FOOD IN DERBY SUPPORTING DERBY COMMUNITIES The Derby Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) Programme aims to provide support for families in Derby by providing free activities and meals during school holidays and beyond. The aims of the sessions are to provide each young person attending: • access to enriching activities that they may not otherwise be able to attend • enjoy learning new skills • meeting friends and socialising, reducing social isolation during school holidays • have a healthy and nutritious meal • take part in physical and creative activities • build greater knowledge of health and nutrition. The Holiday Activities and Food programme is available to children that are eligible for free school meals during summer, December and the Easter holidays. Providers will accept all families to take part in their activities, but charges may apply and places are subject to availability. Providers are subject to change, for the current list of providers visit the website at derby.gov.uk/derbyhaf

COACHING There are lots of activities for children to take part in at our leisure facilities, including term-time coaching courses. Some courses are delivered by our own staff and others by clubs. These courses will encourage children to be active and learn new skills. Coaching courses include, gymnastics, martial arts, football, track cycling and trampolining. Our gymnastic programme aims to ensure that every participant achieves their full potential whilst enjoying our coaching programme, which follows the British Gymnastics award scheme. Our sessions introduce your little one to gymnastics in a fun and challenging way by exploring the soft play and gymnastics equipment. Derby has over 300 parks and open spaces. They’re jam-packed with things to do as a family, from play areas and skate parks to nature reserves and a butterfly garden. Our parks are a great place to get healthy; they’re open to everyone and are free to use. Stay active by taking a walk, playing football or golf, or using our adiZone free outdoor gyms. Maintaining an allotment is great for keeping the children busy and there’s lots to be learnt about where food comes from and how to nuture and care for plants. We’ve got plenty on offer to keep you and your under 5s occupied. From walks in the park or bouncing in our soft play sessions to storytime at the library or laughing along with our family panto.
DERBY ACTIVE Lots to enjoy at Springwood Leisure Centre where we have Bouncy castle and soft play sessions on Thursdays at 9.30am, and the Springtots pre-school gymnastics programme.
LIBRARIES Children of all ages are welcome in our libraries, even the youngest babies can have their own library ticket! We have board books, picture books, story books, audiobooks, ebooks, and much, much more! Bookstart is a national scheme giving free books to pre-school children – find out more on our website. We run free Storytime and Rhymetime sessions - visit our website for details of when and where each session takes place.
PARKS A walk in the park is a great way to keep fit and meet up with friends. Most of our parks have play areas, the Mundy Play Centre at Markeaton Park has the most on offer, with the pirate ship, paddling pool and the Orangery Café to take a break. Join Buggy Babes, a great way to meet new mums and get fit at the same time at Darley Park.
DERBY LIVE Your child’s first visit to the theatre is a magical time. We have a range of family shows throughout the year. There’s also fun for the whole family with the annual pantomime at Derby Arena, for 2022 it’s Aladdin.

Join the Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge 2022, inspired by science and innovation. Read six books of your own choice and collect rewards as you go. Taking part helps children become confident and enthusiastic readers and supports their learning. The Challenge starts on Sat 9 Jul and there will be free events in Derby libraries – a Science Party delivered by Sublime Science and ‘Meet the Oceans’ with author Caryl Hart.
We promote a safe, welcoming, accessible environment at our Homework Clubs and provide access to books, computers and printing to help children and young people with their homework and study assignments.

RHYME TIMES Free half hour sessions of rhymes and songs - a great way of helping your child acquire good language skills and can really help with their future learning.

CODING FOR 8-14 YEAR OLDS Code Clubs are run by trained staff and volunteers at Alvaston, Mickleover, Normanton and Riverside libraries and teach children basic computer programming. New 20 week courses starting in September and March. We also run a four week chargeable course, Code PLUS offering fun handson STEM activities combining code, design and electronics using MakeyMakeys, microbits and Raspberry Pi. Derby City Council urgently needs foster carers to provide care, support and a loving home to the city’s most vulnerable children.
Could you change a life and be a foster carer? Fostering is an enriching and rewarding experience for you, your family and the children you will care for.
