100 YEARS OF QUALITY FROM GERMANY From postman to innovator – Kalkhoff has been writing cycling history since 1919. Over the course of 100 years, we have become not only one of the leading bike brands in Germany but also a global trendsetter in e-mobility. Today, with all its history, Kalkhoff stands more than ever for innovation, quality and commitment to Germany as a centre of manufacturing. Kalkhoff bikes are still developed, assembled and tested in the company's own laboratory in Cloppenburg – and help us deliver on our slogan of “Pure Freedom” in over 30 countries across the world. Our trademark is continuous innovation. Kalkhoff has always led the way – rather than simply going with the flow – as evidenced by the company starting serial production of e-bikes as early as 2007. This was duly followed by the launch of the first serial-production e-bike with a mid-mounted motor and fully integrated/ removable battery in 2015. Not to mention the development of pioneering shiftsensor technology for really smooth gear changes and less stress on materials. The models for 2020 represent the next milestone for the Kalkhoff range. It is a case of even more emotion, even more freedom and – above all – even more integration. This means adding a new, premium class to the e-Trekking and e-City segments, as well as pushing the boundaries of what is technically feasible as things currently stand, including down to the finest details – such as hydraulic brakes completely integrated into the handlebars. HISTORY

THE EARLY DAYS

THE 1950S AND 1960S

From postman to bike specialist. In 1919, the then 16-year-old rural postal worker Heinrich Kalkhoff founds the company we have come to know as Kalkhoff from his parents’ house in Cloppenburg. His idea is simple yet brilliant. Inspired by the many mechanical issues he has to contend with on his round, he soon realises there is a high demand for tyres and other bike parts. Business is good – so good that Kalkhoff even starts to produce entire bikes from 1927. The start of a new era.

THE 1970S

Bikes experience something of a renaissance due to the oil crisis and with people becoming more aware of environmental and health issues. Even Uschi Obermaier, the iconic figure from Germany's counterculture, can be seen riding a Kalkhoff. Cycling is cool, and the keep-fit craze sweeping society gives Kalkhoff another tremendous boost around this time – even after the death of founder Heinrich Kalkhoff on 25 September 1972. He leaves the company in good shape, and it continues to develop strongly in the next few years.

Following a short break during the Second World War, bike production picks up again in the 1950s. As cars are rare at the time, there is tremendous demand for transport on two wheels. These are golden years for the company: for a time, 1,200 people are employed at the factory, making up to 5,000 frames a day. Bikes are delivered to 32 different countries, with Kalkhoff's handiwork – made in Germany – even proving competitive in East Asia.

THE AGE OF THE E-BIKE

TRADITIONAL MEETS MODERN

2007 sees Kalkhoff’s first serial-production e-bike leave the factory. This provides further proof of the company’s ability to remain on trend. 2009 marks the 90th anniversary of the brand, with its rich tradition, while Derby Cycle continues to develop apace: Derby Cycle Holding GmbH is now the largest bike manufacturer in Germany in terms of sales. With the brands Kalkhoff, Focus, Raleigh, Univega and Cervélo, Derby Cycle sells almost half a million bikes a year – including over 100,000 e-bikes and pedelecs, making it the leader in this sector within Germany.

Kalkhoff is celebrating its centenary in 2019. 100 years in which we have consistently helped to shape the evolution of the bicycle and the various eras of cycling. We are proud of our history - a history that is far from over. It is this blend of expertise with a strong sense of tradition and progressive innovation that will enable us to continue to be a driving force in the German bicycle industry in the future. A PASSION FOR ALL BIKES Jรถrn Werel is a Kalkhoff team leader in Engineering & Design, a team of engineers, designers and technical draughtsmen who steer the Kalkhoff e-bikes from the drawing board to series release. In this interview he provides an insight into his work in Cloppenburg.

Jรถrn, you are responsible for the development of large parts of the Kalkhoff range. What stages does a bicycle go through at Kalkhoff before it reaches completion?

Where does your inspiration for your day-today work with bicycles come from?

From the conceptual creation of the bikes to the ideas, design, prototyping and series production, this is an incredibly broad spectrum. Firstly, I am responsible for coordinating staff and take care to ensure that development projects run smoothly. But it is precisely this variety that makes this work so exciting. To what extent has the success of the e-bike in recent years made the development of bicycles more complex?

I've been crazy about bikes since I was a child. I rode my first BMX race at the age of five, and since then I have developed an enthusiasm for bicycles of all kinds, from MTB and road cycling to touring. That helps a lot, of course.

Quite simply, we can improve the products directly on site in the test laboratory with very experienced testers. As soon as we have any results, we then have the opportunity to make a direct assessment and implement it in design.

And that's the inspiration you bring to your team?

The e-bike market is currently continuing to develop rapidly. What are the biggest development challenges that you face?

Exactly. We are always talking together about how we can improve things - such as the design, function, integration or safety of the wheels. We draw our inspiration from many different directions - for example by questioning end customers, holding

TESTCENTRE We are especially proud of our in-house test centre. Kalkhoff has one of the most modern and largest test laboratories in Europe. Frames, forks, seat supports, wheels, brakes and other components are tested on 30 machines spread over 40 square metres - up to 2,000 parts a year. Three engineers constantly monitor developments. Our objective is to achieve the highest quality for the most stringent requirements. Where necessary, we therefore set the testing requirements higher than prescribed by the official standards. The result is a harmonious overall picture that more than deserves the label "Engineered in Germany".

WHEEL PRODUCTION

PRE-ASSEMBLY

In order to have an efficient manufacturing process, the pre-assembly is an important part of production. At individual workplaces, frames are straightened, handlebars pre-assembled and forks prepared for installation.

ASSEMBLY

Ten conveyor belts, 170 employees involved in final assembly alone, one bike finished every three and a half minutes and up to 2,000 units a day. At its own factory in Cloppenburg, Kalkhoff develops and produces e-City, e-Urban, and e-Trekking bikes with the utmost care and attention.

The components for the wheels are coordinated intuitively and provided with matching colours and designs. We only use high-quality powder coatings in our in-house painting and decorating department, which are applied in several layers. For a particularly long-lasting brilliant finish.
