Case Study Sumedha Nishantha Rambukwella Sumedha came to the University of Derby to study a Masters in International Business Management. Although other universities were offering the same courses Sumedha found the modules, price and location of Derby really appealing. “It is affordable compared to other universities without compromising the quality of the study. At the same time, it is located within the heart of UK, so reaching any part of the country is not a problem.” Sumedha found that modules were covered in great detail; smaller classes are beneficial because they enable the students to have the lecturer’s personal attention. “Lecturers at Derby are extremely supportive and very friendly and my class mates are truly international. Being exposed to various cultures here in Derby while studying has already helped me and it will continue to help me when I start working in an international environment.” The staff in the International Student Centre (ISC) supported Sumedha from when he first applied to the University of Derby, contacting him early on to arrange accommodation and for someone to meet him on his on arrival at the airport. When Sumedha has completed his Masters he is planning to start a business with a colleague, and is already getting support from the University to develop and plan the business idea. He developed the concept from his final dissertation and hopes to gather more information as he progresses with his research. ‘Although other universities were offering the same courses, Sumedha found the modules, price and location of Derby really appealing.’
