Case Study Uzoma, Kelechi Chidi A former international student from the University of Derby has gone on to become a Production Geologist at the recently formed Seplat Petroleum Development Company Limited in his native Nigeria. After looking into Geoscience related courses, Kelechi found that most universities could only offer him places on Oil and Gas Engineering or Geochemistry Masters. “They offered me a Masters degree based on my first degree in Industrial Chemistry and explained to me that changing disciplines from this to Geosciences would be difficult. The University of Derby however was much more supportive and made me a conditional offer to study the MSc Applied Petroleum Geoscience, provided I completed four undergraduate modules, which I successfully achieved.” Kelechi added, “The staff and students made me feel welcome and I had a great time at the University. Moving to a new country was quite daunting at first, but the support that I received during my stay could not have been better. I would recommend the University of Derby without hesitation, and I already have, as one of my friends is currently studying for his MSc here.”
Kelechi believes that his studies have been one of the main factors in his success, “My degree has been of immense value to my career. When I returned home after completing my programme I was able to secure my new job as a Production Geologist.”
