About the course Applied Criminology uses a range of disciplines to examine criminality and the criminal justice system. You'll be introduced to the historical and contemporary perspectives of criminology before exploring the legal, psychological and sociological aspects of criminality. You'll discover particular areas of interest, such as criminal law and evidence, police powers, crime and gender, offences against children, feminist perspectives and domestic abuse.
How you’ll learn Applied Criminology at Derby is a very practical course. Not only will you learn through lectures, tutorials and group work but you'll also take part in role plays, applied demonstrations and project work. You'll go on visits to criminal justice agencies and benefit from expert input from key practitioners in the field. You'll be assessed by coursework, project work, group work, presentations and portfolios.

Your career The Applied Criminology course gives you transferable skills that equip you for a wide range of careers, such the Crown Prosecution Service, the Police Force, probation services, social work or youth offending agencies. You can also continue your studies to masters level on the MSc Criminal Investigation or the MSc Cybercrime and E-Investigation, taking advantage of the 10% discount you’ll receive as a University of Derby graduate.
Additional information With joint honours, you can study for an honours degree in two or even three subjects. You can study Applied Criminology as either a major, joint or minor pathway.
