Independent Study
Options Teaching and learning You will learn through lectures, seminars and work-based activities. You will also have placements in either early years, primary, secondary or tertiary education. There are no exams, so you will be assessed through a range of reflective tasks, essays, creative presentations, portfolios and reports. You will be required to apply the theory to your practical experiences. What you will cover To make sure you are fully prepared for work, throughout the course you will undertake a work placement for a minimum of two days per week.
I have found my experience at university life changing. There are lots of opportunities to network and meet new people.
Children’s and Young People’s Development
Autumn
Duration and mode of study: You will study this course for three years full time. If you have a relevant foundation degree, you can take this course as a ‘top up’ and study the final stage part time for 15 months.
About the course This course will give you a thorough grounding in work-based practice, and it will enable you to work towards recognised professional status, and prepare you for further study at postgraduate level including teacher training. You can study for the Early Years Teacher Programme during stage three of this course, an essential qualification if you want to lead and manage an early years setting.

This is a practical and work based course that has been designed with employers in the sector. You will develop the skills and values for working with children and young people aged 0-19.

Stage Three You will choose two of these optional modules: Thinking Creatively Special Educational Needs and Disability Leadership and Management for Practitioners Additional information You will be taught by lecturers from a range of professional backgrounds including early years, primary, secondary and tertiary teaching, social work and nursery management, so you can be sure that you will gain a wide range of knowledge and expertise. You will also attend lectures from a range of speakers from professional backgrounds, so you can be sure that your practical knowledge will be right up to date.
Your career You will develop key transferable skills such as intellectual and personal development skills. You will also gain lots of practical skills which you can apply to a range of employment opportunities within the sector, and to the study of children, young people and their communities. There are also opportunities for you to develop professional skills which include, First Aid training, Food Hygiene, Makaton training and Safeguarding training. You could work in the private, voluntary or independent sector, or join a graduate employment scheme. If you want to teach, you can apply to study our PGCE Primary or Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills) when you graduate. Some students choose to do further training in social work.
